SHAVER SAVER

10

In the summer everyone loves to be waxed, shaved and delipated (is that a word? You know what we mean) to the max but the harsh treatments can leave their marks on our skin. Shaving rashes, ingrowing hairs and redness can be irritating and embarrassing, particularly in bikini areas. To prevent shaving side effects, try Aussie brand Nads’ Ingrow Solution, with calming and slight antiseptic properties, applied after shaving/ waxing, the solution halts redness in its tracks. Great for other slightly inflamed skin conditions, it can even help those little red bumps on your upper arms. A bathroom cabinet must-have. £10.49 from Boots www.boots.com

RIGHT HAIR, RIGHT NOW WITH TONI&GUY Ah Summer. It’s all about bathing in the sun, dancing in fields, and jetting off somewhere sweltering to work on your tan. The one downside though to the long hot days and crazy nights is that without proper protection they can wreak havoc on your hair. We talk to Jon Levy from TONI&GUY Leicester to ensure your hair stays shining along with the sun this summer. FESTIVAL FABULOUS Keeping your hair looking flawless after 24-hour-partying and kipping in a tent is no mean feat. Fret not, festival-goers, there are ways to make sure your hair won’t give up before the final act hits the stage. “Try a spritz of temporary colour – the Label M Colour Sprays (£9.95) are easy to apply and just wash out – try Pink on blonde hair or Purple on brunettes. ”

Cocktails A Go-Go Got room for a Pat Butcher-esque front room bar? No? Well never fear another 80s classic is BACK – fortunately a more stylish version of the Hostess Trolley – it enables you to keep your cocktail ingredients to hand wherever you are in the house or garden. Perfect for parties, BBQs, dinner with mates or, let’s be frank, just when you can’t be arsed to move from the sofa. This fab camp gold version is £195 from Oliver Bonas www.oliverbonas.com.

Also, if you’re not quite brave enough to linger in festival showers then Label M’s Dry Shampoo (£11.50, also available in Brunette) is perfect for quick rejuvenation or Resurrection Dust (£12.25, also available in Brunette) adds instant volume. Travel in Style You wouldn’t step into the Spanish sun without protecting your skin from UV rays, and your hair deserves the same TLC. Keep styles simple with loose up dos that keep you cool in the heat and don’t require much teasing, preening, or straightening. Jon recommends a combination of damage prevention and post-holiday treatment; “The combination of UV rays, salty sea water, and chlorine can damage your hair and lighten your locks, especially in colour treated hair, making protection key to fabulous pool-side style.” “Keep your hair covered with a wide brimmed hat or a boho scarf, and treat your hair to a repair and deep condition. All our Label M products have a UV filter to prevent damage, and what’s more they all come in travel sizes so you can slip them in your handbag or suitcase.” KEEPING COLOUR Everyone loves to go lighter for summer but Jon recommends being careful with your colour. “Blonde is one that can go wrong if applied incorrectly. The new Blondor colour range from Wella is fab, gentle with professional results and available in a wide range of blondes from natural tones to the on-trend platinums and silvers. The colours are also available to buy meaning you can be sure of your colour even if you top it up at home.”

SEARCH LAUNCHES FOR URBAN DANCE SUPERSTARS OF THE FUTURE The search is now on to find the region’s top urban dance talent as Midlands Best Dance Crew is launched for its 2014 competition. The X-Factor-style dance-off for street dance groups has been running since 2010 and has produced winners that have gone on to feature in the finals of Britain’s Got Talent.

This year’s competition will be held on Saturday 4th October, in an exciting evening of street dance competition in which troupes from across the Midlands compete for a £1,000 cash prize for the winning group. The event consists of performances from the shortlisted groups, plus input from the expert panel of judges, which includes major names in urban dance and choreography such as Supple Nam (has worked with Beyonce and Madonna and was Creative Director on Sky1’s Got to Dance, Britain’s Next Top Model and So You Think You Can Dance), Andi Vega (international award winning dancer and choreographer) and Gemma Hoddy (choreographer for the likes of the MOBOs, Top of the Pops, National Movie Awards and Blue Peter). Previous winners include BASE, who went on to compete on national television in Britain’s Got Talent. The competition is run by 2Funky Arts, a community-based arts group focusing on young people, and will be held at Curve Theatre. Tickets are priced at £14, £12, £10 - £2 off for concessions.

MAJESTIC CASUAL Majestic Casual representing the best of electronic music, experimental, hip-hop, indie, pop and much more, is a collection of all of those obscure remixes, oh so cool deep house tracks and unsigned acts that Shazam has never heard of. Thankfully, all of those late night internet searches for half heard tracks using badly memorised lyrics end here. Primarily an audio visual music blog on YouTube, Majestic Casual release their second incredibly good value compilation (40 tracks and 2 complete album mixes) on the 27th July via iTunes which includes audio delights and rarities from the likes of Cyril Hahn, Tourist, Chvrches, Sam Smith and Sampha. Find them on Youtube: Majestic Casual

Vijay Mistry from 2Funky Arts and the brainchild behind Midlands Best Dance Crew said “We would encourage groups from across the region to come forward and enter the competition. Not only do you get the chance to win £1,000, but the finalists all get great publicity. We have had some fantastic entrants in previous years and the standard has been sky high. This is an important platform for urban and street dancers from all sections of the community to compete and gain recognition for their skills, plus potentially turn a hobby into a lucrative career.” Joshua Pilmore from previous winners BASE said “We have so much to thank Midlands Best Dance Crew for. It gave us the profile to pursue dance as a professional career, and we are all happy working in the industry. It is a dream come true for us.” Entrants need to request an application from info@2funkyarts.co.uk, which are to be submitted by 15th August 2014. Shortlisted finalists will be announced by 24th August 2014.

