MADE FOR WALKING; MADE IN ENGLAND Since 1960, the classic silhouette and yellow welt stitching of the Dr. Martens 1460 boot has been synonymous with free-spirited and independent style statements. Laura Hadland visited the original Cobbs Lane factory in Northamptonshire to discover the many faces of Dr. Martens. Leather is carefully judged and selected for each boot. Derbyshire locals were asked to submit a photo of themselves holding a piece of paper describing their own style challenges and sending out a fashion SOS for the intu Derby team to solve. SOS’s ranged from a new mum ‘s first night out with the girls minus the baby to guys who were feeling more David Brent than David Beckham! The ten winning finalists were selected based on their fashion SOS by a panel of judges including ourselves at SIXTY9°, intu Derby’s management team and intu Derby’s M&S store. The final ten received a full style makeover by a top local stylist that answered their style dilemma and will now feature as the official faces of intu Derby for the Spring Summer season. The final ten included: Dan Stokes, 20, a personal trainer from Ilkeston, was in search of a smarter date night

outfit. His style makeover of a spring grey blazer, paired with jeans, a shirt and navy blue brogues, all from Jack Jones was guaranteed to impress on his next date night. Alisha King, 20, from Matlock, was on the hunt for holiday wear, as she planned her first trip abroad to Corfu. The stylists found Alisha an Ann Summers bikini, a lace cover up dress from Accessorize, and a selection of beachwear accessories from New Look and M&S. Hope Smith, a 30 year old toddler group leader from Alvaston, came to intu looking for alternative ideas to her everyday uniform of casual jeans and boots, which saw the stylists picking out a dress in this summer’s essential pattern, gingham, with an embroidered shoulder bag and heeled sandals, all from Topshop. Journeys Festival International , the festival celebrating the artistic talents of refugee and asylum seekers, sharing their stories through great art and culture, returns for its fifth annual event in Leicester from 21st August – 3rd September. Highlights of this year’s festival includes CalaisStories; a multimedia, immersive exhibition at the LCB Lightbox Gallery that tells the stories of individuals from the Calais ‘Jungle’ and features a replica refugee shelter. Highcross and The Container Project which this year will house a VR experience by Rekrei created in reaction to the systematic destruction of Mosul Cultural Museum by Daesh. MIDLANDS TALENT AT GRADUATE FASHION WEEK Now in its 26th year, Graduate Fashion Week, the world’s largest platform from which aspiring designers can launch their career, returned with 22 catwalk shows over four days.

During the four-day event, which saw fashion students from Nottingham Trent, Birmingham City and De Montfort Universities take place, saw established designers, celebrities and industry experts host live talks and masterclasses in various locations across the venue. Each university also had their own stand showcasing a range of students inspiring work, giving visitors the opportunity to speak to them about their fashion course offering. The success of their debut album ‘Employment’, released in 2005 with hits including Everyday I Love You Less and Less and I Predict a Riot, sold over three million copies and won the band three Brit Awards including the award for Best British Group, Best British Rock Act and Best British Live Act. It also won an NME Award for Best Album and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Since then, Kaiser Chiefs have gone on to release five more original studio albums; Yours Truly, Angry Mob (2007), Off with Their Heads (2008), The Future Is Medieval (2011), Education, Education, Education & War (2014) and their latest album Stay Together (2016), which charted in the UK top five. We caught up with the Yorkshire quintet’s bassist Simon Rix about set lists, sleepy fans and the Chiefs very own summer of love.

leave out of the set? ‘Dare not’ is an interesting question really. One of the things about our band and I think it’s kind of unique in a way is that we are a band really where we like to play a gig and we want everyone to have a good time. I think y’know, not playing big songs is sort of a bit selfish really for the people who have got tickets to come see us. So I don’t think we’d ever do it. I don’t think it’s a matter of not daring to, I think we feel like we’ve written some songs, some great songs that everyone likes and we love the reaction to y’know, still when we play ‘I Predict A Riot’, ‘Ruby’ and other songs the reaction is still amazing, do you know what I mean? Even for those ones that are quite old now y’know. We love that reaction, so why would we not play them?

