Hello Fall! It’s the beginning of one of the most colorful, popular seasons in New England. September marks the beginning of the fall bridal show season. There are a number of wonderful events to attend this fall for anyone planning a wedding or special event. The 8th annual Day of Elegance Bridal Show takes place at the Garden House at Look Park on Sunday, September 20th. Information on the show can be found in this issue and on the website at www.cjcevents.com. In this month’s issue you’ll find information on Fraser Island, Natural Romance for a honeymoon location, the Money Talk for Couples and 7 Points of Bridal Gown Shopping. One of my favorites is the Secrets of a Successful Marriage, because that is what it’s truely about...marriage. That day to day, year to year life you and your soon to be spouse grow into. The words “for better or for worse” does completely hold true. There are times you’re going to want to pull your hair out, times you will never stop laughing, the joy you share, the sorrow you endure and the times you’ll remember for the rest of your lives. This is what it’s all about. Thank you for beginning with the Wedding Day Sourcebook! Best wishes!

Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, We believe we would like to do a receiving line. What’s the best way to go about it and make everyone comfortable? Every one that I’ve seen, people are awkward greeting people they don’t know very well. Help! Kim Bride-to-be Dear Kim, Keep it simple with the bride and groom, maid of honor and best man and parents of the bride and groom. Everyone else in the wedding party can stand off to one side. A receiving line can be uncomfortable for guests who only know either the bride or groom or the parents and are not sure how to congratulate the other. People often have an anxious feeling before going through a receiving line. So, if you know that a guest doesn’t know you very well, you need to make the first move, either stick out your hand for a congratulatory shake or hold out your arms for a hug. With a smaller line, introductions can go quickly and more personally without embarrassment of the unknown.
Dear Rose Eileen, We were thinking of forgoing the table assignments at our wedding and just letting the guest mix in for themselves sitting with whoever they want. What are your thoughts? Confused bride by email Dear Bride, The wedding day is suppose to be a celebration, but it is important to think about your guests and how to make them feel welcomed and comfortable. If
there is no assigned tables for the guests or groups of families and they figure out it’s a free-for-all seating, they will have to scramble to make sure they are sitting with someone they know or with family. Guests feel lost if they do not have at least an assigned table or grouping. Gracious and thoughtful celebrations require all attendees, as well as the bride and groom, to be well cared for and surrounded by thoughtful decor and gestures.
Dear Rose Eileen, How can we keep things moving during our wedding and reception? I recently went to a wedding that was so unorganized, no one knew when the bride and groom were going to cut the cake or when to touch the candy bar. What do you recommend? Rachael K. October bride Dear Rachael, A good flowing schedule should be in place for a smooth reception. Be sure to communicate your needs to your catering or venue manager and DJ or band. Between the two your food flows smoothly and your music keeps going. Creating a program would be one way to avoid gaps in either. You can set up a cake cutting schedule and then time your opening of your candy buffet or treat table when it’s ready. Remember, nothing to ridgid. You want to have fun and not live every reception moment down to the minute with a schedule.

Be Unique:
We were laughing and joking throughout the ceremony, our wedding kiss was over 30 seconds long (we had to beat my parents’ record), and we danced off the altar and down the aisle of the church. We spent the reception dancing and singing with all of the most important people in our lives. The six hours of the reception flew by like they do for everyone, but we had the best time dancing the night away. *My grandmother passed away just a few days before the wedding. This made the entire day emotionally taxing for my entire family. The only real flower in my bouquet is the bright yellow one in the middle that I took from the arrangement on her casket. I like that it is brighter than the rest of the flowers because it felt like she was shining through as she looked down at me. *Instead of doing favors, we did a donation to Autism Speaks instead. I work with children with Autism and felt that the donation would be much better than spending money on favors that nobody actually uses anyway. *During the cocktail hour, the wedding party is usually in a private suite or taking pictures. Instead of relaxing in our private suite during the cocktail hour, we decided to mingle with our guests during this time so that we had more time to party and dance during the reception. We actually got to enjoy dinner and have plenty of time to enjoy the celebration that we spent a year planning. I would definitely recommend for other couples to do the same thing.
Favorite Moments:
Steph: My favorite moment was our first dance. It felt like all of the people at the reception weren’t even there and we just got to share a special intimate moment as husband and wife. Sean: I loved all of the dancing. Everyone’s favorite part of a wedding is the reception and ours was a blast! Each couple in our wedding party was introduced with their own song that was appropriately chosen based on their personalities and jokes that we have shared over the years and as soon as dinner and dessert were done, we were on the dance floor for the rest of the evening.

