ISSUE 15 WINTER 2013
WELCOME TO WINTER! After a wonderful summer the dark nights, strong winds and rain of autumn have come as a particular shock to the system, so it is with some trepidation that we look towards winter and whatever the elements may have in store for us. Should the cold air bite and Jack Frost lay his wondrous white carpet across the county, we’ve compiled some suitably warm yet stylish attire to layer up in; see our style sections starting on page 32. If the cold gets all too much for you, the dluxe team popped across to Portugal to explore some of next summer’s hottest holiday spots so that you can while away the dark nights booking your summer escape in confidence. The bad weather does mean we tend to nest more and what better way to increase your home’s comfort stakes than with carpet? Courtesy of Dalkard & Elliott we’ve got some truly stylish flooring to give away in our Wish List on page 6 and our Home section features festive fancies to adorn your home for the forthcoming merriment. As I write this, the dluxe office is in floods of tears after watching a sneaky peek of the new John Lewis Christmas advert. To help you make the most of the upcoming celebrations, our annual gift guide starts on page 24.

The Christmas story is perhaps more relevant today than it has ever been; a young, homeless couple, forced to rely on the kindness of others at the time of their greatest need. This Christmas many families will be struggling to feed themselves, let alone buy gifts so, in the true spirit of the season, dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND will be supporting the Leicester Charity Link’s Christmas Food Bank project. This great initiative helps people in poverty and those experiencing difficult times and is asking for help to ensure sufficient food stocks are in place for the critical Christmas period. All food donations, however small, would be very much appreciated. Simply deliver your donation to St Martins House in Leicester, where the food bank is located, on the 29th November between 12pm and 3pm. Their shopping list is far from extravagant and many of us will have multiples in our store cupboard: pasta, rice, soups, tinned fruit, tinned meat, long life milk, sugar, tea and cereals. Donations of these basic items will make such a difference to those in need. Small toys for children would also be most gratefully accepted. To find out more visit www.charity-link.org/foodbank We hope you can get involved and help spread some Festive cheer to those less fortunate than ourselves. Have a wonderful winter, and we’ll see you in spring.

A huge cheer rang out across Leicestershire as Great British Bake Off champion Frances Quinn, from Market Harborough, pipped Kimberly and Ruby to the post in a white knuckle battle of baking. Wednesday morning office chatter has severely dropped off since the series ended but the dluxe team still banter about bread and reminisce about the highs and lows of, what was surprisingly, one of the most gripping television programs of recent years. We’re already practising our muffin mix in time for next year’s auditions. A huge well done Frances!

