So the last round of golf the SIXTYNINE degrees team played was pub golf but that doesn’t stop us being intrigued by the Cornerhouse’s latest attraction in Nottingham; The Lost City adventure golf course located in the entertainment hub’s basement. The Inca adventure features two 18hole courses with dramatic interactive features, such as talking statues and musical landscaping- perhaps not one to do after visiting the Cornerhouse bars then. Towering ancient walls complete with animated snakes and moving rocks transport players into a lost world of epic adventure, where they can discover their inner ‘Indiana Jones’ – and test their putting skills at the same time. Fifteen Years of FIERCE

10

The internationally acclaimed festival of art and performance, Fierce, returns to celebrate its fifteenth anniversary from 4th to 6th October in Birmingham. The festival is set to include a fresh series of innovative events and interventions, appearing in galleries, theatres, clubs, warehouses and streets across the city. Highlights from this year include two innovative performers in partnership with DanceXchange on Saturday 5 October. Iona Kewney has become known across the European performance scene for her unique approach to movement. At times disconcerting and unsettling, yet always compelling, Iona and her collaborator, musician Joseph Quimby, create a performance space like no other in Knights of the Invisible. Atlanta Eke’s raw and exposed Monster Body, a challenging exploration and demystification of the body will be presented at Birmingham Ormiston Academy by dx also. An extraordinary performer, Eke challenges ideas of objectification, disgust and the dramatic. Other festival must sees include theatrical interventions from Wolf in the Winter, German artist Eva Meyer Keller presenting Sounds Like Catastrophes, the return of Franko B dancing with an animatronic polar bear and the joyful psychedelia of the Joshua Light Show. Saturday night also plays host to the return of Club Fierce, featuring rising stars of the hip-hop world Cakes da Killa and RoxXan. Visit www.wearefierce.org for further details and to book tickets.

CANK STREET

‘You’ve never had it so good’ said someone at some point somewhere. But in this case it really is true as the SIXTYNINE degrees pixel pixies have been busy transforming our ugly duckling website into an all singing, all dancing multimedia swan of stylishness.

Hidden in the heart of the city you’ll find a collection of animals not normally found in Leicester. If our description seems a little woolly (!) then let us elaborate: 33 Cank Street is a temporary public art installation created by artist Shauna Richardson and designed as a giant diorama for her realistic life-size taxidermy-style animal sculptures created using crochet, a unique body of work she calls Crochetdermy. The collection has been designed to be viewed 24 hours a day through the windows of 33 Cank Street and St Martins and offers an eerie yet unmissable experience for passers-by.

Rammed to the gills with news, views and the very best do’s, www.69-degrees.co.uk features an extended version of the print magazine, a daily updated blog as well as exclusive features and interviews along with some amazing competitions. It’s all been designed to work beautifully on your smartphone or tablet as well, meaning you can grab a bit of SIXTYNINE wherever you go.

GLOBAL TALENT MEETS MIDLAND’S CREATIVITY Artists and designers from around the world will be showcasing their work in Nottingham during September and October at the 2013 Art & Design postgraduate exhibition at Nottingham Trent University. Artists from over 20 different countries, including China, India, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Ireland, Holland, Africa, Turkey and Spain alongside home-grown artists from Nottingham will display work at the event that marks the completion of the designers’ postgraduate education. One such student is MA Product Design graduate, Hannah Myers, who has created and developed local design business, Flare, during her Masters degree. Hannah set up the clothing company, targeted at female cyclists, after being inspired by her passions for mountain-biking and design. Her concept incorporates garments that are functional, aesthetically pleasing and tailored to a female cyclist’s physique. The postgraduate exhibition takes place from 23 September to 4 October at Nottingham Trent University’s City site. It will feature more than 180 students from the School of Art & Design and the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment displaying a truly diverse portfolio of work including photography, fine art, graphic design and visual communication, fashion, knitwear and textile design, film practice, puppetry and digital animation. Architecture, product design and smart design will also be part of the exhibition. The Nottingham Trent University Art & Design postgraduate exposition is free to attend and open to the public from 11am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. BE LIGHT

Ever craved the sophisticated lighting systems you’ve seen on the interior design shows? Well the new range of Hue wireless LED bulbs from Phillips may well be just what you’re looking for thanks to their ability to recreate any colour in the spectrum and operated by your iPhone OR iPad.

The LED technology inside every Hue wireless LED bulb is a little bit special and they couldn’t be easier to install. Just pick the lights or lamps you want to give the Hue makeover and screw the wireless bulbs in. Then connect the Hue ‘bridge’ to your wireless network, download the free app and turn the light switch on, so there’s electricity running to the bulb, and you’re all done. It really is that simple. You can use the app to capture the colours from any photo on your phone. Simply drag the pointer to a colour in your photo and the Hue bulb will change to that colour straight away. You can create multiple saved lighting schemes to choose from depending on your mood and even control them from outside the home. The Philips Hue starter pack includes the ‘bridge’ and three bulbs and costs £179.95 from any Apple store. www.69-degrees.co.uk

Superstar Tinchy Stryder helped celebrate Ten Years of Selfridges Birmingham and SIXTYNINE degrees were lucky enough to talk to him! You’ve collaborated with a lot of artists over the years ranging from Craig David to Calvin Harris, who’s been the most fun to work with and who’s been the most difficult? They’ve all been fun to work with to be honest. There was one time I travelled to Manchester to work with Wiley and he vanished after 5 minutes haha, that’s maybe the only story I can tell you for now!! Footballer and Pop Star are many people’s dream jobs and you could’ve done both. What made you choose the path you did? I’ve always loved both. But Wimbledon, where I was playing football as a teenager, was just a bit too far from Bow. As the music developed and the grime scene was coming to life around me, I met Wiley, music just became the obvious choice to me. It sounds like you really pioneered Grime as a genre with Dizzee Rascal; does this make you feel proud?

