Our Legal Awards took place on 8th March. It was a wonderful evening and congratulations to all the worthy winners and my thanks to Becky, Liz, Johanna and Denise for once again putting on such a spectacular evening. I am particularly pleased to say that we raised £3,000 for my Charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind, thanks in no small part to the excellent speech by our VIP guest, Lord David Blunkett. Thoughts now turn to the AGM on 24th April. I am delighted to say that we have applicants for all the places that have become open on Council. Many of those applicants are new to BLS. It is really pleasing to see that level of interest, particularly from the younger members of our legal community. We are always looking for ways in which we can improve our communications with members. We have a lot of exciting initiatives for 2018 and beyond but sometimes struggle to make the right people aware of them in our member firms. We think it would be a good idea if we could have an ambassador in each firm who could act as a focal point for spreading information about BLS and its events to the right people in their firm. If you might be interested in putting yourself forward to become an ambassador for your firm then please do contact Becky in the Office or myself, James Turner or Linden Thomas, who can tell you more. All being well our bicentenary book should be being printed by the time you read this and will be launched at the AGM, when copies will be available for all those attending. It is going to be a truly impressive cornerstone of our 200th year celebrations. The book started life as an idea from the Think
Tank of Past Presidents and has been a labour of love for many people over the last few years. But it has taken the skill, tenacity and creativity of our author, Dr Sally Hoban, to bring it to life. My thanks to Sally and to the editorial group (Dr Malcolm Dick of the University of Birmingham and our own Anthony Collins, Peter Wiseman and Linden Thomas). There has been another important event for BLS since the last Bulletin; the opening of the new Revolución de Cuba bar/restaurant in our old library in Temple Street. It completes a lengthy journey to secure a future for our building and to help secure the finances of BLS for many years to come. The credit goes to Chris Owen, our tireless Champion of a solution for the Temple Street premises and the Property Sub-Committee that Chris has led so successfully. Chris steps down from Council at the AGM and we shall miss his wisdom, common sense and that twinkle in his eye! I can’t believe that this is my final piece in the Bulletin as President. It has been an enormous honour to have been your President but I could not have done it, or more importantly, had such fun doing it, without the support of the Board, led by Eileen Schofield and the Office team led by Becky Lynch. I am hugely grateful to them. Also, a huge “thank you” to my fellow Officers, Vice President James Turner and Deputy Vice President, Linden Thomas. James takes over as President at the AGM and the Society could not be in better hands.

SOCIETY NEWS
STEP OUT FOR CHARITY
A FAIR DEAL 4 INDUSTRY The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) - alongside major industry bodies - is developing new mandatory requirements to ensure businesses in the West Midlands, of all sizes, gain fairer, flexible leases. Professionals and interested parties in the region now have until 12 April to have their say on the consultation’s recommended requirements.
Lease negotiations and rent reviews can be a complicated process between landlords and tenants of commercial property, and in some cases, can lead to a dispute between parties. RICS’s proposed mandatory requirements - known as the Code for Leasing Business Premises – will, however ensure both parties are armed with the relevant information necessary to negotiate the fairest rent agreement and lease terms available to them.
This year’s Birmingham Legal Walk will take place on Monday 21st May 2018. The sponsored walk takes place around a 10km course in and around Birmingham city and is in aid of the Midland Legal Support Trust. The need for free legal advice centres has grown in the past few years with the recession increasing poverty and reducing support services and funding for advice centres. The Midland Legal Support Trust works to counteract this by supporting organisations that prevents families being made homeless, prevents destitution, helps older people gain the support to which they are entitled and helps women and children who have been trafficked for domestic servitude or prostitution. Anybody is welcome to join the walk as long as they are fit and healthy enough to do so. There is no minimum or maximum number for a team. Individual participants are most welcome and can join other walkers on the day if they wish. Dogs are permitted providing they are kept on a lead at all times. It is free to register for the walk but they do ask that each participant pledges to 6 www.birminghamlawsociety.co.uk
raise as much money as they can for the Midland Legal Support Trust. Money raised goes towards improving access to free legal advice for some of the most vulnerable in our local community. Paper sponsorship forms will be included in your registration pack and an online fundraising page will be set up for you with a link and details. This year’s walk should take between 1.5 and 3 hours; you can walk it as fast or as slow as you like, there is no rush! Please ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes or trainers suitable for the distance. Feel free to bring anything else with you that that you feel will aid your personal comfort on the day. You might consider a fleece/jacket, sun cream, a hat, rain coat, snacks (drinks will be available when you register), plasters and a camera for a success selfie or two at the end! To register and to find out more visit www.mlst.weebly.com/birminghamlegal-walk
Paul Bagust, RICS Global Property Standards Director explains: “Property is likely to be the second highest business expense after wages, therefore signing a lease means that you are probably entering into one of the most significant financial commitments that your business will make.” The Code for Leasing Business Premises not only provides helpful tips for tenants, it also provides guidance for landlords on how to be ‘Code-compliant’ to ensure they too, benefit from a more transparent lease with greater flexibility in its terms. Measures include clearly stating in the lease agreement the proposed duration of the tenancy, rent review dates and upfront details of service charges a tenant is liable for. Paul commented: “We’d welcome any feedback from property professionals and interested parties, as these mandatory requirements will not only serve to improve standards in the industry, but also raise more awareness of commercial property issues, especially among smaller businesses.” Visit www.rics.org/consultations

LACK OF LEGAL TALENT LEAVES FIRMS STRUGGLING ON work. Firms are struggling to keep up with changing employee and client requirements, such as the increased demand for private practice – they’re struggling to find the candidates to meet their needs. And as the uncertainty around Brexit rumbles on many firms are left in a difficult position.”