A NEW CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR YOGA Bikram Yoga Leicester is evolving. The dedicated yoga centre on Friar Lane, which launched 9 years ago, is expanding to offer a second studio and by doing so is set to become an Urban Yoga Retreat. The addition of this second studio space will allow users the opportunity to sample and take part in additional styles of yoga including Ashtanga Yoga, Flow and Hatha Yoga that will be open to existing, non and new members alike. As part of the changes, the historic Bikram building is set to undergo a makeover too with a more urban, loft space feeling being adopted throughout. Key to the refurbishment are revolutionary Air Sterile Units which employ ultra violet light and radio waves to eat up any lingering bacteria and eliminate odours without the need for harsh chemicals, which ensures a healthy environment for everyone. Although the centre will remain dedicated to Bikram, the opening of a second studio will enable the team to create a centre of excellence for yoga in the midlands as well as offer yoga retreats and workshops in multiple yoga disciplines with internationally renowned guest teachers. Core to the expansion though is the wish to retain the fantastic community feeling of the centre, welcoming a diverse range of people into a healthy, relaxing and reinvigorating lifestyle. Panto’s back AT DE MONTFORT HALL!
Oh no it isn’t, oh yes it is!
dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND talk to the star of De Montfort Hall’s first pantomime for 20 years, Hardeep Singh Kholi, who will be donning a sequinned turban for the role of the Genie of the Lamp, in what is sure to be a festive treat for all the family.
how cohesive it seems to be as a community. Depending on what newspaper you read it seems we’re tearing ourselves apart with multiculturalism and while there are problems for sure, Leicester’s been quietly getting on with it all in the background. The knowledge and interest people have in each other’s cultures, beliefs and upbringing is just delightful; it gives me such hope for the future which is why I’m so proud to be here.”
Like many, Hardeep’s parents came to the UK from India in the 1960s and Hardeep was born in London and moved to Glasgow in Scotland when he was four. Despite his Scottish upbringing he feels a close bond with the city of Leicester. “It’s really exciting” he says animatedly, “I spend a lot of time here in Leicester, I’ve done a lot of work here and I have family here. I think Leicester is a bit of a special place that doesn’t really get the recognition it deserves.”
“I wouldn’t have done this” he confesses, “had it not been directed by someone that I knew. Susie McKenna and I are very good friends, she’s brilliant; she knows me and wanted me here and it’s just a lovely cast. A lot of people who do jobs like mine complain about how challenging it is; bringing up three kids on family credit, that’s challenging, this is an utter joy. So I think we’ll do well to remember that. A lot of people out there are struggling for work right now, we’ve got work and we’re well looked after, we are blessed.”
A well-known face on television and a familiar voice on radio, Leicester appears to think Hardeep is pretty special himself: “My solo show always sells out here first, even before my hometown, so there’s clearly an appetite for shows” although he immediately dispels any vanity in De Montfort Hall’s choice of his casting, “I think there may have been budgetary restraints on wardrobe and I can clearly bring my own turban.” De Montfort Hall’s retelling of the famous story of Aladdin is set to be a huge highlight in the city’s festive calendar. A feast of spectacular scenery, costumes, music, magic and Panto mayhem, especially written for DMH by Leicester’s very own Susie McKenna. Hardeep’s Genie of the Lamp will be joined by Leicester’s favourite Martin Ballard as one of the Chinese policemen and TV’s Jocelyn Jee Esien as the Empress of China so, in such company, is there not a lot of pressure playing a leading role in such a big show? The answer, quite simply, is yes. “Here’s the thing, I’m 44 and I’ve never done a Panto in my life. I’ve written Panto’s, I’ve worked on Panto’s but I’d never done one until this came along and it just seemed like the perfect storm because Leicester’s on the up. The urban regeneration of the city I think has been a real success, places like Curve have bedded in after five years and things are changing. Going for City of Culture status, whether the city gets it or not, means there’s never been a more exciting time to be here. So I think bringing back pantomime to De Montfort Hall is really significant and it’s humbling to be a very small part of the big change in Leicester this year.” “What I find astonishing about Leicester is
forward to working with a full complement of cast and crew, especially after touring with a one man show. “When you do solo shows, it’s all about you. There is a team for sure but ultimately, as far as the audience is concerned, they’ve come to see you. I can’t wait to be part of a team again. I love that camaraderie and the fact that you’re doing it all together. It’s also a brilliant opportunity for me to learn, as I’m the most inexperienced actor here; I’m not even an actor really. At my age to be paid to come to a place that I really like and be surrounded by people who know so much more than me well, I lucked out there didn’t I?” he laughs, but he does have a point, there are some big shoes to fill here (curled and with bells on the end) in what is an iconic role in an iconic role at an iconic venue.
How much Hardeep will be counting his blessings once the 14th December hits we are not sure. Thirty seven performances in the space of twenty three days, including matinees and performances on both Christmas Eve and Boxing Day sounds like an intense workload to us but one he is determined not to let daunt him “It’s not going down a mine is it? It’s going to be hard work for sure but we’re all being paid alright to do it and I don’t think you sign up for stuff like this if you’re not prepared to work hard.” So will he be spending Christmas day in a Leicester hotel room catching up on missed sleep and rehearsing his lines? “I have spent the last few Christmas days cooking at a homeless shelter in London and I’ll be spending my day off doing that again. I’ll go down on Christmas Eve and I’ll cook, we might be doing a Radio 2 show from the shelter on Christmas Day because actually, it’s a lovely way to spend Christmas.”
So what about Hardeep the performer? Pantomime is quite a leap from the years of presenting, and his unique mix of stand up and live cookery demonstration in his one man show Indian Takeaway. “The thing about Panto is that it’s so quintessentially British. It’s steeped in tradition and if you think about it, with this production, we’ve got black, brown and mixed race performers, there’s even some white people in this Panto - which is great because they need to be included. I mean, some of my friends know white people” he laughs mischievously, “although it may be Panto I think it is representative in some small way, of the wider issues and aspects of life. When we’re up on that stage, just imagine the mix of people we’re going to have in the audience. People that have never been to the theatre before might come because they are recognising people that are a little bit like them. Often when theatre is exclusively white people doing shows that brown Britons know nothing about, it’s difficult for anyone other than a white audience to feel welcome. Hopefully, when they see this more representative cast it will be emboldening.”
Aladdin is at De Montfort Hall from the 14th December to the 5th January. Tickets cost £18 and there will be British Sign Language interpreted performances on Monday 30 December at 2pm and 6pm as well as a relaxed performance for people with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability or sensory or communication disorder on Friday 3 January at 2pm
Perhaps in trepidation of due to his lack of acting experience, Hardeep is very much looking

Fine and Country Loughborough and The Charnwood Forest T: 01509 891 398 www.fineandcountry.com You could hardly lift a newspaper this Autumn without reading about an “upturn” in the property market. We all know the media have a knack of sensationalising any story be it positive or negative and whilst I am pleased to confirm rising confidence and general activity in the local property market, any significant increases in house prices is very much confined to London and the South East. Average and National figures are hugely skewed by the effects of London and particularly overseas buyers seeking to invest their capital into the London property market. There can from time to time be a “ripple effect” where activity and prices are influenced in the commuter belt, the ripple diminishes the further away from London you move. Happily the local property market has experienced a wave of activity through the late Summer and Autumn, more ‘high end’ houses have changed hands than in the previous quarter and with demand rising and supply fairly limited this inevitably causes a certain surge in the market.
2. BAUBLES 5. 7.
To experience a real and sustainable increase in house prices certain ingredients are necessary; crucially the financial ability of buyers to buy, wages have not significantly increased and it is difficult to see where an increase in property prices can be financed from. Secondly a period of sustained activity is necessary and might eventually lead to real and sustainable increase in prices.

3. STOCKINGS
My message is one of cautious optimism, at Fine and Country we have achieved sales on sensibly priced properties and it is very noticeable that those houses in well regarded areas, accurately priced and well marketed are the ones attracting most interest and usually achieving strong sales. Houses have not suddenly become easy to sell again and careful pricing coupled with good advice and far reaching marketing are the keys to a successful sale. This is our final dluxe edition of the year and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our customers, buyers and sellers, for their business during 2013 and look forward to continued activity into next year.

Talbot House Farm is a fine example of Georgian architecture having accommodation over three floors with imposing gabled elevations, intense period features and extensive accommodation. Careful to remain true to its origins whilst enhancing its size and qualities the property has been enlarged and lovingly restored by the present vendors to now deliver a fine and substantial authentic period property in a well serviced and convenient countryside position. The restoration programme is almost complete, significant extensions and structural work has been completed to produce the current impressive property, unrecognisable from its more humble farmhouse beginnings. Exacting and high calibre installations internally have been painstakingly implemented to ensure that every last detail is true to the Georgian origins of the property whilst introducing a fresh, light and contemporary lifestyle. Upon viewing it will be noticed that some works remain unfinished, it is the vendors wish that prospective purchasers are aware of this and know that it will be left for them to carry on the good work and finish mainly the cosmetics to their own style and choice.

