Letter Editor from the
I’m writing this on the first day of the Autumn Equinox. In lay terms, it’s the start of the dark nights drawing in and the slide toward Christmas. By anyone’s admission, we’ve had a great summer; simmering hot at times. Beautiful. In fact, I found myself remarking recently that I was ‘looking forward to a bit of rain’. I will kick myself about this utterance in months to come, I know, but it’s true.
Autumn brings with it darker nights, colder days but the flipside is, in fashion and interior terms, the most exciting new season collections of the year. Designers always go to town with Autumn; they are playful, colourful and fuse function and form, warmth and style. We bring you some of the new season’s hottest new looks for him, for her and for your home. Enjoy. The Autumn season is also, historically, awards season, too and this year is no different. We’ve already seen the British Indian Awards which is a national award and took place recently at Athena in Leicester. There is the annual Leicestershire Tourism Awards to look for, which recognizes those businesses at the top of their industry. Coming soon, too, is the second Rural Business Awards, which dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND were honoured to be part of, as judges. The same with the Midlands Fashion Awards, which celebrates the most exciting new fashion designers; the people we’ll be wearing in years to come. Anyone that thinks picking winners is an easy job should’ve been a fly on the wall during the judging process. Such inspirational applications deserved respect and consideration – and that’s what they got from us and our fellow judges. What these awards do highlight is our continued confidence in the city, countryside and ourselves. More than LCFC’s league title; more than King Richard III, the city and community is showing that our premier league status is justly deserved and we have always been winners. Aside from the new collections and awards, we also review Maserati’s new SUV; jet off to Prague and Latin America and interview actress Cathy Tyson, who’s also breaking boundaries and traditions with a multi-ethnic Importance of Being Earnest at Curve. And don’t forget: if you haven’t already liked or followed us on Twitter and Facebook, we’d love it if you would. Here you will get daily updates and insider news fresh from our desks. You’ll be a very welcome addition to the 74,179 who already log in every day. Happy Autumn and keep well (and warm), COVER STAR: IMAGE FROM HELEN HOWE ATELIER 2016 Jonathan Fraser Group Editor In Chief

Cuddlery, makers of the multiaward winning hands free baby towel, are on hand to help you create that Instagrammable bath time moment! The original Cuddledry hands free towel, which has been a firm favourite with parents for nearly ten years, stops you getting splashed and leaves you with both hands free to bath, wash and lift your baby without any fuss. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING CATHY
Brought up in Liverpool, Cathy Tyson dropped out of college to pursue an acting career at the city’s Everyman Youth Theatre. It was a wise choice as by the time she was 19 she was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and at 21 she won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film Mona Lisa as well as nominations from the Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards. What’s followed has been an illustrious career in film, television and she now not only acts but runs her own production company, Pitchlake Productions which aims to showcase black and ethnic minority writers and actors in theatre.
on a racial point of view, that may come later in rehearsals but at the moment we’ve just been looking at historical research. I think theatre goers are used to seeing different representations,; audiences can be quite open to seeing different interpretations, especially with classics; although I‘m kind of aware that it takes people a long time to get their heads around something. I think they would be more disappointed if I didn’t fulfil the part right or if they couldn’t hear what I was saying, if I didn’t do an interesting portrayal. I think sometimes, only sometimes, the thought comes up in my mind that I better show people that I can do this. There’s still that feeling of representation, representing more than myself which is a burden and a responsibility that you carry. I’m not going to try and complicate this, I played Ophelia when I was 23 and this has been my entire career, I played Portia at the Birmingham Rep, so this is something that has been happening in my career all the way through. I think with Lady Bracknell there is an expectation of Edith Evans and her famous portrayal.”
Dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland’s Jonathan Fraser caught up with her ahead of her appearance as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s classic The Importance of Being Earnest at Curve to talk about her career, non traditional casting and what theatre needs to do to encourage new audiences.
So do regional theatres have more freedom to create and break boundaries? “There’s a lot of excellence in regional theatre, I have never looked down on theatre beyond London. I came from regional theatre anyway and I go back to it whenever I’m asked, so I have never looked down on it.” Cathy started her career in Liverpool as a teenager at the Everyman Youth Theatre at a time when the theatre had a reputation for staging challenging new work often with a political focus. It was, and still is, a city that is very much connected to its culture but was it full of opportunity for young talent? “Yes there was. At the Everyman Youth Theatre we were exposed to John McGrath plays, Alan Bleasdale plays, Willy Russell plays. I was seventeen then and Liverpool was more deprived back then; there are still areas in Liverpool that are deprived as well but it’s still got its nice spirit attached to it.
“I’ve never sat on a Chaise longue before” says Cathy Tyson, in an accent still tinged with the Liverpool of her upbringing. “Let alone one in a rehearsal room in Battersea!” The Chaise is a prop for Curve’s new production of Oscar Wilde’s satirical The Importance of Being Earnest, directed by Artistic Director Nikolai Foster. Rehearsals have just got under way and the cast are exploring the text, their characters and how they interact. “We’re on our fourth day of rehearsals and we’re on our feet already; we’re still talking things through but we’re up and working through scenes, repeating and adapting them. It’s a great way for people to learn lines. It’s lovely to see how Nikolai works; it’s my first time working with him and it’s a pleasure to watch and to hear; to see how it all comes together.”
“I think theatre goers are used to seeing different representations, audiences can be quite open to seeing different interpretations, especially with classics”
Not only is this Cathy’s first experience of working with Foster but despite The Importance of Being Earnest being such a well-known play it’s her first time working with it or in fact any Wilde text. “I hadn’t read the play before Nikolai sent me the script; I didn’t even know what the plotline was to be honest. I’ve read Arthur Miller’s plays, Tennessee Williams’, Eugene O’Neill’s, Shakespeare and I had read one of Wilde’s short stories, but I wasn’t that familiar with his work. I suppose what I have seen is what has possibly put me off it before is its traditionality. When I have seen it, maybe on a poster, it’s usually been a lot of people of one colour in period costumes. I have felt a little bit alienated by that.” That’s certainly not the case for this production. The show’s cast is certainly more representative of today’s society in that it’s much more ethnically diverse than it was in 1895 when the play was first performed. “As a black actor I haven’t done a lot of period pieces. I have only really done Shakespeare but I think things are changing now thankfully, primarily due to certain theatre directors, Nikolai is one, looking beyond colour. We have a person of African descent playing Jack Worthing; there is someone of Indian descent playing Cecily. I forget about that because we’re just getting involved in the play, we’re not referring to our colour, we’re not even, at the moment, thinking
So how do period plays fit into today’s society? Is a play like the Importance of Being Earnest and its waspish commentary on the ways of the world relevant to an audience in 2016? “I think so. From the point of view of women, our position has changed dramatically since this was written even though this itself was written at a time of change; there was the Education Act of 1870 so that all children went to school and the Married Woman’s Property Act which allowed women to own property. There’s a lot of history is that detailed in the piece, especially about literary history, cultural history and of course there’s still a lot of hypocrisy! I think there is a lot that audiences can draw comparisons with. So what lies ahead after Lady Bracknell? “Well I will be in London in January doing a play for my own production company. Our play is called She Called Me Mother, we’ll be at the Tara Arts Theatre in London for three weeks and then I’m working on a new play which should tour in autumn and in between that I’ll be going for auditions. I have a good agent who is lovely. I’m hoping to be directing as well in November, a friend’s piece. Having looked at Nikolai, watching him work every day just makes me go wow, so I’m really looking forward to that. I’m at an age where I get a zest for trying new things!
The Importance of Being Earnest is at Curve from the 6th to the 29th October. For tickets call 0116 242 3595 or visit curveonline.co.uk

