FOR FUCHS SAKE
After an incredible 2016 launching a clothing line, taking YouTube by storm and signing another three year contract with Leicester City you might expect star defender Christian Fuchs to be starting 2017 at a slower pace, but there you’d be wrong as his exclusive new jewellery line, in partnership with Lanes Fine Jewellery launches this Spring. SIXTY9°’s Nancy Whittington Coates grabbed ten minutes with Christian to find out more. With the success of your line so far, what was it that drew you to expand to jewellery? It was during a conversation with Ercan the owner of Lanes, when the idea came about. For me it’s a whole new market that I didn’t know anything about; but with Ercan’s expert knowledge of what it takes to create a successful jewellery line I thought it would be an exciting new direction for the brand. The influence of punk styling is clear in your t-shirt designs with the signature skull motif and we can’t wait to see how this translates to jewellery. Without giving too much away what else we can expect to see in the line? Well obviously we’ll be working with the skull design and the many different www.69-degrees.co.uk
parts that go together to make the skull itself, which can make the production itself a little tricky. Most of all we want to create quality pieces and for the designs to really stick out and be noticeable. We want people to love them when they have them! Were you heavily involved in designing and creating the pieces? As you’d expect it was a back and forth collaboration, working together and exchanging ideas until we had the final design that everyone was satisfied with. Do you think we’ll be seeing any of your fellow players in the new pieces soon? I definitely hope so, they should all be wearing them! You’re creating the collection with Lanes Fine Jewellery who are a Leicester institution and of course the official LCFC jeweller, so the partnership seems like a match made in heaven. Will the line be available exclusively from Lanes? Yes the pieces will be available exclusively at Lanes and not available anywhere else. Find out more at www.lanesjewellers.com or see the range in store at Lanes Fine Jewellery, Loseby Lane, Leicester.

hannah myers
Award winning designer Hannah Myers is on the road to success. At the age of 27, Hannah has taken the world of mountain bike attire by storm with her range at Flare Clothing Company. Hannah’s inspiration to start Flare was triggered by a frustration that female mountain bikers did not have access to top of the range clothing that is often enjoyed by men in this sport. Hannah aimed to make a change and began to design her bespoke range of clothing and accessories, which has led her to great success. Last year at the Total Women’s Cycling Awards, Hannah’s designs came out on top as she achieved the Best Mountain Bike Clothing of 2016 prize. As of last September, Flare Clothing has sold more than 7,000 items and recorded a £300,000 turnover. Impressive if you ask us!

