Ask Rose Eileen

A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, How far in advance should savethe-dates and invitations go out? We’re getting married in the middle of next summer, and nearly all our guests are from out of town. We want to make sure we give everyone plenty of advance notice, since there will probably be lots of weddings taking place around that time, and lots of people will need to make travel arrangements. What’s the best way to do this? From the Bride-to-be by email Dear Bride-to-be, A six month lead time on your savethe-date mailing is not unheard of, especially if your wedding date is at holiday time, during expected summer vacations or for destination weddings where guests would need to figure out vacation schedules and budget for travel. Wedding Invitations tend to go out much closer to the wedding date. They are usually mailed six to eight weeks before the event, which ensures you’ll get an accurate head count when guests respond closer to the date. Dear Rose Eileen, My fi ance and I have been together for a few years. I like his sister but have not been close. I’ve tried and it just doesn’t seem to work out. I know she’ll be hurt, but I’ve decided not to have her in the wedding. How do I deal with this? Michelle by email

see this wouldn’t apply, but if you’re having a large wedding party, I’m sure including her will be fine and certainly wouldn’t hurt. Besides, extending the hand of friendship by asking her can be a powerful influence to your future relationship. Dear Rose Eileen, Money must be on everyone’s mind when planning a wedding. How can I give my daughter the wedding she dreams of without breaking the bank? I don’t want to disappoint her. Jeannie, mother of the bride-to-be Dear Jeannie, Well, you’re going to have to start by sitting down with your daughter and future son-in-law and get an idea of what they would like for their wedding. There can be a big diff erence in costs and details of planning a smaller wedding, larger wedding or even destination wedding. The size of the potential guest list will be a big factor. You should also make a list of those things that matter the most. Food and music are always important and could be the bulk of the budget. A good band or DJ will keep the reception exciting and moving. A photographer will be important for capturing those memories. You’ll have to make lists of people and ideas and go from there. Be prepared for comprimise. Don’t skimp on the important components. Don’t be afraid to consider hiring a wedding planner for extra assistance

Dear Michelle, In the “traditional scene” brides usually include future sister-in-laws in their wedding party, but it’s a thoughtful courtsey and not a requirement. If you’re having an intimate wedding party, you’re going to want to pick the people closest to you and you can Do you have a question about planning your wedding? Rose Eileen invites you to submit any questions about wedding planning by mail or email. Rose Eileen and the advertisers of the Wedding Day Sourcebook will do their utmost to answer them. Send Your Questions About Weddings To: “Dear Rose Eileen”, c/o The Wedding Day Sourcebook P.O. Box 916, W. Springfield, MA 01090 or email her at info@weddingsourcebook.com

Be Unique:

We were married by my brother, Luis Rodriguez, who received a One-day marriage designation from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to solemnize our wedding. We will always cherish his signature on our marriage certificate. And, we will never forget the incredible job he did performing the ceremony. Many of our guests were shocked when they found out that he wasn’t a professional.

Special Moments:

Spending many hours together planning for our wedding. I really loved that my husband was with me as we picked flowers, sampled cake, selected music, sent invitations, made seating charts and helped take care of all those little details that make for a one of a kind day. Seeing my and the bridesmaid’s bouquets for the very first time. Heather from Durocher Florist really captured what I wanted. The wonderful natural beauty of Forest Park served as background for our wedding pictures. It seemed as if the flowers were planted just for us as they were a perfect a compliment to our wedding colors. The soft rain which began to fall just as we finished taking our pictures was a sign from above we hope of many more blessings to come. Our wedding party was very special to me. My sister was my Matron of Honor and my fifteen year old niece was the Maid of Honor. My husband’s brother was the best man. My other niece performed the role of flower girl and my eighteen year old nephew was the ring bearer. It was so important to both of us to have our family play such a special role in our day. Climbing down a three foot cement wall in my wedding dress after getting a great shot with my husband in front of the clock tower. Dancing our last dance surrounded by our family and friends as they all clapped in unison while we both sang to each other.