HELLO SKYE|ROSS Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey have been playing across the globe for over a dozen years as Morcheeba however after enjoying their set at the Australian Gold Coast music festival without band mate Paul the duo asked themsleves “Why don’t we make our records feel more live?” The result of this revelation is SKYE | ROSS, an album that pursues its own musical path while returning to the roots of the sound that made Morcheeba a household name back in the late 1990s. It is, Ross explains, “what Skye and I do naturally when you ask us to make music together, and yet not necessarily a continuation of what we’d been doing with Morcheeba. It therefore felt only right to give it a new identity.” Coinciding with their new album, SKYE | ROSS will play a series of UK concerts starting at 30th October in Birmingham at the Elgar Concert Hall. Ultimately, SKYE | ROSS doesn’t signify the end of Morcheeba, but rather a purge of sorts, an opportunity for the two musicians who have represented the public face of their band to exploit the musical relationship that has developed between them outside of the studio on stages around the world. “Our intentions are really aligned,” Ross states, “and once you have that synchronicity with someone everything falls into place.”

Sought after with collectors around the world, ceramics artist Blandine Anderson - returns to Ferrers Gallery to showcase a collection of ceramics that have been created exclusively for the gallery at Staunton Harold, Ashby de la Zouch. Blandine exhibits her work at Ferrers Gallery every two years, and each exhibition has a new theme. This exhibition is an Animal A-Z and Blandine has taken two years to fully research the subject matter with some fabulous outcomes. “Finding a suitable animal to cover every letter of the alphabet has been quite a challenge! I have enlisted the help of friends in order to find some of them.” Explains Blandine. “Every letter of the alphabet has been made at least once, some letters have several different versions. For the more difficult letters U, X and Z - I have had to resort to Latin names and folklore. Sometimes I have used local common names to extend the range of possibilities. Not every animal that springs to mind has necessarily provided me with suitable inspiration - so some obvious candidates have been left out.” Blandine’s work is characterized by her carefully researched and meticulously detailed depictions of animals. The work is created in porcelain or stoneware depending on the size of the piece; with some being around 8cm tall while others like the whales being around 80cm. Blandine uses a selection of glazes to get her signature muted hues. Alongside the ceramics work there will also be a collection of paintings by Blandine, on the same theme.
The exhibition is open 11-5pm until the 23rd October 2016. Entry is free. Ferrers Gallery, Staunton Harold, near Ashby de la Zouch.

Parents considering an independent education for their children are invited to attend the Loughborough Endowed Schools’ Open Morning with their families on Saturday 1st October from 9:00am until 1:30pm. Families will able to tour Fairfield’s brand new school building, including the dedicated Kindergarten unit for three year olds which opened in January. A brand new nursery for children aged from six weeks to four years will also open its doors to visitors for the very first time. The four schools in the Foundation – Loughborough Grammar School, Loughborough High School, Fairfield Preparatory School and Our Lady’s Convent School, are situated on two neighbouring campuses. The family of schools welcomes children from the age of three. Pupils enjoy a first-rate provision for all aspects of their education, including sport, drama and music, in a learning environment with attractive modern facilities. Fairfield Preparatory School and Our Lady’s Convent School’s junior school offer younger children a rich and diverse educational experience in a caring atmosphere, which combines traditional and family values within an enlightened and ever-challenging curriculum. Continuous care is available from 7:45am until 6:00pm.
Children at the senior schools benefit from single-sex teaching environments from ages 10-18 at the Grammar School (boys), and 11-18 at the High School and Our Lady’s Convent School (girls). They also enjoy many of the advantages of co-education by sharing a campus and with the inclusion of some joint lessons and activities in the Sixth Form. Jumping For Joy Event rider, Emma Hyslop Webb has always had a passion for horses, being raised around horses and riding from the age of three. Now with her own Horse Eventing company, Emma is living up her childhood dreams. Dluxe Magazine caught up with Emma to talk all things equestrian, eventing and her latest venture with Lanes Fine Jewellery of Leicester.
When did you realise you wanted to make a career from horse riding? My passion has always been for horses. Whilst working for Cherrie Concanon first as a PA and then head of sales, I used to ride and train horses in my spare time. After working there for twelve years, I decided to go into horses full time, which was around four years ago now. I had one horse when I made the decision to leave and I thought that I was young enough to try and make a career out of it. I thought I could always go back to the corporate world if it didn’t work out. You just need an awful lot of time and dedication to be successful at that level, so I thought that I would be brave to see whether I could make a career out of it.
You went into event riding. Can you tell me about this, what does it entail? So you have dressage which is like ballet for horses really; show jumping where you get them to jump the fences without knocking them down and then cross country riding. The events are all over the UK, Europe and the world.
Event riding is considered a difficult discipline would you agree? It is very difficult as you have to be good in all three phases; you can’t be a jack of all trades unfortunately. You are forever trying to perfect each discipline and that’s why it’s quite an addictive sport as you never reach perfection, but you can always strive to do better.
What do you enjoy about it the most? I enjoy producing horses, I can have a young horse and then have them competing in the Olympics, which is really satisfying. You are teaching a live animal which has its own mind and heart. It can choose if wants to or not. Each day is quite rewarding.
What are your high/low points?
You’re high points are competing at a high level. The low points would be that as horses are fine tuned engines, we have to keep them trained and exercised. Trying to keep a horse at a sound level is very hard: we try to manage them the best we can. I have had injuries where I have broken a few bones and it does take a while to get back on but it does go with what we do; it is very high risk.
Describe life as an event rider? I go out and compete at British dressage competitions, and each time you are getting better. We travel all over Europe competing in Events held at prestigious and beautiful venues. As I do professionally what I used to do in my spare time, it sometimes doesn’t feel like work, but of course it is and it’s often hard. At the moment we have sixteen horses in, which need to be exercised, mucked out etc. It’s not a 9-5. One day we left at three to compete in Hampshire and didn’t get back till 8.30pm in the evening. It’s all full on and lots of fun and games.
Where do you see yourself in the future? I would like to represent the UK and the rest, what will happen will happen. I just want to be the best that I and my horse can be.
You’re launching a networking group; Lanes Ladies with Lanes Fine Jewellers. Where did this idea come from? Carli and I first met at a business networking event where we hit it off immediately. As businesswomen, I think we could both see the passion and drive that we share in our respective careers. I was thrilled to be asked by Carli to become a brand ambassador for Lanes Fine Jewellers - although I am more often in my jodpurs (which are now branded with Lanes Fine Jewellery), I do like to get dressed-up and love to wear beautiful jewellery, so it’s a match made in heaven. We’ve enjoyed making plans and one of our most exciting is the creation of a brand new, exclusive networking event called Lanes Ladies. The idea is that we create special invitation-only events - the first launching at the end of September - where Leicestershire ladies who love the finer things in life and invest in themselves can join us for a private, after-hours shopping experience like no other.