Q: Your new album ’24 Hrs’ is your fourth consecutive number one album that must be a great feeling? Olly: Amazing. I’m very proud of that you know to have four consecutive number one albums is brilliant. I never expected in my wildest dreams that I would’ve got this far so, absolutely delighted that we’ve managed to get four consecutive, like you say, number one albums it’s really really amazing so thank you. Amazing. Q: What do you reckon has been the appeal of your music and yourself to make you the most successful male artist to ever come from the X Factor? Olly: I dunno, I’d like to think that I’ve done some great songs and, think people love what I do… I just don’t give anything, I mean this album’s probably the most heartbreaking, most honest album that I’ve done but I think with previous albums you know I have a lot of fun, my album’s are happy and people enjoy listening to them and with this album in particular it’s still happy, still got lots of that vibe on it. Its just luck you know that people like me and people have bought my albums and I’m very lucky that they do because it doesn’t always happen like that so I’m very very grateful.
26 Q: You mention this is your most honest album to date, do you feel you are constantly progressing as an artist and songwriter through your albums? Olly: Yeah 50/50 I mean, I did run out of ideas, I wanted to do something different and I felt with this album I just didn’t know where to go next. What I was gonna do? I felt like writing about what’s been actually, genuinely happening was the right thing to do. I’m just really happy that I did this album and the fact that it went to number one and people really like it. At the start of the year I was like ‘what am I gonna write about? What am I gonna do?’ and I’m really happy that I did this honest album. I’ve always been an artist; I’m just writing about what I’ve wrote on every album that I’ve done, I wrote most of my hits so this album was just an opportunity to do something different and to keep my fans interested and show them a different side to me and I’m really happy and proud of how well it’s done. I can’t wait for people to hear the second track from the album with the other single that we’re gonna release it’s exciting. Q: Is there a particular track on this album that you’re most proud www.69-degrees.co.uk
of you, that you really want people to hear? Olly: I think ’24 Hrs’ and ‘Flaws’ are the two songs on the album that I’m really proud of because for me ’24 Hrs’ the song was something else, a different song that I’ve never done before, production wise and the feel of the song. But also ‘Flaws’ was, I feel, like one of the best songs that I’ve written with the guys that I wrote with. It was really sad but I
“I wanted to do something different and I felt with this album I just didn’t know where to go next” think you have to listen to the songs really to kinda get the idea of what I mean but I love writing really happy feel-good songs but at the same time I mean it’s nice to show people a different side to me and show some emotion and that’s what this album was about. Q: You’re undertaking a massive headline arena tour in March, and
obviously in the summer you’ve got a huge run of outdoor shows that will see you come to Market Rasen Park Racecourse; how do they vary in terms of what you put into them and what you get out of it, from the indoors to the outdoor? Olly: I think it’s fun. It’s really fun being outside and you know the show that we’re doing at Market Rasen is a different gig for me; I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve done racecourse gigs before in the past but not this sort of size and I’m really proud to do it and it gives me the chance to go to different places in the UK that I haven’t been before, do different kind of shows, do something slightly different. I can’t wait I mean, what’s better? Go to a racecourse, I can go there during the day I can, have a little flutter on a couple of the races and then do a gig in the evening. Perfect. Q: How do you go about choosing your set list? Olly: It’s gonna be difficult, you know five albums but you’ve just gotta play the hits and the songs that people know; that’s what I’ll do with the set to make it as entertaining as possible. I’ll throw in a few covers there as well, have a bit of a
27 laugh with the fans and it’ll be a really fun day out and I promise any fan that comes along, it’ll be a right laugh from the start of the day to the end of it. I promise to make sure everyone goes home happy having had a good time. Q: Have you got any kind of pre-stage ritual that you do before you go on? Olly: Me and the band have a little huddle up before the show and we sing one of our songs, well not a song, a song that we’ve got as a team and we’ve been doing it for the last six/ seven years so it’s a bit of a ritual, but I’m sure we’ll be sinking a few shots before the show as well just to get into the racecourse spirit. Hopefully it’s a lovely day weather-wise, hopefully it’s not too wet and people have a really nice summer and really enjoy it. ’24 Hrs’ is out now. Olly will be performing at Market Rasen Racecourse on the 2nd June. Tickets are onsale now at thejockeyclublive.co.uk.

NAILED IT Ever wanted to try before you buy when it comes to nail colour? Well now you can with the arrival of The Hand and Foot Spa at Selfridges Birmingham which uses a newly developed computer system, means that you can put your hand under an IPad and see the colours on your fingers before you commit to it. The polish colours and nail system have also been created especially to make as little damage to the nail bed as possible with the treatment, called Power Manicure, using an IBX coating which moisturises the www.69-degrees.co.uk
nail plate while protecting it from the harsh effects of gel and acrylic. The base coat, colour and a layer of acrylic powder is then applied and cured under the UV lamp. More layers are then applied until the correct strength and colour is created, followed by the top coat. The result is a long-lasting and strong manicure which can last up to three weeks. Prices for treatments start at £15 and can be booked via The Beauty Workshop on 0121 600 6718.

Bobs remain big for 2017; however, ensure you go for a slightly shorter length at the back, working to a longer length at the front. and keep it sleek - locks that ooze with health and shine are the way forward. Perfect for the Ath Luxe look, 2017 also sees the return of the ponytail! Team your ponytail with a texture to make it look effortless or go for a super sleek ponytail style to give a chic statement.

