Hello! Welcome to October! A beautiful time of the year in New England. Many brides and grooms pick this time of year to get married with the beautiful leaves making a perfect background for their celebration. Congratulations to all our brides and grooms getting married this month. October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are a number of area fundraising activities and online outlets that will let you participate and donate. The Rays of Hope-A Walk Towards the Cure of Breast Cancer happens October 25th in Springfield and Greenfield this year! Since it was founded in 1994, they have been committed to improving the breast health of people in our communities with quality and compassion. Through the Baystate Health Foundation, the Walk has grown from 500 participants to over 15,000 and has exceeded $7.3 million raised and awarded throughout western Massachusetts. I’m sure you know of someone who has been affected by breast cancer, either as a patient, family member, care giver or supporter. Sign on to http://baystatehealth.org/Baystate/raysofhope and do what you can to support this wonderful cause! If you can’t participate in the walk, check out Brides Against Breast Cancer. They have a number of suggestions for supporting the struggle against this disease. Visit http://bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/. Next month, join us at the Western New England Fall Bridal Show on November 15th at the MassMutual Center. You’ll find everything you need for your wedding, including an early bird bridal gown sale at 10:30am featuring gowns for just $199. Check the website for more information and specials for attending brides and grooms-to-be!

Ask Rose Eileen
A Column Of Questions and Answers From Springfield’s Miss Manners Dear Rose Eileen, We are thinking of seeing each other before the actual walk down the isle. Getting everyone together to do some photos and such. My family loves the idea but his mother is totally against it. What do you think? We are the first to get married in our family, we need some help! Lynn P. from Enfield, CT Dear Lynn, The old school rule was the first time you see your groom on your wedding day should be at your ceremony. The new rule is throwing out the old rule and seeing your groom before the ceremony. In fact, many couples who decided to wait until the ceremony to see each other would have preferred to have the inevitably emotional experience in private rather than in front of all of their guests. Photographers are happy to capture the moment you first see each other before the ceremony, you can plan it out with them so easily and meaningful. Many wedding parties are taking photos ahead of time so they won’t miss a moment of the cocktail hour and reception! We promise no bad luck will follow you! Dear RoseEileen, I’m having a 7pm wedding ceremony and don’t expect to be at our recepiton location untill well after 8pm. We wre thinking of just a station hor d’ourve reception with a bar and signature drink. We would also serve our cake as well as a dessert bar. What are you thoughts on this idea and how do we tell our guests we are not having a regular sit-down dinner? Pam from Springfield, MA
Dear Rose Eileen, Do I put our website address on the wedding invitation for those who have questions? Our site has information like more about us, directions, maps to the wedding and so on. Marie Dear Marie, Do not place it on your actual invitation. You can add a little card, about the size of your response card, that would state your website and the purpose for viewing it. Dear Rose Eileen, I’m sure money is on everyone’s mind. How can I have the wedding I’ve dreamed of and keep the budget affordable? Jenna from Agawam, MA Dear Jenna, Think about your dream wedding and make a list of the most important things to each of you. Adjust your budget to spend more on the most important things (like your collective Top 3) and less on the not-so-important stuff. Food and music are always important. Don’t skimp on the important things. A bad DJ or band can really bring a reception to a crawl. Don’t forget photography...you’ll have those memories forever. You will have a lot of compromising to do. The guestlist size will make a difference. Keep your guest list small. Don’t do the same thing every bride does, go for something different. Pick an “off-season” wedding date. Some venues will give discounts for Friday evening or Sunday weddings. Find a really creative smaller location such as a bed and breakfast, museum or function room that you can put your signature and style on.
Dear Pam, I think your idea is wonderful and with your reception starting well after the dinner hour, I’m sure guests will not expect a full sit down dinner. To make it clear, you might want to state “Hor d’ourve and dessert reception following ceremony” on your invitation.

