THE ART OF SCIENCE Nottingham’s Bonington Gallery is showing a series of paintings by Nottingham artist Sean Cummins which touch on failed dreams of utopia, the eroded belief in science and the once optimistic view that nuclear energy would provide Britain with endless cheap energy. In ‘The Potato Eaters Discover Cold Fusion’ Cummins juxtaposes the themes of an early Van Gogh painting and a posed, stagey photograph of a nuclear power station control room in 1963. It’s complicated arrays of analogue circuits, switches and dials can be seen as a tactile echo of the faith in a nuclear future and the larger belief that science was a force for good. These are among the issues subtly explored in the topical new exhibition which will be at Nottingham Trent University’s Bonington Gallery between March 12 and 28. The show is one of the first of a new wave of public-facing exhibitions at Nottingham Trent University’s Bonington Gallery and runs until the 28 March. The Bonington Gallery, Dryden Street, Nottingham NG1 4GG, is open Monday – Friday 10 am – 5 pm

Metronomy. Marie Wood catches up with the band before the release of Love Letters; one of the most anticipated albums of the season.

www.69-degrees.co.uk

Joseph Mount sits wide-eyed inside a small space shuttle bound for a crimson soaked planet stalked by sphinx-like cats. Released last November, the video for ‘Aquarius’ - Metronomy’s first single since the Mercury nominated The English Riviera – conjured up images of Joe in the three years since the band’s last record lying back in a field near his Parisian home, arms behind his head, watching the night sky in search of astrological inspiration for Metronomy’s return.

“No, not at all.” Joe laughs when we ask him about the supposed divine theme behind his band’s fourth album, Love Letters. So, why the sci-fi video for ‘Aquarius’? “That’s Edouard [Salier] who directed it” Joe explains when we enquire, like Sheldon Cooper rubbing his khaki trouser legs, as to whether he’d been boning up on Star Trek and Blake 7 for his intergalactic adventure. “I knew he wanted to have hairless cats in it and I thought, fair enough, you’ve got to let them do what they want” he says with a chuckle. But, the astrological influence didn’t stop there as the band also collaborated with the app, The Night Sky, to allow users to play the single if they lined-up their smartphone with the constellation of the same name. “To be honest, someone at the record label was like: ‘you know, we should do it on this thing.’ And I was like, ‘well, that’s a brilliant idea,’” he says, again laughing. With the record being released aptly under the air sign of Aquarius, surely Joe must have at least a tiny secret interest in astrology? “I quite like how ridiculous it is,” he says finally caving, “these things that just help you if you’ve got a bad feeling about something or you’re particularly moody - you can blame it on something that’s happening in space. I I knew he wanted to have like that, it’s quite hairless cats in it and I thought, quite reassuring.”

fair enough, you’ve got to let them do what they want”

In fact Love Letters was not born from one place, either in the heavens above or the land below, as Joe took a more basic approach to creating an album, seeking to escape the confines of being bound to a sole idea as he had been on the The English Riviera: a concept album based solely on his home county of Devon. “I wanted to do a record where I didn’t have to explain it in the same way that I did before” he says. If the album is defined by anything it is by something much more human than the events of the night skies and one that has characterised Metronomy’s career since the beginning: love. The band’s breakout album, Nights Out, was a four to the floor lament to unrequited young desire with tracks like ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘A Thing For Me’ and ‘On Dancefloors’. Its follow-up, The English Riviera, took a more mature approach - whilst holidaying on the west coast - contemplating floundering relationships on ‘Trouble’ and sensuous liaisons on ‘Love Underlined’. Love Letters picks-up the same baton as Joe was influenced by being away from his wife while on tour. “When you’re touring all your basic experiences involve travelling and being away from people, people you’re maybe in a relationship with or your family,” he explains. “That’s the only thing I could write about that was actually real”. Opener ‘The Upsetter’ urges in crack tones the record’s mission “I gotta beam

my message to ya” to a lonely drum machine, ‘The Most Immaculate Haircut’ is a last ditch attempt to save a broken romance and title track and single, ‘Love Letters’, is a near religious ode to Joe’s careerlong dedication to l-u-v.

17

The straightforward approach to the album also extended to the studio as the band turned their backs for the first time on digital technology to make it. “The only thing vaguely conceptual was me wanting to record it in an analogue studio and record it in a dated way” Joe says. The band performed live together at Toe Rag studios in Hackney onto reel-to-reel tape. “Most of the tracks on the record are live essentially,” Joe reveals, “things like vocals I did afterwards, but pretty much everything was done like that - it’s a nice sociable way to record.” By going back to the method that most musicians used before digital sent analogue to mixing desk oblivion it forced Joe and the band out of their creative comfort zone. “If you give yourself these limitations and you give yourself this way of recording it hopefully makes you write differently and write different kinds of songs. I kind of try to do it to make me do something interesting creatively”. Although recording the old-fashioned way was an experience the band relished, Joe’s certainly not throwing out his Mac anytime soon as he hastens to add, “I’m not against computers or anything like that, I love computers!”

One thing that remained the same was Joe’s place as the leader and main songwriter in the band. “I was still writing everything and I’m still in control,” he says with a sinister laugh. “Because [the band] was a thing I started it feels very personal to me - I’m too afraid to give any of it away.” With the responsibility solely on his shoulders and the pressure of following-up a Mercury nominated album was there ever the risk he’d crack Brian Wilson style and end up rocking in a sandpit with a fireman’s helmet for company? “I started trying to write the new stuff as soon as I finished The English Riviera and for me that’s the best way of avoiding the pressure… to start writing and planning the fourth record before the Mercury award nomination even happens.” And, as he confides, there’s always a much harsher critic to appease than the fans or the critics. “I always try and outdo any pressures I feel from other people with pressure of my own. I think it should always be coming from me rather than the record label.” Listening to the album it has a clear path: starting out with a basic handshake of pared down vocals and barren beats on the ‘The Upsetter’ only to break into a full gospel funk embrace for title track, ‘Love Letters’; it’s something that was by no means an accident as Joe explains. “If you listen to it all in the right order there’s a moment where it goes from feeling small and minimal to suddenly being luscious and open.” This way of thinking came partly from Joe hitting the vinyl crates to track back to the late 60s and early 70s when albums reigned; it was a time when the now standard 45 minute LP was considered short, studio time went into years rather than days and the musician’s creative freedom was decadently indulged. In particular, Joe took inspiration from bands like The Zombies and Sly And The Family Stone – bands that told a story over recorded opuses rather than individual tracks. “They made these

www.69-degrees.co.uk

records that were progressive in their own way at a time when the world was changing,” he says passionately. “It was an unusual time when people were allowed to be crazy and were almost encouraged to outcrazy each other.”