Tinchy Stryder Celebrates Selfridges 10th Birthday

Very proud, that’s a piece of music history right there. Let’s not forget Wiley too. Your fourth album has been in the pipeline for a couple of years now, what’s the latest on that?

MIDLANDS SALON WINS

BEST NEWCOMER AWARD

I’m in the studio every day perfecting the product. Every record on this album has to fit the puzzle, it’s coming together slowly but surely. Sorry for the wait! You’ve got a lot of interests in business outside of your career as an artist, where does your heart lie? My heart lies with music, always. Without the music a lot of the businesses wouldn’t have been possible, music has opened up a lot of amazing opportunities for me. What’s on your iPod at the minute? Jay Z’s new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, Disclosure’s Settle, Naughty Boy’s debut Hotel Cabana, Chance The Rapper’s Acid Rap mixtape is incredible. And I’m really liking Sam Smith too. What’s your guilty pleasure? Does table tennis count? I can waste a lot of time playing that. How important is fashion and style to you? Very. I’m a bit obsessed with it to be honest. Clothes shopping is kind of dangerous for me, especially at Selfridges!! Do you have a favourite designer? I like a lot of brands. All the usual suspects APC, Alexander McQueen etc. There’s a wicked new brand called Blood Brother I’ve been wearing a lot recently. Look out for it. www.69-degrees.co.uk

Midlands hairdresser and previous SIXTYNINE degrees stylist Kyle Beasley has won the title of Newcomer of the Year at the British Hairdressing Business Awards. The national award scheme run by top industry publication Hairdressing Journal (HJ) recognises not only excellence in professional and styling skills but entrepreneurial vision and branding. Twenty four year old Kyle opened his Leicester city centre salon, in stylish St Martin’s Square, in September 2012 and was chosen to represent outstanding achievement within the industry. Kyle commented “This has been amazing way to celebrate our first anniversary as a business. The whole team has worked really hard and to receive this recognition from the industry is just fantastic. The community in Leicester has been really supportive, and it is great that new businesses can start and thrive in the city.” Kyle Beasley Hair St Martins Square, Leicester. ounded by three Kiwis in 2001, Gourmet Burger Kitchen does exactly what it says on the tin and delivers some top quality, meaty burgers. Whether it’s beef, chicken, pork, fish, veggie or speciality (Persian lamb anyone?) you can be assured of a mighty meal. They’re not afraid to go out on a whim and create innovative taste combinations, throwing beetroot, egg, pineapple, onion rings, avocado and grilled mushrooms into their various burgers and it is for this reason that we love them. Gourmet Burger Kitchen only has two rules, to always serve the best burgers and have fun. All burgers are made to order in the open kitchens and there’s not a microwave in sight, literally: check for yourself! Everyone’s had a thin and limp burger before, but if you want to actually taste it, you’ve got to go gourmet.

inners of Mailbox’s recent ‘Great British Steak Off’, which SIXTYNINE Degrees’s Jon Fraser helped to judge, Miller & Carter certainly know exactly how to serve a stunning steak. From the field to the butcher’s block to the grill, only the finest and most flavoursome cuts will make it to your plate and with an extensive wine menu you can be assured of a worthy wine to provide the perfect accompaniment. We’d recommend a chateaubriand to share if you’re celebrating a special occasion. However, it’s not just about the beef; the premium steakhouse is offering great tasting fish, lamb, chicken and pork options, all grilled to perfection.

mbodying that je ne sais quoi of French dining, Côte Brasserie follows the current culinary trend in France by taking everything back to basics. Inspired by the many bistros that populate Paris, Côte offers a modern approach to classic dishes such as steak frites, tuna nicoise and mouth watering moules marinieres. We love the intimately lit, informal yet chic surroundings in which Côte invites you to sip a glass of Kir Royale or pick at a bowl of juicy olives as you peruse the extensive menu. Pop down between 12 noon and 7pm to enjoy two courses of £9.95 or three courses for £11.90.

The Feeling. British pop-rock quintet The Feeling are back with a new label, a new album and a whole new lease of life. The most played band on radio in 2006, The Feeling dominated the airwaves with hit singles from their debut album Twelve Stops and Home. Fast-forward to 2013 and the boys are now on their fourth long-playing outing and despite showing signs of maturity, Boy Cried Wolf still retains that unmistakable trademark The Feeling sound. Matt Blackwell sat down with lead singer Dan Gillespie Sells to find out what’s been going on in The Feeling’s world in the two years since their last album was released.

You and band mate Richard met at the Brit School, did you always know that this is what you wanted to do? Oh, I knew I wanted to be a musician long before Brit School. When I was about five or six I whinged and whinged until my Dad bought a piano from this pub. I still own it actually, it sounds awesome and I use it on the records quite a lot because it really brightens things up. It’s now in the pub that I own, so it’s gone from being in a pub, to a house and then back into a pub again. I knew I wanted to be a musician of some kind, but I didn’t necessarily want to be a front man, it was never my thing to be the main guy, I just wanted to be in a band. Obviously the Brit School has had a string of incredibly successful alumni, was there ever a sense of expectation to succeed? Not really because I was there quite early. The school had only just opened www.69-degrees.co.uk

and was still finding its feet. No one had been through it and become incredibly successful so it was more like an experiment, it was chaotic but bloody good fun! I think the school was destined for success though, because if you get all the musically inclined kids in the whole country and you put them together in this kind of funnel school, it’s almost like the school shouldn’t have to do very much. They have lots of successful kids coming out of it because it attracts the kind of kids that want to specialise in music or acting. So were The Feeling one of the first success stories then? Well after we left the Brit School we kind of floundered in the wilderness for a while. We were all musicians but it was a good few years until we became successful. We weren’t really well known until 2006 and we had left the Brit School in 2000, so it was six years before it actually happened. Your last album came out just over two years ago, what have you guys been up to in the inbetween time? Has it just been writing and recording for the new album or have you each been on your own personal journeys? Well, there’s been a lot of weddings and childbirth, but for me, I’ve been working on musical theatre shows and a lot of my own projects because I’ve got the studio here in Hackney. We’ve signed with a new label and made a new record so part of the reason for the delay came from moving on from Island Records and starting to work with BMG Records. How’s the musical coming along?

