T

he idyllic amalgamation of small town charm and big city allure, Greensboro is indeed amazing year round; yet there’s something about summer that brings out our best. Even with much to keep the mind, body and spirit active season after season, it’s those warm days and cooler comfortable nights when Greensboro truly shines; and shine it does. Activities abound for everyone, and whether your proclivities lean towards more relaxing interests like long walks, antique shopping or fine dining (al fresco of course) or more adventurous pursuits such as splashing in a wave pool, swaying among the trees or petting Stingrays, Greensboro offers up more than enough to make everyone’s summer special. We’ve put together a small sampling of what we consider to be great ways to spend a summer here. With so much to do, there’s no better way than to take the leap and splash into your summer! Jasmine Nehilla Staff Writer a secret, you keep said secret. It’s about showing up. Never breaking a promise. And letting your word be infallible. Don’t dumb yourself down for anyone, anything, or any reason...ever. Give credit, compliments, and practice civility. Encourage instead of complain. Understand and consider someone’s situation before spewing out congested frustrations or piercing words. But my favorite response was, “being a good person means...I can get all philoImage courtesy of Heather Lashun sophical on you and say, it’s enriching Facebook.com/pages/Heather-LaShun-Photography/257952385411 oneself because the better off you are as an individual the better off the world is around you. Let’s express our gratitude to have it to give.” the season by cannonballing into pools, breaking I’m not really sure how many good deeds or the magnitude of one’s helpful actions deems one a good person—there isn’t a measuring tool or guide book to judge by. bread with friends, family and even randos (my newest synonym for strangers). We’ll catch fireflies, make something homemade, cackle and guffaw, and make new friends. Let’s go somewhere...let’s celebrate the journey! I swear summer days and nights are medicinal. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll figure out how to bottle up some summer and put it on reserve for the winter.

With some sun kisses, splashes of water, and a frosty refreshing beverage, the hazy lazy ease of summer is the perfect time to focus on cultivating your personal growth! When in doubt, think about that difficult person. You know the one who is so rude and so negative they make your hair stand on end, steam blow from your ears and explicative symbols pour out of your mouth. They have shown you the person you never wish to be.

being a good person means... While we work out the kinks of season bottling, I’ve been questioning, what does it mean to be a good person? What does being a good person entail? I’ve asked this question on social media. I’ve asked this question at work, and I’ve received a multitude of answers: It means detaching yourself from social media and engaging in genuine conversation. Call someone up and check on them. Meet up with a friend, exchange energies, or hug someone’s neck. When trusted with the immense responsibility of keeping

My personal aim is to reflect those I admire for their ceaseless generosity, their non-discriminatory open hearts and arms, and their uncanny ability to consider everyone’s feelings, friend or foe. Now let that marinate like whatever tasty is about to hit the grill.

t would be easy to quote from his biography, allowing facts such as his numerous international awards and accolades to speak for themselves. Equally simple would be to explain that, while widely considered one of the most challenging media with which to paint, he has mastered the art of watercolor, having taken it to levels unknown. Equally telling, although more difficult to articulate would be why his paintings evoke such emotional responses, having touched so many people; moving some of them to tears. However, one look at the works of master watercolorist, Guan Weixing and all other narratives become banal. Mr. Guan has taken a painting media which many of the uninitiated have routinely underappreciated or dismissed and elevated it to masterpiece status. What this brilliant artist does with watercolor is truly awe-inspiring. Even after watching his demonstration videos on YouTube, viewers are often left mesmerized by the final product. And, while one could conceivably look him up online and see pictures of many of his works, there is only ONE way to truly view the watercolors of Guan Weixing; and that, of course, is in person. Luckily for us, Greensboro’s own Ambleside Gallery has been selected as the only U.S. representative of Mr. Guan and the only place in the country to currently have an exhibition featuring many of his classic pieces in addition to his newer works. I know our mantra here at We Are Greensboro is “keep it Local”. However, with no disrespect to the scores of great local artists and galleries here, many of whom I adore and consider friends, rarely have I been as captivated and utterly awestruck by a painting as I have with some of Guan Weixing’s works. In other words, this is one show that CANNOT BE MISSED! Guan Weixing does not travel from his home country of China

often, in fact he hasn’t visited America since 2007 when he had exhibitions in New York, Houston and right here in Greensboro at Ambleside. For anyone who appreciates art, to miss this rare opportunity would be a shame. So, lose the excuses to stay at home and drop any preconceived notions of what you think watercolor paintings look like. Visit Ambleside Gallery, say hello to Mr. Guan and witness what a true master watercolorist can create. •

verything a vibrant downtown should be, Greensboro is alive and South Elm St. is it’s pulse. And for those of you who have forgotten (or have yet to discover), the flow doesn’t stop south of the railroad tracks. South End (S. Elm St., south across the railroad tracks to Gate City Blvd.), is one of our favorite locations to shop, dine and explore. Infused among the city’s highest concentration of amazing antique shops are beautiful art galleries, furniture and home decor shops, a theatre, brewery, museum and a wide assortment of dining options. And thats only the beginning; ice skating in the winter, the GSO City Market spring, summer and autumn, and an all around fun time the First Friday of each month, all year long. In fact, the only way to experience it is to head downtown and experience ALL of it for yourself.

