Oh to be on a beach! The harsh winter we were all predicting has well and truly been a windy washout although we should be thankful that the only snow we’ve seen has been lining the black and red runs of Sochi at the 2014 winter Olympics. Well done to all those who competed in what was a truly enjoyable extravaganza of winter sports. Packing our unused snowshoes away it’s time to turn our attention to spring and the promise of a better climate. We really are hoping that March will be true to form and arrive like a Lion and leave like a Lamb although that still does leave us with April showers to contend with! Fear not though as this issue we’ve a huge amount of activities suitable for both rain and shine including a special feature on what’s happening across the county to keep younger readers occupied over the Easter break on page 54.

Older readers have not been left out as we have our full events guide starting on page 58 and focusing on what’s not to be missed this spring. One of the key shows of the season is the world premiere of new musical Water Babies and we have been lucky enough to chat to leading lady, West End sensation and star of Wicked Louise Dearman, ahead of the show on page 14. It’s a busy issue; we’ve been for a spin in Mercedes’ latest SUV (page 42), popped across for some winter sun at a fabulous five star resort in Crete (page 48) and for those with itchy feet, compiled a pick list of the hottest properties available for sale right now. All of that and of course, this being spring we’ve naturally got our full guide to the season’s trends both in terms of fashion and home styling to keep you ahead of the pack. A new album, a book, a tour and the creation of a whole new character; 2014 is set to be an exciting and busy year for actress Louise Dearman, one of the new breed of West End royalty quenching the UK’s current thirst for quality musical theatre here in Leicester dluxe Leicestershire and Rutland’s Jon Fraser caught up with Louise, fresh from an epic three years in the West End production of Wicked, to talk about what it takes to break into musical theatre, the joys and demands of writing her first book as well as the challenge of creating a whole new character in Water Babies a new musical premiering at Curve this April. It’s a cold, foggy day in the dluxe offices when we finally manage to catch up with Louise Dearman. With a hectic schedule and no time to chat at the recent launch of Water Babies at Curve, Louise instead opts to calls us post-hair appointment from a London coffee shop. “I’ve gone back to blonde”, she says with an audible smile in her voice and immediately the grey Leicester fog seems to shrink away at the sound of her sunny enthusiasm. “I’ve literally just finished Wicked. I played Elphaba for a year and before that, I played Glinda for two years, so it’s very strange to not be in Oz anymore.” She laughs “although there was 10 months inbetween, where I took a break from musicals and released my album ‘Here Comes The Sun’. I also did some live gigs and had a brilliant time, but then I received a lovely phone call asking what I would think about coming back to sing for Elphaba.” The offer of playing both lead roles in such a big show is unheard of and understandably intimidating. “I think my words were ‘Can I sleep on it?’ because it was such a daunting prospect. When I did the show before, of course I looked at Rachel Tucker who played Elphaba and thought ‘I would love to give that a go’.” Despite her reservations Louise’s portrayal brought won rave reviews “It all worked out and I had the most incredible time, so I feel very blessed to have played both roles.”

the same love-interest and differing view points on the Wizard’s corrupt government, all of which ultimately lead to Elphaba’s public fall from grace. It’s a story about growth, change and acceptance and I ask Louise if her own early start in theatre (she started dancing at the tender age of 3), helped her in her portrayal of both characters? “I’m not sure, I really don’t have a showbiz family at all. I think people believe that if you have been in theatre for a long time then your family is probably quite ‘stagey’. My family is very grounded which has kept me very grounded.”

Although her family life may not have been theatrical, her CV reads like the ultimate stage apprenticeship. “I’ve done a lot of touring, I’ve done a lot of understudying, I’ve been a ‘swing’ which means covering up to eight ensemble roles - so I think I have had to work my way up. I’m still learning now, but being in the West End playing the lead role was what I wanted to do since I began in this career. Wicked definitely taught me a lot but Guys and Dolls, where I performed as Sarah Brown at Donmar Warehouse, taught me a huge amount about acting. I think that was the first moment I stopped thinking about myself as a singer, or a theatre performer, and thought of myself as an actress – it was a great learning curve.” So what of today’s current crop of West End hopefuls? With musical theatre currently enjoying the spotlight thanks to TV shows such as Glee, Smash and any number of Andrew Lloyd Webber talent spotting shows, is it harder now to break through and get noticed or easier? “That’s such a tough question” Louise sighs, “T here have been so many opportunities, like the Andrew Lloyd Webber television competitions, Finding Jesus, Maria and all those programmes. In fact Lauren Samuels who is also in Water Babies was part of that and I think it has opened up the door for many people. I think what’s harder nowadays is developing and becoming a Musical Theatre ‘star’, if you like. People like Michael Ball, Ruthie Henshall, all these artists are big names in Musical Theatre, but the number of ‘stars’ is becoming smaller and smaller, unfortunately.”