Black Lane, Walton on the Wolds Offers Over £750,000 | EPC Rating F Walton House enjoys ultimate privacy and a simply stunning elevated location with open views. Now in need of general modernisation and upgrading having been enjoyed and occupied for nearly 40 years by the previous owners, the property occupies a gorgeous plot with surrounding gardens, mature trees, large flowing lawns and extensive vehicle parking. Of interest to the equestrian enthusiast the property sports a purpose built stable block including four loose boxes, tack room and stores, triple garage and yard all with light, water and power, there are a further two timber stables and open Dutch barn at the head of the paddock. The paddock itself is separated from the gardens by a distinctive ha-ha and is post and rail fenced with mature tree line and small spinney. We are informed the paddock extends to approximately 3.5 acres and the formal and informal gardens a further 1.72 acres or thereabouts. This is the epitome of the “forever family house” accepting that modernisation works are necessary, the essential elements of plot, position and potential are wonderfully satisfied together with existing space, sublime privacy and elevated open views across Wold’s farmland towards the Charnwood Hills in the distance. The rear of the house faces virtually due south. The accommodation includes an extensive ground floor with additions to both sides of the house and including four reception rooms, dining kitchen, utility, stores and shower/cloakroom. On the first floor are four double bedrooms, two with en suite and a separate house bathroom. The house has the benefit of oil fired central heating (the system has not been tested) and has replacement uPVC double glazing.
The Old Vicarage, Copt Oak Guide Price £695,000 | EPC Rating F The Old Vicarage is a significant Edwardian property with generous proportions and typically light and spacious accommodation which extends over three floors. The present vendors with their family are the first private owners of the property after it was sold by the Church, they have enjoyed living at The Old Vicarage for nearly 35 years and hope and fully expect the next incumbents to gain as much fulfilment from living in not only a lovely property but also amidst beautiful Charnwood countryside, whilst having the convenience of motorway access and easy commuting. With many retained characteristics of its era, the property boasts large windows, high ceilings, retained fireplaces and original doors with their brass knobs and hand plates, the rooms are generous and versatile with three ground floor reception rooms, the kitchen has the adjacent original butler’s pantry and boiler room which offers great potential for alteration and enlargement. The attractive staircase and large landings lead to three first floor double bedrooms, a nursery, house bathroom and master en suite. On the second floor are two further large double bedrooms, an attic room and separate box room, either or both of which could create further en suite facilities. Enclosed within approximately half an acre of mainly lawned gardens with established planting and clear boundaries, the driveway allows a right of access to the neighbouring Coach House, there is plentiful parking and garaging space (subject to the necessary consents). The immediately adjoining paddock to the south and western side and rear boundaries of the house is available for purchase by separate negotiation.

MERRY & BRIGHT
f your idea of decorating the house at Christmas consists of unpacking the same threadbare tree, dusty baubles and tinsel that’s seen better days, it might be wor th taking a look at the new Next Home collections for the festive season. Traditionalists who like reds and greens in their Christmassy colour palette will love the Highland Fling collection. Checks and jacquard patterns are intertwined with conversational prints and quirky quotes. Fabric decorations and rustic packaged gift sets add homespun elements, whilst willow stags and woodland animals appear throughout. If you’re looking for a more vintage, opulent and feminine feel to your decor, Christmas Romance could be the story for you. It perfectly captures the festive magic with mercury glass decorations and jewel-encrusted textiles. Add in a touch of faux fur and quilted velvet alongside elaborate candelabras and mirrored candle plates for a sense of faded grandeur. So, whether you’re looking for something traditional and homely or simple and stylish, you’ll find it at Next this Christmas.