REMY the man:
REMY the brand:
Heralding from Sicily, Remy first exhibited his natural talents whilst being an apprentice with maestro Di Lucca, continued with Di Lucca in Milan, followed by moving to Carita in Paris. By the late ‘60s England began to emerge as the hair fashion capital, and so Remy knew that this is where he must go to further his career.
It was a sad day this summer when Remy passed away, but his legacy will continue and can never be forgotten.
In the UK, Remy worked with companies Vidal Sassoon and Leonard before teaming up with 3 fellow hairdressers to open a beautiful salon; Capelli. By the late ‘70s Remy began an association with the Mascolo Brothers by opening a new salon named “Remy, Toni & Guy” which although was very successful, a few years later Remy decided to follow his own path. Remy soon established himself as one of the most respected names in the industry with his work influencing many of the trends in hair fashion. The “Remy Team” present these new techniques and styles by appearing on the world stages (Europe, USA, Japan and beyond) demonstrating their hair fashion collections in front of sold out venues.
Remy’s dedicated, intense training regime, which must be completed before being allowed onto the salon floor, has been filtered down to the entire “Remy Team” to ensure the client the best standard of hair care in order to achieve an image which both expresses the client’s personality and flatters their appearance. One-half of the new management duo, Director Sho Barber (yes, that is his real surname!), has worked under the close guidance of Remy for 17 years and has graced many international stages alongside Remy at his infamous hair seminars, thus cementing Sho’s knowledge of hair. Remy are also proud to announce two newly qualified stylists ready on the floor, Corey & Shannice, who have both trained under the nurturing guidance of Remy.
Remy was also honoured to take part in the World Hairdressing Congress, which took place at the Albert Hall.
Clients will see a familiar face, Christiano Lanza, return to the salon on a regular basis. Christiano, who completed his apprenticeship with Remy before moving to Sassoon, and now provides educational seminars around the globe providing educational training using his unique talent in colour.
Remy presented with the “Princess Carlotta Award” for his contribution to the industry, and holds the Freedom Of The City” granted for artistic contribution from the cities of Florence & Milan.
The other half of the new management team is Marc Fuccio (Remy’s son/ Director at Remy), who is now a regular face at the salon since taking over the general running of the salon.
These events and lectures showed a glimpse into these new techniques, and an outstanding example of this balance of Avante-Garde and the commercial style:
Remy Hair & Beauty Salon can be found in the elegant conservation area of New Walk, where the Michael Collins design reflects the charm of its environment along the stunning tree lined Victorian promenade.
EG …Razor Cut, which was re-launched with a new slant, resulting in free stokes that didn’t damage the hair.
Marc and the family would like to thank everyone for their continued support over these past few tough and gruelling months.
Channel Cut, the Crest, the Pixie collections, Alternative Bob, Weave, in fact the list is endless, and help create the frame work on which many hairdressers across the world would later base their training. Remy opened more salons in Leicester, Nottingham and Duke Street, London. Opened 2 hair education schools with Vidal Sassoon (London & Leicester) The industry recognised his achievements and was the first Italian to hold the coveted post of Artistic Director of Intercoiffure and twice winner at the British Hair Awards.

SHEARLING COATS:
BUYING at Auction AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE
With their wool interior and collar, shearling jackets are a stylish and warm addition to your autumn wardrobe. Here are some of our favourites...
Auctions are exciting and, for many, a novel experience. If you are venturing into the world of auctions for the first time, we’ve some helpful hints to ensure you get what you want and enjoy your experience whether you are looking to buy jewellery, watches or even a handbag. Do your research If you were buying a car, you would look into comparable models. This is also good practice for buying at auctions. You can access previous sale results in the auctioneers archive, letting you see what similar items have achieved previously. You can also ask an expert - auctioneers are always happy to help. Many people will speak to specialists to help them find exactly what they are looking for.
Viewing Make sure you get a good look at the lot you are looking to purchase. There are high-resolution images on the website and many items will be photographed using 360 degree technology. Viewing in person is also a good idea many sales will be on view for a couple of weeks before the auction so head to the auction house to see everything in the flesh.
Plan your bid The traditional image of a scarily silent auction room is steadily changing. Nowadays people are more likely to bid online, leave absentee bids or bid over the phone than attend an auction in person. These options make auctions far more accessible to the public. You can now keep track of the auction while going about your day to day life.
If at first you don’t success, try, try and try again. Buying at auction isn’t an exact science and sometimes you won’t be successful. Don’t be deterred! Fellows embraces new technologies - you can sign up to get email alerts when new catalogues become available - www.easyliveauction.com lists auctions from all over teh country and lets you bid from home. DOTTY FOR CONDOTTI SPECIAL FEATURE
High end independent boutique, Condotti has recently opened on Francis Street in the leafy Stoneygate area of Leicester. The boutique opened by Pam Dasanjh Coningsby brings high end labels including her own label to the ladies of Leicester. We caught up with owner Pam to discover the inspiration behind the boutique and label. Where did the name Condotti originate from? I’ve always been inspired by Italy and when I visited last year I noticed at the bottom of the Spanish Steps in Rome, the street name Via Condotti, which is famous for its shopping. I loved the name Condotti so I thought why not name it after Via Condotti. So what inspired you to bring your boutique to Leicester? I’ve always been involved in the high-end luxury market, working previously in interiors and previously running other fashion boutiques. It was my two sons Aran and Stefan who said to me that I should follow my dreams, so I decided to do exactly that by opening a high end boutique and own label within Leicester. You’re based within the Stoneygate area which is just outside the city centre. Why did you choose this area rather than the city centre? The area is becoming more of an up and coming street again with the variety of other independent shops here. I wanted to create a destination where women can come enjoy a glass of champagne or coffee and browse the brands that are on offer. I want people to feel comfortable, so if they need advice I am on hand to provide a personal stylist experience. So talk through the layout of the boutique; what brands do you have on offer? I’ve organised the rails, mixing the various brands we have with my own label Condotti, providing an example of what can be worn with what. The labels we stock include Pinko, Paul & Joe, Nicole Farhi, Parosh and Butler & Wilson Jewellery. What is the inspiration behind your own brand, condotti? For me it’s about simple couture cuts, beautiful prints and lovely elegant 34 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
style. Inspiration can range from a particular fabric, a previous style from history or from somewhere I’ve travelled. I then find a cohesive link and take bits from here and there. I primarily get inspired by beautiful prints, cuts and historical pieces worn by Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn for example, as well as what the fashion houses are currently doing. What are you own highlights from your own label, Condotti? I am in the midst of producing bespoke pieces such as long evening gowns. I am going to have a fewaround eight to twelve pieces for ladies to view. I will then ask the client what colours they would like, take her measurements and then
produce the bespoke garment from there. What are you ambitions for Condotti? By spring / summer next year I want everyone to know the name Condotti. I want to put on more events and showcase not only my collection but also the brands we stock for women around the Leicestershire area. I have more collections coming out in the next few months with the Christmas range coming in September and my spring/ summer collection coming out in December. Condotti can be found on Francis Street, Stoneygate, Leicester. LE2 2BE. www.condotti.uk