Emma Brown is celebrating after receiving a double whammy of accolades over the summer. Emma, founder and owner of Emma Brown Hair in Clarendon Park, Leicester, picked up a nomination for a national business award, and then was voted the second best salon in Leicestershire in a Leicester Mercury readers’ poll.

ON A ROLL

Emma says “I can’t believe what has happened over the past few weeks. It has been a complete blur but so exciting!” The awards have been in addition to Emma Brown Hair becoming a session salon for funky Aussie brand Kevin Murphy, and achieving a Top 10 spot in UK retail sales for the brand, an amazing achievement for a relatively new suburban salon in Leicester. Best In Business Emma was delighted to have been nominated as ‘Independent Salon, Business Newcomer’ at the British Hairdressing Business Awards. The British Hairdressing Business Awards is held by the industry to recognise the entrepreneurial side of the sector in addition to the styling and creative side. Emma has been in business for 15 months on Clarendon Park Road, having converted a derelict shop unit into a state-of-the-art salon. Within six months of opening, Emma had a four week waiting list for appointments, and had to recruit additional stylists sooner than planned. Now a year later, Emma has three members of staff and is looking at expanding her business. Emma said “It is amazing to have our hard work recognised in this way. The British Hairdressing Business Awards is so prestigious and we are honoured to have been nominated.”

Very Voting Along with the national recognition of her achievements, Emma Brown Hair has also been voted one of Leicestershire’s best salons in a Facebook poll held by local newspaper the Leicester Mercury. The poll encouraged readers to nominate their favourite hair salons and send selfies to the Newsdesk. Over 70 salons were nominated, and Emma came second, an amazing achievement for a salon that has only been open a year. Emma said “We are so chuffed to have come second in the Mercury poll, and we would like to thank everyone who voted for us, and all our customers for their support.” Clarendon Park Community Emma is proud to be a part of her local community – born and bred in Clarendon Park, opening her salon there has been

A SUMMER OF SUCCESS something of a homecoming. Taking a derelict unit and transforming it into a stylish salon helped improve the look of Clarendon Park Road. Emma also participates in a range of community activities including promoting Leicester Pride on Victoria Park, styling the Miss Leicestershire pageant and participating in the Queens Road Summer Fair, at which Emma hosted some micro-ponies to demonstrate her commitment to products not tested on animals. Emma is now looking to the future and the glamorous award ceremony of the British Hairdressing Business Awards on Monday 8th September at The Lancaster, London.

She said “I’m not sure how Autumn could possibly improve on the Summer we’ve had, but here’s to the future!”

Singer, songwriter, producer, occasional rapper and all round king of the club banger, Example is back with an all new album that somehow manages to distill every amazing summer holiday you’ve ever had into twelve standalone tracks on the standard album with four additional tunes on the now obligatory deluxe edition. SIXTYNINE degrees’ Jon Fraser caught up with the man himself in a rare gap between studio and live performances to talk sport, touring, married life and what it takes to create the perfect summer album. Your schedule is absolutely mental, I looked at your website and for the next three of four months you really are all over the place! I know, I think it’s about 50 gigs for the summer. The toughest will be from 8th July because I’m doing 13 gigs in 14 days including two gigs in one night. It’ll go: Ibiza, a day off, Majorca, Croatia, South of France, T in the Park, day off, Plymouth, two gigs in Montenegro. Then it’s We Are Rockstars in Ibiza and Benicassim. I never planned for it to be that mental but what happens is I say to my live agent just say yes to every gig- let’s do 50 shows because I always worry that this could be my last year. I’m on my fifth album now, I’m 32. Everyone else seems to be in their twenties but if people see the live shows, we’ll keep it alive because the live shows are really what I exist for. I’m not here to change the world, I’m here to put on bangin’ live shows. You are really well known for being an incredible live performer. Does playing live give the biggest buzz as an artist? Totally, I’ve always enjoyed being on stage. I don’t mind being in the studio but I don’t love it. I love making music but I’m usually in and out of the studio in a few hours. What I’ve found over the years is even though I’m not selling millions of albums like some people, I tend to be bigger live so when people have chosen to take a year or two off, I’ve carried on touring and what I tend to find is people either go ‘I did really like your music but your live show blew me away so I’m now a fan’ or ‘my brother told me I should watch you because you’re wicked’ so I think the live show is what made it get to such a scale. Has there been anyone in particular that has inspired your live performances? I always loved people that had lots of swagger on stage and almost a bit of cheek. I used to watch mainly rock bands when I was a kid; the best show I’ve ever seen is Rage Against the Machine. It was purely about how the whole band were in synergy – the drummer was having it, the guitarist was having it, the bass player was having it – which is why I always say to my band ‘you’re part of the f***ing band so just let yourselves go on stage. Do what you want, there’s no rules.’ I think Tom Meighan is an incredible front man, I was at the

Kasabian gig in Leicester, it’s weird because I saw them ten years ago and I started off as a fan and then about four years ago, became mates with them and it’s just amazing to go from watching someone to then being mates with them. They’ve come through the back door to headlining Glastonbury which is what I’ve always done – people are like ‘Example’s playing Earl’s Court!’ ‘Example’s headlining – where’s that come from?’ Coz it’s not like I’m known for millions of albums like say, Metallica or Arctic Monkeys. I’ve kind of been the underdog and I’ve just been playing to my strengths in the live shows. It must really take it out of you, how do you actually relax? I like to run between six and twelve miles every other day because it keeps my mind clear. I never listen to music when I’m running; there’s always so much shit going on in my head – either songs or stress from flights or doing twenty interviews a day or worrying about the chart position. It’s the only time I get to myself really. It’s quite meditative then? Yes, definitely. I remember I started running when I was a kid because I was getting stressed with exams at school and I felt like I didn’t really have any space to myself. My dad said when he was really stressed when he was 30, he used to go running every day, about six miles a day and it really allowed him to clear his head so I started doing the same. So when do you actually get time to write? With the last album I started it in February last year, in LA and then did a bit in Australia and then I was touring all last summer, I did about 40 or 50 gigs, so whenever I have a week off I try to go to the studio for five days because I can do a song a day. For this whole album I probably wrote 20 songs to get 16 for the deluxe album so it was probably only a few days song writing to get this album done. I like to write within the space of a day and if we think that the song’s got something then we go and produce it and mix it so a lot of the stuff is done whilst I’m on tour and I’ll come back to the studio for a whole day and maybe in 12 hours we’ll have three, four, five songs. Some people like to do a slow, really drawn out process, I was always concerned that I wrote too much quickly then I read an www.69-degrees.co.uk