Being cast in such opposing roles naturally brings into question your own characteristics, so which role did Louise think suited her best? “Oh” she sighs, “There are parts of me in both Glinda and Elphaba; I love being the girly-girl and I do like dressing up and letting my hair down like Glinda. However the parts of Elphaba that most connected with me is that she sticks up for other people, she’s very compassionate and believes in doing what’s right. Wicked has been a runaway success around the world. The story follows the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the North), who struggle with opposing personalities, rivalry over

16 So what’s the best way to learn your craft? “I’ll never regret the way that my career came about. I think it was good for me to develop very slowly and to do smaller productions, to watch and learn from other people and gradually work my way up. I think it’s tougher when young people are thrust into the limelight and you’re the big name out there playing the lead roles - it’s kind of ‘what happens next?’ once all that interest is gone. I’m 35 this year and I think I’m in a really good place. I genuinely feel like now is the right time for me, as frustrating as it may have been years ago when I wanted it all to happen there and then. Louise will no doubt have to call upon all her years of experience for her next challenge, that of bringing life to the character of Mrs D in the new musical adaption of the much loved book and film Water Babies. “I’m looking forward to so many things; literally creating a role is something that I’ve wanted to do my entire career. I actually got to see my costume designs for the first time the other day and we got to talk about some of the special effects they’re going to be using, which just made it even more exciting. I’m just dying to see how they are going to do the special effects to give the feeling that you are underwater. I believe there are going to be lots of futuristic projections and there will be real water in the show as well, although they’ve told me I don’t get too wet, they save that for the other guys” she laughs, “it’s definitely going to be an all guns blazing spectacle.” The key to the success of any new musical is the strength of its score. So what can we expect from Water Babies? “Well Lauren Samuels and I have released one of the songs from the show ‘Waiting For You’, which has gone down really well so I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into the other big songs. I know there is at least one other really big number, a big deeper ballad that I’m looking forward to singing.” “There’s a great fusion between musical theatre and contemporary sound within the score. It’s not trying to be a pop musical, but it definitely has a more modern and contemporary edge, which lots of young fans enjoy. The great thing about Water Babies is that it’s open to all ages; the original was very much aimed at young children with a lead character who was only seven years old, but in this production he’s seventeen; it’s all aimed quite a bit higher. It’s a fantasy that ages 8-80 will be able to enjoy.” So what of Mrs D, the role which Louise is busy creating? “Well I’m still learning lots about Mrs D!” Louise laughs, “Every time we get to chat to Ed Curtis and Chris Egan [the show’s Director and Composer] we are getting more and more excited because we are hearing so many different things that are still being developed and written. Lauren, Tom or myself will sing something and Chris will say “Okay, I didn’t think of it that way but I actually really like that”. It’s great to be part of that and be part of the creative process as well.” So what preparation has Louise been able to do? “Well as soon as I heard about it I read the original book and re-watched the movie. If you know the story she’s a very mystical and a fairy like character. From reading the script I’m really looking forward to the fact that she appears in so many different forms and in different scenarios, she’s almost like an older sister character to Tom. There is definitely something very magical about her though. It’s quite weird actually, because when you take over a role you always try to put your own stamp on it and do things differently to the actress who played the role previously, but to have no reference is quite daunting but very exciting.” The show is set to run from April 24th to May 17th at Curve and represents yet another high profile premier at the venue. “Places like Curve have such a buzz, it’s a prestigious place to work and the perfect place to try out new things. What I do know is that the production

