FOR VINCE A good coach makes a better player. A great coach makes a better person. —Vince Coleman
Fifteen years ago, Harlem RBI staff got an email from a prospective volunteer named Vince Coleman. The office immediately started buzzing. Could it be the Vince Coleman— the major league baseball player who held the record for three consecutive 100-steal seasons? We soon found out that it was a different guy, which was just as well, because our Vince Coleman proved to be a very special kind of all-star. Vince came on board in 1998 to serve as a volunteer coach. In just two seasons we realized that we needed more of Vince’s time and hired him to join Harlem RBI full-time as the Baseball and Softball Program Director. Vince quickly became the heart and soul of the organization. Youth were drawn to his infinite patience and quiet steadiness; staff and volunteers admired his unifying presence and unwavering belief in the potential of all people. When Vince announced this year that he was departing Harlem RBI to become an ordained minister, it did not come as a surprise. We knew that his work on our Field of Dreams was on a higher plane all along. Vince, we wish you a plentiful and abundant ministry—one that exceeds the love and commitment you gave to us, if such a thing is possible.

ON WINS As the year draws to a close, we at Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School take a moment to reflect on what we have built and where we are headed. This year, our colleague and friend Vince Coleman moved on from his position as Baseball and Softball Program Director to rise to new challenges in community service as an ordained minister. Throughout his 15 years at Harlem RBI, Vince demonstrated that hard work and perseverance make it possible to realize our dreams. As Vince courageously steps onto a new playing field, we will continue to apply his lessons here at home. In the pages of this 2013 Annual Report, Coach Vince Coleman’s core principles of the ballgame come to life as we share them alongside the stories and experiences of our Harlem RBI and DREAM family. And what an amazing year it’s been! Harlem RBI was again voted one of the “Best NonProfits to Work For” by The NonProfit Times. Our youth excelled as 100 percent of our seniors graduated high school and our senior boys made it to the RBI World Series. We provided more young people than ever before with opportunities to Play, Learn and Grow by opening DREAM Middle School and setting up shop in the South Bronx. And we continue to learn and grow as an organization—to expand our vision, improve our operations and connect more deeply with the communities we serve. We look forward to what 2014 will bring and hope you’ll continue to stay close and experience the magic with us. HARLEM RBI MISSION Harlem RBI’s mission is to provide inner-city youth with opportunities to Play, Learn and Grow. We use the power of teams to coach, teach and inspire youth to recognize their potential and realize their dreams. OUR APPROACH Harlem RBI’s unique brand of youth development, which includes participation on a baseball or softball team and engagement in group-based academic and enrichment programming, has evolved over the organization’s 22-year history to best meet the needs of East Harlem and South Bronx youth.

HARLEM RBI PROGRAMS Harlem RBI’s long-term goals for youth are achieved through participation in a comprehensive series of programs spanning kindergarten through college. In addition to the academic and enrichment activities listed below, all Harlem RBI participants play on a baseball or softball team.

Rookies learn the basics of baseball, softball and teamwork.
REAL Kids build literacy, social and emotional skills by participating in academic enrichment and health and wellness activities in a team setting.
TeamBuilders develop the academic and social skills to transition to middle and high school, while learning how to make positive life choices, form supportive relationships and develop confidence.

TeamWorks youth develop academic, leadership and employment skills. They also receive support in their pursuit of post-secondary education through college selection and application assistance, SAT preparation and financial aid services.
As Harlem RBI alumni, Legends are supported with individualized and group support to ensure they graduate from college and begin a successful career.
Social work services at Harlem RBI provide a battery of support for our youth, their families and the community. Youth participate in peer groups, targeted workshops and counseling. As needed, our social work team also provides crisisintervention and referrals to outside agencies.

