Letter Editor from the
Hello and welcome to the Summer edition of dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND magazine. At the time of writing, I’m melting. It would seem – for today at least – that Summer has arrived and I, for one, plan to grab it with both hands and find a beer-garden or cocktail terrace to de-camp to this evening. Few things can beat a glass of something chilled at sunset. With this in mind, I’ll keep my letter concise. I want to welcome you to this Anniversary Edition of dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND. Who would’ve thought that in just six years, we’d witness such incredible growth in our business, but also in the city/county – or is that vice versa? Either way, we’ve enjoyed reporting on the blindingly brilliant things about Leicestershire and feel privileged to be doing so. Thank You.
What I don’t always tell you about is our online and social media content. Because there is so much going on ALL THE TIME, we don’t always have space to squeeze it into the magazine, so you should always head over to our website and social media platforms for exclusive stories, online-only content or see enhanced versions of what you’ve enjoyed in print. Over a million people read our iPad version of dluxe last year and we’re regularly reaching over 130,000 people each month, so if you’re not already logging on, you’re missing out. Big time. Being a bit jazz-handy, we were especially excited to interview the inimitable, theatre-heavyweight, Cameron McIntosh, ahead of his spellbinding Miss Saigon production that is being developed here in Leicester (you may have spotted gorgeous actor types in the Cultural Quarter?) and that makes its UK Tour debut at Curve this summer. We’ve also scoured the region for our annual Wedding Guide, which is jampacked with quirky ideas to make your wedding spectacular – from venues to rings and even Honeymoon Hotspots. As well as this, we have our much-loved regulars such as our Arts Guide, Bar & Restaurant guide – including reviews of the multi-award-winning Chutney Ivy – plus society pics from recent events at Oberon Gallery, Kuku at Chutney Ivy and Fairfield School Opening. So, I say, let’s crack open the bubbly and toast our great county. Leicestershire, we’re very proud to call you home and here’s to an exciting year ahead.

The proposed hotel will boast 165 rooms over five floors, together with meeting rooms and conference space, reception, lounge and dining areas as well as a leisure complex including a fitness suite, restaurant, sky bar, retail units and enhanced Leicester Tigers conference, corporate and supporter facilities. Welford Road already offers 35 suites and almost 3,500 sqm of event space and is the largest venue of its kind in the East Midlands.
Tigers chief executive Simon Cohen said: "I'm pleased to announce further news on the proposed development of the Granby Halls car park site. "Liaising with potential investors and the city council, we're close to reaching an agreement with a global hotel provider to operate a high quality hotel complex which will add an exciting dimension for fans, partners, businesses and the city of Leicester.

FINDING THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILDREN Parents know that choosing their child’s school is one of the biggest decisions they’ll make, so they need to get it right. Aside from practical considerations, like proximity to home and travel arrangements, they will look at academic success rates and the quality of teaching, along with facilities for sports and the arts. Above all, they want to ensure their son or daughter will be happy, confident and healthy through their education and beyond.
It is, of course, in a child’s formative years that teachers lay the foundations for a lifetime of learning. Helping them develop high standards of literacy and numeracy is vital, which is why English and Mathematics form such an integral part of teaching at Fairfield Preparatory School, a member of the Loughborough Endowed Schools Foundation. Earlier this year, Fairfield underwent a major £8million expansion, creating state-of-the-art classrooms, a new gymnasium and spaces for arts, performance and food technology. Pupils also have the chance to learn through outdoor play at the Forest School, which uses the natural environment to nurture their confidence and imagination while improving teamwork and problemsolving skills.
Girls attending Loughborough High School will experience similar levels of academic excellence under the leadership of Headmistress Gwen Byrom, who is president-elect of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA). Alongside core curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on the arts, with opportunities to join the orchestra, bands, choirs and drama club.
Moving up to secondary school is both an exciting and daunting prospect for young people and their families. Within the Foundation, Loughborough Grammar School, Loughborough High School and Our Lady’s Convent School each strive to help pupils reach their full potential, yet each has its own discernible identity and approach to learning. Renowned for its impressive academic record, Loughborough Grammar School is a leading boys’ school, catering for day pupils and boarders. In this collegiate setting, students are equipped with the skills they need to achieve exam success and go on to university, often Oxbridge or one from the Russell Group. Students are continually motivated with everything from maths challenges to political debates – and everyone at the school was delighted to see two boys recently take the title of Young Engineer of the Year 2017 at the national Big Bang competition. Boys are however, still very much encouraged to pursue their own hobbies and interests, whether it is sport, drama or music through the wide range of school clubs that are available.
In 2014, the school took the innovative step of taking on an artistin-residence and the scheme has continued ever since. Working with pupils of all age groups, the artist helps to spark their imagination, both in creative subjects and more widely. At Our Lady’s Convent School, the focus is very much on offering a rounded education, guided by Catholic principles. It consists of a co-ed preparatory school, and a senior and sixth form school for girls only. As well as helping girls to achieve the best grades they can, the school is known for providing a supportive environment in which to learn. Its recently-appointed Headmaster, Dr Julian Murphy, is a strong advocate of character education, and the teaching teams work closely with parents to integrate this into school and home life. Character education is not an add-on to the curriculum, but something that is woven into every aspect of the teaching at Our Lady’s Convent School.

Bluesuntree firmly believe that good design should be at the heart of every home. They also believe that it should be affordable and be accessible for everyone to enjoy. Their enthusiasm is evident in the products they showcase both in their extensive Birstall showroom and on their website. Although they are a local company the word continues to spread and Bluesuntree supply not just Leicestershire, but all over the country and the rest of Europe too, particularly France and Germany where their unique style is exceptionally popular.

The latest collection of furniture is inspired by the Steampunk look. For those of you who aren’t that familiar with this style, it started out as a Science Fiction genre with a nod to historical 19th century industry. The punk element references not conforming to stereotypes as it brings together different styles into an eclectic collection. With the industrial look still very current in interiors, this unique style takes that look to another level.

The new Punk range from Bluesuntree combines a pure warehouse style with its textured driftwood structure; alongside the elegant hairpin legs reminiscent of mid-century classics. This unique furniture company loves to inspire their customers to create their own distinctive look and this range is no exception. If you are searching for something different, that you won’t find in every large store or furniture chain, then try taking a look at Bluesuntree, we’re sure you’ll be inspired. Furnishing your home should be fun, not a chore, well that’s what Bluesuntree think anyway; and after browsing their website, we’re sure you’ll be motivated to be creative in your approach too. Remy HAIR & BEAUTY Rediscovers its 50 Year Heritage as it Prepares for Growth
One year on from the death of his father, Remy of Remy Hair, Marc Fuccio talks exclusively to dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND magazine about how he plans to take, arguably, Leicester’s biggest-ever hair salon brand into the future – something he knows his Dad is watching over each day.
background? At first it was a daunting thought, but with the support of a brilliant business partner, Sho Barber, and my wonderful staff (Peter, Linda, Shannice, Corey, Hydie, Dee & Shannon), the transition from working in the music industry to a hair salon hasn’t been as difficult as I once thought. The reason being, I’ve been managing DJs and Club Brands like Ministry & Cream etc for the last 10 years or more, so am used to managing a business. The challenge for me has been to familiarise myself with the hair product side of the business, but although it’s been a steep learning curve, I’m really proud of the team and everything we have achieved; both Corey & Shannice have really blossomed and have been producing some outstanding creations.
Tell us a little bit about the history of the salon? It was established by my Dad in 1979 . My Dad originally came to England in the 60s as it was the hair fashion capital of the world and he knew that this is where he had to be to further his career. As for coming to Leicester; this was a city that was blooming with new business and creative opportunities.
What’s been the biggest lesson you’ve learned over the last twelve months? Keep calm, don’t panic and plan.
He’d been working as an apprentice with maestro Di Lucca in Milan, followed by moving to Carita in Paris. Once he hit the UK he worked with companies Vidal Sassoon & Leonard which then helped him to establish his own style and look.
Is it right that he set up Remy with the Mascolo Brothers who later went on to form TONI&GUY? The Mascolo Brothers were
already establishing themselves, however, my father saw a new future and so together they opened their first salon in Leicester as Remy, TONI&GUY on Belvoir Street. Although the salon was very successful, a few years later my father decided to take his own path.
Your Dad went on to launch the Remy Hair Extensions, which are now sold across the world - how does that make you feel? Although the brand was initially designed and produced by my father, the product was advanced and pushed by another company. However, I still feel very proud of the fact that his idea/design is now one of the leading hair products around the world, and this is why we stock Remy Hair at the salon with our new Hair Up/ Extensions stylist.
Your Dad was known across the world and not only styled celebrities but also had clients fly in from the four corners of the globe. This must feel like big shoes to fill! To be honest, I can’t
What do you think your Dad would be saying to you if he could witness the changes you’ve made and are planning to make? I
think he would be very pleased with our changes. Not only do we offer the same high-quality work, but we’ve also ventured in to Hair Up, Hair Extensions and we now also stock jewellery. We have also just launched a One Stop Shop for Weddings and other events, which include offering musicians, marquees including furniture, DJs, Live PAs and, of course, the hair and make-up for the bridal party, whether in the salon or onsite.
What is next for the business? Well we’re really looking forward to developing the wedding and events side of the business that I mentioned. We also have some new and exciting staff joining us shortly, plus, we’re expanding Remy Beauty. You have an event planned to relaunch the business, what can we expect from the event? Hahaha, yes, the event is now in its final
process where we will be bringing a new event to Leicester that will incorporate the salon, its staff, but also a damn good music event at the same time. We want to offer a whole new experience to the public that we feel will catapult the salon to new heights. Watch this space for a new era.

explain how proud I am of my father. Coming from Sicily to being one the most well-known hair designers around the globe is just outstanding. And YES, these are very big shoes to fill, indeed. However, with all the superb support, especially from clients, I think he would be proud.

