F

or its relatively modest size, the city of Nottingham boasts an unusually high number of great independent stores, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. And it’s this unique phenomenon that gives Nottingham the edge over its rivals, according to the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID) – whose remit is to help make the city the number one destination for visitors in the East Midlands region and beyond. As BID director Geoff Williams, owner of the highly successful independent gift shop The Tokenhouse, Bridlesmith Gate, observes, customers get a much more rewarding experience when they avoid the big chains and try the alternative. He explains: “You get a much more individual experience with independents, with local proprietors who know the area and know the people. The difference is clear for customers – they know they’re experiencing something they’re not necessarily familiar with. It’s a much more inventive experience. “We do have a disproportionate amount of independents in Nottingham, many more than most cities this size. It’s so important for us to have this seabed of independent businesses. And of course, some of them will also grow into much bigger concerns. “Paul Smith was just a little independent

PLUS shop when I first knew it, and now look at it. The Independent sector is an important proving ground for new ideas.” Geoff believes the public need to be encouraged to give our independents their support for a more innovative experience. He explains: “Being shown new ideas is very important, otherwise many innovations never see the light of day. It’s all about the shock of the new! “And don’t forget, the money spent with an independent stays locally. For instance, if I need an electrician at my shop, I’ll use someone I know in the city. A big chain will probably have its own contractor that could be from anywhere in the country. With independents, everything stays local – what goes around, comes around.” And, crucially, an independent store or restaurant is much more in tune with its

customer’s needs than a major multiple. “As independents, we’re nearer to the customer,” Geoff says. “It’s much easier for my staff to tell me what customers are saying. The chain of communication is so much shorter, so we can react much more quickly. “We can also buy from much smaller companies and take more risks. If you imagine, someone comes up with a great new product and goes to a big name store to try and sell it, they’re going to find it difficult to convince that store to stock it without having tried it out first. It’s different with independents. “If someone is at an experimental stage of developing a range, we can try it. That’s what makes shopping at an independent more engaging. The public will see so many more new and interesting ideas.”

fter being named top Independent Business of the Year in Nottingham not once but twice, we talked to Stephen L Holland, partner/manager at comic and graphic novels store, Page 45, about his phenomenal success story.

Stephen L Holland thought winning the Nottingham BID’s independent of the year award during its inaugural year in 2012 was “blinding.” To triumph for a second time in 2013 was, he thought, impossible. And yet, that’s exactly what happened – so how exactly did his colourful and quirky comics and graphic novels store Page 45 manage such an amazing feat? “The honest answer is that you would have to ask the judges,” Stephen says, modestly. “But I believe they singled out our oneon-one customer service, our community building, our product knowledge, professionalism, passion, website and social media activity on Twitter - where our customers are such huge activists - plus our approachability and ambition. I think they liked that we care.” This caring approach to business has seen Stephen take part in numerous talks and

promotional events all over the country where he shares his passion for the graphic novel form. Says Stephen: “We will seize any and every opportunity which comes our way to widen the comic’s appeal.”

Stephen describes his weekly routine at the shop as “thrilling” with new releases every week. He adds: “For us all it’s like Christmas all over again!

He is confident that the general public know the difference when it comes to using an independent store in terms of the knowledge, care, compassion and personal service they receive.

“Every new day represents a new opportunity. Just the other day a highprofile art couple from California came and declared us the best comic shop that they had ever beheld.

“People love to invest emotionally,” he says. “Readers want to know that where they shop makes a difference. They like to think ‘I have supported this independent retailer.’

“At that point, it’s very difficult not to do a little dance right in front of them.”

“Page 45 wouldn’t even be here without that sort of loyalty, Our people become ambassadors for us. Compared to a chain store, we can offer knowledge, kindness and interactivity. You won’t see a big national store or online retailer helping you out with your student dissertation. I have helped hundreds of students on the shop floor and via email.”

Proud of being a store in the heart of Nottingham city centre, Page 45 is due to celebrate its 20th anniversary in October and will be marking the occasion by attending a huge open air comics festival in the Lake District – where they will be playing host to favourite creators and hosting a signing with the great American exponent Scott McCloud.