If you know what you’re doing and what your audience want and you know what works live, if you know what you’re good at then you shouldn’t feel too selfconscious about having to spend a week on one song. You can imagine that after almost a decade of writing songs, it comes to me quite easily. I always write songs for festivals then tweak it for radio if I have to. The new album, your fifth, feels really anthemic. Listening to it I felt like I was being taken on a journey through every amazing summer holiday I’d ever had. Yeah I wanted the songs to sound like a summer playlist or like a dance compilation so my vocal performance on every song is really different. On ‘Seen You’ I sound a bit soulful and on ‘Live Life Living’ I sound a bit more gospel, on ‘Longest Goodbye’ it’s a bit more reggae. I wanted all the songs to fit, which I think they do I terms of subject matter. All that love or hedonism or festivals or feeling high – I wanted to capture those feeling and then connect them musically. Me and my producer go through every song on the album and edit it to have drums and bass lines to tie everything together so it sounds like a complete project. The album was written for clubs and festivals but also for the poolside or the beach or BBQs. Every song on the album I wanted to feel like a moment at a festival or a moment at a party or on a beach. I think that’s why it’s the most positive album so far, ‘Playing in the Shadows’ and ‘Evolution of Man’ were so dark, they were all about therapy and hangovers and addiction and cheating on your girlfriend and lying. All my biggest songs were written about that so it’s nice to come out the other side of all that. That’s why I’m glad I gave the album such a positive title ‘Live Life Living’, I just wanted it to embody

www.69-degrees.co.uk

what I stand for which is good times. Lyrically though, I did pick up on times when you are talking about separation from partners and living without someone. Has life changed and your priorities shifted since you got married? Yeah I think that on this album I’m a lot more honest, confident and less anxious. All the songs like Live Life Living have a big positive sentiment which is, ‘I’ve seen nothing til I’ve seen you’ and ‘Can’t Face the Word Alone’, whereas on the previous albums all the songs like ‘Natural Disaster’ and ‘All My Lows’, ‘Shot Myself in the Foot Again’, ‘Crying Out For Help’ –were really about someone in need, someone who is a bit lonely. Even though those songs were quite euphoric because of the music I don’t think they were happy songs, whereas on this album, people are going to listen to it and be uplifted. Do you think you’ll ever settle down and stop touring? One day I’ll have kids and I’ll relocate to Australia when the kids are young. That’s when I’ll probably slow down and tour three months of the year but at the moment it’s more like ten months of the year. If people wanna watch me then I’ll turn up.

HOW TO PACK THE PERFECT SUMMERCASE We’ve all been there, frantically running around the house in the early hours on the night before a trip asking ourselves whether we may potentially need the winter coat (of course there’s a chance it may snow in Spain during summer; you know with climate change and all…) and what about the coral shoes, Lisa Houseman always regretted not taking them? But don’t panic, although there are many conflicting hints and tips out there SIXTYNINE Degrees Fashion Editor Sy Ann Holden has put together a Top 5 Tips guide for packing your wares this summer: 1. Preparation It’s tempting to pack for any eventuality, but the savviest packers are ruthlessly realistic and pack a capsule wardrobe. Choosing colours that work together will significantly reduce the number of items you’ll need to pack leaving you more room for wine and books…. it’s meant to be a relaxing holiday after all! 2. Luggage With restrictions on weight always seeming to catch us out, give yourself a head start and invest in a lightweight suitcase with rigid sides. Stewardess style cases on wheels are perfect for weekend breaks and carry on for the plane.

3. How to Pack Once everything is clean and pressed, lay garments flat bringing any sleeves into the centre and roll into a cylindrical shape. Rolling is my preferred method but I am yet to find a completely fail safe solution. If you’ve packed your capsule wardrobe you should have some room for wrinkle reduce spray or even a handy travel steamer…or there’s always the hanging in the bathroom whilst you take a shower method! Keep jewellery twinkling & tangle free by storing it in a separate compartment. Studded earrings can be attached to holes in your wristwatch strap and you can thread your delicate necklaces through a straw to stop them getting tangled. 4. Make Up/Toiletries Get Make Up/toiletry samples and take luggage. Okay so the 100ml and plastic frustrating but it’s reassuring to know in the pool won’t be accompanied by a shampoo foam.

them as hand bag rules are your first dip whole load of

5. Treat Yourself This is a holiday after all and it’s worth checking the facilities you already have available at your resort. They probably already have a hair dryer, beach towels, and a laundry facility on site. Follow these tips and enjoy your packing ritual this year, there’s a high chance anything you’ve forgotten can be purchased at your destination anyway including the wine!

Towie’s Bobbie in the Sirius Schlong, £10 from thesiriuscollection.bigcartel.com

Every decade has its defining moments and the 60’s has them in spades - Like the iconic ‘mini skirt,’ hemlines across men’s swimwear were shorter than ever. But the initial and enduring popularity that the short tight Speedo found amongst the space age generation, now has many of us reaching for the bucket writes SIXTYNINE Degrees Fashion Editor Sy Ann Holden.

