Oh to be on a beach! The harsh winter we were all predicting has well and truly been a windy washout although we should be thankful that the only snow we’ve seen has been lining the black and red runs of Sochi at the 2014 winter Olympics. Well done to all those who competed in what was a truly enjoyable extravaganza of winter sports. Packing our unused snowshoes away it’s time to turn our attention to spring and the promise of a better climate. We really are hoping that March will be true to form and arrive like a Lion and leave like a Lamb although that still does leave us with April showers to contend with! Fear not though as this issue we’ve a huge amount of activities suitable for both rain and shine including a special feature on what’s happening across the county to keep younger readers occupied over the Easter break on page 54.
Older readers have not been left out as we have our full events guide starting on page 58 and focusing on what’s not to be missed this spring. One of the key shows of the season is the world premiere of new musical Water Babies and we have been lucky enough to chat to leading lady, West End sensation and star of Wicked Louise Dearman, ahead of the show on page 14. It’s a busy issue; we’ve been for a spin in Mercedes’ latest SUV (page 42), popped across for some winter sun at a fabulous five star resort in Crete (page 48) and for those with itchy feet, compiled a pick list of the hottest properties available for sale right now. All of that and of course, this being spring we’ve naturally got our full guide to the season’s trends both in terms of fashion and home styling to keep you ahead of the pack. Enjoy the reprieve that is spring. We’ll speak again in a kinder climate filled with the holiday staples of sun, sea and sand. Bliss.

SPOTLIGHT Interview by JONATHAN FRASER
A new album, a book, a tour and the creation of a whole new character; 2014 is set to be an exciting and busy year for actress Louise Dearman, one of the new breed of West End royalty quenching the UK’s current thirst for quality musical theatre here in Leicester dluxe Leicestershire and Rutland’s Jon Fraser caught up with Louise, fresh from an epic three years in the West End production of Wicked, to talk about what it takes to break into musical theatre, the joys and demands of writing her first book as well as the challenge of creating a whole new character in Water Babies a new musical premiering at Curve this April. It’s a cold, foggy day in the dluxe offices when we finally manage to catch up with Louise Dearman. With a hectic schedule and no time to chat at the recent launch of Water Babies at Curve, Louise instead opts to calls us post-hair appointment from a London coffee shop. “I’ve gone back to blonde”, she says with an audible smile in her voice and immediately the grey Leicester fog seems to shrink away at the sound of her sunny enthusiasm. “I’ve literally just finished Wicked. I played Elphaba for a year and before that, I played Glinda for two years, so it’s very strange to not be in Oz anymore.” She laughs “although there was 10 months inbetween, where I took a break from musicals and released my album ‘Here Comes The Sun’. I also did some live gigs and had a brilliant time, but then I received a lovely phone call asking what I would think about coming back to sing for Elphaba.” The offer of playing both lead roles in such a big show is unheard of and understandably intimidating. “I think my words were ‘Can I sleep on it?’ because it was such a daunting prospect. When I did the show before, of course I looked at Rachel Tucker who played Elphaba and thought ‘I would love to give that a go’.” Despite her reservations Louise’s portrayal brought won rave reviews “It all worked out and I had the most incredible time, so I feel very blessed to have played both roles.”
the same love-interest and differing view points on the Wizard’s corrupt government, all of which ultimately lead to Elphaba’s public fall from grace. It’s a story about growth, change and acceptance and I ask Louise if her own early start in theatre (she started dancing at the tender age of 3), helped her in her portrayal of both characters? “I’m not sure, I really don’t have a showbiz family at all. I think people believe that if you have been in theatre for a long time then your family is probably quite ‘stagey’. My family is very grounded which has kept me very grounded.”
“it’s very strange to not be in Oz anymore”
Although her family life may not have been theatrical, her CV reads like the ultimate stage apprenticeship. “I’ve done a lot of touring, I’ve done a lot of understudying, I’ve been a ‘swing’ which means covering up to eight ensemble roles - so I think I have had to work my way up. I’m still learning now, but being in the West End playing the lead role was what I wanted to do since I began in this career. Wicked definitely taught me a lot but Guys and Dolls, where I performed as Sarah Brown at Donmar Warehouse, taught me a huge amount about acting. I think that was the first moment I stopped thinking about myself as a singer, or a theatre performer, and thought of myself as an actress – it was a great learning curve.” So what of today’s current crop of West End hopefuls? With musical theatre currently enjoying the spotlight thanks to TV shows such as Glee, Smash and any number of Andrew Lloyd Webber talent spotting shows, is it harder now to break through and get noticed or easier? “That’s such a tough question” Louise sighs, “T here have been so many opportunities, like the Andrew Lloyd Webber television competitions, Finding Jesus, Maria and all those programmes. In fact Lauren Samuels who is also in Water Babies was part of that and I think it has opened up the door for many people. I think what’s harder nowadays is developing and becoming a Musical Theatre ‘star’, if you like. People like Michael Ball, Ruthie Henshall, all these artists are big names in Musical Theatre, but the number of ‘stars’ is becoming smaller and smaller, unfortunately.”
Continued...
Being cast in such opposing roles naturally brings into question your own characteristics, so which role did Louise think suited her best? “Oh” she sighs, “There are parts of me in both Glinda and Elphaba; I love being the girly-girl and I do like dressing up and letting my hair down like Glinda. However the parts of Elphaba that most connected with me is that she sticks up for other people, she’s very compassionate and believes in doing what’s right. Wicked has been a runaway success around the world. The story follows the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the North), who struggle with opposing personalities, rivalry over

