EDITOR’S LETTER. How quick did the summer go? I mean seriously – I lit the log burner last night! Oh well, all good things come to an end so as you put the unused garden furniture back into the shed for another eight months try and think about all of the amazing things that autumn brings with it – especially in the wonderful part of the world that is Leicestershire and Rutland. Aside from looking forward to some outstanding Autumn walks in our pretty country parks and riversides, Autumn brings with it some exceptional entertainment. By the time you read this issue many of you will have seen the outstanding Ria Jones perform as Norma Desmond in Curve’s spectacular Sunset Boulevard and that’s just the start of the theatre’s Autumn season. The return of Hairspray, the upcoming Christmas production of Scrooge and new play Pink Sari Revolution are all very good reasons to venture out during the darker nights. De Montfort Hall is bringing the epic Blood Brothers to the stage (unmissable theatre) and comedy fans can look forward to the return of Jimmy Carr and Rob Brydon arriving on stage before Leicester Comedy Festival announce their line-up for 2018’s extravaganza of fun.

LET THERE BE LIGHT
Well known for their range of design led furniture, Bluesuntree’s enthusiasm for affordable design is evident in the all the products they showcase both in their extensive Birstall showroom and on their website. If you are searching for something different that you won’t find in every large store or furniture chain, then you’ve found the right place. Choosing a ceiling fitting? Firstly let’s think about the space. Do you have high ceilings? Then be bold and go for a big statement piece. For a dining area why not go for a group of lights. They can be set at different heights to add interest or be grouped by colour; either can be extremely effective and will add that extra design edge to your room. Table and floor lights are a great way of adding subtle light to a room and are so easy to incorporate into your existing interior furnishings, without going to the expense and time of re-decorating. Long-considered as one of the most turbulent and complex times in British history, the Wars of the Roses were a tangled web of monarchy merry-go-rounds, land grabbing nobles, and some of the bloodiest battles fought on English soil.
With the dark nights drawing in our focus is firmly on how to effectively illuminate our interiors. Often an afterthought, the way we use light within a room takes a lot of consideration and has implications in terms of practicality, style and comfort. First of all what is the rooms to be used for? Do you need specific task lighting? And then what about style? You may crave a pure, minimalist or contemporary space, or perhaps you’re a slave to retro design or love a bit of eclectic elegance? Whatever your preferences, interior specialist Bluesuntree’s latest collection of lighting showcases their firm belief that good design should be at the heart of every home.

GO HARD OR GO HOM Go to men’s underwear label Hom have released an Autumn / Winter 2017 collection that takes classic prints to a whole new level across three principle themes. First off, an ‘organic’ trend, inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, features jungle and floral prints. Graphic design, architecture and geometric repeats make up the second key trend line and lastly, in tribute to the brand’s founder Charles Belpaume’s words from 1968, “There’s no reason why men can’t wear elegant underwear”, the third theme follows an elegant take on the theme of Marseille, where the brand was born. The Temptation line, pictured above, sits beneath the mantle of art deco and employs flattering cuts for a sculpted silhouette and is, unusually for a men’s line, beautifully-finished with lace and transparent detailing. Despite its delicacy it’s a look that avoids being feminine employing a more constructed couture feel. Trunks are priced at £30 and available at uk.hom.com or in store at Selfridges and House of Fraser.

PUTTING THE SOCIAL BACK INTO SOCIAL CARE IN LEICESTERSHIRE “Crisis”, “cuts”, “cash-strapped”; just a few of the words usually associated with the Social Care Sector. It’s easy to worry about the fate of vulnerable people in our community, but underneath the cloud of austerity there are organisations working hard to enable people with support needs to achieve comfortable, independent, fulfilling lives. Creative Support is a not-for-profit provider of social care services supporting around 7500 adults across England with mental health needs, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and other needs. Founded over 25 years ago, Creative Support have been supporting vulnerable people in Leicestershire since 2010. This ranges from 24hr 1:1 support for service users with high needs, to short term preventative support. Their key aims are to ensure that the people they support remain safe and well, have access to activities, maintain their tenancies, reduce their debts, and find employment. This year, Creative Support have been awarded council contracts to expand in Leicestershire, providing support for more of the area’s vulnerable people, and providing interesting and rewarding support worker jobs and senior positons for local people. Look out for the recruitment advert in this edition of DLUXE magazine to find a rewarding way to spend your day! www.creativesupport.co.uk

P e r f e c t ly Precious Proposals The winter months are not only a time for wrapping up warm and planning for Santa, they’re also the most popular months for wedding proposals, with nearly half of all proposals taking place between November and February, according to a recent study. Planning for your big ‘Will You Marry Me?’ moment takes time, thought and some forward planning. With the next Leap Year not until 2020, that puts the pressure on the fellas to get it right. A terrifying thought. Not so, says the experts at Lanes Fine Jewellery of Leicester who are on hand to take the panic out of proposing…
“Knowledge is power, so do your homework”, says Ercan Onguc of Lanes Fine Jewellery. “In an era of ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’ and reality TV, we could be forgiven for thinking that you have to be weird and wonderful to make a valid and memorable proposal. Whilst creativity is to be applauded, the one thing that every bride-to-be wants you to get right is the ring”, warns Ercan. And this is where Lanes Fine Jewellery can offer some sparkling advice: 1. Style is Eternal. Fashions fade, but style is eternal. Thankfully, there aren’t any major trends in engagement rings, so go for something that shows you’ve thought this through. Mirror her personality – and no, we don’t mean get her a mood ring. 2. Buy The Best. There was always the old rule of thumb that your wedding ring should equal (or exceed) your monthly salary. Happy wife, happy life and all that.

SuperPath® Hip Replacement. It’s possible to walk within hours of surgery. Mr Ashwin Kulkarni FRCS, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon explains, “This new, minimally invasive technique is performed through a smaller incision and because we separate the muscles and tendons apart rather than cutting them and do not dislocate the hip, this means you’ll recover a lot faster. So much so, you should be back on your feet within a few days following your surgery.”
Do I need a hip replacement? Most people with hip pain will often have groin pain which radiates to the knee. Some may also have pain outside the hip and others may experience pain in their buttock region. This pain is often brought on by activity. However, in advanced stages of arthritis, the pain will be continuous and will get worse with activity
What happens when you see me in clinic? If you or your doctor suspects you may have arthritis or may need a hip replacement, I will talk with you to gain further information and undertake an examination. It may be necessary to send you for further diagnostic such as an X-ray, MRI scan or injection which will help me specify where the problem is and enable me to make a diagnosis.
If I have arthritis are there any alternative treatments available? Yes, there are a number of alternative non-operative options for treatment, however, in most cases, these options will be already have been discussed by your GP. I would need to assess your requirements and discuss the correct procedure for you.
What happens during surgery? After you receive the anaesthetic, a small incision will be made and the muscles will then be separated allowing access to the hip. A surgical dislocation is not required with SuperPath®, the socket and stem can then be replaced and fixed into place. This usually would take between 60 and 90 minutes.

