BUILDING A STRONG FUTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN STARTS HERE. Harlem RBI’s mission is to provide inner-city youth with opportunities to Play, Learn and Grow. We use the power of teams to coach, teach and inspire youth to recognize their potential and realize their dreams. For 20 years, Harlem RBI has developed an academic, enrichment and sports program that empowers youth to lead healthy, productive lives. As a result, Harlem RBI’s college-educated graduates are now giving back to East Harlem by returning to work in their community. A new cycle has begun. While East Harlem will always remain our first priority, Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School are now building a team and infrastructure that will allow us to grow outside the boundaries of this community and transform even more lives. BUILDING THE FUTURE Our 20th Anniversary year was all that we hoped for and more. In 2011, we expanded the first-rate programs and services for which Harlem RBI is known, and to spectacular results: 100% of our seniors graduated from high school, and all of them were accepted into college. At the same time, we took a deep, hard look at the future, rolled up our sleeves and began to plan strategically for the next era at Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School. We are so honored to be of service to the families in East Harlem. Even with our capital campaign well underway, record-breaking fundraising events and an ever-expanding staff, our primary focus will always be the success of our youth. With this 2011 annual report, you will see that enrollment in our REAL Kids summer programs continues to grow. You will see an extended day and year model at DREAM Charter School, with fun and engaging programs that develop a school-wide culture of curiosity and learning. And you will see more Harlem RBI alumni returning as staff, coaches and mentors, and even as members of the Board of Directors, all dedicated to giving our kids the attention they need to thrive. If you are a new friend to Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School, you will see how effectively we leverage the power of teams to bring out the best in our kids. Through our programs on the field and in the classroom, we are committed to unlocking the potential of each and every child so that they can go on to lead happy, healthy and productive lives. Our 20th Anniversary was such an extraordinary success, you would think it will be difficult to top in the years to come—but we will strive to do just that. For the kids in East Harlem, we have no other choice. As we continue to work towards building a permanent home for Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School, we know that what we are really building is the future for our youth, brick by brick.

OUR APPROACH Harlem RBI’s unique brand of youth development, which includes participation on a baseball or softball team and engagement in group-based academic and enrichment programming, has evolved over the organization’s 20-year history to best meet the needs of East Harlem youth.
OUR GOALS FOR YOUTH When Harlem RBI youth graduate from the program, they are expected to be:

WHAT IT TAKES
HARLEM RBI YOUTH: A YEAR IN THE LIFE A softball player at Harlem RBI has a little more on her plate than simply going to practices and winning a few games. Being a softball player at Harlem RBI means she is giving back to the community through various service projects, getting homework help from qualified volunteers, working at her first job, filling out college applications to her top choice schools, staying healthy with winter fitness clinics and much more. At Harlem RBI, a softball player takes all the values learned on the field and applies them off the field in any situation, all-year round. To give you a picture of what this looks like, let’s follow Manda, a 10th grade softball pitcher who loves hip-hop and math, as she hustles through a year of activity at Harlem RBI.

JANUARY
Workouts and Homework The year begins with open workouts, where all of the girls participate in team building and fitness-oriented activities. On the weekdays throughout the school year, Manda goes to Study Hall with her teammates in TeamWorks, Harlem RBI’s program for youth in ninth and tenth grades. At Study Hall, she completes her American literature and geometry homework with the help of volunteer tutors.
FEBRUARY
Giving Back Manda is part of Care and Connect, a youth-directed community service program. This month, Manda and her teammates research native vegetation as they help design a community garden. Every Saturday, winter softball practice continues with her team, the Saints.
MARCH
Making the Cut Spring is finally here, which means Manda and the Saints get outside for weekend practice on Harlem RBI’s Field of Dreams. This month, Manda focuses on tryouts for the senior division Travel Team. As jittery as she is at the tryouts, her nerves are no match to her signature fastball and .450 batting average. She makes the team! At the end of the month, she and her TeamWorks friends plant the community garden they’ve been planning for weeks.
APRIL
Developing Job Skills The Youth Employment Program (YEP) begins in April. In addition to TeamWorks Study Hall, Manda spends three hours a week developing job skills such as resume writing, interviewing, work ethic, teamwork and professional dress. Meanwhile, softball practice increases to two weekdays a week, as Opening Day brings the Saints up against the Brooklyn Angels. Manda’s pitching is in top form, but it took the skills of all of her teammates to bring the Saints to an Opening Day win.
MAY
Fastballs and Non-fiction Manda preps for the citywide softball tournament happening on Memorial Day Weekend. And though the Saints lose to the Lower East Side Twins in a close one, Manda’s fastball gets her picked for the Northeast Regionals. In the classroom, Manda works on her memoir for My Life, My Words. In this program, Manda enjoys writing about her family as a creative outlet to share her story, critically explore her life through text and sharpen her use of literary devices.