Ceremony and Reception: In Boston, MA (Boston Harbor) on the Elite Yacht. Gown: I got my gown online a long time ago for a Pageant and It was so pretty I decided to reuse it at the wedding as my something old. Tuxedo: Men’s Warehouse Photographer: Chris Kerr/Kerr Photography DJ: John Zucco/Entertainment Specialists. Florist: I did the flowers myself. I used Gerbera Daisies and Orange, Yellow, and Hot Pink and White/Pink/Green colored Hydrangeas Transportation: The Yacht/On the Elite Yacht from Entertainment Cruises in Boston. First Dance: Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Callait. Honeymoon: We didn’t really have a honeymoon. Steven is in the Army and he received orders to go to Hawaii. So we are stationed here for 3 years. Technically we have a three year honeymoon because we are stationed in paradise.
Be Unique: We got married on Boston Harbor and treated our guests to a ceremony and reception on a Yacht. We have friends from all over the world (people coming from the west coast and Puerto Rico) and we wanted to make sure they came to enjoy the trip. We selected Boston because of the airports proximity and for its historical value for our guests. They arrived the second of July, got a cruise and a wedding on Boston Harbor the 3rd and ended their week-end watching fireworks on the Fourth.
Favorite Moments: Our favorite moment was after the ceremony, when they pronounced us Married, the Captain of the Boat blew the horn which sounded all through Boston Harbor. 8 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook October 2009
Wedding Planning 101: Get Ready, Get Set... Get Organized! Okay, okay, so you’ve been to your local bookstore, surveyed the rather large collection of wedding books and wondered how anyone even gets through this whole planning process... and why all those wedding planning books are so thick!! This is completely understandable - it is a bit on the daunting side. Planning a wedding is definitely not something you can throw together in a matter of days, and there will certainly be quite a few projects along the way to keep you busy. But these ‘projects’ can actually be fun - a lot of fun! And with a plan, you may even find yourself looking forward to them ;)
3.) Get Started! Begin tackling items on your wedding checklist. Look at the first list of to-do’s in the “12 Months Before” section. Don’t try to do all of these at once - take one at a time and consider putting the others on your calendar so that you know they’ll get taken care of, just not all today! 4.) Don’t be afraid to delegate. Family members and attendants will more than likely be completely willing to help take on some of the planning tasks - if they offer, take them up on it! If there are parts of the planning that you know you don’t need to be (or care to be) directly involved in, ask for help.
The Plan: 1.) Most importantly, keep things SIMPLE. There will always be another photographer to interview, another centerpiece idea, another wedding favor website. When you find something that “clicks” with you, go with it! You’ve just crossed off one more thing your wedding checklist. 2.) Decide on a good filing system before you begin. Order a box of file folders or an accordion file with multiple sections to hold all of your contracts, notes, etc. If you’re really ambitious, consider investing $20-30 in a labeler - it keeps things especially neat and organized. As you go along, designate one folder for each aspect of your planning -- caterer, rehearsal dinner, guest list, etc. www.weddingsourcebook.com
5.) Have FUN! While some tasks will take longer than others, there will be others that will balance out all of the hard work - treating yourself to a day at the spa for example ;) Also, consider subscribing to one or more bridal magazines - when you think you’ve run out of wedding ideas, these glossy guides are a great pick-me up. And lastly, 6.) Don’t worry that you won’t possibly be able to do all of these things... Everything will get done, in due time, and you’ll see all of your hard work pay off when things really start to come together. Your wedding day will be a blast!