With so many huge songs to choose from and obviously your new material from the new album. How do you go about choosing your set list? I don’t know really, it’s got a little bit harder. I sort of, generally write the set list and I think it sort of writes itself, really. There’s songs that everybody wants to hear and then we’ll play some new songs from the new record and then we’ll try and dig out a couple of things that maybe are a bit unusual which I think keeps us interested and some of the people who come see us a lot obviously will be there as well so we play a little bit of that but y’know, just try and… As you say, we’ve got quite a lot of songs that everyone knows so it makes it quite easy. Is there one or two songs that you just dare not

And what song do you think does get the best reaction? Over all the years with all the songs that you’ve played, is there one particular one that just stands out that you can just see the crowd going nuts for? I think there’s a few obvious ones really. I think different places, different things. So when we go into Europe, ‘Ruby’ was a much bigger song than anything else really in sort of like Germany or places like that. Is this something that you think about? We don’t really think about it too much. I mean like, the album’s called ‘Stay Together’ and I think one of those things is we have stayed together and we are all still all very keen to be in a band. Y’know even when Rickys been off doing tele y’know, people go and do other things, we always sort of, get back together and it feels like the thing we’re meant to do. I think that helps really and we’ve always said y’know, I think we’ve had a few ups

and downs but on the whole try and write some great songs that we like, the people like, that connect to the audience and play great gigs. I mean, I think one of our strengths, even probably more than the albums is just the fact that I think people come and see us live and they know they’re gonna have a good night y’know. And I think, we’ve played a lot of festivals before and get booked for festivals that y’know, maybe people don’t buy the ticket perhaps to come see the Kaiser Chiefs specifically at I don’t know, Glastonbury or Leeds and Reading or whatever festival we’re playing at, but they know if they can come along and they know they’re gonna have a good time and they’re gonna know the songs and they’re gonna sing and run around and Ricky’s gonna be entertaining, so I just think it could… Sorry, I’m gonna answer the question now! I think being

a good live band and being a good group of friends and I think still wanting it and still doing it after all these years. I think that’s the reason that we have managed to stay around. You’re going to be headlining at Splendour in Nottingham this year Yeah, we’re really looking forward to performing at Splendour. We know the crowd and the setting will make for an unforgettable atmosphere. And then you’re back in the midlands for the Jockey Club I can imagine it’s probably been quite a while since you guys have been in Lincoln to play a show. You know what, we came to Lincoln recently because we played a radio thing in the sort of University venue, a sort of private gig. But that’s not a good story. The story about Lincoln I think, is our first ever gig with this band, we weren’t called Kaiser Chiefs, we were called something else but it was the same people as Kaiser Chiefs. The first ever

27 gig we did outside of Leeds was in Lincoln at the Bivouac and two people were there and one fell asleep. Fantastic, was that as Parva? As Parva, yeah. Our first ever gig as a band, we got a van, I think we had someone there to drive us and help load the gear in. It was all excitement as our first gig outside of Leeds and then we turned up and as I say, there were 2 people and 1 fell asleep so I’d hope if we play there’ll be more than that many people there! Do you approach the racecourse shows any differently to your normal kind of tours? It’s more like a tour than it is a festival I think because obviously when you play at a festival there’s loads and loads and loads of bands and loads of things going on and this is only us basically, supported by some horseracing! So we just sort of try and put on a good show for everybody really. At the end of the day everyone’s had a good time, hopefully they’ve won some money and they’ve got drunk so then we just try and put on a good show to sort of end it all off really. Play some hits, get everyone there bouncing and loosening their ties and kicking off their high heels. Are summer holidays a thing of the past for you now you just play festivals in the UK and Europe throughout the summer? The people in our band who have children, which is not me, definitely definitely hate the fact that fundamentally, summer holidays they do not get to be at home or go on

lovely vacations with their children. I just said to another guy who was fairly disbelieving of this fact. Apart from I think it was like 2010 when we had a year off, we have played festivals every single summer since 2004. The first one was a little on the light side, but after that, we play about I dunno, 20 or 30 between summer festivals y’know.

