It’s an odd feeling, witnessing history being made. It’s a sensation though that I was fortunate to feel this Autumn when, miracle upon miracles, I was one of the lucky few to get tickets to see Kate Bush perform live and on opening night too. Much has been made by the press of Bush as a reclusive artist; weird yet wonderfully talented, isolated but infinitely inventive. After witnessing her live creation I have to admit that some of this is indeed true. Inventive, definitely. Wonderfully talented? For sure. An isolated recluse? Well the person I saw dancing joyfully on stage, engaging with an adoring audience and evidently loving every second was as far removed from a recluse as you could get! But why has one of the most inspiring UK artists been so misunderstood? In a world where marketing men rule rather than musicians, Bush has never played the celebrity game, never chased the headline or compromised her artistry purely for commercial gain. It’s a standpoint seldom understood in a ruthless world; to innovate, challenge and create for the sake of creation itself. It’s a philosophy we have always tried to follow with our magazine. Everything we recommend we try, everything we feature we choose because we think it’s actually of interest to our readers. Obviously we have commercial considerations but we’re choosy and only support those that we feel deserve our endorsement.
dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL
Just as Bush’s desire to offer her vision of what a concert could be has now redefined the genre, our commitment to quality, relevance and honesty will hopefully go towards redefining the expectations of a free, local magazine. AUTUMN 2014
This issue we are pleased to bring you a focus on trends for Autumn, both for him and for her as well for the home. We fall in love with the quirkiness of Quebec, tear around in the new BMW M3 and look at how you can get the very best out your children’s education.
AUTUMN 2014 ISSUE 12
So pop the kettle on, turn up the thermostat, sit back in your chair and relax with a good read. Alternatively you could try for some last minute concert tickets… you never know your luck!

SINATRA SELECT Destined to be remembered as one of the finest releases by Jack Daniel’s, this special edition Tennessee Whiskey celebrates a legendary friendship between Frank Sinatra and Jack Daniel’s that lasted more than half a century. Sinatra Select honours Frank Sinatra’s loyalty - a lifetime fan of Jack Daniel’s. Look onstage any given night and you would see Frank Sinatra, in his trademark tuxedo, captivating audiences everywhere. Look a little closer and his favourite drink, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, wouldn’t be far away. With a bold oak flavour, rich amber colour and exceptionally smooth vanilla finish, this ultra-premium whiskey is especially full of character and its dark rich amber colour is achieved by exposing the classic Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey to extra layers of toasted wood on the inner surface of the barrels. This results in a smooth, but bold whiskey, which embodies the smooth, bold character of Frank Sinatra and his impeccable taste. Packaged within a sleek, limited edition box, Frank Sinatra’s signature and iconic fedora hat is found on the bottle, along with the Jack Daniel’s Country Club logo, designed by ‘Ol Blue Eyes himself. Also enclosed is a booklet telling the captivating story of the legendary Jack Daniel’s and Frank Sinatra’s relationship. Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select is available in Selfridges and The Whisky Shop with an RRP of £150. For more information, visit http://www.jackdaniels.com.