18

It’s a was time, he agrees, that is in direct contrast to the present day, where the album is becoming an increasingly obsolete format: streaming and illegal downloading have starved labels of the cash needed to give bands time in the studio and fans can ignore an album’s running order and cherry-pick tracks for themselves. So, if Joe could push Peter Capaldi out of the way and jump in the Tardis would he go back and destroy the means to stream and download? “If you’re a teenager, 13 or 14 years old, an album costs £8 or £9 and not everyone has that kind of m o n e y,

well not young people anyway,” he says “so, I think to have something where you can stream the music and then you can be like, ‘I want to buy this album’, and then you can save-up - I think it’s good.” Unlike antiSpotify proponents like Thom Yorke, streaming is something Joe sees, diplomatically, as opening up music to a wider audience and ultimately benefitting the musician in the long-term. “It’s easy for someone like Thom Yorke, it’s easy for older people to not think like young people” he says. ”Whatever I think, I’m a lot older than most people who are using Spotify and I trust them to make the right decisions, and if they like something to go and buy it and I think hopefully that’s what other people can appreciate as well.” Before

I just want people to enjoy the new album and to not be too cynical when they’re listening to it”. adding quickly at the thought of a 5ft 5 pony tailed ball of anger turning up on his doorstep, “I’m not slagging off Thom Yorke!” Although, he thinks it’s a pity that bands don’t get the time they used to in the studio it’s something that he believes strangely might actually work-out to be to the benefit of fans. “Even if you made a terrible record people had no choice but to buy it if they wanted to listen to it. Now, it’s a bit harder - you can’t really justify it as people don’t have to buy it.” Renowned for their live shows, Metronomy hit the road this March for a full UK tour. “Festivals, touring, festivals, probably some touring, and a bit more touring” he laughs when we ask him about his plans for the rest of the year. The line-up is still “the same old gang” with Oscar Cash, Anna Prior and Olugbenga Adelekan. The Michael Gondry directed video for their second single, ‘Love Letters’, sees the band taking their style-cues from The Four Tops as they sport matching Ron Burgundy erm, burgundy blazers, black turtle necks and cream slacks – it’s a look they’ll be taking out on tour. Joe also reveals that the album cover – all bubblegum pink clouds – will be part of the stage set. “We’re going to get a stage set sorted out and we’re going to go for that sort of feel – nice and pink.” With the past put to rights and the band’s immediate plans certain, what does Joe predict for Love Letters in the future? “Hopefully it will sell some copies in the real world,” he says pragmatically before adding, “I just want people to enjoy it really and to not be too cynical when they’re listening to it.”

THE MIDAS TOUCH

The golden age is back! A catwalk favourite for the new season, makeup shimmered at Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Van Noten and Donna Karan. We asked LOUISE STERENBERG-DYOSS, Manager of Beyond Beauty at Harvey Nichols Birmingham, how to achieve this most luxurious of trends.

SIXTYNINE Degrees welcomes new Fashion Editor

Details.

ON THE CATWALK: A 70s style glow was seen in force on the S/S14 catwalks at Topshop Unique, House of Holland and Donna Karan. Dolce & Gabbana and Dior extended the warm golden tones to the eyes with the latter even introducing metallic painted brows. Meanwhile, Dries Van Noten used gold thread on the lashes for a sexy, shimmering look.

www.69-degrees.co.uk

GET THE LOOK: Keep the look fresh and natural with Benefit Sunbeam complexion highlighter (£19.50) and Laura Mercier mineral cheek colour in Amberstone (£18.50); NARS highlighting blush (£21) adds definition. For eyes, layer different shades as you wish – we love Laura Mercier golden shimmer bloc (£31) and NARS eye paint in Gold (£18.50). For runway-ready brows, apply Benefit’s High Brow Glow Pencil (£15) under your brow arches for an instant lift. Keep lips luscious with NARS pure matte lipstick in Ginger Pink (£18.50) and NARS velvet gloss lip pencil in More (£17.50). Achieve a stronger look with Laura Mercier crème smooth lip colour in Mocha Myth (£20). Keep nails on trend with Deborah Lippmann lacquer in Boom Boom Pow (£18). For a 24-carat finish, spritz with the uber glamorous Show Beauty hair fragrance (£55) and Tom Ford Sahara Noir EDP (£100, 50ml). All products featured are available from Beyond Beauty and the SpaceNK Apothecary at Harvey Nichols Birmingham.

Hair. Sy-Anne loves exploring her visually creative side and works as a freelance personal stylist and photo shoot producer, supporting upcoming and established independent designers and boutiques. From High Street to High End, designers just beginning to boutiques, Sy will be translating trends from the runway to bring you global fashion looks on a local scale The Midlands may be in the middle of the country but we certainly aren’t middle of the road!

To create a whole look the texture of a style is key. Spring/Summer 2014 saw combinations of textures within the hair being used to add depth and distinction to subtly sophisticated locks.

DUALITY OF TEXTURE

At Jean-Pierre Braganza the hottest look was worked-in texture, with the focus on having slightly unkempt hair with an imperfect centre parting and strands styled behind the ears. Whereas at Ones to Watch, the focus was on incorporating a dry movement and texture at the back with strength at the hairline.

GYM BAG ESSEN TIALS Lifting weights for hours on end does wonders for your abs but chances are it’ll do little for your appearance (sweaty armpits, anyone?). We asked JOHN PAUL McGUIRK from Harvey Nichols to pick the gym bag essentials guaranteed to have you looking as good as you feel. 1

1

As any self-respecting gym bunny will know, what you carry your essentials in is just as important as the essentials themselves (Yes, I’ve spotted you comparing your designer wash bags in the locker room!) Out-do the competition with this fully-lined Paul Smith canvas wash bag, £110.

2

However hard you’ve worked out you’ll be left smelling as fresh as a daisy with Acqua di Parma Colonia Essenza Hair and Shower Gel, £28. This gentle all-over cleanser is delicately fragranced and enriched with trace elements and panthenol to leave you feeling fabulously fresh.

3 4 5

Spice up your post-gym prep with Marc Jacobs Bang Aftershave Balm, £28. It blends notes of black, white and pink pepper with aromatic benzoin, vetiver, white moss and patchouli for a masculine, woody scent.

2

3

Add a seductive new scent to your daily routine with Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Deodrant Spray, £20. Manly and modern, it boasts smoky notes of vetiver with warm accents of fir balsam wrapped in the racy softness of white leather. Daily workouts can play havoc with your skin so you’ll need to call on a pretty hardworking moisturiser ... and Elemis SOS Survival Cream, £42, is as high performance as it gets. The powerful formula of marine extracts, lavender and myrrh instantly sooth problem areas and leaves your complexion perfectly hydrated and comfortable.

RETRO HEAD

If one fashion accessory could represent the 80’s then it would surely have to be the classic Monte Carlo bag from HEAD. The bag of choice for every cool kid at school, the Monte Carlo bag has been reissued with a more subtle choice of colour schemes that nods to the holdall’s retro sensibilities rather than screams it out loud. Available in a new premium range of fabrics and leathers, the Monte Carlo still features a large main compartment with lockable zips, perfect for your old geography text books and smelly football kit. Grab the leather bag featured here for £149.99.