The Nottingham BID is running the competition again in 2014. The public get the chance to vote for their favourite independent and then a panel of judges visit the top ten to pick the overall winner. The panel rates businesses on various criteria including staff friendliness and knowledge, customer service, products, individuality, marketing and overall customer experience. The venue with the highest overall score will be named as the winner with the announcement being made on 4th July our ‘Nottingham Independents Day’.

an assistant at Dillons bookstore and in various pubs, clubs and cafes – as well as for a chain of comic shops alongside his original business partner Mark Simpson, who sadly died in 2005. Stephen is now looking forward to a summer of great new titles, and will continue giving customers unrivalled attention and care. He explains: “Just recently, a customer came in with his missus and five-year-old daughter asking for recommendations. So I spent a quarter of an hour taking the young lady and her parents through all sorts of magical, visual adventures. “In the end, she chose some of Jill Thompson’s beautiful books. As they were paying at the counter, the daughter asked her parents, ‘are we in a dream?’ “‘We’re in a comic shop,’ the mother replied. ‘So yes, we are!’ My heart just melted.” @ Page 45, 9 Market Street, Nottingham Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm. he second major competition run by the Nottingham BID to find the city’s favourite independent business gave a fascinating insight into modern shopping and leisure habits.

The first stage involved a public vote, with the top ten then visited by a panel of judges which comprised the publisher and editor of the Nottingham Post – Steve Hollingsworth and Mike Sassi; Roger Cutsforth, managing director of Capital FM, Jennifer Spencer, chief executive of Experience Nottinghamshire, Lynn Oxborrow of Nottingham Trent

Now after years of hard work, the dream is a reality. Lucy believes her role is to make customers feel happy, pampered and cared for – with a range of ultra-indulgent treatments for both women and men. Products used include Elemis, Aromatherapy Associates, St Tropez, Jessica and Bare Minerals. Speaking about the honour of winning a highly-commended award, Lucy said: “I was over the moon and also really proud. My husband and I are passionate about what we do and it is lovely for the business to be recognised in this way. We were very touched by our loyal customers who helped us achieve this and delighted too that the judges rated us so highly.”

Owner, Lucy Goodwin had long dreamed of opening her own beauty business complete with luxurious treatments, decadent

University and Nottingham City Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Jobs and Growth.

The Cheese Shop, 6 Flying Horse Walk: The second highly-commended award in the independents competition was presented to The Cheese Shop – a unique family run delicatessen founded nearly two decades ago to offer customers the best possible choice of cheeses from around the world.

The panel had to rate each business on staff friendliness, knowledge, customer service, products, individuality, marketing and surroundings. The venue with the highest overall score was named as the winner.

There are now more than 200 British cheeses made from a variety of milks including cow, sheep, goat and buffalo – together with some local favourites like “King of cheeses” Stilton, sourced from nearby Colston Basset Dairy and Cropwell Bishop Creameries. In addition, there’s a great choice of continental favourites, with more than 100 suppliers.

Page 45, 9 Market Street: The winner for the second year running, this graphic novel specialist attracts a passionate and loyal customer base. Geoff Williams, director of the Nottingham BID said: “It’s a great business that Nottingham should be proud of. It has a local, regional, national and international reputation and scored highly in all the categories according to our judges.” See our feature on page three.

The Cheese Shop, which was featured in celebrity chef Rick Stein’s Food Heroes campaign in the early 2000s, also stocks a range of other products, including condiments, pork pies, artisan biscuits and fresh olives.

Cookie Shake, 14 Upper Parliament Street: This fun and unusual cafe specialises in delicious milkshakes, with more than 200 varieties including Kit Kat, Ferrero Rocher, Oreo, After 8, Werthers Original and Extra Strong Mint ice cream shakes.

“We are really pleased that we have been highly-commended by the judges in the competition,” said Webb Freckingham of the Cheese Shop. “It’s fantastic that Nottingham’s independents are being supported and recognised – they are really important to the city. We are so happy that our customers voted for us – our business is all about them – and it’s great that the judges liked what we do too.”

The venue opened in 2006 and hasn’t looked back since, working hard to create a really relaxed environment where customers can indulge themselves with delicious treats in a comfortable setting – complete with soft sofas. There’s also a range of books and board games to help visitors while away their time.