Practice the possibilities. Create every possible situation during practice. Don’t just do the things you know. Turn double plays, field slow rollers, make barehanded pickups, play the ball off the fence and get caught in a rundown. Building confidence, one page at a time When Darla joined the REAL Kids Clemente team, she was quiet, reserved and uncomfortable with reading. A reading assessment showed that she tested below grade level. It was clear that having never experienced success with reading, the mere suggestion of a book made her anxious. An intensive intervention began: Darla worked one-on-one with Krista, her Learning Coach; participated in small group work with youth at a similar reading level; practiced reading independently and out loud; worked on her listening comprehension skills; and journaled about her reading. By the end of summer her effort paid off and Darla improved by an entire reading level in just six weeks. It was a moment of victory for Darla, Krista and Darla’s family. Darla gained confidence as she experienced her own growth and discovered she was capable of success. This is just the beginning of another Harlem RBI kid recognizing her potential and realizing her dreams.

the best players ARE THE most coachable. You will only improve if you act on the coaching you receive. Being coachable allows you to grow and achieve your potential.

Teamwork wins! At the beginning of the REAL Kids-South Bronx season, members of the fifth grade Knights didn’t get along. Individually, they were solid ball players—but they argued, yelled, and couldn’t follow directions. Coaches realized the Knights needed to understand Teamwork. They started playing competitive games in the classroom and created a narrative video on cooperation. “In the video, we were nice to each other and apologized for arguing. Then, we started doing the same in real life,” said Francis. By practicing communication, respect and teamwork, the Knights learned to resolve conflicts on and off the field. And in true knightly form, their happily ever after looked like this: In the first ever REAL Kids-South Bronx Championship Game, the Knights brought home the championship title.
Focus on behavior, not JUST outcomes. TIP

The results of a practice or a game are not completely up to you. But your behavior, approach and attitude are. At the end of the day, you are the only one who knows whether you gave it your all.
New kid on the block fits right in When she joined Harlem RBI last year, seventh grader Julissa had never played softball. She struggled to get up to speed with her teammates on the Jaguars, many of whom had been playing for years. Julissa focused on learning the rules of the game and put in the extra practice time. She also brought a great attitude. In short order, Julissa became a star both on the field and in study hall. Always ready to make the play, cheer on a teammate or help others with a homework problem, Julissa’s efforts have paid off. In her very first year at Harlem RBI, the Jaguars nominated her to the Harlem RBI Youth Leadership Council and she claimed her team’s Most Valuable Player Award.

“I’m good at learning” Sebastian, a DREAM Charter School scholar, was a whiz at solving math problems. He was always first to raise his hand with the correct answer and he proudly explained his work to the class with confidence. But when it came to reading, Sebastian resisted. Knowing how much he loved math problems, his teacher, Ms. Salgado, required him to read at home if he wanted to continue sharing his math stories. To motivate him, Ms. Salgado highlighted Sebastian’s strengths, including his willingness to share strategies and help other students. Once Sebastian realized that reading would help him master other subjects and understand more complex math stories, he put in the effort and increased his reading skills dramatically. Sebastian was beaming when he said, “I like reading now, because when I read, I learn. I’m good at learning.”

5 count THE bounces. Practice fielding ground balls by counting out loud each time the ball hops toward you. The act of concentrating on the number of bounces will train your eyes and improve your focus. REAL-LIFE MATH Many DREAM Charter School families were concerned that they wouldn’t be able to help their young scholars with their math homework. DREAM responded by inviting families to learn CGI, or “Cognitively Guided Instruction,” in special family workshops. With CGI, teachers personalize story problems that feature real-life scenarios using the students' names. At “Pizza Fraction Night” for example, families learned how to support their scholars through interactive activities that gave them different strategies for complex math problems. Now at the supermarket, fifth grader Armani helps her mom find the best deals. “Mom tells me the budget, and I use CGI to figure out how to get everything we need within that budget.”