Do I Really Need To Hire A Wedding Planner? To some people, hiring a wedding planner is just adding another expense to an already expensive day. But to others, hiring a wedding planner means saving time and money. In fact, it can actually be more cost effective to hire a wedding planner than to try to do it yourself. Below are the top 3 reasons why a wedding planner can help you make your day everything you wanted and more….
by Lynn Brunelle Kennedy LB Events & Marketing
1) We have a budget and need to stick to it… It may initially seem that by hiring a wedding planner you may increase the cost of your wedding. In truth, doing this can actually save you money due to the amazing discounts you couldn’t otherwise access. Event planners are members of an “underground” network of wedding professionals. They know the best vendors with the best possible prices. They also have a lot of contacts that may be willing to help you achieve your dream even if it means cutting into their profits. The truth is, it never hurts to ask for a discount. Wedding planners know this trick and many others that can help you cut costs without sacrificing the quality or style of your wedding. In addition, a wedding planner can help ensure that you stay within your budget, so you can enjoy planning your day with less stress. 2) I just don’t have the time to plan all those details…Yes, there are wedding couples that do not want to plan every detail of their wedding day. They have an idea of what they want, but they need someone else to execute all the small details. Wedding plan-
14 H The Wedding Day Sourcebook
ners can do that. They are experts at details and bringing someone else’s vision to reality. 3) We don’t want to worry about anything on the day of our wedding… This is one of the biggest reasons why couples hire a wedding planner the coordination of the actual wedding day. Most couples do not want to worry about anything on the day of the wedding and this is where the wedding planner comes in. Amongst other things, the wedding planner will make sure the DJ arrives on time, the florist has delivered the bouquets and centerpieces to the correct locations, and that the favors have all been placed at everyone’s place setting. Basically, the wedding planner takes care of all those small details that the couple just does not want to worry about. Most importantly, a wedding planner will keep your day running on time and in the manner that the couple desires. A wedding planner truly gives the couple the ability to enjoy their day essentially worry free. These are just a few reasons why hiring a wedding planner can help a couple through the wedding process. There are many more reasons why hiring a wedding planner can benefit a couple as they walk down the aisle. Le Meridien Sunny Isles: European-style Luxury in Sexy Southern Florida By Michelle Mangio, Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Specialist of Magical Escapes Vacations Imagine for a moment a honeymoon (or even an anniversary or romantic getaway) to a beautiful beach destination – sitting along golden sands in a chic hotel, overlooking a beautiful bay of water. Capturing the essence of the European Riviera, you can choose to escape away at the hotel’s 6000 square foot spa, lounge in your spacious accommodations, or dance the night away at the nearby hot spots. Best of all, it’s a short flight away, and requires no hassles with traveling out of the country. Think it’s an impossible honeymoon dream? Think again. Le Meridien Sunny Isles, a member of the Starwoods brands of hotels, is a modern, luxurious hotel located along the golden sands of Sunny Isles. Close enough to the city to enjoy all it has to offer, but far enough away to be free of the traffic, noise and hassles of the crowds. Best of all, it is in an ideal location between sexy, happening South Beach Miami and the more elegant Fort Lauderdale. For those who want it all – happening night life and gourmet restaurants, shopping, beautiful beaches, pampering spa treatments, and a taste of the European Riviera – Le Meridien Sunny Isles is the place to be. The emphasis on luxury is evident in the standard amenities in every room, including spa-quality products, over-sized bathrooms with marble features, floor-toceiling windows, and balconies offering expansive views. Every room offers a refrigerator, mini-bar, and coffee-maker, plus the other amenities you expect: hairdryer, iron and ironing board, umbrella, bathrobe & slippers, vanity mirror, telephone, separate bath and shower stalls. Plasma screen televisions, wireless internet access (for a small fee), and DVD / CD players are also standard. There are only 50 standard rooms in the hotel, offering views of the Biscayne Bay or the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Stylish and contemporary, they boast light wood paneling, stainless steel, and frosted glass to create a chic, boutique look. Pillow-top mattresses, duvet, 250 thread count sheets, and feather pillows ensure a good night’s sleep. But for a truly stylish stay – and who doesn’t want stylish on their honeymoon? – consider a One-Bedroom Suite, the true focus of the hotel. Le Meridien Sunny Isles boasts 134 of them, in three categories: Grand Deluxe, Ocean Grand Suite, and Luxury Suite. While all One-Bedroom Suites offer the stylish elegance that is the Le Meridien Hallmark, including a King Bed swathed in Egyptian cotton linen and plush