16 So what’s the best way to learn your craft? “I’ll never regret the way that my career came about. I think it was good for me to develop very slowly and to do smaller productions, to watch and learn from other people and gradually work my way up. I think it’s tougher when young people are thrust into the limelight and you’re the big name out there playing the lead roles - it’s kind of ‘what happens next?’ once all that interest is gone. I’m 35 this year and I think I’m in a really good place. I genuinely feel like now is the right time for me, as frustrating as it may have been years ago when I wanted it all to happen there and then. Louise will no doubt have to call upon all her years of experience for her next challenge, that of bringing life to the character of Mrs D in the new musical adaption of the much loved book and film Water Babies. “I’m looking forward to so many things; literally creating a role is something that I’ve wanted to do my entire career. I actually got to see my costume designs for the first time the other day and we got to talk about some of the special effects they’re going to be using, which just made it even more exciting. I’m just dying to see how they are going to do the special effects to give the feeling that you are underwater. I believe there are going to be lots of futuristic projections and there will be real water in the show as well, although they’ve told me I don’t get too wet, they save that for the other guys” she laughs, “it’s definitely going to be an all guns blazing spectacle.” The key to the success of any new musical is the strength of its score. So what can we expect from Water Babies? “Well Lauren Samuels and I have released one of the songs from the show ‘Waiting For You’, which has gone down really well so I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into the other big songs. I know there is at least one other really big number, a big deeper ballad that I’m looking forward to singing.” “There’s a great fusion between musical theatre and contemporary sound within the score. It’s not trying to be a pop musical, but it definitely has a more modern and contemporary edge, which lots of young fans enjoy. The great thing about Water Babies is that it’s open to all ages; the original was very much aimed at young children with a lead character who was only seven years old, but in this production he’s seventeen; it’s all aimed quite a bit higher. It’s a fantasy that ages 8-80 will be able to enjoy.” So what of Mrs D, the role which Louise is busy creating? “Well I’m still learning lots about Mrs D!” Louise laughs, “Every time we get to chat to Ed Curtis and Chris Egan [the show’s Director and Composer] we are getting more and more excited because we are hearing so many different things that are still being developed and written. Lauren, Tom or myself will sing something and Chris will say “Okay, I didn’t think of it that way but I actually really like that”. It’s great to be part of that and be part of the creative process as well.” So what preparation has Louise been able to do? “Well as soon as I heard about it I read the original book and re-watched the movie. If you know the story she’s a very mystical and a fairy like character. From reading the script I’m really looking forward to the fact that she appears in so many different forms and in different scenarios, she’s almost like an older sister character to Tom. There is definitely something very magical about her though. It’s quite weird actually, because when you take over a role you always try to put your own stamp on it and do things differently to the actress who played the role previously, but to have no reference is quite daunting but very exciting.” The show is set to run from April 24th to May 17th at Curve and represents yet another high profile premier at the venue. “Places like Curve have such a buzz, it’s a prestigious place to work and the perfect place to try out new things. What I do know is that the production
at Leicester Curve will be at the same level for when it hopefully transfers to the West End. Although a run at the West End is by no means guaranteed, from what we have seen of the show so far, it appears to have all of the necessary ingredients to be a huge success. So what does the future hold for Louise? Another magical and mystical character perhaps? Louise laughs “I’m always looking for new challenges and at the moment I’m writing a book with my friend Mark Evans who’s currently touring the US in ‘The Book of Mormon’. It’s called ‘The Secrets of Stage Success’ and is basically a guide to all things Musical Theatre for anyone who wants to perform, whether as a hobby, or to train professionally. We are furiously writing as much as we can at the moment and it’s meant to be fun and informative; we don’t want to preach to people!” Preaching is something I am sure Louise will not be found guilty of, as we wind up our conversation I’m struck by how warm, genuine and enthusiastic she is. With rehearsals and performances Louise will become a Leicester resident for almost three months, “You’ll have to say hello when I come to Leicester. I have no idea where I’m living yet though” she laughs, “all I’ve heard is the shopping’s really good!”

1.
First impressions count: If a potential purchaser is put off before they’ve even walked through the door then you’re doomed. Take a look at the outside of your home as a stranger might see it. First impressions can make or break, so invest some time and energy in your garden. A pretty pot by the front door never hurt anyone!
2.
Odour: It may seem minor, but the aroma of your house is important when selling. A discretely hidden diffuser will do the trick. Some people advise offering coffee and freshly baked bread, but when it could take a few weeks to sell your home; you can’t always turn on the bread-maker at the drop of a hat.
SEVEN TIPS FOR SELLING IN 2014 So it looks like 2014 could well be a good time to sell your home according to the latest Halifax Housing Market Confidence Tracker. However, if you don’t want to put your faith in such a futuristic sounding contraption, you could always follow these good old-fashioned tips to make sure your house is ready!
Did you know the average house price last year rose by:
8%
3.
Clean and tidy: Obvious to most but not to all. Who wants to be shown round a bombsite, let alone buy one? Clear the clutter, load the dishwasher, make the beds and clean the bathroom; it’s not rocket science! Fresh, sparkling and inviting houses sell quicker; get in some fresh cut flowers if you have time.
4.
Temperature: Taking a prospective buyer into a house that has sat empty for the weekend without the heating on is going to put them off instantly. Keep things ticking over at a pleasant 15-20°C; this will prevent your pipes bursting and ensure the agent won’t have to hand round the Thermos and blankets whilst viewing!
5.
Garden: A rear garden does not have to be pristine but as with the house, tidiness is an asset. As your potential buyer gazes from the master bedroom over the garden they would like to see cut grass, trimmed borders and a dash of greenery. Although not always possible at this time of year, the effort is always extremely obvious. Turn to page 26 for our gardening tips!
6.
Problem areas: It’s quite possible there’s part of your house that you’d rather not draw attention to, perhaps somewhere that is mid-repair. Try and get any problems fixed before you enter into the market however, if this isn’t possible, at least advise your agent as to how the issue could be fixed in order to reassure a potential buyer.
7.
Brief the agent: They’re not mind readers and the better prepared the Estate Agent is to answer questions about your house, the easier it will be to sell. It can be embarrassing if whoever conducts the viewing fumbles with the iPad entry system, drop down cinema or fancy lighting rig, so make sure they’re in the know! If it looks easy the buyers will love it.

CONFIDENCE RETURNS RUMOURS ABOUND OF A SWELL IN PROPERTY VALUES AND A MARKET PREPARING ITSELF FOR ANOTHER RALLY. BUT WHAT IS THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE HEADLINES? AIDAN REED, SENIOR PARTNER AT AIDANJREED ESTATE AGENTS HAS BETTER NEWS.
is traditionally slower to get started than that in London and the Home Counties, individual homes and hotspots are seeing both greater demand and percentage increases in prices. What’s more, the trend for several buyers competing for an individual property is growing.
Figures out at the end of February have shown mortgage lending for the year at its highest level since 2007. These figures, from the Council of Mortgage Lending (CML), highlight the assistance given by the government’s Help to Buy Scheme. This scheme has been helping first-time buyers get on the property ladder and is starting to have a snowball effect throughout the market.
Conversely, there is a definite equilibrium of buyers and sellers in the wider property market which therefore makes the pricing in all of these different microsectors crucial in gaining an accurate insight into the market as a whole. One simply cannot generalise in terms of how house prices are moving; as ever it’s all about your individual home and its location.
The Help to Buy scheme has also increased demand and profits amongst homebuilders according to their own industry reports and this, coupled with impressive GDP figures for the UK economy, a consistent monetary policy and low interest rates has fuelled a resurgence of confidence in the housing market both in the East Midlands and the UK. Whilst it is true that growth within the Leicestershire and East Midlands market
“As ever, it’s all about where you live and your postcode.” Aidan Reed
In summary then, this gradual growth is good news for both buyers and sellers and means that the market is poised to avoid a return to the boom and bust of the last 25 years. As confidence in the property market returns, those thinking of moving should remember that now really is the best spring market that we’ve seen for around seven years.
AIDANJ REED WAS RECOGNISED AT THE 2013/14 INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY AWARDS, WINNING THE BEST ESTATE AGENCY (LEICESTERSHIRE) CATEGORY.