Think of the damage of the decades that followed (anyone’s Dad in the 80’s/Hasslehof) and it’s clear why the word Speedo is now more likely to conjure images less ‘Blue Hawaii Elvis’ and more ‘Benidorm gut over pelvis.’ Oh and then there’s the most recent evolution of the trend… Whilst packing light is advisable I think we’d all prefer the TOWIE boys had found a bit more room in their case for swimwear, as they recently appeared to be papped sunbathing in their luggage tags.

Now don’t get me wrong there’s a beauty in the allencompassing reach of this unforgiving style. After 5 days a week in suits, stiff collars and ties, can you blame the man for grabbing a scrap of lycra and swaggering boldly into the sunset? Clearly this level of pea cocking and display isn’t for every man, and the rise & reign of the board short (considered curtains of shame by the sunset Speedo guy) is testament to that. But although I’m not completely sold on skimpy swim briefs, I can’t help but think boardies do have a downside…there’s surely less freedom, likely to look like a toddler if you’re less than 6ft tall and don’t even mention the ridiculous tan lines. So before you make your final swimwear choice for this season, consider the many varieties available. There’s a style to suit everyone, whether you’re a boardie, a budgie or somewhere in-between.

HOLIDAY Health

YOU’VE BEEN STICKING TO A STRICT PRE-HOLIDAY DIET IN PREPARATION FOR THE BEACH BUT WHY IS IT THAT ONCE YOU GET THERE, ALL YOUR GOOD WORK COMES UNDONE? EVE HEWITT HAS ALL THE ANSWERS; STAY SLIM THIS SUMMER BY FOLLOWING A FEW SIMPLE STEPS.

Fitness FOOD Many of us are overwhelmed by the new and interesting foods other countries have to offer and overeat whilst abroad but Elaine Magee, nutrition expert and author of 26 books about healthy eating, has these tips to avoid gaining weight whilst away. 1. Moderation is the name of the game - don’t deprive yourself of local cuisine, instead sample food rather than going overboard and feasting on it. Try limiting yourself to one treat a day. 2. Make healthy choices when eating out, even in fast food restaurants, by making small changes to the dish such as swapping sauces. Swap mayo for Dijon mustard or fatty cheeses for cream cheese. 3. Hide the mini-bar key. The temptation to splurge on overpriced snacks and drinks is all too strong when they are only a few feet away from the bed. 4. It’s more important to drink water on holiday than it is normally as you’re out in the sun and sweating more than usual. Keep bottles of water with you at all times! 5. Being on holiday is no excuse to not get your five a day, especially as fruit and veg makes you feel fuller and keep your levels of antioxidants and vitamins high so that you’re feeling your best. www.69-degrees.co.uk

We all love lazing in the sun but combat all the excess by trying to be active at least once a day. No hotel gym? No problem. Alternate lengths in the pool or a run on the beach with some of these easy exercises you can do in your room. Warm up by doing: 25 jumping jacks, 30 seconds of jogging, 10 tricep dips, 10 lunges (on each leg) and 25 jumping jacks before performing this workout as a circuit. Bodyweight squat Stand as tall as you can with your feet spread a little more than shoulder-width apart. Hold your arms out in front of you at shoulder level. Keep your torso upright and lower your body into a sitting position, keeping your abs tight. Pause for a second before pushing yourself into the starting position. Do 15 to 20 repetitions.

Hip raise Lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place your arms out to your sides, palms facing up and hold your stomach in tight. Keeping the core tight, squeeze your glutes and raise your hips so your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees. Pause for 5 seconds, keeping everything squeezed tight, then lower your body back to the floor. Do 10 repetitions. Side plank Lie on your side with your knees straight. Prop your upper body on your right elbow and forearm. Place your left hand on your left hip and squeezing your tummy in, raise your hips so your body forms a straight line from your ankles to your shoulders. With your core tight, hold this position for 30 seconds and repeat on your other arm.

Incline push-up Try placing your hands on a raised surface like a bath or a bed frame and keeping your body rigid, lower your body until your upper arms dip below your elbows. Resort to the old-fashioned press-up if you’re finding it too easy. Do 12 to 15 of these.

Reverse crunch Lie on the floor with your palms facing down. Bend your knees and lift your feet so they are up in the air. Inhale then pull your legs to your torso, rolling your hips off the floor. Exhale and slowly lower your legs to the starting position. Do 15 repetitions of these.

TAKING FITNESS TO THE EXTREME Boot Camp. Eight letters arranged in such a way that vest them with the power to strike mortal fear in the hearts of most adult humans. As the youngest – and supposedly fittest – member of the team, we sent Matt Blackwell packing to the heart of Herefordshire to explore the boundaries of fitness at a three day residential Xtreme Luxury Boot Camp. Don’t let the word ‘luxury’ throw you off the scent though; we’re not talking Tai Chi and deep breathing here, this is military-style fitness with all employees either serving or ex-serving armed forces personnel. From the moment you walk through the door you enter a disciplined environment in which the qualified instructors will push your body to its limit – and then a bit further – in the pursuit of whatever goals you came armed with. Typically, the first ‘detail’ of the day will involve running. We were treated to a four-mile ‘Battle Run’ lead by serving Royal Marine and Xtreme Boot Camps co-founder James Evans, who had us sprinting, jogging, jumping and crawling through mud, rivers, fields and over gates; all before breakfast! After fuelling up on ‘scran’ you’ll be marched outside for the morning’s exercise session, which could comprise of anything from kettle bell workouts to intense circuits, performed either in the beautiful grounds of The Colloquy or in the heated pool. Post-lunch we were given the chance to slow things down a tad with a spot of yoga and after the evening meal you may be rewarded for the day’s efforts with some free time. That is unless someone in your troop was late (and by late I mean any less than five minutes early) or failed to arrive to detail fully equipped – as I did… twice – in which case, you can expect to be worked well into the evening, squat thrusting and lunge jumping your way to trim, tight and toned perfection. Put in a shift though and you’ll earn your reward as you relax in the sauna and hot tub or indulge in one of the spa treatments provided by My Personal Sanctuary. Naturally, this level of exercise gives you an almighty appetite and come mealtimes we eagerly wolfed the clean and nutritious food that ex-RAF chef Terry placed in front of us, including a healthy selection of cereals, porridge and poached eggs for breakfast, salads and pasta for lunch, followed by a three course sumptuous feast in the evenings. As much as I abhor clichés, two of them crop up time and time again when people ask me about my boot camp experience: you get out exactly what you put in and if you skimp on effort or commitment, it’s only yourself that you’re cheating. As I boarded my train home I was struck by a feeling (and it wasn’t just muscle soreness) that I had learnt an invaluable lesson about my body’s capabilities and had uncovered a determination and unwillingness to give in that most probably stems from an inherent stubborn streak. After three days of extreme exercise I

