ISSUE 09 WINTER 2013
WELCOME TO WINTER! After a wonderful summer the dark nights, strong winds and rain of autumn have come as a particular shock to the system. So it is with some trepidation that we look towards winter and whatever the elements may have in store for us.

Should the cold air bite and Jack Frost lay his wondrous white carpet across the county we’ve compiled some suitably warm yet stylish attire to layer up in; see our style pages starting on page 34 which includes a special feature from Harvey Nichols on this season’s key colour trend: pink! If, like us, you relish racing around in the fresh air why not make use of the quieter winter months and nip across to New York for a spot of retail therapy with a big dose of culture thrown in. dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL’s Kevin Urquhart flew direct to the Big Apple from Birmingham International Airport, read his insider tips on how to make the most of your trip to this amazing city on page 44. As I write this, the dluxe office is in floods of tears after watching a sneaky peek of the new John Lewis Christmas advert. Our annual gift guide starts on page 24. But this year the Christmas story is perhaps more relevant than it has ever been. A young, homeless couple, forced to rely on the kindness of others at the time of their greatest need. This Christmas many families will be struggling to feed themselves let alone buy gifts so, in the true spirit of the season, dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL is supporting The Trussell Trust, an organisation that helps people in poverty and those experiencing difficult times. The trust is asking for help to ensure sufficient food stocks are in place at their food banks this Christmas. All food donations, however small, would be very much appreciated. Simply visit www. trusselltrust.org to find your local centre and help make a difference to a family this Christmas. Their shopping list is far from extravagant and many of us will have multiples in our store cupboard: Pasta, Rice & Soups, Tinned Fruit, Tinned Meat, Long Life Milk, Sugar, Tea and Cereals. Donations of these basic items will make such a difference to those in need at all times of the year so why not add an extra tin or two to your weekly shopping as a New Year’s Resolution that can really make a difference. Like us, we hope you can get involved and help spread some Festive cheer to those who need some help. Have a wonderful winter, and we’ll see you in spring.

UCKS DAY
For foodies who enjoy their traditions with a contemporary twist, the award winning Oak Room Restaurant at the stunning 17th Century Nailcote Hall near Solihull is a must-visit location this winter. Chef Daniel Topa has built on the Berkswell venue’s exceptional reputation for fine dining and crafted a menu that, although thoroughly modern, tips its hat at the traditional building in which it resides. Dishes like Turbot with Samphire, Quinoa, Capers and Grape Tomatoes and Quail with Sweetcorn Pannacotta are served amidst the atmospheric dining room which features original oak beams, traditional tartan carpets and dark wood furniture. With the flicker of candlelight reflected in the many mirrors it is easy to see why Nailcote Hall has been termed ‘one of the most romantic hotels in England’ by the AA and the Oak Room is certainly the place for a special occasion meal (Hint: don’t forget Valentine’s Day). Dining in The Oak Room need not be reserved just for special occasions, however, as a great value Menu of the Month is available offering 2 courses for just £26.50 or 3 for £29.50. Alternatively, why not enjoy a special Sunday lunch with 2 to 4 course options starting at just £21.50. Visit www.nailcotehall.co.uk for up to date offers or call 02476 466174

GRAND CENTRAL TAKES SHAPE As the shape of Grand Central starts to make its mark on the Birmingham city skyline, restaurants and cafés are lining up to make their debut in the city with 80% of floor space in the shopping centre already being signed for or under offer. Stores coming to Grand Central include John Lewis, The White Company, L’Occitane and Kiehls. Whilst there was a possibility that Grand Central may have opened for Christmas 2014, further clarity on the construction programme means that both the new shopping destination and the stunning rejuvenated station will actually open in 2015. Project partners, Birmingham City Council and Network Rail, settled on the revised opening date as it was decided that opening the shopping alongside the completed station concourse would provide a better customer experience for the whole development. Grand Central is set to further bolster Birmingham’s already strong reputation as a foodie’s delight by bringing new restaurants to the city, many of which are currently only found in London or the south east. Already confirmed are Pho, a Vietnamese Street Food restaurant; Spanish specialist Tapas Revolution, luxurious Italian restaurant Caffe Concerto; Tortilla, the home of tacos and burritos; the wonderfully named Crepe Affaire, who specialise in both sweet and savoury versions of the classic French offering and Giraffe, who serve up wonderful food from around the globe. www.grandcentralbirmingham.com www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk

ORIENTAL FUSION IN THE HEART OF THE CITY If the change in the seasons has left you pining for far-away, exotic places, look no further than Hou-Mei for a real taste of Asia. Literally translated, Hou-Mei means ‘good taste’ and the restaurant, based within Genting Casino in the heart of Chinatown, showcases the very latest in contemporary Asian cuisine. Whilst the restaurant specialises in authentic Chinese cuisine, you’ll be able to sample fare from across South East Asia, with dishes from Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam all putting in appearances on the menu. With the fresh fish market just around the corner, sea-foodies are spoilt for choice and we would highly recommend the lobster layered on a bed of crispy noodles with spring onion and ginger, or salt and chilli squid. Of course truly authentic dishes such as minced pork congee with preserved egg are not to everyone’s taste and the ‘English style’ Chinese is one of the keystones of the British diet. Those less comfortable with change will still be able to bag a sumptuous three-course feast with old favourites such as sweet and sour chicken and beef in black pepper sauce sitting alongside the more extravagant dishes. Intrepid explorers of gastonomy will relish the recent addition of a Steamboat and Dim-Sum menu, of which the fish tofu bun and Siu Mai dumplings are proving the preferred choice of restaurant regulars. Their new sushi menu is also hot of the press and we can confirm the very simple salmon and soy sauce is, in one word: divine! To top the night off, you can always release your inner Whitney or MJ in the karaoke bar or, being based in a casino, have a little flutter on the tables. Genting Chinatown was the first of its kind to offer Genting’s Instant Baccarat Bonus – a progressive Baccarat that gives customers the opportunity to win a jackpot of up to £70,000 or more for achieving consecutive banks – and of course, there’s all the traditional games you’d expect, such as Roulette, Blackjack, Slot Machines as well as Mah-jong. Drawing on their rich heritage from their Malaysian parent company, Genting Casino Chinatown promises to leave you feeling totally immersed in a fusion of Asia. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! Genting Casino Chinatown is @ 16/18 Hurst Street, Birmingham, B5 4BN. Tel: 0121 622 3313. For more information visit: www.gentingchinatown.com/birmingham