New market analysis has revealed that law firms nationwide are struggling to recruit the talent they need according to specialist legal recruitment agency, Clayton Legal. “We’re finding that clients across the country and in all areas of the law are having a hard time recruiting quality candidates. Firms just can’t seem to find the talent they require to do the job,” says seasoned recruitment professional Lynn Sedgwick, MD at Clayton Legal. In
fact, Clayton Legal carried out research into the Challenges and Opportunities Facing Legal Firms in 2018 and 67% of those firms surveyed said that a shortage of skills was their main concern. Citing a changing political and technological landscape as the main reason, Lynn offered her thoughts: “Over the last five to ten years new technology and new norms such as working from home have changed the way we
The ability to be flexible is a key determiner when attracting the best talent according to Lynn. Recruitment is vital for bringing new ideas and experience into the firm, yet law firms must remember that innovation also needs to come from within to have the best chance of attracting quality candidates. Indeed, keeping those candidates is top of mind for many firms according to Clayton Legal’s research, with 20% of firms surveyedare concerned about staff retention. Speaking about what attracts the best candidates, Lynn offered this advice: “Whatever their area of legal expertise firms must invest in the future, whether that’s through technology or developing first-class training to bring on the next wave of leaders and experts. Candidates want to see responsiveness and flexibility to meet changing demands: law firms stand still at their peril.”
BIRMINGHAM LAW FIRM RAISES OVER £20,000 FOR DEMENTIA A Birmingham law firm is celebrating after having raised £20,534 for Alzheimer’s Society with a year-long charity partnership.
Squire Patton Boggs has been fundraising across 2017 with a number of activities such as an abseil, silent auction and taking part in Memory Walk. The law firm united friends, colleagues and family members against dementia and raised awareness about the condition throughout their fundraising. Neil Taylor, Partner at Squire Patton Boggs, said: “This fundraising has been very much a partnership between us and Alzheimer’s Society: we have been involved in some public events such as volunteering at the Memory Walk in Sutton Park last year. It was a very inspiring moment when the final figure was revealed and it is double the sum we raised last year.” Squire Patton Boggs employees Rose Chaudry and Christina Georgiou, both Associate Solicitors, co-chaired the charity committee that oversaw the calendar of events dedicated to raising money and awareness. 8 www.birminghamlawsociety.co.uk
Rose Chaudry said: “We are very proud to have raised so much money, with fantastic backing from across our office. The scale of the problem that dementia presents has become apparent as so many people have a connection to someone with dementia. Dementia doesn’t just affect the person, it affects everyone around that person.” The NHS estimates that there are currently more than 13,000 people over-
65 living with dementia in Birmingham and this number is set to increase. Lisa Courtney, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society in Birmingham said: “This is a fantastic achievement and Alzheimer’s Society is very grateful for all their fundraising.” To find out more about dementia or how people can access support in Birmingham, visit Alzheimers.org.uk or call 0121 706 4052.
Roger Frederick Coates, solicitor of the Supreme Court for 50 years, senior partner of Buller Jeffries for nearly 40 years, died on 25 February 2018, aged 80.