SPOTLIGHT.
SPARKS DESCRIBED AS “THE SMARTEST, MOST CONSISTENTLY EVOLVING BAND IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK”, INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED POP PIONEERS, SPARKS’ MUSIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN INNOVATIVE AND INSTANTLY IDENTIFIABLE.
24 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
F
ormed in 1972 in Los Angeles by Californian brothers Ron and Russell Mael, known for their quirky approach to songwriting, Sparks’ music is renowned for its intelligent, sophisticated, and acerbic lyrics, and for the brothers idiosyncratic, theatrical stage presence which is typified in the contrast between Russell’s animated, hyperactive, falsetto frontman antics and Ron’s deadpan scowling. With the rare ability to blend worldwide chart success with a cult following, the band’s frequently changing styles- from rock gods to synth pop legends alongside a starkly individual and visual aesthetic have kept the band at the forefront of modern, artful pop music. Best known for the songs “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us”, which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1974; the disco hit “The Number One Song in Heaven” in 1979; Sparks are back with their twenty third studio album ‘Hippopotamus’. Recorded in Los Angeles and released ahead of a European tour which sees Sparks play Rock City, Nottingham on the 23 September and Birmingham’s O2 Institute 1 on the 24 September ‘Hippopotamus’ sees the brothers take the pop form, shake it up, and create an album that is adventurous, fresh and idiosyncratically ‘Sparks’ – how many band lyrics reference Hieronymus Bosch, Titus Andronicus wearing a snorkel and a Germanic van – and that’s just the title track! It could only be Sparks! dluxe Magazine caught up with the brothers as they released second single Edith Piaf to find out where they draw their inspiration from, what audiences can expect from the tour and to find out which brother tells the best jokes… Where did the inspiration for the title track of your new album, ‘Hippopotamus’ come from?
Russell: They should start with our compilation box set call ‘New Music For Amnesiacs – The Essential Collection.’ This package is a perfect introduction to our career. It has songs from every album as well as a beautiful book documenting our career. And a bunch of assorted goodies thrown in as well. Highly recommended. How does making a Sparks album differ from scoring a film, or a musical? Ron: In an album, it is a collection of 3 or 4-minute complete ideas, whereas in a film, an idea is developed over an hour and a half or two hours. We tend, though, to use cinematic themes and sounds in our songs and a Sparks sensibility in our film and musical work, so there is quite a bit of crossover.
“I’m not sure that there’s someone out there risking it all on their latest work.”
Ron: We had written the instrumental music for the song first and it needed a subject matter as idiosyncratic as the music. The word ‘Hippopotamus’ sounds cool and fit, and then it was working backwards and figuring out what happens in a song called ‘Hippopotamus’. Voila!
With a vast catalogue of material to draw from, what can fans expect to hear on ‘The Hippopotamus Tour’? Russell: We will be doing an assortment of songs from out past albums as well as heavy emphasis on Hippopotamus. We are very proud of the new album and feel it’s a vital part of our catalogue and would love to share it with our fans. But yes, old songs as well! You have been creating art, music and film for a few decades now – how has your process changed over the years? Ron: Ideas are always the key and that never changes, but technology has allowed us new ways to make these ideas concrete. Musically we’re able to experiment more since we can record on our own, without worrying about time or budgetary constraints. Which Sparks record would you suggest a newcomer listens to first?
this time?
You’ve said that you find it frustrating that artists often play it safe and aren’t very adventurous. Which contemporary bands / musicians do you think are being bold with their music? Russell: I’m not sure that there’s someone out there risking it all on their latest work. At the start of your career you were drawn to the UK and it is where you had your first hit. What is it about the UK that appeals to you, and why do you think British music lovers are so drawn to you and your music? Ron: We can’t completely explain it. All we know is that we had 2 albums out in the states that had very limited following and after moving to London in late ’73, we had tremendous success with Kimono My House. We had always thought of ourselves as more of a British band than an American band stylistically, so I suppose that has something to do with it. However there does seem to be an openness to eccentricity in Britain. We’ve seen you perform with various set ups, from the stripped back ‘Two Hands One Mouth’ tour to performing at the Barbican with a 35-piece orchestra – what will you have in your musical bag of tricks
Ron: Just you Wait! In the meantime, we very much look forward to touring with a fantastic band on the Hippopotamus tour! If you could travel back in time to when you formed the band, and give yourselves one piece of advice, what would you say? Russell: Make sure you book aisle seats. Who tells the better jokes - Ron or Russell? Russell: See previous answer. Obviously, Russell tells better jokes. Hippopotamus by Sparks is available to buy, stream or download now. Catch them live at Rock City, Nottingham on the 23rd September and Birmingham’s O2 Institute 1 on the 24th September. For tour tickets visit www.allsparks.com

MAKE A SPECTACLE of yourself Glasses have been at the forefront of fashion this summer and it seems as if nothing will change this winter either, with transparent and retro spectacles being among the most popular. Often worn out of necessity, this year’s number one accessory has seen a surge in popularity with many people now wearing them out of choice, whether they need them or not.
8
6
The sheer number of styles and colours now available can make the prospect of choosing a new pair a little daunting, but here we have rounded up the styles and trends you can’t afford to miss out on…
7
Dare to update your glasses this winter for a whole new image. Opt for clear or opaque frames- our favourite is this round Lindberg pair- and experiment with the shape too; oversized and circular are particularly popular right now.
11
Alternatively, take a step back in time with a cat eye frame in a vibrant colourthink purple or red- to achieve a modern take on the 50s. However if you prefer to stick to a more neutral colour, Tom Ford also has some great options oozing with sophistication.

There’s always the chance you’ll be faced with the winter sun and what better way to be prepared than with a fabulous pair of sunglasses? This season our favourites include retro cat eye shades, which are renowned for creating the illusion of a facelift and highlighting cheekbones, as well as a classic pair of aviators, which are becoming increasingly popular in glasses form too. Invest in a pair of Maui Jim’s for the ultimate style statement; the polarisation gives you the best protection from the sun and helps you achieve that mysterious movie star look. For both glasses and sunglasses it’s all about the tortoise shell colours at the moment, which, being so varied, are sure to flatter any complexion so that you can find the right tone for you. These look great in both rounded and square frames and Etnia Barcelona combines them with a pop of colour for the extra wow factor.