theatre

Yeah, it’s great! I’ve got a friend who writes for Doctor Who and we’ve been talking about working on something for the theatre for years. He’s a great writer and he’s a fan of the band so it kind of made sense for us to do something together. It’s not been full time, but we’ve been doing that at the weekends every now and then when we’re not recording and he’s not working on Doctor

Who. It’s a fun little project and it’s coming along nicely, hopefully by next summer we should have something ready to come into the theatre. It’s also great because it means I’m really excited when I come back to The Feeling to work on the new record because I’ve been doing something else. I don’t know which one to call my day job and which one I’d call my hobby, but it all feels like a hobby, do you know what I mean? It sounds like you’re just having a lot of fun right now? Definitely, when you’ve got a major record company leaning over your shoulder expecting you to come up with hits, talking to you about demographics, airplay and what is expected of you, it becomes virtually impossible to be natural and make it fun. With our new record we just

“It’s nice to be working with a team that are as excited as we are.” relaxed and put lots of love into it, not because we had to, but because we felt like we wanted to. After leaving Island Records we decided to work independently; we know how to engineer and produce and we’ve got our own studio so we made the whole record ourselves. We then had this record and thought: ‘what can we do with it?’ and before we knew it BMG decided to put it out. They’re a great team and are signing us because they’re excited about the record based on the material, as opposed to basing it on our reputation. It’s nice to be working with a team that are as excited as we are. So has this experience meant the band has undergone a rebirth? Yeah! Working with Island Records nearly finished us off towards the end. It’s not a personal thing because we’re

very grateful to them for what they did for us, they gave us our career and we worked really well together for a few years. After a while they became so fearful of us not getting the kind of radio play we used to get. But this endless need to try and make success is really unnatural, it wasn’t us and it didn’t make any sense anymore. I’ve had a listen to the new album and there are some great tracks on it, but even from the song titles, I get sort of a certain sense of melancholy. How much of yourself bleeds through into the music that you write? Way too much! (Laughs) The part I’ve never been good at is shielding myself, but then I feel that’s why we’ve got such a loyal fan base, because I’m prepared to say what’s going on in my life and be honest about it. I don’t tweet about it and I don’t go on about it in the press as much as I do in my songs. The album is essentially a break up album; I broke up with my long term partner of five years around the same time we sat down to make this record and whilst I don’t really think about what I’m writing, afterwards you look at it and think, well yeah that’s a break up album! I didn’t mean to, it just happened. When you write songs that come from such a deeply personal place, is it then hard to go out and perform them on tour every night? Does it open up old wounds, or does it give you a sense of release? It’s very cathartic actually, letting it out is the best thing. In many ways, writers can be the cruellest of people because we have this outlet. If anyone wrongs us we can write songs about it, it’s like you always win in the end if you’re a writer! I think that even if you’re not a songwriter or a ‘writer’ writer, to write down your feelings is really healthy, I’d recommend it to anyone. Do you have a favourite track on the new album? It changes, but I like ‘Empty www.69-degrees.co.uk

22 “I love my studio and we have so much fun in there, but after a while I’m itching to get back on the road.” Restaurant’ a lot, because it’s quite a fresh sound for us and I really enjoyed writing it. ‘I Just Do’ is another one of my favourites and it seems that people are really reacting well to it because it’s lyrically straightforward and very honest. Have you been able to gather any reaction to the new material? We like to road test songs before the album is finished so we’re always out doing secret gigs and playing stuff live and it’s all been positive so far! There’s not much we can do now though, we’ve done the record and it’s an album that’s as honest as we’re ever going to make. I’ve put all of my thoughts and feelings on the line and if people turn around and decide they hate it then that’s fine. I’m proud of it though and feel quite positive about this record; everyone that has come back to us has said it feels like the ‘old’ Feeling so that’s really positive. The album’s out in October and will be supported by a national www.69-degrees.co.uk

tour. When you’re on the road, is it all work, work, work, or do you have time to kick back and let loose a little bit? Touring is brilliant; it’s like more fun than anything else. We get loads of time off on the road and it’s actually more hard work being in London! We’ve all got so many things going on at home, when we’re on tour we almost get more sleep than any other time, so bus life is great. I love going to all these towns up and down the country and I really enjoy seeing what’s going on; finding antique shops, visiting mates and seeing who turns up at the shows, it’s always fun. Well I was going to ask what the most enjoyable part of your job is, but I’m guessing it might be touring? Well, it’s 50/50 actually because I love my studio and we have so much fun in there, but after a while I’m itching to get back on the road. Then when I’m on the road for too long, I start to wish I was at home in the studio, so if we’re always

switching between the two then I’m a happy man. And the worst part? The worst part of the job is probably when we’re asked to go and do a morning television show. We have to get up really early and then they put a camera in your face, it’s not very nice! The Feeling Academy 2, October and Leicester on

will be at the O2 Birmingham on 26 at the O2 Academy, 29 October.

Boy Cried Wolf will be released on 7 October.

PONYTAIL TAKEOVER

Eugene Lin

Fashion week favourite, the humble ponytail made a welcome return to the London catwalks, albeit with a variety of twists. The TONI&GUY Art Team updated the classic style by adding a 3D twist, coupled with a defined centre parting. While an elegant, 60s-inspired, lowslung ponytail, was created for the Paul Costelloe’s triumphant return to London Fashion Week. Yifang Wan’s dishevelled ponytail combined with a low, side-sweeping fringe – the perfect fuss-free style for two-day hair.