down comforters in the separate bedroom, each offers a different experience. The Grand Deluxe offers discreet balconies, allowing for romantic evenings exploring the sunsets for which southern Florida is famous. A breakfast bar in the main room overlooks an Italian-inspired kitchen, allowing for relaxed breakfasts. Room service is available twenty-four hours, or perhaps you’ll awaken to a breakfast in bed prepared by your new spouse. The Ocean Grand Suite and the Luxury Suite offer a true “wow” moment – walking in to floor-to-ceiling windows, these suites boast a wrap-around balcony affording spectacular views of the ocean. The contemporary kitchen has state-ofthe-art appliances and a dining area, and the spacious living room offers a queen pull-out sofa. The Luxury Suites offer Bay Views, while the Ocean Grand Suites are oceanfront. Want instead an unforgettable Bridal Party, Bachelorette, or Bachelor Party? Or traveling with children? Le Meridien Sunny Isles also offers 2-Bedroom Ocean Grand Suites and 2-Bedroom Luxury Suites, accommodating up to 6 adults. Each bedroom offers a King Bed, and the living room boasts a queen sofa bed. For the truly unforgettable honeymoon experience, consider one of the four Penthouse Suites. The view alone is worth it: spectacular sunrise and sunset views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Miami on the other from your own private rooftop terrace. Even better, enjoy that sunset bathing in your own private Jacuzzi on that roof-top terrace. Really, can it get better than that? The Penthouse Suite boasts 2 Bedrooms, each with a King Bed swathed in Egyptian cotton linen and plush down comforters in the chic elegance for which Le Meridien is known. The spacious living room offers a comfortable sofa that hides a queen pull-out bed, plus an entertainment system with LCD Flat Screen TV, DVD player, and CD player. The dining area is near the contemporary Italian kitchen, and an elegant spiral staircase leads up to the private roof-top terrace and Jacuzzi, with 180-degree views of the ocean and city. Three bathrooms means that you can both spread out – or that a Bridal Party Getaway has plenty of space for all the girls. A Sauna, Steam Room, and Whirlpool is also available for your use. When you decide that you want to get out and about, Le Meridien Sunny Isles offers the perfect location to begin exploring. The natural beauty and unforgettable splendour of the Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park are within an easy drive. For the shopper, both Aventura Mall and the Bal Harbour Shops are both under 5 miles away, offering a plethora of stores and restaurants. South Beach and Fort Lauderdale are both within short drives, offering not only plenty of nightclubs and restaurants, but stunning beach parks and plenty of stretches of sand to enjoy. The Seaquarium, MetroZoo, and other attractions are also nearby, so you’ll never be without something to do. Creative Tips For Budget Bridal Showers When hosting a bridal shower, it can be easy to get carried away. Hosts, typically a close friend or relative of the bride, often feel obligated to give the bride the “perfect” party -- a concept as elusive as it is expensive. However, if you find yourself planning an upcoming bridal shower on a budget, have no fear: It’s entirely possible to plan a tasteful, fun and sentimental gathering without breaking the bank. Here are five time-saving and cost-cutting ways to throw a beautiful bridal shower: Invitations It can be tempting to blow your entire budget for the party on the invitations, but consider saving money (and time) by sending them electronically. Web sites like Pingg.com make sending invitations and tracking responses electronically a breeze. And with an enormous online image database, it’s almost guaranteed that even the pickiest planner will find the perfect invitation design. Food Skip hours of baking and frosting and provide your guests with a creative and low-fat ice cream cake. Ice cream sand-
