Why First Aid for Mental Health? As we all know, the emotional health and wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health and wellbeing. However in the UK, some 10 percent of children and young people (aged 5-16) have a clinically diagnosable mental health problem, yet 70 percent of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early stage1. Mental health illnesses are a leading cause of health-related disabilities in children and young people, and can have long-lasting adverse effects on physical health, educational achievement, social relationships and employment prospects2.
Additionally, a recent survey by Leeds Beckett University highlighted that some three quarters of teachers feel that their own poor psychological and emotional condition (caused by excessive workloads, poor work-life balance and financial pressures facing schools) is also having a detrimental impact on pupils’ progress3. More generally, in the UK over half a million workers suffer from mental-health related conditions, and circa 12.5 million working days were lost in 2016/17 as a result4.

Why now? In early 2018, following a review of children and young people’s mental health services, the Care Quality Commission reported that Ofsted should “strengthen its assessment of schools and academies to consider how effectively they respond to pupils’ mental health needs”. The CQC said that inspectors should also take into account the impact that “school life and the curriculum” have on pupils’ mental health when it develops its new inspection framework, which is due to be in place from September 20191. The current School Inspection Handbook also states that schools rated ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ should have a “culture [that] promotes all aspects of pupils’ welfare” and

that pupils should “enjoy learning about how to stay healthy and about emotional and mental health, [and] safe and positive relationships…2” Furthermore, under government proposals to reform relationship and sex education classes, health resiliance will be a compulsory part of the national curriculum for primary and secondary pupils from autumn 20203.