Changing Spaces
The way we interact with spaces is constantly evolving. The formalities of the past have been forgotten when it comes to our homes and we have rejected the rabbit warren-like domiciles of our parents. Armed with sledgehammers and RSJ’s, we have renovated, renewed and rebuilt our way to a more relaxed, open and light-filled lifestyle. This revolution in design is not only limited to our home; our cities are changing too. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND talks to Neil McMinn, architect and founder of ink/drawn, one of the city’s most innovative architecture practices, about setting up practice in a city so full of regeneration and to find out about his vision for the city. “I’m Leicester born and bred” says Neil, sat in the dluxe offices blowing the steam off his mug of tea the morning after what had been touted as one of the worst storms to hit the UK in years was supposed to have hit. “We escaped that one didn’t we” he smiles. A paisley handkerchief peeks from a pocket in his contemporary tweed jacket, a reinvention of a traditional style for the modern day. “It’s always worrying, when a build is in full swing, scaffolding up and everything. A storm can cause havoc but only until it’s built, that’s the point of good architecture; there’s no big bad wolf going to blow down one of our houses” he laughs. Founder of ink/drawn, Neil has been in practice for over ten years now and started his career directly in a practice rather than in a lecture theatre. “I trained as I worked and attended college and university whilst actually on the job. I think this gave me a much more rounded experience within the industry; it wasn’t all just classroom theory, I was able to work on real world projects which needed real world solutions from the very start.”
practices.” The recession really enabled ink/drawn to grow quickly and as it grew so did its reputation, along with the size of the projects it was able to undertake. The business is now based in the once prestigious 9 Welford Place, a landmark of the city which after running as a night club for a few years, was in desperate need of having new life breathed into it. “It’s actually one of our projects as well. It used to be a nightclub and some pretty awful things were done to the inside. It was empty for five years before we started talking to the owners, we could see the potential and we’re now converting it into some amazing offices, apartments and commercial units; retaining the character of the building whilst making sure it works for a modern, urban generation.” 9 Welford Place is just one of Leicester’s landmarks that ink/drawn is busy reimagining, “We’re just preparing the build on a two hundred bed residential project on Western Road, which will continue the enhancement of the West End of the city. The build actually starts straight after the New Year and we’re project managing this as well as working as the architects for the scheme. This is probably the biggest complete job we’ve done from inception to completion; from taking the project through the planning phases, building regulations, on site project management to handing over the keys to the developer; this is the biggest so far.”
“I was able to work on real world projects which needed real world solutions”
After completing his training Neil took up a position at one of the city’s most prestigious practices but, perhaps due to the way he had trained, was soon getting itchy feet. “I was working for a great company with a great team around me but I felt stifled. I wanted to be free to take on the kind of jobs that really excited me and make my mark on them, rather than conform to someone else’s brand profile and ideal.” This drive to create was so strong that Neil jumped ship and started ink/drawn, a practice offering architectural design solutions that were innovative and achievable on time and on budget, just as the property market crashed and the country slumped into recession. “To be honest, I think the recession did help me. Many of my old colleagues were made redundant so I was saved from that uncertainty and, whilst it was a daunting time, a lot of developers had no choice but to drive forward with the projects they were working on. They obviously still needed to use architects and, as a new company with few overheads but solid experience we were much more attractive financially than the bigger
The Western Road development came about following the successful completion of a smaller project for the developer, where ink/drawn stepped in to what was a problematic development and offered some innovative thoughts on moving the project forward. “Fortunately our reputation for consistent, creative solutions has spread and we’ve built a good, solid base of existing clients as well as wide range of new developers who want us to get involved in some really exciting projects. At the moment we’re working on a scheme for a factory conversion in the city creating 150 apartments, a fourteen storey hotel near the university and we’ve drawn up some plans for the redevelopment of the Leicester City Council building.” ink/drawn’s plans for the redevelopment of the site that borders King Street and Welford Road includes 220 apartments, a hundred thousand square feet of office space alongside a five star hotel, shops and even an ice arena. “It would be great if that particular project came off, both for us and for the city but it’s all in the hands of the council now.” says Neil, “Whether our plan is chosen or not we’ll definitely learn from it and take that experience on to our next project. We’re so lucky to be working on local projects here in Leicester that allow us to fuse creative and imaginative designs that actually work, whilst being socially, economically and environmentally friendly.” To find out more about ink/drawn and their projects visit www.inkdrawn. com, find them at 9 Welford Place or follow them on Twitter @inkdrawn

Help to Buy
Boom.
There are clear signs of recovery in the property market, the most prominent being the fact that the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) recently reported that new house buyer inquiries were at their highest level for more than three years. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND caught up with Alasdair Dunne, Partner in Fisher German Estate Agents and Chartered Surveyors, who believes that one of the catalysts for this demand can be traced back to March/April of this year and the launch of Help to Buy.
Large range of Fireplaces, Fires, Stoves & Accessories in both stores
FIRECRAFT
Evans Fireplaces - 1159 Melton Road, Syston, Leicester, LE7 2JS, Tel: 0116 2600772 Hinckley Showroom - 2-4 Fleming Road, Harrowbrook Ind. Estate, Hinckley, LE10 3DU, Tel: 01455 633888
“Arguably, the housing market was likely to start improving anyway, in line with greater confidence in the economy, but clearly Help to Buy has accelerated the process. If it was George Osbourne’s plan to stoke a preelection house price boom, then the scheme is timely. Infact, Nationwide Building Society has showed all 13 UK regions have experienced annual house price growth in the third quarter, with the average property now rising in price by 5% per year. The East Midlands is in line with the national average with the annual change in property price now at 4.9%.” Briefly, the Help to Buy scheme provides an interest-free loan of 20% of the purchase price of a newly built property for five years and is funded by taxpayers. Buyers still need a 5% deposit, but this additional loan enables them to buy a property they couldn’t otherwise afford. The buyer’s mortgage provider grants a mortgage on the remaining 75% of the value and after five years, the home owner has to pay interest on the outstanding 20% at a reduced rate. “In addition to stimulating housing demand and pushing up prices, the scheme would appear to be having a major impact on housebuilding. In September 2013 it was reported that housebuilding activity rose at its fastest pace since November 2003 and it is anticipated that housebuilding could increase by more than 30% by 2015. This is certainly true across the whole of the East Midlands as we see an increase in new homes being built at all levels in the region.” So the year seems to be drawing to a close on a positive note; the builders are building, house buyers are buying, the economy is clawing its way out of a recession and the property market is responding well. BACK TO BLACK?
NOT SO SAVAGE Say ‘Robbie Savage’ to anyone and it conjures up powerful images; whether it’s as a controversial football player, a bronzed ballroom dancer on Strictly or latterly as an informed and popular pundit for the BBC. We chat to the former Leicester City player in his Cheshire home as he conducts a photoshoot for designer clothing store Christopher Scotney.
ADDING COLOUR INTO YOUR SUIT SELECTION IS JUST WHAT YOUR WARDROBE ORDERED. BRING WARMTH TO EVERY PARTY AND BRIGHTEN YOUR OWN MOOD BY WORKING THE ODD COLOURED BLAZER OR SLACKS, OR BETTER – BOTH THROUGHOUT THE COLD WINTER MONTHS. EMERALD, OXBLOOD AND RAISIN MAKE THE GRADE.
So has image always been important to you? “Other people always make more of my looks than I do. I just am who I am. I’ve always had long hair, and I prefer my clothes to be simple and well cut. That’s just me.”
1
2
3
Has your style changed since you have retired from football? “Yes definitely. I used to wear baggier clothes as I was skinny and I thought it would make me look bigger, however these days that’s not such a problem!” (Laughs) “But I have to look a lot smarter for television anyway so my clothes are better cut with a slimmer fit.” So do you enjoy style and fashion? “Shopping is great – I tend to shop sporadically, buying loads of clothes in one go. Sometimes I order items online and get them delivered to my house to try on – that’s perfect for me. However, I love the touch and feel of clothes – it’s really important to me to be able to try before I buy. Stores like Christopher Scotney are great because they provide you with such a personal service – and Chris makes a good cup of tea!”
4
5
6
Are there any style essentials that you just have to have with you? “I would say a well cut blazer, a plain v-neck t-shirt (always v-neck) and a pair of Jacob Cohen jeans – they just fit so well.” And is there anything that you have regretted wearing? “Oh I used to have some atrocious stuff when I was a player. Particular low points include a lime green jacket and a huge faux fur coat that made me look like a polar bear! Anything I don’t want goes to charity these days. I support a local cancer charity as I have to go through so many clothes for television – if you wear something more than twice someone complains about it!”
9
You have gone from being a controversial footballer to a muchloved football pundit and all-round personality. How does it feel to have the adoration of the public? “I never really pay much attention to what people say – either good or bad.The best compliments I get are from people like Gary Lineker – if he says I’ve done a good job, that really means something.