Summer drinks in the city There’s nowhere better than a lively city centre pub to truly feel the cosmopolitan vibe of a city in the summer. Whether it’s a traditional pub garden, a high-street pub or modern pub restaurant, Leicester has it all. The growing food and drinks scene is breathing new life into the city and it’s easy to be spoilt for choice! We’ve picked three of our favourite pubs to soak up the sun in the city! King Richard III- Highcross Street What a transformation for this city centre pub! Located in the heart of the city next to the Highcross shopping centre, this is a great place to unwind after a hard day’s shopping. Chris, Andy and Andrea have created a welcoming, modern and comfortable pub, which already has a great reputation for its amazing yet simple food and atmosphere. This comes as no surprise as they also own the hugely successful St Martins Coffee and Crafty Burger in St Martins Square. This beautifully restored Victorian building now serves locally sourced high quality food and drink. Combined with the addition of a lovely little courtyard, it’s perfect for summer days in the city.

The Old Horse - London Road Not short on personality, this award-winning pub is a must for anyone looking for a great selection of beer and cider on the bar. Looking out over Victoria Park and only a short walk into the city centre, this pub is a key destination for many when planning a night out. Just walking in, you are met with the fun and playful eccentricity of Kev and Dee who run the pub, making sure all are welcome including dogs and children who are always kept entertained. There is a huge, hidden gem of a beer garden out back while inside the cider room - essential for a Cider Pub of the Year winner - is a delight to any cider drinker with a rotation of craft cider on draught every month! Grab yourself a drink and soak up the friendly atmosphere of this pub.
The Knight & Garter - Hotel Street It’s clear that Sam Hagger has a passion for great pubs, great food and great service. Not content with running two award winning pubs, Sam has just finished renovating a third. The Knight & Garter is the latest addition to The Beautiful Pubs Collective and is handily placed next to the city's brand new multimillion pound continental inspired piazza area near Leicester Market. The Knight & Garter is more than just a pub, offering a restaurant, cellar bar and art gallery and is sure to raise the standard in the city. Serving unpasteurised beer from an imported beer kettle as well as local wines & spirits, the quality of drinks on offer is among the best around. Make sure you grab a seat on the stunning alfresco terrace overlooking the piazza, the perfect place to soak up the culture of the city in style!

Great pubs need great people
Pubs don’t survive without great people running them. From the owner to the bar staff, everyone involved makes your experience what it is. What makes a great pub owner is simple passion. Colours of England We love Little Greene’s range of paints – they go on beautifully and we can vouch for how hardwearing their floorpaint is first hand! Now there’s even more choice as a revived and revitalized colour card has been unveiled comprising of 184 shades: 170 individual colours 14 of which are repeated in varying strengths as ‘Colour Scales’. The card spans over 300 years of historic interior design and includes many authentic 18th, 19th and 20th century shadesthat sit harmoniously alongside contemporary shades conceived to meet the requirements of 21st century living. As a result, the card, whilst respectful of period architecture, is also completely in tune with modern life and today’s interior design aesthetics. All shades on the ‘Colours of England’ colour card are available in the full range of paint finishes including their renowned Absolute Matt Emulsion is also now complemented by their new Flat Oil Eggshell, which is flatter than a regular eggshell having just a 10% sheen level.

Taking the Rayns Setting up a business takes bottle and a passion to offer something different, or at least better. Our respect goes to everyone who takes the plunge, as operating your own outfit is often a million miles away from being employed, but one man who’s reached his ‘carpe diem’ moment is Oliver Rayns, who’s just launched his eponymous high-end estate agency and it’s his ambition to change the way you think and use estate agencies in Leicestershire.
What drew you into Estate Agency in the first instance? My Grandparents established a highly successful commercial property development company in Leicestershire in the 1970’s which is still trading to this day. So, I’ve grown up around bricks and mortar and have always had a passion for residential properties. I was always taught the best way to learn is to start from the bottom up, so after graduating from University I decided to head into estate agency. I knew for me that this would give me the grounding I needed in the residential industry, and after several years of working for a highly-regarded agency I decided now was the right time to follow in my family’s footsteps and start my own business. At what point did you decide you’d like to create your own estate agency brand? After having worked for another agency for several years and learnt my trade, I knew there were things I wanted to do differently and didn’t have the opportunity to. As time went on these thoughts kept popping into my head, so I decided to take the horse by the Rayns (sorry for the pun), find business premises and go it alone. Why is now the right time to launch Oliver Rayns? The market is highly active; my offices are located in the ever-popular Clarendon Park and I feel the area is crying out for an upmarket brand to establish itself among an array of delicatessens and restaurants. What is it that sets you aside from other agencies in the market? I’d like to think that our honest approach, sales strategies and marketing really sets us apart from our direct competition in the area. I’ve always taken great pride in presenting a property to the best of my ability; this doesn’t just mean the description and wording that goes into creating property details but the finer points too. Take photography, a lot of agents will
happily photograph on their smartphone, in low light, without a tripod and images speak for themselves. Properties marketed with blurry photos, their reflection in the glass, I’ve seen it all and have always thought how does an agent get away with it. At Oliver Rayns we really pride ourselves on our ability to represent your house in the best possible way and that really can make a huge amount of difference in the final price achieved. If you had to summarise your agency in a few sentences, what would you say? Innovative, honest, approachable and trustworthy. These are the words I have installed as the company ethos because it’s what the public think that the majority of estate agents lack. We really care about achieving the best prices for our clients, in the most realistic timeframes possible. Often you know what you want to be, but what do you not want to be as an agency, too? Untrustworthy, as once the trust is broken it’s impossible to regain. If an agency gets a reputation for being shady it really sticks and that’s 100% not what we are about. What is the dream? To grow this company into a brand that is well respected and regarded in the whole of Leicestershire. You are launching your agency with an enormous coup: a £2million property. Is this the shape of things to come for Oliver Rayns? I’d like to think that this brand is comfortable selling one bedroom apartments to multi-million-pound estates, and with years to come, I can only strive to establish our heritage based on our ability to showcase a broad range of properties in all locations in Leicestershire.

DREAMLAND In a career that has spanned over fifty years, Cameron Mackintosh has produced more musicals than anyone else in history, including the three longest-running musicals of all time, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, which are still running extraordinarily successfully across the world. His latest project , a new production of Boublil and Schönberg’s legendary musical Miss Saigon has been a recent smash hit in the West End and is about to embark on a major UK Tour that kicks off at Leicester’s Curve this Summer. DLUXE Magazine’s Jonathan Fraser caught up with Cameron to discuss just what it takes to produce a hit and after fifty years just how hands-on he is in the process. The excitement around Miss Saigon’s tour has been immense. What do you think is at the heart of the show’s success? Ever since audiences first saw “Miss Saigon” in London in 1989, the British public have embraced this contemporary but timeless story, spectacularly staged with an extraordinary score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. In 1989, it was only about 14 years after the Vietnam war and therefore, it was very much considered an American story. Over the ensuing 28 years, sadly, numerous wars all over the world such as in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, the Balkans and the Ukraine have happened and the story of innocent or ordinary people caught in the background of war now involves the whole world. What can audiences look forward to? The new version had a wonderfully successful two year run in London, and has recently opened on Broadway where it was nominated for Best Musical Revival at the 2017 Tony Awards. In some ways, it is even more gritty and powerful than the original, with the same enormous cast, so there’s a lot to look forward to. Part of the problem of success is that it can take you away from actually doing the thing that you love. Do you still manage to be hands on? Is that important for you? I’ve been so lucky with my career in choosing to work on subjects that the public have also liked and so several of my key productions continue to find new audiences and therefore, to my astonishment, I have been able to build up my production company with such brilliant people that I am able to concentrate mostly on the art whilst everyone else does an amazing job ensuring that wherever we create shows around the world, they are as good as if I was there all the time. In truth, 90% of the actual work is done by my brilliant team, enabling me to have the time to be hands on where it matters. This is the third time you’ve opened a national tour at Curve, the other two being your production of Barnum and Mary Poppins, what makes Leicester the right place to open such a big show? In the 1970’s, when my career was getting going, Leicester was also my launching pad for tours at the old Haymarket Theatre, out of which I produced new productions of “My Fair Lady”, “Oklahoma!” (with the assistance of the Arts Council of Great Britain) and “Oliver!”. This year, I will have been working as a Producer for over 50 years and I find myself once again creating shows in Leicester, this time at the Curve, which has fantastic facilities and is wonderfully accessible for my production team to get back and forth from London. You’ve been producing Musicals now for almost 50 years, why do you think audiences love them so much? The main reason I think my shows keep attracting audiences is that the subject matters that I am drawn to are timeless and continue to appeal to audiences both in the UK and around the world. Your career is peppered with record breaking shows and firsts, what do you think are the ingredients for a successful show? I have no idea what the ingredients for a successful show are! I’ve always followed the mantra that I put on something I love, do it as well as I can and hope that the audience like what I like. So far, I’m very lucky that I’ve been more right than wrong. What attracts me to work on a specific musical are the characters followed by a good score. For me, the story is everything and a song that doesn’t help a story to be told, even though it might be a great tune, isn’t enough. At what point do you know a show’s going to be a hit? I really don’t know if a show is going to be a real hit until after it opens and how wide the appeal is of the particular subject. You can have a show which is on for a short time and does incredibly well but doesn’t have the broad appeal of “Les Miserables” or “The Phantom of the Opera”. Very dluxe-magazine.co.uk 21
dluxe edit few shows have that kind of enduring appeal and lots of shows that are worthwhile doing and get done very well, are only destined to have a certain length of run and there’s nothing wrong with that. What’s your favourite part of the process? My favourite part of the process is working with the authors to get the material in shape to hand over to the director, choreographer and designers and then coming back into the theatre once the creative team have got the show on its feet and fine tuning the disparate elements of the show because however much one pre-plans, one can never judge what one is doing until you get the chemistry of the actors on stage playing to a live audience.
“I rarely put myself through the butterflies of opening night”
What’s the most nerve racking stage? The most nerve racking part is usually the grinding of the technical period. What might have been delightful in the rehearsal room has to find the right place within the huge mechanics of putting on a musical and then working in front of the audience.
Do you still get opening night butterflies? Yes and no. Of course, one wants everything to be a success but I have been doing it long enough now that I know that there comes a point before you open where you have to let the show go on for the audience to give its reaction, so I rarely put myself through the butterflies of opening night - I’m more out of the auditorium than in it and it is at that point that fate takes over. What show have you been most proud of? I’m very proud of most of my shows otherwise I wouldn’t do them. I have had probably more long running hits than anyone else. I just consider myself incredibly fortunate that so many people continue to like the work that I have done around the world and I am very proud of that. One of the joys of success is that it opens up other avenues – you own and have been actively restoring 8 theatres in London- is that a big passion for you now? Architecture has always been my passion, ever since I appreciated the difference between a one bedroom flat and a house. Having gone to school in Bath, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, I have learnt to appreciate design. However, as a schoolboy I only dreamt of becoming a producer and therefore it is only because of the huge success I have had through my productions that I have been able to afford to buy some theatres when I was offered them. It was the late 22 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
great impresario Lord Bernard Delfont who first suggested that I buy two of his theatres as his family no longer wanted them, and that turned out to be the start of my theatre collection and the reason why it is known as Delfont Mackintosh Theatres.
It has become an equal passion of mine to restore these wonderful Edwardian buildings that are mostly over 100 years old and bring them back to life with the amenities one should be offering the public in the 21st century. I know from the renovation and refurbishments that I have done, that there is no reason why these theatres shouldn’t still be there in 100 years’ time. I’m currently going through the biggest renovation yet at the Victoria Palace Theatre, which is planned to reopen at the end of this year with the much anticipated American musical “Hamilton”. When I have completed it, the Victoria Palace will have one of the biggest stages and be one of the most beautiful musical theatres in London. What’s next for you? Is there a new project you can let us know about? Apart from a huge amount of time being taken up with several architectural projects including the Victoria Palace, I have also got a musical movie that I’m working on and the demand for my shows worldwide is bigger than it has ever been with over 30 of my shows in various stages of production around the world in the next few years. We also recently launched the European arm of Music Theatre International, which I co-own with Freddie Gershon. The European team, based in London, will license more than 4,800 productions a year to professional theatres and producers, amateur societies and schools across Europe and will ensure the greatest titles in the musical theatre repertoire will be well looked after and continue to be seen by many generations to come. However amongst all of this, one of the things I most look forward to is my life in the country and grabbing as many holidays as I can - just as I have done since I was an impoverished stagehand and cleaner at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane back in 1965 when I first started working on “Camelot”.

