There are new shoots in the garden, sticky buds on the trees and the tantalising promise of lighter nights and warmer days. Yes, Spring is well and truly on its way – and long overdue it feels. Spring brings with it change and the promise of the new and that is certainly something that Birmingham is experiencing at the moment. In fact, this Spring heralds a year that will go down in history as the cityscape changes before our eyes each day. There’s never been a better time to be a Brummie. Inward investment is apparent across the city and every sector within, but it is the city’s retail sector that looks set for the greatest revolution. The Mailbox is on-track to introduce a whole new, high-end retail experience to the city, parts of which are already being presented, such as the Everyman Cinema, Gas Street Social and the multi-million pound refurbishment of Malmaison. Luxury retailer, Harvey Nichols – who you won’t fail to notice throughout this Spring edition – is gearing up to create a bigger, better and bolder retail offering a flagship experience unlike any other outside of London. That a retailer of this calibre is investing so heavily in the city is testament to their faith in the city – and us! And then there’s Grand Central and the John Lewis anchor store, which is set to be the most important store in the group outside of Oxford Street; the demolition and recreation of Paradise as well as significant works around Five Ways island as well as the imminent arrival of the city tram system and the city is truly living up to its Second City moniker. With such frenzied activity across fashion, beauty, grooming, bars and restaurants, the hardest part of my job is choosing what to feature as there really is an embarrassment of riches this season. Making the grade, we give you an overview of some of the season’s key fashion trends for men and women; we show you why you should be mad about Masala; we test drive the new TT, which, like Birmingham, has been repackaged and relaunched; and we bring you our cherry pick of the very best things to do and see.

FOODIE HEAVEN AT CANNON HILL PARK Foodies Festival, the UK’s biggest celebration of food and drink, transforms Cannon Hill Park into a foodie heaven from the 15,16,17th May with Birmingham’s Michelin-star and top chefs, new tasting theatres, pop-up restaurants and more street food than you can shake a satay stick at. The Aga Rangemaster Chefs Theatre welcomes Michelin-star chef Glynn Purnell and top local chefs Matt Cheal of Simpons and Atkar Islam of Lasan Group who will cook their favourite summer recipes and share top tips for visitors to take away and impress family and friends with at home. New foodie hotspot Birmingham can look forward to toasting Foodies’ 10th anniversary in the New Wine and Champagne Theatre, where experts Neil Phillips and Charles Metcalfe will guide visitors through this season’s best bubblies from the UK and around the world, while beer expert Melissa Cole hosts masterclasses in the New Craft Beer Theatre, matching foods with locally produced alcoholic and non-alcoholic craft beers. Get your motor FLYING THE FLAG FOR BIRMINGHAM running, head out to The search for a new flag for Birmingham has been launched. That’s why I’m launching a competition to create a people’s flag for Birmingham.” The ‘People’s Flag for Birmingham’ competition is free to enter and open to all. Whether you are young or old, amateur or professional, an individual or a group your design will be judged impartially and purely on merit, irrespective of artistic ability meaning that school children will have exactly the same chance as experienced designers. The deadline for entries is 31 March. Judges will then draw up a shortlist of five designs to put forward to a public vote from 11 May till 28 June. Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) has announced that the current King of the Jungle and seven times World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty will lead an expected 3,000 strong biker ride-out to officially kick-off the 5th Bike4Life Fest on Sunday 26 April. Carl is personally appealing for riders across the region to register and join him on the 23 mile motorbike procession from Shrewsbury to the RAF Museum Cosford near Wolverhampton, the prestigious home to the Bike4Life Festival – a major annual fundraising event in MAAC’s calendar. Last year more than 8,000 bikers, friends, family and enthusiasts from all across the UK took part in what has become one of the biggest and best biker events in the country. The event is partnered with RAF Museum Cosford and the Safer Roads Partnership to raise awareness of biker safety. With arena displays, stalls, exhibitions and biker tutorials, the Bike 4 Life Festival promises to be a great day out for bikers, families and the local community. Live music will be staged by radio station Planet Rock 105.2FM, showcasing the best in Midlands music talent.

Love Is Enough At Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery Love is Enough running from 25 April – 6 September 2015, brings together two major international artists for the first time – Andy Warhol and William Morris to explore and reveal their similar interests and ideas and parallels between their works. Warhol and Morris were both strongly committed to creating a more democratic context for art, through both the design and production of their work. The exhibition, curated by the artist Jeremy Deller, will bring together significant and iconic works by both artists from public and private collections including some rarely seen work. It will include archival material owned or made by both artists that sheds light on their influences and working practices. The exhibition will also be an opportunity for BMT to show its Holy Grail tapestries.