The Guys

ALL ABOUT THE TAN A-List celebs won’t leave home without their trademark tan in a can look but, for us mere mortals, the application of fake tan is a game of risk with runs, patches, and palms the colour of satsumas replacing the gorgeous golden glow that we all aspire to. So when we heard about Cocoa Brown by Marissa, a 1 hour tan that guarantees an effortless, glamorous, natural glow in just 1 HOUR, we forced international man of mystery and associate editor Matt Blackwell to try it. The Cocoa Brown 1 HOUR TAN mousse has gained cult beauty status since its launch just over a year ago and we can see why. Streak, scent and orange-free, Matt found the mousse incredibly easy to apply and was sporting a natural, streakless glow in an hour. So good were the results that Matt’s bottle was quickly pilfered from his top drawer for us all to use in time for the recent STUDIO SIXTYNINE party. www.69-degrees.co.uk

If biking it around 375km of mountain passes to single track forest routes sounds like your cup of tea, then Wilderness Scotland have exactly what you’re looking for. Your journey will begin in Aberdeen and will take you through the stunning surroundings of the Scottish Highlands until you make your way to the Ardnamurchan Peninsula! This trip is definitely not for the unseasoned mountain bikers, but there are many other holiday grades that include beginner and intermediate levels as well. Your 7-day Coast-to-Coast cost will come in at £1075, which includes both your accommodation and food for the entire holiday. Up and coming dates: 14th June 2014 – 20th June, 9th August 2014 – 15th August 2014 www.wildernessscotland.com/ adventures

So far every holiday has come with a price tag, but if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative then look no further than WWOOFan international organisation that offers those interested in sustainable and organic living the chance to help out on a working farm, getting involved in all things from milking and compost to cheese and wine making! In return for your 4-6 hours help your host will provide both accommodation and food. In most cases a certain understanding of the language of the country is helpful, but not always necessary. So, to make things easier why not choose a familiar European country, or alternatively take a quick plane or ferry over to neighbouring Ireland and spend some time on their farms? Breaks can range from a short two to three days to a slightly longer one or two weeks, it’s entirely up to you and your partnering farm! What are you waiting for, become a WWOOFer this year.

It is safe to say that the Isle of Man is an outdoors kind of place. If like me, writes SIXTYNINE degrees’ Caroline Spence, your idea of a Saturday afternoon is watching back-toback Game of Thrones with a bottle of red wine, this will come as something of a shock to the system.

37

A mere 50 minutes flight away (but you have been on a plane so you feel like you have travelled a long way), you enter into a microcosm of the British Isles with all the nasty urban bits taken out. A mix of gloriously green countryside, moorland purple with heather and stunningly rugged coastlines, it’s the perfect countryside, to get out and enjoy and everywhere you go on the island you can see people participating in some kind of physical activity. Regardless of age or condition the Manx are out there getting stuck into something.

So if you can’t beat ‘em... The first day of my trip was all about sea kayaking. The waters around the island are crystal clear and there’s a wide variety of sea life. If you are lucky you can see seals or dolphins frolicking in the waves or potentially the enormous but harmless Basking Sharks that graze on plankton (June or July are the best months for shark sightings). A great way to spend an afternoon, waterproofs and kit are provided for what is an active yet a surprisingly tranquil experience! From the town of Peel, we got a wonderful view of the castle built variously by monks, Vikings and locals to defend the island from raiders, pirates and smugglers. Day Two was mountain biking with the insanely fit Steve, who annoyingly wasn’t even breathing hard despite the rest of us suffering near coronaries on the aptly named ‘Heart Attack Hill’. A massive workout for everyone, regardless of age or fitness, there are a variety of routes from safe (i.e. roads) to difficult off-road tracks providing the appropriate thrills and spills (although the soft heather somewhat cushions any falls). The effort is worth it to see some of the most breathtaking views in the British Isles – drop out of the mountain mist to see panoramic views of countryside and coast in almost total silence. My third day was a Segway Safari – a recent addition to the island’s outdoor activities but amazing fun. The Segways are surprisingly easy to control with five minutes whizzing around the car park being sufficient to build up a bit of confidence. Accompanied by a guide you are led on a sylvan trail that smells gloriously of pine and really clears away the cobwebs. If all that exercise sounds a bit rugged for you, why not exercise your mind by visiting the Isle of Man Astronomical Society. A group of mad keen astronomers have taken advantage of the low light pollution on and surrounding the island and built a small observatory from which to observe celestial bodies. With seven designated ‘Dark Skies’ sites, the island is a great place for professionals and enthusiastic amateurs alike to indulge their passion. After all that activity, a decent meal is called for, and the island delivers with a range of locally sourced food & drink that is healthy but satisfying.

ISLE OF MAN:

ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND ON YOUR DOORSTEP A ‘must try’ is the regional delicacy ‘Queenie’ scallops, slightly smaller than normal and served in a variety of ways – we had them with pesto and melted parmesan, which was delicious. Another great favourite is Loaghtan Lamb, a variety of sheep specific to the island, famed by its shaggy coat and long horns. To wash it down, try the local Okell’s brand of beer – my favourite was the light Manx Pale Ale, not very strong at 3.6% but wonderfully light and sweet, great for a pit stop after all that exercise. A brilliant destination for short breaks, visit visitisleofman. com for more information. Getting there: Fly from Birmingham Airport to the Isle of Man in under an hour (approx 50 minutes) for around £125 return (including taxes) www.flybe.com Where to stay: stay at the cosy Regency Hotel where the service and the food is top class. Weekend deals are available. www.regency.im

BIKRAM LAUNCHES URBAN CITY YOGA

HEALTH Bikram Yoga Leicester has evolved. The dedicated yoga centre on Friar Lane, which launched 9 years ago, underwent a refurbishment over the winter that saw the addition of a second studio, allowing existing, non and new members the opportunity to sample and take part in further styles including Forrest, Dynamic and Flow Yoga, in addition to Children’s and Pregnancy Yoga.

The newly christened Urban City Yoga will remain dedicated to Bikram, but will be expanding in other areas in order to become a centre of excellence for yoga in the Midlands. As part of this, Urban City Yoga will be holding workshops in multiple yoga disciplines with internationally renowned guest teachers. Spring has already seen an Ashtanga vinYoga Krama Workshop in which Ervin Menyhárt, one of the highest trained teachers of dynamic yoga in the Midlands taught beginners, trainee teachers and current teachers alike the ‘technology’ of dynamic forms of yoga, along with the necessary principles to adopt in order to build a sound, intelligent, personal practice.

SEX TIP!

To ensure you don’t get stuck in a rut, your sex life constantly needs refreshing. We asked UK sexpert Rachael McCoy what we should be doing, how and where; and this is what she came back with!

1 2

Challenge yourself sexually.

3

Change your technique.

If there’s something you’ve always wanted to try sexually, then try it! What’s stopping you? The more honest you are and the more you challenge yourself sexually, the more confident you will become.

Try a new sex toy.

The most exciting sex toy for couples that was launched last year was the We-Vibe 4. It is a couples vibrator that sits inside the woman as you penetrate her giving you both extraordinary sensations during sex. Available for £125 from www.we-vibe.com! What tends to happen during sex is people find something that works and then they stick to it. Always explore different ways of doing things and don’t just put the usual suspects in the usual places; use other body parts to create different sensations and techniques. Communication is key!

Personal Trainer - Alexis Fletcher

Follow these four exercises for an all over work out in under 5 minutes and if you’re feeling brave, you could always repeat the circuit twice! Ensure you warm up before and cool down afterwards and try to combine this with at least 30 minutes of daily activity such as walking and cycling. For more of Alexis’ advice, check out her fantastic blog: www.alexisflex1.blogspot.co.uk Fitness trends have veered away from slogging it out on the treadmill in recent years, placing high intensity training firmly in the spotlight, and it looks like it’s here to stay. In our ever-increasingly busy lives, finding time to train can seem a nigh on impossible task, so we asked Alexis Fletcher, Personal Trainer at Virgin Active how to make fitness flexible, fast and focused.