In a fusion of East and West, oriental-inspired hair was juxtaposed with western clothing to create unique shapes and finishes. Travelling Samurai with a fashion twist was seen at Jean Pierre Braganza with a sleek ‘n’ straight style that featured a loop, adding a sense of the orient to the classic runway look. At Belle Sauvage, faux fringes combined with extreme height, extreme length and poker-straight bunches brought a sense of manga to the collection.

as an innovator within the hair industry, TONI&GUY have been bridging the gap between high fashion and hairdressing for fifty years now. This iconic British super brand remains committed to its vision through continued sponsorship of London Fashion Week and London Fashion Weekend.

Autumn winter ’13 also saw the reappearance of the top-knot in all shapes and sizes, from a basic bun to a chic chignon. A contemporary, high, fan-shaped top-knot was created for the Ashley Isham runway while a raw, textured, double-knot gave the classic style an edgier feel at Phoebe English.

THE ICONIC

LBD www.69-degrees.co.uk

H

eadlining SIXTYNINE DEGREES’ range of classic icons, we take a look into the history and reasonings behind the four most famous words in fashion:

35 THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS. ranging from a peplum, to longsleeved designs, the pop star, turned WAG, turned couture creator has proved her worth when displaying her take on the classic LBD.

Everyone remembers their first sighting. Most will say it was way back in 1961, on Hepburn’s gorgeously blasé Holly Golighty in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, whilst others will opt for Wallis Simpson; the original other woman. Every generation of woman has their own Little Black Moment. Mine, for better or for worse, was Posh Spice writes Georgia Mumby. As an easily influenced child, the sight of Victoria Beckham standing in front of a Union Jack bus started an obessesion with dresses that were little, black and generally, hideously expensive. But what is it about the LBD that makes it so special it has its own acronym? (in 2010, the Oxford Dictionary of English listed the abbreviation) And why has it been able to stand the most challenging task, of never ever going out of style? Could it be its simplicity? Or the fact that it’s the most versatile garment ever created in the world of fashion? Or… could it be the mystical power it holds, the power which boosts confidences by sexily screaming revenge at foes with its figure hugging influence? My money may be on the latter but what ever the reason, the LBD has spent decades carvings its reputation into the cold, hard walls of fashion history. It was 1926 when the Godess of style herself, Miss Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel first introduced it to the world. Despite previously worn purely by widows (think Queen Victoria after Prince Albert), Chanel’s slightly masculine, longsleeved black dress was deemed “a uniform for all women of taste” by American Vogue, and was likened to a Ford, referencing the mass-produced Ford Model-T at the time. Surviving the Great Depression and World War II, thanks to an economically friendly design and adaptability that suited each woman of every social class, the LBD soon became an unstopable staple of feminine style. It was Dior’s ‘New Look’ reconstruction after the war which first began to transform the LBD into more of a Ferrari rather than the afore mentioned Ford. Worn by the likes of Rita Hayworth in the 1946 film Gilda, and Lizabeth Scott in Too Late For Tears (1949), the little black dress suddenly became a neccesity for every sultry femme fatale in Hollywood, and the symbol of a woman not to be messsed with. Whilst the ‘50s saw a boom in synthetic fibres, causing the dress to rocket in both popularity and accessability, the ‘60s took Mary Quant’s miniskirt to its heart and the style of LBD began to innovate to new heights. For many though, it is the LBD which we mentioned at the start of this piece which has become the ultimate symbol of it’s style;

Hubert de Givenchy’s 1961 hommage to the garment in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s.’ Still proving its intense popularity 45 years after the film’s release, the dress, described by Christie’s auction house as “a sleeveless, floor-length gown with fitted bodice embellished at the back with distinctive cut-out decollete” worn by Hepburn’s character Holly Golightly, auctioned for £410,000 alongside the famous elbow length gloves at the auction house in london, in 2006. Fast forward into the ‘90s and hemlines were getting shorter, styles were getting tighter, and women were getting a whole lot braver with the little black dress. A prime example of this being Princess Diana’s glorious revenge dress. The dress, worn by the Princess of Wales in 1994 at Hyde Park’s Serpetine Gallery benefit, made the front pages of every newspaper and has gone down in LBD history. Dubbed the revenge dress, Di donned the skin tight Christina Stambolian design a day after the documentary regarding Charles’ infidelities had aired. Stepping out of a private car, with legs up to her arm pits and a smile that displayed little to no heart-break, the figure-hugging ruched minidress was the perfect way to show Charles and the world how confident and, most importantly, sexy the 32 year-old Royal was. Whilst the cool kids of fashion, Westwood, McQueen and Marc Jacobs have all engraved their rebelious tendencies on the LBD with stretched crepe materials, surprising embellishments and sharpe cuts; the Italianos - Valentino, Armani and Dolce & Gabbana - have all stayed true to the dress’ chicer side with knee length hem-lines, spaghetti straps and pencil skirt styles. Even my first love, Victoria Beckham, has taken her designing hand to this classic. With different variations