GHOST Fresh from the West End, the smash-hit musical Ghost is set to be this winter’s must see show when it comes to Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre. dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL caught up with leading man and local lad Stewart Clarke to find out how hard it is starring in the adaption of a film which has become such a big part of popular culture, and what it’s like performing to a home crowd.
“I’ve got to go back to work tomorrow so I’m having a chill day” says Stewart, the handsome 22 year old that landed the dream role of Sam Wheat, played by Patrick Swayze in the hit movie. “My agent put me up for the audition in November last year whilst I was in the show Looserville and unusually, there weren’t that many rounds so I found out that I’d got the part at the start of the New Year. It was perfect timing as Looserville was actually finishing its run at the end of January.” The instability of an acting career is well known, so for a young actor to go from one major production straight into another is almost unheard of “It’s a bit of mystery what you’ll end up doing next which is both terrifying and exciting at the same time. I guess the unpredictability of the business is one of the things that attracted me to it.”
seen the film. I am culturally aware of it though, I mean you can’t avoid the parodies of things like the pottery scene. Even if you haven’t seen the film there are elements of it that have become ingrained upon us and by doing the show you become very much aware of its impact.”
Born in Worcester and raised in Solihull, Stewart was something of a late starter when it came to catching the acting bug. “It wasn’t until sixth form, when they needed some lads for a school musical, that I first got really involved in theatre. I just thought why not give it a try and ended up getting the lead role and just loved it. From there I carried on acting whilst at Warwick University and that’s when I realised that I would really love to do this as a living. I did a lot work with the National Youth Music Theatre company and The Company Music Theatre in Manchester and both of them were fundamental in developing my interest and my skills.”
“Well, spoiler alert, I do die” says Stewart laughing, “but I guess you know that and it happens pretty early on. Basically the show is about this lovely couple, Sam and Molly. Everything is great in their lives, they’re just moving into a new place and it’s all pretty much perfect. The only slight fly in the ointment is that Sam just can’t say I Love You; he has all of these insecurities about committing, almost as if he fears that by saying those words it will make him lose what he has, he’ll jinx it. One day Sam gets mugged and is killed. From there the show follows Sam as a ghost as he adapts and as he tries to warn Molly about the danger that she finds herself in. He stumbles upon a phoney psychic for help, the wonderfully funny Oda Mae, who actually finds out that she does have powers and is able to speak to Sam and help him to protect Molly.”
When I ask Stewart how on earth you go about playing a role made so famous by Patrick Swayze in the film he makes a shocking confession to me, “umm, I haven’t actually
So for those of us, like Stewart, who are or were unaware of the show’s plot, what do we have to look forward to. Based on the phenomenal Oscar-winning movie that captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation back in the 90s, Ghost is a timeless fantasy about the power of love. “The wonderful message of the show is that love lives on. You take it with you which is really beautiful and very comforting for a lot of people.”
www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Adapted for the stage by Bruce Joel Rubin from his own Oscar-winning screenplay for the film, the show follows the same general plot but as Stewart states, it’s not a carbon copy of the film it’s based on “It is so different in terms of how people are playing their parts and the style of performances, it’s a completely different beast, probably because most of us found it helpful not to watch the film, we needed to escape the film to create our own versions of these characters. I think we’ll all watch it when we’ve finished and be like ah I know that scene and oh they’re doing it like that, but not while the tour is going on I don’t think.” The amazing special effects and dazzling staging are by the multi award-winning Paul Kieve and Tony Award-winner Matthew Warchus and have been described as ‘Jawdroppingly amazing’ “It’s such a physical role” says Stewart “It is so demanding in terms of just how much you need to give every night of the week, but that comes with its own rewards; what you put in you get out in terms of audience reaction. For example, the final scene between Molly and Sam, where you get that cathartic moment when they get to see each other again; it makes it all worth it. The audience are right there with you, you can really feel them. It’s such a special moment; every night for me it has the same impact. It’s really beautiful.” With a score by rock legends and Grammy award winners, Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard and including the unforgettable Unchained Melody, Ghost boasts an amazing soundtrack. “Oda Mae has a cracking disco number called
There’s something there that everyone can identify with, no matter who you are
‘I’m Outta Here’, which is really explosive with a big ensemble and is just great fun. Then, at the end of Act One, I have a great song – ‘I Had a Life’, where Sam, Molly and Carl are all singing together and all of their own stories intertwine; that’s a real highlight for me.” Perhaps one of the stand out moments of the show though is a song called ‘Three Little Words’ sung by Sam and Molly at the start of the show. “When it gets a reprise, later on, it becomes absolutely heart wrenching” laughs Stewart, advising us to pack our tissues because there won’t be a dry eye in the house.
Ghost really is an emotional rollercoaster ride of romance and comedy “It really does have something for everyone” says Stewart animatedly, “ it’s got some action, some really raw emotion, some great laughs and some amazing songs. There’s something there that everyone can identify with, no matter who you are.” So will the emotions be running even higher as Stewart returns to his home turf of the West Midlands and performs in front of family and friends? “Oh no it’s all good” he laughs, “there are a lot of people who have www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk

dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL caught up with Alasdair Dunne, Partner in Fisher German Estate Agents and Chartered Surveyors, who believes the catalyst for this demand can be traced back to March/April of this year and the launch of Help to Buy. “Arguably, the housing market was likely to start improving anyway, in line with greater confidence in the economy, but clearly Help to Buy has accelerated the process. If it was George Osbourne’s plan to stoke a preelection house price boom, then the scheme is timely. Infact, Nationwide Building Society has showed all 13 UK regions have experienced annual house price growth in the third quarter, with the average property now rising in price by 5% per year.”

3. STOCKINGS 12.
Briefly, the Help to Buy scheme provides an interest-free loan of 20% of the purchase price of a newley built property for five years and is funded by taxpayers. Buyers still need a 5% deposit, but this additional loan enables them to buy a property they couldn’t otherwise afford. The buyer’s mortgage provider grants a mortgage on the remaining 75% of the value and after five years, the home owner has to pay interest on the outstanding 20% at a reduced rate. “In addition to stimulating housing demand and pushing up prices, the scheme would appear to be having a major impact on housebuilding. In September 2013 it was reported that housebuilding activity rose at its fastest pace since November 2003 and it is anticipated that housebuilding could increase by more than 30% by 2015. This is certainly true across the whole of the Midlands as we see an increase in new homes being built at all levels in the region.” So they year seems to be drawing to a close on a positive note; the builders are building, house buyers are buying, the economy is clawing its way out of a recession and the property market is responding well. f your idea of decorating the house at Christmas consists of unpacking the same threadbare tree, dusty baubles and tinsel that’s seen better days, it might be wor th taking a look at the new Next Home collections for the festive season. Traditionalists who like reds and greens in their Christmassy colour palette will love the Highland Fling collection. Checks and jacquard patterns are intertwined with conversational prints and quirky quotes. Fabric decorations and rustic packaged gift sets add homespun elements, whilst willow stags and woodland animals appear throughout. If you’re looking for a more vintage, opulent and feminine feel to your decor, Christmas Romance could be the story for you. It perfectly captures the festive magic with mercury glass decorations and jewel-encrusted textiles. Add in a touch of faux fur and quilted velvet alongside elaborate candelabras and mirrored candle plates for a sense of faded grandeur. So, whether you’re looking for something traditional and homely or simple and stylish, you’ll find it at Next this Christmas.