OBITUARY: ROGER COATES
Born in Nottingham, Roger Coates attended St Peter’s School, York and upon completion of A Levels, secured 5 years’ articles of clerkship with Neal Scorah, Siddons & Co in Sheffield (later DLA Piper). At the same time as commencing articles, he read law at the University of Sheffield graduating with a first class honours degree in 1959. Roger Coates joined Buller Jeffries in 1965, becoming senior partner in 1973. Between 1970 and 1980, he was Deputy Coroner of Birmingham. Throughout a long and distinguished career, Roger Coates applied his intellect and knowledge in some of the leading cases: in industrial disease (Stokes v GKN); construction and JCT (Ossory Road); and product liability (Ferro, Capital & Counties v Hampshire County Council, Sun Valley v Pastspeed). In 2012, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Birmingham Legal Awards where he commented “I believe that there is still some merit in good old fashioned values such as honesty and hard work”. In the same year, Buller Jeffries merged with DWF LLP, with Roger Coates becoming a consultant for 2 years before retiring formally in 2014. He was described variously in Chambers and Legal 500 directories as “the Godfather of all claims”, highly astute with vast experience, “having an encyclopaedic knowledge of product liability”.
The watchwords for Buller Jeffries, of quality, efficiency and integrity, were Roger Coates’ watchwords as well. A committed family man, he will be much missed by his wife Anne, daughters Joanna and Caroline, son in law Peter and grandchildren Rory and Harriet.
A memorial service and a celebration of his life was held on Wednesday 14 March 2018. Donations to the Army Benevolent Fund or Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces, c/o A. E. Bennett & Sons, Stratford-Upon-Avon, telephone 01789 267035.
BIRMINGHAM: FUTURE OF COURTS After an investment of £8.12m by HMCTS, Birmingham Civil Justice Centre has been transformed into “a prime example of the future of our courts and tribunals”, according to CEO Susan Acland-Hood. 12 new multi-purpose and digitised courtrooms, more modern public space, and 19 new rooms for the judiciary have been built – bringing together all the courts and tribunals for the first time, within a combined Civil, Family and Tribunal Justice Centre. The building now hosts 59 courtrooms and chambers, 60 judges and around 223 members of staff – whose roles range from ensuring trials progress and assisting the judiciary to helping people who are attending court. The investment into Birmingham Civil Justice Centre is part of the Government’s £1bn reform and modernisation of the justice system – ensuring Britain’s courts and tribunals are fit for the 21st century. The County Court is one of the busiest in the country and was responsible for 3.3% of all national civil cases issued in the past 12 months. The Family Court is also one of the largest and received 496 care and 1,945 private law applications. 3.5% of national Social Security and Child Support cases were listed at Birmingham over the last 12 months. The state-of-the-art Civil Justice Centre is bringing together knowledge and expertise in managing court and tribunal cases from across the region – meaning a better service for citizens in the county and beyond. www.birminghamlawsociety.co.uk 9

BEST PRACTICE
“it is essential that all future developments within civil justice are online with a regime of predictable costs”
THE FUTURE OF PERSONAL INJURY LAW IS ONLINE
TONY N GUISE, DIRECTOR, EARB LIMITED On 25 May 2016 the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) took evidence about the use of ADR in the civil justice system. One of the Group’s conclusions was that:
QC drew attention to eight issues faced by the civil courts and explained why arbitration for personal injury (PI) claims has a valuable role to play.
“The Online Court being proposed by the Judiciary of England and Wales could play a massive role in fostering a culture change amongst the population at large. It is an opportunity the sector must seize, coupled with reforms to legal education and more active engagement of the wider public.”