at Leicester Curve will be at the same level for when it hopefully transfers to the West End. Although a run at the West End is by no means guaranteed, from what we have seen of the show so far, it appears to have all of the necessary ingredients to be a huge success. So what does the future hold for Louise? Another magical and mystical character perhaps? Louise laughs “I’m always looking for new challenges and at the moment I’m writing a book with my friend Mark Evans who’s currently touring the US in ‘The Book of Mormon’. It’s called ‘The Secrets of Stage Success’ and is basically a guide to all things Musical Theatre for anyone who wants to perform, whether as a hobby, or to train professionally. We are furiously writing as much as we can at the moment and it’s meant to be fun and informative; we don’t want to preach to people!” Preaching is something I am sure Louise will not be found guilty of, as we wind up our conversation I’m struck by how warm, genuine and enthusiastic she is. With rehearsals and performances Louise will become a Leicester resident for almost three months, “You’ll have to say hello when I come to Leicester. I have no idea where I’m living yet though” she laughs, “all I’ve heard is the shopping’s really good!”

First impressions count: If a potential purchaser is put off before they’ve even walked through the door then you’re doomed. Take a look at the outside of your home as a stranger might see it. First impressions can make or break, so invest some time and energy in your garden. A pretty pot by the front door never hurt anyone!

Odour: It may seem minor, but the aroma of your house is important when selling. A discretely hidden diffuser will do the trick. Some people advise offering coffee and freshly baked bread, but when it could take a few weeks to sell your home; you can’t always turn on the bread-maker at the drop of a hat.

However, if you don’t want to put your faith in such a futuristic sounding contraption, you could always follow these good old-fashioned tips to make sure your house is ready!

Clean and tidy: Obvious to most but not to all. Who wants to be shown round a bombsite, let alone buy one? Clear the clutter, load the dishwasher, make the beds and clean the bathroom; it’s not rocket science! Temperature: Taking a prospective buyer into a house that has sat empty for the weekend without the heating on is going to put them off instantly. Keep things ticking over at a pleasant 15-20°C; this will prevent your pipes bursting and ensure the agent won’t have to hand round the Thermos and blankets whilst viewing!

Garden: A rear garden does not have to be pristine but as with the house, tidiness is an asset. As your potential buyer gazes from the master bedroom over the garden they would like to see cut grass, trimmed borders and a dash of greenery. Although not always possible at this time of year, the effort is always extremely obvious. Turn to page 26 for our gardening tips!

Problem areas: It’s quite possible there’s part of your house that you’d rather not draw attention to, perhaps somewhere that is mid-repair. Try and get any problems fixed before you enter into the market however, if this isn’t possible, at least advise your agent as to how the issue could be fixed in order to reassure a potential buyer.

Brief the agent: They’re not mind readers and the better prepared the Estate Agent is to answer questions about your house, the easier it will be to sell. It can be embarrassing if whoever conducts the viewing fumbles with the iPad entry system, drop down cinema or fancy lighting rig, so make sure they’re in the know! Figures out at the end of February have shown mortgage lending for the year at its highest level since 2007. These figures, from the Council of Mortgage Lending (CML), highlight the assistance given by the government’s Help to Buy Scheme. GARDENING With James Brewer

Place varieties such as ‘Vibernum Dodnantense Dawn’ in the centre of a border and you’ll be greeted with this shrub flowering in March and its heady perfume is very much welcome this time of year.

Vibernum James may be new to dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland magazine, but he’s no stranger to garden design and construction- he’s been designing gardens of all sizes and styles for nineteen years now and we’ve been lucky enough to secure his services as our Gardening Editor. James will be contributing ‘how to’ articles regarding garden design as well as seasonal action plans to keep your garden flourishing with colour and life no matter what the time of year. From humble beginnings having to borrow his parents tools, James’ passion has grown into a sustainable and established business, developing over the past 19 years to incorporate aspects of garden design, something which set James’ creative side alight. Pergolas, Gazebos, lighting and second terraces have become second nature to James and he has become an expert in design, creating gardens to the highest standards of longevity. Alternatively, try planting a pair of ‘Vibernum Tinus’ near the main entrance to your home; it responds well to pruning so can be shaped into a more formal globe. You’ll be greeted with lush rich evergreen foliage and a delicate blossom, laced with an amazing perfume that makes leaving the house an absolute pleasure, even on the dreariest of days.

SPRING’S MUST HAVES With spring pretty much on our doorstep, it is the perfect time to invest some love into your garden, nurturing it to ensure that when the sunshine comes (and it will come), it is a thing of beauty. Here you’ll find the plants that, in my opinion, simply need to be in every good garden, those unsung heroes of the planting border which blossom and bloom far above others. If your garden is lacking in any of these, it’s definitely time to go shopping!