WINTER WEDDINGS No doubt you’ve splashed out on the perfect venue, the fantastic honeymoon and the bride’s beautiful dress, so now it’s your turn to splash out on the most important suit you will ever own! Choosing a tailor that can evaluate your whole wedding theme can really help your outfit come alive and create an enviable style for your wedding day. A winter wedding is a great time to pull out the classic winter suit options and experiment with different ideas to complement your wedding. Traditional fabrics and colours with subtle modern factors to keep a contemporary look will create the perfect attire for your special day. A classic winter choice is the Tweed three-piece suit. Although known for its rural setting and informal cloth, Tweed is now often seen as a chic, stylish and authentically British choice. A men’s three-piece tweed suit is a good traditional suit, but a tailored three-piece tweed suit is perfection! With many fabric designs available, a modern Tweed suit can fit comfortably in with your wedding theme. 100% wool or wool/cashmere blend suits are great winter fabrics that can offer many colour varieties. There is so much you can do in terms of decor and styling for a winter wedding – rich deep berry tones, greys and icy blues, all of these colours can be incorporated into the suit itself or your suit accessories. A grey tailored three-piece suit with deep red accessories can complement your theme perfectly. Your accessories could include a different colour design on your waistcoat, your cravat or your pocket square and even your button holes. Slight differences in the accessories can make sure the groom stands out from the groomsmen. A slim-fit, single-breasted two-piece is a slick and contemporary choice for the groom who wants to keep things simple, but still look exceptionally sharp. However, classic-fitting doublebreasted or three-piece suits are also timeless classics that make a statement. There are many factors that need to be considered when choosing your wedding suit and the groomsmen outfits. Your bride’s dress, the colour and theme, the destination and your surroundings – all of these will contribute to you making your decision. A good tailor will liaise with members of the wedding party to make sure your suit is the ideal fit not only for you, but for the style of the occasion. For many years you will look back at your wedding photos and remember how good you felt in your wedding suit – nobody wants to look back and think ‘What was I wearing?’ so opting for a perfectly tailored suit that complements your bride and the wedding theme will make sure you never have any regrets!

The Maserati of SUVs WITH THE LEVANTE A NEW WIND IS BLOWING THROUGH THE SUV SEGMENT, GUARANTEEING THE PASSION, THE FLAIR AND THE EXCLUSIVITY THAT COMES WITH THE DISTINGUISHED MASERATI NAME. The Maserati Levante is a turning point in the brand’s history enabling the illustrious Trident access to the largest luxury segment in the world taking on the likes of Range Rover, the Jaguar F Pace and Porsche Cayenne. The name Levante was inspired by a warm, Mediterranean wind that can change from mild to gale force in an instant, mirroring the character of the first Maserati SUV. Although the Levante is based on the current Maserati saloon platform the chassis has been specifically developed around three main pillars: Design, Exclusivity and Performance and the Levante’s design is certainly distinctive whilst still being attractive; it actually achieves the best aerodynamic efficiency in its segment with a Cx coefficient of just 0.31. The Maserati DNA is clearly visible everywhere you look, ensuring that 44 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
the Levante stands out among its competitors. The Levante is immediately recognisable as a Maserati, even from a distance. The muscular shape of the rear haunches gives it a distinctive and attractive Italian style whilst the imposing grille pays homage to historical Maserati models like the Tipo 60 Birdcage. The silhouette of the Levante moves from its feline-inspired headlights along the side of the car to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, resulting in a coupé look that is enhanced by the frameless doors, a feature of every modern Maserati.
the twin-turbo petrol engine and the economical turbodiesel are globally acclaimed for their unique Maserati signature sound and for their exceptional performance.
The thoroughbred on-road handling typical of all Maserati cars has not been compromised thanks to features like the extensive use of lightweight materials, ideal 50-50% weight distribution and its lowest in class centre of gravity.
The Levante is also available with a common-rail, direct injection turbodiesel V6 with reduced dwell time injectors. The 3-litre engine is capable of 275 hp and delivers 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and a 230 km/h maximum speed while keeping the fuel economy as low as 7.2 litres/100 km under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
Engine-wise, the Levante is equipped with the latest evolution of the Maserati 3-litre V6 engines. The two versions of
The petrol Maserati V6 engine with latest GDI and twin-turbo is available in two versions: the top of the range 430 hp and the exciting 350 hp. The most powerful Levante makes it to 100 km/h in 5.2” and has a top speed of 264 km/h, while the figures for the 350 hp version are 6.0” and 251 km/h respectively.
The aluminium “double wishbone - five link” suspension layout is comprised of standard Air Springs and electronically controlled Skyhook shock absorbers. In conjunction with the intelligent Q4 All-Wheel-Drive system and the newly introduced Torque Vectoring system which deliver GT on-road behaviour and surprising - for a Maserati - off-road capabilities: the Levante is designed to deliver best in class comfort on rough roads and handling on snow and ice. The Levante has entered the SUV segment with a marked advantage in terms of new content. The innovative features of the car include: Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Forward Collision Warning and Brake Assist System, Lane Departure Warning, Surround View camera, capacitive 8.4” Touch Screen display with brand new rotary control, plus the AHA function, an addition to the Maserati Touch Control Plus which extends the AM, FM and DAB digital radio with a network connection option: the AHA function dialogues with the user’s network-connected mobile device to give access to on-line services (radio stations, programmes, etc.) while on the move. Inside the Levante has been designed to feel like a first class lounge and, in line with a long Maserati tradition, customers can personalise the interior according to their individual taste. A total of 28 interior colour combinations are available at launch. The dashboard features an 8.4” Touch Screen and the classic Maserati analogue clock is retained and located in the centre of the dashboard. Standard equipment, also includes leather upholstery, Maserati 8.4” Touch Screen, Base Audio System with 8 speakers, cruise control, Hill Descent Control, dual zone climate system, wipers with rain sensor, keyless entry (front doors) and power lift tailgate and buyers can specify between Sport and Luxury packs to create their perfect environment. The Levante is an intriguing and alternative addition to the luxury SUV market with prices starting from £54,355 for the diesel model with first deliveries due to take place from November. The V6 petrol model is due to follow as will a hybrid version. To find out more visit www.maserati.co.uk