Secrets Of A Successful Marriage Be each other’s support system. You go through many things in a lifetime. It helps to know there is someone to help you shoulder the hard times. When your partner comes to you or needs an encouraging word, give it to them. Your vote of confidence can do wonders for your partner and in turn better your relationship. Be able to compromise. By now we should all agree that people can’t always have their own way. Applying the art of compromise is a healthy solution to settling a disagreement. Be willing to look for new avenues for exchange in order to make things feel fair to your partner. You might try a back rub in exchange for dish washing duty or quiet time together in exchange for a guy’s night out. Compromising can help you turn your differences into new ways to discover each other. Express your love in a variety of ways. Don’t just say it; show it. Don’t just show it; say it. In other words, find more than one way to express your affection for your partner. Variety is the spice that keeps a marriage together. Leave a love note under your partner’s pillow. Write “I love you” in lipstick on the mirror. Hide a rose on your partner’s car seat. Stop and give your partner a very unexpected weak-inthe-knees kiss. Mail a hand-written love letter. Avoid falling into a boredom rut by continually striving to try and do new things together. Respect each other’s individuality. Encourage your partner to participate in individual interests they may have. In fact, take that encouragement a step further and occasionally join your partner in their favorite past time. You’ll be showing your partner that you not only understand who they are, but that you love them exactly how they are as well. Always leave on good terms. Life is unexpected. No argument is worth parting ways while upset with each other. If you can keep this in mind, it will go a long way to helping you put certain aspects of your relationship in perspective. Learn to value your relationship enough to never let things get that out of hand. Be kind and considerate to each other. This may seem like a given, but how many times have you snapped at your partner under stress, or made an unnecessary remark? Words and the tone in which they’re used leave a lasting imprint. You
12 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
can use this to make your couple memories something you will happily look back upon…or not. Long-term married couples make kindness and respect toward their partner a crucial part of their daily lives. Exploit each other strengths, not weaknesses. Think of yourselves as a team. Together you are going to try and accomplish many things from buying a house, bettering your careers, raising children and more. If you spend your time nit-picking each other about what you’re doing wrong, you’re wasting valuable effort that could be put towards making your dreams come true. If you were to encourage a group of employees, you wouldn’t tell them how horrible they are doing. You would start with positive, motivating statements. Learn to incorporate this towards each other. Find where each other’s strengths are and use them to your ability. One of you may be a more sales type personality, the other the organizer. Find out where you fit and how you can use those traits to better your team of husband and wife. Just about everyone wants to know how they can make their relationship better. They want to know how they can deepen the commitment and love between each partner. Unfortunately relationships are not something you can provide a “to do” sheet for and all will be solved, but with these five key secrets you can certainly improve your chances for getting all you desire out of your relationship. Do things unexpectedly. One key secret to a successful relationship is compromise. Meeting halfway on things shows your partner that you really do care about their viewpoint and you are willing to work on making each other happy. Every so often make it a point to do something that you normally would not agree to or feel like doing. When you keep your partner constantly surprised by your actions, you regenerate that “new love” feeling time and time again. So, when your partner asks if you want to try that new restaurant…say yes! If they ask if you want to try a new hobby…say yes! Show your loyalty. Nothing strengthens a relationship quite like watching your partner go to bat for you, especially against close friends or family members. It shows that you consider your
relationship a team. If you harass one member of a team, you harass them all. When you side with other people against your partner you make them feel alienated and the seeds of hidden resentment become planted. You can show loyalty positively as well by bragging about your partner’s recent accomplishments to friends and family. Be supportive. Challenges and opportunities are always going to occur. You can’t stop them from happening. Hopefully for both of you the changes in your lives are positive ones. The secret key here is having a supporting and understanding mate in your corner to help you through your ups and downs. If you lose your job, it’s quite a bit easier to bounce back when you have someone who’s willing to support your choices and any new directions you might want to branch out to. If you want a career or lifestyle change, imagine the difference having someone who will carefully consider and support those changes? When your partner is presenting you with a challenge or an opportunity, treat them the way you’d want to be treated. Maintain a healthy dose of individuality. Personal time and space are essential to growing individually. Everyone one needs private time to do the things they want to do. It helps refocus attention to the priorities. Sometimes you or your partner may just need time to release emotions from a bad day, instead of bringing it home with them. Learning to respect and notice when your partner needs some individual time shows that you are committed to not only your relationship, but their long-term happiness as well. Love your partner. Love is obviously a crucial element in a successful long-term relationship. But having love isn’t enough. You need to be in love. The phrase “love is a verb, not a noun” certainly applies here. Don’t hesitate to write that quick love note, give that deep kiss, sit next to each other at a restaurant or hold hands in public. The little things go a long way towards establishing a deep, intimate connection with your partner. As simple as it sounds, this action is probably the most commonly overlooked and ignored.