•
Increased cost
•
Change in overriding objective
•
Strict adherence to rules and multiple applications which can work injustice
•
Costs budgeting
•
Everything on paper adding to the costs of managing each case
•
No or limited front desk staff in local county courts
•
•
That conclusion was undoubtedly right but unfortunately Parliamentary time could not be found for the necessary legislation to enable the Online Court to be brought into being. Despite this setback there remain viable alternatives to the civil courts where the case management process is online from commencement to final hearing. In terms of access to justice it is essential that all future developments within civil justice are online with a regime of predictable costs because that is what the citizen expects of civil justice today. The Claims Portal (https://www. claimsportal.org.uk/) (The Portal) is an example of how the civil justice system has been brought online by a stakeholder solution developed by the joint efforts of Claimants, Defendants and Insurers working with the MoJ to introduce effective IT in the civil justice system. Since going live in 2010 The Portal has successfully resolved almost 400,000 claims during 2016-2017. In evidence to the All Parliamentary Group on the use of ADR Andrew Ritchie 12 www.birminghamlawsociety.co.uk
days, with significant costs savings. A Pilot is being undertaken between Clyde & Co and PIcARBS involving 12 well-known Claimant firms including Stewarts Law, Hodge Jones; Hugh James, Slater & Gordon and many more together with major Insurers including AXA Insurance. Why do Insurers, Defendant and Claimant firms embrace PIcARBS? •
Cost are much lower
•
It puts the citizen’s need for swift, cost-effective justice front and centre
•
Arbitrators are free to adopt flexible interpretation of the rules to work justice
•
Hourly rates are agreed from the outset with the infrequent costs dispute being resolved, online, by C-ADR (http://www.costs-adr.com/)
•
Everything is online reducing significantly the costs of managing each case
Uncertainty about which judge will hear the case and whether he or she will have the relevant expertise
•
There is no need to waste time queuing at Court or arguing about lost papers
Courts not coping with increasing volume of cases
•
Only specialist QCs and senior Juniors will hear the case
•
The Platform has virtually no limit to its capacity for cases and is an encrypted and secure environment
The issues that concerned him were:
Arbitration can be used in personal injury claims with an online Platform to enable citizens to receive compensation more quickly and at lower cost. To date arbitration for PI has not been used sufficiently. Supported by an online Platform Andrew Ritchie has developed an arbitration scheme for PI and clinical negligence: the Personal Injury Claims Arbitration Service www.picarbs.co.uk (PIcARBS). PIcARBS uses a simple, post-event agreement so that post protocol the claim can proceed straight to arbitration. 16 QCs and 19 senior Juniors from major sets, all specialists in personal injury work, are signed up to the scheme which aims to deal with claims within 28
Such innovative solutions offer real opportunities to solicitors and barristers alike to attract work which they will be able to handle efficiently and at lower cost as a result of PIcARBS’ case management being entirely online. TONY N GUISE Tony practiced civil litigation for 30 years. In May 2016 he ceased to practice to focus on developing IT solutions for the civil justice system. eARB Limited provides the Platform for the PIcARBS arbitration service.

BEST PRACTICE WHY BUSY LAWYERS MUST EAT HEALTHILY In a world of books, papers, computers, and hand-held devices it’s easy to become absorbed, overwhelmed and blind to the neglect of our diets. It’s especially important to offset the long, sedentary hours with a healthy diet and exercise. The stress of a hectic work life is compounded by poor diet and lack of exercise writes Sylvia Kenimer. Poor nutrition is not only linked to illnesses and diseases such as obesity, diabetes, some cancers and stress, it can impact the quality of your work and how well you represent your clients. The key to healthy eating is to plan ahead and tailor daily eating habits to provide well balanced nutrition within your busy schedule. If you follow a healthy eating plan now, your overall bodily health will noticeably improve and it will also relieve your stress levels.
And remember that alcohol in excess causes imbalance in blood sugar levels, also adding to stress. Managing stress through healthy eating will result in a world of relief. Instead of having a coffee, unwind and feel a moment of calm with an herbal or fruity tea. Warm drinks are soothing to the nerves and contribute towards the nutritional and hormonal inner balance of your body. Studies have shown that Vitamin C plays a crucial part in bodily nutritional balance, too. Be sure to incorporate oranges daily into your diet. Fresh avocado has many nutritional values. It contains essential acids that are not only healthy, but can promptly help to reduce anxiety and stress, build your concentration. You may notice your mood improving throughout your day. We know that the mood you’re in contributes to how well you’re able to work. Another good form of healthy eating is by choosing the right carbohydrates. Things like whole grains and sweet potatoes.
“Managing stress through healthy eating will result in a world of relief.”
Planning could start at home where you prepare the healthy things you’re going to eat during the day. Also, you can plan when and where you will eat lunch. Sometimes conflicts will impact your lunch period, so it is prudent to keep a small stash of healthy meals and snacks on hand. Many people are in a rush on their lunch break but it's beneficial to eat slowly and enjoy your meal. Eating quickly increases weight gain and indigestion.
It may seem like chocolate isn’t something you’d incorporate into a healthy diet to reduce stress; however, it has been found that dark chocolate has a profound emotional impact as well as nutritional. Eating chocolate gives you a feeling of indulgence, thereby boosting your emotional state, as long as you’re not overindulging. Antioxidants found in dark chocolate aid the body in de-stressing hormonally. So enjoy a couple of pieces of chocolate a day to reduce stress.
If you go out for lunch with co workers suggest restaurants with healthy options. Consider meal portions and look for places with a wide range of menu items. Resist the urge to order appetizers, avoid snacking on bread before your meal arrives and don't order too much food. It takes a while for your body to get the message that you are full. You might be satisfied just eating a main course. Remember, if you're still hungry you can always order more food.
And let’s not forget the importance of planning to keep active. If you know you’ve got a healthy snack to hand at your desk, you don’t have to worry about scrambling to find something unhealthy, that will probably end up filling you with empty calories.