GARDENING With James Brewer
Place varieties such as ‘Vibernum Dodnantense Dawn’ in the centre of a border and you’ll be greeted with this shrub flowering in March and its heady perfume is very much welcome this time of year.
Vibernum James may be new to dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland magazine, but he’s no stranger to garden design and construction- he’s been designing gardens of all sizes and styles for nineteen years now and we’ve been lucky enough to secure his services as our Gardening Editor. James will be contributing ‘how to’ articles regarding garden design as well as seasonal action plans to keep your garden flourishing with colour and life no matter what the time of year. From humble beginnings having to borrow his parents tools, James’ passion has grown into a sustainable and established business, developing over the past 19 years to incorporate aspects of garden design, something which set James’ creative side alight. Pergolas, Gazebos, lighting and second terraces have become second nature to James and he has become an expert in design, creating gardens to the highest standards of longevity. There is something reassuring about a business that doesn’t subcontract any work out, meaning that from consultation to completion you’ll only be dealing with James (and Billster his trusty Labrador of course), eliminating the possibility of miscommunication or misinterpretation of design. James is also well versed in the use of natural materials such as Oak, Natural Stone, combining them with standard and semi-mature plants, to blend new gardens into their natural surroundings. Photos of James’ projects can be viewed on his website www.jamesbrewergardens. com and if you’d like to utilise his wealth of experience, give him a call on 01858 464 194 or 07775 614 676 to discuss your gardens requirements.
Alternatively, try planting a pair of ‘Vibernum Tinus’ near the main entrance to your home; it responds well to pruning so can be shaped into a more formal globe. You’ll be greeted with lush rich evergreen foliage and a delicate blossom, laced with an amazing perfume that makes leaving the house an absolute pleasure, even on the dreariest of days.
SPRING’S MUST HAVES With spring pretty much on our doorstep, it is the perfect time to invest some love into your garden, nurturing it to ensure that when the sunshine comes (and it will come), it is a thing of beauty. Here you’ll find the plants that, in my opinion, simply need to be in every good garden, those unsung heroes of the planting border which blossom and bloom far above others. If your garden is lacking in any of these, it’s definitely time to go shopping!
Foxglove /Digitalis Referred to as a weed as recently as the 1960s, they flower mid-to-late spring and will attract much needed wildlife to the garden. These are among my favourites, with the white variety in particular offering a great splash of colour for the border. Foxglove normally reverts to its stronger gene and changes colour after a few years which provides the perfect excuse to get some more. Just be aware children shouldn’t eat these and to prevent this, I plant them towards the back of the border and have them growing through larger shrubs, which act as supports for this tall majestic biannual.

Snakes Head Fritillary
Worth noting for the wow factor they instantly bestow upon any garden in spring, Snakes Head Fritillary bulbs and flowers always bring a smile. The pendula flower has no scent, but its vibrant colours include shades of pink, purple or pure white and help it to stand out from the crowd despite its size. Personally, I plant these into the lawn as their flowering generally coincides with the lawn’s first cut of the year. Their delicate little nodding heads look amazing amid a sea of lush green grass.

Daphnes
andmade Heaven
Another overlooked garden gem, Daphnes are small and perfectly suited to the front of the border or by paths and doors. I always plant these in clumps of 3 –5 for best effects and various varieties flower in winter and spring.
Over the past few years we’ve become increasingly fascinated with craft and craftsmanship. Anything with a handmade look or feel is a sure-fire winner! 6
Ferns Varieties such as Dryopteris Felix-Mas are perfect in those damp shaded corners of the garden or under trees. Their skyward searching leaves always look vibrant and full of life. They’re not all deciduous either, Dryopteris can be semi-evergreen and evergreen too.

Benscliffe Hay, Newtown Linford Guide Price: £3,500,000 Benscliffe Hay is hands-down the most stunning property we’ve seen on the Leicestershire property market for years; it literally takes our breath away. The hilltop setting opposite Bradgate Park means the famous “Old John” is in plain view and offers some stunning panoramic vistas of the Charnwood Forest. Despite only having four bedroom suites over three floors, the property has some jaw-dropping features including a leisure centre with steam and sauna areas, climate controlled gym and swimming pool, a library with bespoke built-in circular book shelving, a cinema, fitted wine cellar and a panic room, providing impenetrable security in the event of a security breach. It is in short, the absolute pinnacle of luxury. Internationally renowned architects Janine Stone designed the house and no expense was spared in its development and construction, with premium materials being transported to the 3.7-acre site from all around the country. Sutton Fields House, Sutton Bonington Guide Price: £695,000 Set within 4 lush acres of mature grounds, the West Wing of Sutton Fields House is south facing, which gives it some fantastic views looking out across the Soar Valley. The magnificent country house was built in an imposing Victorian Gothic style and retains some of its exceptional internal and external architectural features. Six bedrooms are spread across the house’s three floors and the West Wing also boasts a resplendent dining hall with sitting area, drawing room and games room. The location couldn’t be more convenient, far enough away from the hustle sand bustle, but still within touching distance of the M1 corridor (under 2 miles), Nottingham International East Midlands Airport (4.6 miles) and East Midlands Parkway (2.2 miles). The Grange, Birstall Guide Price: £650,000 With oak floorboards, beamed ceilings and windows with stained glass, this Tudor style home exudes immense character and we’re head over heels for it. Inside there’s no shortage of space with an impressive entrance hall, three reception rooms and a breakfast kitchen on the first floor, with stairs down to a wine cellar. A short but stylish trip up the solid oak feature staircase brings you to the first floor on which you’ll find three of the six bedrooms, along with the main bathroom. Travel upwards again and you’ll arrive on third floor, which offers another three bedrooms (one being a box room) and an additional bathroom. Situated on a third of an acre plot, the house has a large and well-tended garden, complete with a circular natural stone folly. In all honesty, we were sold at the wine cellar. Tempe House, Swepstone Guide Price: £1,150,000
Old and new blend together in perfect harmony with Tempe House, which is made up of a Grade II listed 18th Century Farmhouse and later period additions, including an adjoining annexe made up of several one and two storey renovated former agricultural buildings. There are so many features we love about this house, our favourites being the marble chimneypiece in the dining room, the cast iron wood burning stove in the kitchen and the sumptuous freestanding bathtub in the ultrachic monochrome tiled bathroom. With five bedrooms and four bathrooms, the 1.9-acre, open countryside plot in the National Forest is spacious to say the least. Access to Tempe House comes via a private Bridleway and sitting mid-way between Ashby de la Zouch and Market Bosworth; Birmingham, Nottingham and Derby are all within easy reach courtesy of the M42/A42. For more information and to organise a viewing contact Savills Nottingham on 0115 934 8020 www.savills.com
Keepers Lodge, Burton On The Wolds Guide Price: £650,000 The interior décor of this detached country house may need a little bit of TLC to bring it into right into the 21st century, but this cottage has bags of character and would make for a fantastic blank canvas onto which you could paint your dream home, and it’s for this reason we’re captivated by it; the potential is just immense! The beautiful rural setting, one mile outside Burton means the home is surrounded by unspoilt open countryside and the plot itself extends to 2.43 acres, ensuring both privacy and serenity, with a picturesque formal garden to the rear, fantastic for sitting out in when the warm weather arrives. The cottage itself offers three reception rooms, five bedrooms, a separate annexe (with two bedrooms), a range of outbuildings and a pony paddock, meaning you’ll be getting a great deal of property for the relatively small asking price. A certified bargain! For more information and to organise a viewing contact Andrew Granger & Co on 01509 235 534 www.andrewgranger.co.uk
9 The Copse, Bushby Guide Price: £695,000 What we love about this property is its exclusivity and secuirty. The five bedroom, detached home offers wonderful family living and entertaining space and is one of only nine homes on the ‘Twigden Homes’ development, access to which comes via electric gates complete with a secure evening intercom system. There are so many features that give the home character and mark it out from the crowd, including a ‘Snug’ TV area in the breakfast room, a 17ft Media Room and a stunning 8ft floor to ceiling tropical fish tank to name but a few! Upstairs are the property’s five bedrooms, with the master bedroom of particular note thanks to its dressing area and ensuite. One of the guest bedrooms also boasts an ensuite shower room, whilst a generous-sized bathroom services the remaining three bedrooms. The garden is southwest facing and the garage is currently set up as a gym, with a kitchenette area and WC. Spring/Summer 2014 Trends BRAIDED BEAUTY
This season braids hit the catwalks bringing back new textured appeal to the classic plait. Giles saw Braveheart inspired braids take centre stage with a knotted quality to them to create a nuanced disheveled finish. Whilst at Tabernacle Twins, hair was pushed to one side and cleverly plaited scalp braids crept from the ear upwards to give the look of a fauxundercut.
The bun has always been a style-staple gracing the runways season after season, but this spring/summer 2014 saw a modern twist on this well-loved classic. Models hit the runway at Tata Naka with precision centre partings offset by beautifully sculpted ballet buns pinned carefully in place at the back of the head. To add a dynamic take to the knot, elastics were placed through the middle so that when removed, buns took on a cantaloupe-like shape. Ekaterina Kukhareva saw Japanese Zen with an element of Geisha. Kitsch coiffured double knots stormed the catwalk, inspired by the Japanese Maiko, whilst at Pearce Fionda they took on a beautiful shell like quality, carefully moulded high on to the top of the head.
BESPOKE BALLET BUNS To create a whole look the texture of a style is key. Spring/Summer 2014 saw combinations of textures within the hair being used to add depth and distinction to subtly sophisticated locks.
DUALITY OF TEXTURE
At Jean-Pierre Braganza the look du jour was worked-in texture, with the focus on having slightly unkempt hair with an imperfect centre parting and strands styled behind the ears. Whereas at Ones to Watch, the focus was on incorporating a dry movement and texture at the back with strength at the hairline.