Visualize SUCCESS. Close your eyes and remember walking up to the plate, the pitcher’s wind-up and how you kept your eye on the ball. Remember the sound of your bat making contact. Visualize your best swing every day and it will carry over to game time. Whatever it takes DREAM Charter School third grader Souwadou is improving her reading skills through an innovative teaching technique that promotes creative self-expression. She is participating in a new program called WIN, or “What I Need.” In small WIN groups, Souwadou gets extra support for reading and story comprehension. One of the many methods that Intervention Specialist Leticia Sanchez uses to keep Souwadou engaged is to ask her to read aloud in the voice of story characters. She will roar the text like a mighty lion or whisper the words like a tiny mouse. Ms. Sanchez is already seeing increased interest and confidence: “I ask the other kids, ‘Who else wants to read like a storyteller?’ and all the hands shoot up.”

The Class of 2013 Pitches a Perfect Game The Class of 2013 showed us how to play as a team. Many of the team members, along with Senior Captain Gilbert Gonzalez, had been playing together ever since they started in the seventh grade as Eagles. With Coach Angel Perez leading the way, the Eagles learned how to support each other and grow as a team. With that effort, the Eagles made it to the championship game against the eighth grade Stars. In an epic upset, the Eagles beat the upperclassmen. Gilbert said, “That was when we got it. That was when we really got closer as a team, built confidence and realized that everything was possible by working together.”
Seven years later, the Eagles, now the Grays, made it to the NYC RBI League Championships. The Grays knew this was their last season together and gave it their all. Unfortunately, this time the game ended in a loss. At the end of the game, the team huddled together and co-captain Justin Perez spoke to his teammates, “I don’t care that we didn’t win this championship. I care that we grew into this family and brotherhood.” Well said, Justin. In June, 100 percent of the Grays and the Lady Yanks—yes, the entire 2013 Senior Class—graduated high school. Congratulations Class of 2013 for pitching a perfect game.

8 CREATE A COHESIVE UNIT. When building a great team, your goal is to turn a group of individual players with individual talents into a high-performing, cohesive unit. Modeling a culture of success To ensure the best program delivery at Harlem RBI and DREAM, we hire the very best performers to join our team. Loanky de Jesus, TeamBuilders Program Coordinator for sixth and seventh grade boys, exemplifies the type of dedicated engagement that Harlem RBI and DREAM staff is known for. At a pivotal age when many young boys start to lose confidence in their academic abilities and are confronting new challenges, youth often approach Loanky with real life questions—How do you get a driver’s license? or How do you ask a girl out? Loanky loves his role as mentor. “It humbles me to be the one these young men ask. And I’m glad they’re getting their answers from us and not television or song lyrics,” said Loanky. On and off the field, Loanky models what it means to communicate effectively and practice respect for self and others. Now imagine a staff of more than 125 members with the same dedication and high standard of performance. Welcome to the team at Harlem RBI and DREAM.

Governance Matters Now more than ever, the Harlem RBI Board of Directors is made up of an incredible group of high-performing individuals who work as a team to forward the mission of Harlem RBI. This brand of strong governance not only affords us the resources to serve our youth, but also attracts some of the country’s most powerful executives to our board, such as our newest member, Bob Kerrey.
NEW HARLEM RBI BOARD MEMBER The Honorable Bob Kerrey Bob Kerrey is the Managing Director of Allen and Company. Previously, Bob Kerrey was the Executive Chairman of the Minerva Institute for Research and Scholarship, supporting The Minerva Project, which provides an exceptional liberal arts and sciences education with a redefined student body, reinvented curriculum, rigorous academic standards, cutting-edge technology, and an immersive global experience. In 2011, Bob Kerrey completed his tenure as seventh President of The New School, a university founded on strong democratic ideals and daring educational practices—an environment that was well suited for his leadership. Prior to The New School, Bob Kerrey represented Nebraska in the United States Senate. Bob Kerrey also served three years in the United States Navy.
A FOCUS ON finance 2013 brought exciting new challenges for Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School. We continued to receive increases in all revenue categories including restricted government funding. While this meant quickly adapting to substantial financial complexity, our finance team responded without a single error. In fact, their rigor and dedication led us through an intricate New Markets Tax Credit process that netted the organization over $5 million for both our capital project and ongoing programmatic expenses. “As we grow and our finances become more complex, we will continue to enhance the finance department’s capacity and expertise to ensure strong support for the needs of a thriving organization,” said Natasha Pallan, Chief Financial Officer. “Ultimately, healthy fiscal practices in our offices allow us to better serve more youth in our communities.”