Money Talk For Couples Two out of three married couples consider money a major source of potential conflicts in their marriages, according to a survey conducted by the non--profit Consumer Credit Counseling Service. As newlyweds prepare to make exciting plans for their new life together, Loretta Abrams, senior vice president of Consumer Affairs, HSBCNorth America, offers the following tips to help couples address the challenges of managing money together: • Develop a financial goal. Share your plans together. Create a list of short-, medium- and long-term goals and then compare notes (buying a house or a car, having children, moving to a new city or starting a business). For each goal, figure out how much money you need to get there and how long you think it should take. • Decide how to handle the money. Will the two of you maintain separate accounts and divide up household expenses or will you maintain separate discretionary accounts with a combined household account? Are you willing to merge all finances? Let your individual “money personalities” dictate the right approach for you. If you share similar habits and priorities, combining all finances may be the perfect approach; however, if your habits are vastly different, it may make sense to maintain separate accounts. • Create a budget together. Check your past spending history and calculate your past debts. You have probably each developed very differ14 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
ent money styles. Spending Thursday night out with your friends or buying season tickets for your favorite team may still be in the cards but talk it through so you’re clear about priorities. Create a budget that will let you maximize your income and track your actual cash flow to make sure you’re staying within the boundaries you’ve set for yourself. Usually, it’s a monthto-month projection of the amounts allocated to each expense item based on your income. When you make a purchase or pay a bill, write it down and subtract it from the total you planned for that expense. Sticking to a budget can be difficult and at times frustrating and there’s no guarantee you’ll see huge savings in the short term, but these two suggestions may make the process easier: Go digital--Budgeting software packages and online resources can help. Most programs can perform basic budgeting tasks as well as sophisticated transactions. Keep it simple--Most experts agree that the key to a successful budget is to keep it simple and practical. Most of all, be realistic. If you love going to the movies, don’t drop them completely. Instead, try to cut back on the number of times you go or start a new tradition of movie nights at home.
cost of a higher education is steadily rising, so the prospect of paying for a four-year college education is not an insignificant obligation. If you have the option of saving for retirement through an employersponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), open an account immediately. You can defer a certain amount of your pretax salary into the account. In many cases, your employer will match a portion of your savings. In this way, you have the double advantage of saving money on taxes now and building your retirement account for the future. • Build emergency reserves. Be prepared for unexpected events such as job loss or major household repairs with an emergency account equal to three to six months’ expenses. To build up this account, have between 2 and 10 percent of your paycheck automatically deposited into savings--consider an online savings account, which offers higher yield and is easy to manage.
• Take advantage of tax-saving plans. If you’re planning to have children, look into some specific tax-saving accounts or the 529 plans now. The September 2009

Fraser Island: Natural Romance on the World’s Largest Sand Dune
By Michelle Mangio, Premier Aussie Specialist and Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Specialist of Magical Escapes Vacations
Wind is racing through your hair as you approach the shores of World Heritage listed Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand dune island, and the only one to have a natural tropical rainforest growing from its sands. While you can clearly see the dock and activities center on the beach as you approach, you are straining your eyes to catch a glimpse of the resort – a challenge made to every guest, for Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island prides itself on its ability to blend with the natural surroundings. None of the buildings are taller than the tree line, and wherever possible, they are made to look as much like the rainforest it sits within as possible. The glorious sun of a beautiful Australian day helps you out, as the glint of sunlight off a window gives away the resort’s location. But even then, when you at last arrive, you are unprepared for just how large Kingfisher Bay is – the resort really does hide well in its surroundings. For many couples, eco-tourism is quickly becoming an important word to them. They want to travel to a location that is eco-friendly, and where they might experience the allure and romance of natural surroundings on their honeymoon. But especially for honeymooners, they don’t want eco-tourism to also mean that they give up the little luxuries that make a romantic getaway so special. If that’s what you are looking for, Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island is the perfect resort for you. The first ‘green’ resort in Australia, Kingfisher