Fashion fans in Nottingham are luckier than most thanks to our great range of independent shops – with much more in store than the run-of-the-mill seasonal fare available in bigger chains.

Here’s our guide to three distinct styles you’ll find in the city’s independent sector...

HIGH END STYLE For a special occasion or if you’re simply the sort of person who demands quality every day, try one of the very special high end independent stores in the city centre:

VINTAGE It’s all about taking the best styles, colours and looks from days gone by and giving them a new lease of life for today. Nottingham’s unbeatable choice of vintage and retro stockists include:

QUIRKY

Stick and Ribbon, 3 Flying Horse Walk – exclusive designs for modern women, with brands including Almost Famous, Ingenue and Swedish Hasbeens. Staff are all trained stylists who can offer advice and consultations and there are also regular fashion shows and other events in the bright and welcoming store.

For that indefinable style or a piece that doesn’t follow any particular trend, try one of Nottingham’s wonderfully quirky stores, which almost defy categorisation: Void Clothing, 38-40 Carlton Street – this legendary store has been selling alternative clothing, jewellery, accessories, make-up, footwear and band merchandise since 1982, and is a haven for some of the country’s most glamorous Goths. With a real sense of fun and some brilliant gift ideas, you’ll be inspired and entertained in equal measures.

Tutu Urban Boutique, 1 The Exchange – featuring a comprehensive range of brands for smart women, including Georgio Armani, Grundahl, Transit, Humanoid and Vintage by Fe, this upmarket boutique is a haven for fashionistas with a confident and assured sense of style. Wild Clothing Wild Clothing, 4-6 Broad Street – a hit particularly with the city’s enormous student population, you never know what you will find inside this appealing and well thought out store. Look out for upcycled items and rare pieces from as far back as the 1940s – all sold alongside street clothing and accessories for men and women.

Ice Nine, 9-13 Goose Gate – when you really want to stand out from the crowd, try this beloved Nottingham shop with its brilliant choice of alternative clothing and eye-catching body and fashion jewellery. If you’re into burlesque, this is also the place to go for one-off designs and inspiration. No wonder it’s been a successful business since the 1970s.

Jolie Lingerie, 14 Flying Horse Walk – the place to go for luxurious lingerie, hosiery and swimwear, you’ll find a range of top brands here including Marie Jo, Transparenze and Freya, with beautiful camisoles, maternity options as well as clever shapewear. Staff are on hand for expert advice on fitting or any other questions you might have.

Braderie, 19-21 Pelham Street – it’s the store that’s always looking for new ways to work with old materials, such as its recent focus on how to bring Levi’s denim up to date. Great for men’s cardigans, jackets and scarves – or how about a great pair of women’s dungarees for the summer?

Born Ambitious, 38 Pelham Street – offering a real alternative for men who want to ditch boring jumpers, shirts and jeans, this top store has inspirational ideas from some of the world’s leading designer brands. How about reclaiming flowers from its feminine focus and embracing the new Hawaiian look in the store this spring summer? Alo-ha Nottingham!

Baklash, Market Street – a major name in vintage and second hand clothing since 1982 and now happily spread over two floors in what used to be known as Selectadisc, this is the place to go for all types of authentic gear. Whether you’d like an elegant coat or evening dress or a fun fifties jacket or psychedelic suit, you’ll find it in this large and appealing venue. Tutu Urban Boutique 11

‘Oldies’ are part of what makes Nottingham great

I

f you think independent stores simply don’t have the staying power of bigger, national chains, you only have to look at some of the longestestablished names in Nottingham’s retail sector to see how wrong you are. Andersons of Nottingham

These great, truly unique Nottingham brands are part of what makes the city so appealing, and their continued success even through some of the most difficult economic conditions of recent times is testament to the hard work and dedication of dedicated retailers who know local people and understand what makes them tick. Leading florists Andersons of Nottingham, 10 King Street, have been perfecting their winning way with flowers since 1972 and continue to be a trusted name for old and new customers alike. Whether it’s wedding bouquets or gifts for Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s, there is a wide choice of blooms – and the business has moved with the times with its great website and delivery service. You can also choose from a range of other gift ideas, such as balloons and wines and spirits.