Of all the items of jewellery you’ll ever own, your wedding ring is the most important. A constant companion to your daily life, choosing the right ring can be harder than you think. We talk to Carli Onguc of Luxury Jewellery Boutique, Lanes Fine Jewellery, to find out how to choose your perfect wedding ring.
Do wedding rings follow trends or go in and out of style? No not really; wedding rings, like the sentiments behind them, are timeless. I would say it’s more about tradition and individuality than fashion or trends. What are the key things to think about when choosing a wedding ring? Well it’s almost the same questions you ask before you say I do; you’re choosing this ring above all others to wear for ever more so will you still love it in 30 years’ time? A wedding ring is like no other piece of jewellery as it is with you always. It is the one part of your big day that you always have with you so it’s a big decision to get right. How do you make sure you get exactly what you want? The key is to be open minded, push your boundaries and try different styles on; styles that you never imagined as well as what you had in mind as your perfect wedding band. You’d be amazed at how many people choose something totally different from what they’d originally envisioned. Is there any such thing as too much bling? Noooo! LOL. Bling can be tasteful but it’s not about their being TOO much bling it’s about having the right bling!!! If you want your ring to make a statement then you just need to make sure that it’s the right one. You read a lot about making sure your wedding ring matches your engagement ring and coordinates with your partner’s. What’s your take on that? It’s completely your choice- it’s your wedding ring! It represents an important day and person in your life so you need to have what you want. Maybe consider having the same colour metal or same family of metal but there are no real rules. We do have some clients, whose circumstances have changed between their engagement and their wedding, who take the opportunity to upgrade their engagement ring at the same time as having their wedding ring designed. We can reset the stones from their engagement ring with new ones in a new design reusing the old mount etc. so that they have something more representative of their life now going into marriage. This is becoming increasingly popular. What is the process when choosing a wedding ring at Lanes? At Lanes we work with you to get the best ring for you! We will advise you about metals and designs but ultimately it is your choice. All wedding rings at Lanes are made to order so you know that your wedding ring has been made especially for you. We have a vast range of wedding ring ideas but also offer a bespoke design service and can put most designs on to most wedding bands. We can add your partner’s heart beat or thumbprint to your ring or even the first verse of your wedding dance inside; the possibilities are endless!

CUBA
Energetic but tranquil, relaxing but not boring, developed but authentic, Cuba has recently opened up as a new travel destination and made its mark on the worldwide stage. The country’s political history has preserved Cuba’s heritage,

Cuba is the perfect place to continue your wedding party…the streets of Havana are where the Spanish, Caribbean and African influences merge to create son, salsa, rumba and more. Hear salsa at the beachfront Jardines del 1830 and jazz at the intimate La Zorra y el Cuervo. It’d be a crime to holiday in Cuba and not sample the local drink of choice: rum. The country’s economy was built on rum (and cigars) and if you asked any Cuban, we would bet our bottom dollar that they would argue rum runs through their veins! Summer Swimwear
A well-cut swimsuit can make you look as though you have shed pounds and work wonders at helping you to look and feel at you’re best. It obviously depends upon the individual, but if you want to feel stylish and comfortable whilst you’re by the pool or on the beach then I really would treat yourself, writes personal stylist and DLUXE women’s style correspondent Cleo Lacey.
Be sure to try your swimwear on before you buy, so you know what it looks like on you. If you need to go up a size compared to what you wear in regular clothing, do not despair! Swimwear tends to be cut smaller and fit tighter. Panic over. Your swimwear should flatter your exact body shape and accentuate your positive features as this will naturally detract from the negative areas you don’t like. Most people feel insecure about at least one part of their body. Those insecurities can definitely amplify when the bathing suit season arrives. We can’t change Mother Nature but we certainly can disguise her! Here are a few of my top style tips and tricks for all body shapes to help you become a complete beach bombshell!
If you carry your weight on your hips and thighs, let’s slim that pear! Pear shapes generally tend to have a good tummy, so let’s show this off with a two piece. - Avoid detail on the bottom, the less going on there the better! Opt for a solid plain coloured bottom - Bring the focus upwards, try a top in a lighter colour, with fun details or a pretty pattern. - Choose a fairly high-cut bottom, this will slim the thighs and create the illusion of longer, leaner legs. - Avoid boy shorts, although very popular with ladies trying to hide more flesh around the bottom and thigh area, they are actually very unflattering. They can shorten the appearance of your legs and make you seem wider than you actually are. - Many two-piece bathing suits are now sold separately, allowing you to mix and match and purchase a top and bottom in the exact sizes you need. - If you would feel more comfortable in a one-piece then always choose a plunging deep V-neckline. Although flattering on virtually any body type, they’re especially flattering on bodies with full hips or thighs such as a pear. This is because they draw the eye to the upwards to the top half of the body. 32 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
If you’re concerned about your stomach area, here’s some tummy trimming wonders! - Avoid a tankini at all costs! A tankini is a two piece swimsuit with a longer top that usually draws eyes right to the stomach area (the place that we are trying to avoid). They tend to ride up and expose what you don’t want people to see. - Do show some skin in your one-piece swimsuit. A highcut leg or low-cut top will draw eyes away from your middle area. - Don’t go for a shiny fabric, it highlights every lump and bump. Matte is much better. - Another great way to disguise a tummy is with ruched gathered fabric, this can be very flattering and camouflages extra weight and adds a decorative detail to the swimsuit. It can also pull you in and shape the waist. There are lots of slimming swimsuits out there designed to suck you in and flatter your tummy. If you’ve got curves, embrace and flatter them! - Play up your curvy shape with a fun print. Because an hourglass figure is considered the perfect shape for swimwear, you can feel free to choose a more dramatic print that will draw attention to your body. - Don’t shy away from stripes, just be sure they’re vertical or angled across your body. - Emphasize your defined waist by choosing a two-piece swimsuit. Bikinis show the most skin and will highlight your curves the best. - If your curves need toning slightly do not despair, you can still wear a bikini, just avoid thin string ties, which can dig and create bulges. - If you are not comfortable wearing a bikini but don’t want to go for a swimsuit then try a tankini. These styles cover most of the stomach but feature a separate bottom, offering the convenience of a twopiece with more coverage. - If you do prefer a onepiece swimsuit then go for a wrap style, perfect for cinching in your waist and showing off your curves. Remember to finish your swimsuit or bikini off with a gorgeous beach bag, some fab sandals or flip flops and a nice cover up. I advise a lot of my clients to buy a plainer swimsuit for investment purposes then add colour, print, pattern and even embellishment with a Kaftan. This will really polish off your beach/pool look. A kaftan is also great to use for other purposes on holiday such as wearing it in the evening as a floaty top with linen trousers or denim shorts. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure and become the sun goddess you have always dreamed of, those holiday snaps need to be shown off not hidden away! Still panicking and need a little help? You know where to find me...