POST-PARTY PICK-ME-UP

John Paul McGuirk, from Harvey Nichols, offers advice on skin rescue remedies to get you through the party season and beyond. The run-up to Christmas and New Year is one long list of parties – indulgence and then some. GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT
Just add water
(and some greens)
Right up there with the meaning of life is another question: what is the key to healthy living? The Midland’s very own Hannah Patterson thinks she may well have cracked it and apparently, the answer could be as simple as ‘Just add water’! Hannah, who is a certified Bikram Yoga instructor as well as a TV presenter, is hoping to transform people’s health and well being by pioneering an innovative two-week detox with a difference.
Rather than taking anything away, Hannah’s detox programme aims to hydrate and improve the nutrition of participants by adding three key elements to their diet – water, green juice and a little bit of ‘me time’. After two years of studying nutrition, Hannah has come up with a simple plan that isn’t too overwhelming, designed to refresh and recharge your body without the hassle of a diet.
Hannah’s Green Juice Recipe:
HEALTH
Cucumber (half) Celery (2-3 sticks) Beansprouts (handful) Lemon (quarter) or lime (half) Mint (lots) Ginger (thumb)
Juice all the ingredients together and pour over ice.
The Detox:
Week One: Hydration Meditation
Work Out Whilst You Work!
Each day when you wake up, sit (no lying down) for one minute in silence with your eyes closed concentrating on your breathing. Spend 5-10 minutes before 8am reading from an inspirational book of your choice Drink a glass of water every two hours between 8am and 8pm. Water is the key to feeling more energised, less hungry and generally healthier.
In total, the programme involves 49 extra glasses of water, seven green juices, 14 minutes of silence and 140 minutes of positive reading. And that’s not a lot to ask for when the rewards are a cleansed mind, body and soul, so go ahead and give your body a break; you’ve earned it! For further info and to tell Hannah how you got on go to www.makeithealthy.co.uk
Over the next few months Office Fitness will be releasing software to accompany their product range, providing desktop reminders to exercise along with activity recording and goal setting. Future plans include WorkFit Live – a link up with Personal Trainers that allows you to exercise in bite size chunks throughout the day, all at your desk. Check out the full range on their website! www.officefitness.co.uk
You Know
Start your mornings as you did in week one, focusing on breathing and reading; then have a glass of filtered or bottled water before juicing yourself a glass of green goodness. Green juice helps to keep your insides clean, your digestive system happy and your body functioning well.
It’s no secret that obesity has hit epidemic proportions and no one needs to be reminded for the hundredth time that we should be “more active, more often”. With growing numbers of us dining al desco when midday commeth, why not bring exercise into the office as well? 12 million of us spend a third of the week there, which makes it a great opportunity to kill two pesky birds with one stone.
UK company Office Fitness has recently released a range of office-based exercise equipment ranging from mini bikes and walking treadmills to anti-roll dumbbells and resistance bands, all with the aim of moulding a nation of healthier, more energised and more productive workers.

Excuses, Excuses
A nationwide survey commissioned by High Intensity Interval Training fitness system tabata has revealed that three quarters of UK women want to get fitter, but the main reason for not exercising was down to lack of time. The same survey went on to uncover that 60% of the women polled spend up to an hour texting every day!

Keep the Christmas bulge at bay… Nathan D’Rozario, gym manager at theclubandspa in Birmingham, regularly sees people work hard in the lead up to December in order to look and feel great in their LBDs and DJs, only to pile the pounds straight back on by over-indulging during the festive period. Trimming down those Christmas calories can help to keep the festive flab away and is actually surprisingly easy. “Keeping fit is all about staying consistent. This not only applies to what you are eating, but also to your exercise routine. Giving up, even for just a few weeks will only make it harder to get back into the swing of things come the New Year. You could always book in for some personal training sessions to help you maintain your motivation and reach your goals” Nathan is no slave driver though, and is keen to point out that it’s still possible to enjoy the Christmas period without going over the top; “I spoke to Rob Pritchett, head chef at Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse, Bar & Grill to find out if there
were any easy ways to reduce Christmas calorie intake without upsetting your taste buds and was amazed to discover that if you Braise rather than roast your Christmas turkey, and if you swap your goose fat roasted potatoes for grilled sweet potatoes, you could save 297 calories and a massive 10.2g of fat – perfect for keeping those calories under control without compromising on taste.” For those who enjoy their Christmas tipple, Rodizio Rico in The Cube have created a festive cocktail that is both refreshing and healthy. Perfect for Christmas parties, the Watermelon Gin Fizz contains only 153 calories and is a great substitute for the sugar-filled mulled wines and creamy cocktails that pop up at Christmas.
FRIGHTENING FACT!
The average person gobbles 7,000 calories on Christmas Day. The recommended daily consumption is no more than 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men!
So whilst there is no reason to feel guilty about enjoying yourself during the festive season, it’s worth remembering that, on average, people gain between 1 and 5 lbs (2kg) over the Christmas period – definitely an unwanted Christmas gift! Try following some of the tips above to help to banish the blubber this winter and keep you looking great all year round!