REVISITED WHEN TEXAS STARTED WORK ON THEIR NEW RECORD, THEY DIDN’T BEGIN BY WRITING SONGS – IN FACT, THEY PUT THEIR GUITARS TO ONE SIDE AND DUG OUT SOME OLD PHOTO ALBUMS. “25 YEARS ALREADY FELT LIKE A REALLY SIGNIFICANT ANNIVERSARY, BUT IT WAS ONLY WHEN WE LOOKED AT ALL THE OLD PHOTOS THAT THINGS FELT SO MUCH MORE REAL,” EXPLAINS SHARLEEN SPITERI, WHO FORMED TEXAS WHEN SHE WAS A 17-YEAROLD HAIRDRESSER WITH HER FRIEND JOHNNY MCELHONE. “With this album, we didn’t just want to make a Greatest Hits again - that can be a bit lazy!” the straight-talking Scottish singer laughs. “We wanted to document our history – 25 years, as a band, when you think about it, that’s like ‘woah!’ Also, it’s important, because there are really not that many femalefronted bands who make that.” Those photo albums – filled with snaps of Sharleen taken by world-famous photographers Ellen von Unwerth, Juergen Teller and Rankin, among others – inspired the band to completely revisit the most iconic songs from their discography. “We play these songs all the time, so now they just feel like part of my everyday life and routine,” explains Spiteri, but this anniversary prompted the musicians to listen to their tracks with ‘fresh ears’. As soon as they hit on this idea, Spiteri knew exactly who to call. “I’d already worked with the producers Truth and Soul on my solo album Melody, and I really loved the way that they put a record together,” she says. “I knew they would have a great approach to this album, because although our fans and people who know us have grown up with these songs, the Truth and Soul guys hadn’t heard them before we went into the studio with them. They wouldn’t know a Texas song if it hit them in the face! So when we played ‘I Don’t Want A Lover’ to them, it could have been a demo, for all they knew. They were coming to it completely fresh.”
The band worked with the producers in their Brooklyn, New York studio to rework their hits, and this collaborative process gave Spiteri a chance to re-hear the songs she has been performing for a quarter of a century. “The songs took on a whole new meaning for me, because we considered them so much more. Parts of the songs which might not have seemed so important suddenly became so poignant to me, I suppose because I was singing them with a whole new perspective now,” she reflects. Another contributing factor to Texas’ new approach was the involvement of new songwriting collaborators, Jack Townes and Karen Anne, who worked on the new single, ‘Start a Family’. “When we are all writing together, different parts of each song mean different things to each of us. And then that changes again when I sing the songs; when words come out of my mouth, they can mean something totally different again. It’s natural because I’m going to add my own emotion to them,” Spiteri says. She appears in the video for the track with actor Alan Rickman, who is a longtime Texas fan – and who previously danced the tango with Spiteri in the video for ‘In Demand’, back in 2000. The haunting single is a melancholy, contemplative track. Spiteri explains the thought process behind their new offering: “’Start a Family’, to me, is about choosing different paths. Even beginning the song with that line, ‘You can start a family/Or you can start a war’, sums it up, essentially. It is about all the different paths in life and the various choices you can make. I definitely consider personal choices to do with life and love with more experience now.” The singer will be sharing some of that wisdom and experience when Texas hit the road in April, for a UK tour with a difference. The interactive set up of ‘An Evening With Texas’ will give the audience the chance to pick the set list for each show, with Spiteri sharing stories and anecdotes between the songs. With 25 years’ worth of hits to choose from, the shows will be a true homage to Texas’ successful quarter century of making music together. As Spiteri puts it: “We’ve had a real ‘producer’ moment in music over the last year or so, with people like Pharrell Williams and Mark Ronson doing so well. With this album and tour, we really wanted to get back to songwriting, so that is exactly what this is: a celebration of songwriting.”