GAME FACE The right pair of sunglasses can turn you from zero to hero in seconds and add some seaside swagger to your game this summer. Here’s our guide to choosing the right pair for you.
1
SQUARE JAW:
HOLIDAY HEROES
Aviators are a great shape for a square face. If you have strong features, the bigger the better, whilst delicate features are better suited to the small to medium sized option.
Whether it’s the heat of Hawaii or the temptation of Thailand, ensure you’re beach-ready this summer with these stylish must-haves. Here are some of our suitcase saviours.
1: Dolce & Gabbana T-shirt, £330: Bring the fiesta feel to your holiday wardrobe with this bright and beautiful T-shirt. Team with chino shorts to take your from the beach to the bar in an instant.
Oval and round frames look great edged with a solid acetate rim. For a more masculine approach, metal framework with dark lenses also look great on square faces, accentuating your chiselled features. Rectangular shaped frames with soft edges are a classic, unisex option so be warned; your partner will steal them. 2
ROUND FACE: Definition is key so slim your cheeks with a frame slightly wider than the broadest part of your face.
3
Angular styles will pull your temple higher, lengthening your face and break up the roundness.
4
Solid acetate framework in dark colours and prints create a defined outline and keep things masculine.
OVAL FACE: A large frame is best for the oval face as this will accentuate and chisel cheekbones.
8
Details on the arms will pull your temples out, adding definition to your face shape but make sure that the arms don’t sit too low on your face. Visor styles work great- make sure the lenses are dark. Metal framework will soften an angular shaped shade. 5
9
HEART / DIAMOND FACE: THE RULES Go for a more quirky, retro shaped pair of sunglasses.
Wrap-around frames work well in balancing out a diamond face shape whilst rectangular frames can balance out a pointed chin.
7
3: Moschino beach towel, £95: Reserve your sun bed in the most stylish way possible, with this designer towel featuring the brand’s signature logo. 4: Dior Homme tortoiseshell round-frame sunglasses, £345: As cool as shades get, these tortoiseshell sunnies have tinted grey lenses offering 100% UV protection. Of course, there’s the designer stamp on the arm too. 5: Tom Ford Neroli Portofino EDP, £155 (50ml): Perfectly capturing the cool breezes, sparkling clear water and lush foliage of the Italian Rivera, this classic cologne features citrus oils, floral notes and amber undertones.
Coloured frames and arms with strong detail will soften the lower portion of your face shape by accentuating the eye area. 6
2: La Mer Reparative Sun Lotion SPF30, £75: Not only does this offer great sun protection; it’s also packed with extensive antiageing benefits, leaving you with firmer, healthier looking skin. Win Win!

STYLIST’S CHOICE: CLIMATE CONTROL
Lightweight Suit
Your jacket needs to be lightweight enough to layer over a shirt or tee on cooler days without feeling oppressively hot. Look for unstructured and unlined styles – they feature minimal padding and will allow you to receive the full benefit of your summer fabric choice. A jacket in a shade of white, cream or beige is not only on trend but also reflects light whilst being timeless and extremely versatile meaning you’ll use for many years to come.
Single-breasted linen and cotton-blend blazer, selfridges, £510
T-Shirt
The mere thought of wearing tailoring in the stifling heat of summer can cause even the most hardened of men to break out in hives – stiff, starched collars, weighty fabrics, suffocating tie knots and of course - the sweating; so it pays to swat up on the basics which, when mixed and matched to produce looks that are comfortable, still cut a handsome figure. Ever wonder how these slick Milanese types saunter through a sweltering piazza in a three-piece suit without so much as breaking a bead of sweat? Well, there are ways to ensure you don’t spend the day constantly mopping your forehead; follow these easily executed styling tips and you’ll be well on your way to seasonal sartorial comfort.
The key to layering at this time of year is opting for pieces you can easily throw on and take off; depending on which turn the weather is taking. It’s about setting an outfit foundation that you can gradually build on as the day gets later and the temperature gets cooler. Being in an office in summer shouldn’t feel like an obscure form of torture. Armed with these simple guidelines, you’ll see that your work wear can be versatile all year-round; so long as a little more consideration is made for fabrics, construction and colours.
Double Breasted Blazer
Double-breasted tailoring is a look I’m not only championing for summer, but thanks to this season’s new textures and sharpened cuts, there are plenty of reasons to fall in love with the design all over again. An easy to wear design which will reinvigorate your working wardrobe for the summer without making too bold a statement, the double breasted blazer feels refined and slightly relaxed at the same time. Wear this in summer during working hours as part of a mismatched tailored look, pairing a navy blazer with light sand chinos, a white shirt and brown suede monk straps.
Second-layer navy double-breasted, Harvey Nichols, £555
Knitwear
Breathable, open weave knits are crucial when it comes to layering up in a refined way. Thin cotton v-neck jumpers in navy or grey never fail to look sharp when pulled over a crisp white linen shirt – a go to combination for the office on a chilly summer day. Pair with a slim-cut suit, seasonal tie and leather Derbys during the working week and with rolled up chinos and slip-on loafers for smart-casual occasions.
Chinos
When it comes to leg wear, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for styles that are either cropped or that can be easily turned up at the hems. Make sure your top and bottom half contrast or clash; the only head-to-toe colour that works is white, which makes for a striking summer getup providing you have the skin tone to see it through.
Short Sleeve Shirts
When it comes to short sleeve shirts, there are two main areas you need to focus on – sleeves and shoulders. The shirt should fit well across your shoulders without being too tight around your chest. As for the sleeves, they should finish around midbicep. Go for conservative colours such as white, blue and pink. Smarter Fine Stripe Short Sleeve Shirt, John Lewis, £35
Linen And Cotton-Blend Trousers, Selfridges, £240
Start by remembering that natural fibres are your friend during summer. This applies to every aspect of your wardrobe and not just workwear. Although linen is a great choice at combating the heat, it has, with wrinkles and creases, too much going against it for the ‘rat race’ and may be a little too scruffy for an office that demands a smarter appearance; but blended with cotton, it becomes a savior.
Selected Homme Rune Wide Stripe T-Shirt, John Lewis, £20
Barbour Pima V Neck Jumper, john lewis, £59
It’s officially summer time and for many of us, this means long hours in a hot office along with uncomfortable commutes for the foreseeable future. Dressing for the hot weather is not simple - we all know how unpredictable the British summertime can be writes DLUXE’s men’s style correspondent Pablo Collelo.
For those lucky enough to work in an environment where the dress code allows a degree of freedom, staying stylish and cool in the heat is easily achievable. Swapping out a restrictive shirt for something more casual instantly ups the comfort factor of your tailored looks, while also lending them a subtle contemporary edge. The humble t-shirt is a no-brainer – stick to stripes, flecked or plain and avoid logos at all costs. A white t-shirt with charcoal tailored trousers and brown brogues or with a suit will hit the sweet spot between smart and casual.

are able to envision themselves living. In particular, replace photographs with more generic artwork.
6. ACCESSORISE
Gently accessorise to make your property feel like a home. Use a soothing colour palette to allow one room to flow into the next, creating a cohesive feel.
7. SOFT FURNISHINGS
SELL YOUR HOME IN TEN STEPS When it comes to selling your home first impressions count. The experts at Alexander James Interior Design have shared their top 10 tips for selling your home faster through creative interior design. 1. BE YOUR OWN CRITIC
Start by casting a critical eye over your home yourself, picturing it through the eyes of a potential buyer. Try and think about the tastes and requirements of the type of person who might buy your home.
2. REPAINT
A fresh coat of a neutral paint colour can work wonders. Cover up more controversial colours, which could put off potential buyers by restricting their vision for the property. 40 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
3. FLOORING
If carpets look tired, tatty and threadbare, it’s a good idea to replace them, if your budget permits. At the very least, professional carpet cleaning can make a huge difference when it comes to brightening up a room.
4. DECLUTTER
Make the most of every inch of drawer, cupboard and wardrobe space that you have by removing unnecessary clutter. If you have somewhere to store it, you can even remove two or three pieces of furniture from each room, to really show your home’s features and create a spacious feel.
5. DE-PERSONALISE
Eliminate personal effects so that your home becomes a place where potential buyers
Soft furnishings are important and the use of luxury brands can really make a difference. While the brands themselves are unlikely to be noticed by the potential buyer, the overall impact will be to add a quality effect.
8. LIGHT IT UP
Homes should have bright lighting to awaken the buyer’s senses. Good lighting can make your home feel more spacious and enhance its features. It may be worth investing in some brighter light bulbs for maximum impact.
9. ADD FRESH SCENTS
Use beautiful scented candles and diffusers throughout the home, but most importantly in the living area, master bedroom and master bathroom.
10. STAGE YOUR HOME
Cast your eye over your home once more and stage it like a show home for every single viewing. Staging your house like a show home will allow potential buyers to feel that it is a property they would be proud to own.