Ervin will return to Urban City Yoga on 30 March for an Ashtanga workshop focusing on Vinyasa techniques and postural intergrity and after delivering a succesful three-hour workshop on backbends, the founder of Equilibrium Yoga and well-being centres in Peterborough and Huntingdon, Sandra Heider, MA, MA, will be back for a Hip Opening Workshop on 25 May. Urban City Yoga have a variety of monthly workshops on the horizon, to keep up to date and register for classes go to www.urbancityyoga.co.uk or call 0116 261 9262 Bikram is @ Friar Lane, Leicester www.69-degrees.co.uk

Squat Jumps: Stand with your feet hip width apart, push your hips back and jump as high as possible, landing in a squat position. Perform as many of these as you can for 30 seconds and then jog on the spot for one minute. Stair Sprints: This one’s simple. Find some stairs and run up them two at a time, jogging back down when you reach the top. Do this for 20 seconds, rest for 10 and repeat a further two times. Shadow Boxing: Punch alternative arms as fast as you can for 45 seconds, holding weights if you want to increase the intensity. Jog on the spot for the remaining 15 seconds of the minute.

5 MINUTE TRAINING

Burpees: Starting in either half or full push up position; perform a push up before jumping your feet in under your chest, finally jump into the air, clapping your hands overhead. Return to the starting position and do as many as you can in 45 seconds. Plank for the remaining 15 seconds of the minute.

BYE BYE BALDNESS

39

6.5 million men across the midlands are losing or have lost their hair. Male pattern baldness has long been the dread of every man – including myself, writes Jonathan Fraser. Although I’ve been prepared for it, as the years have passed I’ve become very aware of the continued loss of my hair. Like most guys it’s not something I’ve been comfortable with and feel that it has prematurely aged me as well as changed my own sense of identity. BEFORE

AFTER

I needn’t have worried as the process was pain free

WIN! LIKE WHAT YOU SEE?

His Hair Clinic are offering one lucky reader the chance to win a Scalp Micro Pigmentation treatment worth up to £3000! The lucky winner will be treated at their luxury clinic on Hagley Road, Birmingham. For your chance to win, visit www.69-degrees.co.uk Due to the nature of this prize terms and conditions do apply; please check the website for details.

With the cost, scarring and pain involved in a hair transplant as unappealing as the idea of a toupee I had begrudgingly become accepting of my baldness when I heard about Scalp Micro Pigmentation. SMP, as it’s abbreviated to, is a new treatment for hair loss sufferers who want a realistic and low maintenance solution to their hair loss problem. The treatment works by effectively colouring in the bald patches of your scalp with tiny tattoos dots which, when viewed from close up or far away, replicate hair follicles. Those having the treatment are left with what looks like an even ‘just shaved’ head resembling the likes of Wentworth Miller, Channing Tatum and Marvin Humes. There’s no anaesthetic, incisions or scars and the treatment can be adapted for style preferences or if you continue to lose hair. I contacted experts His Hair Clinic, based in Birmingham and the developers of the technique. Visiting their smart clinic on Hagley Road I met face to face people who had actually had the treatment and found it hard not to keep staring at their heads. The results looked fantastic and I was able to find out exactly how the treatment works as well as get answers to the many questions I had. SMP employs traditional techniques to tattoo tiny dots of specially developed pigment directly into the scalp’s second layer of the skin. Existing hair colour is matched and the technique allows for a slight variance of shade in each dot to ensure a natural appearance. The hairline is created dependent on what you want it to look like. If you decide you don’t like it in the future then a simple laser tattoo removal treatment will remove it quickly, easily and without any scarring. Treatments generally are made up of 2 sessions of 2 to 3 hours and, in terms of maintenance, all you need to do is moisturise and keep your hair clipped short. Pricing ranges from £500 to £3000 depending on how much treatment is required- some people use it to cover up scars or patches- a fraction of the cost of hair replacement therapy. Weighing up all the answers I had been given, looking at the finished results in real life and knowing the treatment could be reversed I booked myself in for the treatment… The night before my first treatment I was very nervous but I did eventually get some sleep after discovering the forum section on the His Hair Clinic website- www.hishairclinic.com. His Hair has clinics all over the world and the open forum is a worldwide space for those who have had the treatment to chat about their experiences. The multiple comments from guys saying it was the ‘best thing they’d ever done’ was massively reassuring!

My treatment started with Simon, my practitioner, discussing my expectations and getting an insight into the style of hairline I would like before marking it up with a white pencil. A decision as to pigment shade was made and I found myself sat ‘heads on desks’ style as if I was back in primary school. Waiting for the first touch of the needle I held my breath as, even though I have tattoos, I was worried that tattooing my scalp would be horrifically painful at worst, unpleasant at best. I needn’t have worried as the process was completely pain free although I had taken a couple of preparatory painkillers before we started. Chatting to Simon as he worked and listening to some pretty random tunes on his iPod also acted as a great distraction. Two hours later and my first session was done and looking in the mirror I was amazed. My baldness had gone, I was left with the appearance of hair and, although my scalp was a little red, it was so unnoticeable I went shopping straight after. A week of moisturising my scalp and I was back in for my second treatment, this is the one which perfects the look, defines the hairline and blends the SMP into your existing hair. By leaving a gap between treatments of around a week, the effectiveness of the first treatment can be measured. In my case my colour had settled slightly lighter so it was decided to go a little darker and to bring my hairline forward slightly making it less uniform in the process. This time the treatment took a little longer but as I got up out my chair and looked in the mirror I was truly astounded at what I saw- it was still me but from 10 years before. Everything about my ‘hair’ looked completely natural and there was no way I could tell where my old hair stopped and my new hair began. Since the treatment a lot of time has been spent looking in the mirror; just catching a glimpse of my new hair still comes as a shock to me – a good shock but a shock all the same. My partner was blown away by it and those friends who I’ve told about the treatment have been similarly impressed. Those people I’ve not let know haven’t picked up on the change although one or two have made comments about me looking well or by just saying ‘something’s changed.’ Would I recommend it? Definitely. Do I wish I’d had it done years ago? Yes I do. Should you get it done? Damn right! His Hair Clinic is at 86 Hagley Rd, Birmingham B16 8LU. THE MIDLANDS:

CAPITALISING ON CULTURE

The impact of the arts in the Midlands is a staggering thing. Once ignored for the bright lights of London, both the East and West Midlands have become heavyweight players in the international arts scene. Two major arts festivals are hitting the region this spring and we take a look at what you really should not miss.

International Dance Festival Birmingham 2014

Formally reserved for the culturally elite or mocked for its overly interpretive expressive forms, a new wave choreographers have brought dance to the masses. As an artform dance represents culture in a way that everyone can understand and relate to; no matter what language they speak and it is perhaps for this reason that the Midlands with its multicultural population has embraced it so much. Coming to Birmingham for four weeks from Thursday 24 April 2014 – Sunday 25 May, the International Dance Festival will feature an amazing programme of performances seldom seen outside the capital. Unique collaborations, community events, outdoor spectacles and a world-class programme of performance and participation in theatres and public spaces across the West Midlands will make up one of the biggest arts festivals in Europe. www.69-degrees.co.uk

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: Birmingham Royal Ballet will feature two world premieres of new works by young, emerging choreographers and heritage pieces by one of the choreographic greats of the twentieth century. The new works, Kit Holder’s Quatrain and Alexander Whitley’s Kin will be performed alongside Sir Frederick Ashton’s Le Rendezvous and Façade between 24 and 26 April at the Crescent Theatre. Hilightlghts at the Birmingham Hippodrome include Vancouver’s Kidd Pivot led by Crystal Pite, who will perform the Shakespeare inspired Tempest Replica. on the 2-3 May. Internationally acclaimed New Adventures and RE:Bourne bring a new production of Lord of the Flies to the Hippodrome featuring

a cast of young performers from the Midlands on the 14-17 May. In DanceXchange’s studio theatre, The Patrick Centre, Luca Silvestrini’s Protein explores themes of identity in Border Tales on the 13th -17th May. Mickael ‘Marso’ Riviere presents a double bill working with Egyptian and Lebanese artists on the 9th and 10th May whilst South Asian dance artist Aakash Odedra premieres a collaboration with one of the world’s leading digital arts organisations, Ars Electronica from Austria, on the 6th May.