“I’M
ADVENTURER BEAR GRYLLS HAS EMBARKED ON MANY CHALLENGES THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF HIS LIFE, FROM CLIMBING MOUNT EVEREST A MERE 18 MONTHS AFTER BREAKING HIS BACK, TO SERVING FOR THREE YEARS AS A RESERVIST WITH THE SAS. However, his latest project may be his most daring yet, as he hosts Mission Survive, a new ITV show which features eight celebrities learning how to survive in the jungle. The cast includes Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall, double Olympic gold medalist Kelly Holmes, pop stars Jamelia and Max George, actors Emilia and Laurence Fox, comedian Tom Rosenthal, and model Vogue Williams. 40-year-old Grylls has embarked on a creative publicity campaign for the show, memorably smashing through the glass windows of _This Morning_ harnessed by a rope. The presenter is clearly proud of his new program, and describes the concept as “an empowering journey for people where some crumble, and some come alive.” Despite being on the same channel and featuring some similar aspects of ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, the differences are significant, with Grylls confirming that “even though we have celebrities and yes we’re in a jungle, this is I’m A Celebrity on steroids.” Celebrities are not treated with special care or sympathy on the show, and are mostly left to use their own initiative, which becomes tested when faced with difficult tasks including jumping out of helicopters and climbing down waterfalls, or even simply lighting a fire or finding shelter. Perhaps the most unique aspect of Mission Survive is the lack of an easily identifiable winner’s prize. This is because the idea of the series is intended to be, in Grylls’ own words, “about me trying to build the contestants into a hero, so that if my kids were there without me lost in the jungle I’d want those celebrities beside them.” This thought process is key for Grylls, who aimed for this to be not just a typical reality show, but one for people taking part 32 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

who want “the sense of achievement, that when pushed under pressure they have the steel that will drive people on.” One of the most demanding moments of the series occurs in episode two, when the celebrities are forced to drink a pint of their own urine. Grylls became notorious in his earlier career when he drank his own waste on television, and after years of survival training, there are not many items he won’t consume if it means staying alive. “I’ve learnt in survival to get over the grim stuff,” he admits. “If it’s good energy you need and your life is on the line you’ve got to put your prejudices aside and do it.” The removal of preconceptions is a key component for Mission Survive, and Grylls is quick to point out how Silent Witness actress Emilia Fox was “well prepared, driven and determined,” while explaining that despite the involvement of two world class athletes in the competition, “muscles, fitness and strength are not the only weapon in the survivor’s arsenal.” Despite the dangers of the show, including “somebody getting stung by bees and half drowning”, plus a hospital visit for Mike Tindall after he got hit on the head by a piece of wood, the physical nature of the show was not the hardest part for all involved. “I said to the celebrities at the beginning that you have to embrace failure,” remembers Grylls. “It’s so counter-culture for people, especially when you’re on TV to dare to fail, because you’ll look silly or vulnerable, but the heart of survival is embracing failure, to be resourceful and never give up until you get what you want,” he adds. Mission Survive is a rare anomaly in the world of terrestrial television, a show that despite the famous faces and the exotic location offers a more philosophical and human approach to competition, survival, and self-improvement.

The fourcylinder unit combines direct and indirect fuel injection for optimal combustion. Optimise your Fertility in 2015 If you or someone you know are planning to get pregnant this year, then it’s always a good idea to make sure that you’re in optimum health before you start trying: you will maximise your chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy to term. And even if you’re not actively thinking of getting pregnant, ensuring that your hormones are in balance will help you in any number of ways from having great skin to generally feeling good about yourself. Marje Isabelle, CEO of Fertile Matters, a fertility analysis service www.fertilematters.co.uk, offers us her advice. 1. Get tested. Ideally, you should get your fertility checked which will tell you what is going on inside your body. Armed with the facts, you can make appropriate changes to your diet and lifestyle or get medical help. Medical techniques have moved on considerably lately and now you can find out your fertility with just one appointment where you will have a scan and a blood test – the appointment can now be made at any time during the month. 2. Maintain an ideal weight – weight is one of the major issues with fertility problems, both being underweight and overweight. ‘We are our hormones’, and anything that sends them out of kilter affects egg health, egg production and ovulation. In addition it affects implantation, so a woman may be conceiving but having a very early miscarriage. 3. A healthy diet from a fertility point of view will have good levels of protein with low levels of fat and dairy. Again, nutrition affects our hormonal balance and therefore women who are deficient in various vitamins and nutrients will have a longer menstrual cycle, which means that they are ovulating less frequently. 4. It is easy to get your vitamin levels checked but generally speaking, the good things for women to top-up on are: Zinc, the B Vitamins, Folic Acid, Selenium, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Vitamin E and Vitamin C as well as ensuring that they are eating plenty of protein. And if you want to ensure your man is in tiptop condition, he will need Selenium, Coenzyme Q10, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Vitamin C and Zinc – but remember, it takes 3 months for the body to make new sperm, so dietary changes take a while to take effect. 5. Cut down on your alcohol and even better, don’t drink at all. Apart from often being a contributory factor in weight gain, it does affect your hormone levels – along with weight, alcohol consumption is one of the ‘Big Two’ lifestyle issues that are problematic for fertility. 44 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
