Innovation Heats up a Cold Economy It's a downturn, folks, so we might as well put on something light and silky and get comfortable: as we sweat bill payments, it helps if our cami can breathe; if we're getting out of bed to look for work, a chemise - a little bit soft, a little bit sexy - is just the thing to make us feel like a million bucks. "They say that in hard times, the two things that do well are lingerie and food," says Tiffany Ajmo of fashion-forward Blush. "Both help people deal with depression." The people at McDonald's, one of two profitable stocks in the '08 markets, would almost certainly agree. So does Laurence Teinturier of CurvExpo. "Both the New York and the Las Vegas shows are sold out," she notes. "But people are coming here to meet with partners. Not suppliers. Partners." As partners, Canadian manufacturers are increasingly in American buyers' comfort zones - we're the neighbour-nextdoor who's always got just what you need. In-stock programs, lightning-fast turnaround, reliable shipping and uncomplicated borders are table stakes for Canadian companies, and if you ask any manufacturer what sets us apart, superior value and great pricing is always in the answer. Service is another standout. Bodywrap, a Canadian shapewear manufacturer expanding aggressively into more American and European markets this fall, says her company is investing time to help retail staff better understand the product. "We're very attentive," says Catherine Marchand. But what makes Canada really seductive is our innovative way with lace and bamboo, cotton and silk, bias and cut. In short, it's our design sensibilities - our ability to make lingerie new, month by month and season by season to create fresh fashion that brings customers back. "Buyers are looking for new ideas," says Lisa Ceccucci of Grenier. "Everyone wants to differentiate themselves." Canadian manufacturers are answering the call with innovations in every collection, whether they're designed for well-being and comfort or all-out romance. In fact, so dynamic have the changes been in lingerie that as seasons go by, the lines between comfort and seduction, in8

ner and outer, increasingly blur: Sleepwear becomes more like yoga gear or morphs into activewear - which might also be loungewear or, if you like, a "spa" collection. Basics take on the qualities of high-performance athletic layers, shapewear becomes ever more like true lingerie, and lingerie, the formerly most intimate, is now - thanks to a long line of sex symbols from Sophia Loren to Madonna to, well, Victoria Beckham - exuberantly extroverted. Lingerie, in the colours and patterns of ready-to-wear, parades down catwalks around the planet, peeks through celebritys' shirts, dances in clubs and goes to the office. Manufacturer Arianne is a longtime pro at this 'wear me anywhere' versatility, hunting the globe for innovative fabric and fashionable colours that are hot as display pieces and cool as layers. For Fall '09, Kenan is switch-hitting between lounge and "urbanwear" with a new label called FF Lifestyle. "It's a group of jackets, pants, tunics, camisoles and T-shirts meant to be layered or worn with a favorite pair of jeans," says designer Patrice Tremblay. "It's not just another track suit." For fall, the ready-to-wear-conscious Canadian designers we talked to are working with deep, rich colours like wine, ruby and port, along with copper and chocolate (luxury lives on in colourways!) and basics get a jolt of intense colour and pattern as formerly outside prints like jacquards and plaids join perennial favourite, animal prints, as part of fall's innerwear story. For clear-conscience comfort in tough times, the Canadians are offering a growing number of soft, stretchy, earth-friendly collections: The most alluring environmentalists will be wearing bamboo-spandex combinations and organic cotton by Simon Chang at Patricia Lingerie, or a piece of KayAnna's newly expanded bamboo Spa line. "Bambou" and recycled-fibre "Eco-skins" for men and women at Intimode (JM) turn a smaller carbon footprint into sexy everyday basics. Other manufacturers are offering comfort plus glamour for all: "All women want to look feminine," says Montelle's Kim Haddad, whose company is offering its characteristic fashion-aware lingerie in sizes up to DD for Fall 09. At Grenier, a new group of lightweight shapewear pieces is constructed to allow women to hook their own bras into them. "Women are much more comfortable in their own bodies," says Grenier's Ceccucci. "They don't want to lose 30 pounds in a girdle any more; they just want to get rid of the jiggle. The firmness gives them the sexy feel." In Canada, when the going gets tough, the tough take innovative fabrics, provocative colours and irresistible design - and make people feel sexy. And then they go to market. Enjoy the show.