DESIGN CLASSICS
TO INVEST IN With the growth of fast fashion, many of us have found it difficult to justify paying out thousands on designer items however there are certain items that make sense to save up for and keep in your wardrobe forever writes stylist Cleo Lacey.
Here’s her five picks of designer pieces that will never go out of style. Best get spending… 1. The Burberry Trench Coat will last for years. Go for camel as it goes with everything and will never go out of style. The amount I find in clients closets that they’ve literally had for years, and I mean years! Try discount outlets such as Bicester Village to try and get a saving. 2. Louis Vuitton Classic Monogram. Go for an iconic style such as the Speedy or Neverfull as they are the perfect tote for work, travel or daily use. Louis Vuitton luggage is also a fail safe investment and an incredibly chic and stylish way to travel with vintage pieces selling for more than brand new ones. 3. A Hermes Scarf, Birkin Bag or Belt. Three fail safe classical investments that every dream wardrobe should have. Go for the silk Hermes scarf in their signature orange colour to add a little pop of luxury to any outfit. With regards to the Birkin bag, yes they are a fortune but luxury online retail platform Baghunter claims that they make a better investment than gold! Unlike stocks and sharesthe value of the Birkin handbags has never decreased, even during times of recession and economic difficulty. The Birkin bag is the safest and least volatile investment market. Show that to your husband! If the bag is still way out of your reach then opt for the Hermes classic “H” buckle belt. I have had my black and tan reversible one for over 8 years, I wear it so much and could sell it now for pretty much what I paid for it even in a used condition. 4. A Quilted Chanel Bag, lke the Birkin, will only ever increase in value and if you take good care of them you’ll be able to resell them for a good price. I would personally go for the classic quilted 2.55 with a gold chain in black or cream. Breakfast at Tiffany’s eat your heart out! 5. Cartier Love Bangle is definitely on my wish list. You can’t get much better than a red and gold box! A timeless tribute to a passionate romance (it is fastened only by your love using a special screwdriver) designed to be worn for the rest of your life. It will age gracefully with you and become an heirloom for future generations. If you so happen to part with the man with the screwdriver, then you can still sell them at extremely good prices.! White T-shirt
The white t-shirt is the most versatile piece you should own. You can wear it with anything, having it act as a blank canvas to do what you want with. It’s a super-chic and simple option and will not date like graphic t-shirts. Try to mix in V-necks as well as crew necks for variety sake.

The solid blue shirt is a menswear staple. Like the white t-shirt, you can wear it with anything as well as creating new looks by playing around with the buttons and sleeves, making it ideal for classical smart and casual looks.

According to the fashion industry, every man buys 46 new pieces of clothing every year. We’ve become obsessed with fast fashion; trendy disposable clothes at cheap prices but are we looking any better for it? Dluxe Magazines men’s style correspondent Pablo Collelo thinks that less is more… The idea of a capsule wardrobe has been around since the 1970’s, when a London boutique owner coined the phrase. This small collection of clothing is put together with the main purpose of reducing choice overload of owning too many clothing items by building an intentional, versatile clothing collection of a specific size. When we talk about a capsule wardrobe we are talking about a minimalist, streamlined approach to personal style where, ideally, every item contained within can work together, and looks for different occasions can be built within minutes. Most men, wanting to dressing better, think they need all their clothes to stand out but generally I like to keep the colour palette fairly neutral – blacks, blues, greys and whites. This is not only because neutrals tend to pair easily with one another, allowing you to maximise every item, but also because matching pieces is easier when there aren’t too many competing colours in it. While each man’s capsule wardrobe will differ, this list is a good starting point to give you an idea of what yours should look like. Although not included below in detail, also consider grey wool trousers, preferably in dark grey, polo shirts in white or grey and white trainers – to go from office to bar. Leather Loafers Harvey Nichols £345
Indigo jeans Harvey Nichols £120
If there’s one pair of jeans every man should have in his wardrobe, it’s the dark blue kind. They’re timeless, versatile and the longer you wear them the better they look. For a smart-casual affair, strike the balance between dressed up and dressed down, opting for a slim or skinny fit with a plain white or black t-shirt layered with a shirt if you want to keep things casual.

Leather loafers are a great choice for footwear. They are more stylish and dressier than their trainer counterparts, but informal enough to wear casually. Try playing around with the different design styles.
Many of us feel less satisfied when we have too many choices, but this minimalist approach to dressing is the perfect way to refocus on quality over quantity. After having adjusted to a capsule wardrobe you’ll never look back.

Aim to get 6-8 hours quality sleep 6 days a week. Go to bed before 10pm.
Step 3
Up training to 3 times per week, after your weights program add in 15 mins interval training on the rower. 1 min fast 1 min rest, you should sweat lots.
Aim to hit a protein goal per day, weight in KG X 2 in lbs. of protein e.g. 60kg women eats 120 grams. Men should eat slightly more.
More training means more Recovery! Add in epsom salt baths, foam rolling and maybe a sports massage once a week.
Step 4

Start to really up your work rate in training! You could take your rest in-between sets to 30 seconds. Superset your exercises, e.g. do squats straight into Lunges. Add drop sets e.g. start on heavy weight to failure then go straight onto lighter weight.