Right up there with the meaning of life is another question: what is the key to healthy living? Leicester’s Hannah Patterson thinks she may well have cracked it and apparently, the answer could be as simple as ‘Just add water’! Hannah, who is a certified Bikram Yoga instructor as well as a TV presenter, is hoping to transform people’s health and well being by pioneering an innovative twoweek detox with a difference. Rather than taking anything away, Hannah’s detox programme aims to hydrate and improve the nutrition of participants by adding three key elements to their diet – water, green juice and a little bit of ‘me time’. After two years of studying nutrition, Hannah has come up with a simple plan that isn’t too overwhelming, designed to refresh and recharge your body without the hassle of a diet.
Hannah’s Green Juice Recipe:
HEALTH
Cucumber (half) Celery (2-3 sticks) Beansprouts (handful) Lemon (quarter) or lime (half) Mint (lots) Ginger (thumb)
Juice all the ingredients together and pour over ice.
The Detox:
Week One: Hydration Meditation
Work Out Whilst You Work!
Each day when you wake up, sit (no lying down) for one minute in silence with your eyes closed concentrating on your breathing. Spend 5-10 minutes before 8am reading from an inspirational book of your choice Drink a glass of water every two hours between 8am and 8pm. Water is the key to feeling more energised, less hungry and generally healthier.
In total, the programme involves 49 extra glasses of water, seven green juices, 14 minutes of silence and 140 minutes of positive reading. And that’s not a lot to ask for when the rewards are a cleansed mind, body and soul, so go ahead and give your body a break; you’ve earned it! For further info and to tell Hannah how you got on go to www.makeithealthy.co.uk
Over the next few months Office Fitness will be releasing software to accompany their product range, providing desktop reminders to exercise along with activity recording and goal setting. Future plans include WorkFit Live – a link up with Personal Trainers that allows you to exercise in bite size chunks throughout the day, all at your desk. Check out the full range on their website! www.officefitness.co.uk
You Know
Start your mornings as you did in week one, focusing on breathing and reading; then have a glass of filtered or bottled water before juicing yourself a glass of green goodness. Green juice helps to keep your insides clean, your digestive system happy and your body functioning well.
It’s no secret that obesity has hit epidemic proportions and no one needs to be reminded for the hundredth time that we should be “more active, more often”. With growing numbers of us dining al desco when midday commeth, why not bring exercise into the office as well? 12 million of us spend a third of the week there, which makes it a great opportunity to kill two pesky birds with one stone.
UK company Office Fitness has recently released a range of office-based exercise equipment ranging from mini bikes and walking treadmills to anti-roll dumbbells and resistance bands, all with the aim of moulding a nation of healthier, more energised and more productive workers.

FROM PORT
T
hink European getaway and Portugal doesn’t spring immediately to mind. However, with a pleasantly warm climate all year round, it’s actually a great place to grab some winter sun. It was with open minds that dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND’s intrepid reporters Matt Blackwell and Anna Price accepted their invitations to discover the city of Porto, the wine-producing Douro Valley and the Estoril coast.
Lying only 9-miles from the airport, the transfer to the heart of the Porto takes mere minutes and with no time difference, we couldn’t even plead jet lag as we hit the ground running – or rather walking for a guided tour of the city. A great way to take in the key sights, we wound our way up and down narrow medieval streets, stopping off at the city’s stunning Cathedral before mounting the 240 steps of the Clérigos Tower for a breathtaking vista of the city. If walking sounds worryingly strenuous,
just pop down to the banks of the River Douro and board a Douro Azul cruise ship to take in the vibrant Riberia and historic bridges at your own pace.
Looking for a new drink? Try White Port, tonic and mint, it’s the new G+T; you heard it here first! If gastronomy is your thing then the north of Portugal certainly won’t disappoint and worth a special mention is DOP Restaurant, at which renowned chef Rui Paula serves up Portuguese flavours with an international twist. We were treated to a five-course tasting menu packed with plenty to amuse the bouche, from the Explosive Melon with Prosciutto
right through to the fizzing lollipops that drew our evening to a close. It would be remiss to visit Porto and not sample its namesake beverage and a quick trip across the river puts you on the banks of the neighbouring Vila Nova de Gaia, surrounded by the cellars of the world’s leading Port brands. We toured Sandeman’s Cellars and left educated in the history (and taste… hic) of Port’s plethora of varieties. If your interest in the famous fortified wine blossoms after visiting Porto then you can journey north to the Douro Valley, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world and the home of the Quintas, to learn (and taste) more. As we wound our way along mountain roads towards the city limits and the inevitable flight home, I found myself thinking that northern Portugal has everything covered; from natural beauty to the beautiful game, high fashion to history. I returned charmed by a vividly varied region, nurturing a newly acquired love for not only the city of Porto, but also for it’s sweet, ruby export.

