A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear Friends and Families, It is with great pleasure and pride that I welcome you to the 2021-2022 performance season at Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA)! This is an exceedingly special year for OCSA as we come back together to enjoy musicals, concerts, and performances of all kinds in person once again. This season also marks OCSA’s 35th anniversary, a year full of exciting events and surprises for the entire OCSA community to celebrate as we commemorate The Year of a Million Dreams. I am so honored that I have the privilege to step into the role of President & CEO at this auspicious moment in the history of our school. Since my first day at OCSA more than 10 years ago, I have been captivated and inspired by the school: the unique and fundamentally different culture, the students and staff who are committed to a pursuit of excellence, everything about it. I continue to be awed by the transformative nature of all that we do and what that means for the students, for the staff, and for the community. The last three and a half decades have been an incredible journey. I would like to take a moment to recognize all of the individuals who have helped to make the OCSA dream a reality. I want to begin by giving a very special thank you to OCSA’s founder and my mentor, Dr. Ralph Opacic. It has been such an honor to learn from Dr. Opacic over the years. What he fostered and built at OCSA is truly unparalleled, and I am both grateful to have his continued support and humbled that I have the opportunity to carry on what he started so many years ago. I would also like to express my appreciation to our 2021-2022 corporate season sponsor, McKenna Subaru, as well as to our Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, Foundation Advisory Board, Emeritus Board, President’s Circle, Encore, and PSO members. Their continued support, leadership, and vision help to shape the lives of our students each and every day. Finally, I must acknowledge our parents, alumni, administrators, faculty and staff, members of the local community, and perhaps most importantly, our talented student artists. Our students provide the inspiration and driving force behind everything we do. I am thrilled to have you join me in celebrating 35 years of dreams at OCSA. Please enjoy this milestone performance season! All the best,

Teren Shaffer President & CEO Orange County School of the Arts

A NOTE FROM OCSA’S PRESIDENT & CEO Dear Friends, Welcome to this special evening of music, song, dance, and dreams in honor of Orange County School of the Arts’ (OCSA) 35th anniversary! I am thrilled to have you join us for tonight’s one-of-a-kind performance, which highlights the inspiring talents of students from eight of OCSA’s arts conservatories in an innovative production that reimagines classic scenes from the world of opera and the concert stage. I can think of no better way to commemorate this momentous year in the history of our incredible school! Our Symphony of Dreams concert features more than 200 student performers and crew members from the Ballet & Contemporary Dance, Ballet Folklórico Dance, Classical Voice, Commercial Dance, Creative Writing, El-Erian Family Acting, Instrumental Music, and Production & Design Conservatories. These talented young students will perform in collaboration with internationally renowned guest artists and notable OCSA alumni, including our conductor for the evening, Michael Repper (IM, ‘08), who will lead the Symphony Orchestra and Classical Voice Choirs. On behalf of the entire OCSA family, I would like to express my appreciation to Chapman University for hosting this exciting event in the beautiful Musco Center for the Arts. As you may know, this past year we lost a longtime OCSA supporter and fervent champion of the arts, Sebastian Paul Musco. I know I speak for many when I say he will be greatly missed, though his legacy will live on through the artistry that graces the stage each season here at Musco Center for the Arts and at OCSA. We send our love and warmth to his wonderful family as well as his remarkable wife, Marybelle Musco, who continues to serve as an inspiration to all by advocating for the arts through service, leadership, and philanthropy. I would also like to take this moment to extend my deepest gratitude to our Symphony of Dreams Honorary Producers, Ling and Charlie Zhang. This unique performance would not be possible without their generous support. Once again, thank you for joining us tonight in support of the next generation of world-class artist-scholars. Now please enjoy this Symphony of Dreams, as together we celebrate the promise of OCSA, the importance of the arts, and the journey all artists take to reach their highest potential. All the best,

Teren M. Shaffer President & CEO Orange County School of the Arts

A NOTE FROM THIS EVENING’S DIRECTOR Dear Esteemed Guests, Before we embark on this musical journey, please allow me to provide a little background to spark your imagination a bit as it pertains to tonight’s extraordinary program, as creating this show pulled together such a wide range of artistic talent drawn from students, faculty, alumni, and friends from across the Southern California arts landscape. We started with the music. It might come as no surprise that we chose to celebrate OCSA’s 35-year journey into the collaborative power of arts and academic excellence…with opera. Opera has been called the most amazingly collaborative live performance art on the planet, and OCSA is the most transformative art school on the planet, so that’s that – it was a perfect match. Once we curated the musical selections, we turned the entire concept over to Mr. Josh Wood, Director of the Creative Writing Conservatory, and his wildly imaginative students, who crafted stories inspired by this powerful music and carved from their life experiences. We then built collaborations of spoken word, acting, and movement where we could reimagine each piece through fresh eyes and ears, as well as ponder the enduring themes embedded in these stories as tropes of our shared humanity. This evening’s concert will take you on a hero’s journey seen through the eyes of any OCSA dreamer. From the first stroke of inspiration that evokes the muse within, through the unfolding of the artistic process and realization of a dream, each actor, dancer, singer, or designer whose work fills this stage is manifesting their own hero’s journey along the way. Now, we, this happy audience joined together here tonight to celebrate this dream of an OCSA journey, can suspend our reality for a moment and experience a glimpse of life lived onstage as these young artists open their hearts, truly present, truly human, and truly united in this Symphony of Dreams. Happy 35 years, OCSA! Let’s dream a million more. Sincerely,

Ryan J. Reithmeier, D.M.A. Director, Classical Voice Conservatory Orange County School of the Arts

Advancing Care Through Clinical Trials and Research The St. Jude Crosson Cancer Institute

Ongoing research and clinical trials are creating breakthroughs in cancers once thought insurmountable—and we are a leader in bringing these benefits from the lab to the bedside. Our specialists routinely use advanced genomic testing to identify the DNA alterations driving the growth of a patient’s tumor, allowing us to identify treatments and clinical trials that target those mutations. As part of the Precision Oncology Alliance, a collaboration of the nation’s leading cancer research centers, we offer over 100 clinical trials focused on dozens of different cancers—giving our patients access to some of the most promising and aggressive treatments available. For more information or to learn about eligibility requirements for each trial, call St. Jude Oncology Research at (714) 992-3000 ext. 4332.