LIVING. the sun to flood into the room, open the windows if it is a hot day to prevent the room from becoming stuffy. In contrast to this, during the cooler, darker months burn fragrant candles and use lamps rather than bright, imposing lighting to create a cosy atmosphere. If you have a feature fireplace then make sure it's lit. It’s always a good idea to declutter a living room- walk round and look at what you can take away without leaving the room feeling empty.
A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER We’ve all seen the television makeover programmes that have homeowners jumping through interior designers hoops before daring to put their home on the market but how much time should you invest in getting your home ready to market? Dluxe Magazine caught up with estate agent and interiors expert Oliver Rayns to find out, room by room, what’s needed to clinch that sale. OUTSIDE THE PROPERTY First impressions are lasting impressions. Whilst it is the agent's photographs that will have enticed the prospective purchaser to your door, it is the outside of the property that they will engage with initially. Lowcost improvements such as repainting the front door will positively enhance the first impression, tidying the front garden and parking clean cars formally on the driveway can make all the difference. Tuck away that wheelie bin too.
When it comes to the garden it’s important to keep things tidy. Make sure to remove the weeds and have the leaves swept up and cleared away. This will give any prospective purchaser the impression that your entire home has been well cared for- an unloved garden can make a whole house seem unhomely. 40 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
ENTRANCE
You’ve already made sure that the front door is painted and looking smart so now focus on what a buyer feels as they enter your home. It may seem obvious but brushing past coats and tripping over discarded shoes will make a buyer think you have no storage so keep things clear. Hallways can take a lot of wear so we’d recommend this as one place to repaint. Keep your colour scheme light and bright to portray a positive atmosphere to any prospective purchaser. Paintwork should be as neutral as possible as some people may not be able to see past vast amounts of bold colours, so we recommend creams or greys as they are a lot more tranquil. KITCHEN The kitchen is often the focal point of any property, so it’s important this is well presented. Low-cost ways of improving your kitchen include; ensuring all cupboard handles are well fixed and straight, that work surfaces are cleared and tidy, sinks are clear from dirty dishes and glassware/ tableware is put away in its appropriate place. Inviting ways of displaying your kitchen can include lighting a fragrant candle, a vase of fresh flowers and fresh fruit and vegetables displayed ready to be prepared. LIVING ROOM Prospective purchasers want to imagine themselves spending relaxing evenings in this space. Depending on the time of year you are selling your property, natural light will enhance this room, so ensure that all curtains/blinds are fully open to allow
BATHROOMS Bathrooms can often be put to the bottom of the pile, but this room is used every day and is just as important as a kitchen or living room. Simple improvements such as repairing damaged/discoloured sealants around the bath/shower, using a specialised grout cleaner if those white grouts have become discoloured and using a limescale cleaner on brassware can make all the difference. Visual improvements include fresh towels on the towel rail and try to tidy up the toiletries to keep things clutter free. BEDROOMS The bedroom is a retreat from the rest of the world, so try and display it in a fashion that presents that. Always present a well-made bed and add a couple of cushions for comfort. Switch on bedside lamps, tidy away clothes, and clear the tops of drawers and dressing tables. Make the bedroom as inviting as possible as this can really offer prospective purchasers a lasting memory of your property. EPC It may not be something you see but an EPC is just as important. Energy Performance Certificates are the guidelines of how well your property performs in terms of energy performance and environmental standards. Every property that goes to market needs to have an EPC, so try to improve your rating before you have this assessment carried out. We always recommend checking on loft insulation, the Government recommends a minimum thickness of 240mm, so if you’re lacking this, it’s worth adding some additional insulation to hit that target. The use of energy efficient lighting such as LED bulbs can vastly improve the rating for minimal outlay. Ensure that your boiler is serviced on a yearly basis as it’s a selling point that all prospective purchasers will care about. Still Praying for an indian Summer this Autumn? For us gardeners, we have had a funny old season, extreme heat and humidity during late spring, followed by a rather changeable summer itself; one day sunshine, the next day showers. The seasons obviously got themselves in a muddle! This has meant, for my garden at least, that early in the season, lots of young vegetable seedlings and newly planted perennials and shrubs needed daily watering, leading to a summer which produced a bumper crop of courgettes, growing literally by the hour with the warm and wet weather writes dluxe’s Gardening Correspondent Frances Hunt of Goscote Nurseries. It is this time of year that the ‘ornamental’ garden starts to look a little shabby around the edges, with the summer flowering perennials coming to an end, and the winter flowering shrubs just holding back a little until the first frosts arrive. So many people say that this time of year is the real ‘low point’ of their garden, so it is worth thinking about including a few key ‘performing’ plants that will just extend that season and allow the garden to still look shiny enough for that impromptu barbecue in the Indian summer, that of course we are bound to get! Ceratostigma wilmottianum. There are very few ‘true’ blue flowers out there, and to see one really does catch the eye in the garden. This lovely small shrub is rather late to leaf, so don’t give up if by May it still looks like a bundle of twigs! New growth emerges from the base of this shrub, with small, attractive mid green leaves that really set off the sapphire blue flowers that emerge in late summer and early autumn. Clerodendrum trichotomum. A rather unusual large (but not particularly fast growing) shrub that will wow visitors to your garden. With gorgeous, large, fresh looking leaves through the season, the end of the summer reveals sprays of rather gorgeous pink-white star shaped flowers not dissimilar from Jasmine. The real wow factor arrives when these flowers turn to a glorious combination of pink and turquoise seed heads that remain on the plant well after the leaves have dropped. Cotinus coggygria ‘Grace’. Although not strictly a flowering shrub at this time of year, the glorious smoke bush has autumn colour worthy 42 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
of a mention. The ‘smoke’ like plumes of flowers will still be visible at this time of year, and the leaves will be turning a glorious scarlet colour that really will catch the eye. The best specimens of this lovely shrub that I’ve seen have been rather brutally chopped down to around 4 inches from the ground at the end of the winter. This promotes larger leaves and fresh new growth that is much softer than the old woody growth that so often gives these plants a bad name. JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN IN AUTUMN Collect leaves…. Endlessly! Leaves can produce some seriously gorgeous garden mulch. Collect and leave to rot in black plastic bags in a sunny spot for quickest results. Ericaceous plants especially will benefit from this fantastic mulch. It is worth only collecting leaves from your lawn, leave any that have happily fallen into the beds, you will only be double moving them! You’ll find by the spring that the worms have pulled the majority of them into the soil. Lift and split perennials. Once perennials have been established for a few years, they start to ‘flop’ and become unhealthy looking. Now is the time to grab a spade, lift the whole perennial and ‘slice’ it in half, at least! Sedum, Crocosmia and Aster especially benefit from this treatment. Be messy! Please, please, please, put your secateurs away. At least when it comes to perennial seedheads. There is so much to be gained from leaving attractive seedheads on over the winter period. Not only do they look fantastic during a hoary frost, but they are also great for wildlife too. Especially fantastic seedheads to think about including for this very purpose are: Eryngium giganteum, Verbena bonariensis, Alliums, and Agapanthus. Plant Broad beans. Broad bean ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ can be planted in October and November to give them a headstart in the spring, for very early harvesting. Extends the season of broad beans, and will give you a great start in the vegetable garden the following spring. For any questions or to chat about any of the plants mentioned, please contact Frances at Goscote Nurseries, frances@goscote.co.uk or give us a call on 01509 812 121.

GAME CHANGER Jaguar’s game-changing Jaguar XE has, since its launch at the end of 2014, picked up more than 60 major global awards affirming it as the most advanced, efficient and refined sports saloon that Jaguar has ever produced. dluxe delves beneath the bonnet to see what makes this big car purr.
The rear-drive XE is the only vehicle in its class to use an aluminium-intensive monocoque; an extremely robust yet light structure which combined with double wishbone front suspension and an Integral Link rear axle, is fundamental to the XE’s innovative benchmark vehicle dynamics.
The Jaguar XE has redefined the concept of the sports saloon and is regarded as the driver’s car in its class thanks to its intuitive responsiveness and ease of control. The whole experience of driving, whether it’s a leisurely drive to the office or a spirited shepherding through winding country lanes, is a pleasurable one thanks, in no small part to the XE’s rear wheel drive layout and lightweight contruction. It’s a testament to company founder Sir William Lyons’ vision: ‘The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive’.
The XE’s aluminium skin is formed around the fundamental principles of perfect proportions and aerodynamic efficiency and is the first model developed from Jaguar Land Rover’s new modular vehicle architecture. It’s the stiffest, most aerodynamic Jaguar saloon car ever built and it’s 2,835mm wheelbase and low seating position enable a streamlined profile- The XE has the lowest drag coefficient of any Jaguar yet – Cd 0.26.