was heading home with a huge buzz that has since motivated me to push myself beyond my natural comfort zone in everything I do. I guess the clue’s in the name really and make no mistake; Xtreme Boot Camps are not for the faint hearted, but if you’re serious about fitness, there really is no better service out there. Xtreme Boot Camps offer three, four and seven day camps starting at £495 per person. The next Xtreme Luxury Boot Camp will take place in September 2014. Go to www. xtremebootcamps.com for more information

GAME OF THRONES Just three little words: but if they mean nothing to you then you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years. And no one knows this better than Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark in the award winning series.

So how does she react when she meets someone she really admires?

The bloody fantasy drama series seems far removed from the bubbly, 17-year-old Maisie Williams we meet. Winning the role of tomboy Arya Stark at just twelve-years-old, Maisie was actually hurtling toward a career in dance, not acting. How did one turn into the other?

Arya Stark has developed a devoted following but she’s savvy enough to not let it get to her head.

“I did an improv class where I got scouted and I met my agent and we started auditioning for films. I auditioned for one movie that I didn’t get the part in, still dancing all the way along, and then my second ever audition was for Game of Thrones. It was a very accidental process which I’m actually really thrilled about.” Five years into her role as the indefatigable Arya Stark, Bristol girl Maisie is becoming accustomed to ever increasing recognition. “In the last year things have really taken off in the UK. It’s very, very exciting but also means my old life is slowly being chipped away and replaced with this new lifestyle...” This lifestyle, and the star-spotting opportunities it affords, sometimes catch the actress off guard. “I think I’m too much of a fan girl to be in this industry. I’m in the position where I can meet my idols – I can do that!”

www.69-degrees.co.uk

“What I do is I go bright red and melt into a puddle of human and get really nervous! I never really scream at someone, I tend to do the silent thing and go … ‘I love you!’”

“It’s a crazy, crazy world but I’ve kind of grown up with it and had time to get used to it I guess. I remember one day that I got up and I couldn’t get out of the house. But it’s happened very slowly and my family has been great about giving me loads of time to just relax and give me space to be myself and not have to worry about any expectations. “I’ve had a really positive experience with this world and I know that it’s sometimes not like that … I know a lot of young actors that are thrust into this sort of success and limelight and do find it overwhelming and I can completely understand why...” Maisie’s onscreen counterpart also has to grow up under some curious circumstances. Has this led to a certain affinity between actor and character? “Exactly. I mean we’ve both been put into really alien worlds. Arya thought she got this world and thought she knew what she wanted and then slowly as everything is unravelling around her she realises home is left and she’s had to grow up very quickly. There’s a lot of untrustworthy people around and this world isn’t what she once

imagined. And I feel that, trying not to put it too simply, I felt the same. I didn’t know what to expect from this world and slowly but surely I’ve realised how to act and what to say and how people will interpret things and that you’re never going to please everyone.” Perhaps this affinity with those seeking their place in the world encouraged Maisie to embark upon her role as a YouYou mentoring ambassador. The charity supports 17-21 year olds trying to find work within their chosen creative industry and Maisie recently posed for a photo-shoot to grant YouYou photography mentees valuable experience. “It was different to a lot of other shoots that don’t really cater to your personality. It really came across that they looked into the things that I like … they had researched me which sounds silly but actually makes it such a nicer atmosphere when you’re on set.” Maisie gives credit to the YouYou creative hopefuls; “they were all new to this industry and so lovely. We had so much in common and I just love the concept of it all really.” We’re hardly surprised the YouYou mentees gelled so well with Maisie. Judging from our conversation with Maisie, you’d struggle not to like her.

TARRUS RILEY

BEATS by 2Funky Arts & Disgraceland

Acclaimed Jamaican American artist Tarrus Riley is headlining his first UK tour. With a number one U.S. Billboard album and a sold out U.S tour under his belt, this artist is definitely on our radar. His Love Situation UK Summer Tour will feature tracks from his new album, as well as an impressive back catalogue of reggae tunes. Tarrus boasts over ten years worth of reggae hits, including ““She’s Royal”, “Gimme Likkle One Drop”, “Superman” and, his recent, “Dem A Watch”. His latest album “Love Situation” reached number 1 on the U.S Billboard Reggae Album Chart earlier this year. Festival regular Tarrus is an accomplished live artist who does not disappoint. Tour dates planned across the UK include The Institute, Birmingham, on Saturday 2 August, joined by renowned saxophonist Dean Fraser. There are many new, exciting artists emerging from the Midlands. The latest one-to-watch may well be Birmingham based vocalist Elektric. This 22 year old brings together old school Hip-Hop and Rn’B with Electronica, alongside a singer/ songwriter accessibility. Her mix of MCing, singing and poetry is already turning heads. Elektric’s new EP, ‘Not another love song,’ is sung from the perspective of a gay, mixed race, young British woman. Currently signed to producer Baby J, who has produced for Amy Winehouse, Estelle, Skinnyman and Dead Prez, the EP has been tweeted by the head of music for BBC Radio 1 and 1xtra. 2FUNKY ARTS