Greensboro Science Center Every day should hold a bit of adventure and in Greensboro there’s no better place to find adventure than the Greensboro Science Center. Offering three great attractions in one unique and exciting location, the center boasts the SciQuarium (North Carolina’s only inland aquarium with displays that include petting tanks, penguins, otters and a 90,000 gallon live tank featuring sharks and stingrays), a Museum (with, among its many exhibits, Prehistoric Passages, Herpetarium and the Extreme Weather Gallery) and the Animal Discovery Zoo (a huge assortment of animals ranging from Tigers and Apes to Snakes and Meerkats). As if that wasn’t enough, the center recently opened Skywild, an exhibit featuring 60 unique, animal-inspired challenges that

First Fridays There is always something new and different to discover on First Fridays. Presented as a “self-guided walking tour” downtown Greensboro comes alive the first Friday of each month. Although the event occurs all twelve months, it is in the summer with its longer days and comfortable nights when action really picks up. The smells of the various cuisine that downtown offers fills the air accompanied by music played both in front of and inside many of downtowns wonderful shops and galleries, most of which stay open those nights until 9pm. The perfect place for residents and visitors alike to discover what downtown has to offer, First Friday is a monthly must!

East West BBQ Fest Nothing says summer like something hot off the grill, and you may even find a bit of grilled food here. But this is the East West BBQ Fest and this is all about BARBEQUE. For those unawares, there is a difference. Grilling is the act of cooking your meat or veggies over a high, “direct” heat source and if done right, results in delicious food. Barbeque, on the other hand, is the slow, methodical process of cooking over “indirect” heat at lower temperatures and for longer periods (often 4-6 hours or more), resulting in tender, succulent... well you get the message. With award winning names like Florida Skin and Bones, Carolina Rib King, Pigfoot, and local favorite Poor Piggy’s among the legendary teams in attendance, this year’s event promises to be one of the tastiest in the BBQ Fest’s four year history. Open this summer from August 28th -30th, the food here is definitely the star and includes ribs, chicken, pulled pork, brisket and more, all seasoned and barbequed (or grilled) to perfection. Still, with live music and plenty of vendors, the BBQ Fest will keep you occupied all day. So bring your appetites, this is the real deal and not to be missed. For additional information, please visit the BBQ Fest online at www.eastwestbbqfest.com State Street With its charming assortment of boutiques, multiple dining options and assorted salons and services, this “Main Street” of the Mcadoo Heights area of Greensboro oozes small town charm and appeal. Greensboro City Parks

Our city’s department of Parks and Recreation provides veritable (and quite literal) playgrounds year round, but summer is when truly prime time. For their year-round practicality and versatility, indoor pools such as those at the Aquatic Center and the Smith Senior Center are great places to get involved in health and competition based programs such as swim teams, lessons and aquatic exercise. However, for the sheer joy of summer, nothing beats frolicking in a community pool. With four outdoor pools and two “spraygrounds” to afford visitors

city parks have the room to stretch out under a tree and read that book you’ve yet to open... the means to cool off, a much needed splash is never far away. Yet the pools, as great as they are, are only the beginning of what GSO P&R has to offer. Multiple athletic programs that run the gamut from baseball, basketball and soccer to boxing, golf and tennis often include the facilities and staff to make instruction available to visitors of all ages and skill levels. Looking for something a little less…sweaty? City parks have the room to stretch out under a tree and read that book you’ve yet to open, take a relaxing stroll along one of the many trails, cook out with family and friends, or even fly a kite. Parks and Recreation also oversees the city’s concerts and theatrical performances in addition to the city’s art galleries, all of which offer rotating performances and exhibition schedules. Needless to say, the list of potential activities for residents and visitors alike is quite vast, but don’t become overwhelmed. For more information including event and facility schedules and to learn more about out how Greensboro Parks and Recreation can make your whole year fun, visit them online at www. greensboro-nc.gov (living - parks and recreation)

Oh yes, there certainly is something special about summer. And as you can see when it comes to warm weather fun in Greensboro the options are many while the excuses are…well actually the excuses are nonexistent; especially when considering that even by midSeptember there are still plenty of warm days ahead. Outdoor, indoor, sunshine or rain, splash, climb, run, walk or simply kick back, relax and watch the world go by; there is more than enough to keep everyone happily engaged all summer and beyond. So, get up, get out, enjoy life and the beautiful weather… It’ll be cold again one day and you’ll wish for days like these. •

There are many additional events such as outdoor concerts, films and block parties throughout the city, all summer long. For more summer fun, find us on Facebook at facebook. com/wearegreensboro, or visit the event calendars of the following Greensboro based sites: exploregreensboro.com yesweekly.com piedmontparent.com visitgreensboronc.com greensboro.com Likewise, if you know of an event that others will be interested in, post it to our Facebook or Instagram pages so that others may enjoy it as well... Above all else, have a safe, WONDERFUL summer!