From the strongly-sculpted bonnet to the streamlined, coupé-like profile, the
XE has a taut, muscular appearance. The very steeply raked windscreen and the rising waistline accentuate the sense of movement with Jaguar’s signature ‘J-Blade’ running lights ensuring that the XE is another instantly recognisable Jaguar design. Under the bonnets buyers can choose from a range of powerplants including the efficient yet powerful new 300PS Ingenium petrol engine. This 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant produces 400Nm of torque for effortless acceleration powering the XE from 0-060mph in just 5.2 seconds. It also offers CO2 emissions as low as 157g/km and fuel economy up to 41.5mpg Inside there are leaps forward in
access to all features and functions including ome of the most advanced driver assistance systems available such as All Surface Progress Control (ASPC), developed through decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems, which can electronically gain traction in seconds and is ideal for use on low-grip surfaces, such as snow-covered roads. There’s also laser projection technology to enables the XE’s optional headup display (HUD) to generate sharp, high-contrast colour graphics on to the windscreen directly ahead of the driver, even in direct sunlight. The XE range starts at £28,295 for the entry level SE model which features standard equipment such as Satellite Navigation, cruise control, 17” alloy wheels, DAB digital radio and multifunction softgrain leather steering wheel, to the XE S, £48,045, the most performance-orientated XE model that features a race-inspired interior; heated, perforated Taurus leather seats; tread plates; and leather sports steering wheel carry the S logo. The Griffin Gears Up for Autumn
Set in the heart of the Charnwood Forest between Bradgate Park and Swithland Woods, The Griffin Inn is the jewel in the crown of the Odd John Group. Built around 1700, The Griffin Inn – as it is now – was originally the Griffin Hotel and has been put to several uses in its long history including brewery, bakery and village mortuary! In Victorian times, an annual village fair was held outside the pub on the Feast of St Leonard in November. Since being taken on by the Cooledge family, this historically-significant building has been lovingly renovated (and extended) making it more than a bit special, now boasting traditional village pub, luxury wedding and events space and even an award-winning deli/ café. In a sense, it has been restored to its glory days bringing relaxed dining with a laid-back country style with open fires, a warm welcome and, importantly for us country folk, a dog-friendly policy that attracts locals and visitors alike. The Griffin Inn, led by chef Gavin Smith, is passionate about supporting local business and using local produce wherever possible: their game, including Venison, is sourced from Bradgate Park, just down the road, for example. It doesn’t get fresher than that! This attention to detail is also evident across its wider seasonal menus and specials board, meaning The Griffin Inn is not only perfect for special occasions, but for any time you want 50 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
home-style cooking and comfort food. In addition to The Griffin Inn is the newly refurbished, Old Stables, which provides a perfect, standalone space for events as varied as corporate showcases – such as the recent Burleigh’s Gin event featured opposite – to parties, wakes, weddings and all things in between. Call them for details. As mentioned, The Griffin Inn has successfully launched its own brand "Odd John" in recent years. This has not only spawned a deli in Quorn, but also on-site in Swithland, offering Odd-John branded store-cupboard goodies, homecooked food, freshly baked cakes and an award-winning Afternoon Tea. Why not give The Griffin Inn a try this Autumn? You’d be ‘odd’ not to. The Griffin Inn is at 174 Main Street, Swithland, Leicestershire, LE12 ATJ. Proudly distilled in Nanpantan, Leicestershire, Burleigh’s ticket-only event at The Griffin Inn was held in their Old Stables, which recently benefited from a major refurbishment to create a stunning multi-purpose entertainment space.

Presided over by Master Distiller, Jamie Baxter, guests were taken on a ginsoaked tour of gin past and present with The Griffin Inn pairing the five gins of Burleigh’s with a gin-infused and inspired food menu. Gin-ius. Over the course of the 3-hour event, Jamie demonstrated how the laws of distilling have changed over the years, which has caused the revitalisation in craft gins, as we know them today. He explained the botanical ranges and blends within the gins, which lead to the story of how the gin got its name: Burleigh Wood, which is adjacent to the distillery, is where Jamie first came across Silver Birch, dandelion & burdock, elderberry and iris. They were the botanicals that went on to inspire the first recipe – and it seemed only fitting that this ancient Leicestershire woodland gave its name to the gin. This slick evening, created by The Griffin’s in-house events team, is just one of a calendar of events taking place over the coming months and raised funds for local charity, The Jake McCarthy Foundation, which is a Rothley-based charity committed to raising money and awareness for Brain Tumour research.

KETCHUP BOTTLE ARTIST EDWARD WAITE TO EXHIBIT IN LEICESTER Ahead of his exhibition and Meet The Artist event at Oberon Gallery in Leicester, we caught up with critically-acclaimed cityscape and ketchup bottle artist, Edward Waite, to find out his artistic process and what people can expect from the exhibition Who are you? I’m Edward Waite, artist. Tell us about yourself: I grew up in Skegness on the Lincolnshire coast. I worked as a beach lifeguard in the summer holidays which is where I got my inspiration for my first pieces of artwork. I was painting surfing silhouettes and waves, taking inspiration from my surroundings on the coast. Where did your love of art and painting begin? I’ve always loved art. My Auntie Jane was an art teacher when I was younger and she always encouraged me to keep experimenting. Describe your style. I use sauce bottles filled with paint to add movement and 3D texture to my cityscapes in the final stages so they all finish with a life a of their own. What inspires your paintings and sketches? I spent two years after university travelling. I visited lots of different cities and carried pocket sketchbooks with me to note down and sketch anything that I found inspiring. These helped me create my first collection What is your artistic process? I take some photographs but I create an initial sketch as a blueprint for the painting so I can map out how it’s all going to work on the canvas. How did you get spotted initially? I was working on some paintings in my parent’s picture framing business and one of the suppliers came in and put me in touch with Buckingham Fine Art Publishers. Your work is highly sought after, how does that feel? Amazing! I’m always pleased when someone loves one of my paintings enough to buy it but I am surprised at just how successful I have been, it’s a dream come true. Are you aware of any famous people owning your paintings? Yes, I have had a commission from Coronation Street’s Mikey North and Tom Daley the Olympic diver bought one of my pieces at my Plymouth exhibition. I also have a piece in Phil Collins’ house, which his agent bought for him. Is there any city in the world you have not yet painted? I’d love to do Hong Kong one, day but that is one place I never got to on my travels. 54 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
What is your favourite place in the world and why? My favourite place is New York; it is where I had my ‘eureka moment’ to use sauce bottles in my work. You’re showcasing your work at the Oberon Gallery in Leicester, have you been to Leicester before? Yes, I love Leicester and I’m really excited to be coming back to visit Oberon Gallery on October 14th! What can the people of Leicester expect to see in the exhibition? They should expect to see my journey around the famous cities of the world and there will also be some local gems of Leicester brought to life in my unique style. Do you have a favourite painting of your own? My favourite painting is the Taj Mahal as this is where I proposed to my wife and it is the only painting of my own that I have on the wall at home. You’ve achieved great success and are still under 30: what is the proudest moment of your career so far? One of the first articles ever written about me, 4Walls magazine described me as “on the way to becoming one of the most renowned artists of his
generation”. What advice would you give to your younger self? Don’t be afraid of being knocked back and keep going. What is your advice to anyone considering the purchase of art for the first time? Always buy what you love and can’t be without! The Edward Waite ‘Meet the Artist’ event takes place 14th October. To sign up to this event and be kept up to date with Oberon Gallery news and events, head to their website. www.oberongallery.com For more information on Edward Waite, check out www.edwardwaite.com Oberon Gallery is at 27 Loseby Lane, Leicester, LE1 5DR. BUSINESS.

