EAST HARLEM IS A VIBRANT AND DIVERSE COMMUNITY.

BUT EAST HARLEM CHILDREN AND FAMILIES FACE REAL OBSTACLES TO REALIZING THEIR DREAMS. POVERTY • 28% of East Harlem households live below the poverty line • 34% of East Harlem residents receive public assistance or food stamps • 17% of East Harlem residents are unemployed

FAILING SCHOOLS • 58% of East Harlem youth do not finish high school • 57% of East Harlem elementary school students meet the State and City Reading Standards • 10% of East Harlem adults have a college degree

POOR HEALTH • East Harlem’s rates of childhood obesity, asthma hospitalization and diabetes are among the highest in New York City • 13% of births in East Harlem are to teenage mothers • East Harlem has the second highest rate of substantiated abuse and neglect cases in New York City

HARLEM RBI HAS BEEN HELPING EAST HARLEM KIDS BEAT THE ODDS FOR 20 YEARS. From humble beginnings in 1991, Harlem RBI has grown from a seasonal recreation program into a nationally recognized youth development and education organization serving more than 1,000 youth, ages 5–22, each year. With the founding of its DREAM Charter School in 2008 and the continuous expansion of its summer and after-school programs, Harlem RBI is set to grow by more than 50% over the next five years. Throughout its 20-year history, Harlem RBI has achieved great success in its efforts to end generational poverty by helping youth avoid the risks—gang membership, substance abuse, teen pregnancy—that trap so many of their peers.

AT HARLEM RBI:

99%

OF YOUTH AVOID TEEN PARENTHOOD.

97%

OF YOUTH Graduate from high school.

93%

OF SENIORS ARE ACCEPTED INTO COLLEGE.

Make a Gift and Help Expand Our Impact.

LEVEL THE FIELD BUILD THE FUTURE Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School launched the $20 million Level the Field, Build the Future capital campaign to ensure that every family in East Harlem has the educational, health and economic resources they need to live happy, self-sufficient lives. More than a building, this new “home base for Harlem RBI and DREAM will be a beacon of hope for East Harlem and a reminder of what a community can achieve when it works together. The New York City Department of Education has made a $32.5 million gift through its Charter Facilities Matching Grant Program. This means that every $1 you give will be matched by $2 from the City. Make your gift today and help expand our impact in East Harlem for years to come.

WHY BUILD? WHY NOW? Harlem RBI and DREAM are changing more lives and growing faster than ever, but with a start-up school that is adding 50 students each year and after-school programs that have expanded to serve more than 1,000 children, Harlem RBI’s ability to reach more youth is literally limited by the space available. This new facility will create a one-stop resource for East Harlem children and families so that any resident who wants to build a better life has an opportunity and a place to do so.

COMMUNITY SPACE Located at East 104th Street and Second Avenue, the building will include:

• 5,000sf of program space and a home office for Harlem RBI • A 60,000sf school to serve as the permanent home of DREAM Charter School • 90,000sf of low income housing for East Harlem families • A 25,000sf public park where all of East Harlem can Play, Learn and Grow

JOIN THE TEAM AND BUILD THE FUTURE.

Mark Teixeira, Co-Chair and million-dollar supporter of the Level the Field, Build the Future capital campaign.

When I discovered Harlem RBI, I felt compelled to step up to the plate to join the team. As a member of the Board of Directors, I have seen firsthand how Harlem RBI and DREAM have empowered young people and their families to recognize their potential and realize their dreams. The building of a home for Harlem RBI and DREAM is a critical next step in providing an even greater opportunity in East Harlem. The total cost of this project is $90 million. The New York City Department of Education has committed $32.5 million toward the project through its Charter Facilities Matching Grant Program and Harlem RBI now needs to raise $20 million. This project promises to close the educational achievement gap, revitalize the community and stimulate the economy for generations to come. If you care about any of these issues, I urge you to make a donation and join the team that is providing a brighter future for our community, our city and our nation. Please join me in helping to make this dream a reality. Visit www.harlemrbi.org or call 212.722.7105 today.