Captain Planet Feat. Brit Lauren - In the Grey (Bastard Jazz) We’ve been big fans of Captain Planet for a while now, both as an artist and also as the curator of the www.mixtaperiot.com blog which is a popular go-to for DJ’s, taste makers, and music lovers worldwide. Blending a wide range of styles (from NY hip hop, to NOLA funk, to Turkish Psychedelic, to Nigerian Afrobeat and beyond), his trademark sound has matured into a truly unique form of electronic music- bridging gaps between worldwide music diasporas as well as contemporary dance music sub-genres (house, hip hop, dubstep & breaks). In the grey is a slice of undeniable summer loveliness which should grace all of your collections as the nights draw in and we need to be reminded of the months before. https://soundcloud.com/bastardjazz/captain-planet-feat-brit-lauren-in-the-gray DISGRACELAND

RESPONSE - S.O.S / CONTROL - INGREDIENTS RECORDS

JOE - BRIDGES

‘Control’ is an epic 2 step track - beautiful in places with clever vocals talking about how we are all controlled by computers. He has a point…

Taking inspiration from the old school Joe puts imitation R&B to one side with his 11th studio album. Strong production with flawless vocals brings you tracks ‘Take It To The House’, ‘Love Undefeated’ and ‘Future Teller’. And with a little help from Kelly Rowland and 50 Cent he brings you remixes of ‘Love & Sex’ and ‘Mary Jane’, which featured on his 2012 masterpiece. Overall ‘Bridges’ fills the ever-expanding gap of quality music.

Response is back on Ingredients with one of his best releases so far; ‘Son Of Sevenless’ (SOS) is something out of nowhere! A chilling intro which sets the mood from the off with clattering drums & killer bass – this is super deep DnB.

FUNK NA CAIXA COMPILATION ALBUM

SOL 030 “MIDNIGHT EP” - BIG MAKK

Previously reported on this page, Rasterinha fuses raw beats and bass resulting in super stripped down, dirty, sex music. This compilation takes this and moves it up to the next level. Slicker production coupled with live instrumentation give the genre a more accessible appeal

Supper slow chugging house and techno may not be the first thing that you thing of when you hit the club but “Escuchen” draws you in with stripped down minimal percussion over thumping spatial beats. The deep bass line of “Midnight” will run up your spine. Both tracks are sonic journeys with long subtle builds.

WHITE FENCE - FOR THE RECENTLY FOUND INNOCENT Psychedelia has been experiencing an unexpected resurgence with bands like Toy, Telegram and Temples all waiving this paisley banner. However, few bands justify the tag apart from Tim Presley aka White Fence and his sixth album, For The Recently Found Innocent.

For The Recently Found Innocent is a dreamy summer soundtrack of swirled guitars, hazy vocals and beatnik beats. ‘Live Like That’ and ‘Sandra (When The Earth Dies’) is pure 60s sugary sweet Small Faces’ pop. Whilst ‘Anger? Who Keeps You Under’ and ‘Wolf Gets Red Faced’ jump down Syd Barrett’s rabbit hole of woozy riffs and abstract lyricism. Place the needle on the vinyl, lie back on a tapestry throw and enjoy the radiant vintage glow.

SHE KEEPS BEES - EIGHT HOUSES Eight Houses by Brooklyn duo She Keeps Bees is dirty howled blues at its very best. Singer Jessica Larrabee’s vocals are the key, oozing like treacle on opener ‘Feather Light’ and as raw as Grace Slicks’ ‘White Rabbit’ on ‘Both Sides’ . The tracks sway from wild lacerated emotion (‘Raven’) to tearful laments (’Wasichu’) for an utterly emotionally engulfing listen. Released: 26 September

COLD SPECKS – NEUROPLASTICITY Two years on from her criticallyacclaimed debut Cold Specks’ walks further away from the light to reveal more of her ‘doom soul’ on second album, Neuroplasticity. The ritualistic chords of opener ‘A Broken Memory’ march you headlong into the record’s pounding beats, bellowed vowels and unnerving minor chords with the darkness only punctuated by the ethereal, ‘Quiet Chill’. An album not for the faint hearted.

LA ROUX - TROUBLE IN PARADISE Five years since La Roux’s Grammy winning eponymous debut and Elly Jackson returns for Trouble In Paradise, an album that’s sadly indicative of its namesake. The problem lies in the production that robs the tracks of their power. The Casio synths of ‘Let Me Down Gently’ and ‘Kiss n Tell’ has Elly rendered to a bargain basement 80s Madonna. Time for a Holiday. Released: now

TWIN ATLANTIC – GREAT DIVIDE Three years and 300 gigs on from their debut Free, Twin Atlantic are back with their eyes firmly on the prize of making it Big Time. Produced by Jacknife Lee (U2,REM) and inspired by life on the road, Great Divide’s idea of rock is a half a shandy and staying up past the midnight. It’s pop best reserved for the tweens. Released: 18 August

