In order to come to terms with the European Market we had to develop a code to determine which groups and which categories were important for which companies. Below you will find a classification table wherein you can find the different classes and the different types of retail chains. This classification is used as a manner of recognition to help you better select a target group.

Argos Executive Summary Argos is the largest jewellery retailer by volume in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Until 2006 it was part of the GUS plc group. It is now the largest business in the Home Retail Group (LSE: HOME) which also owns the Homebase DIY chain. Argos sells via 700 stores, a printed catalog and an on-line store, It sold £260m of jewellery in 2008, total UK jewellery sales were £3.4bn. The jewellery and watch range is low end with most items under £200. There is a limited range of diamond jewellery and Argos also offers cubic zirconia and diamonite collections. Most of the jewellery is 9ct or 18ct gold. Watchbrands sold include Accurist, Sekonda, Casio and Timex. It carries a collection of ‘body jewellery’ for navels, noses and toes, and also retails low priced jewellery boxes and gem cleaning products. Argos offers ‘theft, loss and repair’ insurance for the jewellery and watches it sells. Although this is fairly expensive at approximately 10% of the purchase price for a two year policy. The Argos website is one of the leaders in its field and offers home delivery.

Beaverbrooks Executive Summary Beaverbrooks is a family owned jeweler whose first store opened in Belfast, in 1919. The group now operates 61 stores employing over 700 people. It is the UK’s tenth largest jewellery retail chain. Beaverbrooks offers a full range of jewellery and watches. positioned towards the middle of the market. It sells non-branded products as well as collections from D&G, Emporio Armani, Gucci and Comete. Watches are priced between £100 and £5,000 with a few items from Ebel, Breitling and Omega in excess of £7,500. It offers a collection for children priced from £25 to £135. A men’s jewellery collection consists primarily of wedding rings priced at up to £3,500 but also includes a limited selection of cufflinks and bracelets. Beaverbrooks also markets ‘Crisscut’ cut (by Lili Diamonds Ltd) diamond jewellery in a range of solitaire and three-stone rings, earrings and necklaces priced up to £6,250. The Beaverbrooks website is clear, informative and user friendly. It also offers an online registry of valuables.