In the morning, don’t choose sugary foods or have too much coffee. In meetings, avoid pastries and go for protein rich foods such as lentils, nuts, and seeds, which slow the release of sugar in the bloodstream, thereby lowering stress levels. It's important to keep in mind not to skip meals and to snack healthily between breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Avoid highly refined foods. Things like white bread, certain pastas, sugary biscuits, or processed foods can be laden with hidden sugars. Stick with rye products, brown bread, porridge oats, and rice. 14 www.birminghamlawsociety.co.uk

“I would strongly urge all businesses to nominate a data protection officer/privacy manager and ensure that they are ready by 25th May 2018.” 1995 Data Protection Directive which was adopted at a time when the internet was in its infancy. Member states of the EU have been given two years to ensure that they are fully implementable in their countries by May 2018. 4. Do I need to worry about this now, as we are leaving the EU? The Queen’s speech in June 2017 confirmed that the GDPR will form part of UK law following the withdrawal from the EU. 5. My business does not need to comply with GDPR as I do not store or process any personal information. I have heard this comment so many times over the last 12 months. It is also a point that is made internally by some departments. There is a general misunderstanding of what constitutes personal data. The regulations state that any company that stores or process personal information about EU citizens must comply with the GDPR. This effectively means every business with at least 1 employee or those who keep records of their customers will be required to comply with the GDPR.
IS YOUR BUSINESS GDPR READY? In a recent survey conducted by Downtown in Business an astonishing 77.8% of businesses reported that they are GDPR ready……. really? We have been partnering over the last few months with DIB and some leading IT providers to conduct roundtable events within Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham, to provide some guidance and support to businesses to prepare them for GDPR.
It would appear that many businesses that have attended these sessions have been unaware of their responsibilities and what practical steps they need to take before 25th May 2018. Victoria Brown at HR and Employment Law specialists High Performance Consultancy, looks into some of the common points raised about being GDPR ready. 1. I have GDPR covered…. It is with my IT provider Whilst the General Data Protection Regulations will address the significant changes in technology since the Data Protection Act 1998, the considerations do not just stop with your IT provider. A thorough understanding of how your business deals with data is paramount. Knowing where data is stored, that location’s security, as well as determining whether the data is being shared will be critical, come May 2018. I would recommend that companies undertake a data audit. 16 www.birminghamlawsociety.co.uk
2. I outsource everything, so my third party providers are liable for sorting out GDPR This is not the case. Companies will need to establish the external bodies that hold or process data on their behalf and what steps they are taking to comply with GDPR. 3. I don’t need to start looking at this until 25th May Absolutely not – you need to be ready by 25th May, not thinking about it. In 2016, the EU adopted the General Data Protection Regulation. It replaces the
I would strongly urge all businesses to nominate a data protection officer/privacy manager (whichever is appropriate) and ensure that they are ready by 25th May 2018. This is a great opportunity for business owners to get their housekeeping in order. It is also something that should not stop on 25th May and each business needs to consider how they will monitor data handling and address breaches in the correct way. The fines from the ICO (Information Commissioners Office) could be quite high if you have neglected the way in which you store or process data. In addition, it is evident from our recent roundtable sessions, the DIB poll and just general feedback from our clients that raising awareness and training is very important. I would strongly advise that the changes you make are covered within your policies and induction process. For existing staff, good communication and briefing sessions about the changes will reduce your future risk of breaches. A practical guide to GDPR is available, please contact alex@ highperformanceconsultancy for further information.

Edgbaston High School aims to provide the highest quality of education for girls at every stage of their development, and this begins with building strong foundations in the Preparatory School. Westbourne, home to the Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception classes, provides the perfect environment for girls aged 2½ - 5 years. In their unique setting, the teaching and encouragement at Westbourne helps pupils to develop confidence and character.

event Bygott Biggs has held in the city in recent weeks, having hosted the Birmingham Trainee Solicitors’ Society with a Cocktails and Careers event at The Alchemist on 13 March. At the event, the BTSS heard from Kelly Barker, Jane Biggs and Chris Lake (Gowling) about career planning and current market trends. Whilst the two events differ in content, the overarching theme of ‘giving something back’ remains the same for Bygott Biggs, according to director Kelly Barker. Kelly said; ‘As responsible corporate citizens, we are very passionate about finding ways to give back to the local community in which we work and to our industry. Whether that is in careers advice for younger professionals such as our recent cocktails event for the BTSS or our new partnership with Smart Works, the key is finding where we can add value outside of the day to day world of legal recruitment.
