TARGET PEST Red, Pink or Purple Mite

SEAGATE

Tea plant is subjected to the attack of several species of mites. Among them Oligonychus coffeae the red spider mite (RSM), is a major pest of tea in most teaproducing states. During Spider mite’s infestation, yellowish spots appear along the midrib of tea leaves and occasionally on petioles. Continued mite feeding causes the entire leaf to become bronzed, necrotic and often to fall from the plant.

Purple Mite Older leaves are preferred. These mites occur on both surfaces of the leaf. The leaves attacked have a dull matt appearance and a purplish-bronze discolouration. Pink Mite Young leaves are preferred. Mostly found on the under surface of the leaf, but found on the upper surface as well. Petioles and tender stems are also attacked. The affected leaves become pale in colour and curl upwards. The veins and margins show a pinkish discolouration.

The pest problem caused by Eriophyid mite, Aceria gurrerronis on coconut has reached alarming proportions threatening the very survival of the coconut industry in South India. In India, the pest was ďŹ rst reported in later part of 1997 from Ernakulam district of Kerala.

The mites are very minute in size and are not visible by naked eye. The size of this measures to 200-250 microns in length and 20-30 microns in width. The life cycle of this mite is completed in 10-12 days. It remains underneath the periyanth (cap) and cause injury by feeding on the soft paranchymatic tissues. Though the mites are microscopic their damage is enormous and hundreds of mites could be seen in each infested button and tender nut.