10 YEARS OF EVERYMAN This year marks Everyman Barbers’ 10th anniversary and boy they’ve gone all out to mark the occasion with a complete gut-and-start-over refurbishment of their Birmingham store and the opening of two new stores in Derby and Leicester. “We want to stay at the top of our industry…we do say that we’re ‘an authentic cut above’ and we want to make sure that’s the case as we expand throughout the UK” says Managing Director Noel Gilronan. Chunky wooden mirrors offset the racing green two tone leather barbers’ chairs emblazoned with the trademark E logo. Gilronan confirms that it’s a theme that will follow through in all future stores. The refit and expansion isn’t all the team have been keeping busy with. They’ve recently launched a new bespoke app that acts as a loyalty card and has other key features such as the popular Everycam, which customers use to check for waiting times before visiting or to see if their favourite barber is working. “People forget physical loyalty cards but they never forget their phones these days.” Gilronan says. With every 6th stamp you collect you can get 50% off a haircut and £5 off a professional hair or beard product. The beer is still free, the live sports still rolling, but everything else has certainly moved up a notch or two. But can they keep their prices affordable after the clearly not-so-cheap refit? “Of course we can, we want to be accessible to everyone,” Gilronan adds. Find out more at www.everymanbarbers.co.uk

t r av e l l e r Mystifying Reykjavik
Discover natural beauty and quirky culture in Reykjavik, the most northern capital of the world. Pack some warm clothing and a pair of sturdy boots and venture out. Iceland, and its stunning natural beauty, should be seen in person, not through the pages of a magazine. Even if you’re only visiting for a few days, perhaps as a stopover on your way to The States, here are some tips on how to make the most of your time…
Visiting for the first time? Take a hike: Compact Reykjavik is really easy to get around, and you can see many of the sights on foot. Start by the sea and take a look at the quirky architecture, including the Alþingi parliament building and colourful houses. The Old Harbour, home to the Saga Museum, is a perfect spot to begin a coastal stroll whilst observing the incredible views across the bay to Mount Esja. Sample the art scene: There are museums and galleries galore here. The pick of the bunch are the Art Museum and the informative National Museum of Iceland. Don’t miss the chance to see some of Iceland’s best modern art in i8, either. Pop your head around the door of some of the smaller, contemporary galleries that scatter the streets to find some hidden gems of emerging talent. Experience local culture: Make sure you take in some of the city’s vibrant cultural scene, whether in the Nordic House exhibition space or the Harpa concert hall, worth a trip for the magnificent glass-fronted building alone, inspired by Iceland’s raw and vast basalt landscape. You might be lucky enough to catch one of the free lunch time concerts performed by the www.69-degrees.co.uk
Icelandic Opera, or an open rehearsal by the Iceland Symphony. Climb the church tower: Towering over most other buildings is the Hallgrímskirkja, a beautiful white-concrete church with a lookout point in its spire giving incredible views over the city. Admission to the church is free, but if you want to ascend the tower, there is a small charge – the views are most certainly worth it! Shop until you drop: Sample the great boutiques and independent stores around Laugavegur, so called because it was formerly a hot spring route to where many Icelanders took their laundry. Along every block of this hip street you’ll find eclectic pieces – some might just be small enough to squeeze into your suitcase for the journey home. Once you’re spent up, relax by Tjörnin, the small lake in the city centre. Relax in a thermal pool: A trip to one of the city’s
45 as well though, handcrafted in Iceland using Arctic spring water. The Northern Lights can be seen from several spots around Reykjavik in the winter months and there are loads of tour companies in the city that will make sure you get the best views. To increase your chances of catching a glimpse of this breath-taking phenomenon, visit between the months of September and April, but you’ll need to be patient and head away from the lights of the city. The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is where thousands of travellers go