A flavour of Latin America
THE MUSIC, THE FOOD, THE LANGUAGE – SPANISH CULTURE HAS FASCINATED PEOPLE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. Bring on the night: Porteños know how to party. Nights out start with dinner no earlier than 10pm; clubs close as the sun rises. Popular spots include Frank’s, where you’ll need a password to get in, and Florería Atlántico, hidden under a flower shop. Learn to tango: Buenos Aires is the birthplace of tango. Its popularity has dwindled with younger generations, but older locals still frequent milongas or tango clubs. La Milonga de los Consagrados is a great place to watch them dance. For professional shows, classic venues like El Viejo Almacén and La Ventana won’t disappoint. If you want to join in, you can take classes at La Catedral.
Nicknamed the “Paris of South America”, Buenos Aires exudes charm and sophistication. Grand tree-lined avenues, glamorous nightlife, a world-class opera house, and packed football stadiums all contribute to this eclectic and elegant city. Beef it up: Steak-lovers – rejoice. Argentina produces some of the world’s best beef, and Buenos Aires is the place to try it. Head to a 46 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
SANTIAGO, CHILE (18 HOURS, 30 MINUTES) Home to more than a third of Chile’s population, Santiago is a bustling metropolis. With a steady economy and two decades of political stability, the city has blossomed into one of Latin America’s best places to live. Drink a bottle or two: Chile’s unique geography and mild climate
Appreciate the architecture: Havana Vieja, or Old Havana, is the best place to see the city’s architectural riches. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, this neighbourhood has hundreds of historic buildings, many of which have been carefully restored. Baroque, Neoclassical, Art Deco – they’re all here. Capitolio Nacional, Edificio Bacardí, and Palacio Cueto are all highlights. See change underway: Havana is changing fast. Its faded beauty remains – car buffs will marvel at the old models still in use, mass development has yet to begin – but perhaps not for long. As Cuba opens up, it’s the perfect place to see entrepreneurship at work. Dine at a paladar or private restaurant, stay at a casa particular or bed and breakfast, visit one of the latest shops or galleries; their owners are charting new territory. Here, you can find large wineries like Concha y Toro, as well as smaller producers like the acclaimed Antiyal vineyard. This region is most famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere wines. Get crafty: Artisanal crafts from throughout Chile can be found in Santiago’s markets. The Santa Lucía craft market is great for cheap, mass-produced souvenirs. For top quality crafts, visit Los Dominicos in the wealthy Las Condes district or the Patio Bellavista in the artsy Bellavista neighbourhood. Seek out alpaca wool garments and deep blue lapis lazuli jewellery. Discover history: The darkest period of Chile’s recent history was the almost 20-year military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Santiago’s Museum of Memory and Human Rights honours the stories and legacies of those tortured. For a lighter side to Chilean history, visit Pablo Neruda’s house in Santiago to learn more about the country’s most famous poet. HAVANA, CUBA (13 HOURS, 15 MINUTES) Colourful, musical and historical, Havana is a capital city caught between the old guard and the modern world. Havana now is already vastly different than Havana two years ago, before the U.S. eased restrictions on its citizens travelling and spending money there. Go now to experience it before it changes completely. Feel the beat: From son to salsa, from rumba to reggaeton, from timba
Cubans in the 1960s to more recent immigration from countries like Colombia, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. Hit the beach: No trip to Miami would be complete without a day or two at the beach. Miami’s easily accessible beaches are great for swimming, sunbathing, kite surfing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, people watching and more. South Beach is famous, Bal Harbour is glitzy, and residential spots like Surfside offer a family vibe. Slightly further afield are the beautiful beaches of Key Biscayne. Fun for the whole family: Children will love Miami. They can play on the beach all day, roller blade down the boardwalk, go biking and canoeing in Oleta River State Park, and catch starfish at Biscayne Nature Center. At night, mum and dad can go out on the town. Check out live music at the legendary club Hoy Como Ayer, or have a cocktail at a bar in one of South Beach’s iconic Art Deco buildings. Eat, eat, eat: Dining in Miami is like a culinary tour of Latin America. You can sample Peruvian ceviche, visit a Brazillian churrascaria for all-youcan-eat meat, or taste test both Colombian and Venezuelan arepas. For Cuban classics, head to Little Havana – breakfast at the historic Versailles bakery, a Cuban sandwich for lunch, and seafood at El Cristo for dinner. czech mate THE CAPITAL OF BOHEMIA PRAGUE Prague, the capital of The Czech Republic, has gone from the back packers’ Best Kept Secret to the stag and hen capital of the old eastern block. Or so we were lead to believe. With Czech Airlines now flying direct from Birmingham Airport dluxe Magazine’s Jonathan Fraser decided to see if there was truth in the rumour that the stags had finally rutted off from the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia… People think I can be a little weird. Take Christmas a few years back for example. I was presented with a dream gift: a vintage and (admittedly) sinister ventriloquist’s dummy (since called Uncle David, don’t ask). He now sits in the corner of the living room, unnerving the more sensitive visitors to my home. It’s fair to say my tastes are left of centre, shall we say. So, killing time on the (actually very quick: 1hr 40mins!) flight from Birmingham to Prague I was thrilled to discover, when leafing through the guide book, a coach 48 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
trip to a church made entirely from skulls and bones. Just my bag and from that point forward, I knew that Prague and I were going to get on. Like most major European cities, Prague is built either side of a large river, the Vltava, and the name of Prague actually originates from the Czech word for ford or river crossing. Settlements here date back to the 9th Century AD with many of the city’s most spectacular architecture still standing from the 14th Century and reign of Charles IV. It’s this monarch that the main bridge connecting the two halves of the city is named after. The Charles Bridge deserves more than a passing comment: not only is it probably the most important and easiest-to-find tourist landmark in the city and with its myriad of craft stalls, beatnik musicians and gothic statues, it’s a must-see. Stroll across the Bridge to the North side and up the hill to the beautiful Prague Castle and gothic Saint Vitus
Cathedral, which look menacingly over into the main old town on the opposite bank. Beware: it’s a steep walk, although well worth doing if you can, as the view is quite breathtaking (in both senses of the word). If all that sounds like too much legwork, stay on the South side and follow the bustling crowds through winding streets filled with tiny theatres, marionette shops (they’re obsessed), restaurants
Boats offers spectacular views but we’d recommend the shorter two hour trip rather than the dining experience- get back earlier and enjoy a long dinner in the city!
and quirky coffee houses and bars which invariably lead you towards the main Old Town square and the medieval Astronomical clock whose moving sculptures perform the ‘Walk of The Apostles’ with each hour chime performed by a statue of the grim reaper himself, pulling on the bell pull. Touristy but fabulous! Another way to see the city is by boat. The evening river cruise by Prague
Wherever you go in Prague, skeletons, devils and witches abound - everything is slightly gothic and ‘dark’, but when mentioning this to our guide from Eating Prague, who organise amazing food and drink trips around the city, any sinister interpretations of this nightmare figures were dispelled; “No, no, the witches are all for good luck. We have them in our kitchens to keep the bad spirits out.” Ok. Why bad spirits would lurk in a kitchen I’m not sure perhaps from the traditional Christmas Day Carp, kept in the bathtub during advent, killed on Christmas Eve and eaten on the big day itself. Speaking of food (and we always are as my other half is food-obsessed), Cuisine and The Czech Republic go surprisingly hand in hand with a vast selection of restaurants for all budgets and tastes. We heartily recommend the Eating Prague tour – mentioned above- as a great way to sample menus, try traditional dishes and discover some great restaurants to visit later in your trip. Back on the streets and with daylight dimming, the gothic architecture of the city comes into its own: with cobbled streets lit by dim gas lamps and brooding statues. It’s all very the Brothers Grimm but not in the least foreboding. Add to this the pools of light spilling from the doorways and
windows of the (many) small and quirky bars and you’ll be under its spell yet further. We were enchanted, that’s for sure. The Czech Republic has a fine reputation for the quality of its beers and you’ll find plenty to choose from in the city’s bars, some of which have their own micro breweries within. Beer is incredibly cheap to buy – the average per capita beer consumption is about 160 litres per year, meaning that Czechs drink more beer than anyone on the planet. If beer’s not your thing then why not try a little of ‘la fee verte’ or Absinthe, which is still made in the Czech Republic - perfect before a moonlit stroll amongst the streets, although it might make the statues come to life if you have too much!