Foxglove /Digitalis Referred to as a weed as recently as the 1960s, they flower mid-to-late spring and will attract much needed wildlife to the garden. These are among my favourites, with the white variety in particular offering a great splash of colour for the border. Foxglove normally reverts to its stronger gene and changes colour after a few years which provides the perfect excuse to get some more. Just be aware children shouldn’t eat these and to prevent this, I plant them towards the back of the border and have them growing through larger shrubs, which act as supports for this tall majestic biannual.

Snakes Head Fritillary

Worth noting for the wow factor they instantly bestow upon any garden in spring, Snakes Head Fritillary bulbs and flowers always bring a smile. The pendula flower has no scent, but its vibrant colours include shades of pink, purple or pure white and help it to stand out from the crowd despite its size. Personally, I plant these into the lawn as their flowering generally coincides with the lawn’s first cut of the year. Their delicate little nodding heads look amazing amid a sea of lush green grass.

Another overlooked garden gem, Daphnes are small and perfectly suited to the front of the border or by paths and doors. I always plant these in clumps of 3 –5 for best effects and various varieties flower in winter and spring.

Over the past few years we’ve become increasingly fascinated with craft and craftsmanship. Anything with a handmade look or feel is a sure-fire winner! 6

Ferns Varieties such as Dryopteris Felix-Mas are perfect in those damp shaded corners of the garden or under trees. Their skyward searching leaves always look vibrant and full of life. They’re not all deciduous either, Dryopteris can be semi-evergreen and evergreen too.

Spring/Summer 2014 Trends BRAIDED BEAUTY

This season braids hit the catwalks bringing back new textured appeal to the classic plait. Giles saw Braveheart inspired braids take centre stage with a knotted quality to them to create a nuanced disheveled finish. Whilst at Tabernacle Twins, hair was pushed to one side and cleverly plaited scalp braids crept from the ear upwards to give the look of a fauxundercut.

The bun has always been a style-staple gracing the runways season after season, but this spring/summer 2014 saw a modern twist on this well-loved classic. Models hit the runway at Tata Naka with precision centre partings offset by beautifully sculpted ballet buns pinned carefully in place at the back of the head. To add a dynamic take to the knot, elastics were placed through the middle so that when removed, buns took on a cantaloupe-like shape. Ekaterina Kukhareva saw Japanese Zen with an element of Geisha. Kitsch coiffured double knots stormed the catwalk, inspired by the Japanese Maiko, whilst at Pearce Fionda they took on a beautiful shell like quality, carefully moulded high on to the top of the head.

BESPOKE BALLET BUNS To create a whole look the texture of a style is key. Spring/Summer 2014 saw combinations of textures within the hair being used to add depth and distinction to subtly sophisticated locks.

DUALITY OF TEXTURE

At Jean-Pierre Braganza the look du jour was worked-in texture, with the focus on having slightly unkempt hair with an imperfect centre parting and strands styled behind the ears. Whereas at Ones to Watch, the focus was on incorporating a dry movement and texture at the back with strength at the hairline.

The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to be optionally available with the new-generation permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC, with fully variable torque distribution and rounds off the premium brand’s extensive SUV portfolio; by having four model series (GLA, ML, GL and G). PETS SHIFT POUNDS New research has indicated that pets could be the biggest positive influence on an active lifestyle. Fish4Dogs has found that 90% of us are more likely to exercise if it’s something that our dog can do with us. DIET FAIL A new study has revealed that 50% of women fall off the diet bandwagon within 24 hours of beginning their weight loss crusade. Fitness trends have veered away from slogging it out on the treadmill in recent years, placing high intensity training firmly in the spotlight, and it looks like it’s here to stay. In our ever-increasingly busy lives, finding time to train can seem a nigh on impossible task, so we asked Alexis Fletcher, Personal Trainer at Virgin Active how to make fitness flexible, fast and focused. Squat Jumps: Stand with your feet hip width apart, push your hips back and jump as high as possible, landing in a squat position. Perform as many of these as you can for 30 seconds and then jog on the spot for one minute. Stair Sprints: This one’s simple. Find some stairs and run up them two at a time, jogging back down when you reach the top. Do this for 20 seconds, rest for 10 and repeat a further two times. Shadow Boxing: Punch alternative arms as fast as you can for 45 seconds, holding weights if you want to increase the intensity. Jog on the spot for the remaining 15 seconds of the minute.