Bygott Biggs, the legal recruitment specialist, has announced a new partnership with Smart Works, Birmingham - a charity that provides high quality interview clothes, styling advice and interview training to women in need. The Snow Hill based recruiters will launch the partnership with a drinks reception at Hotel du Vin on 19th April from 6-8pm and is inviting women from the city’s law firms to join them in raising much needed funds and resources for this great cause. INVEST IN THE YOUR BED 1
With National Bed Month upon us it’s the perfect time to focus on the place we spend one-third of our lives: our bed. Lisa Artis, The Sleep Council’s sleep guru in residence said, “We recommend replacing a bed at least every seven years and buying from a reputable retailer, either online or instore, and that stocks beds from manufacturers which are members of the National Bed Federation (NBF). The NBF’s Code of Practice ensures that products can be trusted to be safe, clean and meet trading standards requirements.” In seven years, you spend over 20,000 hours in bed (that’s over 850 days or nearly two and a half years), not just lying there, but tossing and turning as much as 60-70 times a night. With figures like that, it’s not hard to see why beds wear out in time. If your bed doesn’t come up to scratch, it’s time to invest in a new one. Here’s our pick of the very best beds and bedroom accessories to ensure your sleep is as stylish as it is sound.
ICON REINVENTED The best things in life just get better with age; champagne, stilton, whiskey and The G-Class, the luxury off-road vehicle from MercedesBenz, long considered a design icon. What began in 1972 with a collaboration agreement between then Daimler-Benz AG and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in the Austrian city of Graz, the G Class was first offered as a civilian version in 1979 and has found a home on the driveways of gentleman farmers, heads of states, hip hop superstars – even the pope has had one! So enduring is its timeless style and popularity that it has even outlived its replacement – the GL Class. Its external appearance has not changed significantly since 1979. Iconic elements continue to serve very specific purposes and to give the G Class its unique appearance. All these are still found in the new G Class: the distinctive door handle and the characteristic closing sound, the robust exterior protective strip, the exposed spare wheel on the rear door and the prominent indicator lights. While the exterior maintains the iconic classic look, the interior of the G-Class has undergone a fundamental modern redesign. With its off-road character and luxury appointments, the G-Class has always combined two extremes. Every detail is finished by hand with the utmost care. Numerous design features from the exterior have been transposed into the interior such as the shape of the round headlamps, for instance, is reflected in the side air vents. Off road the new “G-Mode function comes into play independently of the chosen driving mode as soon as one of the three differential locks has been activated or the LOW RANGE off-road reduction gear has been engaged. This off-road mode adapts the adjustable damping of the chassis and the steering as well as the accelerator characteristic, avoids unnecessary gear shifts and thus ensures optimum control and maximum off-road capability. Add in a ground clearance of 270 mm to the front axle gear and the G-Class provides plenty of potential for off road pleasure seekers. The new G Class is available to order from Spring. Prices are yet to be finalised for the UK but are in line with that of the existing models in the rest of Europe so expect an entry price of around £89,000 for the 350 D model. Elphaba has become such an iconic role; what about her attracted you to the part? The thing I was most excited about was how incredible the journey is that Elphaba goes on. She is massively changed by the experiences she goes through and the characters she forms relationships with. The emotional arc is so huge that it’s a gift for any actor to play. It goes without saying that Elphaba’s songs are epic! Stephen Schwartz’s score is incredible and singing those songs is so thrilling.
HELEN WOOLF / GLINDA Glinda must be a joy to play? I’m so proud to be taking on the role of Glinda, there are so few people who have played the role, so it feels very special to be part of that small family! She has become an iconic character in musical theatre, and it is so rewarding to be part of a show that puts a friendship between two strong female characters at the heart of the story.
Why do you think she has become such an icon? Audiences connect with Elphaba because of everything she stands for. She is incredibly passionate and cares so much about things being just. She always tries to help others and stays true to herself no matter what. I also think people can relate to Elphaba because she is an outsider. She is different and most people - at some point in their lives - have felt this way. She puts out the message that it’s OK to be different and to never apologise for it. How long does it take to get the green makeup off after a performance? No longer than 10-15 minutes if you want to do a thorough job. After a matinee performance I might be less thorough as I know I have to ‘re-green’ for the evening show. But no matter how hard you think you have scrubbed, you will always find a bit of green paint behind your ear ! Do you have a favourite song from Wicked? My favourite song is No Good Deed. Elphaba is in emotional turmoil at this point, so it’s not only exciting to perform from an acting point of view, but also the orchestrations are so powerful and intense that it’s a thrill to sing.