No matter who the designer though, the purpose of the Little Black Dress is definitely to stun: whatever style, maker or length you choose, you are guaranteed to catch an eye or two in a little black dress. From discovering its new found sexiness to challenging the mind of legendary designers, the little black dress has never seemed to loose it’s original simplicity. Constantine Tziambazis, Retail Manager for Womenswear and Personal Shopping at Harvey Nichols said: “Put simply, the LBD is one item that no wardrobe can be without; elegant and chic, it’s the fall-back essential when nothing else will do. It will take you through a host of diary dates and, choose well, you could see it lasting you a good few years.” It’s this adaptability which has enabled the LBD to remain so iconic. The style and concept of the garment, whilst of course adapted to fit moden life, has stood strong and surpassed any other trend in fashion. It’s exactly why women have become so obssessed with the LBD: it’s utterly timeless and with so many interpretations, the LBD is perhaps the only garment that has a style to suit every woman. Its iconic reputation and intense diversity has earnt it an esteemed place in fashion’s history and its future, whilst its accessability and simplicity has always remained a favourite on the high-street. Whilst colour trends fade in and out of fashion, when it comes to the LBD, black will always be the new black. Its effortlessness style is escapable, as its diversity is a must for any woman who is in dire need of something to wear for whatever occasion. As Chanel’s successor Karl Lagerfeld says, “One is never – over or under dressed with a little black dress” So why fight it? Every girl is in need of an LBD. www.69-degrees.co.uk

REAL MEN MOISTURISE JOHN PAUL MCGUIRK OF HARVEY NICHOLS explains the perfect daily grooming routine.

For years, women have followed the daily beauty mantra “cleanse, tone and moisturise”, so take note guys ... this is how it’s done

CLEANSE

Get deep down and dirty morning and night to ensure you remove the dirt from your skin, as blocked pores can lead to spots. Massage cleanser into the skin and pay particular attention to areas where dirt can get trapped like the corners of the mouth, the creases near the nose, the chin (which is especially prone to blackheads) and neck. Once the cleanser has been massaged in thoroughly, take a moist cotton pad and remove, working from the sides of your face inwards so you don’t get it in your hair.

TONE

Toner is an essential second step to remove any remaining bits of dirt as well as help soothe, nourish and hydrate the skin while restoring its delicate pH balance. Simply use a cotton wool pad to apply the toner across your forehead, cheeks, around your nose and chin to keep your skin super clean and firm.

moisturise

We’re exposed to central heating, air conditioning and pollution every day, and all these dry out our skin’s natural moisture, leaving it flaky and - gulp - prone to wrinkles. Daily moisturising forms a protective barrier, replenishing natural moisture. Apply a small amount twice daily with your fingertips and use a specialist eye cream for the more delicate area of your face. www.69-degrees.co.uk

HEALTH

LEICESTER TIGERS TRY BIKRAM YOGA FOR SIZE.

Over the years, yoga has been very much seen as an activity exclusive to women and, whilst that particular perception is changing at a rate of knots, there are still those whose thoughts drift to spiritualism and leotards at the very mention of yoga.

However,

there is a form of yoga that is quickly quashing the concept of yoga being ‘for girls’ and has been practiced by some of the region’s most masculine athletes – 10-time rugby union champions of England, Leicester Tigers. Leicester Tigers director of rugby, Richard Cockerill; himself a former hooker for both club and country, was introduced to Bikram Yoga in the city by his former assistant, Matt O’Connor. “I used to take the mick out of him (O’Connor) something terrible, because ‘yoga’s for girls’,” he reveals, but after heading down to Friar Lane for a class he admits “it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I have a bit of a thing with my back from my playing days and the stretching and competitiveness of getting through it was really good. It gives me the same buzz that I used to get from a training session as a player, but without the collisions!” Tigers’ last visit as a team to Leicester’s Bikram Yoga studio came prior to their Premiership Final victory over Northampton Saints at Twickenham last May. Centre Anthony Allen was one of over 20 players to take part in the class, revealing that it’s a workout unlike anything experienced before. “It’s awesome, but very tough. It’s not so much the postures or positions, which we do a little of at the training ground. It’s the heat making it ten-times harder. A lot of the guys are saying that it’s the hardest thing that they’ve done in terms of training sessions, because it’s so hot. We’re not used to it in England!” Leicester City Football Club also utilise the services of Bikram on a case by case basis to help rehabilitate injured players and the Leicester Riders have made initial enquiries about incorporating Bikram Yoga into their training. So there you have it, you’ve heard it from the cream of Leicester’s sporting talent and, bearing in mind our exclusive offer giving you 30 days of yoga for just £20, what other endorsement do you need? Travels With My Aunt 14 – 19 October @ The Little Theatre Henry Pulling, a mild-mannered retired banker, who leads a quiet life and loves nothing more than tending his beloved dahlias. When his eccentric and outrageous Aunt Augusta appears out of the blue with mysterious information about his past, Henry is drawn from the safety of his flower beds into a series of absurd and exotic international adventures. Henry, Aunt Augusta and more than 25 characters are inventively portrayed by just four actors who switch identities, nationalities, ages and genders in this whirlwind theatrical adventure, adapted from the celebrated novel by Graham Greene.

Paul Kerryson once again steps into the director’s chair to helm his third production of a Martin McDonagh play. McDonagh has tasted Hollywood success in recent years with In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, but it was The Beauty Queen of Leenane that rocketed him to fame in 1996, winning a nomination for Best Play at the Olivier Awards with the subsequent Broadway production going on to bag no less than four Tony Awards. This hysterically comedic edge-of-your-seat play charts the life of Maureen Folan, a 40-yearold virgin, her relationship with her manipulative mother, and her brush with romance in the mountains of County Galway, Ireland. www.curveonline.co.uk

BEATS

AND TREATS

HOURS OF AURAL PLEASURE FROM THE SIXTYNINE DEGREES SOUND MONKEYS IN RESIDENCE, DISGRACELAND, MARTIN WRIGHT AND MARIE WOOD.

BEATS

by Martin Wright And Disgraceland.