UK Trails in Global Fitness League It’s official; we in the UK are the least likely to stick to our fitness resolutions. A report by TomTom into attitudes towards achieving fitness goals showed Britain is trailing in both physical and planned exercise leagues. The numbers make for solemn reading, stating nearly 4 in 10 Briton’s never set an exercise target; and of those that do, only 6% ever achieve it. 48% of Brits make a fitness-based resolution but 54% of us fail to stick to it, ouch.

Our base for exploring the supposed birthplace of the king of the Greek gods Zeus was an appropriate one: the Aldemar Royal Mare, which is indeed fit for royalty. The centre offers a medley of massages in addition to a number of beauty treatments, however it was the Thalasso treatments, which use seawater as a form of therapy that caught our eye. PAPERWORK MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SAVINGS IN 2014 With 2014 now in full swing, many of us will be looking to make the most of what money we have and as New Year’s resolutions go, putting something away for a rainy day is high on the list of hopes for the year ahead. However, with interest rates remaining stubbornly low there’s been little for savers to be encouraged by. TAX ON SAVINGS INCOME Pensions can qualify for tax breaks, with contributions made up to the level of earnings (or £3,600 if greater) qualifying for tax relief. However, pension inputs exceeding the annual allowance (£50,000 for policy years ending in 2013/14) may be subject to a tax charge.

INDIVIDUAL SAVINGS ACCOUNTS (ISAS) Although ISAs may not seem an attractive option due to the low interest rates available, it is still worth shopping around to find a safe place to put your money. It’s also worth noting that by being flexible on commitments to a 90-day notice period may provide a better rate. Up to £11,520 can be invested in an ISA this tax year, of which up to £5,760 can be invested in cash. 16 and 17-year-olds are able to invest up to £5,760 in a cash ISA. Junior ISAs, for those aged under 18 who do not have a Child Trust Fund account, allow investment of up to £3,720 in 2013/14. All investments held in ISAs are free of CGT.

NATIONAL SAVINGS Income and capital bonds – Interest is liable to Income Tax, but paid gross. Income bonds pay interest (variable) monthly. On capital bonds, the interest (guaranteed for five years) is added to the capital annually. Children’s bonds – Ideal for adults looking to invest some money for anyone under 16. Interest is guaranteed for five years at a time until the holder is 21. The bonds are completely tax-free and are a great way to secure return. Premium bonds – Instead of paying interest, monthly prize draws are held, with the incentive of a tax-free £1 million jackpot and other cash prizes.

ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENT OPTIONS Higher risk but greater tax breaks, investments in the Enterprise Investment Scheme, Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme and Venture Capital Trusts could appeal to those looking for an alternative to the usual. Mary Waring, independent financial adviser and author of ‘The Wealthy Woman’ thinks the reason many of us put off planning is often because we’re worried we don’t have enough money, and don’t really want to face up to that reality.

So is ignorance bliss? What are the options for when we retire? Mary has met many women who tell her they’re going to rely on the state when they retire. However, this soon changes when they hear that at the minute, the state pension is £5,727.80 per year, equating to a measly £477 per month. After paying all utilities (gas, electric, water, council tax etc) and food, that’s going to leave very little left. Another option could be to rely on an inheritance, but when you consider you have no idea at what age you will receive your inheritance this can be tricky. Your parents could live well past your planned retirement and require specialist nursing care. Chances are the value of their estate will be used to pay for this. So what’s left? Hope and pray? Hardly a comforting strategy when you think that when you get to retirement age it will be too late to do anything about it.The most sensible option, says Mary, is to take responsibility yourself and take whatever action is necessary to save sufficient funds. If you retire in your mid-60s you will probably live for another 20-30 years, so start planning as early as possible to ensure you can continue to do all the things you love to.

Here’s Mary’s advice on how to start: 1) Consider a cash ISA. If you have never saved before this will help you set up a savings habit. However, the interest rate is very small so this option is purely to help you get into the habit of saving. Once comfortable with how much you can save each month, start looking at a stocks and shares ISA, which has the potential for greater growth than a cash account. 2) When you have used your annual ISA allowance (currently £11,520 each year), consider investing in a pension plan; there are significant tax benefits to investing in one. The limits as to how and when you can draw the funds are to ensure that money is actually available for your retirement rather than for use as general savings. www.Mary-Waring.co.uk

LEICESTER FOSTERING AND ADOPTION APPEAL FOR MORE APPLICATIONS.