Bay is nestled in the rainforest of Fraser Island, a magnificent sand dune island off the coast of Queensland, on the east coast of Australia. Only 4 hours north of Brisbane by car, or 45 minutes by air, Fraser Island is easily and quickly reached. It is also only 2.5 hours north of Noosa, a beautiful vacation mecca with fine food and dining and great shopping along a beautiful stretch of white sand beach – the perfect stopover for those who want to combine a romantic getaway on Fraser Island with one of the best holiday destinations in Queensland. Ferries depart several times daily from Harvey Bay – or, for a truly amazing start to your honeymoon, take a seaplane transfer over. While Fraser Island may be an ecological wonder, it is the results of that wonder that truly make this an amazing honeymoon destination. As the world’s
16 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
largest sand dune, there is no experience that can match driving along 75 Mile Beach highway in a 4x4 jeep. But more, this is an island of exceptional beauty, with long uninterrupted white sand beaches surrounded by strikingly colored sand cliffs. Ancient rainforests grow in sand along the banks of fast-flowing, crystal clear creeks – so clear, that from a distance, you almost can’t even see the water. The island boasts over 100 freshwater lakes, some tea-colored and others clear and the most amazing blue, ringed by white sandy beaches – the sand finer than any other you have ever held. Indeed, Fraser Island’s sand is so pure and fine, that until the practice was stopped, the island exported sand to the Hawaiian Islands to line their beaches. Lake Mc Kenzie, perched high in a sand dune over 300 feet above sea level, is one of the most amazing examples of the lakes on Fraser Island – the water is so amazingly clear, it takes on the color of the sky above – most days a brilliant blue that even the Tahitian Islands would be envious of. The sand along the beach is among the finest white powder sand in the world. You can wash your engagement ring with the sand to make it sparkle like new, and it is said that bathing and scrubbing your skin with the sand will take 10 years away. I know that I certainly felt like a new person after my swim there. Many tours are offered that will take you up into the lakes, out along Seventy-Five Mile Beach, or through the rainforest on some beautiful trails. Kingfisher Bay also offers many guided and self-guided tours and trails around the resort, including an early morning bird watching tour for those who wish to catch a glimpse of some of the 354 species of birds recorded on the island. From August to October, you can head out into Hervey Bay for an incredible whale watching tour – over 1500 Humpback Whales make the Bay their home on their way to the Antarctic, and it is here in the sheltered bay that mother whales often stay with their babies, anywhere from two days to two weeks, before continuing on. You may have been on whale watches up in the New England before, but you’ve never had a whale watching experience like this: the vast number of whales, for one, but the curious babies and their parents often come right up to the boat while you watch. When you aren’t off enjoying
all that Fraser Island offers, you’ll have plenty of time to rest and relax in the resort. Kingfisher Bay is a 4-star internationally acclaimed resort, with 152 hotel rooms overlooking lakes and bush land. For a bit more space, there are 110 2- and 3- bedroom self-contained villas with bush and sea views, making for the perfect honeymoon suite. The main lodge building contains two restaurants and a cocktail bar, with a third beachside restaurant for more casual dining is offered. The lodge opens onto a magnificent two-level swimming pool, inspired by the beautiful Lake McKenzie. Dining can be a casual affair here, but for those who want an amazing dining experience, Kingfisher Bay won’t disappoint. The amazing chefs put together an unforgettable meal, using local ingredients so you can really get a taste of both Australia and Fraser Island. Romantic dinner under the stars can be had on a good evening, otherwise it is candlelight, crystal, and china under an awning that allows you to look out over the beauty of the resort grounds. Or escape away one afternoon with a private picnic lunch on the beach. When you’re ready to truly relax, the resort offers a Beauty Salon and Spa services; nothing speaks honeymoon better than a relaxing couples massage to chase away that jetlag. Enjoy tennis and beach volleyball, take a kayak out along the shore, or just stroll along the beautiful beaches. At Fraser Island, you can do as much or as little as you like. Spend the days together enjoying the natural beauty, peace and tranquility. Relax on your own private deck, soak up the sun on the white sand beach, enjoy intimate dining, or sail into the sunset sipping champagne. Picnic by crystal-clear lakes or follow pristine streams though ancient rainforests on a bush walk. Take a cruise to find dolphins, dugong and turtles at play in the calm island waters or to see the magnificent humpback whales. Go sailing or fishing or just lay along the beach. Take tours to see the wildlife, from the many species of birds to a glimpse at the wild dingoes on the island. All of this combined to make Fraser Island truly “naturally romantic.” Discover for yourself why these deserted white sand beaches, beautiful lakes, and cool rainforests make Fraser Island the perfect setting for romance.