It’s Up To You, New Year, New York! January can be a bleak month with little to look forward to.With the weather howling a gale outside the temptation to batten down the hatches and hibernate until spring can be overwhelming. So why not escape the post-festive funk and plan a trip to New York? Low season rates means there are a multitude of deals to be had on flights and hotels, so why not make New York your New Year resolution asks Kevin Urquhart.
A
nd what better way to make use of the low season pricing than to treat yourself to the ‘turn left’ Business First experience on United Airlines. A combination of flat bed seats, 61-strong personal film selection, a chef-prepared, three course meal and unlimited champers, it’s safe to say we arrived in the Big Apple in style.
eyed will have seen on the screens of Sex & The City. Remember the episode where the foursome attended the opening night of ‘Raw’, the sushi restaurant? That’s actually in Brooklyn and is called Sea. No visit to Brooklyn is complete without stopping by as the Thai food was easily the best we’ve ever tasted. And they do some incredible cocktails, too. Fab-ulous!
Whether a New York newbie or a seasoned traveller, the sheer scale of New York remains breathtaking. But let’s get our facts right first. When we say New York, what we really mean is Manhattan for New York comprises several distinct districts: Queens, Brooklyn, New Jersey and, of course, Manhattan. All of which have their very own personality and flavour.
www.seathainyc.com That said, the Manhattan grid, which covers almost the entirety of Manhattan is more than enough to sate your Big Apple appetite.
Most New York virgins stay within the grid of Manhattan, you could spend a lifetime here and never truly master the city, but for frequent visitors or native New Yorkers, a quick ferry ride across the East River to Brooklyn is a feast for the senses. The ferry crossing takes around 40 minutes (or the more athletic can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge). Work out your arrival point on the facing banks of Brooklyn as there are four – the fourth in the shadows of the Bridge itself. If you want to immerse yourself in supercool street culture, not unlike the Shoreditch area of London, go for the second stop. The ferry gives you a unique opportunity to see Manhattan from the water, unobstructed and the views of the Lower East Side are to die for, with the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings towering above the city. Dominating the skyline as you make your way along the river, Ground Zero emerges, defiant and uncompromising. It’s a seriously good photo opportunity. Brooklyn by contrast is smaller, less high rise than NYC but chic to the max. Trendy boutiques and artist studios rub shoulders with avant garde eateries that the eagle-
or Uptown. The grid does stop at 8th Street though. Below this, you’re in China Town, Little Italy, Nolita and SoHo with its more traditional Street names. It’s down here that you’ll find the National September 11 Memorial (aka Ground Zero) and Century 21 Talking of which, the third rule is to have a plan. Prebooking is essential for some attractions, so don’t leave it until you’re there or you may face disappointment.
THE FACTS...
THE RULES TO EXPLORING NYC
Birmingham Airport currently serves 143 direct scheduled & charter routes and offers an additional 279 possible connections worldwide. This gives passengers a choice of 422 direct or one-stop flights.
Getting the most out of your New York vacation will be as much about pre-planning as it is about getting your bearings when you’re there. First rule, get a map. Most hotels have these, or look out for one of the many NYC&Co Tourism offices, which are a wealth of information. Get yourself one of their City Passes, as this not only acts as a pre-paid admission to many of the top attractions (also saving you money), but also fast-tracks you in the queues, too making it a great investment on both counts.
United Airlines fly six times weekly to Newark Liberty International Airport from Birmingham Airport (BHX). Find out more at www. birminghamairport.co.uk or on Twitter at bhx_official
www.citypass.com Second rule is know your North from your South and your East from West, or you’re going to struggle. Manhattan runs east to west in Avenues, south to north in Streets and once you’ve cracked it, you’ll start to feel like a pro. A good rule of thumb is that if you can see the Ground Zero Building, you’re facing South or Downtown. Conversely, the Empire State is North, www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
United Airlines operates direct services from Birmingham to its hub in New York/Newark, with onward connections to more than 300 cities throughout the Americas. Fares in economy from Birmingham to New York/Newark start from £453.01 including taxes. The lead-in fare for Business First is £1,509.01, tax included. Whilst you’re down here, check out Bleeker Street which is boutique heaven for designer favourites such as Jimmy Choo, Marc Jacobs, Lulu Guinness, Mulbery, Michael Kors as well as sample sale pop-up stores.
TIMES SQUARE, BROADWAY AND 42ND STREET
For the ultimate neon experience, go at nightfall. You can almost taste the excitement of Theatreland in the air. Whether Shakespeare at the historic Richard Rodgers Theatre (West 46th Street) or something altogether more musical, a trip to theatreland is a nobrainer. www.playbill.com

NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL.
You cannot visit New York without a visit to the Ground Zero site. I visited the site a few years back and it had retained an indelible sadness and stillness, but that’s gone. The site is now a beacon of hope, rebirth and defiance. The new World Trade Center, although unfinished, is already the city’s highest building thrusting into the sky once more. www.911memorial.org
If you want a 360-degree view of Manhattan and don’t suffer from vertigo, this is your mecca. The vista is breathtaking, quite literally. Open until Midnight, our tip is to go late at night as the queues are almost nonexistent and the twinkly lights of the city are just magical. www.esbnyc.com

THE BOATHOUSE IN CENTRAL PARK
The recently refurbished Hotel Beacon is a fantastic base from which to explore the city. On Broadway at 75th Street, the Hotel Beacon is located in the wealthy Upper West Side, close to Central Park and the Dakota (where John Lennon was shot). We loved many things about the hotel, especially the luxe-suites. The self-catering, two bedroom suite is $550 per night low season (Jan and Feb), so can work out exceptionally cost-effective if you don’t mind sharing the apartment-style suite with friends or family. www.beaconhotel.com
WORLD YACHT’S HUDSON RIVER BOAT CRUISE
CENTURY 21
Literally a hop, skip and a jump from the Ground Zero site, this is an absolute must for any doyenne of fashion, as it’s designer clobber central, but at heavily discounted prices. Don’t think this is a TK-Maxx-esque rummage experience, though: think Selfridges on a Shoestring. www.c21stores.com
It was almost a mistake booking our dinner reservation for the first night. Jet-lagged (despite flying Business Class with United), we could not do this incredible restaurant justice. Sure, the service was borderline laissez-faire, but the food was second to none. www.thecentralparkboathouse.com

As if you need an excuse to don your finest, this cruise around Manhattan begins from Pier 81 aboard World Yacht’s Duchess and is, quite simply, unmissable. Setting sail at dusk, this threehour voyage literally takes you in a circle around Manhattan island affording you views even money can’t buy. To see the city as it shifts and changes from dusk to dark is both humbling and beautiful, whatever the season. A tasty three course dinner is served throughout the trip, as part of your ticket price. www.worldyacht.com

Organising a large wedding can sometimes be fraught with family politics. There’s always one great aunt who refuses point blank to be in the same room as your third cousin twice removed,so some couples could be excused for exploring options further afield when it comes to tying the knot. With the help of the experts at destination wedding website MarryAbroad.co.uk, we’ve brought you our top five beaches worldwide on which to say ‘I do’.

Le Morne Peninsula
Sønderborg beach
Located in the middle of mountains in the Austrian Alps why not say your vows overlooking the wonderfully crystal clear Lake Zell? The magical beach is perfect for an alpine celebration and couples can hire a special ship, the MS Schmittenhöhe for a unique reception.
Perfection personified for 12 months of the year, in summer the lake projects a turquoise hue, due to pure water running in from surrounding glaciers, whilst in winter, when the water is frozen over, horses can pull newlyweds on sleighs across the lake.
Situated between two major oceans at the tip of South Africa, Grootbos Beach is part of a private reserve and is known as the best land-based whale watching site in the world, so you might even spot a humpback as you get hitched!
With Le Morne mountain as a stunning backdrop, this beach on the south west of the island is simply magnificent. Miles of turquoise sea and soft white sand make it a true paradise wedding location and situated on a private tropical coastline, couples can be assured of very few onlookers.
Located in the Soenderborg Municipality of South Jutland in Denmark, Sønderborg beach is a unique wedding spot, offering views of a grand castle. Known as the Las Vegas of Europe due to its simple wedding legalities, Denmark is favoured by couples wanting to wed abroad without too much paperwork.