Pieces of business advice that never go out of fashion Summer time is easy in my wardrobe. It is shorts and shirts with flip flops or comfortable shoes topped off with a baseball hat. After all, I am American. When I sit back and look at people’s businesses as they prepare to retire or even to start spending less time in the business and more time for themselves. They are living in a “summer wardrobe” business. writes dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland's Business Editor Bart Dalton.
Analysing businesses is similar to building a wardrobe for all seasons. The simple things we need when we start in business are: 1. A pair of shorts and a pair of jeans: Having a product to sell and someone to do it. 2. A small collection of t-shirts: Simple budgets and financial goals. 3. Functional set of shoes for all occasions: Website and marketing materials. Steve Jobs and Peewee Herman have one outfit that they wore all the time. It made it so that they did not have to think about making the clothes match. It also made it so you couldn’t discern the nature of the meeting by the attire being appropriate to match the scenario. 60 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Your business might be set up for all seasons but let’s look at the things you need to add into the business closet. Here are the fun accessories to make sure that you can not only show up, but be noticed when it comes to this little soirée called success. 1. Hat and Sunglasses: You need to have some messages or communications that get you noticed and stand head and shoulders above the rest. Become a thought leader in your arena and make sure that people think of you first when it comes to the problems you solve. 2. Sport Jacket or an amazing handbag: This really gets back to having a 3-5 year plan for your business and the people involved in it. Do you have career paths mapped out for your top employees? Does everyone know how many clients or profit levels you want to achieve? The reason these are like a sport jacket or amazing hand bag is that they will be on show when it comes to how your business looks from the outside. It is also a great place to store lots of unnecessary stuff until you decide to have a clear out. 4. Healthier you: there is no substitute for this. Clothes look better on healthier people and so does business. No matter how great your business is or your superior intellect people are animals and make snap judgements that take some time to rebound from. Get your self sorted. It takes time but you will have fun doing it. Autumn (or Fall as we Yanks call it) is in full swing. The new year is barrelling down on us. It’s time to add to your business wardrobe and make sure you don’t have that same old tired look; there’s nothing worse than feeling classic yet looking dated.
150+ Events for LBF 2017 Tickets to Leicester Business Festival events taking place between 23rd October and 3rd November, are now available to book through the Business Festival website leicesterbusinessfestival. com. Around 150 events will form a packed programme in the third annual Business Festival to take place in Leicestershire. The Leicester Business Festival, partnered by Leicester Castle Business School is the region’s largest business event. It will comprise many different seminars, conferences meetings and webinars that will appeal to businesses of all shapes and sizes from sole traders and microbusinesses right up to employees in large corporate organisations. Over 95% of the events are completely free to attend, although tickets must be booked in advance and are available on a first come first served basis. There are hundreds of different events in the programme spanning the key sectors from communications, marketing and business support, professional and financial services, retail and food and drink to tourism and hospitality, logistics, creative industries and much more. The final programme will be released on 3rd October and can be viewed at www.leicesterbusinessfestival.com Sometimes even in a simple wardrobe you need to have an upgrade. Don’t let your jeans get thread bare, update your products and packages to match the type of client you are looking to attract. If you have had the same shirts, financial plans, then maybe it is time to make sure they fit properly to your current business physique instead of just adding on a Cost Of Living adjustment. Lastly do your shoes still fit comfortably and do they match the rest of your wardrobe. Website update? Make sure you and your team have a digital plan. If you don’t plan to add to your wardrobe make sure the items you have make you look as good as they can. Need any other ideas or want to add even more to your Business Wardrobe? I would love to help. Visit my website www.bartdaltonconsulting.com for some blogs, tools and other fun content. BUSINESS. we still see quite a bit of resistance. UK Figures this year indicate that promotion of women to Board level roles has dropped from 32.1 per cent in 2016 to 29 per cent. The evidence is clear that women are not taken seriously by the gender pay issues in which women continue to lose out even when clearly doing the same job as men. Women are just as capable and effective as their male counterparts, but this is clearly not being seen or believed. How important are the awards for the new generations of women? National labour statics to August 2017 record the weekly hourly contribution of women in the workforce is 27. hours per week and that of men is 36.9 hours. This clearly shows that women are making a considerable contribution in the working environment, just under 10 percent that of men. However, we still live in society where we see or believe that a man’s contribution is more important or better than that of a woman. This is nonsense and we need different ways not just to say that, but of showing it in real terms. We have the evidence all around us. The East Midlands Women’s Awards are hugely important as a means of identifying, showcasing and recognising the amazing and outstanding contribution of women who are making a huge impact in their chosen fields. This gives the next generation of both men and women powerful examples of what women are doing in real terms and what we can do, to dispel the unrealistic impression about how much women contribute in the society as a whole.
THE EAST MIDLANDS WOMEN'S AWARDS The East Midlands Women’s Awards is a prestigious gala ceremony to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution made by women across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, and Northamptonshire in areas such as public and professional services, entrepreneurship, Arts, Media and Music, leadership, community impact, charity and volunteering. Ahead of the Gala Awards, which takes place on 20th October at the Falcon Hotel, Uppingham, dluxe caught up with awards Founder Sandra Pollock to find out more. How did the idea for the East Midlands Women’s Awards come about? The idea for the East Midlands Womens Awards (EMWA) came about whilst reflecting on the many women I’ve supported over the years. Many feel unrecognised even though their contribution is outstanding and has made a tremendous difference for the 62 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
business, communities and the economy at large. After my tenure as National Chair for the Chartered Management Institute’s WiM Network I felt that there was a need to create something prominent in the East Midlands that recognised, promoted and celebrated the amazing contribution of the work that women in the region have been doing. The response we’ve received for the idea has been tremendous, as has been the support we’ve received both from businesses from women and men across the Region. Do you think it’s still hard to be taken seriously as a woman in the business field? Most of us would like to believe that things have changed and it would be true to say that there have been slight improvements or it may seem that way because we’re talking about it more. Unfortunately, even with the recent hype around the Lord Davies Women on Boards report in 2011, the government’s push to get an increase of women on boards,
When I was growing up I didn’t see any women from my culture or ethnicity presented in the media that I could hold up as examples that I could emulate. Not that they were not out there, they were not being promoted or celebrated. If there was one thing would have been different for me in terms of my self-belief as a young black woman it would have been role models outside of my own family. Role models make a huge difference, but role models who live in your city or region are even more powerful because they are within your reach. We want to recognise and share the excellence of our many female examples and role models to spur on women of all ages and to further change the mind set of those making decisions about employing women in their organisations. There has not been enough change in this area. And more importantly to inspire this new generation of professional and business women. I want my daughter to be confident and know that her contribution will be seen, appreciated and valued just as that of a man. We want women to feel good about themselves and what they do and receive the recognition they rightly deserve. To find out more about the awards visit www.emwawards.co.uk