BASS MUSIC: Twerk It Bitch. By the time you get to read this, hopefully the image of Miley Cyrus thrusting her chickenesque ass into Robin Thicke’s crotch will no longer be burnt onto your retina and solid food will once again be an option. So twerk is now an internationally recognised ‘thing’ complete with an entry into the Oxford Dictionary and Miley’s VMA performance has polarised opinion on all sides of the moral compass. To clarify what this is all about, twerk is a name coined for a dance that involves leaning forward in a low squat while moving your hips back and forwards. There are those who insist that this comes from a traditional African dance via the Mapouka which was outlawed in the Cote d’Ivoire and other African countries in the late 90’s due to videos of it being marketed and sold as pornography. However, derivatives of it exist in many places around the globe, not least Columbia (Mapale) and the UK (Strippers). Yep - I said it. Strippers. If you are from the UK, up until August of this year, that’s probably the limit of your exposure to it in a nutshell. Anyway, I want to look past the dance and all the crap that goes with it, and look at the beats. if you go to the US right now, then you’re going to find a lot of music that lends itself well to this dance. Predominately based on the Roland 808 drum machine, it is music that’s been around for a long, long time. Think trap, think dirty south, think hip hop, rap and bounce. All these sounds can be associated with the dance, but there is one derivative that is now being referred to as twerk music

DIPLO

The first tune to early kick things off internationally was Diplo’s ‘Express Yourself in May 2012. In the words of Washington DC journalist,

dance music oracle and all round good guy, @marcuskdowling, “You have to look at Express Yourself and the general importance of OG crunk southern rap. Once Express Yourself blew up, it was like, “time to twerk bitches!” Diplo - “Express Yourself”

Fast forward to 2013, and along came Bird Machine by DJ Snake. Super stripped down, it came out on Mad Decent’s Jeffree imprint and features a classic bird call as a lead over a bouncing, rump shaking 808 sub. You can grab it here for free: www.maddecent.com/dj-snake-birdmachine-together-jeff038/

Since then a deluge of tracks have followed which have taken these themes and expanded and explored, not least Pickster & Riot Earp’s ‘Ratchet Gas’, Yellow Claw and Yung Felix’s ‘Dancefloor Champion’ and Tropikillaz ‘Hideho’. www.soundcloud.com/doandroidsdance/ pickster-riot-earp-ratchet-gas www.soundcloud.com/trapmusic/ dancefloor-champion-by-yellow www.soundcloud.com/tropkillaz/hideho

54 London Grammar. The A-Stream One million plays on Soundcloud, a top 40 single, two soldout London shows, a slot at Glastonbury and a track on the Radio 1 A-list - in less than a year, London Grammar, have rocketed from playing Nottingham’s local bars to becoming the buzz band on everyone’s lips. When we catch-up with their affable guitarist, Dan Rothman, it’s clear that these University of Nottingham graduates are taking everything in their stride. “I think sometimes within the band we don’t even realise it”, reveals Dan when we speak to him on an early autumn’s afternoon. “Obviously, it’s been generally quite overwhelming how quickly it’s all happened and we’re incredibly grateful for it, really”. Dan along with bandmates Hannah Reid and Dot Major were catapulted into the limelight after anonymously posting two tracks, ‘Hey Now’ and ‘Metal & Dust’, online at the end of last year. Their minimalist moon-lit electro and Hannah’s distinct emotive vocals have captured the imaginations of everyone from the blogs to the broadsheets, and even earned them celebrity fans along the way with The Vaccines and Basement Jaxx singing their praises, as Dan explains. “We played this festival in Scotland called Rockness and we had our dressing room next to the Basement Jaxx and The Vaccines; we were chatting with them and hanging out with them, which was weird”. London Grammar originally formed at the University of Nottingham when Dan overheard Hannah singing in their halls of residence. “When I met Hannah we just started playing writing songs together, playing gigs, and playing covers in rubbish bars with about three people.” It wasn’t long before the then duo teamed-up with producer/mutli-instrumentalist Dot who took their sound to a whole new level as Dan recalls. “When we met Dot I think that was when we were like ‘let’s form a band’, because there were now three of us and we started gigging and playing more”. Nottingham also helped to play a part in shaping the band allowing them to grow away from the spotlight of their hometown, London and feed www.69-degrees.co.uk

of the city’s individual scene. “It’s quite electronic the scene in Nottingham and that’s what quite a lot of my friends are listening to” Dan says. “Dot, in particular, was affected by that and that’s why he got into electronic production, because he had friends from Nottingham not just at university who had got into producing and that’s probably the biggest effect”. Even from the beginning the trio’s aspirations for the band were high. “I think it was just making an album that we were really proud of, that was the main goal initially and just hoping we could do a good job of it and that people would like it,” Dan says. It’s a goal that they’ve already realised as their debut album, If You Wait, has been released to unabashed critical acclaim. The record, like the singles, weaves a seamless dystopian soundscape hinged around Hannah’s soaring vocals to instantly give you goosepimples. “We consciously made a record, and we might even be criticised for, but we didn’t want to surprise anyone,” Dan tells us when explaining the thinking behind the record. “It wasn’t our intention to go and make this weird experimental record; it is a collection of songs that are emotional and spacious and that’s what we wanted to make and a record with a consistent mood”. Part of this mood is indebted to vocalist Hannah’s unique yet reassuringly familiar voice that flawlessly communicates every slight sensation and nuance. Her voice is reminiscent of generations of singers like Nico, Janis Joplin, Sade but remains resolutely her own. “She just has this natural perception of the world where she sense the loss in people, the sadness and emotions that relationships and friendships can bring about,” Dan tells us before catching himself and adding, “that sounds really morose and like you’re chatting shit? But, that’s kind of how I understand it.” The band’s soul searching lyrics are heightened by the filmic landscape they surround it with, something that’s born out of a love of film composers, like Thomas Newman (American Beauty), Hans Zimmer (Inception, Gladiator). “Dot and Hannah are constantly listening to Thomas Newman and Hans Zimmer and those composers and they are amazingly influential”, Dan reveals. It’s something that they’d like to explore further by scoring their own film in the future. “It sounds like a really geeky thing for a band to say we’ve only been around for 7 months, “yeah, we’d like to make a film score”. But, yeah I think we probably would I think it’s something