Changing Traditions PERSONALISED BEER COOLER OR WINE STOPPER
Making your big day stand out from all the rest can be tricky; nobody likes to copy from friends and bride envy can be a very unpleasant trait! Here are our top tips on how to make your day as individual as you are.
Make a favour practical and guests are more likely to keep it. Make them alcohol related and you’re onto a surefire winner! Cold beer and crisp wine are two of life’s prerequisites, so give your guests a gift they can use and they’re guaranteed to remember your big day for years to come.
CHARITY FAVOUR PACKS Donating to charity is a great way to thank your guests for celebrating your wedding with you. Most favours will come with a pin of your choice and can also double up as place cards. Breast Cancer Care is pictured, but all major charities will offer their own variation.
LOTTERY TICKET HOLDERS
We all know that nothing causes more drama at a wedding than the traditional bouquet toss. If you want to avoid your bridesmaids scrumming down before the disco, why not skip tradition and present your bridal bouquet to the couple married the longest. It’s a lovely, romantic gesture that’s sure to bring a tear to their eye.
We all love to scour over old photographs so why not ask married guests to send a copy of their own wedding photograph and incorporate them into your reception’s table numbers. The table number could equal the number of years they have been married. It may lead to some pretty random numbers but it’s a great way to make your wedding unique and celebrate their happily ever after.
Feeling lucky in love? Lottery tickets are a fantastic idea for an alternative favour and look great in easily personalised holders made of card. Just make sure you lay the ground rules about a finder’s fee on any potential jackpot wins… www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Finding different ways to remember your big day is key. Why not hire a Silhouette artist or old fashioned Photobooth to record your celebration alongside your main wedding photographer? Not only does an artist entertain your guests but they are left with a charming wedding favour as a keepsake of the day. Photobooths represent a great way to inject some hi jinx into your reception- just keep the groomsmen away from it after a few drinks!
Tuck handwritten notes into your guest’s napkins to make your wedding more personal. You could share a favourite memory, list an inside joke, display an old photograph of you both or simply describe what they mean to you. This is guaranteed to encourage some smiles.
Everybody’s been to a wedding where the DJ plays the generic ‘classic songs’. On your wedding invites why not ask guests to list their favourite songs ready for your DJ to play? It’s sure to create a truly unique event and ensure that everyone is up and dancing all night long!

DINING L
ooks like we will be spoilt for choice this Christmas, with the city’s restaurateurs ramping up their offering to give us a magical and tasty Christmas writes dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL’S resident foodie Anita Champaneri.
Birmingham has finally been bestowed with a fourth Michelin star with newcomer to the city Adam Stokes and his eponymous restaurant Adam’s receiving the news last month. Birmingham culinary lovers have been buzzing ever since. Adam’s pop up restaurant has only been in the city six months and with Michelin greatness thrust upon it, Birmingham is now the city with the most Michelin starred restaurants outside London. - www.msdeliciouspr.blogspot.com
LOVES IS LOVED As the song goes, it really does seem like Love Is a Splendid Thing. The National Restaurant Awards recently took place and Loves Restaurant has once again been voted in the list for the Top 100 Restaurants in the UK, coming in at 67th place. Not only were they amongst only 25 restaurants to feature outside of London, but they were also the highest rated restaurant in Birmingham with Purnell’s coming in close at number 75. Loves were also listed in The Times newspaper in Britain’s Top 10 most romantic restaurants. The award rounds off a great year for Loves with Chef Patron Steve Love being awarded a Master of Culinary Arts at a very glam affair at Claridge’s. Steve is now only 1 of 2 people in the whole of Britain to gain the culinary hat trick of National Chef of the Year for Great Britain, the Roux Scholarship and the Master of Culinary Arts. PARLOUR FARE Thursday night at Bullring can be manic with crazed Christmas shoppers hot footing it around the centre maxing out the credit cards and adding some magic and sparkle to their loved ones Yuletide gifts . All the shops are adorned with glitz and gold ribbon and feature pretty boxes stacked as high as their price tags. I always think it’s best to take an enforced break to avoid you looking like a shopping zombie! One such trip led us to take a break at Rossopomodoro, the Italian eatery in Selfridges Food Hall. I hadn’t realised, but this was much more than an Italian pizza parlour. It lives and breathes the spirit of Napoli. With all the produce is shipped from Napoli and so are all the staff. After embarrassing ourselves trying to say everything in an Italian accent and searching out a wheat free pasta alternative for my companion, we settled on our starters. I opted for the calamari with fried courgettes; so different from the French equivalent. The calamari was meaty and the courgette batons were long and crispy and were big for a starter portion. My friend had some great sounding Cheeses from Campania: black Auricchio provolone, pecorino and buffalo caciottella – served with a cherry tomato jam. My main was the fusilli pasta with buffalo ricotta cheese, Neapolitan pork sausage and ‘friarielli’ (Neapolitan broccoli which was very salty), served with pecorino cheese (£12.45). It looked like a small portion but I actually couldn’t finish it. Rossopomodoro make the pizzas exactly as they do in Naples, in traditional wood burning ovens using ingredients sourced only in the area immediately around Naples. The menu says their chefs add the touches of genuine Neapolitan character that give the pizza its distinctive personality – an authentic slice of Naples. My guest enjoyed the intriguingly named Fru Fru (£13.95), an oval shaped three season pizza: buffalo ricotta cheese and Neapolitan salami; tomato sauce and mozzarella; Parma ham, rocket and parmesan cheese shavings. This was a ‘threein-one’ pizza, ideal if you are an indecisive eater. Freshly made with fresh ingredients, it was worth the wait. It looked and tasted great. Dessert was light and fluffy tiramisu. The time-honoured classic is given an update with home-made coffee flavoured tiramisù with warm Nutella. The sponge soaked in just the right amount of alcohol with a nice head of cloud-like cream. A fab Italian dessert at a fab Italian eaterie! ROSSOPOMODORO is @ Selfridges Food Hall, Bullring. www.rossopomodoro.co.uk www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
A new addition to Moseley’s thriving dining and drinking scene is a quirky Victorian drinking and dining parlour.A drinking parlour?! What’s a drinking parlour? I thought it was a set left behind by the TV producers of Peaky Blinders. But, no, it’s a tired Victorian building known formerly as ‘The Village Inn’ which has been lovingly restored and reinvented as a cornucopia of comforts in the heart of Moseley. Guests can enjoy an eclectic Victoriana-inspired interior, including intimate booths, squidgy sofas, a welcoming bar and roaring fires. Chef,Tom Ebbon, has been busy developing the seasonal menu, from Sticky Sausage Platters to Speciality Pie and Mash. The Village will be open 7 days a week for fresh homemade breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch; the menu also includes cakes, craft beers, local ales and gin-inspired cocktails. LAZY Days... WHEN WINTER’S CHILL CREEPS AROUND US WE TEND TO BECOME AS TIRED AS TABBY CATS, LOSE ALL MOTIVATION AND VIEW HIBERNATION AS AN ACTIVITY PLAN. THE IDEA OF LONG, LEISURELY DAYS, TAKING OUR TIME OVER LIFE’S LITTLE PLEASURES IS INCREDIBLY APPEALING, SO WHEN WE HEARD THAT BIRMINGHAM’S HYATT REGENCY WERE OFFERING SUNDAY DINERS A DECADENT NEW BRUNCH MENU WE DIDN’T SO MUCH LEAP TO OUR FEET AS SLOWLY SHUFFLE OFF OUR SLIPPERS, BEFORE STRETCHING AND CALLING FRIENDS FOR AN IMPROMPTU AFTERNOON OF DRINKING, DINING AND ABOVE ALL, RELAXING. Arriving at the landmark location, just off Broad Street, we make use of the Hyatt Regency’s valet service before meeting our friends in the hotel’s atrium style restaurant. A pianist plays gently on the grand piano at the side of the restaurant and whilst waiting for a glass of champagne well it is Sunday - we take a sneaky peek at the restaurant’s other diners. It’s a real mixture: couples, families of different generations and groups of friends. Everyone is dressed differently, some formal, some casual but that’s the USP of brunch at the Hyatt Regency- you can make it anything you want it to be. The first stage of brunch is a tour of the cold buffet, plate in hand of course. Here we chose from a wonderful selection of salads, quality cheeses, charcuterie and seafood platters. You can keep visiting the buffet as many times as you like and it is definitely worth a second trip, maybe even a third! There’s no pressure to rush through your courses so sit back, relax and enjoy the company and the ambiance. Subtly moving my belt along by
one notch, it was time to select my main course: roast beef with all the trimmings of course! The carvery style set up features three different meats, a whole salted salmon, a warming shepherd’s pie and a rich vegetable lasagne for the non-meat eaters. The carving was generous and diners help themselves to side dishes including incredibly crunchy roast potatoes- perfect! Another notch and another course, all accompanied by some seriously good wine. Most choices on the wine list are available by the glass so your palette need not suffer if you’re dining partners are better behaved than you. Luckily mine weren’t, so we enjoyed a rest from eating and caught up on some drinking before making our way over to the desserts. No matter how sweet a tooth you may have it is sure to be satisfied at the Hyatt Regency. Gateaux, cheesecakes, trifles and crumbles abound and are all served with the sugary accoutrements of custards, ices and creams. For those with a more savoury palette a fine selection
of cheeses await to be enjoyed with perhaps just another glass of wine. As the darkness of night greeted the afternoon our coffees were served and my belt gave up. A truly civilised afternoon of fine food and good company left us ready to return to our sofas fully sated for a well-earned Sunday snooze.
Brunch at the Hyatt Regency costs a very reasonable £28.50 for three unlimited courses, and is served on sundays from 12:30 til 3. To find out more or to book your table visit www. birmingham.regency.hyatt.com or call 0121 643 1234 Hyatt Regency is @ 2 Bridge Street, Birmingham, England, B1 2JZ