THE IMPORTANCE
OF BEING NIGEL
www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
19
During their professional lives, it is not uncommon for actors to return to roles that have especially stretched or excited them. To be offered a second chance at their Hamlet, Lear or Hedda Gabler is often a proposition which few actors can resist - provided the part remains within their age range. However, it still comes as something of a surprise to find Mr. Nigel Havers reprising the role in The Importance of Being Earnest which he first played a mere thirtytwo years ago. The intervening passage of time seems to have left only the faintest of impressions on Nigel, to judge from his perpetually youthful appearance. It may help to explain his readiness to return to the part of Algy in Oscar Wilde’s classic high comedy. “I have always wanted to do The Importance again and talked about it for years,” explains Nigel. “Time went by and eventually I woke up one morning and said to myself that we should do it before we all died. Being thirty years too old should not prove to be much of a barrier. Take the 1950s film of The Importance of Being Earnest. Edith Evans as Lady Bracknell appears to be about eighty-five and Michael Redgrave and Michael Denison as Jack and Algy look as if they are both over fifty. Men did in those days. Ronald Harwood reminded us that The Importance is the funniest comedy in the English language and so we couldn’t hope to top it. However, we decided to ask somebody to give it a framing device and so it is Simon Brett who has written the witty prologue. I can’t give too much away but what I can say is that audiences will certainly get this play performed by actors of a certain age with extras thrown in.” Nigel has very happy memories of Sir Peter Hall’s 1982 production in which he was joined by a stellar cast including Dame Judi Dench as Lady Bracknell, Zoe Wanamaker as Gwendolyn and the late Anna Massey as Miss Prism. “We had a ball doing it,” recalls Nigel. “I think that it was the finest stage work I’ve ever done. We hope to have an equally good experience this time around but with a
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere generated by this 2014 production is the unexpected connection between this year’s revival and the National Theatre staging, as Nigel explains. “We asked Lucy Bailey to direct the production without knowing that she had sat in on our rehearsals back in 1982. ” It was at this period, from the late 1970s into the early 1980s that Nigel emerged as a leading man. The success of the National Theatre’s Importance cemented the impact which his performance as Lord Andrew Lindsay, the hurdling aristocrat, had made in the Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire the previous year. He was the hottest of hot properties.
“Looking back, in retrospect, it was indeed all happening for me. That was all down to my agent Michael Whitehall. I did whatever he told me to do and I just got on with it.” Whitehall is probably best known now as the irascible father of actor/comedian Jack Whitehall, Nigel’s godson. Hasn’t the senior Whitehall retired from representation to pursue a career in comedy? “I know but I’ve refused to leave” reveals Nigel. “I’ve always tended to go with the flow. I’m what’s known as a letter-box actor. I tend to do any script that comes through the front door. My wife can’t understand it. She thinks that acting is faintly stupid. It’s not a proper job, she says. I grew up at a very good time to cut your teeth and I’ve also been very lucky in that I’ve worked with the best in the business. On A Passage to India for example, I had dinner every night for a year with David Lean.” Chariots of Fire seems to have been a pivotal moment for Nigel. Its recent stage incarnation in which Lord Andrew was played by his sometime nephew Tam Williams was “a tremendous show. I think I must have seen it a dozen times during the run, including one night when Vangelis www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
was in. I’m still friends with everyone on Chariots. We had made this film for no money and even when it was nominated for Academy Awards, we did not have high hopes. David {Puttnam} simply said that we were not going to win but that we should have a beer and enjoy ourselves. And when it was announced that we had won the first Oscar, all David could say was Bloody Hell!” Given his background as the younger son of Michael Havers, Margaret Thatcher’s Lord Chancellor, it is perhaps surprising that Nigel did not feel honour bound to follow the traditional Havers career path. “There was no family pressure on me to go into the law” he says. “I had an elder brother who was doing that for me. He is eighteen months older than me and he is now a top Silk. My Dad was very chuffed that I’d made a success of acting and it was only after he’d died that we discovered that he’d recorded every single piece of my television work.” Like many actors, Nigel prefers to look ahead. “I just don’t dwell in the past – it’s always the future which interests me- and as a co-producer of The Importance, I’ve worked bloody hard. I don’t differentiate between film and theatre: in fact, my wife always complains that I project too much, particularly in restaurants.” Rehearsals, Nigel promises, will be “something else. I must apologise to Lucy in advance.” Nigel recently concluded a lengthy run in Coronation Street, thoroughly relishing his role as the caddish Lewis, a character that had overtones of an earlier television triumph. “The Coronation Street cast and crew were the most delightful people who made me very welcome,” he says. “In a way, Lewis was a reincarnation of The Charmer. I thought that playing The Charmer would have ended my career but it was so successful that LWT wanted to revive it. But I’m dead!” I pointed out. “We can get round that” they assured me.” Perhaps one of the reasons The Charmer worked so well was my turning to the camera. As we saw in House of Cards, if you talk directly to an audience, they feel as if they are colluding with you and they love it.” A new production of Oscar Wilde’s brilliant comic masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest, runs from the 21st October to the 25th October at the New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham. different spin. Peter Hall was extraordinary, brilliant. I loved the atmosphere which he created in the rehearsal room and he had a really good handle on the play. He gave us a very good note. The more the audience laughs, he said, the more seriously we should play it.”

STYLE ADVICE: BUYING THE ULTIMATE WINTER COAT Still probably the biggest fashion purchase of the season, the winter coat needs to be adaptable, practical and of course stylish. Thankfully fashion house Burberry has come up with the blanket coat this season so we can essentially commute in our duvets, I love it when style meets practicality writes dluxe Fashion Editor Sy Anne Taylor. Here’s my top tips for a toasty commute: Fabric: For both durability and warmth it has to be wool. For a more lightweight option try a cashmere/wool mix. Tweed and leather are also classic materials that won’t date in a hurry. Fit: Take into consideration what you will be wearing underneath it as there is nothing more irritating than sleeves bunched up under your armpits. Style: Larger figures look best in lean cuts so avoid double-breasted coats or those made of thick material. For petites stick to on-theknee lengths to avoid swamping your frame. Ankle length coats can look particularly dramatic for the very tall so take advantage of your stature. Colour: Despite the kaleidoscope of colours and patterns around this autumn, you’d be wise to stick to classic colours such as black, grey, navy, brown and cream for a true investment buy. Price: The truth is you’ll be wearing this coat as often as you’ll be hitting the snooze button over the winter months so it’s worth considering spending some money to ensure you get the best quality and a coat that will last – it’s all about the cost/wear ratio. www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk

RETURN OF THE M The launch of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé heralds the arrival of the fifthgeneration of the iconic highperformance sports car from BMW M and for the first time the Coupé and Saloon models receive individual model names, M3 and M4, in deference to the different model series that provide their basis. Another first is the adoption of a turbocharged engine for this BMW M model: the highrevving, 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology has been specifically developed for this purpose, and produces a maximum output of 431hp. Its peak torque exceeds the figure recorded by the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly 40 per cent. In spite of this, the new engine also achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent.
other technical highlights. During the development process the engineers worked closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional racing drivers to achieve a balanced, overall concept: high power, low weight, driving pleasure.
Both the M3 saloon and M4 coupe feature aerodynamics to optimally channel the air around the car in the quest for ultimate performance, while also ensuring the engine, powertrain and brakes receive the requisite cooling, even when operating under heavy loads on the racing circuit. The aggressively styled front apron, smooth under-body and the clearly defined lip spoiler at the rear of the M3 saloon reduce lift by an equal amount at the front and rear axle, for superior
handling. Meanwhile the Aero Curtain and M side gills, the latter with integrated Air Breathers minimise turbulence in the front wheel arches. These elements, together with the aerodynamically optimised side mirrors in familiar M twin-stalk style, are not only distinctive design features; they also help to reduce drag.
The new six-cylinder in-line engine: highrevving, turbocharged engine sees a slight power upgrade over the previous V8 to 431hp, now delivered between 5,500 and 7,300rpm, with maximum revolutions set at an unusually high figure for a turbocharged engine: 7,600rpm. The standard sprint from 0-62mph takes both cars just 4.3 seconds with manual transmission, or just 4.1 seconds with the optional M DCT, while the top speed is 155mph (electronically limited). The new powerplant also boasts excellent fuel economy: the combined consumption in the EU cycle is as high as 34mpg and CO2 emissions are as low as 194g/km, an improvement of more than 25 per cent over the previous model’s figures.
To maximise dynamic ability and ensure excellent efficiency, a weight loss of over 80kgs has been achieved compared to a comparably equipped predecessor model. Specific weight-saving measures include the increased use of lightweight materials: both models now feature a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof.
The Ultimate driving machine? Available to order now at £56,175 OTR for the M3 Saloon and £56,635 OTR for the M4 Coupé, with more power, better handling and superior economy the case is a strong one, the only way to find out is to try one for yourself.
BMW M engineers have paid particular attention to the car’s aerodynamic performance, and incorporated the latest Active M Differential amongst numerous