outdoor pools is a great way to experience local life and enjoy a spot of pampering. Laugardalslaug, which has a steam bath, a seawater bath and a water slide, is one of the most popular. Discover Iceland’s past: From Vikings to volcanic eruptions, learn all about Iceland’s past at the Saga Museum, which uses mannequins based on casts of today’s Reykjavik residents to bring history to life.
Looking for something different? Taste something new: With a feast of international flavours, finding somewhere to eat out is a breeze, but for something a little different why not try Icelandic delicacies like pickled herring or reindeer? Or perhaps a little fermented shark? Take advantage of the local seafood at Fiskelagid or Grillmarkadurinn, but be prepared to shell out for the privilege.
each year to soak in mineral-rich waters that bubble up from below the earth’s surface. It’s worth spending a little more and going for the ‘comfort’ or ‘premium’ package so you don’t have to worry about taking your own towel, and you can enjoy a complimentary drink without leaving the water. Cutting-edge gallery Kling & Bang is the place to go to see some of the city’s up-and-coming young artists and is also rumoured to be a hang-out of musician Björk. Boston is hotly-tipped by locals as being the coolest bar in Reykjavik, with a cosy atmosphere and one of the best happy hours!
Want to know a secret?
Go on the runtur: Experience the city’s nightlife on a runtur – or round trip – of all the great bars. A staple of weekends all over Iceland, expect to be out until the small hours. If you’re unsure what to drink, beer will probably be the most affordable option. We’d recommend tasting a drop of smooth, Reyka vodka Fly from Birmingham Airport to Reykjavik twice a week with Icelandair. Jump on a plane and in less than 3 hours you could be enjoying the sights of this stunning city. From here, Icelandair offers great connections onto 18 destinations across the US & Canada.

BIG SCREEN
Awards Season is upon us once more which means that our cinemas are overflowing with great films to watch, but what happens after all of the heavy hitters have been and gone? SIXTY9°’s Richard Doherty looks at what films to look forward to this spring.
Beauty & The Beast
Potentially one of the spring’s biggest releases. Emma Watson plays our Beauty, Belle, to Dan Stevens’ Beast. The tale that teaches us to look past someone’s exterior to see the person within that was a huge success for Disney in animated form in the early 1990’s is now told in sumptuous live action with several new songs. If you’ve never seen the tale before, a brief rundown: Belle is a passionate young lady, with a heart full of love that yearns for adventure. The Beast is a Prince who’s arrogance and superficial attitudes caused him to be cursed by a spell that can only be broken if someone falls in love with him before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose. Belle becomes trapped in the Beast’s castle and begins to befriend the magical inhabitants who think she could be the one to break the curse. Can these inhabitants play matchmaker well enough to help love blossom before the time runs out?
Tulip Fever
Whilst there are obvious similarities with 2003’s ‘Girl With A Pearl Earring’, this tale of forbidden romance between a young artist and the beautiful woman he is commissioned to paint, set in 17th century Amsterdam, appears to have far more action and carries the weight of no less than three Oscar winners amongst its cast.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2
The end of April sees the much-awaited return of the, quite frankly, gorgeous Chris Pratt’s ‘Star Lord’ and his quirky band of misfits in the follow-up to 2004’s Marvel blockbuster. Strap in for another rollicking ride in space and prepare to fall in love with Baby Groot!
The Circle
Based upon the best-selling novel of the same name, Emma Watson and Tom Hanks lead the cast which also includes Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ breakthrough star John Boyega in a story based around an ever so slightly sinister social media technology company that might not be a million miles away from the realities of today. And is Tom Hanks actually playing a bad guy ??
DON’T MISS DVD : Arrival
What happens when aliens arrive ? Watch and find out as Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker try to decipher what the new arrivals are trying to say before someone decides to blow them up. It’s smooth & understated and whilst it is Sci-Fi, it’s more about humanity. No space battles here.

THE MIDLANDS IS ALIVE WITH A WEALTH OF NEW MUSCIAL TALENT. SIXTY9° MOLLY COPOC EXPLORES THE SOUND OF OUR CITIES AND THE FRESHEST NEW TALENT.
BIRMINGHAM THE LIZARDS
This Birmingham quartet carry a laid back attitude that flows into their mystical guitar riffs. Heavily influenced by 60’s psychedelic vibes, their timeless music will have you hooked. Cameron, Dan, Liam and Harry have certainly established themselves in the psychedelic band scene after the release of their trippy video for debut single Houdini, released late last year. The band has since toured with the likes of Swim Deep and had their single aired on BBC Radio 1.
Acoustic singer/songwriter Dan Wright is taking his hometown of Leicester by storm. This hopeful new artist is no stranger to the music scene having played shows around the UK for the past four years. Inspired by his travels, Dan released his EP “Lyrics on a postcard” early last year and has since played various festivals across the Midlands telling a story thorough his plethora of songs written from the heart. Opening for acts such as Nothing but Thieves and Catfish and the Bottlemen we predict big things lie ahead for this artist. Make a note of the name in your diaries and look out for more music in the future.
LEICESTER DAN WRIGHT
April Towers have stormed APRIL TOWERS their way onto the alternative/ indie music scene and rightfully so as this dynamic duo boast more than 170,000 Spotify listeners. The band prides themselves on their live performances providing mesmerising visuals whilst offering their audience a release from the outside world. Following a successful year in 2016, duo Charlie and Alex are already back in the studio producing fresh new music for 2017. These guys are definitely a must see act! Keep your eyes peeled for the release of tour dates in the near future as we’re sure tickets will sell like hot cakes.