WHETHER YOU’RE ORGANISING A CHRISTMAS PARTY FOR ALL YOUR HARD-WORKING COLLEAGUES, A NIGHT OUT WITH YOUR CROWD OF FRIENDS, OR THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU’LL BE BRINGING IN 2014, PUT A LITTLE GLITZ AND GLAMOUR INTO THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH A NIGHT AT HOTEL LA TOUR. The hotel’s Aalto Restaurant will be serving festive lunches and dinners throughout December. Choose from two or three courses according to the time of day and your appetite. Chef Dan Pearce has crafted a menu with some favourite festive ingredients and, in line with the restaurant’s signature twist, is putting a modern spin on dishes such as smoked salmon, which is served with pickled cucumber, saffron and lime dressing or a Mediterranean vegetable terrine with basil, sun dried tomato and toasted pumpkin seeds. Dan explains: “We have found some wonderful Warwickshire turkey which, as you would expect, will be presented with all the usual trimmings – we’re also including some great Tamworth sausage too. There’s also a wild mushroom and roasted pumpkin with sage and chestnut in a crumble, which works perfectly with roasted parsnips which, for me, really are the flavour of Christmas.” Sweet tooth? You won’t be disappointed as Pastry Chef Rachel Dorrell has a Christmas toffee and date pudding served with a whipped rum butter and, if chocolate is your thing, there is a to-die-for milk chocolate torte with white chocolate fudge and clementine syrup. For those with a taste for all things cheesey you’ll be keen to know that the team have sourced some regionally-produced soft ash and sage cheddar, perfectly paired with a winter chutney. Tempted? We are! And let’s not forget the La Tour Christmas cake which is served with coffee to round off your perfect meal. A similar menu is available for parties held on the hotel’s impressive events floor, The Auden Rooms, which is a great space for large groups, private parties or for smaller groups to join together with others on party nights, taking place on Friday and Saturday nights throughout December. With an increasing numbers of businesses working flat out throughout the Christmas period, the team at Hotel la Tour are are extending the celebrations with extra dates and discounts on party nights all the way into January. Conference and Events Manager Claire Smythe said: “Planning a January party can take a bit of the pressure off in the busy runup to Christmas and give employees something to look forward to in early 2014.” (Call her on 0121 718 8000 to discuss great value events in January.)
PUT A LITTLE SPARKLE INTO
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR Gather your besties together for the biggest night out of the year, see in the New Year, fall into a luxuriously comfy bed and meet up for breakfast the following morning. That’s sorted then! Why not celebrate New Year’s Eve at Hotel La Tour where you’ll be guaranteed an elegant occasion with great entertainment from singer Adam Chandler and a disco through midnight and beyond. As you’d expect there is a great menu (six courses) plus coffee and sweet treats from the Aalto Restaurant team and you’ll get the fun started over fizz with the Champagne reception, all for £85 per person.
Do something new this New Year If you’re drinking rather than dining, you can reserve a VIP area for your party at Alvar Bar for £20 per person, including nibbles, and there are special rates to stay over. Treat yourselves and make a real occasion of it.