FESTIVAL OF FOXES With three hit singles, a Grammy award, an appearance in the new series of Dr Who and a summer full of festival appearances ahead of her, we talk to FOXES about what makes the perfect festival experience. Were you brought up with the whole festival experience? Yeah totally, I remember being on my mum’s back and her carrying me around festivals. I feel like I grew up at things like that. I had a sort of very free childhood; my mum was at Glastonbury this year which was really hilarious, she stayed out later that I did so that was quite funny. What is it your Mum who got you interested in music then? Well my mum and sister were really into people like Massive Attack and Portishead and that ethereal type music, and Patty Smith I absolutely adored growing up so I think those people definitely inspired me. My mum and my sister really wanted me to pursue music which was really nice. Are there any performances from back then you can look back and feel inspired you? I think Beyonce was incredible at Glastonbury. I saw Massive Attack on the Sunday night at Glastonbury which for me was just, you know, really dreamy, I just think it’s effortless and it’s beautiful, and it’s just the most incredible music to see at a festival because it really takes because it’s just so natural and free. I found that really inspiring. So you’re performing at this year’s V Festival. Yes and I am very excited as I have never been to V. Lots of my friends have been so I’ve heard lots of good things about it but I’ve never had a chance to go. I’m very, very excited; it’s an amazing roster to be on. Festivals are big, big crowds to perform to, do you find that a bit intimidating? They are but I think the festival crowds are always the best ones, because there really is an energy at festivals. People have saved up for these tickets, I remember doing it myself growing up, and you get there and you just let it take you. I just think there’s no bad vibes at festivals, everyone’s in such a good mood, they really are the best crowds to play to. They really are very welcoming. It’s always good fun. Do you have a particular routine before you go on stage and perform? I guess routine wise before I go on stage I do like a headstand, which is weird. It gets the blood to your head, and there’s something really energising about doing a headstand, and it’s generally fun! I always get a speaker out and put 90s rave music on and jump about a bit, and then I’m on stage! What can we expect from your set at this year’s V Festival? There’s one cover thrown in, I think it’s always good to do a cover at festivals. If you’re gonna do a cover anywhere I think festivals are the place to do it! Whenever I’m at festivals I always want to hear something that I know very well that’s done differently, so it’s always quite a nice little surprise. Other than that it will be my singles and tracks that people can hopefully sing along to and know the words to, which I still find mental! Is there anyone on there you’re looking forward to seeing yourself at this year’s V Festival? I think it’s always more exciting to see the newer acts, so I guess I’ll be checking out that side of things. Festivals are really hard to plan anyway; it’s quite nice to be surprised when you’re at a festival! I stumbled upon St Raymond at a festival and I was like ‘this is absolutely incredible’. I think I’ll stumble along and see something I didn’t expect to see which I think is always a fun thing to do, that’s the beauty of festivals I think.

Foxes is performing at this year’s V Festival sponsored by Virgin Media on the 16th-17th August at Hylands Park and Weston Park.

Daytimes will never be the same as Maiyango restaurant is now open all day, bringing a new luxurious breakfast, brunch and lunch offer to the city centre. With typical Maiyango creativity, the menus will tickle the tastebuds of the fussiest foodie with great menu ideas teamed with top quality ingredients. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS Now open from 7am weekdays, 8am on weekends, for Breakfast, Coffee & Bakery items (try a latte and the Banana Loaf with Fig Compote for the perfect start to the day or a fabulous elevenses all from £2.25) are all available in the luxurious setting of Maiyango restaurant, which creates an oasis of Arabian Nights style calm in the bustling city centre. An ideal start to the day for a special occasion, a recovery session for the Morning After or just a decadent weekend lazy breakfast, there is something for something for everyone on the menu. And what’s even better it the Brunch menu is served until 2 pm so there is no need to get up too early! Kick off with a fresh homemade smoothie for a shot of vitamin goodness – our favourite was banana, vanilla and blossom honey (£2.95). If you are a fan of a substantial Breakfast (or in need of a hangover cure), we would recommend the Huevos Rancheros (£7.95) with jalapeno and tomato compote, two fried free range eggs, tortilla chaff’s, refried beans and sour cream (chorizo is optional) – combined with the build-your-own version of the Bloody Mary (but with oriental spiced gin) this is a guaranteed hangover cure for the most decadent night out. LUXURIOUS LUNCH Served until 5pm and ideally located next to Highcross Leicester for a pre- or mid-shopping lunch, Maiyango’s midday menu has its trademark ‘world cuisine’ flavour. Our favourites were the ‘Around the World Taster Plates’ (£6.95), a fab way of lining the stomach to accommodate one of the famous Maiyango cocktails. Match the Asia or Far East Plates with a Peach, Raspberry & Vanilla Mojito (yes, it is as good as it sounds) or an Oriental Martini. The rest of the menu is structured in traditional form – Small Plates (starters or snacks), Large Plates (mains) and desserts, but refreshingly with one price regardless of choice. Small plates are £5.95, large plates are £11.95, desserts are £4.95 and sides are £2.45, so really good value for a quality lunch. Our favourites included the Seared Tuna Club sandwich (pictured) with smoked salmon, vine tomatoes, chipotle mayo, spiced root vegetables and celeriac slaw, and the Crisp Sweet Potato Bhuna Roll with lentil dhal and cherry tomato and chilli jam. For meat eaters, the Moroccan Lamb Burger is truly a taste sensation or for a lighter flavour the lemon grass and chilli infused salmon with coconut broth won’t have you dozing at your desk mid-afternoon. To finish, chocolate lovers should definitely try the Warm Chocolate and Chilli Brownie with coconut sorbet (pictured) or perfect for the Summer, the Maiyango Special Ice Cream Sundae (we won’t spoil the surprise) will cool anyone down.