With a trio of albums already under his belt, Grawl!x explores the five stages of grief through his music making his ambient, acoustic sound compelling and somewhat soothing. His utter talent shines through as he effortlessly makes a sinister subject matter a true work of art. Accompanied with his live band, Garwl!x have performed in an array of churches with the colossal space beautifully complimenting the band’s sound. www.69-degrees.co.uk

JIMMY AMNESIA
Take some Indie music, mix in a bit of rock, sprinkle a bit of punk and throw in a bit of Britpop cause why the hell not! This magical concoction leads us to five piece band – Jimmy Amnesia. These local Leicester lads carry a Kasabian-esque vibe with guitar riffs that are sure to get under your skin and stuck in your head. The band have played shows in Leicester and Loughborough and we don’t suspect it’s long until they sweep the nation with their catchy lyrics and likeable character expressed through their creative music videos.

HAGGARD CAT BOTHDAY PRESENT
Nottingham is the home of Robin Hood, Players Cigarettes and now Tom Marsh and Matt Reynolds. This blues duo have been around for a few years now but after the release of their debut album – Charger, the hypnotizing blues-rock sound they acquire has earned them a respected name for themselves on the current music scene. Their live shows are packed full of ground shaking noise that is enough to make you think this vivacious duo where a quartet. If you go along to a live show expect to see endless instrument swapping and hyped up crowds that are sure to make even the smallest of venues come alive.

Brothers James and Harry Davison teamed up with friends Ben James and Jacob Evitts to form guitar driven indie rock band – HANKKS. Taking inspiration from the likes of The Charlatans and Franz Ferdinand the fresh, quirky beats their music inherits makes them one to watch on the current music scene.
Vicious flares of garage rock mixed with audacious rock and roll is Derby trio Unqualified Nurse Band. Rightfully earning their spot as one of the UK’s most hopeful bands, the band released their debut album late last year packed full of electric records that bring a new ounce of powerful character to the stage. The trio have a bright future ahead with heaps of potential and bring something new to the rock scene through their exploration of the depths of rock and rolls history and making it their own.