6. Exercise (but not excessively). Doing regular exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle and is therefore good for fertility. However, extreme exercise which can lead to very low body fat percentages can affect the hormone balances and therefore adversely affect fertility. Gentle exercise is best – yoga is ideal and is also a good stress reducer, which leads me onto my next point… 7. Cut your stress levels as it is really bad for fertility! There are numerous studies that show that conception levels decrease when women are going through psychological stress. Stress produces the hormone cortisol which floods the body – it is the ‘fight or flight’ hormone and as we don’t do either of those things in the modern world, it can accumulate in the body leading to all sorts of issues. Stress can be responsible for the restriction of blood flow to the uterus which can affect conception, and cortisol has been linked to encouraging the accumulation of fat evident especially around a person’s waist, which again, can send hormones into flux. 8. Drug use – anything illegal is obviously a big no-no but also check with your doctor whether your medication could affect your chnages of getting pregnant. 9. Fertility Preservation - If you’re in your 30s and your life isn’t settled in terms of a partner, a stable home and so on, then consider having a conversation with a fertility expert about ‘fertility preservation’. Egg freezing has hit the headlines recently with Facebook and Apple offering this to their female staff – it’s a complex subject, but it’s worth considering sooner rather than later as the quality and number of eggs deteriorates with age. 10. Hormone Levels - If your hormones are in balance, your skin will glow, you will feel generally better physically and mentally and your overall health will benefit. Likewise women who are approaching menopause should have their levels checked, as it is now possible to manage that time much better and ensure that you feel vital (and sexy!) way beyond the menopause.
More than half (59%) of parents with children aged 4 to 16 in the Midlands have been pestered by their children to buy junk food they have seen advertised on TV, according to a new survey by the British Heart Foundation. The BHF polled over 2,100 UK parents with children aged 16 and under and found more than a third (37%) of parents surveyed with children aged 4 to 16 say they are badgered by their children at least once a week. Three in ten (30%) parents polled also said they think junk food adverts on TV make it difficult to help their children eat a healthy diet. The BHF believes that this survey highlights the urgent need to close legal loopholes in the UK’s regulatory system which mean companies are free to promote unhealthy food and drink products to children both online and on TV during popular family TV shows. The BHF is calling for the UK Government to introduce tighter restrictions online and ban junk food adverts being shown before the 9pm watershed to protect children from making unhealthy choices. Mike Hobday, Director of Policy at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Regulations for TV and online advertising in the UK are weak. Loopholes in the system mean that every day millions of children are exposed to sophisticated marketing techniques specifically designed to lure them into unhealthy eating habits. This evidence shows that junk food ads are having a detrimental impact on children’s behaviour and are hindering parents’ efforts to get their children to eat healthily. “We cannot allow companies to continue exploiting holes in the system at the expense of our children’s health. The Government must act now to help give children a stronger chance at fending off future heart disease.”

en Stay Tuned Stay Tuned – a partnership between Born to Be, Deutsche Bank’s youth engagement programme, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) -has ensured more than 29,000 children from schools across the West Midlands have experienced the thrill of live music since the partnership launched in 2012, through tailored concerts offered at heavily subsidised rates. Created in partnership with Deutsche Bank to educate and inspire Birmingham schoolchildren from 10 schools, who have had little or in some cases no access to music provision, a series of CBSO musician residencies have also been developed. Led by CBSO musicians alongside freelance creative music practitioners, each residency will include bespoke workshop content tailored to the needs of the school including shared concerts to enable pupils to showcase their talents and new skills. Schools taking part in the initiative include Aston Manor Academy, Bordesley Green Girls’ Business & Enterprise School, Golden Hillock School, Kings Heath Boys’ Mathematics & Computing College and Queensbridge School, Moseley. Born to Be, Deutsche Bank’s youth engagement programme, is the most significant supporter of the CBSO Schools Programme and fully funds Stay Tuned. It is part of Deutsche Bank’s commitment to help young people fulfil their potential through a number of projects which inspire. Now in the third year of the project, Deutsche Bank is also encouraging its employees to become involved with Stay Tuned as volunteers, assisting onsite at concerts or participating in workshops at schools. Military Preparation College laun ches in Birmingham Local VIPs, Armed Forces personnel and other guests gathered at Balaam Wood Academy in Frankley for the official launch of Birmingham’s new Military Preparation College (MPCT) – a specialist college for 1618 year olds interested in pursuing a career in the Armed Forces.