N a d i ya H u s s a i n S TA R s A T T H I S Year’s BBC Good Food Show Last year Nadiya Hussain was crowned the winner of The Great British Bake Off. Since then she has release d a cookbook and a documentary, The Chronicles of Nadiya. Ahead of her appearance at the BBC Good Food Show, Nadiya discusses her favourite dishes and what she is most looking forward to at the show. What is your favourite dish to cook? I love one pot dishes. So a chicken tagine, with preserved lemons and dates. Served with lemon couscous.
What is your top tip for festive cooking? Try and do as much in advance. I like to pre prep anything that can be done and then par cook anything that can be finished off last minute. I always par cook/blanch my roasties and then freeze them and cook again in fat to get them really crispy. What is your most treasured item in the kitchen?
My favourite thing in the kitchen has to be my micro plane!! I can’t believe how well those things grate the zest of any fruit. I’m always mesmerised. But my treasured item would have to be my oven without it I’m quite literally half a person. Recently moving house I hadn’t used an oven for 9 days, it’s the longest I have been without baking and it was pretty tough.
What are you most looking forward to about the BBC Good Food Shows?
I have attended the BBC Good Food Show but this year it will be interesting to come back since so much has changed. Very excited to be a part of it all.
What new ingredient or ingredients are you inspired by right now? I am loving yellow ras -el- hanout. It works so well as a coating on fish but even better with slow cooked lamb.
Nadiya Hussain will be cooking live at the BBC Good Food Show Winter, Birmingham – NEC, 24-27 November. Visit bbcgoodfoodshowwinter.com for tickets and further information.

Those with buttermilk and without vegetable oils may not be a bad option. However, spreads that do contain a higher content of vegetable oils may not be a good choice.

“Consistently delicious” Review of The Case Restaurant and Champagne Bar
This was the first restaurant I visited when I met my now husband, 13 years ago. I still remember the rosemary and garlic roast new potatoes from back then. Anyway… since then we’ve enjoyed many special occasions at The Case. Last week was our 9th anniversary so spontaneously we dropped in for dinner. It has finally dawned on me that we’ve always reserved The Case for a special occasion yet it’s so reasonably priced we should be visiting more often. A delicious, freshly cooked 2 course dinner only costs £16. You’d pay that at Pizza Express! The restaurant is laid with crisp white linen and silver table ware and while you might think it’s only for those special days, it’s so relaxed we’re going to make it a regular. The whole area around The Case is fantastic, have a cocktail at 33 Cank Street, dinner at The Case, ice cream at Gelato Village and wrap up with champagne back at The Case champagne bar. A perfect night out and it could cost no more than £75. Review date: August/September | www.tripadvisor.co.uk

dluxe ork w r e p pa Sometimes I feel I’ve got to run away... Dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland’s Business Editor Bart Dalton on Marc Almond and your Tainted Diary…
Who are the types of clients you are looking for? What would be an ideal outcome of our meeting?
Have you ever been invited to a coffee that you knew was going to end up with you buying something, volunteering for a committee, joining a cult or even worse loaning someone money that you know you’ll never get back?
Is there anything you need to know about me or my service before we meet?
Our lives are all built around the relationships that gestate slowly over time. There are very few that become love at first site or BFFs at first text. I know many of us claim to be workaholics, but at the end of the day we are working so that we can have experiences. That means that all of the time we spend working is taking time away from the things we really want to be doing. If you are building a people business selling, providing a service or working on big contracts you probably have attended more coffee meetings than Hadrian had bricks for building walls. How many of those were fruitful? How many were a dreadful bore? They are a necessary evil, just like first dates. So why don’t we apply the same filters that dating sites do to our business dates?
How would working with Taurus Wealth or in conjunction with us add benefit to your or our clients?
The love we share seems to go no where... In the New English dictionary according to Microsoft, Meetnapping is a word that is defined loosely as, the tendency to kidnap a colleague by inviting them to a useless meeting. It is time for you to take back control of your diary and spend time with people you know want to make things happen for you. Here are four tools that can make it so that you can buy back two weeks of your year if you use them regularly. Create a nice standardised email that asks a few simple questions to make sure you are prepared for the meeting. Your questions will vary but here are a couple of ones that I use: 60 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Are there any people in my linked in contacts you would like to know more about and why?
Bring an agenda that you send through ahead of time. Keep it simple and focused and start the meeting at an odd time like 10:20 or 9:50. Keep the meeting scheduled for 45 minutes or less. You can always extend but you cannot cut it short without seeming rude. You will know if you feel the meeting has been successful. If it has been, set your next meeting. At that meeting you will be setting plans in place to work together. There are too many times that we leave things too obtuse. Set specific and measurable goals in your world. Using these tactics will save you at least two hours a week if you have 8 meetings which works out to be two weeks of time saved over the year and your meetings will be more successful. Now I have given you all a boy could give you. If you were a kid of the 80’s you should have just heard a clap clap in your head. No? Oh well…

Post Brexit PENSIONS Two months on from Britain’s shock vote to leave the European Union and for most it’s business as usual. However, there are still a lot of uncertainties on what is to follow and how the world of pensions could suffer the consequences following over thirty three million people having spoken and 52% defying polls and bookmakers odds and voting Out. Despite warnings of the impact of Brexit at an economic level, markets have defied experts so far. However, a UK recession is still predicted which could mean that we will see a consequential effect on pensions. Following the vote, the general consensus is that it is very unlikely that both The Pensions Regulator and Pension Protection Fund will back track on measures that have previously been put in place as a result of EU law. They will continue to review and improve standards for both personal and workplace pension schemes meaning we should see very little changes to legislation, for the shorter term at least, whilst the terms of our future relationship with the EU are to be agreed upon. The Bank of England finally announced a monetary stimulus that sees
The primary factors that could see a lot of pensions fall in value are highly dependent on where people are invested and their continued affordability to contribute into their pensions. Research has suggested that savers will need to put aside 22% of their income in order for them to achieve sufficient sustainable income to provide comfort at retirement (FTAdviser, 2016). With there already being concern surrounding the matter of people not saving enough for their retirement, and hence the introduction of Auto Enrolment, this is a worrying read to those who are working towards retirement as it will consequently mean either saving more or retiring later than planned. Most also foresee that the Brexit result will increase the chances of the state pension age rising beyond the age of 70. With regards to pension pots and investment, to date and after an initial sharp fall, the stock market has persisted to fight back to levels now higher than what it was pre vote. Although a big fall is still predicted over the coming months, the fall in the pound could be seen as advantageous to some investors as it is likely that overseas markets could appreciate in sterling terms as a result. The Remain camp originally predicted that the ‘triple lock’ will come under pressure, which currently increases the state pension by the higher of wage or price inflation, subject to a 2.5% minimum. However, this has now been quickly controverted with Theresa May committing to keeping it.