A
mere two and a half hour flight from the UK and with something to offer every type of traveller, the Estoril Coast is not to be overlooked. The short flight time, stunning beaches and child friendly hotels make it a sure fire winner for families and for couples. The atmospheric streets of Lisbon and its fantastic restaurants make it an unmissable holiday destination, says Anna Price. An afternoon spent touring Lisbon’s winding cobbled streets didn’t really do justice to the city’s historic beauty and breathtaking architectural features, but those with a penchant for the past are spoilt for choice by the bohemian Cafe A Brasileira in Chiado and the imposing Rua Augusta Arch, built to commemorate the city’s reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. Shoppers are well looked after by Lisbon’s answer to Bond Street, located in Chiado, where designer stores like Hermes and Hugo Boss sit alongside the small but perfectly formed boutiques of impressive home grown designers. Lisbon’s atmosphere changes when the sun starts to set and the colourful nightlife slowly creeps onto the streets as friends, families and couples gather to enjoy the food and wine of the region late into the night. The Estoril Coast’s amazing sunsets, quiet sandy coves, national parks, palaces and awe-inspiring coastal scenery make it the perfect place to explore with the one you love and one of the highlights of the region is the town of Cascais. This important port town was the last piece of land witnessed by explorers and tradesmen leaving and returning from various points across the Portugese Empire and was home to the largest collection of warships ever to exist prior to WW2, known as the great Armada Invencivel (the Invincible Navy) before they set sail on a fateful voyage to the shores of England in an attempt to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. If sightseeing leaves you cold and you fancy yourself as the next Adam Scott, there are some world class golf courses on offer designed to challenge every aspect of your game. The Lynx courses of Estoril and Cascais are not dissimilar to those we find in the UK – sunshine aside – and the fantastic concierge style service from the Estoril Golf Coast Team, who are able to take care of everything from tee times to tea times make it the perfect place to while away the hours.

Changing Traditions Making your big day stand out from all the rest can be tricky; nobody likes to copy from friends and bride envy can be a very unpleasant trait! We spoke to some wedding experts to get their tips on how to make your day as individual as you are.
We all know that nothing causes more drama at a wedding than the traditional bouquet toss. If you want to avoid your bridesmaids scrumming down before the disco, why not skip tradition and present your bridal bouquet to the couple married the longest. It’s a lovely, romantic gesture that’s sure to bring a tear to their eye.
We all love to scour over old photographs so why not ask married guests to send a copy of their own wedding photograph and incorporate them into your reception’s table numbers. The table number could equal the number of years they have been married. It may lead to some pretty random numbers but it’s a great way to make your wedding unique and celebrate their happily ever after.
Finding different ways to remember your big day is key. Why not hire a Silhouette artist or old fashioned Photobooth to record your celebration alongside your main wedding photographer? Not only does an artist entertain your guests but they are left with a charming wedding favour as a keepsake of the day. Photobooths represent a great way to inject some hi jinx into your reception- just keep the groomsmen away from it after a few drinks!
Tuck handwritten notes into your guest’s napkins to make your wedding more personal. You could share a favourite memory, list an inside joke, display an old photograph of you both or simply describe what they mean to you. This is guaranteed to encourage some smiles.
Everybody’s been to a wedding where the DJ plays the generic ‘classic songs’. On your wedding invites why not ask guests to list their favourite songs ready for your DJ to play? It’s sure to create a truly unique event and ensure that everyone is up and dancing all night long!

Sønderborg beach
Located in the middle of mountains in the Austrian Alps why not say your vows overlooking the wonderfully crystal clear Lake Zell? The magical beach is perfect for an alpine celebration and couples can hire a special ship, the MS Schmittenhöhe for a unique reception.
Perfection personified for 12 months of the year, in summer the lake projects a turquoise hue, due to pure water running in from surrounding glaciers, whilst in winter, when the water is frozen over, horses can pull newlyweds on sleighs across the lake.
Situated between two major oceans at the tip of South Africa, Grootbos Beach is part of a private reserve and is known as the best land-based whale watching site in the world, so you might even spot a humpback as you get hitched!
With Le Morne mountain as a stunning backdrop, this beach on the south west of the island is simply magnificent. Miles of turquoise sea and soft white sand make it a true paradise wedding location and situated on a private tropical coastline, couples can be assured of very few onlookers.
Located in the Soenderborg Municipality of South Jutland in Denmark, Sønderborg beach is a unique wedding spot, offering views of a grand castle. Known as the Las Vegas of Europe due to its simple wedding legalities, Denmark is favoured by couples wanting to wed abroad without too much paperwork.

INDEPENDENTS TRADE ON CONSUMER TREND FOR UNIQUE GOODS Independent traders in the county are looking to the current trend for products that are not available on the High Street to boost sales this festive period. As big brands continue to drive sales with low prices, the county’s boutique retailers are focusing on unique products that are often handmade, locally sourced or bespoke to attract customers. Areas such as Allandale Road & Francis Street in the Stoneygate suburb of Leicester are using their collective strength to promote their businesses.
AN OLD FAVOURITE RENEWED The iconic Silver Arcade has reopened after a ten-year hiatus and £3m refurbishment. The arcade, which was renowned for being a hub for independent retailers, was subject to extensive debate after it closed without explanation. The refurbishment has been extensive with many original features being restored along with the addition of large glass entrance doors to keep out the wind and rain and glass walkways to encourage the flow of light through the building. It is wonderful to see this gem reopen in the city centre and so far the retailers who have chosen to make their home there are resolutely independent. We hope that many more join them to recapture the eclectic and diverse shopping experience that Silver Arcade always offered.
Spokesperson for Stoneygate Shops, Debbie Johnson, who owns Powder Blue, a premium interior design and gift emporium, said “There has been no doubt that 2013 has been a challenging year for independent retailers, however in Stoneygate we have found that by working together and pooling our resources, we can achieve more than we ever could alone.” The Stoneygate Shops retailer forum is now embarking on a new marketing campaign for the area, including a Christmas Market on 8th December. Debbie continues “This is an amazing area with some fantastic retailers. We have seen brands like gents’ clothing label Vélobici and ladies fashion boutique open in the area, and combined with the unique nature of the products in stores such as Abiti, Outerspace, Artifact and Nest, we have lined up a fantastic offer for the Christmas season.”