TIME TO RELAX? It is that lovely time of year in the garden when all your hard work over those cold winter months comes to fruition; flowers are blooming, the lush new growth of shrubs and trees has emerged, and all we need to do now is enjoy it! That’s right isn’t it?! Unfortunately, as gardeners, our work is never finished, and there are a few jobs that will keep the garden looking at its best through this summer season writes Dluxe’s Gardening Correspondent Frances Hunt of Goscote Nurseries. The first rule of gardening at this time of year is: water!! Do remember to keep any new additions to the gardens wellwatered, and that does mean every single day I’m afraid. It is incredible how quickly the soil dries out, and even after a quick shower, if you burrow your finger down into the soil by about half an inch, you will probably find very little moisture. There are a few important rules to follow when watering during these summer months. Firstly, make sure you water first thing in the morning or last thing at night. You will do more damage than good if you water in the middle of the day; any moisture on foliage risks scorching. Secondly, make sure that you water right in the centre of the plant, which means that the water will get straight to the root of the problem! Finally, it may be necessary to give your borders a good fork over in order to allow water to permeate the soil. When the soil dries out or becomes compacted, water does have a tendency to run off, rather than be absorbed into the soil. If you have a lot of new plants, or a new hedge that needs watering, you could consider a ‘leaky hose’, a finely perforated hose pipe that permanently weaves through plants, and that can be left on for an hour or so, slowly drenching the surrounding soil. One other important job to do at this time of year is…..nothing! Well, at least in the case of bulbs that have already flowered! It is so tempting to just whip that tatty foliage off Alliums, Tulips, and Daffodils, however, please do resist. Bulbs are storage vessels, and need to reabsorb all the energy that they can in order to be able to flower the following year. You may even want to give the bulbs a feed with a multipurpose liquid feed in order to ensure that they flower well the following year. So unfortunately, those tatty leaves will just have to remain for now! Finally, wedding season is now upon us, and we all want to give that something ‘special’ as a wedding gift. It is a great idea to give a newly married couple a plant, something that they can include 42 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
in their garden, and which will remind them of their wedding day for years to come. There are a few options for plant gifts that are worth thinking about: Cornus contraversa ‘Variegata’- The classic Wedding Cake Tree. This large shrub or small tree grows in an unusual way, forming ‘tiers’ with its branches, just like a wedding cake. The creamywhite edge to the leaves means that it really stands out within a garden, and acts as a gorgeous contrast to the deep red stems. Rosa ‘Wedding Day’- A gorgeous rambling rose, that would look perfect over an arch, or tumbling through an established tree. This highly fragrant rose produces masses of clusters of white flowers, with lovely yellow centres. There are of course many roses with ‘occasion’ names, for instance, ‘Best Wishes’, ‘Special Occasion’, and ‘Warm Wishes’, any of which would work as a fantastic wedding gift. There are also tons of options for a more personal wedding gift, whether that be a plant with one of the couple’s names, e.g. Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’, or a tree that grew in the bride’s original family home. One of my most treasured gifts from my wedding day was a pair of tiny Oak trees, grown from two acorns gathered from the tree beneath which my grandparents’ ashes are buried. It’s always guaranteed to make me smile when I see those two little Oaks, side by side, in their terracotta pot.
For more details on any of the plants mentioned, or to have a chat about garden design and build, email frances@ goscote.co.uk or call them on 01509 812 121

IF YOU’RE INVESTING IN YOUR AUDIO & AV, YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE AV SHOW AT The ICC/HYATT ‘Try before you buy’. It’s a cliché because it’s true, but the reality of attempting to follow these wise words, particularly in the fast-moving world of music and TV technology, can be somewhat, shall we say, challenging. This autumn, though, help is at hand. The Audio & AV show brings the world’s leading audio and AV brands to Birmingham, enabling its visitors to leisurely view, experience and buy, the latest top tech. Whether you are considering getting into (or back into?) vinyl, are tempted by the latest music streaming systems, or are due a new set of headphones, this is a chance to try the latest audio kit and, at the same time, get invaluable guidance from the experts. The latest smart TV’s, will also be on display, bringing the likes of curved screens and striking 4K technology and all their derivatives to a single, smartly appointed location. The event takes place over the weekend of Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of September 2017 at the Birmingham International Convention Centre (ICC) and Hyatt Regency Birmingham hotel. Created by a team of hugely experienced show organisers, and in partnership with Superfi, one of the UK’s leading hi-fi and home cinema specialist retailers, the Audio & AV show has (literally) got you covered – the city centre
hotel is directly linked to the ICC making travelling between the two show zones a synch. Both the Hyatt and the ICC are ideal for hosting this event, bringing the space necessary to properly display the equipment, as well as providing comfortable surroundings for visitors. Expect to hear some of the world’s finest audio systems, enjoying them in not only smart surroundings, but also ones in which the organisers and exhibitors will create ideal listening environments. And remember to bring your own music and prepare to relax, taking your time to hear how your tunes sound on what may be your next home audio system. And once you’ve had a listen to the systems, you can get great advice from massively experienced exhibitors. In many instances, the guys and girls exhibiting in Birmingham are also the people who design the actual products. How often in life can you go shopping, and before you buy, speak with the people who designed the products? The same good news applies for those looking to checkout the latest TVs and associated technology. Brands already confirmed include LG, Panasonic, and Samsung and the space provided by the show enables visitors to experience sensational TVs in bespoke exhibition environments. The show is a family affair,
SPECIAL FEATURE
too, so bring the clan and compare notes. How does the TV picture look from an angle? How does it sound when playing movies? Is it good for gaming? This is an opportunity for the family to get together and have some productive and, no doubt, ‘lively’ discussions about which telly is best. And when you fancy taking a break from enjoying the great sounding music and stunning pictures, the show offers breakout areas where you can grab a coffee, relax, thumb through your brochures, and plan your next move. Nourishment – from an on-the-go snack to a sit-down meal – is also on the agenda, so there should be no excuses for not spending the entire day taking advantage of what the show has to offer. Visitors should also prepare for a few surprises. Many of the products on show will be receiving their debut in the UK, and even global, show outings, so you’ll be among the first to lay eyes and ears on the absolute latest technology. You can also prepare to experience some of the world’s finest audio systems, put together by connoisseurs and coming in at six-figure sums. This is a chance for the pros to dazzle and an opportunity for them to demonstrate that everyone can ‘hear the difference’, not just those with ‘golden ears’. Event Organiser Roy Bird said “The move to Birmingham was a very important decision for us, as this major City has never had such a show before, so in many ways has an untapped market; and with the
recent demise of the Gadget Show a real technological vacuum had been left behind for the two main elements of the Audio & AV Show. Also the use of two quite different, but complementary venues, both of high class, has allowed us to provide for pretty well every Exhibitor and Visitor expectation over the two days of the show “ Whether you reckon you have golden ears, or not, the Birmingham show is a golden opportunity for music and movie fans to adhere to the ‘try before you buy’ maxim, and all in the comfort of the luxuriously appointed Hyatt Regency Birmingham hotel and the spacious Birmingham International Convention Centre. Shopping shouldn’t be hard work, so if you want to experience the latest gear in the world of audio and TV, make a day of it and head to the Audio & AV show this September.

A Curry For All Seasons AT CHUTNEY IVY You can’t beat a good Ruby Murray, even on the hottest day of the year. Even though we were already feeling the heat, we just had to sample some of the dishes from the new summer menu at the multi-Michelin Recommended restaurant, Chutney Ivy, especially after its recent win at the prestigious Leicester Curry Awards, writes dluxe Editor, Jonathan Fraser. The title of Restaurant of the Year is a big one, so we wanted to see what made the awards panel of judges so impressed with the Cultural Quarter-based eaterie. Leicester has a huge range of Indian restaurants, but Chutney Ivy cannot be dismissed as just another curry house. From the high ceiling loft style interior to the jam jar Berry Mojito’s served to us upon arrival, you can tell this is a contemporary take on fine dining Indian style. Co-owner Shaf Islam greeted us and talked passionately about the dishes we were to sample that evening - all of them a modern take on the traditional Bangladeshi village food he loved as he was growing up. The ethos is of authenticity: familiar dishes cooked in the traditional way, but with a modern twist to enhance the depth of flavour rather than replace it. Shaf confides, “You’re being served a Korma, but it’s a Korma like you’ve never experienced before. A Bangladeshi Jal Qurma slow cooked with yoghurt and milk rather than cream. It’s not the sweet, coconutty korma you’ll be used to, you’ll love it.” This devotion to doing it ‘right’ is unusual in many Curry restaurants where culinary cheats can save time and money. But first there were starters to sample. New for summerand an inspired idea if, I may say so - is a platter of Indian Tapas. Catfish Pakora, Paneer Stacks, Aloo Tokki 46 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
(Potato Cakes) and Siek Kebabs all served on nan squares, which had us diving in for more. We’d totally recommend these to accompany an after-work drink or pretheatre snack on the outside terrace. Also presented to us was a Dim Bhajee Salad, which are boiled eggs sautéed in caramelised onions, roasted jeera and turmeric and served on a green salad with chillies; it was a fresh and palette cleansing starter for a summer’s evening – another dish harking back to Shaf’s Bangladeshi village. Alongside the Qurma, we delved into juicy chargrilled bell peppers stuffed with spiced mince lamb, paneer and peas – Capsico Leema Mattor. A simple yet flavoursome dish that was the perfect accompaniment to the Qurma and not too heavy for a summer’s night.
On to the main courses and, with them, new drinks. This time we went for Daquiri’s – Strawberry and Mango to be precise; ice cold and delicious and on 2-4-1 throughout the summer. The Qurma we had been promised arrived as centrepiece to our feast – Muragh, Jaal Qurma. Tandoor roasted chicken on the bone gently cooked in sweet spices of cinnamon, bay leaves, green cardamom, milk, yoghurt and green chilli with caramelised onions and fresh coriander. Shaf was right, it was absolutely delicious; the chicken was so tender and the sauce rich, well-spiced and sweet without being sickly. The accompanying naan and rice served us well, as we scooped up as much of the delicious sauce as we could – we practically licked the plate clean!
Time for dessert – just a little bit of ice cream to keep us cool and served with a golden ball of deep fried paneer with a mango coulis. It had the consistency of a steamed pudding and was simple, sweet and satisfying. Having sampled the summer menu, we can see why Chutney Ivy scooped the accolade of Restaurant of the Year. To earn that title, you must go above and beyond, offer excellent service and delicious food in a unique and welcoming environment. On all of this they score highly, changing the perceptions of popping out for a curry. We can’t wait to return - who’s up for Indian tapas?