WIN A YEAR OF Cut & Colours
@ CHRISTOPHER WRIGHT HAIR
A NEW WARD ROB FOR SS E 14!
WARDROBE CONSULTANT
N
estled in the leafy suburb of Stoneygate, Christopher Wright Hair is already one of Leicester’s brightest successes, and they’ve just got that bit brighter. The Allandale Road salon, which underwent a massive refurbishment last year, was short-listed for the Salon Design Award at The British Hairdressing Business Awards at the end of 2013 and now has been awarded a qualification in Colour Mastery, the highest level of achievement with Matrix. In fact, only 12 people have the opportunity to complete this qualification each year and Christopher Wright Hair is currently the only salon in Leicestershire that can proudly boast a Matrix Colour Master – making Christopher Wright Hair one of the leading colour salons in the entire county.
Got a wardrobe stuffed full of clothes but nothing to wear? Then you need a Wardrobe Makeover from boutique owner Michelle Taylor. Michelle, who runs Abiti Ladieswear on Francis Street, Stoneygate, is paid to root through your wardrobe, ditching the dross but saving the forgotten gems, allowing room for garments for the new stylish you. Wardrobe Makeovers start from just £150 and personal shopping experiences are available, as well as one-to-one out of hours services. For more information on Abiti visit www.abiti-ladies.co.uk find them on Facebook or Twitter @AbitiLadieswear.
Over a period of three gruelling months, the salon’s Premier Technician, Staci Smyth, was taught the science behind colouring and specifically, how colour works inside the hair – all with the aim to achieve perfect results every time. With her newly acquired knowledge, Staci is now able to choose the perfect colour for each client, accentuating face shape, features and skin tone, as well as being able to personalise individual shades for a truly unique colour experience. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND tracked down Christopher Wright’s Colour Master to get the inside track on what 2014 holds in store for hairdressing: “I think that spring summer 2014 will offer a lot of soft natural waves, sleek ponytails and strong centre partings, as seen on the catwalk during London Fashion Week. I love doing bold statement colours on my more adventurous clients and I take a lot of inspiration from Florence Welch. Brunettes seen on the catwalk for Burberry and Mulberry are taking it back to effortless low maintenance hair, with shades ranging from deep, rich and warm chocolate browns up to soft caramel and toffee tones. I love Megan Fox and Nicole Scherzinger because they demonstrate these beautifully.”

MERCEDES GLA FIRST LOOK
The first Mercedes-Benz in the fastgrowing compact SUV catergory has been unveiled to compete against the likes of BMW’s X3 and Audi’s Q3 and Q5. The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to be optionally available with the new-generation permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC, with fully variable torque distribution and rounds off the premium brand’s extensive SUV portfolio; by having four model series (GLA, ML, GL and G). The company now offers the widest SUV range of any European premium manufacturer.
An impressive top speed of 145 mph

The muscular and imposing appearance of the exterior is systematically continued inside. All trim surfaces feature a metallic finish with sculpted dashboard, consisting of an upper and lower section in matt and gloss grain finishes, designed to give a modern feel and control the flow of light around the well-trimmed cabin. Five round air vents sit beside a large, freestanding display, whilst a three-spoke steering wheel with 12 function keys is used to ensure that all controls can be reached and read effortlessly. Sports seats in a wide choice of trims and colour combinations allows plenty of scope for individualisation, whilst practical concerns are answered with the optional Load Compartment package. This enables the backrest of the rear seat unit to be moved to a steeper position, enlarging the load compartment capacity by 60 litres, providing space for bulky items while still allowing the rear seats to be used by passengers. Initially, buyers can choose from two petrol engines, 1.6 and 2.0-litre, along with two diesel engine options, both 2.2-litre, which excel with dynamic torque. The range topping GLA 250 4MATIC sprints from zero to 62 mph in only 6.5 seconds and the power continues to an impressive top speed of 145 mph. Emissions for the lower powered diesel are a notable 114 g CO2 per kilometre, no doubt helped by the GLA’s class-leading aerodynamic efficiency. Mercedes Benz have employed numerous techniques including a low A-pillar step, aerodynamically optimised mirror housings and a streamlined rear end to achieve a Cd figure of just 0.29, which aids the GLA’s remarkable fuel consumption; with combined fuel economy of up to 65 mpg easily achievable. All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The GLA is no soft roader. Available with a new generation of the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system with variable torque distribution. The GLA’s four wheel drive system includes a power take-off to the rear axle that is integrated with an automatic dual clutch transmission, along with a rear-axle gear with integrated, electrohydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch. This set-up allows fully variable distribution of the torque between front and rear axles, increasing off road ability. 4MATIC models are also equipped with DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) and an off-road transmission mode as standard, meaning you can sit back and let the vehicle do the hard work, maintaining a slow speed when negotiating downhill gradients. Pricing for the GLA starts at £25,850 and is due to arrive with dealers from mid March. For more information visit www.mercedesbenz.co.yuk or visit Mercedes Benz, 9 St. George’s Way, Leicester. Designed to be highly manoeuvrable around town, lively on country roads and dynamic and efficient on the motorway, the GLA features the high-quality appointments and thoughtful detailing that you’d expect from Mercedes Benz, with a flexible interior designed to position it. The rear seat backrests can not only be folded down completely, but are also adjustable for angle if required. The generous luggage compartment (421 – 836 litres) is well presented and can be loaded without difficulty, thanks to the low sill and wide tailgate, which opens automatically as an option.