Manhattan’s Upper West Side Comes To Birmingham Opening 57 years ago, West Side Story has gone on to become one of the most successful stage shows of all time. Based loosely on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and with songs like ‘I Feel Pretty’ and ‘America’, almost everyone will have at least a passing familiarity with the show that graces Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre from 1 – 12 April.

weekly spray tan and wear a lovely dark wig and it seems to suit me better than any part I’ve ever done. It really is an unexpected dream.”

When SIXTYNINE Degrees chatted to 23-year-old Katie Hall who plays the show’s leading lady Maria, she was well aware of West Side Story’s iconic status in Theatreland, admitting “I get this feeling every day before I go out on stage like ‘Oh My God, I’m about to go out on stage and play Maria in West Side Story’ and I’ve never had that with any show before, even when I was doing Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. There’s something special about this show, it’s an honour and I’m loving it.”

The story is set on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and documents the ill-fated romance between affiliates of two rival teenage gangs, one Puerto Rican and one white. Despite the fact the plot was conceived in 50s, parallels can be drawn with today’s society, particularly the gang violence elements and paranoia surrounding immigration. This is something Katie agrees with, and after watching some of the cast conduct a workshop with under-privileged kids who were having problems with anger management, she concluded, “I definitely think parallels can be drawn and I hope people will see that.”

With her English Rose beauty, Katie feared that she might have been discounted from the role of the Puerto Rican Maria before she had even auditioned, but is thankful that “luckily they saw past all that. Now I get a www.69-degrees.co.uk

When staging a show with such a hallowed history, there is always the question of how much do you tamper with a formula that is not necessarily in need of fixing, but Katie feels that they have achieved the perfect balance, assuring us that “The really great thing about this production is that we’re very much true to the original. The choreography is still the same but our director, Joey McKneely, has found a way to make it current, ensuring that it speaks to modern audiences.”

The home of new sounds and a safe haven for party lovers everywhere, Miami is every clubber’s true paradise and Hed Kandi Miami captures the city’s essence over 2 mixes with content from Miami’s legendary Ultra Music Festival and Winter Music Conference. With a selection of this season’s defining vocal deep house and harder house grooves, you are guaranteed to love tracks and remixes from the likes of MK, Route 94, Shadow Child, Prok & Fitch, Freemasons and more. MW

Local house favourites, The Mix Munkies, have teamed up with a stalwart of the Leicester House Scene, Rebecca Patel (aka Mrs P) to deliver a nicely constructed piece of vocal house. Not usually my cup of tea, but it was during the process of remixing the track for them that I realised what a fantastic voice she has. The release is backed up with a solid remix from (Steve) OD and myself and is out now on Coventry’s, ‘Proud Runs Deep’. www. bit.do/mixmunkies DISGRACELAND

A must have for anyone who likes their tracks classic and hard to find, for the first time since it began in 1991, the pioneering rave, drum & bass & jungle label, Suburban Base has made its entire back catalogue available to download. Up until now, releases from the label, which shut its doors in 1997, only existed in vinyl format. What’s more, the entire catalogue has been digitally remastered including sought after tracks from artist such as Son’z Of A Loop Da Loop Era, M&M, Rachel Wallace and many more. MW

It wouldn’t be a Disgraceland review without a little mention for my favourite based-in-Bruminternationally-renowned-blog, Generation Bass. This month, it’s a tasty Zouk Bass EP from Cincinnati based Carlos Rathero Valle. The 3 track EP really delves deep into polyrhythm history and brings it right up to date with super crisp production and some savage bass. DISGRACELAND

WIN WIN Ministry of Sound’s ‘Inspired’ series looks to the bold sounds of Australia’s dance music maverick Tommy Trash. Backed by some of the world’s finest such as Tiesto, David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia, Trash enjoyed a vastly successful 2013. The compilation series itself looks for artists to tell their own story through records, documenting those that have inspired their respective journeys to the top, giving each edition a uniquely personal feel. Here’s a tasty free EP on High Rankin’s new imprint, Rain City, from Geek Boy & Kreecha. I have to be honest and say that I have struggled with accepting the modern version of Deep House, however, when you listen to a release that is as well produced as this one, you can’t help but love it. The combination of Geek Boy’s melodies and Kreecha’s crystal clear production is a winner. www.bit.do/rainmaker MW

UK Singer/Songwriter, Natasha Watts reveals her stunning self titled debut album for SedSoul. Showcasing her impeccable songwriting and performance skills, this gem of a debut boasts a cross section of Soulful Bossa to 80’s fused R&B and classic grooves all laced with heartfelt sweet melodies and silky smooth tones. Drawing from her own life experiences ‘Natasha Watts’ is a rich musical tapestry of honesty, empathy, sensuality, determination, love, femininity and compassion. MW

As long as I live, I will always have love for Drum & Bass. There’s something about the beats and the bass, and their ability to carry any style of music that resonates with me. The third podcast from Mak’s Utopia music is a gem: a mixture of twisted baselines, vocals, and incredible beats. Established in 2009, Bristol based Utopia music was the brainchild of Mako who, out of a desire to look after his DnB family, wanted a label to reflect his style and passion. Listen to this podcast and you will feel that passion. DISGRACELAND

With little coverage outside of Portugese language media, it was through the US Blog www.doandroidsdance.com that I came across a raw, stripped down genre that has evolved from bail funk. Rasterinha, or Ragga Funk, has been billed as an evolved style resembling samba rock with elements of ragga and kuduro. Like Zouk Bass, it is billed as ‘sexy dance music’ and with connections to Latin America and the Rio Carnival, it’s not hard to see why. It came as no surprise to me when, weeks after the genre started to generate some buzz in English language blogs, Dutch wunderkid, Munchi, dropped an amazing free EP, Vol II: Rasterinha EP (Contos Do Caderninho Verde), which manages to expand on the theme, introduce elements that were not there before, but all the while keeping the funk raw. The Men – Tomorrow’s Hits The latest dose of rock ‘n’ roll from Brooklyn outfit The Men sounds more like the hits from yesterday than tomorrow. The vintage vibe throughout is not limited to one genre - it’s high-energy garage rock with a countrified blues twist all the way. With a barrage of sound (including horns) and hoarse vocals, first single ‘Pearly Gates’ is a definite highlight. Tomorrow’s Hits may not be distinctly unique, but it most definitely warrants a listen. KO

Foster The People – Supermodel Foster The People’s second album, Supermodel, isn’t as superficial as the title suggests as it both rejects and questions the exterior of people and seeks to look a little further within. It still has the FTB’s trademark clean harmonies and catchy choruses, but there’s now a darker element guided by heavier instrumentals. However, a more natural sound is achieved when the tempo is turned down and the playfulness is left intact. KO

Opener ‘Mask Maker’ followed by ‘Vox Tuned D.E.D’ hammer home the now familiar pummeling beats, tribal chants and disorientating binary of WIXIW with renewed rapidity. The intricate rhythms of ‘Darkslide’ and ‘Perpetual Village’ rock with an uneasy machine-like regularity, whilst ‘Can’t Hear Well’ and ‘Left Speaker Blown’ grant a small slither of warmth in this unforgiving landscape. Mess follows the themes first explored on WIXIW pushing them to the extreme. Like the stranger walking behind you on an empty street at night, the dark shadow in the corner, the cold wind on a summer’s day raising the hairs on the back of your neck, Mess is something you just can’t ignore. MW