In these days of low inflation,it’s people on fixed incomes and with savings in cash who feel the pinch and sadly, those in retirement often fall into both categories. With interest on savings as low as 2-3% and the cost of living increasing all the time, cash left in the bank is depreciating, leaving savers and investors in a worrying position. However, Chris Hughes from Rugby, Warwickshire, has found a new way of making his money work for him and his wife in their retirement. Chris, a retired business owner, had previously invested in fixed rate bonds and was used to a healthy 7.5% growth rate. As his bonds matured, the new, low available rates of 2-3% shocked him. Chris, 67, said; “I looked around to see what return I could get from mainstream finance, and it wasn’t good. Then I saw an advertisement in the Sunday Times for a new scheme that invested in cars. The return was strong, and best of all, it was real people investing their money to help essential key workers access reliable transportation.”
Buy2LetCars is a scheme in which private investors take the place of big banks and loan companies by investing in vehicles that are then made available to people with healthy incomes who, for one reason or another, can’t access mainstream credit. Chris invested £13,500 in one vehicle initially – this provided him with a monthly sum of £250 for the next three years plus a lump sum at the end of £8,955. In total Chris turned his £13,500 into £17,955 over three years - a return of 33%. “At first, I thought the model sounded complicated, but the banks have been making a fortune providing finance for cars for years. In this scheme, the bank is replaced by a private investor, who actually owns the car so their investment is protected. Income is provided by the monthly lease and the sale of the car at the end of the three years.” The scheme, known as peer-topeer funding, has been increasing in popularity over the few years, particularly since the collapse of major
banks in 2008. Buy2LetCars Investment Manager Scott Martin explains “We are finding that people are keen to cut the banks out of the loop. With Buy2LetCars, it is people who are funding other people. It meets two needs – the first is for investors to make money from their hard-earned cash and the second is to provide reliable cars for essential key workers who can’t access mainstream credit.” As Chris says, “The banks aren’t lending any more – we are the banks now.” Chris was so impressed with the scheme he invested in a further eleven vehicles and has now recommended Buy2LetCars to his friends and family. “My advice to anyone with £13,500 in the bank is ‘just do it’. My wife Alma and I live comfortably off our monthly ‘car wages’, plus have a lump sum at the end of the three years to re-invest.” For more information on Buy2LetCars visit www.buy2letcars. com or follow them on Twitter.

RELIEF ROAD BRINGS RETAILERS PENSION POTS – WHAT’S IN YOURS? Do you know what pension policies you have, what you’re entitled to or where you’ve invested? Well, if the answer is unclear, don’t worry you’re not alone. Matt Raine, financial advisor at Newby Castleman (Financial Services) Limited, outlines some helpful tips on how to start unravelling the maze! With most of us moving jobs and homes numerous times throughout our lifetime, it can be easy to lose track of what investments we’ve made and therefore be unaware of what we’re entitled to in retirement.
The £15m regeneration plan for Loughborough town centre is in full swing with the completion of the new relief road bringing a new flow to the town and a much needed pedestrian link to the, at present, two separate retail hubs of the town centre. One thing still under consideration though is whether buses should be allowed to travel through the Market Place once the town centre improvements are completed in autumn 2014. Both the council and retailers agree that continued access for local bus services is an important consideration and now they want to hear your views too. There are three possible options to consider all of which are available to view and vote on at www.leics.gov.uk
ESTABLISH WHAT YOU HAVE By pinpointing what investments you have and where, you’ll be able to determine what level of pension income to expect and decide if you need to reassess your retirement plans. You may also come across some pleasant surprises such as a pension you had 20 years ago. If you realise you’ve lost the details for relevant investments, don’t worry, as the Department of Work and Pensions provide a Pension Tracing Service to help reunite you with your money.
SHOULD YOU PUT YOUR PENSIONS IN ONE BIG POT? Before you make a decision about transferring all of your pension policies into one place, you need to consider what’s best for you: You could pay lower charges: Charges paid on a single consolidated plan could be less than charges on several smaller ones. However, do consider any costs involved in transferring your investments. Everything in one place: Putting your pension in one place will help you to become organised and review your future needs. However, review the current benefits you get with your other plans first and find out if you’ll be losing out if you leave early. Easier to keep track of your performance: You can keep a closer eye on how your pension investments are doing and easily make changes to your investment strategy. Remember to assess the investment risks of a new plan as you may not want to put all of your eggs in one basket.
COUNTING ON YOUR BUSINESS FOR RETIREMENT? Many business owners rely on their business for their pension. However, consider your options before retirement and ask yourself such questions as: What if I fall ill? Do I know the tax implications of selling my business? For how long will the value of my firm fund my retirement?
Taxation advice tailored to your needs... At Newby Castleman we pride ourselves on our ability to lead the way personally with the business and taxation advice we give to our clients. From large private companies and professional partnerships to smaller family businesses and sole traders, all our clients can be certain of a first-class personalised service, tailored to their individual needs.