Favorite Moments:

Dave: Riding Park in a 1936 Roadmaster as we took our wedding pictures. Update on the Great Wedding Giveaway August...the Final Month! The Western New England Great Wedding Giveaway comes to a close on August 29, 2010 as Stephanie and Brian finally take that walk down the aisle and say “I Do” in front of their family and friends. From the beginning of being announced the winners of The Great Wedding Giveaway in March to the final planning and last details of this wedding, it is an adventure that we will not forget. To bring you up to date in this final month of August, Lynn Brunelle Kennedy, wedding coordinator and owner of LB Events and Marketing, has been keeping our couple right on track and very organized throughout this process. The invitations for the wedding from Lasting Impressions, have set the tone of elegance and fun for this couple. The Marriott of Springfield, MA has put together a wonderful reception menu for the wedding and their rooftop gardens will serve as ceremony location. Seth Kaye Photography will capture every touching moment of this event that we will share with everyone in the November issue and online through a slide show presentation. The bridal gown has arrived at Bancroft Bridals and Stephanie will be getting her final fitting with just a few weeks before the wedding. The bridesmaids’ gowns from Bridal Heirlooms have arrived and actually have been picked up by the girls, plus their look is complete with complimenting jewelry from Rys and Shine. Thanks to our voting fan club, Brian and the men in the wedding party will be dressed in the latest style of tuxedo right down to the cufflinks from Formal Affairs Tuxedo and Tailoring of West Springfield, MA. Also on tap just for the men in the wedding party will be a Groom’s Brunch at Chandler’s Restaurant, taking place the day before the wedding. This will give Brian and his guys an opportuwww.weddingsourcebook.com

nity to relax and enjoy some wonderful food and good times before the wedding. Continuing with pre-wedding celebrations, Stephanie will also be having her Bridesmaids’ Luncheon at Chandler’s Restaurant just weeks before the wedding. Amanda Malone at Chandler’s has put together an wonderful menu just for this event. The amazing rehearsal dinner will be at The Delaney House. Beth Degray gave three very different menus for the voting process. The winning menu was a traditional sitdown meal with a twist of flavors sure to please everyone. On wedding day, Salon Karma will work their magic and give Stephanie a wonderful hair style for her wedding that will also compliment the headpiece and jewelry from Roxy’s Jewelry Boutique. Pam from Mary Kay Cosmetics will be handling makeup for Stephanie and the wedding party as well. Flowers will play an important part of setting the style of the wedding and Heather Sullivan from Durocher Florist in West Springfield, MA has put together some beautiful combinations in a delightful summer fare that will surely compliment the entire wedding party. The winning bridal bouquet will include be a compliment of pinks and white that will also compliment the wedding party. The reception will be transformed with shades of pink uplighting to compliment the wedding, plus pinspotting of tables from CJC Event Lighting. The voting process will determine which unique gobo design will appear behind their sweetheart table at the reception. For entertainment, After Hours DJ Entertainment from Enfield, CT will be bring up the excitement level with Stephanie and Brian’s preferred music selections. Introductions, first dance selections and other

fun elements will be added to keep their guests dancing and moving all night long. Stephanie and Brian will show off their dance lesson from Emily Fox. Also, for some fun, Marx Entertainment will be providing a photobooth for our couple and their guests to enjoy. Plus, you can’t have a wedding without wedding cake. Karen Moore of Moore cakes will be creating an amazing wedding cake chosen by the voters. Stephanie and Brian did get to choose the flavors... which I’m sure carrot cake is involved in there somewhere! The “fun” factor completes the Western New England Great Wedding Giveaway. Charlotte Dunaj at Underlings Lingerie, gave Stephanie the winning selection of lingerie as well as some satin boxers for Brian for the honeymoon! And speaking of honeymoon Michelle Mangio from Magical Escapes offered up 5 different accommodations for voting!! This was an exciting voting process with many different choices for an amazing honeymoon! The winning honeymoon for Stephanie and Brian’s is a wonderful Almond Resorts package. The Western New England Great Wedding Giveaway website has all the updates and adventures of Stephanie and Brian’s wedding. Please visit the website as we do have a few more items to vote on to complete the wedding, plus you’ll want to see all the details on the items already chosen for this wonderful wedding. Wedding Thank Yous Ah, Peggy Post. I think of etiquette and style when I hear her name, especially when the subject is a thank you note. With the heavy use of the social networking and email in today’s communication, nothing is more appreciated than a lovely personal handwritten thank-you note. Here are some tips from us...and Peggy Post. When should notes be written? Contrary to popular myth, the happy couple does not have a year’s grace period to write a thank you note. All thank you notes should be written within three months of the receipt of the gift. Peggy says that ideally, a response should be written on the day you receive a wedding gift. If that’s not possible, set a daily goal. It’s a lot easier to write three or four notes a day than to have to write a hundred notes in a month after the wedding! What stationery should be used? First of all, stationery is the operative word here...that means paper and writing impliment! No fill-in-the-blank cards, no preprinted cards, no phone calls, no emails andno generic post on your website! Who needs a note? •Anyone who gives you an engagement, shower or wedding gift, even if you have thanked them in person. Individual notes should be written to people who contributed to a group gift. •Anyone who gives a gift of money: cash, checks, contributions to savings accounts and donations to charities. Mentioning the amount is optional, but it does let the person know the correct amount was received. You should mention what you plan to do with the money. •Your attendants. A warm personal note attached to your gifts to your attendants will let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and support on your behalf. •Anyone who hosted a party or shower for you. Ideally these notes should be written within two days of the event. Each host or hostess should be thanked individually with a note and a thank you gift. •People who house or entertain your wedding guests. A note and a small gift should be sent to anyone who houses or entertains out-of-town wedding guests. •People who do kindnesses for you. The neighbor who accepts delivery of your