drivING results At Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School, we love what we do and aim to be great at it. That’s where data comes in. For every program, evaluation results are compiled and analyzed to continuously improve programs for our youth and provide evidence of effectiveness, as well as growth areas, to our stakeholders. Director of Evaluation Joe Luesse explained, “Evaluation and data use at Harlem RBI and DREAM highlight our commitment to learning— we believe that reflecting on, learning from, and actively using program data leads to better decisions, stronger evidence for what works, and increased commitment and accountability to the youth and families that we serve.”

It’s not over ‘til it’s over. The baseball season lasts eight months. That’s a long time! Remember there will be ups and downs— it’s only natural. But if you set high targets, and discipline yourself to stick with them throughout the season, you will accomplish your goals. Brick by brick Five years ago, we set our sights on building a permanent home for DREAM Charter School and headquarters for Harlem RBI. Through persistence and dedication, and in partnership with the City of New York, Civic Builders and Jonathan Rose Companies, the East Harlem Center for Living and Learning broke ground in February of 2013. The new building will house under one roof Harlem RBI’s new offices, DREAM Charter School, and 90 units of affordable housing. The project also includes the renovation of Blake Hobbs Public Park. By 2014, the community will begin to see masonry of the residential tower. And by 2015, scholars will enter their new state-of-the-art DREAM Charter School. Reflecting the hard work and vision of many collaborators, this building represents Harlem RBI’s long-term commitment to serving East Harlem’s youth and families.

12 attitude influences performance. Every thought you have affects you and your teammates—either positively or negatively. There is no neutral. Expanding our reach With our 2012 – 2016 Strategic Plan as a roadmap, Harlem RBI is on track for national expansion. One key milestone met in 2013 is our local replication in the South Bronx. REAL Kids-South Bronx represents the first time in Harlem RBI history that the organization provided services beyond the borders of East Harlem. With full enrollment in both REAL Kids Summer and After-School programs, the early returns are promising: “Every morning it was a struggle to get my son out of bed and dressed. After one summer with REAL Kids-South Bronx, he is awake and ready for me to take him to school. There has been a shift. He is excited to be in school now.” — Erika Llopiz, P.S. 18 Parent
“There weren’t many summer opportunities for youth in the South Bronx before REAL Kids. And let me tell you, I had two students participate in the summer program and improve two reading levels. Winning is a habit. You don’t build success by doing the right things some of the time. You do them all of the time. It takes a TEAM Nicole Foster, whose father grew up in Harlem, keeps her job as an All-Star Committee member close to heart. Her involvement with Harlem RBI is much more than writing a check— “It’s a partnership,” said Nicole. “I’m able to lend my talents to support Harlem RBI’s long-term goal of affecting systemic change.” While cheering seniors at graduation, or donating her time to send care packages to Legends in college, Nicole recognizes Harlem RBI’s ability to deftly manage operational growth while staying true to the organizational mission. “Everyone on staff—whether they work in programs or not— knows individual kids and their families,” said Nicole. “And they don’t just know their names, they know their stories.”

The Royal Treatment A visit from His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales to the Field of Dreams in the spring of 2013 had all of New York City buzzing. Harlem RBI senior Jasmine couldn’t believe she was meeting royalty: “I was ecstatic, but I tried to keep my cool.” Recognizing Harlem RBI’s unwavering commitment to youth, The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry initiated a partnership with Harlem RBI. The American Friends of The Royal Foundation launched Project Coach, which provides coaching opportunities for youth from age 13 through college graduation. Jasmine was immensely proud to demonstrate her skills when she got to coach His Royal Highness on baseball fundamentals. Prince Harry proved to be a quick study—with New York Yankee and Harlem RBI Board Member Mark Teixeira on the pitching mound, Prince Harry knocked the cover off the ball.