Guests of honour at the event included Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of West Midlands, Mr Paul Sabapathy CBE; the Deputy Commander for the Army in the West Midlands, Colonel Richard Maybery; and the MP for Birmingham Northfield, Mr Richard Burden. Visiting students from the Wrexham branch of the Military Preparation College treated guests to energetic demonstrations of drill marching, physical training and a team log race. Five students then showed off their public speaking skills in a learner presentation to all guests. The programme blends physical fitness training with vocational skills in a unique kind of ‘active learning’ approach. The average length of course is around 20 weeks before students are ready to either apply to the Armed Forces or progress into further education, training or employment. A GREAT WAY TO INTRODUCE MIDDLE EASTERN ZING TO A HEARTY MAIN COURSE THATS BURSTING WITH FLAVOUR. SERVES: 4 PREPARATION TIME: 10 MINUTES, COOKING TIME: 45 MINUTES YOU’LL NEED: for the tagine 1 tbsp vegetable oil 8 chicken thighs, skinless 4 echalion shallots, peeled and cut in half lengthways 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric 400ml chicken stock 6 tbsp Streamline apricot jam 400g chickpeas, tinned, drained salt and pepper to season to serve 150g couscous zest of a lemon 220g long stem broccoli small bunch of fresh coriander 2 tsp olive oil

WHAT TO DO: Preheat the oven to 180C/ 160Cfan/gas 4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large casserole dish until sizzling hot. Brown the chicken pieces on all sides. Once the chicken is browned, remove from the dish and set aside. You may need to do this in two batches if your casserole dish isn’t big enough. Turn the temperature down to a medium heat and put the shallots in the casserole dish with the lid on and cook for 5 minutes until they are coloured and starting to soften. Add the crushed garlic, all the spices and stir in. Pour in the stock, stirring well, then stir in the jam. Return the chicken to the dish and tip in the chickpeas, season well then stir to coat everything with the stock. Put the lid back on and cook in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and continue to cook for another 20 minutes until the chicken is cooked and the sauce has thickened. While the chicken is cooking, put the couscous in a bowl and stir in the lemon zest then continue to prepare as per the pack instructions. Steam the Tenderstem for a 3-4 minutes until tender. Once the couscous is ready, fluff with a fork and tip into a large serving bowl. Stir in the coriander, Tenderstem and olive oil and season to taste. Divide the couscous between 4 plates and top with the chicken tagine.

But it’s more than just new décor; the hotel bedrooms will benefit from vibrant and stylish new carpets and amazingly luxurious leather sleigh beds. It all adds up to an even more compelling excuse to never leave your hotel room! General Manager Tony Elvin has been delighted with initial feedback: "It's been great to hear how much our guests like the bedroom refresh programme; the new beds really are such a wow. We've also taken the opportunity to increase the size of our beds in the Deluxe Suites to 2.4 metre square beds, that's about enough room for at least three human starfish!!" He continues: "Much like the refurbishment of our Bubble Lounge bar in November, everything we have done has been about maintaining the Hotel du Vin feel but adding a bit of extra sparkle." Something perhaps less sparkly, but just as necessary, is the replacement of the hotel's ageing lift, according to Tony, "We have the self-proclaimed title of Birmingham's slowest lift at present; I can't imagine there's a slower one anywhere to be honest. We've slowed it right down to stop it getting stuck all the time but clearly that isn't the answer so in the next few weeks we'll be replacing virtually all of it. It's a bit of
a 'spend big with no return' project but unfortunately very necessary and it'll look nice and shiny when it's finished too," joked Tony. “For guests staying with HDV during this conversion time, it will mean a bit of exercise getting to all of the three floors during the works but the award-winning hotel team are ready to help with extra staff on hand to assist with luggage”, assures Tony. Clearly, it’s a great time for the hotel – and well-timed to capitalise on what looks set to be one of the biggest years in Birmingham history. "We're getting some fantastic investment from our owners but better than that we've had some terrific recognition around our service for my team with an Outstanding Customer Service Award from the IAB; a Best Hotel Bar Award from Best Bar None and we recently became Birmingham's first and only 'Maiden Voyage' accredited, female friendly hotel. To top it off our Spa