You may not know this, but Leicester is actually home to one of the most successful fostering and adoption services in the East Midlands. The staff at the Friar Lane centre have built up many years experience, helping hundreds of people to become adopters and foster carers for children of al ages. “It can take quite a bit of courage to make that first call,” said Adoption Team Manager Sara Draycott. “The truth is: we really want to say ‘Yes’. If applicants are prepared to make a commitment to a child, we will do our best to help them in every way we can.” Each day brings children of all ages into care and so new carers and adopters from across Leicestershire and the surrounding counties are always needed, especially for older children, sibling groups or for children with additional needs. The majority of applicants who complete their assessment with the City Adoption Team are approved in eight months and successfully placed with a child very soon after. It takes around six months to become a foster carer, but the training and support are still exceptional, with OFSTED consistently rating their level of service as ‘Outstanding’. If you’ve ever wondered about adoption or fostering, the golden rule is: don’t count yourself out before speaking to an experienced advisor. There’s no such thing as an ideal applicant; you can be married, unmarried, single, gay, straight, religious or have no faith at all, in your 20s, 30s, 40s or even older. Open Morning OLCS Independent Day School (3-18)

In line with the old mantra of ‘spring is a time for change’, work has recently begun on a new classroom block at Oakham School. The building will be integrated into the current Merton classroom block and provide a central hub for all of the School’s humanities subjects, housing the Geography, Philosophy and Religious Studies departments. The second phase of the build will create a new Business School, accommodating Business Studies, Economics and Politics. The project has been undertaken by the Kettering based GSS Architecture, who are aiming to provide contemporary, state of the art facilities that are ideal for both individual and group-based learning. It’s all go at the school this spring, with a new Sports Pavilion also under construction and plans for a new Music School in the pipeline. Before work could commence on the new classroom block, Archaeologists excavated the site and revealed a medieval fishpond that would have been managed as part of the Oakham Castle estate. Preserved wooden fishing net pegs were recovered along with animal bones and pottery shards dating from the Late Saxon to early modern periods, indicating that the site has been continuously in use throughout Oakham’s history. SPRING TREATS The winter warmers are back in the cupboard for another year, to be replaced by some light and airy spring treats. We bring you the perfect accompaniments for a deliciously healthy spring feast.

ROAST SHALLOT AND BROAD BEAN COUS-COUS

Serves 4 Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Ingredients: 8 shallots, peeled and halved 1 tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp smoked paprika 200g cous-cous 300ml vegetable stock 200g broad beans Grated rind and juice of 1 small lemon 150g feta cheese, crumbled (optional) Handful chopped fresh mint Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 190oC/Gas 5. Put the shallots in a small roasting tin and drizzle with the oil. Season with salt and pepper and roast for 10-15 minutes, until tender and golden. Put the cous-cous in a bowl and stir in the paprika. Pour over the stock and cover with cling film. Set aside for 10-15 minutes. Cook the broad beans in boiling salted water for 2-3 minutes, until tender. Drain and refresh under cold running water. Slip the beans out of their grey skins. Fluff up the cous-cous and stir in the beans, lemon rind and juice, mint, shallots and feta (if using).

REGINETTE PASTA WITH BEETROOT AND SOUR CREAM SAUCE Serves 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Ingredients: 280g Reginette pasta 4 shallots 2 cloves garlic 1 pack cooked beetroot, dipped in vinegar 2 tsp olive oil 200ml low fat sour cream 2 large handfuls rocket Small bunch Chives, finely chopped Salt and pepper To serve (optional) Your favourite salad dressing / drizzle of oil Parmesan shavings

Created by Zeffy Thompson who boasts an impressive track record in hospitality from some of the finest establishments in the North West - and Head Chef Sam Owen, the restaurant’s aim is simple: to showcase their passion for food in an informal, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere - it’s “fine food but not fine dining” although, to be fair, the menu does seem very fine indeed with starters such as Pressed pork collar, salt baked pineapple and asian spices and Venison haunch with salt baked celeriac, grain risotto and winter greens. Our mouth’s watering already. For those that like to dine with a difference, 34 Windsor St offers a Chef’s Table for six where Sam designs a specific menu no less than 12 hours before you dine, revealing all 8 courses to the table on the night. It’s at the weekend’s though that 34 Windsor St really invites you