www.weddingsourcebook.com

gifts when you are at work; the cousin who supervises the parking at the reception – anyone who assists you before, during or after your wedding. •Suppliers and vendors. You don’t have to write everyone you hire for services, but anyone who exceeds your expectations will appreciate a courteous note of thanks. •Your parents or whoever is hosting your wedding.

Ten Do’s and Don’ts of Thank You Notes • Do personalize your notes and make reference to the person as well as the gift. • Do remember that a gift should be acknowledged with the same courtesy and generous spirit in which it was given. • Do be enthusiastic, but don’t gush. Avoid saying a gift is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen unless you really mean it. • Don’t send form letters or cards with printed messages and just your signature. • Don’t use email or post a generic thank you on your wedding web site in lieu of a personal note. • Do promptly acknowledge the receipt of shipped gifts by sending a note right away or calling and following up with a written note in a day or two. • Don’t mention that you plan to return a gift or that you are dissatisfied in any way. • Do refer to the way you will use a gift of money. Mentioning the amount is optional. • Don’t include wedding photos or use photo cards if it will delay sending the note.

20 Things You Should Never Do When Planning A Wedding! Planning your wedding can bring a whole rollercoaster of emotions. You’re excited... this is a very exciting time in your life. You want it to be a stress-free and fun process, but exhaustion, stress and frustration will creep in. Here’s a few simple suggestions that you should NEVER do while planning your wedding. Some are just common sense items you might over look. Others are important. 1.) Never book any reception venue without seeing it. And I would suggest visiting more than once. The only exception to this is if you have a wedding planner working on your behalf. Get details of the venue; what’s included, what’s not, such as linens, cost of extra time, private room for the wedding party to freshen up in. 2.) Never ever work with any vendor without a contract. Contracts put everyone’s expectations and obligations on paper. This includes if you’re working with any family member owned business. Ask for a contract if none is mentioned. Also realize that you will need to place a deposit, usually not-refundable, with a vendor you wish to reserve for your wedding. 3.) Never be afraid to speak up with your vendors. If you have questions or concerns, ask while changes can still be made as opposed to being stuck with something you will regret on your wedding day. 4.) Get your budget organized first. Never start planning or interviewing vendors without a budget. You’ll waste your time as well as their time if you don’t have a budget to work with. One of the most stressful elements to wedding planning usually is money. Make sure you decide up front how much your total wedding budget is going to be and who will be contributing and how much. 5.) Never choose a dress under the condition you will lose weight to fit in it later. Alterations of a wedding gown is usually not that simple. Most dresses can only be let out just a little. Having to take in a dress that is two or more sizes to big can be very costly and could even change the appearance of the original dress you fell in love with. 6.) Don’t turn into a Bridezilla. Don’t take

22 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook

your family and friends for granted. Yes, they are there for you, to support you, assist you, to be by your side during one of the most exciting times of your life. Appreciate them, please treat them nicely. 7.) Don’t lose site of the importance of the day. It’s not just this wonderful party you’re planning, but your marriage, the beginning of your lives together. 8.) We all watch those reality bridal TV shows and it’s nice to gain ideas, but never believe everything you see on those wedding shows. 9.) Never pick a vendor that has poor communication skills. You need to pick vendors that understand you and your expectations. 10.) As much as you’re tempted, never put your registry information on or with your invitation. You do not want people to feel like there is a cover charge for your wedding. This information needs to be sent word of mouth, on your wedding website/newsletter or with your bridal/ couple shower invite. 11.) Budgets are important, but never choose a photographer with your budget solely in mind. This is the only thing that will preserve your memories for your special day. Please choose someone with style, talent and personality that you believe will be a good match for you. Reminder, they will be with you the entire day, following you around, directing you, working with you to get the shots you need and expect for your wedding. 12.) Yes, it is your wedding. Never think you will be able to make everyone happy with your decisions. Don’t try to make them all angry either. Do ask for ideas and suggestions from family and friends. You could easily make your future in-laws happy by incorporating one of their suggestions. 13.) Don’t get crazy over every detail. It can really take the pleasure out of the wedding planning process. With today’s economy everyone tends to take on more than what they can handle. Keep in mind of what your can and can’t do. 14.) Never try to micromanage your day while wearing the gown. The day will fly by anyway. Trust your hired wedding