Wild Beasts – Present Tense Having taken nearly a year to complete, Present Tense, blends rock, pop and electronica. Lyrically it lends itself to moments of frustration, but this is transcended by the floaty synths and repetitive beats. Tracks like ‘Wanderlust’ and ‘A Simple Beautiful Truth’ bring lighter moments of escape. Wild Beasts have perfectly captured a level of complex intensity, creating an intimate world of effortless hypnosis. Although dramatic, its simplistic approach leaves you feeling Zen. KO

Blood Red Shoes – Blood Red Shoes “This time it’s about being hedonistic and free and not worrying so much,” says Steve Ansell one-half of Brighton’s Blood Red Shoes. Recorded in a “big concrete room in Berlin”, BRS, for their fourth album, have cooked-up a messy bag of sexier and harder tracks with an electronic edge. ‘The Animal’, ‘Behind A Wall’ and ‘Cigarettes In The Dark’ give the album its depth, whilst the imperfections demonstrate that BRS are still as interesting and relevant as ever. Faith Healer. It takes listening to precisely five seconds of Paloma Faith’s comeback single to realise that you are already in the company of one of the best pop tracks that you are going to hear all year. By the time it gets to the chorus of Can’t Rely on You, with its defiant stomp and backing vocals from the songs’ creator, hit-maker-in-chief Pharrell Williams, it also becomes patently clear that Faith, reinvigorated and buoyant, is set to enjoy a bumper year. Can’t Rely on You is the lead track of her forthcoming third album A Perfect Contradiction, and her best yet: as equally upbeat and sassy as it is soulful, and with a positivity that’s impossible to resist. The inspiration, Faith says, came from not wanting to make a record as downbeat as its predecessor Fall to Grace, which documented failed relationships to mostly melancholy, ballad-like fare. “When I was touring the last album I got a bit bored of being upset,” Faith says. “I think sometimes when you write sad songs you write them in a moment when it’s like therapy, but then when you’re singing them 18 months later it’s like picking off a scab. This time I knew I needed to inject some hope. There’s some heartache, but it’s got a hopeful vibe to it. And I’ve returned to my soul roots, working with people I’ve admired for a long time.” A Perfect Contradiction is an evocative title - where did that come from? “I mean perfect contradiction in terms of the last album, because that was melancholic, but also in everyday life. You can’t have real joy without real sadness. It extends to a conversation I had with Pharrell. He was asking me about myself and I said www.69-degrees.co.uk

I feel an affinity with people who are a perfect mix of contradictions. And he said ‘do you think you are?’ and I said ‘yeah’ and then he told me I should call my album that. I went home and mulled it over; I decided it was a really good title, because it meant a lot of things. It’s to do with accepting difference within ourselves as well as other people and our experiences.” Faith worked with a host of names on A Perfect Contradiction (Raphael Saadiq, John Legend, Diane Warren) but it is inevitably the collaboration with Pharrell that is of most intrigue.

This time I knew I had to inject some hope

“He approached me at a party to work with me and we wrote a couple of songs together, and as we got to know each other through that time he said that he had this song that he’d written that he’d been sitting on for ages. He said he thought it would suit me, and did I want to hear it. I was like ‘of course’, and I loved it. It totally has my name on it. “Pharrell is very nice, humble, and so likeable. He works very hard and throws a lot away, because he only wants the best to come out.” He is certainly is a happy fellow, and the go-to man for a smash hit,

isn’t he? “Yes, but you want to hear the ones that don’t make it, though!” Faith is arguably as well known for her sense of style than she is for her music, and her appearance is a vital component of the entire songstress/fashion icon package. “For as long as I can remember I’ve had it drummed into me that presentation is important. My family is full of women who really make an effort. I’ve never been around people who just wear jeans and t-shirt. “In fact, the other day I was walking around Brick Lane with my mum, my aunt and my cousin. This girl came up and said ‘you four look like brilliantly dressed women; can I take a picture for my art project?’ She later wrote to me on Twitter later to say ‘sorry, I had no idea it was you!’ It was so funny.” But getting stopped in the street was partly what made Faith head across the Atlantic to make A Perfect Contradiction. “I do get stopped a lot – it’s flattering but it’s difficult to detach yourself. Ultimately, I wanted to write an album that was down to earth and about real issues, and I didn’t feel that my life was conducive to that over here. It’s not a realistic lifestyle to have being stopped by people all the time; it doesn’t promote a realistic attitude of life. People can’t relate to it.” After A Perfect Contradiction hits the shops in March, Faith says she can’t wait to get on the road and reinterpret the new songs for a live audience. “We haven’t planned it yet but we’ll hopefully be touring towards the end of the year. I am looking forward to going out and touring it - it’s a musician’s album. My band love it; they can’t wait to show off, and nor can I!” Paloma Faith’s new album A Perfect Contradiction is out now, on RCA Records.

Frank

In a beautifully perverse move, brand new British comedy, Frank, stars superstar thespian Michael Fassbender, but he spends the entire film wearing a giant papier mache head. So unless somebody told you, you wouldn’t have a clue it was him. That surreal decision makes perfect sense when you actually watch Frank, a very loose and very odd take on the life of Chris Sievey, whose childlike alter ego Frank Sidebottom was a cult hero on the live comedy circuit and whose artistic disciplines moved from music to live comedy to art to being really silly for the sake of it. It’s actually Domnhall Gleeson who ‘stars’ in the film, playing a fairly untalented musician who finds himself mired in the crazy world of a band called The Soronprfbs and their leader Frank a man who showers with a plastic bag over his massive fake head and eats through a feeding tube. The script was penned by Jon Ronson, a former cohort of Sievey/Sidebottom, who instead of going the traditional biopic route has taken this altogether stranger tack, something which would have no doubt pleased Sievey himself. With some pleasingly bizarre bonding exercises that involve the band punching each other and some cheeky digs at social networking, Frank is a joy of a movie that comes very close to capturing the ‘anything goes’ creativity of the real Frank Sidebottom.

Under The Skin

Starred Up

The Double

Nine years since he last made a film, Brit director and Nottingham Trent graduate, Jonathan Glazer returns with his most challenging work yet. A deliciously weird take on the cult Michel Faber novel, Under The Skin follows the story of an alien seductress prowling the streets of Glasgow. Said seductress is played by Scarlett Johansson, a name sure to attract a number of audience members to a film that will otherwise utterly baffle and disturb them. Which can only be a good thing.

There have been a hell of a lot of British prison flicks over the years, so you really have got to have something special if you’re going to attempt to make a new one. Director David Mackenzie certainly has that in the form of ex Skins star Jack O’Connell, here pulling off a career making performance as a troubled teenage inmate moved to an adult prison, where his own father is incarcerated. Expect shivvings, riots, lots of glaring and some rather tasty language.

Jesse Eisenberg stars along Jesse Eisenberg in Richard Ayoade’s second feature, a charming take on the Dostoevsky novel about a man named Simon who encounters his brash doppelganger James, who soon starts to inveigle his way into the good graces of Hannah, the woman (Mia Wasikowska) that the much meeker Simon was looking to woo. Keep your eyes peeled for a very rare cameo from Brass Eye and Day Today legend Chris Morris, Ayoade’s one time co-star in The IT Crowd.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Vampire Academy

Maleficent

The amazing rebooted franchise decides to ditch restraint and go all out supervillain on us, offering not one but three evil chaps to take on Andrew Garfield’s webshooter – Paul Giamatti as The Rhino, Jamie Foxx as Electro and Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin. Endless trailers have pretty much revealed the whole story already, but there’s no point complaining. There will be Spider-Man movies from now until the apocalypse. Get used to it.

