Nottingham is officially one of the UK’s top 5 creative cities* and it’s been a hub for creativity, design and innovation for centuries. Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art & Design is one of the most established in the UK, with roots dating from 1843, and it’s been a central part of the creativity in Nottingham ever since. Students of all areas of Art and Design at NTU take part in a wide range of events, projects, exhibitions, work experience and activities in and around Nottingham; many develop highly successful careers based on the creative journeys that start in the city. We asked them what they’ve been up to recently and what’s happening soon. Here’s a snapshot of some of the things they told us... Thanks must also got to our cover stars, Fashion Design students Ebony Goodman and Adnan Ebo. Photography by NTU graduate David Baird. We hope that you find this magazine an inspirational guide to the start of an amazing career in Art and Design. This magazine has been put together with help from NTU’s Art and Design students, Jonathan Fraser and Mike Raven from SIXTYNINE degrees Magazine, Maggie Burnett and Emily Morris from NTU.

2009 and designed by award winning architects Caruso St John, the Nottingham Contemporary was built on one of the oldest sites in Nottingham. At over 3000 square metres, the space is one of the largest contemporary art centres in the UK. The distinctive concrete walls feature an embedded lace patterning which was based on designs found in a time capsule on the site.

Nottingham is home to Raleigh Bikes and Boots PLC.

Iconic menswear fashion designer, Paul Smith, was born in Nottingham, in 1946. After spending evening classes learning tailoring, he opened his first shop on Byard Lane in 1970. Although the brand now also has an impressive flagship store on Low Pavement, the original shop is still there, tucked away, but definitely worth a visit!

The world’s first cotton mill was set up here in 1767, in an area now known as the Lace Market. Nottingham also famously became the lace capital of the world in the 1800’s.

Alice graduated from BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2012. She is a member of the One Thoresby Street art collective in the city and has a studio there. “There were many opportunities on the course for me, including an internship at Nottingham Contemporary during my second year. The tutors particularly encouraged students to go to outside events in places such as One Thoresby Street; this is how I became familiar with artist-led spaces in the city before graduating. The atmosphere here feels supportive from the word go. I would really recommend staying around in Nottingham when you graduate. It feels as if there is always something happening here. I have found it very feasible to have a job part-time and work in my studio with time to develop my practice. In collaboration with Nottingham-based artist Tracey McMaster, I am developing a way for video artists to find a network of similar practitioners and show work newly made or in progress, to build a supportive structure for artists to continue gaining feedback on their work.”

N O T T I N G H A M ’ S N E W C R E AT I V E Q U A R T E R Launched in late 2012, the Creative Quarter centres on the city’s Lace Market and Hockley areas and is key in Nottingham city council’s ambitious growth plan to support the creative industries. It’s part of a Government-backed £60m City Deal which will support economic growth. Nottingham Trent University is a key partner of the city’s proposed Creative Quarter and will be working closely with the project. NTU’s pro-vice chancellor, Ann Priest, who is also Head of College for Art, Design and the Built Environment, said: “Nottingham Trent University is a huge creative resource, both in terms of the expertise of our academics and the raw talent of our students, and we are very keen to work with the city council to help the Creative Quarter fulfil its true potential.”

After graduating in 2012 with a first class honours degree in BArch (Hons) Architecture, Matt Mouncey was offered the job as Architectural Design Assistant with award-winning Nottingham designer, Wolfgang Buttress. Wolfgang is himself a former graduate of BA (Hons) Fine Art at NTU. Matt spends much of his time developing 2D working drawings and 3D models. He also produces CAD work for new works, competitions and sculpture contracts, using many of the skills he learned on his course. Matt says that the benefits of working with such a close-knit team include having an input in the creative outcome, and that ‘the best part about his job is his involvement in the design process’. The team are currently working on exciting projects, both live and potential, in places such as London, Toronto and Brisbane. The city has comedy on lockdown. Some of the nation’s leading comedy clubs have settled in Nottingham including The Glee Club, Just The Tonic and Jongleurs. Factor in the fast becoming legendary underground music and comedy venue, The Maze, along with The Capital FM Arena, which plays host to the nations top performers and your sides will be splitting no matter what your budget is!

CITY OF MUSIC Mark Del, DJ and founder of Nusic, a non-profit organisation backing unsigned Nottingham artists, says: “Musically Nottingham is the place to be right now. The NME, BBC, Guardian, plus countless other national media entities have all been waxing lyrical about Notts. In Nottingham if you want to live the dream we will support you, evangelise about you and cheer you on. Just ask Jake Bugg.” Clifton teenager Jake Bugg recently smashed the coveted UK number one spot with his debut self-titled album. Indie boys Dog Is Dead are on tour playing to 2000+ crowds every night across Europe. And Natalie Duncan recently got Radio 2 so excited that Cerys Matthews declared Nottingham ‘the capital of music’. And it doesn’t stop there, particularly on the female front. Hotly tipped to take over the charts this year is Harleighblu, a stunningly soulful 21-year-old who’s recently been snapped up by leading independent label Tru Thoughts.

We believe Harleighblu will be racking up more fans in no time, as will fellow female vocalist Indiana. After wowing the judges in Nusic’s Future Sound of Nottingham contest, ears from all corners of the county pricked up to the sound of her breathtaking voice. You may know her now thanks to recent first plays on BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast show, Zane Lowe and from Miss Annie Mac. Meanwhile 80s electro pop diva Ronika is set to release more new material this year, her latest single Rough N Soothe getting major props from no less than Pop Justice. And we haven’t even mentioned singer/songwriters you will absolutely love like Nina Smith and Georgie Rose. The latter’s been getting some major Xfm love recently. It’s fair to say Nottingham is a hotbed of young musical talent ready to erupt. If you want in, get yourself here pronto. There’s nowhere better to pursue your musical dream.