Can I just demand to see my children? If both parents have parental responsibility and there are no Court orders, then neither has greater rights than the other. Therefore the arrangements for the children should be made and agreed between the parents. However, if an agreement cannot be reached you can try to reach an agreement through mediation. If this does not work an application can be made to the court for a Child Arrangements Order to set out the arrangements for when each parent spends time with the children.
I want to take my children on holiday with me – do I need to get permission if it has already been agreed that they spend the time with me? Generally when the children are with you, you can use your parental responsibility to make whatever arrangements you feel is appropriate. However if you are taking the children out of England and Wales and you do not have an order that the children live with you then you would need the other parent’s permission to do so.

If she is visiting relatives in England and Wales then generally that would be acceptable but it would be good practice though to let you know where she and the children would be in case of emergencies. If there is a reason why you object to where the children are going you could apply for a Prohibited Steps Order to prohibit that but there would have to be a good reason to show that it was not in the children’s best interest to go to wherever your ex is taking them.
My ex said I could see my children at Christmas and now has changed their mind; can I do anything about this? If the contact at Christmas is not agreed then an application will have to be made to the court for a Child Arrangements Order to decide the arrangements over Christmas. It may be that a solicitor’s letter to try and agree the arrangements beforehand can enable an agreement to be reached or mediation may be successful in trying to reach an agreement.

THINK FLEXIBLE IN BUSINESS Cherie Concannon is a High Performance Leadership Coach with a reputation as a leading expert in corporate progression for top level executives. Working with a range of skills and techniques, I help my clients to achieve their corporate objectives. My coaching responds to the needs of business leaders, typically directors and senior managers of private and public sector organisations, company owners and senior officials in public bodies and government. “No species can excel without drawing on the collective talents of its entire gene pool, and this is something that the human race now needs to realise and fast.” These were the words of a fascinating futurist, Christopher Barnatt, during a presentation to an audience including myself and a group of primarily male accountants. Essentially Mr Barnatt was indicating that it would be vital for the future success of humanity to have more women in positions of power, including in the boardroom. Many in the audience were uncomfortable with Barnatt’s vision of the future but when he came out with this statement it was all too much for one poor fellow who was seated immediately in front of me. He rose to his feet and with a raised voice said, “So you’re telling me we have to put bloody women in charge?” As Barnatt was swiftly ushered away, I thought about this statement. It resonated with me, as it encapsulated what I have always thought – everyone has a talent – and my speciality is finding that talent and making it work for the individual. We need the collective talents of everyone to make the world go round. Whilst this individual was clearly horrified at the prospect at putting more women in charge, we’ve seen a number of successful women in recent years rise to prominence, not least in politics, only last month we had our second female Prime Minister appointed in Britain. Our second out of a total of 76, but still – she’s female and she’s leading the country! Across the pond we have Hillary Clinton running for presidency. You may not agree with these women’s politics, but the message is clear - things are changing. The so – called glass ceiling is beginning to send its shards down at a faster pace than ever before. So why would it be any different when you want to build a successful business? No business can excel without drawing on the collective talents of its people and no business can thrive without welcoming change. We are moving into a new age of careerism, driven, security led post-war Baby Boomer’s are now working with both Generation X – who started their careers in the power-suited, recession heavy 80’s and the tech- savvy, Millenial generation, who are expected to have several different careers in their lifetime. The most successful businesses I have come across have three things, a willingness to change and adapt, employees who are willing to change and adapt and an ability to spot the talent within their workforce and harness that talent. As Darwin said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” Globalisation and the expansion of technology means that the traditional 5:00 – 9:00 is no longer considered a normal working day. Flexibility and fluidity is King to both employers and employees alike. Adapting to survive in the mercurial, modern working world requires mental agility and the ability to say, “yes, I am open to looking at a different way of doing things.” Change is good and change is inevitable, yet it can often be a daunting prospect to people. We are creatures of habit and making big changes can be an emotional mind-field if you are not ready to embrace them. However, by resisting changes to our working environments we do both ourselves and others a huge disservice. Inability to deviate from our original working blueprint causes us to miss out on a wealth of conscious and subconscious information that could be crucial for continued success. The need to focus on the benefits that change brings to the working environment is key to understanding the importance it can have on you and your company. Making room for discussions that lead to change mean we do not miss out on ideas because of a “this is the way we’ve always done things” mentality. To prosper we must have the flexibility of thought to embrace and be open to change and to be successful it must start with the individual. Changes are coming. Make sure you and your business are ready for them.