Manager Cora was the top performing Leisure and Spa professional within Hotel du Vin and Colleen, a superstar employee of some 13 year’s service, won Back of House Employee of the Year in January's Malmaison, Belfry and Hotel du Vin Awards." Asked if satisfied with how things are going, Tony was quick to respond; "No way, never! I don't think you can be if you want to keep improving. The awards are fantastic for the team to say well done, we're on the right track, but the second you can say you're satisfied with what you're doing you're already in decline. I'm lucky to have a team that share my ambitions for the hotel, so there's plenty more to come from Hotel du Vin as we keep working hard to improve." From the team behind the hugely successful Opus Restaurant, David Colcombe and Anne Tonks have brought their unique talents to bring us anther success story, with their third venture: Bar Opus in Colmore Business District. This great little ‘big’ place is situated by Snow Hill station, under the Number 1 Snow Hill building and is already busy attracting the corporate office crowd. The Opus team have infused the best elements of Europe in Birmingham with an industrial look and floor to ceiling glass. The large bar area is chilled and unfussy with a relaxed buzz to the place. Serving an all-day breakfast menu, lunch menu and sharing plates after 5pm, the composite menu has some great choices on it. On our busy lunch visit we had the Shashouka hash to start (£7.50) The vegetarian dish was a rich vine tomato compote, with wilted greens, baked with potato hash, served with the most perfectly made fried egg on top. It tasted great and an inspiring choice on this menu. My companion enjoyed her big plate of creamed wild mushrooms garnished with rocket on toast (£8.95) You can never go wrong with a dish like this. The Crab Linguine (£12.95) is a popular choice. My freshly made linguine was top quality, but I think the Brixham white crab meat in Nantoise sauce was a bit too bitter for my palate. The drinks offering has a great choice and has stylish city bar is the perfect pit-stop for postwork drinkies. MARMALADE AT THE BIRMINGHAM REP Bitters ‘N’ Twisted have opened a new bistro and bar inside the famed arches at The Rep Theatre; and it’s called Marmalade! How sweet! The emphasis is on exciting flavour combinations and comforting classics coupled with the style and passion that only an independent operator can offer. They have some intriguing dishes to choose from, like the Confit Duck Samosas in Homemade Hoisin, Orange & Triple Sec Marmalade and the Crab and Cod Korokke, with Mango Salsa, and a Celeriac Remoulade. Tantalising! The pre-theatre dining menu starts at just £15.95 for two courses and £19.95 for three courses. The drinks menu looks quite robust with handpicked quality wines, local ales, craft bottle beers and a range of cocktails; and I would think so too, as Bitters ‘n’ Twisted is the company behind six other quality independent drinking venues in the city - The Jekyll and Hyde tavern, Bodega, The Rose Villa Tavern, Island Bar and the New Inn in Harborne. FRESH LOOK FOR CITY HOTELS Three of the top hotels in the city have recently gone refurb crazy and had a makeover for 2015. First the Bubble Lounge at Hotel du Vin was revived with French flair; the Hyatt Regency on Broad Street gave their bar a major overhaul and renamed it The Gentleman & Scholar and now MalMaison have refurbed their bar and brasserie and renamed it Chez Mal. BEHIND THE SCENES
We caught up with two of Birmingham’s most experienced and enigmatic restauranteurs from Henry Wong in Harborne, which celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year: the highly talented Front of House Manager, Marianne and Executive Chef, Ricky Wu. When did you start working with Henry Wong Marianne? M: I started in 1988 and then Ricky joined me in 1993. So a very long time. Ricky, did you always want to be a chef ? R: I have honestly, I think it’s because of my Mum’s takeaway, she’s been running it in Birmingham since I was young. Where did you train? R: I went to train in Hong Kong. It was really hard work, but such a great experience - I learnt so much there and I’m so glad I did it. What was the first dish you ever made? R: It was a Traditional dish of stirred beef with hoisin. It’s still our favourite dish. What food do you like to eat when at home, Marianne? M: Rice and noodles! To be honest though we rarely eat at home. Ricky prefers for us to go out to eat; we love our food, so it’s always nice to experience other restaurants – plus, it means he gets a break from cooking. What is your favourite dish on the menu at Henry Wong? M: Honey pepper everything! Mmmm, with king prawns and on cashew nuts, especially. Another favourite has to be the Imperial spare ribs and the Sirloin steak in teriyaki sauce.