DLUXE DINING BYE BYE BRUSSELS This year, why not say so long to soggy sprouts and overcooked carrots and try a side of something different? Here are some seasonal ideas that are sure to add a flourish to your festive feast.
The Perfect Winter Warmer!
Roast beetroot, red onion & chestnuts with maple syrup Combining the earthy taste of beetroot with the subtle sweet flavours of roast chestnuts and maple syrup, this succulent side dish is full of winter flavour.
Fenland Celery braised in White Wine, Cream & Thyme
Serves 4 as a side dish. You will need: 2 packs ready-cooked beetroot, drained 2 large red onions 200g cooked chestnuts, cut in half (vacuum packed) 3 tbsp olive oil A few springs of fresh rosemary, roughly chopped Salt & freshly ground black pepper 2 tbsp maple syrup
Serves 4-6 as a side dish. You will need: 1 bunch Fenland celery, separated into stems Small bunch fresh thyme, woody stalks removed 150ml white wine 250ml double cream 1 clove garlic, crushed Salt & freshly ground black pepper 25g butter
What to do: Preheat the oven to 180째C, slice the drained beetroot into wedges and add to a roasting tin. Peel the onions, and cut into quarters through the root. Leaving the root intact, cut each quarter in half again, giving you eight wedges from each onion. Add to the roasting tin, along with the halved chestnuts. Drizzle over the olive oil and tuck in the rosemary. Season generously with salt and pepper and roast in the oven for 25 minutes, stirring to turn over the vegetables about half way through cooking. Remove from the oven and pour over the maple syrup, tossing to coat, then return to roast for a further 10-15 minutes until the onion is soft when pierced with the tip of a sharp knife.
Roasted Radishes with Garlic and Rosemary Mellow and fragrant, this is the ideal side dish to be served alongside roast poultry or game. This dish is also a healthy low-GI alternative to roast potatoes. Serves 4 as a side. You will need: 800g radishes, topped and tailed 6 cloves of garlic, sliced Small bunch of rosemary, stalk removed 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper What to do: Preheat your oven to 200째C and simply put all of the ingredients into a medium sized ovenproof dish, mix well and season with salt and pepper. Place in the oven for 20 minutes or until slightly caramelised before serving straight away. www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
What to do: Preheat the oven to 180째C and using a potato peeler, take a thin slice down the outer edge of each celery stem to remove any tough strings. Cut each stem in half and for the thicker stems, cut in half down the length too before laying the celery end to end in a rectangular baking dish, tucking in the thyme sprigs. In a jug, stir together the wine, cream and crushed garlic. Season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper before pouring over the celery. Dot with butter before loosely cover with foil and baking for an hour or so, until the celery is just tender when pierced with the point of a knife. Remove the foil and bake for a further 30-45 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling.

Former international rugby player, Ian Robertson and snooker legend Willie Thorne guided a Q&A session with Neil before television auctioneer Charlie Ross hosted a charity auction in aid of Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. Bringing the sporting evening to a close was former international rugby player Ben Kay MBE, who took to the stage to treat guests to stories and memories from his exciting and impressive career.

Seduction, Scandal, Showbiz
All That Jazz...
certified classic of the West End and Broadway, Chicago is sassy, sleek and sexy and it’s coming to Curve this winter to make audiences all hot under the collar. Following in the footsteps of Curve’s festive productions of The King and I, 42nd Street and Hello Dolly!, director Paul Kerryson will be hoping that the musical, set in Prohibition-era Chicago, emulates the stellar success of past productions. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND caught up with the show’s two leading ladies, actress Gemma Sutton and former Emmerdale star Verity Rushworth who breathE life into the parts of fame-hungry murderesses, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, to find out whether he really had it coming.
“All men have it coming!” laughs Verity as we sat down for a chat on Curve’s mezzanine a week before rehearsals started. Three weeks is how long the cast will get to polish and perfect those lines and nail those numbers, something which both ladies admit is “going to be full on”, but they can’t wait to get stuck in. Not only is Chicago Curve’s much anticipated Christmas production, but it’s also the centrepiece of the theatre’s fifth birthday celebrations. So, are the two temptresses feeling the pressure from the show’s director Paul Kerryson? “He’s been very calm, collected and cool so far. I imagine him to be quietly confident and have everything under control. This musical is a particular favourite of his, so no pressure!” Chicago is based on a play written in 1926, but with its focus on the corruption of the justice system, obsession with celebrities, fabricated image and the press fabricating stories in order for news to be entertaining, Gemma points towards the fact that “it was
written 90 years ago but it’s as relevant as ever” as a possible explanation for the show’s longstanding success. As with all great musicals, Chicago has got some killer numbers (pardon the pun) and Verity believes that this is enough, “for me personally, the music sells itself, it’s brilliant. ‘All That Jazz’ is going to be an absolute joy to do; it’s one of my favourite songs!” Paul plans to inject a new lease of life into the musical by taking everything back to basics and using the original 1975 script. Gone are the black leotards, fishnet tights and minimal set that Gemma tells us are a product of Broadway in the ‘90s and instead audiences will be treated to a “refreshing new version”, complete with “more set and more costumes” combining to produce a show that is generally “more vaudevillian in its approach.” Also helping to take Chicago in a new direction is Drew McOnie who has replaced Bob Fosse’s original choreography with his own. “Our new choreographer is, well, he’s a bit famous. It’s going to be fabulous” smiles www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk
Verity, backed up by Gemma who concludes, “we’re very lucky to have him.” Die-hard fans of the show needn’t fear though, as Gemma reassures us that “the themes are still there, so it’s still going to be sassy and in your face, dealing with women who have committed murders becoming celebrities, because that was the way in 1920s Chicago.” Whilst both Verity and Gemma are very much aware of what has gone before them on stage and screen, they are confident they will bring something new to Velma and Roxy, “I think we’re slightly younger than others who have played the roles historically” says Verity, “so that in itself gives us a different take on the role. I don’t think I could do a carbon copy of someone else’s performance because you bring something of yourself to every role. Even though the words might be the same it’s definitely going to be an individual portrayal.” Chicago is set to hit Curve on 29 November and is running until 18 January 2014.