In the months since then, their range of beers has grown as has their ambitions. Leicester pubs The Blue Boar, The Criterion, Broood@ Vin Quatre, West End Brewery and The Exchange are already stocking the brews, as is the Prince of Wales, Hinckley, and the Needle and Pin, in Loughborough. Framework is set in a beautiful red brick Victorian premises in Friday Street, on an industrial estate just off St Margaret’s Way and close to the Grand Union Canal. It takes its name from the city and county’s textile trade – a respectful nod to Leicester’s bygone framework knitters.
financial director Mick Willis and the project progressed when Andrew took voluntary redundancy in July. He has barely paused since. He said: “At the moment I’m making beers that have been popular with friends and family that have tried my home brews and we’re using American and New World hops.” Jonathan is hoping that once his personal licence comes through they will be able to sell their ales from the premises and also to be able to take them on tour to festivals and events around the city. The future is very bright for Framework.

It all began through a shared love of beer. Jonathan Briggs, the brewery’s sales and marketing director, met Andrew Goodliffe, now Framework’s head brewer, when the pair worked for the probation service in the city. Andrew had been home brewing for seven years and had completed a Brewlab course. In June, the pair met up with Mat Mabe, then chairman of Western Park Beer Festival. Mat brought in Jim Willis, who with Mat co-owns the city’s Bulb Studios, responsible for designing Framework’s logo and labelling. The pair involved their

£8 MILLION EXPANSION AT FAIRFIELD PREPARATORY SCHOOL
Fairfield Preparatory School has officially opened its £8m expansion with a special ceremony attended by prestigious alumni and local VIPs.
“Fairfield Preparatory School is more than just a school – it is a place to build new hopes and dreams. I am so proud to be Headmaster; it really is the best job in the world.
The new development at Fairfield, part of the Loughborough Endowed Schools, features spacious classrooms equipped with touch screen interactive TVs, a large gymnasium, specialist rooms for arts, crafts, food technology, and a performance space.
“The building project has provided Fairfield with an unrivalled environment to encourage pupils to build on their aspirations, make new memories and forge lifelong friendships.”
Over 500 pupils will benefit from the extra space. The expansion was needed to cater for the increasing demand for places in Fairfield’s Pre-Prep (4-7 years) department, allowing even more pupils access to the school’s high quality educational offering, while keeping class sizes small. Andrew Earnshaw, Headmaster at Fairfield said:
Another new addition is The Kindergarten, which opened in January 2016 with a capacity for 40 children, giving Loughborough Endowed Schools the opportunity to educate pupils from three years all the way through to sixth form. Considerable effort has been made to ensure the new building incorporates a balance of traditional and innovative technologies to achieve the lowest environmental footprint .

MEETING MANAGEMENT- AS EASY AS ABC
Three days left until the end of the month and you could really do without having these two meetings that you scheduled… you don’t want to be rude and cancel at such late notice, sound familiar? So how do you make sure that you make maximise your meetings and make sure you rule your schedule rather than having your schedule rule you asks dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland's Business Editor Bart Dalton. Here are the ABCs of finishing off the month in style. The hard part is that you need to prepare them ahead of time so if you are reading this with 3 days left...sorry.
Preparation:
Agenda is a necessary element to establish where the meeting is going to begin and hopefully end in a direction that will be beneficial for everyone involved. Background, get info on the people who are attending the meeting so that you can focus on the business at hand. This is where LinkedIn and social media will allow you to learn more. (Use your staff to make sure that you do not spend too much time on this) The more you can prove you understand your contacts personally then the deeper your meeting will be. Contact, email or call or text to remind that you are going to be discussing a certain topic, new product or an event or a client. Texts and professional reminders using LinkedIn messages will give you the platform to remind your clients why you are going to be meeting and tee up one or two items that you want to discuss. Invite them to share anything that they are looking to present to you.
Place and Pace:
Action: If you can meet with them on a walk and wander then you will probably be the first person that they have met with on a Business Walk. Museums, city centre tours or a walk around a park will make this a meeting to remember. The movement will spark different conversations and it is not too bad for the waist line any way. Breakfast: If you are going to meet and you are not in the school run parenting stage of your life then an early morning meeting can be the best. It means you are meeting with people before they have gone in to work to get lost in the minutia of their jobs. Conferences and events: Surrounding yourself with the fervour and noise around what you are trying to sell will create true gravity towards you and your products. If you sell building goods or services then find a place in your town where there will be a large volume of your clients, contacts and influencers and use it as the basis for planning or rescheduling meetings around. You can schedule a round table off the back of people being in town. One of the things that I get asked the most when I am doing talks to sales teams is: “How do I know when I am going to have a meeting that is going to take my Energy, Time and Focus and get me nowhere?” My response is that, “You never know for certain, but if there are any doubts then use one of the tests above. If they respond positively by agreeing to a walk around meeting or a early meeting, then you are in a good position.” As you read through the dLuxe Paperwork there are so many great articles. Choose a few and put your plans into place. ABCs or 3s keep it simple, and we all know that even the most complex things are made of simple functions. That is how you use easy things to make Networking power moves.

BOWLES meet the md: CHRISTOPHER MD ROSSELLS SECURITY Who are Rossells Security and what do you do?
Rossells provide security products and services to the homes and businesses of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. We were established in 1928 as a local firm of locksmiths and quickly became the go-to company for everything security. We have our Electronic Security Team, Master Locksmiths, Safe Engineers and Shop Counter Staff working together within the company to offer the complete solution.
How did you start in the company, explain your journey to where you are now.
My original focus in life was software development, but whilst working as a freelancer, I was also helping out at Rossells, supporting the busy family business. I began to see the potential for electronics and software to change the way homes and businesses applied security. Through long hours and determination, I was able to purchase the company from my parents and be free to develop the portfolio of services we offer, bringing innovation to our heritage roots.
What challenges has the business experienced whilst you have been a Director?
Shortly after purchasing the business, the 2008 recession struck. Companies and homeowners had no choice but to compromise on their security requirements and control spending. We also lost a collection of public sector contracts to national companies in 2009 that almost halved our workload overnight. It wasn’t easy, but we got through without having to lay off any of our talented and committed team.
What notable successes have you experienced?
I’m so proud of a collection of projects that we’ve been involved with over the years, but as I’m sure you can appreciate, I can’t talk about them due to the confidential nature of the security industry. I can however say how rewarding it has been to move the business into our new purpose designed premises on Heanor Street in Leicester.
Where can people find Rossells Security?
All customers are welcome to the Security Counter based within our building at 6A Heanor Street, Leicester, LE1 4DB. We have lots of products and safes on show, accompanied by expert advice from our staff.

Proud to deliver the right
What is your favourite thing about your job? ANNA: Well the fact I run three businesses makes me love what I do…! I need constant stimulation and new projects and challenges. In terms of the RBA’s I love the people we get to meet and engage with each year. JEMMA: The fact that the Rural Business Awards is positioned in the rural market and genuinely there to assist the rural market too is one of the things I love. My passion is rural and it runs through my veins. I get to indulge in finding out about some of the amazing rural businesses that exist in the UK and they continue to amaze me not just with their ruralness but with their ability to overcome the challenges and stand proud. What are you most proud of in the last year? ANNA: Having negotiated and secured the Amazon sponsorship before our third birthday JEMMA: All of it! The fact we are into our third ceremony makes me proud, the fact we have secured Amazon was the icing on the cake, it validated what we knew about the potential of The Rural Business Awards. Im also proud of us. We have continued to grow as a team, and overcome the challenges.
RURAL BUSINESS AWARDS' Anna Price and Jemma Clifford As the Rural Business Awards celebrates its 3rd birthday, we speak to Anna Price and Jemma Clifford about the Awards and how people can get involved. What is the background of the Rural Business Awards? ANNA: We came up with the idea for the Rural Business Awards in late 2014 while we were sitting round a big farmhouse table thinking of ways we could bring together people running rural businesses. At the time Jemma and I were both working on our own businesses and I was working for Jemma helping her to develop her strategy. We came up with the idea at about lunch time and by 4pm had already engaged a headline sponsor and were working on selecting venues! The rest has been an utter whirlwind! The aim of the awards is to give recognition to businesses operating right across the Rural sector, to acknowledge the breadth and depth of opportunity presented by the Great British countryside, as well as to celebrate the achievements of our rural businesses, from engineering through to artisan food producers and professional services organisations. The thirteen award categories are decided by an independent panel of judges drawn from the rural business sector, official agencies and rural charitable organisations. The 2017 Awards Programme in Partnership with the CLA has now been bolstered by the support of Amazon which we are incredibly proud of not only is it great for the awards, it’s also great that a Global corporation
What is the biggest challenge that you face? ANNA: For me one of the biggest challenges I face is running the businesses whilst being a Mum to two young girls - my family are the best, and support me and understand that I’m actually a better wife, Mum and daughter if I work. JEMMA: Time, Id like more hours in every day. I work - a lot. Sometimes I feel like I miss out on friends and family time and I find that upsetting at times. I hope for a day when I can achieve more balance but for now the focus is firmly on The Rural Business Awards and harnessing its potential. What do you think is the most valuable lesson you have ever learnt? ANNA: In life - that being different is a gift, we each have our own uniqueness that makes us special - if we learn accept our differences and embrace them we can live a life that is authentic. Never apologise for who you are. JEMMA: Wow, that’s a bit deep! But it would have to be respect I think. Respect for one another, for differences, for situations. Rarely is everything exactly as it seems. What does the future hold? ANNA: For me - I’d like to make my tech business as successful as the RBA’s, and deliver our exciting plans for the next three years of Rural Business Awards growth! JEMMA: Hopefully an incredibly successful third ceremony and a secured three year future for the awards. I’d like to make the awards my primary focus for the next few years. I have a website design and marketing company too that I am currently leaving in the safe hands of my studio manager. Like I said 'risk it for a biscuit and enjoy the ride!' I also hope that the business partnership between us both continues to grow, I don’t think I could admire anyone as much as I do Anna. www.ruralbusinessaweards.co.uk
EAST MIDLANDS WOMEN TO BE CELEBRATED WITH AWARDS
Women of the East Midlands are to be celebrated with the launch of the inaugural East Midlands Women's Awards (EMWA). The aim of the EMWA is to recognise women who live and work in the counties that make up the East Midlands: Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottingham, Rutland, and Northamptonshire. These are women who, through their outstanding activities across a wide range of sectors, make a significant contribution to the development and economic stability of their region. The inaugural gala ceremony will take place on Friday 22nd September 2017 at the Falcon Hotel, Market Place, Uppingham nd will support two local charities. There are 10 categories up for grabs which will reflect activities across the social spectrum, from ambitious entrepreneurs to community champions and Market Town Leader. All for girl power, dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND will be acting as official media partner on this exciting event. 60 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Founder, Sandra Pollock said; “The East Midlands is full of high-achieving women working in all sectors, yet we lack a regional celebration or recognition of this. Women make an outstanding contribution to our economy, innovation, creativity, community or towards business development. Statistic show regional employment is above the National average and the number of hours women put in slightly less than that of their male counterparts. Acknowledging women’s efforts will provide aspiration for further achievement.” For more information on how to nominate, contact Founder, Sandra Pollock, by email admin@emwawards.co.uk or on 0797 7227872