BIRMINGHAM HOME OWNERS MOST DESIGN CONSCIOUS Three quarters (74 percent)of UK homeowners are proud of their homes, but just one percent feel they have achieved the vision for their home, according to the inaugural Big UK Houzz Report, for which nearly 8,000 Houzz users in the UK were surveyed. Houzz, a leading platform for home renovation and design, found that over a third of Birmingham homeowners decorate their homes at least once a year (35 percent) with 18% of people changing their homes specifically to keep up with the trends – the highest percentage in the UK! Dispelling the myth that UK homeowners improve their homes just to add value, the majority of respondents are renovating and designing their homes to make them better fit their needs. Improving the look and feel (78 percent) and improving functionality (55 percent) top the list of motivations. Just one third of UK homeowners are renovating with a goal of adding value to their home (34 percent). To find out more visit www.houzz.co.uk.

FAMILY The one time of the year you actually want to look like an old witch, the Halloween traditions of pumpkin carving, costumes and candy have a much more sinister origin. Rae Stephenson unearths some haunting truths about Halloween and offers some advice on creating a spooktacular night! Starting out as a Celtic Pagan Festival originally named ‘All Hallows Evening’ Halloween signified the end of harvest for the celtic people and the official start of winter. Not too scary you may say. Well the spooky part actually comes from the belief that on this day, the boundaries between the living world and the afterlife crossed, meaning the dead were free to wander the earth! In order to soothe these souls, people wore masks and disguises, and so the tradition of wearing costumes began. The tradition for ‘Trick or Treating’ came some years later from the rather morbid practice of ‘souling’. In the 1800s children and the poor would go door to door offering to pray for the dead in exchange for food or money and thus began the tradition. It’s unlikely they received Haribos though.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! PA R T Y T I M E ! Whether you’re throwing a fangtastic family party, or just looking for activities to keep the kids entertained this Halloween, it pays to be prepared. With the high street seemingly falling into a fright night frenzy each October, the thought of trawling through the shops for the best Halloween treats and tricks is enough to make anyone scream… Luckily, dluxe is here with our very own treat for you: our selection of terrible treats for a scarily good Halloween.

There’s nothing quite like a ghost story at Halloween to get the palms sweating and the heart racing. In the Midlands particularly, with its rich industrial history and abundance of listed buildings, castles and museums, we are lucky (or unlucky) enough to be the home of some of the most prolific ghost stories you are likely to hear.

The Theatre Manager Having managed the New Alexandra Theatre for over twenty five years, Leon Salberg died within the theatre and is said to still walk here. The ghost of an unknown woman has also been spotted. The Midland Eye Centre Many will have visited The Midland Eye Centre and never thought to keep their own eyes peeled for ghostly goings on. Legend has it that a priest was called to exorcise this building in the 90s after a number of people reported hearing cries from empty rooms and even claimed to have seen the ghostly figure of a ward nurse only visible from the waist up wandering the corridors! So if you happen to spot her, at least you know it’s not your eyes playing tricks on you… The Birmingham Baby Killer This entity was blamed for killing a month old infant in Ladywell in the 1950’s. The family’s four year old son claimed he saw a ‘white dog’ sitting on the child’s face prior to the suffocated body being discovered. Soon after the death, the building was plagued by whisperings and unexplained tapings. The Attic at Aston Hall A woman suspected of having an affair by her husband was locked in the attic where she lived for several years before dying. She is said to still make noise, calling out her innocence and to be freed.

WHY MAKING THE GRADE IS
NO LONGER CHILD’S PLAY With more young people competing for fewer university places, and with the average university student paying up to £9,000 a year in tuition fees, Steve Spriggs, Managing Director of William Clarence Education elite tutors, looks at why making the grade has become a serious business here in Birmingham.
So how do you give your child the opportunities to make the most of their education and achieve their dreams, whilst still providing them with a balanced and healthy upbringing? The first task is to have a plan – it is no longer enough to wait until young people develop or make up their minds, education choices are too time sensitive and need preparation in order for them to succeed. So treat educating your child as you would any other task – have a plan that you can follow through. Remember, you can always change it as circumstances alter. As a minimum, know what sort of schools you will be looking at (public or state, co-ed or single sex), where they are, how much they cost, day or boarder. Then ascertain what you need to do in order to get in.
your child’s aptitudes, personality and natural abilities – for example, why send a sporty child to a school for academics, choose one with a record of athletic achievement. For a growing number of families, homeschooling is the solution of choice, especially for those who are based in a number of countries or who have relocated for work. This is where one or a team of tutors is placed into the home for a set timeframe to mirror the academic process. Choosing homeschooling as an option for a month to a year can provide a child with the 1-2-1 attention they need to adapt to a new place, culture and language. Pressures on these children can be different from those based permanently in one home – they can often need to socialise and interact in adult circles much younger than their peers. A homeschooling programme can reflect this with time factored in for etiquette and social experiences such as visiting art galleries, sports competitions and fine restaurants. This can provide young people with a mix of skills and experiences that can accelerate their educational attainment.
HOW DO YOU GIVE YOUR CHILD THE OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR EDUCATION AND ACHIEVE THEIR DREAMS, WHILST STILL PROVIDING THEM William Clarence Education, we feel that the key WITH A BALANCED AND HEALTHY At to your child achieving their academic potential is matching the student with a suitable tutor – we UPBRINGING?