When you're not eating Chinese food, what or where do you like to eat? R: We really enjoy the food at Fumo, part of the italian restaurant San Carlo. Simpsons in Edgbaston is a favourite of ours, too. We like to try different tasting menus at restaurants. We don’t go often because it can be expensive, but it’s always so tasty and a great way of trying lots of things on the menu. Is there anything you have not tried to eat yet - what is it? M: Oh, I don’t know, we have tried so much from Indian dishes to Caribbean food; we must have tried almost everything by now. Maybe, Lisbon-style, I don’t think we have tried that. Yet. Has the Henry Wong restaurant changed much since you were involved, Marianne? M: Yes, there were big changes after 2008 when the owner refurbished it and again when Ricky became Executive Chef. Together – and with the rest of our team – we have worked hard to build the business into an incredible place to eat. We always look to update the menu each season and Ricky loves to try out new dishes, aswell as offer the Signature dishes that our customers know and love. Are there any exciting plans for the restaurant in 2015? R: Well, the restaurant has been here for 30 years now and we are planning to celebrate its anniversary. We’re very proud of standing the test of time at Henry Wong and it will be fun to celebrate with our customers – old and new.

DJ Derek, the uk’s oldest record spinner and former staple on the festival circuit, came out of retirement to hit the decks at the launch of Selfridges’ first creative campaign for 2015, Bright Old Things. The initiative, which celebrates those who are bucking retirement in favour of a career renaissance, has seen the work of two local but little-known artists, 60-year-old actress-turned-chairmaker Den Woods and 53-year-old teaching assistant-turned-textile artist Sally Peplow, championed by the retail giant. Selected from hundreds of entries, Den and Sally are proving that creativity is ageless, after opting to make something of their creative passions at a time in life when many choose to give up work in favour of a quieter life. The duo, whose creations now fill the store’s two iconic 360 degree windows and will be seen by thousands of shoppers over the next six weeks, were toasted to by friends, family, colleagues and Selfridges guests, which took place in the store’s top floor brasserie and champagne bar, The Balcony.
Bayadère – The Ninth Life is a radical re-imagining of the celebrated ballet, La Bayadère, for the 21st century. Moving between fact and fantasy, the original story is interwoven with the first ever visit of Indian dancers to Europe in 1838. The many-layered narrative presents a fresh new vision of dance that belongs to both India and Europe and features originally commissioned music by Gabriel Prokofiev, the London-based composer, producer and DJ. Expect a visually stunning performance packed with visceral energy and choreographic virtuosity from an international cast of exceptional dancers.
The Producers, Starring comedian Jason Manford, is a Broadway musical adapted by Mel Brooks, from the Academy Award winning 1968 movie of the same title. In the musical, as in the film, the story concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. BIRMINGHAM FIRMS SHORTLISTED IN REDESIGN OF CENTENARY SQUARE The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Landscape Institute on behalf of Birmingham City Council have announced the shortlist in the international open design competition to redesign Birmingham’s Centenary Square. A total of 185 entries were received from across the world and judged anonymously before a final five schemes were shortlisted. The finalists are Atkins, Birmingham, Barton Willmore, Reading, Broadway Malyan, Birmingham, Graeme Massie Architects, Edinburgh and Open Studio Architects with United Visual Artists, London. The five shortlisted teams have now been tasked to develop their initial concepts before the schemes go on public display this May before final judging in June. Sasha Bhavan, of Knox Bhavan Architects, RIBA adviser, said: “We were impressed with the number and calibre of entries. From 185 entries covering 30 countries, anonymous judging and a broad spectrum of submissions made it almost impossible to shortlist just five; all of whom should be absolutely delighted. “It was the impressive analysis and empathy with the site and city which probably resulted in an all UK shortlist, two of which are Birmingham practices. Birmingham was built on business and trade and over the next 10 years we are going to go through the next revolution. Our region is going to have thousands of owner-managed businesses go from family member to family member, or partner to partner or sold outright. If it’s not you then it is someone you know. Over the past 15 years of dealing with families and family businesses I have seen millions of pounds lost, squandered or just forgotten because the decisions that were made were not fit for the exit that had been dreamt up. On the other hand I have seen a small number that have been executed to near perfection. What was the difference between the two? Game plans, guidance and focus,. They all sound boring and trite but they are the lifeblood of a deal. Deciding whether a family or partners should sell a business has a large number of outcomes; many of them are assumed like a big cheque in the bank; more holidays, less stress and more “me” time. It also come with its possible down sides like feelings of loss, after all you spent large amounts of time in and around your business. Often people associate their worth and status with their position so it’s wise to understand some of the pitfalls that can occur and have some simple answers on standby so that you can arrive at this momentous day with fewer headaches.