Healthy Eating For Life:
TOP 5 Secrets for Losing Weight Weight loss is usually one of our New Year’s resolutions to fall by the wayside. However, with some expert help from the British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) this year can be different - meaning you can lose weight, keep it off and be healthy all year round.
1. SWITCH WHITE FOODS TO BROWN:
1 2 3 4 5
White pasta, rice and bread provide very few nutrients and are quickly broken down in the body; this will leave you hungry and craving sugar as a pick-me-up.
2. DEAL WITH STRESS:
It wreaks havoc with hormones, slows down your metabolism and causes the body to store more fat, especially around the middle. Stress has the same impact on your body as eating sugar, causing cravings for the wrong foods.
3. EAT FIVE OR SIX TIMES A DAY:
Have three healthy meals and two or three healthy snacks a day, this will give you sustained nutrients and energy for the day, keeping hunger pangs at bay.
4. STOP CALORIE COUNTING:
Listen to your body rather than your calorie counting app. Eat slowly and stop eating when you stop feeling hungry. Keep portion sizes under control, as meals shouldn’t be larger than your cupped hands put together.
5. EXERCISE:
This is important for overall health, energy and mood as well as a support to maintaining a healthy weight. Start slowly with a brisk walk in the park or park further away from your office and walk the rest of the way. To find your local Nutritional Therapist, got to www.bant.org.uk

PETS SHIFT POUNDS New research has indicated that pets could be the biggest positive influence on an active lifestyle. Fish4Dogs has found that 90% of us are more likely to exercise if it’s something that our dog can do with us. The survey of 800 people from across the UK found that over a quarter of those questioned have taken up running with their dog and a further 60% of us would consider upping our current exercise programme if our beloved pooches could take part too.
DIET FAIL A new study has revealed that 50% of women fall off the diet bandwagon within 24 hours of beginning their weight loss crusade. Instead of hitting targets, around half of the 2000 women polled admitted to hitting the cupboards for chocolate within the first day. In reality, it turns out that the women abandoned their diets after an average of just 11 days, leaving them struggling to reach their ideal weight. Many admitted that they are likely to end their diet early if they are feeling stressed or had a bad day at work, while the most popular excuse for a lapse in dietary concentration was feeling they had ‘earned’ a treat.
3. MALORY BAND If the future is fat, can a piece of string hold the answer? Worn around the middle, the Malory Band is an adjustable polyester cord that feels tighter as you eat, providing a gentle reminder of the quantity of food that you consume. Shortening the band as the inches drop off is great for motivation! www.maloryband.com £24.95
Bikram Yoga Leicester has evolved. The dedicated yoga centre on Friar Lane, which launched 9 years ago, underwent a refurbishment over the winter that saw the addition of a second studio, allowing existing, non and new members the opportunity to sample and take part in further styles including Forrest, Dynamic and Flow Yoga, in addition to Children’s and Pregnancy Yoga. The newly christened Urban City Yoga will remain dedicated to Bikram, but will be expanding in other areas in order to become a centre of excellence for yoga in the Midlands. FITNESS TRENDS 2014 Want to be ahead of the curve and the talk of the gym? David Lloyd have released their predictions for the hottest trends that will be taking the fitness world by storm in 2014.
Small group training: Areas of growth will include personal trainerled groups typically comprising 3-5 people who favour a more tailored, personal programme. High intensity interval training (HIIT): Short, intense workouts that aim to achieve quick results will continue to be popular as well as functional training; using equipment such as ViPR and kettlebells to ensure the entire body is moving during training. High street fitness: Expect this to be a trend with huge potential for growth. With everyone hard pressed to fit exercise into their daily routine, more and more leisure organisations are providing nonmembership personal training exercise and nutritional services in town centre studios. Technology aided fitness programmes: The ability to instantly record workout data and track individual progress has revolutionised the fitness industry. Expect this emerging trend to continue, as fitness groups find more innovative ways to optimise cardio and resistance training. Cycling: The continued increase in popularity of cycling will see more people take to their saddles this year, with hi-tech indoor cycle trainers that combine scientifically accurate data with the feel of riding a real bike set to take off in 2014. To get kitted out for training or a mammoth road race visit Vélobici on Francis Street, Stoneygate, www.velobici.cc.

Minute Training
Fitness trends have veered away from slogging it out on the treadmill in recent years, placing high intensity training firmly in the spotlight, and it looks like it’s here to stay. In our ever-increasingly busy lives, finding time to train can seem a nigh on impossible task, so we asked Alexis Fletcher, Personal Trainer at Virgin Active how to make fitness flexible, fast and focused. Squat Jumps: Stand with your feet hip width apart, push your hips back and jump as high as possible, landing in a squat position. Perform as many of these as you can for 30 seconds and then jog on the spot for one minute. Stair Sprints: This one’s simple. Find some stairs and run up them two at a time, jogging back down when you reach the top. Do this for 20 seconds, rest for 10 and repeat a further two times. Shadow Boxing: Punch alternative arms as fast as you can for 45 seconds, holding weights if you want to increase the intensity. Jog on the spot for the remaining 15 seconds of the minute.
UK Trails in Global Fitness League It’s official; we in the UK are the least likely to stick to our fitness resolutions. A report by TomTom into attitudes towards achieving fitness goals showed Britain is trailing in both physical and planned exercise leagues. The numbers make for solemn reading, stating nearly 4 in 10 Briton’s never set an exercise target; and of those that do, only 6% ever achieve it. 48% of Brits make a fitness-based resolution but 54% of us fail to stick to it, ouch.
Burpees: Starting in either half or full push up position; perform a push up before jumping your feet in under your chest, finally jump into the air, clapping your hands overhead. Return to the starting position and do as many as you can in 45 seconds. Plank for the remaining 15 seconds of the minute.