Making the Grade Manda studies hard for the Regents examinations. Through Fresh Prep at TeamWorks, she and her teammates use the mnemonic power of hip-hop to drill the content of the Math, Living Environment, Earth Science, and Global Regents exams. A budding beatboxer and die-hard fan of Mos Def, Manda rocks her Regents at the end of the month.
JULY–AUGUST
Working It Even with the Northeast Regionals and RBI Softball League Championships to practice for, Manda is excited for her summer job as an assistant coach in the REAL Kids Summer program which serves the elementaryaged participants at Harlem RBI. Manda also attends a college campus visit at Fordham University and a career panel featuring professionals in finance, law, accounting, fashion and non-profit education. Her participation is a requirement for the paid summer job, but Manda considers it a bonus!
SEPTEMBER
Dreaming Big Time for Fall Ball! That’s when Manda and the Travel Team play against teams from all over Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan through the month of November. Now that she is a Junior, Manda transitions from TeamWorks to DreamWorks, Harlem RBI’s program for 11th and 12th graders. The Entrepreneurship Program at DreamWorks gets Manda thinking about possible business ventures she and her teammates can execute throughout the year. The practice of writing business plans, budgeting and marketing inspires Manda to research colleges known for their business schools.
OCTOBER– DECEMBER
The Big Test Manda spends much of the fall gearing up for her SATs. She knows her score plays a crucial role in college acceptance, and is thankful that DreamWorks has implemented a ten-week program coaching the content of this big exam. Additionally, bi-weekly Pitching Clinics not only focus on the mechanics of pitching, but also introduce yoga and calisthenics. Manda notices her own improvement and cannot wait for Opening Day when she will be pitching for the 11th grade Lady Royals.

TEACHING WORK-READINESS ERVING MARTINEZ HARLEM RBI YOUTH I AGE 16 I GRADE 11 PLAYS ON THE KINGS TEAM Erving participated in the TeamWorks Summer Youth Employment program in which youth develop professional skills through work experience and work-readiness workshops.
“Over the summer, I got to work as a co-coach for 11–12 year-olds on the Lightning Team. Coaching younger kids and working with my peer co-coaches gave me a huge sense of responsibility and teamwork. I know that a strong sense of teamwork will help me later in life, even off the baseball field. I know that teamwork will help me to be a leader in any age group, younger or older. I come to Harlem RBI everyday because I know that everyone really cares for me here. They care about my goals and show me the model to being a successful adult.”
SERVING THE COMMUNITY PATRICK BYRNES HARLEM RBI MATH AND SCIENCE VOLUNTEER TUTOR Patrick lives in the Upper East Side and has been tutoring at Harlem RBI for four years. Having studied Public Policy and Economics in college, he knows that math and science exercises have real-world applications, and loves sharing that Aha! moment with his students.
“I like using concrete examples to help kids understand abstract concepts. Parallel lines are Park Avenue and Lexington. A 90 degree angle is First and 101st. If a batter is hitting 3 for 10, his average is .300. Then I use that example to get them thinking about other numbers, and they get it. The best part about tutoring is coming in during the spring, when the kids are getting their acceptance letters from college. They have cut-out paper baseballs hung on the walls, each one representing a college that accepted one of the kids. It’s great to watch the lineup of baseballs get longer and longer until it covers the whole board.”