wiches from The Skinny Cow look sweet when stacked in a pyramid and topped with creative garnishes. Your guests will be thankful for a low-fat snack option, and you will have time to actually enjoy the party. Sandwiches come in strawberry shortcake, chocolate, vanilla, vanilla/chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, mint and cookies n’ cream flavors. Use one flavor for a consistent look or mix and match flavors for extra guest options. Drink Sangria is an unexpected and delicious drink to serve at your shower. Added bonus: the ingredients are inexpensive and easy to find. You can even substitute grape juice and seltzer water for wine for a tasty non-alcoholic version. The only other ingredients required are slices of fresh fruits such as oranges, pears and peaches, and about 1/4 cup of sugar. For variations on the classic recipe, check out Cooks.com or AllRecipes.com Games Rework an old classic by playing a game of Bridal Shower Bingo. First, create copies of a blank grid resembling a bingo card. As the guests arrive, have them fill out the
grid with gifts that they think the bride will receive. (The free space is in the middle and players can write their own gift in this space.) As the bride opens a gift, players cross it off their bingo card. Award a prize to the first person to fill five spaces in a row, across or diagonally. Favors Pamper your guests with homemade body scrubs in simple, elegant glass mason jars. You can even customize the recipe below to include your favorite scents and colors. Homemade Body Scrub: You will need: 3 cups Epsom salt (or coarse sea salt), 1 cup oil (almond, canola or olive oil usually works best), Essential oils for fragrance, Mason jars Instructions: First, measure out your salt and pour into a large container. Measure out the oil and slowly pour into the salt while stirring. Finally, add the essential oil to the desired strength. Attach any desired ribbons, hang tags or other decorations to the outside of the jar.

How to Make Out of Town Guests Feel at Home Your best friend from college now lives six states away, and the cousin you grew up with is on the opposite coast from you. They may be thousands of miles away, but your out-of-town guests still play an important role in making your wedding day everything you dreamed it could be. “Americans are more mobile and in-touch than at any time in our history,” says Barry Glick of NAVTEQ’s Traffic.com. “Cell phones and e-mail enable us to maintain close relationships with loved ones who live thousands of miles away, but on your wedding day, you’ll want to have them by your side.” With some careful pre-wedding planning and a little help from local family and friends, you can help ensure out-of-towners will make the trip – and enjoy the journey. Here are some tips: * To make distant loved ones feel like a part of the pre-wedding excitement, consider sending an e-newsletter in the months leading up to the big day. You can do this on a monthly basis or weekly, whatever fits into your schedule. Fill the newsletter with information about your planning progress (“We booked the reception hall.”), updates on RSVPs (“Don’t forget – RSVPs are due back in just two weeks.”), and amusing anecdotes about life as a bride-to-be (“I gained two pounds tasting wedding cakes last week!). * Create your own wedding Web page where you can include useful photos that will help out-of-town guests recognize important landmarks when they visit. Post images of the outside of your wedding location and reception site, so that when guests arrive they’ll recognize the spot and know they’re in the right place. * If guests are taking a long road-trip to attend, help them out by mapping their route for them before they depart. They may have navigations systems in their cars or they may rely on Internetbased map resources. Once they are in your area, Traffic.com is a great site to help them plan the best route to your specific wedding venue. The website provides real-time information on delays, traffic jams and detours, as well. Guests can update the information you provide by logging on to www.Traffic.com themselves, or calling (866) MY-TRAFC (866-698-7232). * For guests who have cars equipped with a navigation system, a map update purchased through www.navigation.com provides many benefits: * Confidence in knowing the best route to the wedding. * Satisfaction in finding the quickest way around a detour. * Comfort in finding the closest hotel, restaurant or ATM. * Freedom from not having to pull over and ask for directions. * Recruit in-town family and friends to act as personal assistants for out-of-town guests, helping with travel arrangements, hotel reservations, emergencies and other trouble-shooting. Introduce the visiting loved ones with your near-home volunteers by e-mail or phone. * Negotiate a good hotel room rate for out-of-town guests. If you’re having your reception in a hotel, the property will usually offer a discounted rate for your guests. If your reception is in a hall that’s not affiliated with a particular property, research hotels within a reasonable driving distance and approach them asking for a group rate discount. For large groups, some hotels may even agree to provide your guests with shuttle service to your reception site.