Glynn Purnell Serves Up Special 10th Birthday Menu For Cure Leukaemia
366 Days of Kindness
17 – 21 December @ The REP In response to the riots of August 2011, Bernadette Russell committed to be kind to a stranger every single day for a whole year. This multi-media show tells the heartbreaking, surprising and challenging stories of that year, which began with burning buildings and ended with the flame of the Olympic torch. Part storytelling, part stand-up, part live documentary, featuring a dinner party with surprise guests including the Dalai Lama, Aristotle and Princess Diana, this show attempts to answer the question: is it possible to change the world just by being kind?
Award-winning Michelin starred chef, Glynn Purnell helped Cure Leukaemia mark its 10th birthday in fine culinary style by designing a unique menu for the gala dinner that was held at Aston Villa Football Club recently. Each dish gave a nod to some of the city’s biggest brands including Bird’s Custard, HP Sauce and Cadbury’s and was enjoyed by over 350 guests. The event, hosted by long-standing Cure Leukaemia supporter Adrian Chiles at Villa Park’s Holte Suite, was a starstudded affair with Ashes hero Jonathan Trott and England One-Day coach Ashley Giles in attendance. The party was to say thank you to all the supporters in the local community and business sector who have helped over the last 10 years. Ebeneezer Scrooge is the miser who, on the anniversary of the death of his business partner, is given the opportunity to alter his destiny after a series of ghostly visitations. Edgbaston Priory Club’s New Networking Initiative
23 January @ Symphony Hall To celebrate this year’s Ashes clashes, Britain’s most popular cricket commentators met live on stage for the first time, playing to packed houses around the country. The original odd couple amazed and enthralled both devotees of the game and non-cricket lovers alike with their stories, passion and quick-fire wit. So, fresh from their commentaries duties down under and by popular demand, Geoffrey Boycott and Jonathan Agnew return for a short series of shows in selected venues, and will be stopping in Birmingham as part of their tour! Whilst celebrity guests added to the entertainment, it was the Boycott and Agnew exchanges that audiences found enthralling, so don’t miss out!
Edgbaston Priory Club is one of the most prestigious racquet and leisure members’ clubs in the region and their business networking lunches continue to go from strength to strength. Their already vibrant social calendar was bolstered starting this autumn with the lunch events, which take place on first Wednesday of every month. Running from 12:30pm – 2:30pm, the networking events take place in the club’s state of the art function room and are a great opportunity to expand your book of contacts and maybe even appear in these pages! Mark Thomas: 100 Acts of Dissent 31 January – 1 February @ mac Birmingham
Mark Thomas is not just a comedian; he’s an activist, a journalist and a 50-year-old Dad. All of these elements are drawn upon and come together in his new show 100 Acts Of Minor Dissent that comes to mac Birmingham this winter. Mark is well versed in the art of creative mayhem and over the years his troublemaking has changed laws, cost companies millions and annoyed those who most deserved to be. What his new show does is give this mischievously bad behaviour a purpose as Mark sets himself the task of committing 100 Acts of Minor Dissent in the space of a year. Cataloguing everything from the smallest and silliest gesture to the grandest confrontations, the results are subversive, hilarious, mainly legal and occasionally inspiring.

A New Lifestyle For The Quarter The world famous School of Jewellery was the venue that played host to the first Quarter Lifestyle event, organised by the Jewellery Quarter BID in October. The evening event was used as a way to showcase the skill and diversity of the designers in the quarter that give the area such a broad retail offering. Fashion stylist and blogger Beth Goodrham was on hand to banish those ‘what shall I wear today?’ dilemmas with a variety of both smart and casual outfits. Through the use of accessories, Beth provided tips and ticks on how to transform each look, promoting the wealth of businesses on offer in the Jewellery Quarter in the process. The next Quarter Lifestyle Event will take place in spring, for more information head to www. jewelleryquarter.net

Midlands Fashion Awards winners announced Birmingham became the fashion capital for one evening in October when fashionistas and media converged at the Penthouse at the Loft Lounge to celebrate the Midlands’ fashion scene at a glitzy awards ceremony hosted by the glamorous ITV Presenter, Lucy Kite. The Midlands Fashion Awards, now in their fifth year, act as a platform for independent, emerging and young designers from across the region to showcase their collections and 2013 did not disappoint, with a spread worthy of London Fashion Week. The buzz of excitement for this anticipated event transformed a dreary day into a glamorous evening of high fashion as over 250 guests mingled before the show, enjoying the shopping from local independent retailers before taking their places for the main fashion event. The atmosphere was electric as the judges spoke in hushed voices before handing the results to Lucy who announced them to huge cheers. This classic tale of Parisian love and loss features many famous arias including Your Tiny Hand is Frozen and They Call Me Mimi. True to tradition, La Bohème will be staged with lavish sets and costumes and will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

RETAIL & LEISURE DESTINATION HITS THE NEC WITH RESORT WORLD BUSINESS EDITOR - CAROLINE SPENCE If you have seen building work rise over the NEC recently, you might wonder what the huge construction site is for. Work began on Resort World Birmingham, a multi-faceted retail, leisure and entertainments centre, in February this year. Things have been progressing rapidly as, even though the groundbreaking took place at the beginning of the year, buildings are now towering over the NEC’s site and the whole scheme is really taking shape. Resort World will bring an enhanced offer to the NEC exhibition centre and venues that are located just off the M42. Expect premium experiences in food & drink, accommodation, entertainment and retail, the intention being that Resort World will turn the NEC venue into a place to stay rather than just to visit for a conference or a concert. A high-end mall of 45 stores will be filled to the brim with premium brands making it the ultimate venue for a spot of retail therapy, whilst the four-star hotel will offer spa facilities to take you away from it all. At night, Resort World will boast a Genting casino offering the latest technology in gaming, an 11 screen cinema with digital light and sound equipment and a wide range of restaurants to cater for all tastes.
JLR LAUNCHES F-TYPE COUPE
The £150million centre will create 1750 specialist jobs during construction and a further 1100 employment opportunities on completion in 2015. Peter Brooks, President and Chief Operating Officer for Genting UK plc, commented; “This is an important day for Genting. We have spent several years working closely with the NEC Group and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to make Resorts World a reality. When it opens in 2015, it will bring an innovative and exciting new offer to the UK leisure market. Resorts World Birmingham is by far our most ambitious project to date – with a scale and budget to match.” Lord Green, Minister of State for Trade and Investment said; “The Government welcomes the news that work has begun on Resorts World Birmingham. This project, and the decision by Genting to invest £150m here in Birmingham and £250m in the UK overall, is a major signal that Britain is open for business”. “This is a fantastic vote in the future of the British economy and British businesses. Foreign direct investment is critical to the UK economy, safeguarding and creating around 100,000 jobs a year”. www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Jaguar Land Rover has taken the wraps off the latest variant of its F-Type sports car. The coupé version of the car, which was reviewed by Dluxe over the summer, made its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show recently. The convertible version of the Castle Bromwich-produced car went on sale earlier this year after being unveiled at the Parish Motor Show in 2012. Jaguar says the R coupé is the most dynamically capable, performance-focused, production car the company has ever produced. Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar, speaking at the launch, said: “Creating a sports coupé is the purest of design tasks, and also the most challenging; get it right and aesthetically the result will be as dynamic as the car should be rewarding to drive. In the F-Type coupé, I believe we’ve got it right. “The dramatic debut of the 550PS F-Type coupé in Los Angeles - possibly the most dynamic reveal of a car ever - underlines its performance credentials.” The all-aluminium car will be available in three versions: F-Type R, F-Type S and the F-Type.