She talks to LISA PIDDINGTON about her new range. Working with some of the biggest names in beauty meant Alexa Mullane knew more than most about the industry. Ten years in marketing with the likes of Harvey Nichols, Crème de la Mer and Chanel eyewear not only gave her a rare insight into luxury markets but also the passion to eventually launch her own brand. And less than a year after creating Potion London, the former Solihull Sixth Form College student is celebrating seeing her wellbeing beauty products filling the shelves at Harvey Nichols stores throughout the UK. “I had some amazing experiences working in marketing,” explains Alexa, aged 34. “But I wanted to launch my own company, and because I had a personal interest in both beauty and nutrition it made sense to combine my interests.” Potion London offers a range of scientifically formulated supplements that promote beauty from the inside out. “The saying ‘you are what you eat’ always made sense to me so I wanted to create a complete wellness brand that helped address a whole range of concerns, rather than just have a focus on beauty,” she says.

Hold on to your seats, cinema-goers, as the Summer Blockbuster is back. With big releases like Alien: Covenant, Pirates of the Caribbean and Baywatch on the horizon Richard Doherty looks at what might tickle your film fancy this summer.

SPIDER- MAN : HOMECOMING / WONDER WOMAN

It’s Marvel vs DC again this summer as we get our fix of comic book fantasy in the form of a more youthful Spidey and a darker, less flowery Wonder Woman. After Tobey Maguire and then Andrew Garfield, we now have Tom Holland in the clingy suit, slinging webs to save NYC against the evil Vulture (Michael Keaton). Will this younger imagining of the popular hero have us swinging from the rafters or will it get stuck in its own web? With Wonder Woman we have something a bit different, a FEMALE super hero. At last! Something fresh (and don’t think I’ve forgotten about Supergirl even if you have or all of the female characters in X-Men…they haven’t had their own films, yet). Diana, Princess of the Amazons, (Gal Gadot) learns of a battle in the outside world thanks to the news spread by a crashed pilot (Chris Pine). Off she hops to save the world! But will there be gold hot-pants and an invisible plane?? We can but hope.

DUNKIRK

Well, the title says it all, really. A Brit-laden war movie from the pen of Christopher Nolan (who also Directed) with more home-grown talent than you could shake a rifle at. Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Harry Styles (yes, him out of One Direction), Cillian Murphy…it goes on. Action aplenty and no doubt tears will be shed for, as we know, not everyone made it home from that beach in France. www.69-degrees.co.uk

THE DARK TOWER

Based upon the series of books by Stephen King, this science fiction/fantasy/western/horror film combines many genres and plenty of brooding and dark foreboding in the form of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Anyone familiar with the books may be interested, or aghast, to learn that this will apparently be a different take on the stories, rather than a simple adaptation. As you can guess from the mixture of genres it covers, it could be an interesting ride and a first step in to a new franchise.

ATOMIC BLONDE

Starring Charlize Theron as an undercover MI6 agent in Cold War Germany…well that’s enough right? I mean, c’mon…it’s Charlize Theron! With James MacAvoy as her help in the field, this film certainly adds to the powerful female lead character stable. This woman holds no punches as a bit of a female bad-ass Bond/Jason Bourne. Guns, fight scenes, comedy…and Charlize.

DVD: GET OUT / HIDDEN FIGURES / VICEROY’S HOUSE

Far too many good releases to choose from this issue so here’s my top threeall great films for various reasons. You have the mind-play and plot twists of the freaky Get Out; you have the feel good factor and easy watchability of the excellent Hidden Figures; you have the sumptuous Viceroy’s House with its powerful, political message and a wonderful score by A.R.Rahman. Watch them all, you won’t be disappointed.

An essence of Laura Marling and Stevie Nicks flow through her vocals, leaving the audience falling at their feet throughout their shows which are sure to captivate you. The band are already on the road to success as it’s not just the UK this band plan to prevail having recently played shows in France.

Nottingham/Derby: Babe Punch

Grunge rock chicks Babe Punch span across the homelands of Nottingham and Derby. Their sound has attracted praise from NME and fellow rock band – Drenge. Driven by a mission to show the strength in women, these girls have shown they are a www.69-degrees.co.uk

Dream pop, with pshycadelic undertones creeping through. The band has well and truly broke out onto their hometown scene and gathered an impressive number of plays on their SoundCloud account. We predict big things for Royal Arcade’s future. Watch this space.

