Cotton Cotton is a type of owering plant that belongs to the mallow family. C u l t i v a t i o n o f c ot to n s ta r te d approximately 7000 years ago in Mexico and in India and Pakistan. Out of roughly 43 species of cotton, only four are cultivated on a large scale. Cotton grows in tropical and subtropical parts of Asia, Africa, Australia and America. People cultivate cotton because of the seed that represent valuable source of ďŹ bers and oil. Each year, around 25 million tons of cotton are produced in the 70 countries around the world.

Bollworm & Jassid The cotton jassid is a serious sucking pest of cotton. The cotton jassid sucks sap from the underside of leaves and leaf buds. When jassids are abundant, cotton growth is stunted, the leaves turn downwards and heavy fruit loss may occur on pre owering plants The cotton bollworm, corn earworm, or Old World bollworm is a moth, the larvae of which feed on a wide range of plants, including many important cultivated crops. It is a major pest in cotton and one of the most polyphagous and cosmopolitan pest species.

Aphid Aphids are soft bodied insects and 1.5 to 2 mm in length. Adults are large sized, black with pear-shaped body and conspicuous cornicles, winged or wingless. During preowering stage both nymphs and adults suck the cell sap from shoot apices, peduncles, leaves and stem, secrete a honey dew like secretion on upper surface of the leaves and plant parts forming a black sooty mold which hinders photosynthetic activity resulting in stunted growth. About Rice 7

Rice is one of the most cultivated grains in the world. Hundreds of millions tons of rice are produced each year. New varieties of rice can tolerate drought, oods and salty terrains. Bacterial and fungal diseases and insects are major threats for the successful harvest. Rice can be white, yellow, golden, brown, purple, red or black in color. All varieties of rice are divided in three major categories based on the size of grain: long, medium and short. Medium and short types are sticky due to high content of starch. Rice is staple food in most countries in the world. 90% of global rice is produced and consumed in Asia.

Rice Pest

Stem Borer

Leaf Folder

Plant Hopper

Green Leaf Hopper

Stem borer is a pest of deepwater rice. It is found in aquatic environments where t h e re i s c o n t i n u o u s flooding.

Leaf folders occur in allrice environments and are more abundant during the rainy seasons. They are commonly found in shady areas and a re a s w h e re r i c e i s heavily fertilized.

The feeding damage caused by plant hoppers results in the yellowing of the plants. At high population density, hopper burn or complete drying of the plants is observed.

Green leafhoppers are important pests. They are vectors of viral diseases such as tungro, yellow dwarf, yellow-orange leaf, transitory yellowing, and dwarf.

Fa r m e r s l o s e a n estimated average of 37% of their rice crop to pests and diseases every year. In addition to good crop management, timely and accurate diagnosis can significantly reduce losses. More than 100 species of i n s e c t s a r e considered pests in rice production systems globally, but only about 20 species cause s i g n i fi c a n t economic damage