EARLY BIRD Taking action early in the tax year allows your money to work harder – and out of the taxman’s reach – for longer. The new tax year sees the introduction of a number of changes to taxation and savings. Faced with a tax system that seems to be ever more complicated, now might be a good time to review your plans, to understand what new opportunities exist and how any changes might affect you.
Tax, including the value of their family home. The rules, which could have a significant impact on estate planning, are complex and not everyone will benefit. For instance, estates worth £2 million or more will see the new allowance gradually tapered. However, the opportunity to make gifts of up to £3,000 each year remains unchanged, providing a way to give loved ones a financial boost and the chance to see them enjoy it.
Individual Savings Accounts
Savings and dividend income
April marked the 18th birthday of the Individual Savings Account and saw the annual allowance boosted significantly to £20,000 – an increase of over 30%. One in four adults now invest in an ISA, yet only 9% of ISA investors make full use of their allowance. What’s more, 80% of subscriptions continue to be deposited in Cash ISAs1, despite the record-low rates on offer and the impact of rising inflation on the real value of cash. The full tax saving and investment benefits of ISAs can only be achieved by investing for the long term, so it makes sense to use your allowance early in the tax year to put your money to work – and out of the taxman’s reach – for longer.
Pensions
One Budget surprise was the decision to cut the tax-free dividend allowance from £5,000 to £2,000 from April 2018. Although the benefits are reduced, it is still worth couples redistributing investments between them to maximise their allowances. But transferring assets to make the best possible use of ISA and pension allowances may be more important. The Personal Savings Allowance remains untouched. It offers a nil-rate Income Tax band on bank or building society interest of £1,000 a year for basic rate taxpayers and £500 for those paying at the higher rate. While not providing a complete shelter from tax on interest, the availability of the allowance continues to prompt questions over the value of ISAs as a home for cash savings.
Following the Spring Budget, the government was forced to drop its planned rise to National Insurance contributions for the self-employed. This has triggered renewed speculation that pension tax relief is still in the firing line, as the government now needs to find other ways to raise the lost revenue. A flat rate of pension tax relief has reportedly been ruled out, but a further cut in the annual pension allowance could be back on the table. Given the uncertainty, it seems sensible to make the most of the allowances and reliefs available now.
Non-doms
Junior ISAs
Employers and employees could be hit by new government rules on ‘optional remuneration arrangements’. Certain benefits are exempt and transitional rules apply for others, but the changes aim to tackle differences between the tax treatment of cash earnings and benefits, and could result in higher tax bills and National Insurance contributions.
The financial challenges facing younger generations are welldocumented. Only 34% of 25–34- year-olds now own a home, compared to 60% just 20 years ago2. University students will graduate with an average debt of £44,0003. The amount that can be invested for each child into a Junior ISA has increased to £4,128 for this tax year. An investment in a Junior ISA is locked in until the child is 18, at which point it is rolled over into a standard ISA. As well as offering a helping hand, gifting to children can also help older generations with their estate planning.
Inheritance Tax
The nil-rate band will remain frozen until 2020/21, but the new tax year sees the phased introduction of the new residence nil-rate band, set at £100,000 per individual in 2017/18, but rising to £175,000 in 2020/21. The combined allowances mean that, from 2020/21, married couples with children could pass on up to £1 million free from Inheritance 63 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
New rules introduced in April mean that non-UK domiciled individuals who have lived in the UK for at least 15 of the last 20 years will now be considered UK domiciled for Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax purposes, as well as for IHT. The new rules are complicated and could hit affected individuals hard, but there are steps that can be taken to help lessen their impact.

Introducing
Janine Edwards We’re all individuals and nowhere is that clearer than when it comes to planning our financial futures. Goals, hopes and aspirations alter from person to person so it’s important to get advice outside of the traditional ‘one size fits all’ style of financial management and getting to know your financial adviser and their backgrounds is the first step in achieving this. This issue we find out more about how financial adviser Janine Edwards got started in the industry. At 21, Janine Edwards was one of Lloyds TSB’s youngest managers, running a branch in Market Deeping, Peterborough. Now Janine has just completed a milestone 30 years in financial services – but life today is very different from the career she first embarked on. Janine has spent the last seventeen years with St. James’s Place Wealth Management, one of the country’s leading wealth management businesses. The firm’s advisers are called Partners, because of the way they work in partnership with their clients, and she is one of only a few females to reach principal status in a company which has more than 3000 Partners and advisers working throughout the UK. “I had a good grounding in banking, but I always preferred seeing clients face to face and joined St. James’s Place because I saw it as an opportunity to give clients much better advice, offer a distinctive investment management approach and a more holistic wealth management service,” said Janine, now 47. “When St. James’s Place approached me, I knew their reputation was formidable and that they were something special and different.” Her move to St. James’s Place brought an unexpected bonus - an introduction to charitable fundraising which has now become a passion. “I became closely involved in the St. James’s Place Foundation, which aims to improve the quality of life for those children and young adults in need as a result of disability or disadvantage” said Janine. “I was a member of the Foundation’s committee for nearly four years, looking at worthy causes to which grants can be donated, and still support the Foundation whenever I can. “The Foundation is an amazing and humbling set-up which is in many ways at the very heart of our culture as a business. It funds hundreds of projects each year and to ensure its needs can be supported, it relies heavily on the generosity and actions of Partners and staff to raise vital funds. “Over 80% of our Partners and staff make regular contributions to the Foundation via a monthly covenant, and last year a record £7.6m was raised. Since its inception 25 years ago, more than £50million has been raised and distributed to more than 760 charities.” Janine is also a Trustee for the ‘Star Trust’ Charity and regularly fundraises for ‘Rainbows’ Children’s Hospice and in 2016 held an evening of fundraising for the Star Trust and managed to raise over £50,000 for the Star Trust and for Alex’s Wish. Most of Janine’s clients are local people throughout Leicestershire and Warwickshire. “I’ve built up my business over the last seventeen years purely from introductions, recommendations and referrals,” she said. “Relationships are vital. I enjoy having a select group of clients, as this means I can spend more time with them, and look in a more in-depth way at individual financial issues. With an ever-changing outlook, and multiple changes in legislation, people today want more face to face contact, more advice and more detail – and rightly so.”
professional support that ensures you have complete belief that your children’s future is secure. Janine not only handles the arduous task of ensuring this, but does so in a manner that means you actually look forward to the next meeting.” Dominic Gomersall, Company Director, Leicester “Janine has become a very important person in our lives. When we both retired at the age of 50, we had some very important investment decisions to make. Janine rapidly established a high level of trust coupled with a high level of financial competence which enabled us to make the right investment choices, leaving us in a strong position today! She is always there when we need her to answer the myriad of questions which inevitably arise!” Mr P & Dr K Carr While offering a holistic wealth management service, Janine is particularly strong on pensions, investments and Inheritance Tax planning, and deals with private and corporate clients. Janine also provides specialist advice on Business succession and exit planning, Personal and Corporate Protection and tax efficient profit extraction. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The Partner Practice represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the Group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the Group’s website at: www.sjp.co.uk/products. The title ‘Partner’ is the marketing term used to describe St. James’s Place representatives. Each edition, we look behind the scenes at one of Leicestershire’s business leaders. This time, it’s Carrie Short, Franchise Director of Hunters Estate Agents (Stoneygate). What is your background? I started my career in 2005 working for a solicitor firm specialising in commercial conveyancing, but wanted something more customer facing. I then got a job as an administrator in another branch of Hunters in 2009 and worked my way to become office manager. During that time I got myself a BSc (Hons) Psychology through the open university and I have completed the HNQ (Hunters National Qualification) Sales Diploma. This is endorsed by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA). I took on the Hunters franchise for Stoneygate in June 2016.

I also feel honoured to be a part of people’s lives on on TV! TV! and to hear the stories of their lives. What are you most proud of in the last year? I am proud to have opened my own branch of Hunters. It is more than just owning my own estate agency though; Hunters has the very ethos that is the reason I do the work that I do: to help people, and to look after people’s biggest investments. Hunters don’t aim to be the biggest estate agent in the country, but we want to be the favourite.
Are there any dissatisfactions to your role? The sales process in this country is strange and stressful, and not many people realise that the estate agent has little to no power over the legal aspect, but we get the brunt of their frustration. I get upset by this because I want to help people, but sometimes I am physically unable to.