BUSINESS.
It’s all gone KuKu Last year saw the launch of luxury networking, KuKu Connect. A year on, we’re catching up with KuKu’s founders, Stephen Goddard and Philip BrooksStephenson ahead of their glittering 1st birthday celebrations. Dluxe: So Stephen and Philip you’re the team who have brought us KuKu Connect; you’ve created quite a stir here in Leicester, so what’s brought this buzz to the business community? Stephen: Well, you say stir, that’s a great point to start off with; when you visit one of our monthly Connect Receptions the first thing you receive is a cocktail or something suitably fizzy, as well as delicious canapes. We aren’t your ordinary networking set-up. Our ethos is building authentic business relationships and the best way to achieve that is through informal and relaxed networking, or ‘connecting’ as we call it. A key factor to our success is the diversity of businesses both in size and sector, it’s important to have a good mix, as meeting five people offering the same service is not effective for either you or them! Dluxe: So where do your Connect Receptions take place: Philip: We visit a different luxurious venue each month, which helps create a fantastic buzz and is often a great conversation starter. We’ve been very fortunate to work with the likes of Chutney Ivy, Oberon Gallery, Marco Pierre White, Sherwin Hall Kitchens, Cocoa Amore, Burleigh’s Gin, The Boot Room restaurant and, most recently, the King Richard III Visitor Centre and Helen Howe Atelier. We welcome any business to attend a KuKu Connect Reception – take this as your formal invitation from us to come along and see for yourself how KuKu Connect works and meet our members. Dluxe: So how did you come together as a team? Philip: We both met being involved in a costume ball at Christies in London, which was attended by members of the Royal Family. Stephen was working on the creative and design elements whilst I was working on the marketing/PR aspects; these being our professional backgrounds. Together, we now have KuKu Creative, which develops brands for clients who want to stand out in their market place, and now KuKu Connect, creating something different for businesses wanting to develop, grow and raise their profile in a fresh and effective manner that gives great value. Stephen: We both personally offer something different to KuKu Connect not 64 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
just in our expertise, but in our personalities, too. Just like a good gin and tonic (I’m the gin and Philip is the tonic), I’m known for being quirky and you’ll always spot me in bright trousers and garish shirts, whilst Philip is more of a traditionalist in suit, tie and never without a handkerchief. We are partners in life too and we’ve found a great niche in which to focus our creative flairs in the form of an innovative and colourful networking service that works.
"Leicester is a buzzing hub for both culture and business"
Dluxe: What was it that attracted you to Leicester? Philip: Leicester is a buzzing hub for both culture and business and we’re passionate about our community. We said right from the very start that KuKu Connect should champion all the great business and community organisations across the county, promoting Leicestershire’s success stories.
Stephen: Basically we love Leicester, we feel really proud to be part of it and that’s why we launched KuKu Connect. We are welcoming, friendly and open, so perfect for those new to networking. Our members are always telling us KuKu Connect works as well as being fun to be a part of - it’s a community in itself. Dluxe: So we hear you have some rather sparkling plans to celebrate KuKu Connect’s 1st birthday in October: Philip: Our 1st Birthday celebrations take place at Lumbers Jewellers followed by Bruxelles in the presence of Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire who will be representing The Queen. We will be joined by dignitaries, business leaders and the stars of the show, as ever, our members. Stephen: It’s going to be a fab evening, black tie, gorgeous dresses, wonderful food from the Boot Room Restaurant, fizz, Burleigh’s Gin and a good dollop of moreish chocolate from Cocoa-Amore, music and some rather special goody bags. Dluxe: Well, it looks like another great year ahead for you. Congratulations to KuKu Connect on its first birthday and we look forward to celebrating with you in October. Escape the Inheritance Tax trap With some careful planning and sensible advice, family wealth can be kept for future generations to enjoy. There are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than Inheritance Tax (IHT). For older generations, the prospect of paying up to 40% tax on what they leave behind is difficult to contemplate. For some children and grandchildren, grappling with IHT is something they are ill-equipped to do. Yet more and more families are going to have to deal with IHT. The latest figures from HMRC show that the government collected £5.1 billion in IHT in the 12 months to May this year – up 9% on the same period last year1. IHT is set to be even more of a money-spinner for the government in future; the Office for Budget Responsibility predicts that receipts will increase to £6.2 billion by 2020/21.
rise gradually by £25,000 a year to £175,000 per person from April 2020. Crucially, the £325,000 threshold and the new RNRB are transferrable, meaning that you can pass both tax-free allowances onto your spouse or civil partner when you die. With the RNRB increasing to £175,000 in 2020/21, a couple could eventually pass £1 million to their children or grandchildren without attracting IHT. Müdd points to this as an example of “some of the genuinely generous reliefs that have been introduced”. But he adds that the devil often lies in the detail. “When it comes to IHT planning, advice is essential,” he says. “The reliefs often come with caveats and, unless you understand what those are, you are making assumptions. Quite often, those assumptions are wrong.”
“The earlier you start thinking about IHT, the easier – and less damaging – it is"
Many more families are being dragged into paying the tax thanks to soaring house prices, while rising Stamp Duty costs are making elderly people think twice about downsizing. However, there are steps that families can take to mitigate its impact. For Tony Müdd, Divisional Director, Development & Technical Consultancy at St. James’s Place Wealth Management, there are two crucial elements: taking advice and planning.
“The earlier you start thinking about IHT, the easier – and less damaging – it is, and the more options people have,” he says. “That doesn’t mean that, if you leave it late, it’s too late. There are still things you can do; they are just more limited.” New rules introduced in April this year allow you to pass on more of your estate free of IHT. However, many people are not fully aware of the thresholds, so it’s important to be clear on the facts. The threshold at which your estate becomes potentially liable for IHT at 40% is £325,000 per person. In the 2017/18 tax year, there is an additional £100,000 ‘residence nil rate band’ (RNRB) that can be used against the value of your property – but only if you leave it to a child or grandchild.2 The RNRB is set to
For instance, those without children cannot benefit from the RNRB; thus, if you leave your home to a niece or nephew there will be no additional allowance. Likewise, it may not be available when a property has been left in trust, because the beneficiary is a trust, not a direct descendant. It could therefore be important for those who have put such arrangements in place to review their Wills.* Furthermore, estates valued at £2 million or more will lose £1 of the RNRB for every £2 of value above £2 million; meaning that if your estate is currently worth more than £2.2 million, there will be no RNRB. Even if you do not consider yourself to be particularly wealthy, you may still find that the value of your individual or combined estates exceeds the tax-free thresholds, so anything that reduces a potential IHT bill is worth considering. Moreover, thoughtful estate planning can help you pass wealth on to your designated beneficiaries in the manner you choose, while reducing your taxable estate.
5
ideas to make life less taxing
There is plenty that can be done to keep a potential IHT bill to a minimum. Here are a few ideas: 1. Use the allowance for individuals to give gifts worth up to £3,000 a year (£6,000 if you use the previous year’s allowance as well) without incurring any IHT. 2. Individuals can pass on larger amounts of money free of IHT, so long as they live for seven years after making the gift.
3. Take account of the ‘normal expenditure out of income’ rule – if you give gifts out of your income and, in doing so, don’t damage your standard of living, they are exempt from IHT, and there is no upper limit. 4. Spread your giving over a number of years rather than paying out a lump sum. 5. Don’t give away too much too soon – otherwise you could be dependent on your children. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. *Will writing involves the referral to a service that is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James's Place. LAST WORD . but actually they were calling Dick and Dom on BBC. That was quite a major incident because this phone call went on for ages and we had to try and explain to them who on earth we were and what programme they’d called into. Quite crushing as well I suppose. Well yeah a little bit because they wanted to call into them and not us. As people say they’re like Waitrose and we’re more like Lidl. You’re coming to De Montfort Hall this Christmas to star in Beauty and the Beast, who are you playing? Well there isn’t an actual character name at the moment obviously it’s kind of the Panto comic type, the Buttons, Wishy Washy, Smee type role. You’ll get the usual Dick n Dom type stuff, well you’ll only get one half of Dick n Dom so they’ll be some Bogies in there obviously and I’ll be getting kids on the stage at the end and it will all be done in the usual Dick n Dom style and they’ll be some mess as well I’ve heard. Things always get messy when one of us is around.
bogies!
RICHARD McCOURT
Richard ‘Dick’ McCourt of children’s TV’s Dick and Dom fame has been part of the BAFTA Award winning duo Dick and Dom for twenty years and has appeared in some of the most popular shows in CBBC history including Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow, The Legend of Dick and Dom and Absolute Genius amongst others. DLUXE caught up with Richard ahead of his starring role alongside ITV’s Heartbeat, David Lonsdale and Leicester’s very own singing sensation Sam Bailey; who returns for a second year in Leicester’s biggest panto – Beauty and the Beast at De Montfort Hall. So how many times a day does someone shout ‘Bogies’ at you? Probably four! It’s crazy, all these years later, we finished that in 2006 so you’re talking 11 years ago and it’s still going strong. I think YouTube has revitalised it and I think a lot of our ex viewers of Da Bungalow now show their kids it, so there is a whole new generation of viewers coming on to Bogies. How does it feel to be a part of a whole generation’s childhood experience? It just makes us feel old really, we’re like Grandads now. We started in ’96, so ’96 to 2006 that is one generation and we’ve done another generation 2006 to 2017. So some viewers who used to watch us in ’96 are now like 30 years old and they’ve got their own kids so it’s bonkers. So you’ve almost passed doing the University tour? No we’re still doing those, we’ve got a load of freshers dates coming up at the end of this year because obviously 20-22 year olds, 10 years ago they were Bungalow viewers. It’s all different age groups at the moment. Brilliant, so you do the same job but now