Some 44% of working mums would sharing their maternity ALL ads set KEHS.qxp_May ad set 2012 02/09/2014 12:32 Pageconsider 82 leave with their partner, according to Workingmums.co.uk annual survey.
FANTASTIC A LEVEL RESULTS AT KING EDWARD VI HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS King Edward VI High School for Girls is celebrating its best ever A Level results with 38% girls achieving A* grades at A level, (the national average is just 8%): a record 90% of girls achieved A* - B grades, 20% gained places to read Medicine and all 11 girls with offers from Oxbridge were successful.
The number of women who would consider sharing their leave when the new shared parenting legislation comes in next year has risen by 3% since last year and may in part be due to a rising number of women who are the main breadwinners in their families - over 17% of women who were living with a partner say they are the main breadwinner and only in a small number of cases is this because their partner has been made redundant or had to reduce their hours. The survey of over 2,390 working parents covers a wide variety of issues, from childcare and flexible working to finances, discrimination and self employment. Many women said the economic situation was affecting how long they took for maternity leave. Some 46% had returned to work early due to the recession or cost of living. Some 10% only took between one and three months’ maternity leave. DLuxe The majority, however, took between seven and 12 months. Although wide 70% said they went back to work because they (92mm x 136mm high) needed the money, 60% said they would work even if money was not an issue.

She had a learned paper on congenital heart disease and migraines published in the prestigious American Journal of Medicine and will study Medicine at Christchurch, Oxford. Twins Jenny and Carrie Soderman scored 14 A*s between them; Carrie will read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, while Jenny will study Chemistry at Oxford. "I’m delighted with our outstanding results this year,” said Principal, Ann Clark. "Girls have followed their hearts and won places on a range of courses from Classics and Law to Political Sciences, whilst the number of girls taking science subjects is in complete contrast to national trends; almost 40% of our girls have gained places to study Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths. BABY STEPS 45
SHE IS ALSO A FIRST TIME MUM TO BABY DAUGHTER LOLA, BORN IN JANUARY 2014. HERE SHE CHATS TO DLUXE ABOUT KEEPING FIT THROUGH PREGNANCY AND THE PRESSURES ON PREGNANT WOMEN TO STAY IN SHAPE. There is quite a lot of pressure put on pregnant women surrounding keeping yourself fit and healthy: As a pregnant woman, you are constantly bombarded with the rights and wrongs, what to do and what not to do while carrying your child. Exercise is just one area that is often up for discussion; whether you are not active enough or you are being criticised for putting your baby at risk by overexerting yourself. For me personally, I feel that the pressure put on active pregnant women is the fear that other people have for you. My health professionals were very supportive and agreed that I should continue with my daily workouts - as long as you and the professionals are happy, then no one else matters. It can be hard for any pregnant woman to feel like doing any exercise: At the beginning you may be suffering from severe fatigue and at the end you feel like you are carrying a whale around! I think the important thing is to listen to your body and know what feels right for you. Finding time as a new mum to be active is always going to be a struggle. When Lola was born I started taking her out on a walk every day, this is especially easy when your new-born is sleeping for hours. I carried Lola in the Papoose whilst walking so the combination of walking and carrying helped my general fitness no end. Adding work back into the equation does ultimately add another hurdle to your fitness routine: I’m lucky as my job is obviously very physical but if you are sitting at a desk all day before going home to look after your baby it can be a struggle finding time to work out.
“LISTEN TO YOUR BODY AND KNOW WHAT FEELS RIGHT FOR YOU”
WIN A MONTH OF PERSONAL
TRAINING
Why not make the most of your lunch hour and take a 30 minute walk? Or rather than give into the temptation to slump on the sofa once your baby is in bed, why not plan in an evening’s exercise? Fitness networks, DVDs and online classes can all be done in your own home, at a time to suit you.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING FIT Ultimately you know what feels right for you but if you would like to add in some gentle exercises then here are a few of my favourites. WALKING – whether it’s a leisurely stroll or a power walk, walking is something we all have access to. Pre-baby: it’s the perfect opportunity for some ‘me’ time. Post–pregnancy: getting out and about with your baby has so many benefits for the both of you. SWIMMING – it goes without saying that swimming is a fantastic activity through pregnancy and with baby. It’s low impact, so perfect to ease those pregnancy aches and strains and, after your baby is six weeks old, it is something you can enjoy together. CARRYING – don’t under estimate how much benefit there is in carrying your baby around all day. It is a great way to burn calories and you’ll be bonding with your baby too. STRETCHING – Tummy time is a perfect time to do your stretches. Encourage her/him to look up and play as you stretch out on the floor. The Plank is perfect for this! OH CANADA! For a long time now, Canada has been on my list of places to visit yet, for reasons I’m not 100% sure of, when the Lonely Planet guides work their way out of the bookcase and the laptop’s search engine goes into holiday hyperdrive, my plans to explore the land of Maple Syrup have always been outshined by the idea of bustling metropolises, rural retreats, elegant European architecture, action and adventure. Who knew that I would find all of that and more within the Quebec Province of Canada, writes Jonathan Fraser.
G
etting to Quebec is easy. There really is no longer the need to drive halfway across the country to find a direct flight when nearby airports such as East Midlands and Birmingham International operate such frequent shuttle flights to Amsterdam Schipol and Paris Charles De Galle. In under an hour, and for less than a train fare, travel to anywhere in the world is truly at your fingertips. What’s more, checking in your luggage at your local airport means you don’t need to worry about lugging your cases around your route all you need do is enjoy the journey, something I found incredibly easy en route my Air France flight to Montreal.
With a flight time from Paris of under 8 hours, the journey to Montreal is nowhere near as daunting as many other destinations. The daily Air France flight is a busy one meaning larger planes are employed so even if you don’t turn left when you enter cabin, there’s plenty of room to spread out and relax. I opted to travel Premium Economy which gave me a wider seat with more legroom and the ability to recline to an almost flat bed level of comfort and enabled me to take advantage of the excellent personal entertainment system in front of me. A great touch was the personal power outlet for keeping my tablet computer charged – I’d been making full use of the complimentary Wi-Fi in the Air France lounge before my departure doing some research into the part of Canada my travels were taking me to; the Province of Quebec. Founded in 1608 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, the City of Quebec became an important trading post and port along the route from France to China. Years of colonial struggle, unrest and war between the French, British and North Americans followed before the Quebec Act of 1774 which paved the way for official recognition of the French culture and language which is still used today within the province.
American past are in full evidence whether it be in the Victorian houses that line the streets of Quebec City or in the Art Deco skyscrapers of downtown Montreal. The province of Quebec undoubtedly has a dash of the European about it whilst maintaining a character that is all of its own.
In between these two big cities however lies mile upon mile of prairie and parkland meaning that wherever you are in the province, the great outdoors are not far away. La Mauricie National Park is made up of almost fifteen thousand square miles of forest, lakes, hills, valleys and everything else that makes up a beautiful and unspoilt countryside.
HOW TO GET THERE Air France has three daily flights to Montreal from £494 and KLM flies daily to Montreal and Vancouver from £494 and £623 respectively. Air France and KLM fly to the world from 18 departure points in the UK and Ireland via their Paris and Amsterdam hubs. www.airfrance.co.uk www.klm.co.uk Flights from Birmingham International Airport to both Paris and Amsterdam are available throughout the day. Historically the slum of the city, where visiting Sailors would carouse away their time in the city, the Royal Square has been renovated to become the jewel of this beautiful city. Make sure you take the charming funicular back up the hill though!
All of Montreal! Just wandering the streets is a joy thanks to the city’s public art policy; a percentage of the budget of every new building has to be spent on public art making the city a vast open air gallery. The NotreDame Basilica, with its brightly painted and highly detailed interior, is absolutely stunning, whilst the streets around the Quartier des Spectacles feature a diverse array of cultural activities as well as bustling bars and restaurants. Whilst in Quebec take a trip to the stunning Montmorency Falls- a natural waterfall that is actually bigger than Niagra Falls at 275 ft high and 50 ft wide.