Cook the pasta according to the pack instructions and whilst it’s boiling, roughly chop the shallots, garlic and beetroot. Heat the oil in a saucepan and sauté the shallots for 5-6 minutes until they start to soften. Add the garlic and cook for another 2 minutes. Take off the heat and add the beetroot and sour cream to the pan. Blend the mixture using a hand blender or food processor to a coarse sauce. Taste and season well with salt and black pepper Once the pasta is cooked, drain and return to the pan. Pour the warm sauce over the pasta, tossing to coat well. In a separate bowl dress the rocket with a little oil or your favourite dressing (optional). Scatter the rocket over each plate then top with the beetrooty pasta. DAVE O’HIGGINS QUARTET 7 May @ The Y Theatre Leicestershire company Luscious Plum recently held a one day special “popup shop” in the luxurious surroundings of the Old Hall at Brooksby. Local artists and makers took part and each donated a fabulous prize for the charity raffle. Guests were able to purchase elegant and unusual gifts and the grand total raised on the day was an impressive £1,513.50, presented to Rainbows as part of their accumulator challenge. It wasn’t all shopping though, with local companies holding workshops showcasing their talents. Watercolour artist Andrew Geeson was on hand to demonstrate his unique technique, bespoke milliners Hats from the Hall, shared how to use traditional hatmaking techniques and The Belvoir Flower Co filled the room with seasonal scents, demonstrating how to effectively decorate your home with fresh flowers. SMALL BUT STRONG Standing at 5 feet 4 inches, weighing in at 56kg, Martine George is not exactly the stereotypical image that springs to mind when the words Power Lifter are mentioned. But in a little over six months she has made the transformation from personal fitness instructor to bronze medal winner at the World Powerlifting Championships 2013. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND’s Sam Hopkins caught up with the petite Leicester girl and former-dancer to talk training, toning and that magical word: legacy. In typical spring fashion, it was wet and windy when we sat down for a chat, but Martine is able to cut through all this with a bright and cheery voice, full of excitement about what the future holds. The conversation flows from her childhood sporting experiences, competing in both athletics and swimming before we arrive at what attracted her to powerlifting initially. “I run fitness classes in the week and strength and size class at the weekends and I just felt that using heavy weights came quite naturally to me. It’s hard, but I really enjoy it. I was told that I’m surprisingly strong for a girl, so I wanted to see how far I could go with it. Powerlifting just seemed like an obvious choice, because it’s all strength based and includes exercises that I like.” Powerlifting consists of Squats, Dead Lifts and Bench Press and many Federations welcome

female lifters due to a lack of women in the sport. “I think the more publicity the sport gets the more encouragement there will be for women to participate, especially as using heavy weights helps burn fat. Lots of women are scared of using heavier weights, but the federations are there to offer coaching.”

I was totally new and didn’t even realise at the time; otherwise I never would have entered. When I found out, I figured that I might as well give it a go, as it would be good experience regardless and I actually ended www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk

up winning, which just goes to show that I have two great trainers in Tony Ward and Delroy Mcqueen, who are both part of Team GB Powerlifting.” Thanks to this surprise victory, Martine qualified for the World Championships in Prague and was asked to represent Team GB, going on to win bronze. “I approached it exactly the same as any other competition, but I really didn’t expect to win a medal, it was amazing.” Through her success, Martine hopes to act as a role model for other women, proving that they can maintain a feminine shape and figure, whilst still training hard in the gym. “I wanted to show that I could compete and lift heavy weights, without my body changing drastically. I don’t take whey protein or anything like that.” As for the future, well Martine doesn’t have any plans to relinquish her titles just yet, but does have a few interesting ideas in the pipeline. “I’ll probably just keep going and going! In general, Powerlifting tends to be an older person’s sport and some people compete in their 50s and 60s. I’d like to think that I’ll still be British Champion when I’m 60!” Martine is currently in a competition to become the face of JD Sports and is looking into expanding her current business and opening her own gym in Leicester, a milestone she plans to celebrate with a showpiece demonstration of strength which will see her pull her own car!