What is the most challenging aspect of Glinda’s character to play? Glinda has a lot of comedic lines, and she often has a slightly airheaded approach to things. But it’s important to play her with a truthfulness, as underneath the bubbly exterior she feels things very deeply. It’s also important to look after yourself vocally and physically to play the role eight times a week. What is your favourite moment in the show? The end of Act 1 is a really spectacular sequence which still gives me chills every night. It’s the perfect combination of the story reaching an amazing climax, an incredible song by Stephen Schwartz, and a total visual spectacle. I won’t say any more for those that haven’t seen the show yet! For tickets visit birminghamhippodrome.com

CHARMING CHIANG MAI
A bustling city in the mountainous north, Chiang Mai is the spiritual capital of Thailand and charms visitors with the ruinous remains of walls, moats and temples in the historical old town. Surrounded by lush rainforests, waterfalls, jungles and elephant sanctuaries, Chiang Mai has a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for both restless and weary wanderers, writes Jonathan Fraser Flying to Chiang Mai, has never been easier with Qatar Airways flying daily to Hamad International Airport from Birmingham Airport before heading to Chiang Mai.
The rooms at the Shangri La offer a comfortable home from home with beds which are so comfortable that your forty winks may well turn into four hours.
We travelled business class and settled into our own little oasis of calm, comfort and quality with, what appeared to be, a never-ending glass of Lanson champagne, stunning food and over 4000 movies and TV shows to enjoy. The flight takes approximately 15 hours in total so it’s worth investing in. Arriving in Chiang Mai we checked straight in to the luxurious Shangrila Resort Hotel which is perfectly placed within the heart of Chiang Mai, just a short stroll from the vibrant Night Market. The marble lined reception and guest areas of the Shangri La Hotel leads to a tropical garden and relaxing poolside- the perfect place to relax with a Tom Yum Mojito or two.
Dining at the Shangri La is a truly world class event with the hotel’s Kad Kafé, named after the local word for market, offering a delicious international spread that includes Thai, Chinese, Japanese, European and Mediterranean specialties. Chiang Mai is a shopper’s delight. From the city’s street food markets where you can graze on plates of Pad Thai, fresh griddled satay and flavourful fish or succulent sliced mango and sticky rice to the weekly Sunday market offering a mixture of crafts, clothes, gifts, music, food and drinks, shopping is a fundamental part of the Chiang Mai experience. Make sure you visit The Night Market at Chang Pheuak Gate (North Gate) which comes to life the moment the sun sets. A wonderful atmosphere abounds as you wander through the fairy light lit stalls selling fabulous fakes alongside local crafts and clothing. Located just around the corner from the city’s Night Market the Warorot Market offers fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meat as well as prepared street food to enjoy on one of the benches on the central garden area. For those feeling adventurous it’s the

It’s a great opportunity to see and buy products and crafts made and sold by local people. Walk down to the main square to see live music, dance and theatre from performers of all ages and abilities or take a seat at one of the many bars and enjoy some people watching over an ice-cold beer. If the taste of Thai street food has tempted you into the kitchen then why not try one of the city’s cookery schools? Pon, our tutor for the day,
BHX INVESTS IN PASSENGER EXPERIENCE
Birmingham Airport has started a multimillion-pound programme of development works to improve the passenger journey through the airport terminal. tried valiantly to awaken our inner chefs with some simple recipes; a spicy Tom Yum Soup, a Thai Green Chicken Curry, Pad Thai Noodles and a Mango, coconut cream and sticky rice. As we were each cooking our own meals it was down to us to pay attention and make the most of the training we were given or starve! Pon started each course in the classroom giving us an informative and funny demonstration of what to do, how to do it and why do it that way before sampling what the dish should taste like. After that we were led to our cooking stations where our ingredients awaited. The finished dishes were divine and I couldn’t believe I’d actually made them! After preparing our own lunches it was time to think about feeding others and who better than some retired elephants? I’ve always been wary of trips that involve animals for fear of unwillingly getting involved in their exploitation so when I heard about a retirement home for elephants where you could go and help care for these amazing animals in their final years I have to say I was intrigued. The Elephant Care Centre in Chiang Mai offers a home to elderly elephants once their working lives had finished. Previously, elephants who had spent their lives working moving logs in the depths of the rain forest were simply set free to roam the jungle but after a life of captivity and human contact there was no way that they could survive alone. The peaceful camp is currently home to 12 elderly elephants, ranging in age from sixties to their early nineties. Each elephant is