Celery and Stilton Soup Serves 4 , Preparation Time; 10 minutes, cooking time; 30 minutes.
Ingredients
DINING
After an afternoon crunching through autumn leaves or an evening’s adventure watching fireworks soar and guys crackle, what could be more comforting than coming home to a bowl of deliicious home made soup?
1 oz butter or margarine 1 small or ½ medium celeriac, chopped 1 large leek, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 whole head of fresh Fenland Celery with leaves, chopped (reserve some leaf for garnishing) 850 ml vegetable or chicken stock 150 ml milk 75g Stilton cheese Salt and pepper For the croutons: 1 small white loaf (1day old), cut into small cubes 2 tbsp olive oil 50g Cheddar, grated
Method Melt the butter or margarine and add the celeriac. Stir and then sweat for 3-4 minutes. Add the leek and garlic and cook for a further 3-4 minutes and then add the chopped celery and stock. Gently simmer with the lid on for 15 minutes or until the celery is just soft. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Liquidize and then sieve if a smoother texture is desired. Stir in the milk and cheese and reheat until the cheese has dissolved, taking care not to let it boil. Garnish with croutons and ½ tsp finely chopped celery leaf. If preferred the cheese can be omitted from the soup and garnished instead with the cheesy croutons for a less intense flavour. Cheesy croutons: Mix the bread cubes, olive oil and grated cheese in a bowl. Scatter onto a baking tray and cook for 20 minutes at 180C/350F/Gas 5. Cook for another 10 minutes if not golden brown. Cool and store in an airtight container for up to a week.
Creamy Dolcelatte and Brocolli Soup
Method
Perfect to cheer up a damp, dark night or great in a mug for a light lunch at the weekend, this soup does it all.
Ingredients
2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed 1 medium potato, peeled
and diced 1 bay leaf 400g broccoli 1 ltr vegetable stock 150g Dolcelatte cheese
1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan and then gently sauté the onion for 5 minutes until softened but not coloured. Add the garlic, potato and bay leaf. Cover with a lid and cook for 5 minutes, stirring a couple of times until the potato is starting to become tender. 2. Cut the broccoli into 2-3cm pieces and add to the pan along with the stock. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, or until the broccoli is tender. Roughly chop the Dolcelatte,
www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
and stir into the pan, until it has melted. 3. Remove the bay leaf, and also remove a few of the broccoli florets to garnish the finished soup, keeping them to one side. Using a hand blender or liquidiser, blitz the soup until it is as smooth as you wish. Season with pepper and a little salt (the cheese is quite salty so don’t go overboard on the salt). 4. Serve the soup hot, garnished with the florets.
One of this summer’s most perfect places to make the most of outdoor living was definitely Turtle Bay on John Bright Street. It’s an incredibly vibrant place to eat with its sky blue and sunshine yellow décor, steel drum table bases and light shades. The loud reggae music and the island-style beach shack bar all adds to the Jamaican atmosphere. As well as a Desmond Dekker poster on the wall and a large Bob Marley mural, it’s got the perfect Caribbean vibe going on. I even think the kitchen is housed in a kind of industrial shipping container. What better way to kick off the Turtle Bay experience than with a Marley Mojito made with Appleton Special rum, midori, fresh mint and watermelon, with home-made ginger beer. It was very special indeed. Their Happy Hour is manic so cocktail service is pretty slow between 5pm and 7pm, but there are so many great choices to choose from but we say buy in bulk!
The menu is bursting with mouth-watering delights like prawns, patties and pulled pork and classics like jerk chicken wings, ribs, squid, fried bait and fritters. Our starter selection of authentic jerk dishes of chicken and prawn were succulent and the special marinade of herbs and spices gave it a fantastic aroma.
For your fine food fix, find me at www.msdeliciouspr.blogspot.com The city’s vibrant independent food and drink sector is set to shine at the Birmingham Independent food fair at Millennium Point on Saturday 13th September. DINNER- EAST Z EAST The fantastic East Z East chain, from Manchester opened its doors on Broad Street in August. The restaurant lauded as ‘the home of Punjabi cooking’ made its long anticipated arrival in Birmingham to much fanfare. This opening also marks the sixth East Z East restaurant to open in the UK and the owners, the Raja brothers of Bradford, have retained all the winning formulas that have not only shot the original East Z East on Manchester’s Princess Street to the top of the tree in Punjabi Cuisine, but more importantly kept it there. The restaurant is a gleaming new addition to the top of Broad Street with the utmost attention to detail with the interiors as well as the food. If you go, make sure you start with mixed starter platter because you will be spoilt for choice! The seafood one is particularly good and the mini vegetable samosas are perfect.
After a Reggae Rum Punch cocktail we got down to the main dishes. By this time, the restaurant was packed and had a real party vibe.
My favourite mains were the Chicken Lahori (£10.95) baby chicken on the bone cooked in ginger and chillis which was very succulent and spicy. I also enjoyed the spicy Lamb Keema (£11.95) with the super sized family naan (£3.95) which my kids found hysterical when it arrived on a big tree-like chrome stand! Everything about East Z East is size-able from the dishes and naans, to the chandeliers and the staff’s smiles.
My hubby enjoyed a really tasty goat curry in a hearty looking one-pot and the kids had the roasted jerk pulled pork in a brioche bun with sweet onion chutney and chips. I could have eaten those sweet potato chips all day long. Turtle Bay gets tops marks for atmosphere, food and cocktails and it’s a fantastic addition to Birmingham. www.turtlebay.co.uk www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk

GOOD TIMES AT DU VIN
50
Cementing their reputation for fine food and drink in the city, Hotel Du Vin have decided to offer guests the opportunity to be educated in the finer things of life and what better way to celebrate American Independence Day than with an evening dedicated to the delights of Bourbon writes dluxe’s Jon Fraser. Nowadays we’re becoming much more interested in how and where our food is produced as well as what goes into it. It is little wonder then that with concern over the contents of our plates, attention should also be turned to what goes into our glass also. Thankfully though, discovering the source of our drinks cabinet’s contents is much more fun than a free range chicken and an organic olive, especially at Hotel du Vin whose range of evening events offer guests the opportunity to learn something new whilst sampling some of the finest wines and spirits that this infamously well stocked bar is renowned for. “ It’s all about having some fun, trying something new and learning a bit more about where things come from” says manager Tony Elvin as he shows us into one of the hotel’s private function rooms lined with bottles of expensive dark liquors, tasting glasses, spittoons and bottles of mineral water to cleanse our palettes and help keep our heads clear. Tonight we may well be sampling some of the finest and most expensive American bourbons available but other events have included wine tasting tours of France and Italy and there is an Autumn Sunshine Rum tasting scheduled for the 17th October as well as a Penfold’s Wine event on the 8th November. As with all of the evenings, light bites or, in the case of the Penfold’s Wine event, a four course gourmet dinner is provided as part of the evening. Due to the American theme we were to be treated to a selection of juicy ribs, mini burgers and sweet potato fries halfway through our tasting. But back to the Bourbon. Baefore we could get started on the tastings, head barman and authority on all things alcoholic Ben gave us a quick insight into the background of what we were drinking. Did you know for example that Bourbon is distilled from corn? No us neither. It in fact must be made from a minimum of 51% corn with a mixture of rye, wheat or malted barley making up the remain. The resulting clear liquid is placed into oak barrels to mature and caramelise; this is what gives it its characteristic rich, dark colouring. Served neat, over ice or with a little water, bourbon can also be found in popular cocktails such as The Manhattan, Old Fashioned and Mint Julep.
There was none of this cocktail nonsense for us though as ourselves and the other guests all started to sample the different varieties of Bourbon on offer with the assistance of some entertaining and informative tasting notes from Ben; a tickle of cinnamon and a toasty wood finish anyone? All joking aside- and we made lots of them, Ben’s chatty nature, guiding notes and good humour meant that the whole room felt confident enough to impart their opinions and settle on their favourite tipple- for me the mid-priced Woodfords Reserve.
After sampling five different bourbons ranging in strength from 40% to 57.2% and ranging in price from a very reasonable £21 to over £100 a bottle, I was having trouble focusing effectively let alone tasting but one thing I knew for sure is that I’d had an incredibly entertaining and unusual night that had left me wanting to know more. It was also excellent value at just £45 which included tasting five fantastic bourbons and some wonderful food. I can’t wait for Rum night! A mischief-making masterclass in fine dining by The Master & Margarita One of the city’s most eagerly anticipated venues is set to throw open its doors at The Cube this October – and we can’t wait. The Master & Margarita is the latest stylish restaurant to set up home in the development and takes its name from the famous Russian novel by M. Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita, describing a fantastic world inhabited by a fast-talking cat, a diabolical magician, an outcast writer (The Master) and the spicy Margarita, a woman who falls madly in love with him. Taking inspiration from the book, the 160-cover restaurant will be all about misleading and teasing, introducing guests to a whole new world of flavours, challenging their senses and encouraging them to open up to new dining experiences. The lair of The Master and Margarita is a comfortable cocktail bar for guest to enjoy a cocktail or pick a bottle from our sommelier’s best wine list. General Manager Aleksandra Ivahno says, ‘we are striving for a unique dining experience for the restaurant savvy where you can experience the delights and aromas of authentic Indian cuisine, an Indian fusion grill and seafood dishes. There will also be an eclectic choice of cocktails, mocktails and a fabulous wine list for the bon viveurs of the city.’ Sommelier Genevieve Bonifacio, has masterfully put together The Master’s five course tasting menu, a top class offering with carefully matched wine flights. Front of House Manger Alina Kuzmina says ‘The Master & Margarita will not deny its English influences either and will offer The Margarita’s set menu for afternoon teas, serving traditional and distinctive Indian teas accompanied by pastries from India, Russia and Europe.’ The Master & Margarita is due to open on October 1st to a fanfare of mischief and mayhem. True to Life? New Photography from the Middle East Until the 2 November @ Birmingham Museum,
LUKE CELEBRITY GOLF DAY
Comprised of stunning photographs by Middle Eastern artists, this exhibition at Birmingham Museum encourages its audience to look beyond the photograph in front of them. Exploring important social topics such as migration and the representation of women, the exhibition features both major names within the industry as well as emerging artists, all of which strive to challenge the way we interpret modern photography. www.bmag.org.uk

Cats 9-27 September @ Birmingham Hippodrome The Midlands warmly welcomes Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash-hit musical to the Birmingham Hippodrome this September. This legendary musical, renowned for it’s stunning choreography and striking costumes, is full of enthralling magic, inspiring dance and enchanting music including classics such as ‘Mr Mistoffeelees’ and ‘Memories’ A frequent favourite on the West End as well as a Laurence Olivier Award winner, Cats is a musical you need to see at least once. www.birminghamhippodrome.com
The RBSA hosts a multitude of local artists in their Secret Garden Craft exhibition – an event that showcases delicate collections of jewellery, ceramics, and textiles as exhibitors create a ‘magical hideaway’ within Birmingham’s Royal Art Society. Instilling a sense of otherworldliness to the streets of Birmingham, the Secret Garden displays fairytale inspired pieces, as leading young metalworkers create unique pieces of jewellery whilst other artists produce ceramic creations that echo the exhibition’s overall theme. www.rbsa.org.uk
The event, brought by the West Midlands based designer men’s fashion line and held in aid of the Fashion & Textiles Children’s Trust, included two shot gun starts with famous faces on the course and in the bar including Will Mellor, Joe Swash, Dean Ashton, Matt Banahan, Craig Gardner, Lee Carsley, Joe Miller, Alan Halsall, Reverand and the Makers, Michael Gray, Dion Dublin and Terry Christian. A fantastic mix of people who certainly added to the days shenanigans, if not the golf! With the drinks flowing apres-golf and the party in full swing it was then time for the main event: the comedy spectacular. Omar Hamdi kicked off with his bouncy and hyperactive personality keeping the audience on their toes. Suzy Bennett, wearing her heart on her sleeve gave a performance of vulnerability that simply can’t be faked before the irrepressible Russell Kane hit the stage. With body parts flying everywhere and an electric feel to everything he did, Mr Kane rocked the crowd and left them gasping for more by the end! The party went on to No.1 Shakespeare Street in the heart of Stratford, which finished the day off in LUKE-style. A truly amazing event but the only problem now is…….’how will it be bettered next year? ISA changes mean more flexible tax-free saving Government changes to Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) have made tax-free saving even more appealing, as the recently introduced New ISA (NISA) offers an increased annual allowance.
be accessed until the child turns 18.
3. Can I combine my Cash and Stocks and Shares investments into a single NISA? Some providers will allow you to hold cash and stocks and shares within a single NISA. However, many savers choose to separate their Cash NISA and Stocks and Shares NISA between different providers. The NISA also allows for the movement of savings between Cash and Stocks and Shares NISAs at any point.
Savers opening a NISA can now save up to £15,000 a year tax-free, compared to the previous allowance of just £11,880 giving savers more flexibility as to how they choose to save. Currently not enough people are taking advantage of this tax-free saving opportunity, which effectively shelters savings from income and capital gains tax.
4. I reached the saving limit on my Cash ISA before 1st July 2014. My provider won’t allow me to make any additional savings. Is there anything I can do?
1. Should I choose a Cash NISA or a Stocks and Shares NISA for my savings? If you want to gain easy access to your savings, a Cash NISA may be the most suitable. Alternatively, if you do not need to access your savings for three to five years then a Stocks and Shares NISA may be more suitable, although savers need to be aware that their investment can potentially go down as well as up.
2. Is the Cash NISA limit different for savers under the age of 18? Savers aged between 16 and 18 can pay up to £15,000 into a Cash NISA for the tax year 201415, which ends on 5th April 2015, but cannot open a Stocks and Shares NISA until they are 18-years-old. They can also hold a Junior ISA, providing they do not have a Child Trust Fund, which offers an allowance of £4,000, but cannot
You could make additional savings by opening a Stocks and Shares NISA, as you can hold one Cash ISA and one Stocks and Shares ISA in a single tax year, providing the combined total contribution does not exceed £15,000. Alternatively, you could consider transferring an existing Cash ISA to a provider that allows for additional savings to be made.
5. Can I transfer my savings between Cash and Stocks and Shares? Yes, it is possible to transfer between Cash and Stocks and Shares NISAs as many times as you choose.
Before making any financial investments we would recommend consulting your Financial Adviser.