professionals to be all they are and deliver on their talent. Enjoy your day and save your sanity by hiring a day of coordinator or wedding planner. 15.) Never forget to take care of yourself. Sleep is one of nature’s best ways to revitalize and relax. Getting a full night’s sleep, in a quiet comfortable surrounding, is your way of helping Mother Nature to help you. Keep your alcohol consumption to a limit before your wedding and hydrate your body with lots of water. Don’t forget to eat regularly, even right before your wedding ceremony. 16.) Never, ever, withhold the final payment from a vendor with the belief that this will pressure them to show up. If you have chosen to hire professionals for your wedding, this will never be an issue. The wedding industry thrives on reputation, and several vendors have reputations that precede them. Many have the philosophy if you do not pay them on the due date, they will not be there, and you will be without the vendor anyway. 17.) Never treat your hired wedding professionals as your personal slaves for the day. They are there to help you make your day all that you want. Let them do the job they were hired for. Treat them with respect, including offering to feed them at your reception and you will find they will deliver as expected...and even more! 18.) Never lose sight of the fact that you will have several hundred people at your wedding with different tastes and likes. While you cannot make them all happy, as a host, it is your job to make it enjoyable and comfortable. Remember this when it comes to design, location and food. 19.) Never forget to say thank you. On your wedding day, greet guests and thank them for sharing your special day. Personally thank your wedding party, thank you parents and thank your wedding professionals. Those two little words mean so much! 20.) Don’t spend more than your budget or what you can aff ord. Your wedding day is an important day, but it is only one day. You don’t want to start your new life together by going into “serious” debt from your wedding expenses.

I believe everyone, at one time or another, thinks of having an outdoor wedding. The fresh air, the room, the options of having it at home or in a park or favorite outdoor location. However, having an outdoor wedding can be challenging, but has it’s own rewards. The Weather: Consider the time of year you’re thinking of having it. Is it normally hot and sunny...or do you tend to get quite a bit of rain during the season of your wedding date? If you’re planning a more late afternoon or evening wedding, how does it cool down during the evening? If the wedding is in the late afternoon while it’s still hot, but the reception goes on late into the night, will guests get cold outdoors? Remember, most of us tend to dress for the weather at the time of the wedding, and often don’t consider what the temperature will be like later in the evening. Costs : A first thought is that an outdoor wedding does not cost as much as in indoor wedding, but many outdoor weddings tend to cost just about the same as indoor weddings. You will need to rent everything, set it up yourself or pay to have it all set up. Having a tent is a must. You will need it to help shield people from the hot sun during the day, as well as from any sudden downpours you may unexpectedly receive. You will also need to rent the tables, chairs, tableware, and even a dance floor if you need a flat area. With an indoor location, all of these items are supplied by the location of your choosing. Be prepared to budget for an outdoor wedding and be sure you get estimates from various vendors. You do have more opportunities for personalization of a tent wedding by adding flowers and plants, a dance floor and even lighting. You can highlight a theme or color with table linens and décor. On-Site Consultations: On-site consultations should be made with all your vendors, including the tent rental company, the caterer, the florist, the decorator, the musicians, and so on.

You will need to give each of them a run-down on how you want the area set up and where items (and people) will be located. You will also need to determine with your vendors how much advanced time they will need to set up. You’ll need to verify that there is enough electricity to the location for any needs such as music and lighting. You’ll also need room for the caterer, staff and a food preparation area. If you’re having your tent reception at home, you do have the opportunity for more preparation time, and also, because it’s at your home, you won’t feel rushed to end your reception after just a few hours. You can continue on without having to feel rushed out of your reception venue. Reserve Early: With any sort of outdoor tent wedding, you must be prepared to book everything early... at least 8 to 10 months in advance. However, be sure you book and consult with your caterer first, to determine whether they know how to handle and accommodate an outdoor wedding. Often caterers can give you suggestions on how to set up and handle things for the location and they are more than willing to work with you in arrangements for rental equipment, coordinate deliveries and set up with you. Having an outdoor wedding can be very romantic and fun, but it does take advance planning and coordination. Keep a small notebook handy so you can quickly jot down all upcoming appointments, ideas (which often appear at the strangest of times), vendor names and phone numbers, plus anything else that you think is relevant. This will become your “little wedding bible” as your special day draws nearer and you will probably refer to it quite often. Remember, advanced planning and budgeting will keep you and all your chosen services and suppliers happy.
