RICE Rice is the leading food crops in the world. It provides 21% of global human per capita energy and 15% of per capita protein. Although rice protein ranks high in nutritional quality among cereals, protein content is modest. Rice also provides minerals, vitamins, and ber, although all constituents except carbohydrates are reduced by milling. Rice is the most important food crop of the developing world and the staple food of more than half of the world's population. Rich in nutrients and vitamins and minerals, it an excellent source of complex carbohydrates. Nine out of every ten people in the world who eat rice are Asian.

Target Pests Coleopteran, (order Coleoptera), any member of the insect order Coleoptera, consisting of the beetles and weevils. It is the largest order of insects, representing about 40 percent of the known insect species. Among the over 360,000 species of Coleoptera are many of the largest and most conspicuous insects, some of which also have brilliant metallic colours, showy patterns, or striking form. Beetles can usually be recognized by their two pairs of wings; the front pair is modi ed into horny covers (elytra) that hide the rear pair and most of the abdomen and usually meet down the back in a straight line. Coleoptera occur in nearly all climates. They may be divided into four groups: the rst three, the Archostemata, the Adephaga, and the Myxophaga, contain relatively few families; the majority of beetles are placed in the fourth group, the Polyphaga.

Diptera

The Diptera, commonly called true ies or two-winged ies, are a group of familiar insects that includes mosquitoes, black ies, midges, fruit ies, and house ies. The Diptera are among the most diverse insect orders, with approximately 150,000 described species. These insects are diverse not only in species richness but also in their structural variety, ecological habits, and economic importance.

Target Pests The order Homoptera consists of a diverse assemblage of insects that are dif cult to characterize, because super cially they are so different in general appearance. They are closely related to Hemiptera, and sometimes treated as members of that order. The mouthparts of Homoptera are the piercing-sucking type, but instead of arising at the front of the head as in the Hemiptera, they arise basally, at the back of the head. Sometimes, the mouthparts appear to originate between the base of the front pair of legs. Normally, they have four wings of relatively uniform texture throughout, though in some the front wings are slightly thickened. When at rest, the wings are usually held angled or roof-like over the body, not at over the back as is typically found in Hemiptera. The antennae may be short or bristle-like, or long and thread-like. Metamorphosis is incomplete, with the egg, nymphal, and adult stages present.

Lepidoptera

Lepidopteran any of about 180,000 species of butter ies, moths, and skippers. This order of insects is second in size only to Coleoptera, the beetles. Because of their day- ying habits and bright colours, the butter ies are more familiar than the chie y night- ying and dull-coloured moths, but the latter are far more varied and abundant. The skippers are a worldwide group intermediate between butter ies and moths. With the exception of a few moths, all adult lepidopterans have two pairs of wings. The name Lepidoptera is derived from the Greek, meaning “scaly winged, and refers to the characteristic covering of microscopic dustlike scales on the wings.