A lack of these processes, transfer of knowledge and poor corporate governance can mean that any initial offer received on a sale can be significantly reduced throughout the sale or transition process as potential pitfalls and doubts are identified. Don’t let this scare you, but you do need to act now to put your house in order.

DLUXE PEOPLE Gary Wroe, MBA, is Chair of the British Jewellery Association and Managing Director of Hockley Mint. Currently facilitating the merger of the British Jewellery Association (BJA) and the National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG), Gary has also dealt with mergers and acquisitions within Hockley Mint and is a huge proponent of apprentice schemes, himself having started in the jewellery industry as an apprentice on a YTS scheme. dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL talk to Gary about what makes the West Midlands such a great place to do business in, the challenges facing businesses today and how he unwinds in the Second City and beyond. What makes the West Midlands a great place for business to succeed? The West Midlands area has a huge pool of knowledge and experience making it an amazing place to start or to grow a business to the next level. There is a huge support network available to ensure business have access to the latest and most up to date information. From my experience Birmingham council have risen to the challenge of funding businesses with grants that actually make a substantial difference to projects, helping companies to invest in technology and capital equipment. For ourselves, these grants have enabled us to invest upwards of £200k to win contracts and secure the future growth of our business. The West Midlands is also a really friendly place to work; networking is important and fun, it’s easy to meet like-minded people who want to shout about the area which is great as there are so many things happening here we should shout about it as much as possible. What are the biggest challenges facing owner managed and family businesses today? The biggest challenge for a family businesses is to manage the change between generations. The world is changing so quickly that it’s like jumping on a merry-go-round that is forever gaining speed and traction. When you have been in the company for 30 years you are able to see the changes and make adjustments accordingly but it can be difficult to jump on, see the changes happening and keep up with them. Challenges are different now to how they were and it is essential that your business adapts. What’s in your garage? My garage is full of DIY tools –I do try and get work done around the house but time usually stops me and we end up calling the professionals. I do like DIY! Other things include a dusty set of Ping golf clubs and couple of mountain bikes. What’s in your library? Generally reading is when we go on holiday. When I get the chance though I like books along the lines of Dan Brown’s Di Vinci Code, something that keeps you guessing! One of my favourite novels is Fatherland by Robert Harris. How do you keep sharp? I’m committed to the insanity workout programme 6 days a week. Getting up at 5:30 in the morning and working out to a cardio program for an hour before showering and breakfast really sets me up for the day!

What’s your favourite Birmingham restaurant? Got to be Fiesta Del Asado. My favourite dish is Bife de Angosto; a 16oz single muscle taken from the lion. It’s too much for me to eat but what a great taste. No starter or dessert with this course! How do you unwind? Our motorhome is our escape. Within an hour we can be out in the country enjoying the sights of some really great towns and cities. The motorhome enables us to visit and stay over many great places. When we arrive we generally cycle or walk to get around rather than public transport. Our boxer dog Darcy enjoys the freedom of the fields and countryside. Our favourite short hop has to be Morton in Marsh What about further afield? I love St Lucia with its sandy beaches and friendly locals. Staying in the capital Castries and visiting the local area you really appreciate what a beautiful country it is. The Pitons are the eye catching attraction and rise high above the island – an incredible place. What are you most proud of over the last year? We have won a major contract to supply product to a multiple retailer and I would like to build on that success and increase the business. I am chairman of the British Jewellery Association and have been for the past 12 months, we are currently in discussions with the National Association of jewellers to merge the two together. This would certainly be a monumental achievement within our industry. You are a big advocate of apprentices, why is that? When I started work 30 years ago I signed up with the British Jewellery Association on a YTS scheme. I learnt from the grass roots every single one of the operations to produce an item using the lost wax casting technique. As I built my knowledge I started to be directed more and more into management until I went back to university at 33 to gain a theoretical understanding of management. Firstly I studied quality assurance for three years then moved onto a post graduate diploma in management studies, both at University of Central England. I then enrolled on an Executive MBA program at University of Birmingham. What’s your favourite quote? “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have” Vince Lombardi