ASSESSMENT USING DATA TO IMPROVE INSTRUCTION. • DREAM developed a robust assessment system to monitor student progress and achievement and to improve instructional quality. • Teachers dedicated significant time to score and analyze assessment data and developed necessary tools to apply findings to daily instruction.
CULTURE CREATING A COMMUNITY FOR ACHIEVEMENT. • DREAM advanced school culture by implementing practices such as school uniforms and weekly community gatherings where the school’s core values were instilled in the entire school community. • School leadership and teachers reinforced the value of achievement through communicating a consistent message of high academic expectations and holding family-school accountability meetings.
FAMILY ENGAGEMENT EXTENDING LEARNING TO THE LIVING ROOM. • Initiatives such as DREAM Family Action Council (DFAC) mobilized families to engage in their children’s education, organized community events and provided a strong platform for families to impact the school’s development. • 99% of families surveyed were happy with the opportunities to be involved in their child’s education at DREAM.

WHAT IT TAKES
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DREAMER Meet Christian Huertas. Christian is a member of the founding class at DREAM Charter School, entering in 2008 as a first grader. Now in the fourth grade, Christian has developed into a scholar, an artist, a poet and a budding snake breeder. If snake breeding does not work out as a career, Christian hopes to be a teacher. A DREAM education requires a great deal of hard work. To see what it takes, let’s follow Christian through a full day of school last year when he was a third-grade DREAMer.

Community Gathering Christian and his father Eddie arrive at school just in time to greet principal Eve Colavito at the door, who gives Christian a firm handshake before he walks into a fresh week at DREAM. His class files into the gymnasium for the weekly Community Gathering. As a member of the lead class, Christian has lived the DREAM values since first grade, and he now models those values to the entire DREAM community.

Guided Reading Group Christian goes straight into Guided Reading Group time in the classroom. His class splits according to their reading levels for more individualized and targeted attention. Christian works with a small group led by instructors committed to building reading skills.

Mathematics Math is one of Christian’s favorite subjects. He and his fellow classmates are learning multiplication and division. Christian develops his own problem-solving strategies and is encouraged by his teachers to collaborate with his classmates to figure out the answers to the math problems.

Physical Education In the past, Christian has participated in a variety of instructional health and wellness activities, such as nutrition and cooking, gymnastics and basketball. Now he’s taking swimming lessons in third grade.

Lunch and Recess Time to fuel up and recharge—lunch and recess! Christian dives into healthy food options such as salad and fruit. Science Christian learns science by doing science. This year, one of the projects for third graders is to learn about electricity. By using the scientific method, Christian discovers how a switch turns a circuit on and off.

Literacy Studies Literacy Studies focuses on skills and strategies to understand, summarize and write literary works such as poems and short stories. This cycle of Literacy Studies is special for Christian because he is a poet.

Social Studies Christian experiences the world through Social Studies, exploring cultural diversity, unfamiliar environments and the community he lives in. Today, Christian and his classmates learn about immigration history in East Harlem in preparation for their field trip to El Museo Del Barrio.
4:00–6:00PM
REAL Kids After-School Christian ends his day by going to REAL Kids After-School Program where he continues to develop his academic, social and emotional skills. Literacy workshops help to reinforce reading and writing skills he learned during the day. He also participates in teambuilding exercises with his teammates before they all go out and learn the fundamentals of baseball at clinic. The day winds down as Christian finishes his homework with help from his coaches and teachers before he’s picked up by his dad and heads home. It was a good day.