FIRST CLASS
CRETE By Matt Blackwell
www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
49 WHAT
FOR WINE LOVERS: Crete has 11 indigenous grape varieties and the Winemakers Network joined together in 2007 to elevate Cretan wine to its rightful position. We visited the family-run Paterianakis Winery to learn more about their work and most importantly, taste it. www.paterianakis.gr FOR FOODIES: Set within the beautiful ancient market village of Archanes, Kritamon restaurant is a must for anyone who’s serious about food. Chef Patron Dimitris Mavrakis’ cooking portrays the character of Crete and Dimitris works in conjunction with the Aldemar group to promote the area as a destination for gastronomic tourism. www.kritamon.gr/en/
Our base for exploring the supposed birthplace of the king of the Greek gods Zeus was an appropriate one: the Aldemar Royal Mare, which is indeed fit for royalty. And I say explore but in reality, with 25 shared and private outdoor pools, six restaurants, four bars, a small shopping mall, access to a private beach and a Thalasso Spa Centre that’s listed amongst the top ten in the world; you’d be easily forgiven if you neglected to leave the comforting bubble of the hotel complex for the entire duration of your stay. We are talking serious luxury here.
FOR HISTORY LOVERS: With the ancient Minoan civilisation on your doorstep, history buffs really are spoilt for choice! We visited Knossos Palace, the religious and economic centre from which King Minos is thought to have reigned in the Bronze Age and the fabled home of the mythical Minotaur.
The junior suites we were allocated are like small hotels unto themselves, with two bathrooms and a main sitting area, leading through to a huge double bed and ample balcony space. An insider tip: if you specify a ground floor suite you will have access to a private pool, shared only with your neighbour; lush. Cretans take huge pride in their food and the focus is very much on healthy gourmet eating. This ethos extends to each of the hotel’s restaurants and whether it’s a wholesome Mediterranean meal at the gourmet Candia restaurant, a light breakfast at the traditional Greek El Greco or just a snack overlooking the waves at the Albatros Beach Bar, the food at the Royal Mare is simply outstanding. Weekly cookery lessons with the hotel’s Executive Chef are available (and highly recommended), giving you the chance to steal some of the Mediterranean’s secrets.
FOR SHOPPERS: The Venetian streets and buildings of Heraklion’s Old Town date back to the 13th century and the labyrinth of quaint side streets host a plethora of big name brands as well as smaller, independent gems. Don’t miss out on the fresher-than-fresh seafood available at the restaurants around the harbour.
“A SENSE OF SERENITY GENTLY PERVADES, ENCOURAGING YOU TO LET GO OF LIFE’S WORRIES AND PARTAKE IN A SLICE OF THE UTMOST RELAXATION.”
FOR SPORT LOVERS: Tee off at the Crete Golf club, which is a mere 20 minute drive from the hotel and affords some stunning views of the mountainous island. Alternatively, you can organise a tennis lesson with a top coach on one of the hotel’s seven international-standard clay courts. www.crete-golf.com
Of course the Royal Mare is famed for it’s Thalasso and Spa centre and upon walking through its doors, a sense of serenity gently pervades, encouraging you to let go of life’s worries (you are on holiday after all) and partake in a slice of the utmost relaxation. The centre offers a medley of massages in addition to a number of beauty treatments, however it was the Thalasso treatments, which use seawater as a form of therapy that caught our eye. Over the course of a calming afternoon we were soothingly massaged by jets of water, wrapped with seaweed and experienced the AquaRoyal with its geysers, waterfalls, hydromassage beds and counter-current walkway, emerging revitalised from head to toe. Prices start at £32.50 for a single treatment, for longer stays two to six day packages are also offered.
WHERE
If you’re able to wake yourself from your Thalassoinduced reverie and summon some adventurous spirit, you can always hop into a taxi of an evening and brave the nearby busier resort of Hersonissos. Perennially popular with the Jägerbomb quaffing crowd, the bars and clubs that line the beach remain open way into the small hours of the morning for a dance and a drink. On the other hand though, if you find the thought of bright lights and a pounding bass line mildly terrifying, perhaps whiling the evening away over an elegant cocktail or two in the hotel’s stylish Minos Bar may be more appealing. Yamas.

Lying in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Crete is the southernmost Greek island, historically known as the crossroads of civilisation, owing to its positioning between North Africa, Asia Minor and Europe. All three are said to have left their distinct mark on the island, giving it a unique flavour unlike no other European destination. We sent Matt Blackwell to sample the famed Mediterranean diet as well as some first class Cretan hospitality.

PAPERWORK MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SAVINGS IN 2014 With 2014 now in full swing, many of us will be looking to make the most of what money we have and as New Year’s resolutions go, putting something away for a rainy day is high on the list of hopes for the year ahead. However, with interest rates remaining stubbornly low there’s been little for savers to be encouraged by. Yet there is light at the end of the savings tunnel and Matt Raine, Financial Adviser at Newby Castleman, is on hand to explain some of the options available for savers…
TAX ON SAVINGS INCOME Pensions can qualify for tax breaks, with contributions made up to the level of earnings (or £3,600 if greater) qualifying for tax relief. However, pension inputs exceeding the annual allowance (£50,000 for policy years ending in 2013/14) may be subject to a tax charge.
INDIVIDUAL SAVINGS ACCOUNTS (ISAS) Although ISAs may not seem an attractive option due to the low interest rates available, it is still worth shopping around to find a safe place to put your money. It’s also worth noting that by being flexible on commitments to a 90-day notice period may provide a better rate. Up to £11,520 can be invested in an ISA this tax year, of which up to £5,760 can be invested in cash. 16 and 17-year-olds are able to invest up to £5,760 in a cash ISA. Junior ISAs, for those aged under 18 who do not have a Child Trust Fund account, allow investment of up to £3,720 in 2013/14. All investments held in ISAs are free of CGT.
NATIONAL SAVINGS Income and capital bonds – Interest is liable to Income Tax, but paid gross. Income bonds pay interest (variable) monthly. On capital bonds, the interest (guaranteed for five years) is added to the capital annually. Children’s bonds – Ideal for adults looking to invest some money for anyone under 16. Interest is guaranteed for five years at a time until the holder is 21. The bonds are completely tax-free and are a great way to secure return. Premium bonds – Instead of paying interest, monthly prize draws are held, with the incentive of a tax-free £1 million jackpot and other cash prizes.
ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENT OPTIONS Higher risk but greater tax breaks, investments in the Enterprise Investment Scheme, Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme and Venture Capital Trusts could appeal to those looking for an alternative to the usual. A number of rules and conditions apply to investments made under these schemes.
REMEMBER TO REVIEW With new rates and deals regularly coming onto the market, it is important to review and assess the performance of your savings www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
and investment strategy. It will help you to maximise your potential income and keep your tax liability to a legal minimum. Mary Waring considers:
THE Worry OF RETIREMENT
CALL THE DLUXE TEAM ON 0116 262 0728 For many women, perhaps due to taking time out from work to raise children or after the breakdown of a relationship, the financial reality of retirement can fill them with fear. Mary Waring, independent financial adviser and author of ‘The Wealthy Woman’ thinks the reason many of us put off planning is often because we’re worried we don’t have enough money, and don’t really want to face up to that reality.
So is ignorance bliss? What are the options for when we retire? Mary has met many women who tell her they’re going to rely on the state when they retire. However, this soon changes when they hear that at the minute, the state pension is £5,727.80 per year, equating to a measly £477 per month. After paying all utilities (gas, electric, water, council tax etc) and food, that’s going to leave very little left. Another option could be to rely on an inheritance, but when you consider you have no idea at what age you will receive your inheritance this can be tricky. Your parents could live well past your planned retirement and require specialist nursing care. Chances are the value of their estate will be used to pay for this. So what’s left? Hope and pray? Hardly a comforting strategy when you think that when you get to retirement age it will be too late to do anything about it.The most sensible option, says Mary, is to take responsibility yourself and take whatever action is necessary to save sufficient funds. If you retire in your mid-60s you will probably live for another 20-30 years, so start planning as early as possible to ensure you can continue to do all the things you love to.
Here’s Mary’s advice on how to start: 1) Consider a cash ISA. If you have never saved before this will help you set up a savings habit. However, the interest rate is very small so this option is purely to help you get into the habit of saving. Once comfortable with how much you can save each month, start looking at a stocks and shares ISA, which has the potential for greater growth than a cash account. 2) When you have used your annual ISA allowance (currently £11,520 each year), consider investing in a pension plan; there are significant tax benefits to investing in one. The limits as to how and when you can draw the funds are to ensure that money is actually available for your retirement rather than for use as general savings. www.Mary-Waring.co.uk

PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS TO OVER 50,000 OF THE REGION’S MOST AFFLUENT AND INFLUENTIAL
FAMILY OPEN MORNING 22 MARCH 2014 9:30AM - 12 NOON
OUR LADIES CONVENT ANNOUNCE SPRING OPEN DAYS Choosing the right educational start for your son or daughter is one of the most important decisions in any parent’s life. Your child’s learning journey should be filled with excitement as they develop into fulfilled, well rounded students properly equipped for the next stage of their education, whatever that may be. Our Lady’s Convent School (OLCS), Loughborough, firmly believe that happy, stimulated children learn more and consequently, their staff endeavour to provide a cheerful, family environment where pupils are stretched, not stressed. Small class sizes are guaranteed and the school welcomes boys and girls from age 3 to 11 and a girls’ only senior school (11 to 16) and Sixth Form (16 to 18). In Year 7 girls progress from the coeducational Primary into a single sex senior school, where they are joined by peers from local primary schools. The smooth transition from Year 6 to 7 is well managed to give students the best possible opportunity to settle quickly into the friendly new environment. A noteworthy feature of the senior school and Sixth Form is the carefully crafted balance between hard work and opportunities to get involved in a range of extra-curricular activities, House events and curriculum enhancing visits. With a long tradition of providing an holistic approach to education where students are encouraged and challenged to perform to their best abilities; the School’s strong academic results reflect how well students of all ages respond to this approach. In addition to the open morning, tours can be arranged, providing the opportunity to meet with students, staff and the Headteacher. LEICESTER FOSTERING AND ADOPTION APPEAL FOR MORE APPLICATIONS.
You may not know this, but Leicester is actually home to one of the most successful fostering and adoption services in the East Midlands. The staff at the Friar Lane centre have built up many years experience, helping hundreds of people to become adopters and foster carers for children of al ages. “It can take quite a bit of courage to make that first call,” said Adoption Team Manager Sara Draycott. “The truth is: we really want to say ‘Yes’. If applicants are prepared to make a commitment to a child, we will do our best to help them in every way we can.” Each day brings children of all ages into care and so new carers and adopters from across Leicestershire and the surrounding counties are always needed, especially for older children, sibling groups or for children with additional needs. The majority of applicants who complete their assessment with the City Adoption Team are approved in eight months and successfully placed with a child very soon after. It takes around six months to become a foster carer, but the training and support are still exceptional, with OFSTED consistently rating their level of service as ‘Outstanding’. If you’ve ever wondered about adoption or fostering, the golden rule is: don’t count yourself out before speaking to an experienced advisor. There’s no such thing as an ideal applicant; you can be married, unmarried, single, gay, straight, religious or have no faith at all, in your 20s, 30s, 40s or even older. All kinds of children are waiting for new families and you might be just the person one particular child is waiting for. Drop-in information sessions are available at lunch times and early evenings, for times and dates visit www.leicester.gov.uk/adoption or www.leicester.gov.uk/fostering. 53 NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT OAKHAM SCHOOL
Education and Fulfilment through Challenge and Support
Open Morning OLCS Independent Day School (3-18)
In line with the old mantra of ‘spring is a time for change’, work has recently begun on a new classroom block at Oakham School. The building will be integrated into the current Merton classroom block and provide a central hub for all of the School’s humanities subjects, housing the Geography, Philosophy and Religious Studies departments. The second phase of the build will create a new Business School, accommodating Business Studies, Economics and Politics. The project has been undertaken by the Kettering based GSS Architecture, who are aiming to provide contemporary, state of the art facilities that are ideal for both individual and group-based learning. It’s all go at the school this spring, with a new Sports Pavilion also under construction and plans for a new Music School in the pipeline. Before work could commence on the new classroom block, Archaeologists excavated the site and revealed a medieval fishpond that would have been managed as part of the Oakham Castle estate. Preserved wooden fishing net pegs were recovered along with animal bones and pottery shards dating from the Late Saxon to early modern periods, indicating that the site has been continuously in use throughout Oakham’s history. Construction is now underway, and pupils should be able to enjoy lessons in the new facility by early 2015. www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk

The number of children receiving extra tuition is higher than ever before, with almost one in four parents now paying for extra lessons to ensure they have the greatest chance of winning a place at the best schools. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND spoke to Carey Ann Dodah, Head of Curriculum at Explore Leaning to find out how you can tell if extra tuition is right for your child.
EXAMS ON THE HORIZON From SATs to GCSEs, a little bit of exam coaching never hurt anyone. No matter how old you are, the exam hall is always a daunting environment and can inspire fear and panic in even the most coolheaded among us. A little bit of help when it comes to revision along with pointers on exam technique will ensure your child is as prepared as they can be and has the core competencies covered. CONFIDENCE BOOSTER Some children are too embarrassed to raise their hand at school in fear of ridicule. Group tuition means that your child can mix with a whole new set of children, making friends and mixing with others of a range of ages. If there’s something that your child feels like they particularly need to improve upon, extra tuition can focus on this and, as the saying goes, practice makes perfect – meaning that they will return to school feeling much more confident in a subject they
perhaps felt they weren’t so good at before. It’s all about praise and reward, celebrating when children have done something well – and this includes asking for help. LOVE LEARNING You may hear the words “I hate school!” from time to time, but extra tuition can make children realise that learning is fun! For those children who might be bored by their lessons, extra tuition provides extra stimulation and can push gifted children beyond the classroom comfort zone, brining out their full potential. In a class of 30 it can sometimes be tricky to accommodate for individuals but extra tuition can help your child receive the attention they need. Classes that focus specifically on Creative Writing, Creative maths or ‘Succeed in Secondary’, for example can target individual areas. Explore Learning have centres at both Highcross and Fosse Park, to find out more visit www.explorelearning.co.uk