Gabriel Byrne was in The Usual Suspects. Now he’s in this, a lame high school flick where all the students are vampires and have fights and kiss each other and stuff. The director made Mean Girls, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this will be funny and subversive. It will instead appear in cinemas for a week or two and then find its natural home on various illegal download sites, where people will post badly spelt comments about how the picture quality is really good.

The “Sleeping Beauty” tale is told from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent played by Angelina Jolie in full gothic fairy tale garb; horns and all. This new take on the classic fairy tale and Disney movie looks at the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse young Princess Aurora. Expect an epic adventure akin to the likes of The Hobbit and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobethis has the potential to be the film of the summer.

Everyone’s Talking About: 34 Windsor St

57

We’ve been hearing an awful lot lately about a new village restaurant that’s breaking all the rules and challenging the idea that to eat well you need to eat in the city. Not true, it seems as 34 Windsor Street is challenging conventions and bring a taste of the big city into Burbage. Created by Zeffy Thompson - who boasts an impressive track record in hospitality from some of the finest establishments in the North West - and Head Chef Sam Owen, the restaurant’s aim is simple: to showcase their passion for food in an informal, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere - it’s “fine food but not fine dining” although, to be fair, the menu does seem very fine indeed with starters such as Pressed pork collar, salt baked pineapple and asian spices and Venison haunch with salt baked celeriac, grain risotto and winter greens. When are we going? A Celebration 170 Years in the Making

58 Ever wondered what 170 years looks like? The School of Art & Design at NTU have brought together more than 100 artworks from its alumni in a new exhibition that illustrates just that, demonstrating the impact of the school on the visual arts and creative industries nationally and internationally. The opening event of Since 1843: In the Making, which celebrates the school’s 170th anniversary, was attended by an audience of almost 800, comprising many of the exhibitors, alumni of the School, regional dignitaries and professional contacts from right across the creative industries, including Damon Albarn, whose parents met whilst studying Art at the university in the 1960s. The Exchange Turns Three The Exchange has been at the heart of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter since 2011 and they recently celebrated this three-year landmark with a very British extravaganza. The birthday festivities ran throughout the day, starting with a vintage tea party complete with bunting, chintzy teapots, free tea and a birthday cupcake for every customer. The bar, found opposite Curve Theatre has always been a champion of local bands, and as the evening set in, guests were invited for a drink on the house whilst bands warmed up the crowd ready for the main act of the night. The Rolling Stones Now then took to the stage and rocked the crowd in The Exchange’s quirky cosy cellar well into the night. REVIEWED:THE WHITE PEACOCK

60

The White Peacock, nestled at the root of Leicester’s leafy New Walk has already garnered itself a reputation for quality fine dining with an unpretentious atmosphere, even though it only opened its doors to the public in December. SIXTYNINE degrees’ Kevin Urquhart decided to see what all the fuss was about and was rewarded with one of the best meals he’s had in the city for a very long time - and he’s a picky so-and-so...

The eight course tasting menu helpfully suggests eight courses, but if there is anything on the menu that you are not au fait with, or simply don’t enjoy (scallops, on behalf of my partner), they are happy to explain, or suggest an alternative; the aim is to make this an unforgettable experience for the diner so they’re not going to make you eat something you don’t want! Before we knew it, our first course had arrived; a silky smooth Goats Cheese mousse with cherry tomato, basil, pine nuts and a miniature parmesan crisp, the sweetness of the basil and tomato cutting through the cheese’s tang beautifully- a perfect start. I don’t get the chance to eat a lot of fish at home, as the other half has a childish aversion to it all, so course two was a great chance for me to enjoy the seared fillet of halibut with chorizo gnocci and langoustine essence. It was easily the tastiest fish I’ve ever had and one I’m hoping is offered as a full-sized course on my next visit. A crisp cold glass of citrusy Cintalo from Portugal accompanied it perfectly. Our next course was a collection of Gressingham Duck which arrived in a variety of fabulous forms; a delicious fried samosa, a chilled terrine and a rich, thick mousse. A salad of sweet mangos, mandarins and slithers of radish transported our tastebuds to the white sands of the Caribbean and complemented the richness of the duck. www.69-degrees.co.uk

Only four dishes in and it was time to go up a belt notch and time for more fish; Yellow Fin Tina with sharp pickled vegetables and a sweet chilli and soy vinaigrette. The tuna was cooked beautifully, melting in the mouth and, although not normally a fan of Chardonnay, the accompanying El Camino bloomed in the glass with the flavours of peaches and cream.

one of the best meals he’s had in the city for a very long time

It’s little wonder that The White Peacock is capturing so many imaginations. The creation of well-known local chef Phillip Sharpe, (who cut his teeth and won numerous awards as Head Chef at the city’s Hotel Maiyango) the restaurant’s aim is to offer a little bit of ‘Affordable Luxury’ to the city’s dining community. That is, to combine unique and high-quality, locally-farmed food and drink in a convivial atmosphere. And what better way to gain an insight into the chef’s ideology by sampling the eight course tasting menu, priced at a reasonable £45 per head.

For us, the mousse was a little too rich when sampled with the accompanying chargrilled brioche although the depth of flavour in isolation was good.

As a welcome interlude, our fifth dish was a zingy passionfruit and mango sorbet- perfect for refreshing the palate. This truly was an exceptional taste experience and our sixth dish continued to surpass expectations; Roasted fillet of beef with a smoked parsnip puree, wild mushrooms and shallots. Even though this is a tasting menu the portions are not unsubstantial and although rapidly filling up, the medium rare cooked beef and the dauphinoise stack served beside it were demolished in record time. It was at this point we really did need a break before course number seven; a platter of puddings including a sumptuous rose panacotta, scrumptious chocolate fondant with salted ice cream, a glossy chocolate orange mousse with a real depth of flavour and a divine crème brulee served in a vintage (miniature) school milk bottle. I’m especially sweet-toothed and a bit of a pudding connoisseur, and this really did live up to its savoury predecessors, hence a complete demolition job by me. At this stage, my sugary greed came back to bite me and I had to admit defeat in cancelling course number eight from the kitchens; a selection of British cheeses; the idea of which just pushed me over the edge. As full as I was, my next visit to The White Peacock was already being planned in my head as i waddled to the car; the food there and the service is just so good. You don’t have to go the whole hog and plump for the tasting menu; enjoy two or three courses from the a la carte selection and experience a truly unique dining experience in the city- just make sure you book first- word is spreading! Highly Recommended

The BOBS are Back! The Best of Broad Street Awards were back bigger than ever in early 2014, honouring the swankiest hotels, most refined bars and everything in between. The awards are now in their ninth year and celebrate the hard work of venues, individuals and teams that make Birmingham’s Golden Mile the city’s premier entertainment area with a glittering ceremony at the ICC. This year’s event saw the Hyatt Regency and The Pickled Piglet win big, scooping two awards apiece, with the Library of Birmingham, perhaps unsurprisingly running away with Best Overall Venue. SPECIAL FEATURE