Landlords tax rule changes The additional 3% stamp duty land tax (‘SDLT’) applying to second properties has dominated discussion amongst residential buy-to-let landlords, but from April next year restrictions to tax relief for residential landlords will restrict the amount of interest a buyto-let residential landlord can deduct to calculate their income tax liability. The restriction comes into effect from April 2017, and is being phased in over 4 years (interest is restricted by 25% in each year) until it takes full effect in April 2020. When the announcement was made at the Summer Budget, the measure was described as restricting interest relief at the 20% basic rate. However, the actual mechanism of how the restriction works has wider impact as, at present, buy-to-let landlords can deduct all their interest cost to calculate rental profits. When the new measure takes full effect, the interest cost will be completely disallowed in computing rental profits and instead a tax credit equal to 20% of the interest will be given against the person’s income tax liability. Whilst this may sound like what the Government intended the measure to achieve, the fact the interest is completely disallowed means the individual will have higher overall taxable income. This could push an individual into a higher rate of income tax (40%/45%), start to reduce their personal allowance (if their income now starts to exceed £100,000), affect their entitlement to child benefit and restrict the amount on which they can claim tax relief for pensions.
Like the existing basic nil-rate band, any unused allowance will be transferrable to a surviving spouse or civil partner. The theory is that a widow or widower can potentially have a £650,000 basic nil-rate band and, from 2020, an additional £350,000 nil-rate band for their main residence if it forms part of their estate. This is how the chancellor gets to his £1 million figure.
LEAVING HOME
Those who have never married will only have a main residence nil-rate band of up to £175,000, as they have no allowance from a deceased wife or husband to transfer across to their own.
Where the main residence has been sold after 8 July 2015 because the deceased had downsized or had ceased to own a residence, any assets representing the proceeds of sale will still attract the main residence nil-rate band, provided they in turn are left to a direct descendant.
ARE NEW RULES FOR INHERITANCE TAX A GAME-CHANGER FOR ESTATE PLANNING? Inheritance Tax (IHT) was once associated with the estates of the aristocracy, but today it’s a part of mainstream financial planning. The IHT nil-rate band for individuals has been frozen at £325,000 since 2009 (£650,000 for couples) and, consequently, those liable to pay 40% on amounts above the threshold are not just the estates of the rich writes Janine Edwards. While IHT is not the biggest revenue-raiser for the government, it is arguably the most emotive. The main objection is that it is tax on wealth that has already been taxed. Some critics say it is a penalty for hard work and enterprise. Nevertheless, there is no plan to abolish it. The value of a property can itself often be enough to exceed the nilrate band. If appropriate measures are not in place to mitigate the resulting tax bill, it can force the sale of a much-loved family home, which can be heart-breaking for surviving children.
PROMISING DELIVERY
Some years ago, the government indicated it would look at raising the IHT nil-rate band; and the political pressure prior to the recent Summer Budget was sufficient for George Osborne to finally draw up plans. He announced that he would fulfil a long-standing commitment by lifting the family home out of IHT for all but the wealthiest individuals. He said: “You can pass up to £1 million on to your children free of IHT. No more IHT on family homes.” If you didn’t look beyond the headlines you could be forgiven for thinking that you now have a £1 million nil-rate band, or that your home is exempt from IHT. Sadly, it’s not quite as straightforward as that. The proposal isn’t to increase the current ‘basic’ nil-rate band. It is a new measure targeted at relieving those with wealth tied up in their home.
HOUSE RULES
The new ‘main residence nil-rate band’ will only apply to individuals who pass their residential property to direct descendants (a child, grandchild, step-child, adopted child or foster child) under the terms of their Will. If inheritors are not direct descendants, they cannot benefit from the main residence nil-rate band, with one notable exception: the spouse or civil partner of the direct descendant can benefit if the direct descendant has died. Furthermore, it is being phased in over four years, starting from 6 April 2017. It’s not yet in force – it won’t be fully implemented for another five years.
This underlines the importance of keeping adequate records so that executors have evidence that the property was owned before 8 July 2015. However, if the net value of the estate – not just the residential property value – is above £2 million after deducting any liabilities, the main residence nil-rate band will be tapered away by £1 for every £2 above this threshold.
HOME TRUTHS
]The main thing to remember is that the main residence nil-rate band does not fully come into effect until 2020/21. A lot can happen between now and then. In the meantime, if you’re a married couple and your total assets including your home are worth more than £650,000, or you are a single person with more than £325,000, you probably have an IHT liability. There are ways to cover your IHT liability, including various forms of life assurance which, when placed in trust, can pay out an agreed sum to descendants on death. The right policy could cover the cost of any IHT bill and make it easier for the people you leave behind. Alternatively, there are various ways to reduce the value of your estate.
A TRUST ISSUE
As a word of caution to those who have placed their home in trust, perhaps for long-term care asset preservation or other IHT purposes, the new nil-rate band will only apply to those who leave their main residence as part of their estate. Individuals occupying a main residence under the terms of a ‘life interest trust’, or ‘immediate postdeath interest trust’, may have to take appropriate action sometime in the future as their home would pass under the terms of the trust, not under the conditions of the Will. It’s certainly not a simple area of financial planning, but your financial adviser will be best placed to give you the right advice. Details of the main residence nil- rate band are still being finalised and draft legislation is expected to be included in the Finance Bill 2016. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances.

Under the existing rules, the value of an individual’s assets and investments are added up in order to calculate IHT. That broader approach will continue, with the exception of the chancellor’s new tax-break extension, which will apply only to property left to a direct descendent.
dluxe e peopl Lukwesa Burak Is the new face of BBC’s succesful regional news programme Inside Out. Having lived all over the world, including the MiddleEast and South Africa, and working on some of the biggest TV and news stations, including Sky News, Lukwesa Burak is back in Leicester presenting daily on BBC Radio Leicester as well as presenting the new series of Inside Out. Dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland’s Jon Fraser grabbed a coffee with Lukwesa to talk about how she made it into the world of journalism and what brought her back to her home in the East Midlands. So how did you get in to Journalism ? I started off at the weather centre as a Broadcaster Assistant and then covered Nottingham for East Midlands Today for around five years. I then went down to work for Sky News and was there for around 10/11 years… now that was a training ground! I look at it now and realise that I could never do what I’m doing now without that training- every step adds something to your repertoire.
What was challenging about your training at Sky News? It’s international news, it’s fast moving and there’s no such thing as a rehearsal and no such thing as getting it wrong! You’re constantly watching the news wire for breaking news and when it came in you had to react… but react and not get it wrong! The auto queue is blank; the running order is blank because your news story is developing whilst you’re on air.
You must have got such an adrenaline rush when you worked at Sky, does working in television and news still give you that buzz?
With Inside Out, how do you strike a balance between the hard hitting problems within the region and also celebrating what is happening? There is a great team of people in the office with a couple of white boards. Some of the stories tend to be follow ups which is something that news and TV don’t often do and often that can be the hard hitting story. But there is a lot of planning, there is an entire team dedicated to researching stories and finding stories on merit which is the best way.
It’s international news, it’s fast moving and there’s no such thing as a rehearsal and no such thing as getting it wrong! You’re constantly watching the news wire for breaking news and when it came in you had to react… but react and not get it wrong!
Since Inside Out first started, it’s always been a programme that I have thought I would love to work for. It covers what interests me. I love documentaries and I love looking deeper. With Inside Out you have more time with a story to give it the proper treatment it deserves. It’s the educating and the learning side which I’m very passionate about. I’ve seen a lot of people that haven’t been lucky enough to have that in their lives so I always love championing issues that people are enthusiastic about and can learn from.
Is it difficult to cover all of the different regions within the East Midlands? I think they look at the whole region rather than focusing on specific cities. So, we’ve done Leicestershire, I’m filming in Nottingham next week and there’s some stuff in Loughborough so there’s a good spread that covers a wide area of the East Midlands.
How are you finding it working on the show compared to previous jobs you’ve had? ‘When Inside Out first started, I think I was still involved in weather, and it was one of those programmes where you think I’d love to work on that. So, for me, it’s almost like a dream coming true. I looked up to the show and it covered what interested me. I love documentaries and I love looking deeper. Because often we don’t have time to look deeper into a story and, doing Inside Out, you learn so much more and I just love that element of broadcasting.
Have you recorded most of the latest series of Inside out? How does it work?
We’re in the midst of all that at the moment. We spent a day in the life of Narborough Road, the most cosmopolitan street in the UK, and filmed some of the shopkeepers and characters on the street which was interesting. And there are loads more fantastic pieces coming up- some light hearted, some serious.
The new season of Inside Out East Midlands runs every Monday night at 7.30pm and can be caught on BBC iPlayer. You can hear Lukwesa presenting weekdays on BBC Radio Leicester between 13.00 and 15.00.