CUSTARD FACTORY WINS MAJOR AWARD FOR URBAN IMPACT BIRMINGHAM’S Custard Factory has won a major award recognising the positive impact it has had on the city’s economy and culture.
The area is regarded as Birmingham’s creative quarter and is home to a selection of independent shops and cafés,a thriving music scene, public open spaces with distinctive artworks and a 2,000-strong community of trendsetting creatives from small innovative digital start ups to household names such as ASOS. The Custard Factory, set in 15 acres of Victorian riverside factories, was originally built by Sir Alfred Bird, the inventor of eggless custard, more than 100 years ago. Kevin Murray, chairman of The Academy of Urbanism, said: “These awards celebrate inspirational and heroic stories of places that are saved, turned around, rediscovered and rejuvenated. Great places don’t just happen, they are planned, shaped and supported by human endeavour which is why, against tough competition, the Custard Factory is this year’s deserving winner in the Great Place category.” The Academy of Urbanism is an autonomous, politically-independent and self-funded organisation, which aims to proactively shape places by sharing knowledge and partnering with communities; celebrate excellence in place-making; and encourage future urbanists. Other award winners included Marseille, as the winner of European City of the Year; Cork, for The Great Town Award; West End, Glasgow, for The Great Neighbourhood; and Lamb’s Conduit Street for Great Street.
In these days of low inflation, it’s people on fixed incomes and with savings in cash who feel the pinch and sadly, those in retirement often fall into both categories. With interest on savings as low as 2-3% and the cost of living increasing all the time, cash left in the bank is depreciating, leaving savers and investors in a worrying position.
“At first, I thought the model sounded complicated, but the banks have been making a fortune providing finance for cars for years. In this scheme, the bank is replaced by a private investor, who actually owns the car so their investment is protected. Income is provided by the monthly lease and the sale of the car at the end of the three years.”
However, Chris Hughes from Rugby, Warwickshire, has found a new way of making his money work for him and his wife in their retirement. Chris, a retired business owner, had previously invested in fixed rate bonds and was used to a healthy 7.5% growth rate. As his bonds matured, the new, low available rates of 2-3% shocked him. Chris, 67, said; “I looked around to see what return I could get from mainstream finance, and it wasn’t good. Then I saw an advertisement in the Sunday Times for a new scheme that invested in cars. The return was strong, and best of all, it was real people investing their money to help essential key workers access reliable transportation.”
The scheme, known as peer-topeer funding, has been increasing in popularity over the few years, particularly since the collapse of major banks in 2008. Buy2LetCars Investment Manager Scott Martin explains “We are finding that people are keen to cut the banks out of the loop. With Buy2LetCars, it is people who are funding other people. It meets two needs – the first is for investors to make money from their hard-earned cash and the second is to provide reliable cars for essential key workers who can’t access mainstream credit.”
Buy2LetCars is a scheme in which private investors take the place of big banks and loan companies by investing in vehicles that are then made available to people with healthy incomes who, for one reason or another, can’t access mainstream credit. Chris invested £13,500 in one vehicle initially – this provided him with a monthly sum of £250 for the next three years plus a lump sum at the end of £8,955. In total Chris turned his £13,500 into £17,955 over three years - a return of 33%.
As Chris says, “The banks aren’t lending any more – we are the banks now.” Chris was so impressed with the scheme he invested in a further eleven vehicles and has now recommended Buy2LetCars to his friends and family. “My advice to anyone with £13,500 in the bank is ‘just do it’. My wife Alma and I live comfortably off our monthly ‘car wages’, plus have a lump sum at the end of the three years to re-invest.” For more information on Buy2LetCars visit www.buy2letcars.com or follow them on Twitter.

“This year is a big year for Motionhouse. When I founded the company with my wife Louise in 1988 we had no idea we’d go onto perform globally. We were the original two dancers, sometimes choreographing the work so that one of us could go off to change music or lighting mid performance, and working experimentally on a small scale sometimes with live music. After many years of hard work and some nail biting moments along the way, we’re really proud that Motionhouse is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. We love experimenting! Our productions are rooted in dance but we also draw on theatre, circus, acrobatics and film to create visual spectacles, combining images, action and dynamism to surprise, challenge and delight. Audiences are genuinely at the heart of what we do, our work is devised to engage with audiences, not to be lofty and impenetrable. We perform in the same way in theatres - including some huge venues when we toured the US and China last Winter – as well as at festivals, in parks and on high streets so that a really wide range of people get to experience what we do. Broken is our latest production, it’s the company’s first major new theatre show since Scattered in 2009. The show follows our journey from big bang to living in caves through to life with the modern conveniences that we’ve become so comfortable with. It took over 8,000 hours of work to arrive at the finished production but it’s worth it when you see and hear the audience response. I truly believe Broken is our best production yet. Motionhouse dancers have a range of backgrounds and possess a variety of skills.
They are more like dance athletes, their energy is prevalent throughout in Broken. I collaborate closely with a designer called Simon Dormon (he created the cruise liner set for The Voyage aswell as the Scattered half pipe ramp) and we’ve devised a totally new set design for Broken. At times the choreography is literally embedded in the set. I also work closely with Logela Multimedia to create a film and digital dimension that has a real impact on what you see, experience and believe you are seeing. Since its debut in early October we’ve had some fantastic feedback and we continue to tour the production across the country and in Italy between now and March 2014.
“I TRULY BELIEVE BROKEN IS OUR BEST PRODUCTION YET” The best thing about my job? Every day I do something I’m passionate about. I love dance and exploring new ways to surprise our audience. But I also love inspiring young people to dance and perform. Motionhouse has delivered more than 6,700 workshops to children and young people in schools across the UK. The same dancers who perform on the international stage also work in schools and we have a fantastic and inspiring team, we’re really proud of that.

We raise funds every year from audiences to fund our education work with young people and our community programme, including Motionhouse Youth Dance Company. So when we’re not busy with performances, we’re running workshops and working in local communities. 2012 was a really monumental year. I was lucky enough to choreograph the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and an experience I will never forget. Preparing so many performers to make their individual contribution on a genuinely global stage and then stand back in a stadium with an audience of 70,000 (knowing that that was the tip of the iceberg in relation to TV audiences around the world) was incredible. The cherry on the cake this year was being awarded an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen. I’m deeply proud to accept such an honour but I honestly couldn’t have done it all without the support of Louise and the fantastic team at Motionhouse. What’s next for Motionhouse? Well we’re really focusing on delivering a great tour over the next few months with Broken and after that? We’re planning tours in the USA and China and the company is constantly evolving and pushing boundaries without compromising artistic integrity, so here’s to the next 25 years!” Broken returns to the Midlands at mac Birmingham on 12th and 13th February.