CASUAL DINING AT ITS BEST AT COAST TO COAST Offering an authentic flavour of the USA, the SIXTYNINE degrees team had a craving for some all American favourites and headed down to Leicester’s Highcross Shopping Centre to Coast to Coast, the American restaurant and bar that offers diners a great venue and excellent food and drink all year round. The ideal destination for any occasion, Coast to Coast is casual dining at its best with guests experiencing a gastronomic adventure from east to west coast America, with dishes and cocktails inspired by recipes from across the continent. Authentic décor completes the experience with leather booth-seating, dark wood tables, maps of the Lincoln Highway and classic US memorabilia on the walls. Open throughout the day from breakfast through to dinner, the diverse menu means there will be something for everybody and as we sat down for a proper look, our super friendly server took us through all the options as we sipped an ice cold glass of Root Beer and homemade lemonade. Being a chilly day and wanting to immerse ourselves in the Americana of the restaurant we opted for a bowl of delicious chicken and sweetcorn chowder; wonderfully warming and moreish thanks to it being served in the traditional oven baked cobb roll- perfect! Keeping with the warming theme, a side of mac n cheese was the first of our main course options to arrive and was closely followed by a BBQ board: a real feast with large chicken wings, succulent hand cut ribs, hand battered tiger prawns

and mini Cumberland sausages served with homemade slaw, fresh rocket and slow roasted tomatoes. The mac n cheese came with added smoked bacon and was heaven in a bowl- we are definitively reordering this- and it was a great accompaniement to the board filled with great tasting, good quality meats.

COAST TO COAST COMES TO BRINDLEY PLACE BIRMINGHAM

My dining partner and colleague decided to plump for the signature Coast to Coast burger and let out an audible gasp of surprise as the mountain of food arrived at our table. Two 6oz burgers sandwiched together with melted cheese and topped with barbecue pulled pork, more cheese, crispy bacon, mayonnaise, tomatoes, onions, rocket and dill pickle. Drizzling down the side like a waterfall of naughtiness was barbecue and philly cheese sauce. Nestled beside the burger, egging us on, was a bucket of fries just waiting to be dipped in all that sauce. The burger was a taste sensation, a little sweet with all of that barbecue sauce but the pulled pork added a delicious smokey taste. A nice touch was the option of normal skinny fries or sweet potato friesnaturally we had both! You can’t finish an American inspired meal without an American baked cheesecake so we opted for a slice of the traditional baked vanilla and the indulgent peanut butter cheesecake – each one a dream with the peanut butter option winning the prize as the most satisfying for sweet tooths. The food was great, the service friendly and the atmosphere relaxed and informal in the authentic feeling dining room. We just can’t wait to visit in the evening to take advantage of their amazing cocktail menu. Make mine a Key Lime Pie Martini! Pitcher & Piano is Reborn

Recently refurbished, Pitcher & Piano Nottingham re-opened its doors this February to host the mother of all parties. New additions include a central island bar, circular booth seating and poseur-height communal tables for chatter and celebrations. The launch attracted the city’s most stylish crowd who were treated to a sample of on-trend dishes (gourmet hotdogs anyone?), as well as the liquid luxury that is their extensively creative cocktail list. LAST WORD Hairspray is without doubt one of the stand out hits of musical theatre to come out of Broadway in the last few years and it’s set up camp at Curve this spring. SIXTYNINE degrees’ Jonathan Fraser caught up with ex Eastenders star, David Witts, who plays heart-throb Link Larkin in Paul Kerryson’s production of this feel good show. I first meet David at the start of rehearsals. He’s tired; “I’m going out running at around 10pm every night and at that point I’m sort of ready for bed.” David, you see, is running the London Marathon and with a heavy rehearsal schedule of 10am to 8pm, is finding it hard to find the energy to train; “I’m so knackered at the end of the day, but once we start the daily shows, I’ll be in a solid routine. The rehearsal schedule for a show as big as Hairspray was always going to be full on; for those unfamiliar with the musical, Hairspray tells the big, bold, bright and beautiful story of ‘pleasantly plump’ Tracey Turnblad and her wish to dance on TV with ‘The Nicest Kids in Town’. Set in 60’s Baltimore USA, Kerryson’s version of the show is inspired by the Travolta remake as opposed to the more subversive original and deals with the quest for racial integration. But it’s far from heavy; it’s camp with a Capital C. “The dancing has been a real challenge for me; it’s definitely not easy for someone like me. I mean, I’ve always acted and sang; I’m what they call a double threat, not a triple”, he laughs before continuing “I mean it will be absolutely fine but everyone else seems to pick up the moves straight away…they’re shown them the dance once and they’re straight there with it. I’m more like ‘whoa, whoa, slow that down!’ But that’s an exciting challenge and then once I get that experience I don’t need to worry when other roles come up and they say ‘Aww, you’ve got to be a dancer. It’s fine because I’ve had this amazing learning experience.” David is very focused on the future of his career and how he wants it to develop. He first got the acting bug at school. “I think I was about 14 when my drama teacher sat me down and said, ‘You know what, mate, this is realistic for a career,’ so that’s when I started training with the National Youth Music Theatre”. From there, David got himself an agent and started working professionally in the industry. “I ended up doing a show called ‘The Voice of Tomorrow,’ which was basically a showcase for out of work actors! From then things started to snowball, although he laughingly admits, “I’ve played some pretty empty theatres.” “I remember one where we were in an auditorium which would seat around 500 as part of one of those ‘from Hollywood to Broadway’ type shows - so all the songs you know your Nan would like and there was about 13 people in the audience. That was definitely one of those moments in your career when you go, ‘Oh God’. Thankfully though ticket sales at Curve are going strong and Hairspray is set to be another success like Chicago, which I saw and thought was fantastic!” www.69-degrees.co.uk

So how do you pull yourself back from that as an actor and keep motivated? “Well you just get through it. As much as there are moments where you’re down in the dumps it beats working for a living! What I mean is there are people doing real jobs; important jobs, people saving lives, so to then have the audacity as an actor to say it’s so hard? No, that’s not me. I don’t think you should ever feel like its work, you should never feel ‘Urgh, I’m going into work’. I don’t know any of my friends that have it so good as I do, in terms of wanting to go to work and enjoying it.” It wasn’t long before David moved on from small shows and tours to bigger productions before landing the role of Joey Branning in EastEnders – the role that catapulted him into the homes of millions ever night; “It all happened so quickly. There wasn’t really time to think about it. I was actually on a job when I went in for the audition and they offered it to me in the afternoon. I started

the next week so I didn’t have time to realise how quickly everything was changing.” David stayed in the show for around eighteen months, his last episode airing on Boxing Day. The role of Link Larkin in Hairspray is his first role since. “What a treat,” he laughs as I mention his headliner position on the poster behind us. “To be honest coming from EastEnders, particularly the part I played - a cockney wise boy - people don’t realise you’re more than that. Coming to Curve which, as a venue, is very credible, is much better than being involved in something really commercial just to rake the money in. I’m really looking forward to working on Hairspray, as it’s a completely new production rather than just slotting into a show that is already running.” So what’s in-store after Hairspray for David? “Ah, that’s the question! I like to keep my cards quite close to my chest, but there are a couple of things that are really exciting. I need to carve the right sort of path for myself; Curve legitimises me as a musical theatre performer just as having done EastEnders legitimises me as a TV actor. Who knows, films sound interesting!” Until the time he hits the Big Screen, catch him on the Curve Big Stage until April 5th.

Hairspray is at Curve, Leicester until 5th of April. For more information or to book tickets visit www.curveonline.co.uk