we all love,” Dan confirms. London Grammar’s use of bare programmed beats, intricate riffs and Hannah’s dramatic vocals have led to some obvious comparisons. “It’s pretty much the standard one we get, The XX and Florence And The Machine,” Dan tells us but it’s something again the band are handling well. “It definitely doesn’t annoy me, because I love The XX always have done.” It’s a comparison Dan sees as owing more to the fact that they have the same shared influences as their contemporaries “There are bands or artists before The XX that have influenced The XX and subsequently influenced us and that’s where the correlation lies, like Massive Attack, Portishead, Burials they have had an influence on The XX and in turn an influence on us.” With a record collection like this and an introverted debut and is there any chance of the band doing a four to the floor dance anthem in the future? “I think we’ll definitely be aware of that for the music we make in the future, but are we going to make a Calvin Harris record? Probably not”

Massive Attack, Portishead, Burials they have had an influence on The XX and in turn an influence on us.

The trio are set end their triumphant year hitting the road for their first UK tour and it’s something Dan’s a little nervous about. “I’m absolutely terrified! Hopefully we’ll be fine, but it’s definitely new territory for us and it’s going to be a massive learning experience.” Despite the nerves Dan hopes to do the album justice live. “The idea will be to create an atmosphere that’s quite emotional and stark and all those things you’d expect from the music,” Dan says. “We’re not the most serious people in the world, so we’ll have a bit of fun as well.” Read the full interview online: www.69-degrees.co.uk If You Wait – Out now www.londongrammar.com

Goldfrapp. Tales of us

Dissatisfied with the dead disco of their last album, Headfirst, Goldfrapp for their sixth release ‘Tales Of Us’ have taken a glittered platform step away from the multi-coloured dancefloor’s edge to plunge a barefoot once again into the dark undergrowth that the duo first unearthed on Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree. All the songs excluding one are named in the first person with Goldfrapp creating a breathtaking minimalist cinematic soundscape for each of the imaginary protagonists to play out their story. Simple picked guitars, exposed piano and sweeping strings triumphantly convey a melange of emotions; ‘Unna’ oscillates between unbridled exhilaration and fear and ‘Simone’ – a tale of a young girl sleeping with her mother’s lover – recalls the grand theatrics first scaled on ‘Horse Tears’. Tales Of Us is a compelling chapter not to be skipped in the band’s own dramatic story. MW

Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks Well, we’ll be damned NIN have only gone and made an electro pop album! Okay, more Depeche Mode than Little Boots but Trent, Atticus and friends have definitely explored a lighter terrain than the heavy industrial soundscape they pioneered. Fleshier tracks such as ‘Copy of A’ and ‘Came Back Haunted’ will still appeal to the old school NIN fans, but overall Hesitation Marks heralds new and unchartered territory. SP

Birdy - Fire Within

Diana Vickers - Music To Make Boys Cry Pop has often overlooked Miss Vickers as a serious contender, but this is all about to change. Where her debut missed the mark, MTMBC – all sugar-coated pop, saccharine melodies, sumptuous middle-eights with sprinklings of electro pop dust - has the xfactor. Lead single ‘Music to Make Boys Cry’ is the clear stand-out track, whilst ‘Boy In Paris’ and ‘Dead Heat’ showcase a more musically independent and mature side. MTBW flicks a defiant ‘v’ for victory. SP

Babyshambles - Sequal To The Prequal Birdy is now seventeen and still projecting a level of soul well beyond her years as Fire Within the successor to her 2011 debut stamps her original substance as a young musician. As a genre it may be pop, but her use of guitar in tracks such as ‘No Angel’ and basic builds in ‘Light Me Up’ let her do the talking. It’s honest, endearing, simple and set to warm a few hearts. KOC

If you’re a hardcore Babyshambles fan long awaiting the grit and grime of their previous recordings then you may well be disappointed as new long player Sequel to the Prequel, with fewer heavier tracks, is easy listening from start to finish. Whether or not Peter Doherty’s lifestyle remains as clean as this album is irrelevant, as the songwriting is better than ever (not to mention Doherty’s voice). But if it’s the band’s familial edge that you want, then upfront at their next gig is where you need to be. KOC www.69-degrees.co.uk

BIG SCREEN. BY DAVID BALDWIN

Carrie In the last decade, the horror remake has become a genre all of its own. There’s barely a single horror movie from the 70s or 80s that hasn’t been remade, ripping out the ingenuity and style of the originals and replacing them with cookie-cutter direction and a 12A certificate to maximise box office receipts. So what of Carrie? Adapted from the Stephen King novel by Brian De Palma in 1976, the original film earned a certain cult notoriety thanks to Sissy Spacek’s performance and the infamous bucket of blood sequence, but it was no cast-iron classic. Yet there are a few reasons to be relatively excited about this 2013 update, starting with the director - Kimberley Peirce, a woman who’s turned down a number of Hollywood offers since her late 90s drama Boys Don’t Cry earned her international recognition, a director more interested in human drama than cheap thrills. Then there’s Julianne Moore as Carrie’s religious nut mother. A more perfect casting you couldn’t hope for, Moore sure to deliver the disturbing performance needed to ensure that Chloe Grace Moretz’s Carrie unearths her telekinetic powers. And finally, there’s the fact that the original movie ended with the prom massacre, when readers of the book know that’s only the beginning of Carrie’s homicidal mission, her powers leading to the decimation of an entire town. Yes, we didn’t really need another version of Carrie. But if they’re going to keep remaking these things, then at least we can hope for the kind of pedigree this new version of Carrie has.