with added alcohol? I wouldn’t say that. Lemonade all the way! What was your proudest memory of that time period? I think just doing Saturday mornings in general. I if you ask any presenter who’s ever done Saturday mornings like Philip Schofield or Zoe Ball etc, they all say the best job they’ve ever had is Saturday morning television because it’s just such a hoot. You just have a really good laugh. It lasted 5 years and we won a couple of BAFTAs so it really was the highlight of our career. And it was all live wasn’t it? Yes it was all live! Every Saturday morning and Sunday morning we were on the digital channel live so it was two live shows a weekend. Obviously live TV is a rarity these days in many ways so we had the joy of that as well, you know anything that could happen television. The transition from television to stage hasn’t really been that difficult, has it? No, I suppose stage is very much like live TV, anything could happen. It’s exactly the same except you’ve got the audience there watching you so actually it’s probably even worse because on live TV you’ve got cameras so you don’t know what anyone’s thinking but on stage you get everyone telling you what they are thinking. It’s probably even worse in that respect but it’s still as much fun. Once you are on stage you’ve got to make sure nothing goes wrong because you are in front of a live audience. I mean the audience obviously like viewers of live TV always love it if something goes wrong. So we’ve learnt loads but we’ve been doing stage work since we started so we’re very used to it. What was perhaps the biggest thing that has ever gone wrong? There was a famous clip of a viewer of Da Bungalow that called in and thought they were calling Ant & Dec on ITV
Is this your first time working in Leicester? In Panto, yeah. I think we’ve done some bits and bobs at the space centre, we did a lot of filming there for our show Absolute Genius on BBC in the Space Centre so that’s probably the closest we’ve got to filming in Leicester. What is it about the genre of Panto that makes it so enduring; what's the appeal of it? Well I think for some kids it’s the first time they’ve ever been to the theatre which is an amazing experience, to see a live show in the theatre. Panto is obviously geared towards kids but families as well so the whole family can come along and enjoy it. I think Panto has moved on from the kind of cheesy Christmas cracker type jokes and I think you’ll see in this Panto this year, I’ve been talking to the Scriptwriter and I think it’s going to take a very modern twist. They’ll be lots of stuff about social media and I think there will be ways for you to interact with the show as the shows going on. Sounds intriguing. With working all over the Christmas period, you probably have Christmas Day off and that’s it. Yes Christmas Day off and New Year’s Day off, I think that is probably much it. I think maybe one day a week off but it’s quite hard work, Panto. It’s two shows a day daily so it’s non-stop. You have to be fit for it. So after Panto, what’s in the pipeline for you? We’ve got a new series of Diddy TV coming out which is Diddy Dick n Dom from Da Bungalow, they’re still going strong with their TV parody show on CBBC. I think next year we are working at Butlins again doing our live shows there and Edinburgh Festival and some more filming for Diddy TV. So lots going on! Beauty and the Beast runs at De Montfort Hall from 16 Dec - 7th Jan. Tickets at www.demontforthall.co.uk