SUPPORTING PARENTS NIKKIA STEVENSON MOTHER OF DREAM STUDENT LENOX RICHARDS I KINDERGARTEN Nikkia enrolled her daughter Lenox into DREAM this year after admiring the high-quality educational curriculum and established structure at the school. Nikkia is currently a part of the DREAM Family Action Council which keeps her involved with the major decisions at DREAM and the progress of her child’s education.
“I am a single parent, and DREAM Charter School makes being a single parent so much easier. They are incredibly supportive to me and my daughter Lenox. She gets extra math and extra reading here, and I can tell she likes it because she remembers what she learns and tells me about her new words, even on the weekend. Lenox says she wants to be a singer, a writer and a doctor, and I believe she can.”
INVESTING IN YOUNG LEARNERS RUBERNETTE CHAVIS GRANDMOTHER OF DREAM STUDENT MEKHI DELEON I GRADE 2 Rubernette Chavis joined the DREAM family when Mekhi, her grandson, enrolled as a kindergartener in 2009. All year-round, including summers, Rubernette works closely with DREAM staff to help Mekhi reach his full potential through initiatives such as establishing a homework schedule at home, creating a fixed bedtime and implementing a home-school behavior chart.
“Mekhi was a part of the first REAL Kids Satchel Paige Program this summer as a first grader. As a parent, what I like most about the early start of the REAL Kids Program for DREAM students is the consistency of having the same staff work with Mekhi all year long. The program itself is so rich with academic and enrichment activities and Mekhi really looks forward to going everyday. Now he’s a second grader at DREAM, a REAL Kid at Harlem RBI and supported by many of the same coaches, peers and teachers!”

A TRUE GAME CHANGER While all baseball fans recognize Mark Teixeira as one of the elite players in the game, in 2011, the public also witnessed Mark as an all-star citizen. Since joining the Harlem RBI Board of Directors last year, Mark has stepped up to the plate as Co-Chair of the organization’s capital campaign, donated $100,000 toward our college preparation programs and $1 million to the capital campaign, served as an honoree for the annual gala and launched his own social media campaign, Dream Team 25, to further support Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School’s work. JULY 26, 2011 Walmart Donation Mark appears at the Field of Dreams to thank The Walmart Foundation for their $125,000 donation toward Harlem RBI’s youth employment program for its high school-aged youth. Mark speaks with youth about their summer jobs and the challenges of balancing work, study and play.
AUGUST 10, 2011 REAL Kids Championship In the culminating event of the baseball season at Harlem RBI, Mark throws out the first pitch for the REAL Kids Championship Games. He also spends time with a group of summer coaches who supported the Dream Team 25 campaign.
SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 Mark Meets His All-Stars Mark handpicks nine Dream Team 25 donors to spend the day with him at Yankee Stadium. The event includes a stadium tour, box seats to a game, on-field recognition for their support and dinner with Mark at the Delta Air Lines clubhouse.

LOOKING FORWARD
Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School are changing more lives and growing faster than ever. But with a start-up school that adds 50 students each year and after-school programs that serve more than 1,000 children, Harlem RBI’s ability to expand its reach is limited by lack of space. Set to break ground in mid-2012, Harlem RBI and DREAM’s new home will provide critical resources for our programs to ensure the growth and success of our families. The state-of-theart building will include program and office space for Harlem RBI, a full K–8 school facility for DREAM with a gymnasium and garden, as well as a community center, public park and affordable housing for families in East Harlem. The project is scheduled to open in time for DREAM’s 2014–2015 school year.
COMMUNITY SPACE Located at East 104th Street and Second Avenue, the building will include: • 5,000sf of program space and a home office for Harlem RBI • A 60,000sf school to serve as the permanent home of DREAM Charter School • 90,000sf of low-income housing for East Harlem families • A 25,000sf public park where all of East Harlem can Play, Learn and Grow

OUR VISION In FY2011, Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School completed a new Strategic Plan. This plan, which will serve as the organization’s roadmap through 2016, will help ensure high quality programming for the youth and families we serve. The Strategic Plan includes designs to bring Harlem RBI’s proven program model to kids in other New York City neighborhoods and other cities nationwide, increasing our impact and strengthening our organization.
VISION STATEMENT After months of research, interviews and analysis, the Strategic Planning Team determined a bold long-term vision for the organization:
