EDITOR’S LETTER. Whilst many of us are bemoaning the fact that Christmas is just around the corner – how quick did the summer go, btw!! – Birmingham is looking beyond Santa to secure the Commonwealth Games in 2022 – and it’s looking like we have a fighting chance, having seen off Liverpool as the UK Candidate City. Birmingham winning the Games would be gold. It would be transformational and a very clear indication just how ‘open for business’ Birmingham is – on an international stage. We have the world-class sport and athletics facilities already and, it seems, we have the appetite to get this past the finish line. That said, it won’t be a walk in the park, as we must further upgrade the transport network and create an athletes’ village, amongst other things – which’d mean large-scale disruption over the next few years, but worth it for generations to come, surely. I, for one, will be keeping my fingers crossed over the coming months.
a stick at – from Rihanna’s Fenty at Harvey Nichols, Heals and Made.com at Mailbox’s new homewares, plus some top-secret superbrands hitting Selfridges in Bullring that are genuinely exciting for the city and should maintain our retail ranking. Whatsmore, this Autumn edition is also our sixth anniversary edition, which we’re hugely proud of. It’s a privilege to be a part of the Birmingham scene and reporting back to you on the very best bits each season. This time around, check out our interview with Ria Jones – the former understudy to Glenn Close who became the Leading Lady; Love Island’s Caroline Flack as well as the inimitable Sparks. We bring you our top fashion picks for the new season – for him and her; our what’s on guide to keep you culturally informed and lots, lots more. We look forward to catching up late November for our final edition of 2017. Keep well,
In the meantime, life goes on at a pace and this coming Autumn season is no exception. If you need a culture fix, try Sunset Boulevard at Birmingham Hippodrome, or Nativity! The Musical at The REP; if it’s retail, there’s more exclusives arriving than you can shake

BIRMINGHAM ROLLS OUT THE RED CARPET FOR CELEBRITY CLINIC
EF MEDISPA is one of the UK's first medical spas and leading skin clinics – providing cutting edge, innovative face and body treatments to celebrities and royalty alike. Now Birmingham is getting in on the action, with the first Midlands clinic now open in Edgbaston. Launched back in 2006, EF MEDISPA – which also has clinics in Chelsea, Kensington, St John’s Wood and Bristol – has a trophy cabinet full of industry and consumer awards, thanks to the dedication and experience of founder, Esther Fieldgrass. Ensuring each clinic boasts the latest technologies and innovations, Esther has created a medispa brand that is dedicated to client-centered quality, results and innovation. So, what does this actually mean for you? Well, there is a treatment menu packed full of unique therapies that fight fat, remove wrinkles, illuminate skin, and even combat the common cold and hangovers. We’ve had a first look at some of the treatments and here are our top picks.
BR FACIALS
Unique to EF MEDISPA, you won’t find this anywhere else in the city; these bespoke facials are delivered using acclaimed French skincare brand, Biologique Recherche. With special techniques to prepare, stimulate and oxygenate the skin, the unique BR application technique uses the sculpting movement; effectively combined with quick pulsing strokes, it gives a lifting and restructuring element to this treatment. This is a favourite with the likes of Diane Von Furstenberg, the Olsen twins, and Kim Kardashian.
3D SKINLIFT
This high intensity focused ultrasound – ‘HIFU’ to those in the know – has amazing lifting, firming and smoothing results that help combat the ageing of skin. A non-invasive treatment, this can help with sagging skin without the need for any nips, tucks or snips by creating a coagulating effect in the lower layers of the skin that regenerates collagen and sees immediate tightening results.
MICRONEEDLING
A treatment loved by Angelina Jolie and Naomi Watts, microneedling is one of the EF MEDISPA firm favourites. A series of tiny needles deliver a direct hit of intense vitamins and minerals to the lower layers of the skin in order to stimulate new cell growth and encourage the production of collagen, helping to reduce acne scars and stretchmarks. 12 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
REDUCE
EF MEDISPA Edgbaston will also have a celeb secret weapon for wiping out another common complaint; fat. Using non-surgical body contouring technology, the ‘Reduce’ treatment uses radiofrequency energy to break down fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissue. Whether it’s your stomach, thighs, hips, or bum, the treatment promises to help you tone up without you having to step foot on a treadmill.
DRIP AND CHILL
With intravenous drips made famous by Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne, and Rihanna, EF MEDISPA Edgbaston will be home to the city’s first Drip and Chill™ Lounge; prescribing a bespoke blend of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in the form of an IV Drip Infusion depending on your needs. They can tackle everything from stress and depleted energy levels to the common cold and hangovers.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Not just your standard laser hair removal, the Edgbaston clinic has the latest technology in this field. Where previous tech only worked on intense contrast, giving results to dark hair on light skin, this brand new machine is a lot more inclusive. Treatments will work on darker skin tones and fairer hair, making hair removal even more accessible. EF MEDISPA’s repertoire of award-winning therapies cannot be found anywhere else in the region – bringing not just celebrity favourites but treatments that really do work! The new Edgbaston clinic will be located at 11 Greenfield Crescent, bringing with it a host of innovative, intelligent treatments to the city.
WIN!
What’s more, we’re giving you the chance to bag yourself £500 worth of treatments – all you have to do is head to www.efmedispa.com/competition and you could win!
Book a course of treatments up to the value of £2,000 until the end of October and receive a free weekend break in Europe! T&Cs apply. To find out more about EF MEDISPA Edgbaston, visit www.efmedispa.com/birmingham-edgbaston and book your consultation today!

Johnsons Jewellers CELEBRATE A DOUBLE DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY As part of the 120 year anniversary celebrations, they hope to put on an exhibition display in store of old boxes, receipts or anything else that may be found. “We often have elderly customers who come in to store to say that they still have the ‘Wedding spoons’ that were given to them when they purchased wedding rings from my Grandfather ” says Libby. “ Things like this are great memoirs and it’s amazing to think that we have helped create lots of memories through the generations in the local community and beyond.”
Established in 1897, this year Johnsons Jewellers will be celebrating 120 years of selling watches and fine jewellery. Originally set up in the Abbey Green area of Nuneaton before moving to its present location shortly after the war, Johnsons was officially set up by Harold Johnson although records suggest that there were watchmakers in the family prior to this time. Today the business is a far cry from the small shop set up in the front room of the Johnson household and has been expanded over time to include 17 watch brands from some of the finest watch houses around the globe, plus a wealth of diamond jewellery. Johnsons Jewellers still remains firmly in the hands of the Johnson family. Robert and Pam are still actively involved in the business, with Libby and Catherine their daughters, being mentored to slowly take the helm for the next generation. 16 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Johnsons Jewellers sells a wide range of jewellery and watches suitable for all age groups and tastes. Silver branded jewellery includes the popular Swarovski, Thomas Sabo, Carat* and Hot Diamonds. With a large selection of diamond rings sourced from all over the world, from classic certificated single stone diamond rings to beautiful fancy shape cluster rings, the choice is vast. With a dedicated Rolex boutique to showcase the beautiful Swiss watch collection, the Johnsons Jewellers staff are fully trained to provide exceptional service in a relaxed environment. The selection of watch brands available range from fashion brands such as Emporio Armani and Hugo Boss, through to fine Swiss watch brands Omega, Tudor, Breitling, Longines and TAG Heuer. AGENDA.
Solihull’S MELL SQUARE Sees Launch of Everyman Barbers
One of the region's fastest growing chain of barbers is delighted to be opening in Solihull. Everyman - the 'home of the modern man', where customers are offered a free beer, the use of a PlayStation, and Sky Sports, while they wait for their haircut and grooming - already has successful salons in Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, and Derby in the Midlands, and another in Bristol. But opening a salon in Solihull has been high on the agenda of Managing Director Noel Gilronan, who runs the company with his wife, Julie. It will be situated in Mell Square, in the town centre, and the Grand Opening is September 28, when visitors and passers-by will be welcome to pop by and stop by to join in the celebrations.
"We have webcams so customers can check how busy we are before they head over to us, we've Sky Sports, PlayStations, the internet - and we're also licensed to offer our customers a complimentary beer, on us, if they fancy it, or maybe a bottle of water, or a cup of tea or coffee if that's what they prefer. "We also stock a vast range of first class professional products, which add the final touches to an equally first-class experience." After Solihull, the Everyman brand will be spreading its wings further North, with another salon opening in Manchester later this year.
"We live just outside Solihull, and Julie was born and bred in the town, so opening an Everyman barbers on our own doorstep, so to speak, has been high up on our wish list for a long time," said Mr Gilronan. "As the Everyman brand has grown, and built up a flourishing reputation as a great place for men to go for a haircut and groom, Solihull seemed an obvious place for us - it's a busy, thriving and lively environment, which totally reflects the Everyman image." Mr Gilronan said the appeal of an Everyman salon was the 'consistently high standard of the haircuts', customer banter with the barbers, and that they cater at all times for individual requirements of style and grooming. He said: "We've kept many elements of a traditional barber shop, but we've modernised certain aspects to suit the needs of today's men. We look after our customers from the moment they walk through the door, and make their visit an enjoyable experience. 20 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

LAND AND NEW HOMES
SPOTLIGHT.
ready for her close up Ria Jones received standing ovations for the role of Norma Desmond in the West End production of Sunset Boulevard at the London Coliseum in what has become the embodiment of the fairy tale journey of understudy to star. So impressed with her performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s a compelling story of romance and obsession, that plans for a tour with Jones in the lead of a new production directed by Nikolai Foster were immediately put into place. With rehearsals well under way, dluxe’s Jon Fraser caught up with Ria ahead of the show’s run at the Birmingham Hippodrome from 13-18 November. 22 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded, silent-screen goddess, Norma Desmond, lives in a fantasy world. Impoverished screen writer, Joe Gillis, on the run from debt collectors, stumbles into her reclusive world. Persuaded to work on Norma’s ‘masterpiece’, a film script that she believes will put her back in front of the cameras, he is seduced by her and her luxurious lifestyle before becoming entrapped in a claustrophobic world be-fore his love for another woman leads him to try and break free with dramatic consequences... It’s so lovely to talk to you today. What scenes are you rehearsing today? We have been rehearsing the Paramount scenes including the song As If We Never Said Goodbye. There are two really big solos; With One Look in the first act and As If We Never Said Goodbye in the second. They’re my favourite scenes, they’re so theatrical, and I just love them. That scene especially, when Norma goes back to the Paramount Studios is almost like the climax of the whole show, the build up to that scene is quite immense. You’ve had a very long association with the show haven’t you? Yes I have. 26 years ago now I did the very first workshop of it, the very first showing of the score and script in front of agents, friends, producers at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s home. I joked with him one day during rehearsals, because he was wishing I was older, and I said oh never mind one day I’ll do the revival. Then jump forward 25 years to last year and there I was just about to walk on stage at the Coliseum, which was incredible. Andrew was in New York at the time but he sent me a beautiful message, a voicemail that I will forever treasure. I’ve still got the original letter from him after the workshop thanking me for bringing Norma Desmond to life. It’s very special. I have to confess that when I heard you were taking the part of Norma in the tour I was very excited as I was lucky enough to see you when you understudied for Glenn Close at the Coliseum. Really? Yes I was there on the Friday and the response from the audience to your performance was absolutely phenomenal. To receive such rapturous applause and s standing ovation must have been fantastic. It was incredible because at the beginning there was booing and shouts for their money back. When I walked on stage I could see about 10 of my friends in the audience and they started the applause as I walked on. And at the end of With One Look which is the first song she sings, the audience just went crazy, you know the whole theatre and they just kept cheering and cheering and I thought I’ve got to break this at some point. As much as I’m loving every minute of it, I’m going to have to break it. They all came on the journey with me which was wonderful. I will never forget it as long as I live. I have a lot of it filmed and it’s always there for me to remind myself every now and then what a wonderful time it was. It did really feel as an audience member like you were watching something quite important happening, history and headlines being made. Did get a lot of attention afterwards? Oh my gosh, loads and I could have got a lot more but I was also aware of the fact Glenn was poorly, so it was bittersweet really. She was ill, bless her and that is why I went on. I didn’t want to jump on the bandwagon and I had to be careful. It was lovely and I think I did just the right amount of interviews and the amount of press. With social media it just went crazy
and I’m still getting messages, emails and people are coming back to see me on tour that saw me at the Coliseum. You can wait a lifetime for the right role to come along and I feel as though I have waited a lifetime but at least I’ve got this opportunity. There are so many spinetingling moments in the show aren’t there? A Perfect Year was a highlight for me, a song that was a big hit in the pop charts as well.
“You can wait a lifetime for the right role to come along and I feel as though I have waited a lifetime but at least I’ve got this opportunity”
Yes it was, and that’s a duet in the show. Another big moment is With One Look and I also love the Greatest Star of All and Danny Mac singing Sunset Boulevard is another great moment. We’re all enjoying creating this beautiful piece of theatre and Nikolai Foster is just an amazing director. His vision is everything I hoped for and more. Adrian Kirk the Musical Director is wonderful too and the design is stunning, I saw my costumes the other day and they were really everything I hope they would be. What can audiences expect to see differently from this show that they saw at the Colosseum? Is it quite faithful to that or is Nikolai putting a different take on it? Nikolai is putting his take on it but this is the first fully staged production since 2002. I think 2002 is the last time it was fully staged with an orchestra in the pit as opposed to on stage. With all the technical advances we have nowadays with the computers and mixing film with theatre, which this show lends itself to so well, it’s so exciting so they can expect some stunning visual moments as well as the sound of it all. Do you think there are still Norma Desmonds out there in today’s theatre and TV worlds? Well they always say that there aren’t enough roles for older women in Hollywood so I suppose things haven’t really changed. When the talkies came in the actors were just pushed aside and Norma was the biggest star of them all. Hollywood moves so fast. You’re only as good as your last movie I guess and that’s still the case today. Of course the show is all about feelings, emotions, love and aging.
It’s a story I think that everyone can identify with on so many levels. Especially actresses like myself, I’m sort of the age that Norma is in the script so I feel that I’m at the right point in my career and in my life with life experience behind me that I can bring that to this whereas 10 odd years ago I didn’t. I was going to ask what would be your dream role but these seems pretty much it. This is my dream role to be honest, the only other one I would want to sink my teeth into is Mama Rose in Gypsy or I’d love to take on the role of Mame but we shall see. www.birminghamhippodrome.com dluxe-magazine.co.uk 23

INVESTMENT DRESSING
Less is definitely more when it comes to creating the perfect wardrobe – spend less on the throw-away pieces and more on the classics that will last you season after season. LISA PIDDINGTON, from Harvey Nichols Birmingham, reveals how dressing smart for AW17 will last you for years.
2
4
Carrie Bradshaw famously quipped "I like my money right where I can see it... hanging in my closet." And as a woman who spent more than £40,000 on shoes alone, the Sex & The City heroine certainly knew a thing or two about investment dressing.
5
In an ideal world, we’d all have a wardrobe to rival the one belonging to Sarah Jessica Parker’s fictional character – handpicked Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos punctuated with Fendi bags and Prada dresses. However, in reality, with clothes being more readily available and more inexpensive than ever before, the temptation is dress cheap rather than well. 8
6
However, the savvy fashionista knows that spending her hard earned cash on a few cleverly chosen pieces each season – rather than a scattergun approach to throw-away style – is a far wiser investment.

fabric of choice for the investment shopper and this Joseph coat, £795, is as luxurious as it is totally transitional.

and luxury is the Alexander McQueen Heroine tote, £1,990; guaranteed to get envious stares from the fashion pack for a long time to come.

4: The killer heels: Take your cue from Carrie
and shell out on a stunning pair of high heeled sandals – these Manolo Blahnik feather sandals, £645, were made to be swooned at.

DESIGN CLASSICS
TO INVEST IN With the growth of fast fashion, many of us have found it difficult to justify paying out thousands on designer items however there are certain items that make sense to save up for and keep in your wardrobe forever writes stylist Cleo Lacey. Here’s her five picks of designer pieces that will never go out of style. Best get spending…
1. The Burberry Trench Coat will last for years. Got for Camel as it goes with everything and will never go out of style. The amount I find in clients closets that they’ve literally had for years, and I mean years! Try discount outlets such as Bicester Village to try and get a saving. 2. Louis Vuitton Classic Monogram. Go for an iconic style such as the speedy or Neverfull as they are the perfect tote for work, travel or daily use. Louis Vuitton luggage is also a fail safe investment and an incredibly chic and stylish way to travel with vintage pieces selling for more than brand new ones. 3. A Hermes Scarf, Birkin Bag or Belt. Three fail safe classical investments that every dream wardrobe should have. Go for the silk Hermes scarf in their signature orange colour to add a little pop of luxury to any outfit. With regards to the Birkin bag, yes they are a fortune but luxury online retail platform Baghunter claims that they make a better investment than gold! Unlike stocks and sharesthe value of the Birkin handbags has never decreased, even during times of recession and economic difficulty. The Birkin bag is the safest and least volatile investment market. Show that to your husband! If the bag is still way out of your reach then opt for the Hermes classic “H” buckle belt. I have had my black and tan reversible one for over 8 years, I wear it so much and could sell it now for pretty much what I paid for it even in a used condition. 4. A Quilted Chanel Bag, like the Birkin, will only ever increase in value and if you take good care of them you’ll be able to resell them for a good price. I would personally go for the classic quilted 2.55 with a gold chain in black or cream. Breakfast at Tiffany’s eat your heart out! 5. Cartier Love Bangle is definitely on my wish list. You can’t get much better than a red and gold box! A timeless tribute to a passionate romance (it is fastened only by your love using a special screwdriver) designed to be worn for the rest of your life. It will age gracefully with you and become an heirloom for future generations. If you so happen to part with the man with the screwdriver, then you can still sell them at extremely good prices.! .Your Fairy Clothes Mother xx 30 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

STYLIST’S CHOICE: CAPSULE FASHION
White T-shirt
The white t-shirt is the most versatile piece you should own. You can wear it with anything, having it act as a blank canvas to do what you want with. It’s a super-chic and simple option and will not date like graphic t-shirts. Try V-necks as well as crew necks for varieties sake.

According to the fashion industry, every man buys 46 new pieces of clothing every year. We’ve become obsessed with fast fashion; trendy disposable clothes at cheap prices but are we looking any better for it? Dluxe Magazines men’s style correspondent Pablo Collelo thinks that less is more… The idea of a capsule wardrobe has been around since the 1970’s, when a London boutique owner coined the phrase. This small collection of clothing is put together with the main purpose of reducing choice overload of owning too many clothing items by building an intentional, versatile clothing collection of a specific size. When we talk about a capsule wardrobe we are talking about a minimalist, streamlined approach to personal style where, ideally, every item contained within can work together, and looks for different occasions can be built within minutes. Most men, wanting to dressing better, think they need all their clothes to stand out but generally I like to keep the colour palette fairly neutral – blacks, blues, greys and whites. This is not only because neutrals tend to pair easily with one another, allowing you to maximise every item, but also because matching pieces is easier when there aren’t too many competing colours in it. While each man’s capsule wardrobe will differ, this list is a good starting point to give you an idea of what yours should look like. Although not included below in detail, also consider grey wool trousers, preferably in dark grey, polo shirts in white or grey and white trainers – to go from office to bar. Leather Loafers Harvey Nichols £345
Indigo jeans Harvey Nichols £120
If there’s one pair of jeans every man should have in his wardrobe, it’s the dark blue kind. They’re timeless, versatile and the longer you wear them the better they look. For a smart-casual affair, strike the balance between dressed up and dressed down, opting for a slim or skinny fit with a plain white or black t-shirt layered with a shirt if you want to keep things casual.

Go to men’s underwear label Hom have released an Autumn / Winter 2017 collection that takes classic prints to a whole new level across three principle themes. First off, an ‘organic’ trend, inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, features jungle and floral prints. Graphic design, architecture and geometric repeats make up the second key trend line and lastly, in tribute to the brand’s founder Charles Belpaume’s words from 1968, “There’s no reason why men can’t wear elegant underwear”, the third theme follows an elegant take on the theme of Marseille, where the brand was born. The Temptation line, pictured above, sits beneath the mantle of art deco and employs flattering cuts for a sculpted silhouette and is, unusually for a men’s line, beautifully-finished with lace and transparent detailing. Despite its delicacy it’s a look that avoids being feminine employing a more constructed couture feel. WANT TO ACHIEVE A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN NEXT SPRING? THE TRICK IS TO START PLANNING NOw... To achieve a sea of colour next year, start planting crocuses and daffodils. Don’t worry about planting tulips just yet - it’s fine to leave them until a bit later say the horticultural team at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. To keep your garden looking magnificent, continue to dead head and feed your baskets, tubs and urns. Don’t forget the dahlias! New perennials can be planted, as the plants can put down new roots whilst the soil is still warm and there is more moisture around. Existing clumps can be split if required; if a clump has been undivided for three to four years, flowering quality may be decreasing – splitting the clump will renew its vigour. Whilst nobody wants to tempt fate, it’s time to start planning ahead for the autumn frosts. Tender perennials will need lifting, and cuttings can still be taken. Cannas and dahlias can be left until the first frost. New lawns or bare patches can be sown or turfed. Now is a good time to do so because the soil is warm and there is more moisture around. Your lawns won’t need much cutting this month, so the height of the cut can be raised and frequency reduced. Now is also a great time to scarify and aerate to improve your sward.
Plectranthus (coleus), Pelargonium (geranium) and Salvia can be propagated by cuttings now and will make a good-sized plant before the weather turns cold. For the best results, take cuttings from healthy and non-flowering stems. They should be about 10cm long and cut just below a node, which is the part of the stem from which one or more leaves emerge, often forming a slight swell. Once this has been done, remove the lower leaves to prevent them from rotting and pot into a free draining compost mix. We recommend 75% multipurpose compost and 25% sand, grit or perlite. Water when the compost is dry and place in a warm, shady place. In the vegetable patch, be sure to plant spring cabbages and harvest main crop potatoes. Leave any storage marrows, squashes and pumpkins on the plant as long as possible to ripen. Feeling motivated? Why not visit Birmingham Botanical Gardens for more inspiration. It’s a good time to be cutting deciduous hedges now. Evergreen hedges will also benefit from a final trim for the year. Sow green manures in empty areas in the vegetable patch to add nitrogen and vegetable matter to the soil when it is dug into the patch later.

PHUKET Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, renowned for white sand beaches, mountainous landscapes and tropical rainforests. Winter is the best time to visit with the weather still enjoying warm temperatures, low humidity and gentle breezes. The seas are particularly calmer at this time of year which is excellent for diving and snorkelling. The beaches of Koh Samui and Bang Tao are popular for water activities such as water-skiing and windsurfing. For beach seclusion, relax on the golden sands at Mai Khao, also home to a turtle nesting reserve. Take a boat trip to the idyllic Phang Nga Bay. Travel through caves and secret lagoons, where clusters of islands emerge from the jade sea. For lively bars and nightlife visit the nearby town of Patong, or attend the fun Patong Carnival in November. GAME CHANGER Jaguar’s game-changing Jaguar XE has, since its launch at the end of 2014, picked up more than 60 major global awards affirming it as the most advanced, efficient and refined sports saloon that Jaguar has ever produced. DLUXE delves beneath the bonnet to see what makes this big car purr.
The rear-drive XE is the only vehicle in its class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque; an extremely robust yet light structure which combined with double wishbone front suspension and an Integral Link rear axle, is fundamental to the XE’s innovative benchmark vehicle dynamics.
The Jaguar XE has redefined the concept of the sports saloon and is regarded as the driver’s car in its class thanks to its intuitive responsiveness and ease of control. The whole experience of driving, whether it’s a leisurely drive to the office or a spirited shepherding through winding country lanes, is a pleasurable one thanks, in no small part, to the XE’s rear wheel drive layout and lightweight contruction. It’s a testament to company founder Sir William Lyons’ vision: ‘The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive’.
The XE’s aluminium skin is formed around the fundamental principles of perfect proportions and aerodynamic efficiency and is the first model developed from Jaguar Land Rover’s new modular vehicle architecture. It’s the stiffest, most aerodynamic Jaguar saloon car ever built and it’s 2,835mm wheelbase and low seating position enable a streamlined profile- The XE has the lowest drag coefficient of any Jaguar yet – Cd 0.26.
46 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
From the strongly-sculpted bonnet to the streamlined, coupé-like profile, the
XE has a taut, muscular appearance. The very steeply raked windscreen and the rising waistline accentuate the sense of movement with Jaguar’s signature ‘J-Blade’ running lights ensuring that the XE is another instantly recognisable Jaguar design. In the rear lights, a horizontal line intersecting a roundel is an iconic styling feature inherited from the iconic Jaguar E-type, and now present also on the F-TYPE sports car. Under the bonnet, buyers can choose from a range of powerplants including the efficient yet powerful new 300PS Ingenium petrol engine. This 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant produces 400Nm of torque for effortless acceleration powering the XE from 0-060mph in just 5.2 seconds. It also offers CO2 emissions as low as 157g/km and fuel economy up to 41.5mpg Inside there are leaps forward in
access to all features and functions including ome of the most advanced driver assistance systems available such as All Surface Progress Control (ASPC), developed through decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems, which can electronically gain traction in seconds and is ideal for use on low-grip surfaces, such as snow-covered roads. There’s also laser projection technology to enables the XE’s optional headup display (HUD) to generate sharp, high-contrast colour graphics on to the windscreen directly ahead of the driver, even in direct sunlight. The XE range starts at £28,295 for the entry level SE model which features standard equipment such as Satellite Navigation, cruise control, 17” alloy wheels, DAB digital radio and multifunction softgrain leather steering wheel, to the XE S, £48,045, the most performance-orientated XE model that features a race-inspired interior; heated, perforated Taurus leather seats; tread plates; and leather sports steering wheel carry the S logo. Dark hex aluminium graces the door finishers while the centre console is gloss black. The front bumper’s enlarged air intakes hint at the performance potential of the supercharged V6 engine. Side sill extensions, rear spoiler, gloss black rear valance, red brake calipers, Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED signature DRLs, and 19” alloy wheels complete the exterior.
quality compared to Jaguar’s of old with excellent quality materials and finishes. The spacious cabin cocoons front seat passengers with a deep centre console, creating a cockpit-like feel. The 8-inch touchscreen for the new InControl infotainment system takes centre stage in the sweeping curves of the instrument panel. On models equipped with automatic transmissions, Jaguar’s unique rotary drive selector rises up from the centre console – the XE feels alive. The contour-hugging front seats are mounted low, creating a sports-car like driving position with heating and cooling options and 14-way power adjustment. The rear seats may also be heated and can offer a 40:20:40 split-fold – a first for Jaguar – and a through-loading feature making it incredibly practical. Hey how was your summer? Did you pepper the cold, wet and miserable weather with good food, great wine, festival and cocktails. Well we did and I must say it was just the tonic to the pseudo summer we had! What you can be sure of is that the city’s restaurant sector has been growing and re-morphing at an alarming rate. Good in theory but nothing has a 100% success rate, so and it was sad to say goodbye to some big brands like Viva Brazil, and some small independents like Lobster Peninsula, Modu, Annexe and Two Cats. What does seem to go from strength to strength is Indian food. Big names behind NRI and Mowgli are bound to help business but please do support local independents; Indico and Zindiya are flourishing and two more have just launched, Gateway To India on Broad Street and The Streatery. The team behind the successful streetfood pop-up ‘The Indian Rasoi’, have opened The Indian Streatery in the old Adam’s site on Bennetts Hill. It’s a unique dual concept- a dynamic grab and go lunchtime cafe for the city’s busy professionals and a sleek, relaxed eatery by night. You may have seen the self proclaimed original 'Chaat Specialists' at the popular Digbeth Dining Club, serving their version of the traditional chaat to the city's street food scene. Co-founder Meena Sharma has created three different types of Parantha in different colours! Red paranthas with a beetroot filling, yellow paranthas with lentils and a green paratha filled with spinach and fenugreek. Sounds fantastic. The other Indian street food place is Mowgli brainchild of Celebrity YouTube Vlogger, Nisha Katona set to open next to John Lewis in Grand Central, this Autumn. Her dishes will be "real street food". That
After being completely gutted and rebuilt, the former James Brindley pub has been brought back to life this summer as The Canal House. After lying vacant for 8 years, the company behind The Botanist have created a 135 cover restaurant with three private dining rooms. The ground floor of the bar is described as ‘The Engine Room’ of the building - having a more down to earth pub feel while upstairs is named the Residency - with more floral touches to the decor and feeling distinctly lighter than downstairs. The food menu at The Canal House focused on the impressive rotisserie in the Canal House kitchen, with similar menu items to The Botanist. There is also an extensive wine list, more than 60 unique world ales, and the pub will also be distilling their own gin behind the bar. Somewhat surprisingly, an African themed grill serving springbok steak, ostrich rump and crocodile burgers has opened on John Bright Street. Called Nakira Bar and Grill, the decor includes Zulu shields and masks on the wall and safari animal decorations to reflect the African theme. The menu sounds interesting : Springbok steak is £24.75 while jerk chicken skewers served with chakalaka, a South African dish of spicy tomato, pepper and beans, is £11.95 and some familiar sides like Jollof rice, dumplings and rice and peas are sides. It also sounds pretty cool but I am not sure that alpacas, ostrich and crocodiles burgers are going to be that popular!
Things we are looking forward to this autumn…. Birmingham Flavour Fortnight, a whole two weeks devoted to the city’s booming food scene and around 30 top independent restaurants offering new menus and great deals. The Tequila Festival at The Rainbow Venues on October 7th and the Burgundy Wine Dinner at Hotel du Vin on October 20th. Plus super sexy new brands coming to the city including Fumo coming to Selfridges’ balcony, The Ivy and Cuba de Revolucion at St Philips Square as well as Sabai Sabai’s fourth venue on Waterloo Street (in between Fumo and Cosy Club). cheese with polenta chip and pea puree accompanied by a glass of Hattingley Valley Rose 2013. Created by a husband and wife team in Hampshire, Hattingley Valley only use pesticides and herbicides when needed. With quarter finished glasses beginning to overtake us, our only red of the evening was presented to us accompanied by a trio of duck cooked three ways. Another wine from London Cru, the Gresham St Grenache, 2015 was made using grapes from ninety-year-old vines to create an elegant wine with a real depth of flavour. Aged vines mean less grapes and with only eight cases produced each year, the Gresham St Grenache was a real treat to taste. Having caught up on those unfinished glasses of wine around us it was on to dessert and with it a dessert wine. I’ve previously shied away from dessert wines but when drunk with custard tart and a miniature strawberry arctic roll, the iconic Nyetimber Demi Sec, from a wine estate originally recorded in the Doomsday Book, worked wonderfully well and didn’t seem sweet at all.
REVIEWED:
WINE TASTING DINNER AT HARVEY NICHOLS I don’t know much about wine. My choices tend to be dictated using a tried and tested criterion; is it flat or fizzy? If it’s flat then is it Sauvignon Blanc and under a tenner a bottle? If it’s fizzy then stop wasting time and just pour it. Like the rest of the UK, I love my bubbles. As a country we drank a third of all Prosecco made last year - I only claim to be responsible for half of that! – so, depending on how you look at it, I was perhaps the perfect or the worst choice from the dluxe office to attend an evening of wine education at Harvey Nichols’ rather smart in-store restaurant and bar writes Jonathan Fraser.
As English wineries are all relatively new, they’ve been able to employ the very latest in energy saving techniques and equipment making their produce the tipple of choice for the eco-conscious. See, I’m drinking my way to saving the planet. #superhero All of this is explained to our table of 12, seated family-style in Harvey Nichols’ private dining suite. The event is led by in-house wine specialist, Siofra; a lady with such warmth, knowledge and passion for her subject that it’s hard to not be drawn in. Already my wine choosing criteria is being expanded and we’ve not had the first course!
I’m already a big fan of the restaurant at Harvey Nichols but this was the first time that I’d be sitting down for a full-on dining experience here and although the Wine Shop at Harvey Nichols host regular wine tasting events, tonight was to be a bit special; seven courses accompanied by six wines – and English wines at that!
The menu was specifically created for the night with Siofra working with head chef, Mark Walsh. We start with Harvey Nichols’ own-label Sparkling English wine; it’s crisp, light, and appley. This was accompanied by an amuse bouche of homemade miniature crumpets with cream and raspberry jam and braised little gem lettuce leaves stuffed with truffled egg yolk, pancetta and slithered radish. Perfect for summer.
Even with my distinct lack of wine education, I know that the idea of English wine is an unusual one, yet wine specialist Siofra O’Brien explained that not only was it a growing industry in the country but, what these fledging vineyards and wine producers are selling is top-quality quaff. Production of wine in the UK began in the 1950s but it’s only over the last twenty years that it has really taken off. It’s sparkling wine that is really gaining ground with critics and consumers alike- it’s been beating the pants off traditional champagnes in blind tastings, so it’s little wonder that French champagne houses are buying land in England for grape growing.
It has to be said that at this point both my note taking and my ability to focus had started to falter, but I do remember we enjoyed a much-needed coffee and the round table discussion as to our favourite wines and surprises of the evening continued long after the plates and the last of the now empty glasses were cleared away. Despite the limitations as to my wine knowledge, I thoroughly enjoyed my evening of wine tasting and not only learnt a huge amount but enjoyed fabulous food and some truly wonderful wines. I would thoroughly recommend it. It was also a great way of meeting new, like-minded people. Harvey Nichols hosts regular wine tasting evenings including Wine Wednesdays where guests can sample two wines for free. Booking is essential. For details of the next wine tasting event and to book your place visit harveynichols.com
Being a non-fish eater, I skipped the smoke mackerel being enjoyed by my dining partners and instead enjoyed whipped brie, cucumber, rhubarb and mint pate with a glass of London Cru Albemarle St Albarino, 2015- soft and creamy with a definite peach overtone. Based in an old gin distillery, London Cru make half a dozen wines using grapes sourced from all around Europe and shipped to their UK works within eight to ten hours. Next to come out of the kitchen was a scrumptious tempura courgette flower stuffed with sundried tomato and goats dluxe-magazine.co.uk 51

LOVE Island’s CAROLINE FLACK PROVES SHE’S CRAZY FOR YOU Caroline Flack knows all about troubled romances after her 8-week stint presenting Love Island, the most watched and talked about show of the summer. The source of many a heated watercooler conversation, the show is all about relationships going wrong, or right. So it is fitting that she makes her theatrical debut playing Irene, a woman whose love life is also bumpy, in hit musical ‘Crazy For You’ “She’s strong. She knows what she wants. But there’s a vulnerability,” Flack tells me as we chat during rehearsals. “She gets hurt the whole way through, but she’s brilliantly defiant. She stays strong and doesn’t give up. She’s naughty as well. There’s definitely bits of Irene that are quite like me.”
make your professional theatre debut. It was her time on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in 2014, and the live tour, that reignited her ambition to perform on stage. It was an ambition she had held since childhood. When, as a teenager, she discovered that performing could be a career, she set her heart on it and studied for three years at Bodywork Company in Cambridge. “It’s the only real qualification I have,” she laughs.
“It wasn’t just a case of wanting to be on stage...”
‘Crazy For You’, which plays at Birmingham’s Hippodrome from the 24-28 October, is a joyful, romantic musical comedy packed with fantastic Gershwin songs. It’s the story of Bobby, a banker who longs to be a stage star. When he’s forced to foreclose on a failing theatre, he falls for the owner’s daughter who would want nothing to do with him if she knew who he was. Irene is the woman he leaves behind.
“It’s feel good and fun,” says Flack. “It’s a show the whole family can enjoy, but it’s got a very cool vibe to it too. It’s one of those shows where you will have a smile on your face the whole way through. I know, because I’ve seen the rehearsals. I think audiences will be blown away by the talent of the cast.” That cast, which includes ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ winner Tom Chambers and West End star Charlotte Wakefield, are indeed supremely talented. While the ‘triple threat’ performer – singer, dancer, actor – is considered the holy grail of musical theatre, ‘Crazy For You’, stars are quadruple threats. They also play their own instruments. “I’ve never been so in awe of a cast before,” Flack gushes. The show is a reunion of sorts for Flack and Chambers. Both won the BBC’s flagship Saturday evening dance competition and starred together when the show’s live version toured the country. When Flack talks about the ‘Casualty’ and ‘Holby City’ star, who built his stage reputation leading the casts of ‘Top Hat’ and ‘White Christmas’, she does so in terms that make him feel like a big brother. He looked after her, he supported her when she was nervous. He is, in fact, the ideal person to have around as you
Her ambition to perform on stage morphed into a presenting career when she started being offered jobs. From co-presenting Channel 4’s celebrity sports show ‘The Games’ in 2005, she moved to ‘Gladiators’, Saturday morning kids show ‘TMI’, ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here Now!’ and ‘The Xtra Factor’. They’re projects she clearly loved, but that eagerness to get back to the theatre was always lurking. Quite simply, she says, “I love the stage.”
“It wasn’t just a case of wanting to be on stage, it was wanting to be on stage but doing the right thing,” she explains. So why was this Watermill Theatre production of Crazy For You the show that brought her back to the theatre? The answer is that playing Irene gives her the opportunity to get to grips with a character rather than worrying about leading an entire show singlehandedly. It’s the chance to relearn her craft and refresh her memory of theatrical performance. And, in a show packed with glorious songs like I Got Rhythm and They Can’t Take That Away From Me, she has a fantastic solo number. “As soon as I head Naughty Baby,” she enthuses, “I thought ‘Yes, this is great.’” With Strictly, her success revolved around just two people. When she’s presenting, it’s often just Flack “on a sofa, chatting to someone”. With ‘Crazy For You’, “you’ve got 30 people all working together.” And she is relishing the team ethos that comes with being part of a musical production. The cast are even talking about getting her involved in the music side of the show. “Everyone says’ that they’re going to teach me something by the end of the tour. I am aiming for the drums.” So don’t be surprised if, by a later tour date, you see Flack with drumstick in hand, proving herself not just a bona fide musical theatre star, but a quadruple threat too. BUSINESS.

Pieces of business advice that never go out of fashion Summer time is easy in my wardrobe. It is shorts and shirts with flip flops or comfortable shoes topped off with a baseball hat. After all, I am American. When I sit back and look at people’s businesses as they prepare to retire or even to start spending less time in the business and more time for themselves, they are living in a “summer wardrobe” business. writes dluxe Birmingham & Solihull’s Business Editor Bart Dalton.
Analysing businesses is similar to building a wardrobe for all seasons. The simple things we need when we start in business are: 1. A pair of shorts and a pair of jeans: Having a product to sell and someone to do it. 2. A small collection of t-shirts: Simple budgets and financial goals. 3. Functional set of shoes for all occasions: Website and marketing materials. Steve Jobs and Peewee Herman have one outfit that they wore all the time. It made it so that they did not have to think about making the clothes match. It also made it so you couldn’t discern the nature of the meeting by the attire being appropriate to match the scenario. 62 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Your business might be set up for all seasons but let’s look at the things you need to add into the business closet. Here are the fun accessories to make sure that you can not only show up, but be noticed when it comes to this little soirée called success. 1. Hat and Sunglasses: You need to have some messages or communications that get you noticed and stand head and shoulders above the rest. Become a thought leader in your arena and make sure that people think of you first when it comes to the problems you solve. 2. Sport Jacket or an amazing handbag: This really gets back to having a 3-5 year plan for your business and the people involved in it. Do you have career paths mapped out for your top employees? Does everyone know how many clients or profit levels you want to achieve? The reason these are like a sport jacket or amazing hand bag is that they will be on show when it comes to how your business looks from the outside. It is also a great place to store lots of unnecessary stuff until you decide to have a clear out. 3. Healthier you: there is no substitute for this. Clothes look better on healthier people and so does business. No matter how great your business is or your superior intellect people are animals and make snap judgements that take some time to rebound from. Get your self sorted. It takes time but you will have fun doing it. Autumn (or Fall as we Yanks call it) is in full swing. The new year is barrelling down on us. It’s time to add to your business wardrobe and make sure you don’t have that same old tired look; there’s nothing worse than feeling classic yet looking dated.
Black Country business Gets ALL New Festival Sometimes even in a simple wardrobe you need to have an upgrade. Don’t let your jeans get thread bare, update your products and packages to match the type of client you are looking to attract.
Black Country business’ is gearing up for a new and dynamic two-week Festival that will head up the annual business calendar from 2018 with the inaugural Black Country Business Festival set to take place from 23rd April to 4th May 2018. It is set to bring the region’s business scene to life through a packed fortnight of events - all run by local organisations.
If you have had the same shirts, financial plans, then maybe it is time to make sure they fit properly to your current business physique instead of just adding on a Cost Of Living adjustment.
More than 100 business leaders joined the Black Country Chamber of Commerce – the driving force behind the Festival, at the launch at the Light House in Wolverhampton. They heard how the Business Festival will benefit Black Country businesses and showcase the region’s outstanding innovation, culture and commerce to ultimately attract investment from outside the Black Country.
Lastly do your shoes still fit comfortably and do they match the rest of your wardrobe. Website update? Make sure you and your team have a digital plan. If you don’t plan to add to your wardrobe make sure the items you have make you look as good as they can.
Adrian Wright, president of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce said, “The Business Festival will provide a stage for the Black Country to showcase the unparalleled opportunity that our economy has to offer. This is a growing region that has seen massive investment. New industries have established themselves and are growing and thriving because of this commitment to regeneration.

THE BUSiness of SHOW BUSINESS Head of Business Development at Birmingham Hippodrome, Judith Greenburgh, discusses mixing ‘business with showbusiness’ Tell us about your job at the Hippodrome? As Head of Business Development, I’m responsible for managing external corporate relationships here at the theatre. This principally includes looking after our three strands of Corporate Membership scheme, our Good Company Club, Associate and Performance Partners. We work with a number of individual Project Partners; businesses from across all sectors, whose support helps to raise funds for the work of Hippodrome CREATIVE out in the community. We also run a successful networking group called Leading Ladies which consists of a varied events programme from Champagne tasting to Salsa dance workshops. Birmingham Hippodrome is well-known for its world-class stage facilities but it’s also home to some of the city’s most versatile event spaces. Tell us more? We are so lucky here at the Hippodrome to have six unique spaces which are available for hire seven days a week during the day and evening. That, of course, includes our magnificent auditorium. The spaces on the Thorp Street side of the building have all recently been newly refurbished to state of the art spaces in which to hold events of any kind whether that be meetings, conferences, training sessions, workshops, networking, private receptions or dinners. The Hippodrome now offers offsite event management. How did that come about? I think it’s been a natural evolution from some of the large-scale corporate events that we’ve held in the building. Even our incredibly 64 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
spacious building has become too small as particular clients’ needs and ambitions have grown. The largest event we’ve delivered so far this year offsite was a Game of Thrones themed awards ceremony for 450 members of the Casual Dining Group, held in Digbeth. As you can imagine, we really went to town on the theatrical flair! We like to say here in-house, ‘if you can imagine it, we can create it’. After all, if we can help to make Chitty Chitty Bang Bang fly then the sky is really the limit for us! Do you have a typical ‘client’? I can’t say that we have a typical client other than, within any of the organisations that we work with, there’s at least an individual who has a complete passion for the theatre and who holds the Hippodrome in particular in high regard. I think, also, they tend to recognize that, both as individuals and as a team, we really always try to go the extra mile to ensure that the event and their time spent with us in the building is as memorable as possible. What’s been your proudest achievement over the last twelve months? I think, most recently, when we held our open day ‘The Greatest Show Around On Earth’, it was fantastic to welcome over 100 members of the corporate community into our building and to showcase our newly refurbished rooms. The Las Iguanas client event in Digbeth was also a real privilege to work on. For me, just having the opportunity to see what my incredible colleagues in Production and Catering were able to deliver was incredibly exciting. Feeling some additional pressure recently? You might just be a product of your environment. Consumer site Totallymoney.com looked at 16 stress-inducing factors across the country – such as finances, commute time, job opportunities and crime rates – to find the least and most-stressed towns and cities in the UK and it turns out that Birmingham is the UK’s second most stressed out! It may come as no surprise that London ranks as the UK’s most stressed city thanks to the longest average commute times, the UK’s most expensive homes and jobs which require the most overtime but with job growth of just 0.2%, some of the highest unemployment levels and workers expected to put in an average of 9 hours overtime per week, Birmingham is not far behind it.
TREETOP TEAMbuilding Center Parcs Conferences & Events has refreshed its popular teambuilding packages and launched a new activity-only package for businesses looking to use Center Parcs purely as a corporate retreat for their guests, rather than to host a meeting or conference. The new Exhilar8 package, priced at £65 including VAT at Sherwood, Elveden and Longleat, includes a choice of two leisure activities such as Aerial Tree Trekking, High Ropes Challenge, Laser Combat, Target Archery, Raft Building, Paintballing and Orienteering. The package also includes a sandwich ‘pack up’ style lunch.

LAST WORD. How does making a Sparks album differ from scoring a film, or a musical? Ron: In an album, it is a collection of 3 or 4-minute complete ideas, whereas in a film, an idea is developed over an hour and a half or two hours. We tend, though, to use cinematic themes and sounds in our songs and a Sparks sensibility in our film and musical work, so there is quite a bit of crossover. You’ve said that you find it frustrating that artists often play it safe and aren’t very adventurous. Which contemporary bands / musicians do you think are being bold with their music? Russell: I’m not sure that there’s someone out there risking it all on their latest work. At the start of your career you were drawn to the UK and it is where you had your first hit. What is it about the UK that appeals to you, and why do you think British music lovers are so drawn to you and your music?
SPARKS
Formed in 1972 in Los Angeles by Californian brothers Ron and Russell Mael known for their quirky approach to songwriting, Sparks’ music is renowned for its intelligent, sophisticated, and acerbic lyrics, and for the brothers idiosyncratic, theatrical stage presence which is typified in the contrast between Russell’s animated, hyperactive, falsetto frontman antics and Ron’s deadpan scowling. With the rare ability to blend worldwide chart success with a cult following, the band’s frequently changing styles- from rock gods to synth pop legends alongside a starkly individual and visual aesthetic have kept the band at the forefront of modern, artful pop music. Best known for the songs “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us”, which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1974; the disco hit “The Number One Song in Heaven” in 1979; Sparks are back with their twenty third studio album ‘Hippopotamus’ which sees the brothers take the pop form, shake it up, and create an album that is adventurous, fresh and idiosyncratically ‘Sparks’ – how many band lyrics reference Hieronymus Bosch, Titus Andronicus wearing a snorkel and a Germanic van? dluxe Magazine caught up with the brothers as they released second single Edith Piaf to find out where they draw their inspiration from, what audiences can expect from the tour and to find out which brother tells the best jokes… 66 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Where did the inspiration for the title track of your new album, ‘Hippopotamus’ come from? Ron: We had written the instrumental music for the song first and it needed a subject matter as idiosyncratic as the music. The word ‘Hippopotamus’ sounds cool and fit, and then it was working backwards and figuring out what happens in a song called ‘Hippopotamus’. Voila! With a vast catalogue of material to draw from, what can fans expect to hear on ‘The Hippopotamus Tour’? Russell: We will be doing an assortment of songs from out past albums as well as heavy emphasis on Hippopotamus. We are very proud of the new album and feel it’s a vital part of our catalogue and would love to share it with our fans. But yes, old songs as well! You have been creating art, music and film for a few decades now – how has your process changed over the years? Ron: Ideas are always the key and that never changes, but technology has allowed us new ways to make these ideas concrete. Musically we’re able to experiment more since we can record on our own, without worrying about time or budgetary constraints. Which Sparks record would you suggest a newcomer listens to first? Russell: They should start with our compilation box set call ‘New Music For Amnesiacs – The Essential Collection.’ This package is a perfect introduction to our career. It has songs from every album as well as a beautiful book documenting our career. And a bunch of assorted goodies thrown in as well. Highly recommended.
Ron: We can’t completely explain it. All we know is that we had 2 albums out in the states that had very limited following and after moving to London in late ’73, we had tremendous success with Kimono My House. We had always thought of ourselves as more of a British band than an American band stylistically, so I suppose that has something to do with it. However there does seem to be an openness to eccentricity in Britain. We’ve seen you perform with various set ups, from the stripped back ‘Two Hands One Mouth’ tour to performing at the Barbican with a 35-piece orchestra – what will you have in your musical bag of tricks this time? Ron: Just you Wait! In the meantime, we very much look forward to touring with a fantastic band on the Hippopotamus tour! If you could travel back in time to when you formed the band, and give yourselves one piece of advice, what would you say? Russell: Make sure you book aisle seats. Who tells the better jokes - Ron or Russell? Russell: See the previous answer. Obviously, Russell tells better jokes. Hippopotamus by Sparks is available to buy, stream or download now. Catch them live at Rock City, Nottingham on the 23rd September and Birmingham’s O2 Institute 1 on the 24th September. For tour tickets visit www.allsparks.com