Metallica: Through The Never

The Fifth Estate

Captain Phillips

Music docs are big business these days, whether you’re One Direction or Morrissey. Trust Metallica to take things one step further. Not only is Through The Never a document of the band’s ferocious live gigs, but it’s also got (uh-oh…) an actual narrative, as Dane DeHaan’s roadie finds himself in the middle of some post-apocalyptic riots. It’s a ballsy move, especially as Metallica already border on the edge of silliness as it is. Could be laudable, could be laughable, but that’s Metallica in a nutshell.

Controversial Wikileaks founder Julian Assange gets the biopic treatment, as Benedict Cumberbatch dons a blonde wig and adopts an Aussie accent to play one of the world’s most wanted men. Beginning with the website’s takedown of an Icelandic bank, the main focus of the film is the release of a treasure trove of US state secrets that made Assange public enemy number 1 for the US government. Will he be painted as hero or traitor?

When we say that Captain Phillips is a pirate story, don’t worry - Johnny Depp won’t be mincing about the place, doing his grating Jack Sparrow routine. These pirates are ripped straight from the headlines, namely the 2009 boarding of a US cargo ship by Somali pirates, the first American freighter to have been hijacked in over two hundred years. Tom Hanks is the titular Phillips, whilst director Paul Greengrass looks to balance truth-telling and cinematic thrills.

Thor: The Dark World

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Escape Plan

The billowing red cape! The mighty hammer! The beautifully conditioned hair! Marvel’s most ridiculous superhero returns this October with his second solo adventure, although producers have sensibly retained the services of Tom Hiddlestone’s loveable villain Loki. In a move that seems intended to make Thor’s universe seem even sillier, he’ll be fighting ‘dark elves’ this time round, with Anthony Hopkins cashing another nice retirement pay cheque as Thor’s beardy dad.

Surprisingly, the first Hunger Games feature turned out to be a rather stylish piece of action adventure, making Catching Fire one of the autumn season’s must-sees. Star Jennifer Lawrence is now an Oscar winner, reprising her role as revolution figurehead Katniss Evergreen, thrust back into another Hunger Games that’s now populated with former winners, her competitors ranging from kids to pensioners. Expect more expert skulking from Donald Sutherland’s nefarious president.

The Arnie comeback isn’t quite going as the Governator might have hoped, so he’s teamed up with old pal Sly Stallone for this 80s throwback action flick. It’s a ludicrously simple premise that’s surely been made at least ten times before – designer of prison (that’s Sly) gets locked up in the prison he designed after being framed for a crime he didn’t commit. You already know whether you want to see it or not, you don’t need us to explain things any further.

LAST WORD 66

ROCKY ROCKY RA RA RA! After a three-year stint in the West End’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Oliver Thornton fully intended to have a well-earned break from the gruelling world of theatre. However, when SIXTYNINE Degrees’ Matt Blackwell met with him he told us how, when Rocky Horror’s FrankN-Furter came knocking, he really couldn’t say no. Appearing before audiences worldwide in over 30 countries and in more than 20 different languages, Oliver is under no illusion to the inherent pressure he faces stepping into Frank- N- Furter’s shoes as part of Christopher Luscombe’s epic 40th Anniversary production. “I’m so aware of everything that has gone before me but you cant really think of that, when you’re in the rehearsal room you just have to do what you do and forget everything else.” The estranged ‘sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania’ was the role that created an icon out of actor Tim Curry and made the role of playing Frank n Furter incredibly difficult to do justice to “There is something about paying respect to those who have done it before” admits Oliver, “I’d be foolish to run in the opposite direction for the sake of it, but you have to find your middle ground and make it your own.” Complete with suspenders, corsets and cast of drag queens fit for a royal engagement, The Rocky Horror show is certainly not one for fainthearted theatregoer. But with a devout cult following that reaches out to all the corners of the globe, the productions ‘naughty but nice’ reputation is one that undoubtedly has audiences rolling in the aisles time after time. www.69-degrees.co.uk

“I’ve known the piece from an early age” says Oliver “but I grew up in a really small town in Wales, so obviously when I first watched it I couldn’t believe that there was a world out there where people dressed like that. I remember just loving it and thinking – this is so much fun.”

I THINK IT’S HARDER WHEN YOU’RE YOUNGER

A production renowned for its audience participation, there are no shortage in huge singa-long numbers. Although it may be the infamous Time Warp that is the real show-stopper for many, Oliver prefers the finale floor show song. “We sing the famous lyrics “don’t dream it be it”. I really like that because I think it’s the message of the show - don’t dream your life away, actually live it as the person you want to be.” Despite playing leading roles in the west-end for over thirteen years, Oliver’s success on the stage is still one that takes him aback. “I went

to drama school in London and obviously at that age thought I’d love to make this my career, but I don’t think at any point that it would be possible, but thirteen years later, I’m still doing it! I’m very honoured and lucky to be in that position because acting can be a cruel world.” With the tour heading into its penultimate month, the production makes its long awaited arrival to the stage at Leicester’s Curve theatre this October. But with a gruelling schedule of eight shows a week Oliver reveals that it isn’t all glitz and glamour. “It’s exhausting but you have to be really disciplined and look after yourself, check that you’re eating well and all that sort of thing.” Thankfully Oliver is no stranger to a long schedule, and is confident in knowing that he can bring just as much enthusiasm to the last closing shows as he was in tours opening few months. “I think it’s harder when you’re younger, but you learn how to pace yourself. I hope that’s something that the people have supported my career would be able to testify to.” “Some people came to see me in Priscilla hundreds of times, I think one lady had come nearly three hundred times, I hope that all those three hundred were good!”

The Rocky Horror Show is set to hit the Curve on the 7th October and is running until the 12th. For tickets, visit www.curevonline.co.uk