The new Wednesday offering sees them recreate the sophisticated vibe of The Living Room with chilled music; the perfect ambience for those looking for a civilised night out. From Thursdays through to Saturdays why not pre book yourself a booth and Join the Cliquot? Sink a bottle of the famous yellow label Veuve Cliquot champagne, with bottles priced at just £50 and £60 for rose. Chin Chin. Drinking on an empty stomach always gives us the munchies, so why not try out their new tapas menu; Mediterranean light bites and delicious delicacies are the order of the day and are a perfectly picky way of dining out with friends. Four split floors give life to four very different characters ranging from the upbeat basement bar to the intimate lounge on the middle floor. There’s even an outside area to enjoy. One thing all four floors share however is a selection of niche sprits and unique cocktails that include lots of fresh fruit, smoked infusions and other wonderful concoctions- a mixologist’s dream! The Turkey Café is also one of the few places in Leicester to serve a homemade afternoon tea. You can even swap the tea for a cheeky cocktail, beer or why not enjoy a glass of processco? HILTON GARDEN INN SUMMER BBQ

65 Leicester got its groove recently in aid of the city’s hospice charity LOROS with the month long Soul Relief campaign. Activities included numerous ‘soul’ themed events across the city, and culminated in a special fundraising Soul Night at Bowstrings Bar. This year’s World Cup themed annual Hilton Garden Inn Summer BBQ kicked summer off in style for over 100 city VIPS. The exclusive event featured sporting activities, team quizzes, and fab cocktails for all. The event managed to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, the Hilton Garden Inn’s charity of the year, while showcasing some of the hotel’s fantastic new facilities to some of the city’s top business people. Nicola Underhill, General Manager of the Hilton Garden Inn, said ‘‘it was a great success, we are really proud of our great menu and the City Café is proving increasingly successful.’’ Hilton Garden Inn, 1 Brunswick Square, Brindley Place, Birmingham B1 2HW. Located in Nottingham’s historic Lace Market, the recently restored Pitcher & Piano, housed in a deconsecrated church with its original stonewalls and dramatic stained glass windows, is one of our favourite interior spaces in which to unwind over a cocktail or two. But what of its outdoor space? SIXTYNINE Degrees’ Lilith Hunt Sheppard decided to sample the new summer menu ‘al fresco’.

Organised by a collective of local businesses, Soul Relief aimed to raise £5,000 for LOROS during the 4 week awareness campaign. As of going to print the total raised stood at £4300. The businesses, which include 2Funky Arts, Femi Health & Beauty, Wildcat energy drinks and the Soul Heaven event, have all been touched by LOROS in one way or another. For more information, visit Soul Relief on Facebook, @soulreliefuk on Twitter or to donate text Soul80 to 70070 to donate £1 or visit http://www.justgiving.com/Soul-ReliefLeicester.

SOUL RELIEF

Eat Al Fresco at Pitcher & Piano

The Pitcher & Piano has always attracted a stylish crowd and now with the launch of the new Mediterranean inspired menu the Lace Market bar and restaurant is sure to attract its fair share of foodies too. Sitting down outside with a chilled glass of wine ( the updated wine list is excellent and feature bottles from a very reasonable £18) as the sun was shining I decided to sample the watermelon and feta salad. Beautifully presented on a base of watermelon, the salad included lettuce, olives, feta and olive oil dressing. The refreshing combination of watermelon and the feta cheese made this Mediterranean salad the perfect lunch option at the appetising cost of only £8.50. The second dish I tried was a BBQ chicken and chorizo flatbread with roasted garlic, crème fraîche and rocket. Made using fresh dough, the bread was light and perfectly cooked, with the tender chunks of chicken and spicy garlic chorizo making a delicious addition to the flatbread base. At just £8.75 this flatbread can be enjoyed individually as a main or shared in a group (but once you’ve tried it you might wish you’d ordered it all to yourself). Inside or outside, whether you’re looking for a relaxing spot for lunch or a buzzing venue for dinner, Nottingham’s Pitcher & Piano is definitely worth checking out.

The Midlands haven’t always been top of the list when it comes to premium cuisine, but that’s all changing. Birmingham now has the most Michelin starred restaurants outside London and a new generation of trendy restaurants and gastro-pubs has popped up around the county, and along with that comes the young talent. SIXTYNINE Degrees talks to chef James Johnson, 21, who personifies this new generation of creative talent in the Midlands. How long have you been in the catering business? I joined 34 Windsor St in Burbage, just before it opened in May 2013. It’s been amazing – I’ve been working alongside Head Chef Sam Owen to create dishes for the menu using our distinctive blend of local ingredients and contemporary takes on classic dishes. To be mentored by Sam, who loves foraging for raw ingredients and growing his own veg, has been a fab opportunity.

MASTER CHEF How would you describe your work at 34 Winsdor St?

I’m currently Junior Sous Chef at 34 Windsor St, but ideally I’m looking to move up the ladder pretty quickly. Being exposed to contemporary modern British cuisine using both classical and modern cooking techniques on a constant basis, is great training for moving to the next level. You have recently qualified for an industry award for upcoming talent. Tell us about it. I was entered into the Pro Chef Challenge, an industry scheme that encourages young talent, by Sam and restaurant owner Zeffy Thompson. The six contestants, including me, had to cook certain dishes under

www.69-degrees.co.uk

scrutiny of the judges (which included Mark Greenaway, who has appeared on The Great British Menu amongst others and was awarded 3 Rosettes for his restaurant 12 Picardy Place) and then we were judged. It is quite an intimidating process – Like Masterchef but worse! I worked really hard and was just thrilled when I won the heat. I now move onto the finals later this year.

The Pro Chef Challenge competition is organised by visionarydining.com and encourages budding chefs to excel in the industry, the organisation said of your skills “A star just came into focus for sure.” How does that make you feel?

There are lots of great flavours there and it shows off a variety of techniques. What’s next for James Johnson?

What is your signature dish?

The national finals of the Pro Chef Challenge to be held in November in Edinburgh, so I’ll be preparing for that. It is bound to be an exciting challenge and I can’t wait to design my menu for the competition. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

The dish I produced for the competition is a favourite of mine - roasted sirloin of beef, wild garlic bon bon, ricotta gnudi, shallot and thyme puree, wild garlic crisp and flowers and watercress emulsion.

For more information please visit www.34windsorst.com, @34WindsorSt on Twitter, search 34 Windsor St on Facebook or call 01455 234342 for a reservation.

I just can’t believe it – to have experienced and talented people talk about me in those terms is unbelievable.