E S S E N T I A L D O W N LO A D S SIXTY9° ’S JESSICA HOWKINS ON NU SOUNDS FOR SPRING
Blondie are one of those bands that stay just as relevant now as they did since their start in the 1970’s and the release of their new single Fun, just cements that. Debbie Harry’s voice hasn’t lost its magic and for fans of the band, Pollinator will be the album they can’t miss out on at all in 2017.
TAKE THAT – WONDERLAND Take That might have been through turbulent times with the break-ups, the reunion, the departures and even the second departures but it hasn’t stopped three of the five iconic members to carry on melting women’s hearts all over the world. This spring will see Wonderland grace the pop world and it’ll be fantastic to say the least. NELLY FURTADO – THE RIDE It’s been five years since the last Nelly Furtado album and boy oh boy is it exciting to know the release of The Ride is coming! Her single Cold Hard Truth may not have dominated the pop charts but it’s a little taster for the excitement that is yet to come. JOSH TURNER – DEEP SOUTH Country star Josh Turner is returning this March with his 6th studio album, Deep South. After topping the charts with LP www.69-degrees.co.uk
Punching Bag, Josh is set to evolve his country style even further and take the hearts of music lovers everywhere. His previous albums have always been tough acts to follow with his talent but he always finds a way, there is no doubt that Deep South will be another success. DEPECHE MODE – SPIRIT Get ready to kick back and embrace the upcoming masterpiece from Depeche Mode, titled Spirit. The album is the 14th and is set to blow the minds of old and new. Within hours of the iconic trio releasing the first track off the album, Where’s the Revolution, fans and the media expressed their delight – Spirit isn’t just an album to watch out for this Spring, but for the entire year. BLONDIE – POLLINATOR Legendary rock band Blondie are returning this Spring with their eleventh studio album, Pollinator.
ED SHEERAN – ÷ Ed Sheeran is known to dominate the music world with his sweet music and the start of this year saw him already take over 2017 with the announcement of his new album, ÷ (Divide) and two new singles that have just hit the singles charts. Ed has always had a knack for capturing the hearts of everyone who listens to him, he’s catchy and has a lot of sincerity about him, it’s hard not to fall in love with his sound and ÷ (Divide) won’t be changing that anytime soon. GOLDFRAPP – SILVER EYE Four years after their album Tales of Us, electro duo Goldfrapp will be returning this spring with Silver Eye. After releasing their single from the album, Anymore, it won’t be anything less than exciting and fresh but with such a journey through Goldfrapp’s music who really knows what to expect when there has been electro, pop and even glam rock? It’s just going to be absolutely fantastic. TINIE TEMPAH – YOUTH Claiming it to be his ‘love letter to London’ is Tinie Tempah’s third studio album, Youth. Apparently the album is meant to feel more underground and grime, following on from his mixtape Junk Food.

RYAN BLYTH You know that anyone who gets given their big break by Amine Edge & DANCE is going to be pretty special, and Ryan Blyth is exactly that. Having had a string of hits under his belt since 2014 when he started making waves on the scene, his most recent release ‘Show Me’ has been making itself known on all the charts and ha even racked up over a million plays on Spotify. Not bad at all! If you’re into house and bass music, keep this name on your ‘ones to watch’ list for sure – I have a feeling 2017 is going to be a game changer for Ryan. ADALA - HEAR IT EVERYWHERE (ILLUUS & BARRIENTOS REMIX) With a huge, grinding bassline Illyus & Barrientos have given Adala’s ‘Hear It Everywhere’ their signature makeover – it’s a tune I can guarantee you’ll pick out a mile off when you hear it in the club. Incredible vocals, solid groove and that drop… OOF! Another classic from the Scottish duo who can’t put a foot wrong in my book. BASEMENT JAXX - JUMP N SHOUT (ERIK HAGLETON REMIX) If you don’t remember this classic from Basement Jaxx the first time round, then you’ll be thanking Toolroom for letting Erik Hagleton give
the iconic track a new lease of life with a sweet refresh for 2017. The vocal that made the original such a stand out track is here, throw in a big build up and meaty drums and it’s easy to see why everyone from Danny Howard and Annie Mac have been supporting this.. JAX JONES FEAT RAYE YOU DON’T KNOW ME Another classic track that has been given a new lease of life – this time it’s electro dons ‘M.A.N.D.Y Vs Booka Shade’ on the receiving end of some catchy vocals by RAYE and Jax Jones giving their ‘Body Language’ track a fresh sound. I guarantee this one will be all over the airwaves, but if you aren’t familiar with Booka Shade or M.A.N.D.Y yet, make sure you check them out first!

DON DIABLO – SWITCH Don Diablo is a production powerhouse and his new one on Spinnin proves that he has talent by the bag full! Switch has some seriously rubbery synths going on, definitely channelling the 2006 electro house sounds but with a twist that fits the sound of today’s dance floors. It’s one that will definitely stand out – all killer, no filler, as they say – so expect to hear it this weekend, and next weekend, and the one after that!