JLR EXPAND A New Jaguar Landrover Centre
is set to open near Coventry,
From January 2015, a refrigerant, commonly known as R22, will become illegal as part of environmental regulations handed down by the European Commission. R22 is part of the CFC family of chemicals, many of which were outlawed in the 1990s. But the ban has far reaching implications for business owners who air condition their premises. It means that from January it is illegal to refill, stockpile R22 or repair equipment that uses the refrigerant. Darren Webb, from the Glenfield Group who specialise in maintaining and installing air conditioning for commercial and domestic use, commented “I think many businesses will be caught out by the legislation. Anyone who has older air conditioning systems or units will be faced with a big bill when their equipment inevitably breaks down or needs refilling, which normally happens during the hottest part of the year. At that point, it will be illegal to repair or top-up systems, and any companies that are reliant on refrigeration to operate will have no choice but to buy a whole new system or potentially lose thousands in operating costs. ” Darren advises business owners to have a consultation before it is too late: “Many people won’t even know how old their air con units are and will be unaware of the legislation. So we would recommend having a consultation now so that any necessary spend can be built into next year’s budget.” The Glenfield Group provide air conditioning to both commercial and domestic premises, with an emphasis on stylish/ invisible systems. Refcom accredited, The Glenfield Group can provide an official R22 Phase Out consultation.

WHY CAN’T I LOSE WEIGHT? So losing weight is difficult, yes? Most of us fail or ‘self sabotage’ (deliberately giving up before we fail for real) in the first few weeks, but if we knew how long it would take us to break all those bad eating habits would it help us? Dluxe talks to Janet Thomson Msc, author, broadcaster and fitness guru, and mastermind of the new life coaching approach to weightloss from Champneys, EasySlim. Q: We all hear so much puff around losing weight it is sometimes difficult to separate the fact from the fiction, what makes EasySlim different? A: This is no ‘miracle cure’ – this is a carefully structured programme of nutrition that you would see in most programmes, however the difference with Easy Slim is that we identify the underlying reasons for being overweight. Is it boredom eating? Is it low self-esteem? Or something deeper? It is the first programme to consider not just what you should eat and how much, but also how to change your mind so that you genuinely want to eat those foods, or eat less. Most people know what to do to lose weight, they just don’t know how to do it and programme teaches you exactly that. Q: Ok that sounds like it could get deep? A: It doesn’t always get deep! Some people sail through, however many do find that it’s an opportunity to change not just how they think and feel about food, but themselves generally. This is a life coaching approach to weightloss – we treat the entire person not just what it says on the scales. It can be hard to face up to some of the truths we unearth and take responsibility for your actions and your weight – many people make excuses or blame something else but the truth is you’re overweight because you over eat, and only you can control that. The programme can change you, your attitude and your waistline.
“IT’S AMAZING WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN PEOPLE MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO CHANGE” Q: I think we could all do with a bit of that. What exactly do we have to do? (And does it involve starving yourself?) A: We use a range of scientifically proven techniques designed to help you understand how your brain works, and how to literally change your mind. These include powerful visualisations, changing internal dialogue and different forms of positive self suggestions; from this you can learn how to undo a lifetime of bad habits and poor decision-making in a four week period. That is how long it takes to create a new pathway in your brain forming a habit or instinct. It’s like learning to drive; at first you have to think about everything clutch control, changing gear, looking in the mirrors – but after a while it becomes second nature, this is when it becomes a habit.
Q: So can t h e s e techniques be used for more than just weightloss? A: Absolutely - it applies to many different areas of your life – and many of the people on whom this system was trialled saw huge benefits in other ways, including better jobs and new relationships. It’s amazing what can happen when people make the commitment to change. It is so much easier to stay as you are and not take the risk. How many of us choose to remain unhappy in ourselves rather than take the risk of improving our lot? This is a lifestyle change – the course includes books, audios and plans to keep you on track and provide support along the way. The fiveday course is just the beginning of a whole new you.

THE PROOF IS IN NOT-HAVING-THE PUDDING! Well, the proof is in the not-having-the pudding, so I gave it a go. I had got into some bad habits on returning home from work, laying into the crisps and the wine before dinner, which wasn’t helping my attempts to shed a few pounds, says Caroline Spence. Firstly, I changed my thought processes and identified the problem. Using a free online food diary app, I recorded what I ate and when, then looked at the calorie count. Yes it was that post-work snacking, in what otherwise was a fairly healthy diet. So I went cold turkey – no wine or crisps for a month, including weekends. It wasn’t easy but I did it, and what do you know? The habit is broken – my consumption of wine and crisps has dropped by over two-thirds, losing with it over 2000 empty calories a week. On the positive side, I have more energy and I get more done, so my life seems more manageable, I feel happier so there are fewer nights on the sofa bingeing on crisps and wine. RESULT!