Bridal Gown Shopping...Seven Key Points To Keep In Mind Careful planning is essential for your wedding preparations to go smoothly. Headaches and stress does not exactly make a blushing, beaming bride. You may have heard of rumors about otherwise placid females morphing into bridezillas, especially when it comes to picking a wedding gown. If you are keen NOT to be one of them, then review these tips: 1. Envision yourself on your big day. What do you see yourself wearing? Take into account the circumstances, your style. Are you going to have a beach wedding or a garden wedding. Or are you going to have a traditional church wedding. Consider the season; a wrap, strapless, skinny straps, or sleeves. 2. Decide on your budget. Formulate a general price range so you can be flexible enough in choosing from the wide variety of designs. 3. Do some homework. Browse the Internet, books, magazines
-- leaf through them and figure out which styles flatter you and which ones don’t, which style you would be comfortable in. Narrow down your options and find the designs which suit your personality best, but do keep an open mind. 4. Research bridal salon locations, customer reviews, recommendations and price range -- these are the vital issues you have to deal with. Do some research on the internet. You might be tempted to order a dress from Ebay on the cheap, or from some shop across the country, but why take a chance on such an important decision. Look for shops near your area. Ask friends and relatives for recommendations on the shops. 5. Call the shops you’ve selected. Find out more about the store and the kind of goods it offers. It’s best to make an appointment so you’ll have time to browse and try on gowns. Learn about their staff through these
phone conversations, as well. 6. Be practical. You may want to look like a princess on your wedding day, but surely you don’t want to go broke doing so. Set a budget, set a design and find a dress that fits into both. Keep your options open as you do not need to stick to one bridal shop. Look for special sales, trunk shows, sample sales and end of season discounts. Go explore until you find the perfect one. 7. Keep open minded. Good full service bridal salon consultants and owners know their gowns, prices, and styles. They might suggest a designer or style you have not considered that, although may not look like much on the hanger, may look beautiful on you. Be flexible and give it a try! Above all, have fun shopping for your gown. Know that it’s a oncein-a-lifetime experience, so make the most of it. Know what you want, go for what you want. It is your wedding after all.

How to Make Out of Town Guests Feel at Home Your best friend from college now lives six states away, and the cousin you grew up with is on the opposite coast from you. They may be thousands of miles away, but your out-of-town guests still play an important role in making your wedding day everything you dreamed it could be. “Americans are more mobile and in-touch than at any time in our history,” says Barry Glick of NAVTEQ’s Traffic.com. “Cell phones and e-mail enable us to maintain close relationships with loved ones who live thousands of miles away, but on your wedding day, you’ll want to have them by your side.” With some careful pre-wedding planning and a little help from local family and friends, you can help ensure out-of-towners will make the trip – and enjoy the journey. Here are some tips: * To make distant loved ones feel like a part of the pre-wedding excitement, consider sending an e-newsletter in the months leading up to the big day. You can do this on a monthly basis or weekly, whatever fits into your schedule. Fill the newsletter with information about your planning progress (“We booked the reception hall.”), updates on RSVPs (“Don’t forget – RSVPs are due back in just two weeks.”), and amusing anecdotes about life as a bride-to-be (“I gained two pounds tasting wedding cakes last week!). * Create your own wedding Web page where you can include useful photos that will help out-of-town guests recognize important landmarks when they visit. Post images of the outside of your wedding location and reception site, so that when guests arrive they’ll recognize the spot and know they’re in the right place. * If guests are taking a long road-trip to attend, help them out by mapping their route for them before they depart. They may have navigations systems in their cars or they may rely on Internetbased map resources. Once they are in your area, Traffic.com is a great site to help them plan the best route to your specific wedding venue. The website provides real-time information on delays, traffic jams and detours, as well. Guests can update the information you provide by logging on to www.Traffic.com themselves, or calling (866) MY-TRAFC (866-698-7232). * For guests who have cars equipped with a navigation system, a map update purchased through www.navigation.com provides many benefits: * Confidence in knowing the best route to the wedding. * Satisfaction in finding the quickest way around a detour. * Comfort in finding the closest hotel, restaurant or ATM. * Freedom from not having to pull over and ask for directions. * Recruit in-town family and friends to act as personal assistants for out-of-town guests, helping with travel arrangements, hotel reservations, emergencies and other trouble-shooting. Introduce the visiting loved ones with your near-home volunteers by e-mail or phone. * Negotiate a good hotel room rate for out-of-town guests. If you’re having your reception in a hotel, the property will usually offer a discounted rate for your guests. If your reception is in a hall that’s not affiliated with a particular property, research hotels within a reasonable driving distance and approach them asking for a group rate discount. For large groups, some hotels may even agree to provide your guests with shuttle service to your reception site.
