ot surprisingly, a big shift in economic thought is taking place across the world

spurred on by these new technologies, and is demanding a level of policy change that has not yet materialized. One such policy Jamaicans are likely to hear about in the near

future, is the idea of universal basic income (UBI). A Universal Basic Income is supposed to provide all members of society with a basic income which they do not have to work for, in order to reduce inequality and provide social assurance.

lobally, there is growing recognition that providing unconditional income

in a well-funded way is a valid response to poverty and a possible mechanism to address the effects of automation and DUWLoFLDO LQWHOOLJHQFH )RU -DPDLFD WKLV ZRXOG require an ambitious new vision - one that seeks to sustain and strengthen the culture of hard work and entrepreneurship and foster greater social cohesion by ensuring the wellbeing of everyone in society. Despite various apprehensions regarding WKH HIoFDF\ RI VXFK D SURJUDPPH LQ RWKHU jurisdictions, there is little argument as to its potential.

oday however, we are far from agreement on the best way to build this kind of universal basic income and even the manner in which the payments should be distributed. But what we are

DJUHHG RQ LV WKH IDFW WKDW D WUDQVIRUPDWLRQDO WHFKQRORJ\ ZLOO UDGLFDOO\ FKDQJH VRFLHW\ LQ WKH QH[W decade and will transform full-time, long-term career employment jobs to short-term freelance contract work. It is already happening. And while I remain optimistic that Jamaica will make ample use of its recent economic gains, I am worried that a lack of vision may see us winding up where we were before. UBI may not be an immediate policy priority for Jamaica, it’s not too early to start the discussion.

Smartphones, Smart Watches, Tablets and Smartphones. Information Technology has created a life of convenience and makes what was once considered impossible, possible. It has created a world where everything is connected and where information moves at an alarming speed. Everything we do is now fueled by digitization, mobilization, augmentation, disintermediation, DXWRPDWLRQ DQG WKH OLVW JRHV RQ :KDW ZDV RQFH VFLHQFH oFWLRQ LV QRZ VFLHQFH fact. The need for speed in how we consume data has also increased the speed at which our brains work. Everything is now wired and intelligent. So many new tech gadgets have been invented to simplify our lives and make everyday activities more convenient. Mobile sits at the heart of such gadgets. Surveys show that we consume data faster on mobile devices. The smaller the device, the more convenient it is and the faster we are able to consume content. The rise of mobile has seen content consumption moving from 2.5 seconds on a laptop to 1.7 seconds on smartphones. The perception of time is even faster on mobile devices. While we spend an average of 3 – 4 hours per day on our mobile devices, we underestimate that time by 50%. However, with a recall of content faster on mobile devices, it’s understandable why naturally we underestimate the time spent. People thumb through over 300 feet of content per day with a recall of news feed they see in less than .25 seconds Smart devices are the must have gadgets in this era.