What is the biggest challenge that you face? It is a very tough market. Stock levels (properties coming to market) are at an all-time low and the general public are constantly nervous about putting their property on the market for fear that they won’t find somewhere. It’s a challenge to get the message out to people that buyers are prepared to wait, sometimes for months, for people to find somewhere else to move to because they know that it is the only way for them to secure the home of their dreams.

mind your p’s and q’s We all know that marketing your brand, products or services is gold dust for your business, but why do so many get it wrong? So many businesses invest in marketing, but never reap the rewards and this could be down to not following the 7 P’s; you might have heard of the 5 P’s of marketing, but to get it really right you need to follow all 7. Stephen Goddard, Creative Director and Brand Expert at KuKu Creative shares his tips of the fundamentals of successfully marketing your brand.
1 Product – First things first; is your product responsive to the needs of its target market? Is it relevant, affordable and accessible? Be honest! Second, know your product inside-out - you must be able to talk confidently about the features and benefits of your product both in person and in your marketing materials. Don’t send out mixed messages; if your product is about luxury does everything in your marketing say ‘luxury’? 2 Price – Is price an important factor to your customers and do you want to shout about it? For a discount store the customer is likley to be price driven so the answer would be yes, but if you’re selling luxury leather handbags then perhaps not. You might even be inclined to inflate the price of your handbags to reinforce your brand’s quality status. Price anchoring is also a useful tool - by placing a premium product next to a standard one you create a clear sense of value to the customer which in turn will make the custoemr think they’re getting a bargain by purchasing the standard product. (look out for this technique on restaurant menus!) 3 Place – Roughly 1/5 of the cost of a product goes on getting it to the customer so think creatively and carefully about how you connect your business to your target market. What are the channel options for you? Before the internet, Dell Computers analysed the personal computer value chain and eliminated the retailers from their distribution channel and started selling direct to the customer. This provided them with the option to pick the features they needed at a discounted price. It also furnished the company with the information available regarding 62 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
customer’s needs and requirements enabling them to predict market trends. 4 Promotion – How can you raise your customer’s interest when promoting your brand? Is it a special offer? A competition? A free trial maybe? Either way, your first step is to determine your target market and how best to reach them. A lot of money is wasted on ineffective promotion due to lack of research. Next you need the materials to let people know about it - are you focussing on social media? If so, you need a digital ad, or is your newsletter your most powerful tool? Ensure you apply a tracking code so once your promotional campaign is finished you can accurately review its success. 5 People – Ever heard the phrase “people buy from people’? Well it’s true as people are the most important element of any service. At some point in your business your customer is going to come into contact with you and/or your team so ensure the service is appropriate to the function. ie, a staff member taking an order will need to be quick, efficient and accurate whereas if your staff member is trying to sell an expensive product then relationship building and rapport are more important. Ensure you have the right people doing the right job. 6 Process – this is where you need to put your potential customers at the heart of your business. You need to consider the process they will go through before buying, during and afterwards and ask yourself - are you adding enough value? Is the process smooth enough? Are there any uneccesary steps? Take regular feedback and be prepared to alter the process and remember that not every customer will need to go through the same one.
7 Physical Evidence – this is the physical environment, or space in which someone occupies when they consume your product, so think about the functionality, ambience and how your brand is infused into this. If this doesnt apply then are there other ways a customer can evaluate your product before buying? Show you are a minimal risk by adding credence through price promises, gaurantees or awards. By encouraging your customers to become emotionally attached to your brand they are more likley to remain loyal to you, recommend you and spend with you. So there you have a brief snapshot of the ‘7ps’. If you would like to talk about your branding and marketing in more detail and find out how these can benefit your business please do feel free to book your free brand healthcheck at: Twitter: @Ku_Ku_Creative Email: stephen@kukucreative.co.uk Web: www.kukucreative.co.uk
Stephen’s talent and skill in branding goes back many years, so very much a born creative. His career, which began as a freelancer quickly gained him a reputation as someone with an eye for detail and natural flair for creative concepts. Now head of his own creative agency based in the heart of the Midlands, Stephen has advised international banks, pharmacy giants through to charities, consultants and new entrepreneurs.

Newby Castleman use social media to support local charity Leading firm of chartered accountants, Newby Castleman, has thrown its support behind Leicestershire charity Hope Against Cancer, and is encouraging its Facebook fans and Twitter followers to do the same by donating 10p, at no cost to them, with the click of a button. The firm, which has offices in Leicester and Loughborough, has set an ambitious target of 10,000 likes / retweets for its posts linking to the Hope Against Cancer website, with the aim of increasing awareness of the charity’s work at the same time as it raises funds. Follow Newby Castleman on social media to be the first to find out when the campaign launches. Founded by Allison Wilson CBE in 2003 shortly before she lost her battle with the disease, Hope Against Cancer aims to put into place her vision of Leicestershire and Rutland as a hub for research into cancer. The charity works in partnership with local hospitals and universities, raising funds to attract leading academic minds to the area and providing a platform for world-class cancer research. It has also made clinical trials available to cancer patients in the area. In 2012, the Cancer Clinical Trials Facility was opened at the Leicester Royal Infirmary – one of only a few units outside of London. Newby Castleman nominated Hope Against Cancer as its Charity of the Year in November 2016, and since then has worked closely with the charity on fundraising ideas. Nicola Cooper, Marketing Manager at Newby Castleman, explained: “We are proud to be working with a charity that plays such a vital role in the fight against cancer right here in Leicestershire. Cancer research is a cause that is close to the hearts of a number of our staff and clients.
“We have been searching for a means of not only raising money for this wonderful cause, but also highlighting the work that the charity does locally using our connections within the business world. “We have set a target of 10,000 likes / retweets for our posts, which we think is achievable – and if we reach it, not only will thousands of people across Leicestershire be made aware of the charity and its work, but we will also have raised an additional £1,000 to help fund that vital research. “This is just one of a number of ways in which we are fundraising for Hope Against Cancer this year, including a bake off sale for their ChaiTea Bold and Blue Week in July, along with a number of other events planned. Keep an eye on our social media feeds throughout the year ahead to find out how you can help us to support them further.” CEO of Hope Against Cancer, Nigel Rose, said: “It is great to have the support of local businesses, particularly an established firm such as Newby Castleman. Their support is vital in helping us achieve our goals of helping more people beat cancer and living longer. We look forward to working with them”

E DLUX people With Leicester and Leicestershire having the fastest growing regional economy within the UK outside of London, it’s little wonder that since its inception the Leicester Business Festival has been so well received within the city and county.
With influencers and innovators from around the county and the world congregating in the Leicester and Leicestershire between the 23rd October to 3rd November for the third festival, we talk to Alister De Ternant about his background in business, what visitors can expect from the festival and what makes the city such a great place to do business.
How did you first get involved with the Leicester Business Festival? I met Corin Crane when we had both started new roles within the city and were networking hard. It came out that we were both fed-up with the sheer volume of networking sessions; all of these late night events, that were all talking about the same thing but with different people hosting them. Don’t get me wrong, some of the city’s networking events were absolutely fantastic and absolutely well placed but what struck us was that there was no collective approach. We also noted that there was no collective voice about what was going on in Leicester and Leicestershire and this was at a time when Leicester and Leicestershire were starting to grow substantially and noticeably– and it wasn’t just about football or Richard III! The economy was really starting to make strong strides forward and investors were starting to look at the city seriously. We wanted to do something that, with a consistent voice, let these people know this is what Leicestershire is doing, how it’s innovating and how it’s positioning itself to be a leader in business, not just in the UK, but globally. Through support and discussions with a few people including David Simms at the Mercury and Maxine Aldred who used to be at the Federation of Small Businesses along with the support of Sally Kowal, who was communications manager at the LLEP, we fleshed out how we could address this and the idea of the Leicester Business Festival was born.
What’s the biggest challenge that you’ve faced in relation to the Business Festival? I think it was getting people to buy into the concept. It was something that was new and at the time it came about people only just started having faith in the local economy, let alone shouting about it openly.
"Last year Leicester was the fastest growing economy in the UK"
Very quickly the idea clicked with people; in year 1, we did 80 events, 7.500 people attended and about 14% were from outside the county. Year 2 saw 118 events in the space of 2 weeks, c.12,500 people attended with 24.8% from outside the Midlands. My own company, Associate Events, now has the contract to run Leicester Business Festival for the next 3 years. We’ve already got some great headline supporters for year 3 and have already had 38 expressions of interest to put on some really good, high profile events- some of which are moving from London into the Business Festival. So would you say Leicester a good place to do business in? The proof really is in the pudding as last year Leicester was the fastest growing economy in the UK. If you want an eclectic, focused, driven economy it is a phenomenal place to work and to invest in. It has huge amounts of 66 dluxe-magazine.co.uk
assets, and the breadth and diversity of that is actually one of its selling points. It’s hugely culturally diverse, commerce is booming, the location is fantastic and it’s got everything that you would want out of a major city in the UK. But also, it’s somewhere that is friendly and is small enough that the people who live/work/play here, are able to do that in a comfortable way. It’s a great place to invest and it’s a great place to do business.
What are you most proud of with the Business Festival? I think it is the amount of support we have received from the local business community. It is now seen as a flagship event not only in the region, but in other areas of the UK - particularly in the inward investment, public sector realms, and I think that from those early conversations about, how could this work, to now seeing it being delivered at such a high level, is something we should all be proud of.
What can people expect from this year’s Business Festival? We’re capping the number of events this year at 150 and the type and styles of events coming through are hugely representational of the current issues that businesses face, the political positioning, and the advancement of the area. The reach of the festival has continued to increase, so our national and international platform will increase, so there is ever more reason to get involved. And how can they get involved? People can get involved in a number of different ways. We want people to put on events and shout about what they’re doing, but more specifically we want them to shout about what they’re doing as part of driving the local region. We also want people to go to the events; the majority of them are free to attend and we really want people to engage, not only with the local business community but with outside visitors - don’t forget that 24% of attendees last year were from outside the county so there’s a huge amount of wide ranging business opportunities for attendees to take advantage of.