cared for by their mahout and enjoys a day mixed of exercise and roaming, feeding sessions, mud baths and showers- no visitors ride them! Our day started as we were immediately greeted by an elephant enjoying ‘buffet time’ in one of the centre’s lush meadows. The elephants are always pleased to see visitors as their arrival indicates treats and our time with these amazing creatures was predominantly taken up with making sure they were fed! From baskets of bananas we moved on to preparing great vats of cut grasses mixed with rock salt and vitamins before organising desert - sticky tamarind balls loaded with added vitamins followed by sticky rice banana leaf parcels – a sort of elephant cereal bar that they absolutely adore. Our reward for feeding our new friends was to take a swim with them, so after a good rub and roll in the mud we set about getting all that mud off with bamboo buckets and scrubbing brushes whilst our elephants suck up water and shower us with their trunks – a magical ending to a wonderful trip. Despite its large size Chiang Mai offers visitors a truly Thai mix of adventure, hustle, bustle, history and relaxation. We can’t wait to return. Commenting on the investment, David Winstanley, COO for Birmingham Airport, said: “This investment follows record passenger growth and to ensure that we’re prepared for the coming summer period, when the airport will welcome new longhaul services to New York and Toronto, as well as many new popular short-haul destinations. “The service we give our customers is an absolute priority for us so we’re investing a great deal to improve the airport journey.” The Airport is also developing its retail and catering offer, with the recent opening of The Factory restaurant and the arrival of Kurt Geiger to its airside shopping experience. Later this spring, a new Bottega prosecco bar will open as well as wrapchic – an Indian inspired burrito and sandwich outlet. A covered walkway to the terminal is also under construction for those who choose to walk to the terminal from the free drop off car park, and a new 178-guestroom Hilton Garden Inn hotel will open in the summer. New digital wayfinding and signage will be introduced before the summer season. Additional staff are being recruited in key customer facing areas, including terminal operations, customer relations and security officers.

LET’S FEED BRUM: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BIRMINGHAM’S SOUP-ER HEROES
Homelessness is undoubtedly the hot topic of recent times and it has been hitting the headlines again as it’s been revealed that the number of people rough sleeping has risen for the seventh consecutive year. Up 169% on 2010’s figures, it is estimated that 4,751 people were rough sleeping across the UK in 2017. Passionate about making these statistics a thing of the past and offering support, guidance, and solutions to those in need, Let’s Feed Brum is working hard to help Birmingham’s homeless population.
wants to help shine a light on these projects from the street. Offering food, hot drinks and essential supplies to between 50 and 100 homeless people each night, the Let’s Feed Brum team is out six days a week, come rain or shine. They currently serve around 500 hot meals each week, with the support of around 15 food suppliers across the city; some of which is food that would otherwise be thrown away and some that is prepared especially for Let’s Feed Brum. In addition, the team hands out everything from toothpaste and deodorant,
should turn to, Let’s Feed Brum volunteers are trained to act as street mentors; just being a friendly ear and gaining their trust, which is often the biggest challenge in the process of getting someone off the streets. By being out six nights and two mornings a week, Let’s Feed Brum volunteers strike up relationships with people and can then direct them to the fantastic services that Birmingham has to offer; from St Basil’s and SIFA Fireside, to niche networks and community groups. Sometimes, it’s just as simple as getting to know someone on the streets and educating them about the real benefits of these services – and reassuring them that the experts are there to help. Let’s Feed Brum serves from a central base each evening, but also has walkabout teams that take supplies to those that, for whatever reasons, can’t make it to base. These teams of people take the provisions on foot across the breadth of the city, meaning that as many people as possible helped. The walkabout teams don’t only operate in the evenings: twice a week, early-bird teams are dispatched just after sunrise, taking flasks of drinks, food, toiletries and clothing around the city. Starting the day off right with the most important meal of the day and a chat with the Let’s Feed Brum volunteers, there are now 25 regulars that the walkabout team encounter, allowing them to build up trust and begin to offer advice, support, and friendship to the familiar faces that they see.
Established in November 2016 to build on six-years’ work by Inspiration Support, the Let’s Feed Brum campaign brings together restaurants and retailers, the corporate community, and the city’s residents to be part of the solution to tackling homelessness. With some fantastic work being done at the top level by Andy Street and his taskforce, including the recent ‘Change for Action’ alternative giving scheme, Let’s Feed Brum 26 www.birminghamlawsociety.co.uk

But the food and supplies are really a means to an end; by being able to meet the basic needs and grant access to the vital necessities, Let’s Feed Brum forms and builds relationships with these hard-to-reach individuals. Whether they’ve been forgotten by the system, let down by the traditional methods, or are just not sure where they