DINING WHAT’S ON THE MENU FOR 2014?
1 2 3 4
ENGLAND’S GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND If we all try hard enough we can eat our economy back on track! Get behind our home-growing heroes and plumb for craft beers English wines and artisan herbs, spices and other products. Slightly more expensive, but their superior quality easily justifies the outlay.
KEEP IT LOCAL In an extension of the point above, allotments, pop-up restaurants, street food, local food markets and stalls, food clubs and beer and wine tasting clubs are a great way of generating community sprit and also bring the fun and social side back into dining.
GLUTEN-FREE GOODNESS More and more people are cutting gluten from their diet either entirely or occasionally, challenging producers to create delicious products that can stand up (and surpass) their ‘standard’ variants. It’s a market that’s worth £238 million annually and grew by more than 15% last year.
HEALTH AND HAPPINESS Obesity research and worrying projections have thrust what we put into our bodies into the spotlight like never before. It’s imperative that we go straight to the source and get our children’s diet right, with many catering companies working to reduce the calorie and salt content of the food supplied to schools.

Leicestershire Pub Returns to Roots
A new year brings with it a new set of trends in all areas of our lives, and food is no exception. Here are four key areas of focus for 2014.
The Swan – previously known as The Old White Swan – in Newbold Verdon, has had an extensive internal and external refurbishment and has returned to the pub’s original name under new licensees Steve and Bernadette. WE LOVE!
EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT
34 WINDSOR ST We’ve been hearing an awful lot lately about a new village restaurant that’s breaking all the rules and challenging the idea that to eat well you need to eat in the city. Not true, it seems as 34 Windsor St is breaking boundaries and bringing a taste of the big city into Burbage.
Created by Zeffy Thompson who boasts an impressive track record in hospitality from some of the finest establishments in the North West - and Head Chef Sam Owen, the restaurant’s aim is simple: to showcase their passion for food in an informal, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere - it’s “fine food but not fine dining” although, to be fair, the menu does seem very fine indeed with starters such as Pressed pork collar, salt baked pineapple and asian spices and Venison haunch with salt baked celeriac, grain risotto and winter greens. Our mouth’s watering already. For those that like to dine with a difference, 34 Windsor St offers a Chef’s Table for six where Sam designs a specific menu no less than 12 hours before you dine, revealing all 8 courses to the table on the night. It’s at the weekend’s though that 34 Windsor St really invites you

Cook the pasta according to the pack instructions and whilst it’s boiling, roughly chop the shallots, garlic and beetroot. Heat the oil in a saucepan and sauté the shallots for 5-6 minutes until they start to soften. Add the garlic and cook for another 2 minutes. Take off the heat and add the beetroot and sour cream to the pan. Blend the mixture using a hand blender or food processor to a coarse sauce. Taste and season well with salt and black pepper Once the pasta is cooked, drain and return to the pan. Pour the warm sauce over the pasta, tossing to coat well. In a separate bowl dress the rocket with a little oil or your favourite dressing (optional). Scatter the rocket over each plate then top with the beetrooty pasta. Drizzle over any sauce left in the pan and sprinkle over the chives. Top with a few shavings of parmesan. www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
to kick off your shoes and relax. Those wishing to start their weekend in style can enjoy a luxurious champagne breakfast on alternate Saturdays which includes such delights as freshly baked, homemade croissants and scrummy french toast with banana and maple syrup. Sunday diners can enjoy live music alongside a delicious lunch at one of the restaurant’s Sunday Live events, which are proving to be a thoroughly relaxing way to spend an afternoon; perfect with a post dinner cocktail or two. “There’s always something new happening here” laughs Zeffy, “Food is all about creation and enjoyment and we try and put that feeling and passion into every part of our restaurant”, she says before telling me about the sumptuous sounding Afternoon Tea menu... SMALL BUT STRONG Standing at 5 feet 4 inches, weighing in at 56kg, Martine George is not exactly the stereotypical image that springs to mind when the words Power Lifter are mentioned. But in a little over six months she has made the transformation from personal fitness instructor to bronze medal winner at the World Powerlifting Championships 2013. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND’s Sam Hopkins caught up with the petite Leicester girl and former-dancer to talk training, toning and that magical word: legacy. In typical spring fashion, it was wet and windy when we sat down for a chat, but Martine is able to cut through all this with a bright and cheery voice, full of excitement about what the future holds. The conversation flows from her childhood sporting experiences, competing in both athletics and swimming before we arrive at what attracted her to powerlifting initially. “I run fitness classes in the week and strength and size class at the weekends and I just felt that using heavy weights came quite naturally to me. It’s hard, but I really enjoy it. I was told that I’m surprisingly strong for a girl, so I wanted to see how far I could go with it. Powerlifting just seemed like an obvious choice, because it’s all strength based and includes exercises that I like.” Powerlifting consists of Squats, Dead Lifts and Bench Press and many Federations welcome
female lifters due to a lack of women in the sport. “I think the more publicity the sport gets the more encouragement there will be for women to participate, especially as using heavy weights helps burn fat. Lots of women are scared of using heavier weights, but the federations are there to offer coaching.”
The more publicity the sport gets the more encouragement there will be for women to participate Although it turns out that Martine’s great success happened almost by accident, “It’s funny actually, the first event I competed in turned out to be the British Championships! I was totally new and didn’t even realise at the time; otherwise I never would have entered. When I found out, I figured that I might as well give it a go, as it would be good experience regardless and I actually ended www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
up winning, which just goes to show that I have two great trainers in Tony Ward and Delroy Mcqueen, who are both part of Team GB Powerlifting.” Thanks to this surprise victory, Martine qualified for the World Championships in Prague and was asked to represent Team GB, going on to win bronze. “I approached it exactly the same as any other competition, but I really didn’t expect to win a medal, it was amazing.” Through her success, Martine hopes to act as a role model for other women, proving that they can maintain a feminine shape and figure, whilst still training hard in the gym. “I wanted to show that I could compete and lift heavy weights, without my body changing drastically. I don’t take whey protein or anything like that.” As for the future, well Martine doesn’t have any plans to relinquish her titles just yet, but does have a few interesting ideas in the pipeline. “I’ll probably just keep going and going! In general, Powerlifting tends to be an older person’s sport and some people compete in their 50s and 60s. I’d like to think that I’ll still be British Champion when I’m 60!” Martine is currently in a competition to become the face of JD Sports and is looking into expanding her current business and opening her own gym in Leicester, a milestone she plans to celebrate with a showpiece demonstration of strength which will see her pull her own car!