The Tokenhouse

Meanwhile, The Tokenhouse, 39-41 Bridlesmith Gate, has been welcoming customers through its doors for more than 35 years, bringing brilliant giftware, children’s toys, stationery, homewares and baby goods to discerning customers from across the region.

British-themed Rule Britannia collection of books and Tea and Cake homeware items. If you love quality wines, you’ll be familiar with Weavers, 1 Castle Gate, originally established in 1844 and now run by the fifth generation of the famous Trease family. Its quirky interior hosts an unbeatable range of rare wines, spirits and liqueurs from around the world – with the best sparkling wines and champagnes as well as beers and bottled mineral water.

Their continued success even through some of the most difficult economic conditions of recent times is testament to the hard work and dedication of retailers who know local people

You’ll find expert advice if you’re looking for the perfect gift for a special occasion, and there is a great choice of cellar accessories such as decanters, cork screws and wine glasses. Also a familiar name in Nottingham since 1880, Gauntleys, 4 High Street, started out life in Long Row and moved to its current position inside the lovely surroundings of Exchange Arcade in 1962. It is recognised as one of the UK’s leading wine importers and agency houses, specialising in wines from the Rhone Valley, Alsace and Champagne.

While many big-name additions have entered the marketplace in recent times, this is a gift store that in many ways set the trend for quirky and interesting ranges – and it prides itself on trying new brands and collections long before they’re seen in other shops. Trends this year include the

There is also an excellent choice of quality spirits, including rare Japanese whisky, Armagnac and rum – and the shop runs a popular website with a blog by Chris Goodrum called “The Good Dram Show.”

H E A D O F F T H E B E AT E N T R A C K TO DISCOVER THE REAL GEMS OF NOTTINGHAM N

ottingham city centre is lucky enough to have several very distinct retail and entertainment areas, all of which offer something totally unique for visitors who have come to shop or enjoy a bite to eat. And the key factor that makes these diverse “zones” such must-do destinations is an emphasis on independents – with scores of lovely shops, cafés and other businesses you simply won’t find in any other city. So why not step away from the big shopping centres and high street chains and discover something a little different from the run-of-the mill brands you might be used to? You never know what secret gems you’ll come across if you head off the beaten track:

Maid Marian Way

Hurts Yard

Famously known as Nottingham’s “curry mile” because of its superb collection of high end Indian restaurants, this bustling thoroughfare also plays host to a number of independent stores – including several well-established interiors specialists. There are also various lively bars and evening venues, so make sure you take a stroll along the iconic street if you’re out for the evening with friends.

This historic thoroughfare, off Upper Parliament Street, has recently undergone major regeneration and is a delight if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. St James’ Street

Derby Road The stretch of road from Canning Circus running down towards Upper Parliament Street and Maid Marian Way has come to have a very special place in the hearts of local shopping enthusiasts. Nowhere in Nottingham has a better choice of independent interiors shops - with great pubs and bars thrown into the mix for good measure. Tim Foster, vice chairman of Derby Road Steering Group added: “We’re working as a community to raise the profile of what shops offer and this year, we’ll be holding Derby Road fête on July 5, celebrating these shops and businesses. It will be an event for the whole city to enjoy with entertainment for everyone.”

Take a stroll up this famous walkway, running from the Old Market Square to Maid Marian Way, for an array of brilliant pubs, bars, cafés and entertainment venues – all set inside some wonderful original Georgian buildings.

King’s Walk and

Trinity Walk Situated close to the popular Corner House and the bars and restaurants around Forman Street and Trinity Square, these pedestrianised cut-throughs play host to some much-loved specialist shops and businesses. Look out for the eyecatching “King’s Walk” sign off Upper Parliament Street.

Brown Dog Interiors

And the area continues to attract a constantly engaging mix of fashion boutiques, vintage stores and chilled out cafés – the natural haven for the city’s creative community. The business are well known for their “all in this together” attitude, and this spirit of togetherness is best illustrated by events like the popular Hockley Hustle, back this year on October 19 with lively music and creative talent celebrating the unique style and character of the area.