SIN-FREE SIPPING Picked as one of the top food trends for 2017, low and non-alcohol tipples really are the answer to what to drink when you’re not drinking, whether you’re the designated driver or simply looking for an abstemious night out. From pickle juice to alcohol-free spirits, KATIE SAYERS, Foodmarket and Wine Shop Manager at Harvey Nichols Birmingham, selects her favourite drinks to leave you hang-over free. Seedlip Spice 94, £29.95: The world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit; Seedlip Spice 94 is an aromatic and earthy blend of copperpot distillates, including allspice, cardamom and lemon. It is crafted in a similar manner to a gin, just without the alcohol, and has no added sugar or sweeteners. Perfect with tonic and a grapefruit twist. Seedlip Garden 108, £29.95: The second release from Seedlip, this is a green and floral blend of handpicked peas and hay with spearmint, rosemary and thyme. Mix with bitter lemon or tonic; it’s the refreshing choice for a sin-free sip. Maggie Beer non-alcoholic sparkling Chardonnay, £12.95: From the doyen of Australia’s cookery scene, this wine cellar must-have uses Chardonnay grapes from the famed Barossa Valley to create a non-alcoholic sparkling beverage that makes a smart, celebratory drink.
Elephas Bianco 2015, Lazio, Italy – £12.50: From Castello Di Torre in Pietra, this white wine blends Trebbiano, Malvasia Puntinata and Vermentino that reel you in from the first sip. With a bright straw colour and hints of green, there are aromas of apple, white flowers and peach, while a mineral note adds acidity and a long, persistent finish. When we tasted this at my Wine Wednesday evening it worked really well with brie, but as it is so approachable and easy to drink it would go equally well with light fish, white meat and vegetable dishes.

GETTING ‘EM OFF AND PACKING ‘EM IN An invitation to sit in on a rehearsal of The Full Monty, Simon Beaufoy’s stage adaptation of his own phenomenally successful award-winning movie, is not something a girl gets every day. And when said invitation also includes joining the leading man, fit-as-a-butcher’s dog Gary Lucy, for a chat over lunch, it’s fair to say that this wannabe cougar was purring at full throttle writes Vicky Edwards.
Without doubt the play is every bit as compelling as its movie counterpart, which tells of a group of Sheffield steelworkers who lose their jobs and resort to forming a Chippendale-esque group as a means of making a few quid.
have fitted in seamlessly. “It’s a play that is all about camaraderie and friendship and we’ve really got that with this cast, which is brilliant. Jack Ryder [the former EastEnders star turned director] also has got great energy and great fresh ideas,” he nodded approvingly.
“You really feel for these guys. All they knew was working in the steel works and when that was taken away from them they had nothing else,” said Gary, whose impressive array of screen credits include Danny in EastEnders, DS Fletcher in The Bill, Kyle Pascoe in Footballers’ Wives and Luke Morgan in Hollyoaks, a role that won him the title of Best Newcomer at the British Soap Awards.
On the subject of appearing in his birthday suit, Gary laughed. “Listen, by the time we get to that point in the play we’re well up for it. We don’t think of it as an isolated moment; the whole play builds up to it.”
As with the film, while the core storyline is rooted in men losing their pride as a by-product of losing their jobs, the Northern humour sparkles as beautifully as Mr Lucy’s eyes. “It is very funny,” agreed Gary, “but the characters all have their own stories. Gaz needs money to pay maintenance for his kid, but they all have their own problems.” Freely admitting that, as his first stage role, it was something of a baptism of fire, Gary said: “It was a big challenge and quite scary, but what an opportunity! To play the lead in the stage production of such an iconic British movie was something I had to grab with both hands.” Quick to praise his fellow cast members, Gary told me that the actors coming to the show for the first time
www.69-degrees.co.uk
And without giving too much away, Gary revealed that there are times when the lights – a major part of the final dance – can cause the boys to be exposed for a little longer than is altogether comfortable. “The audience is whipped to a frenzy and then there’s a point at the very end where, if the lighting cue goes wrong as it has done in the past, people get a bit more than they’ve paid for,” he chuckled. Hoping audiences go home with their cheeks aching from laughing, as we said goodbye Gary added: “It’s so rewarding to know that they have had a great time.” I am happy to confirm that a great time is exactly what you’ll have. But be quick – tickets are selling fast. In fact, like the boys at the curtain call, they’ll be gone in a flash.