Leicester: Sepia Sun

This rocktronica trio have been on the music scene since 2014 performing around their hometown of Leicester but what is rocktronica I hear you cry? Why it’s the impeccable mix of rock and electronic and trust us when we say it’s a blessing to our ear drums and iPod’s. Over the years the use of electronic music technology in rock music has come into its own, giving the rock scene something it truly needs. A unique, fresh sound and this is exactly what Sepia Sun brings to the table.

So when our review copy of Truth Is a Beautiful Thing arrived, the office was hushed as streaming began… but not for too long. Beautiful as this sophomore release from the band it shows little progression in sound compared to the XX or the ridiculously underrated Arthur Beatrice for example – another of our favourite late night listens. Hannah Reid’s voice is simply stunning but in this release it’s not enough to make us play repeat.

Fall Out Boy’s seventh studio album won’t drop until the 15th of September this year, but the band have already started teasing fans through ambiguous clips and social media updates, from sharing a note hand written by Pete Wentz to suggestions of a possible collaboration with Panic! At the Disco, following a cameo appearance from Brendon Urie. Wentz proclaims in his note that the album is exactly as the title says ‘Mania’. Their only released single so far ‘Young and Menace’ brings with it harsh, electro rock tones and dark themes that we love.

The Grammy Award winning singer saw incredible success with her first single Royals at just 17, followed by a hugely successful debut album Pure Heroine but further single success in the UK has eluded her which leaves you to ask the question “was the cleverness of Royals just a fluke?” Despite a disproportionate amount of Radio 1 airplay, the first single from the album Melodrama just leaves us feeling grumpy. AT NOTTINGHAM IN FASHION EVENT Midlands Fashion fans descended on Nottingham for a weekend of style at this year’s Nottingham in Fashion event. A Leicester-based female networking initiative, Girls Empowered, has launched with the aim to empower girls and women across Leicester to make movement in businesses, whether existing or new. With the rate of UK female entrepreneurs growing at three times the rate of male entrepreneurs, but with female-run businesses having just 27% turnover of male-run businesses, Girls Empowered has been set up to bridge the gap between eductaion and the workplace, as well as to teach new entrepreneurs how to increase revenues and reputation, through talks from successful business women. SUMMER DINING AT HARVEY NICHOLS Image

Head Chef at Harvey Nichols Birmingham MARK WALSH shares one his favourite summer recipes – Duck With Carrot Puree, Coriander And Mango.

INGREDIENTS – SERVES FOUR: Four duck breasts. Three teaspoons coriander seeds. Five carrots. Salt and pepper. 2cm cube butter. 90g coriander leaves. 250ml vegetable oil. Three ripe mangoes. One large pak choi.

METHOD:

1: Prepare the coriander oil the night before: Put around 50ml of oil in the blender and whizz on high speed, slowly adding the coriander leaves. Once blended add the rest of the oil. Lay a porous cloth in a colander and sieve the oil into a bowl. Cover and leave in the fridge over night. 2: To cook the duck: Trim any excess fat and score the skin in a criss-cross pattern with a very sharp knife in 1cm intervals. Toast 2tsps of coriander seeds and crush to season the duck. Place the meat skin-side down in a cold, non-stick pan on a medium heat without oil for six-eight minutes or until golden brown. Pour off the fat regularly and seal the other side for 30 seconds. Place the duck skin-side up on a rack in a roasting tin in the middle of the oven and cook for six-ten minutes. Once the duck is cooked, rest in a warm place for a further ten minutes

3: Carrot purée: Peel the carrots and cut into 1cm pieces. In a saucepan dry-fry 1tsps of coriander seeds until they start to smell citrusy then add the carrots, cover with water and season with the salt and pepper. Simmer until the carrots are completely cooked through then strain off the water and keep to one side. Put the carrots and the seeds in a food processor and whizz up on a low speed, slowly add some of the water and the butter, and blitz until velvety smooth. 4: Mango discs: Peel the mangoes and slice them into 5mm slices. Cut three small 10-15mm discs using a round cutter. Take the remaining fruit and blend until a smooth purée; put in a plastic piping bag and refrigerate until chilled. 5: Pak choi: Cut the root off, separate each leaf and wash, wilt in a pan and then lay on the plate. Plate up the rest of the ingredients as shown in the photograph. This dish is available from the new Summer menu at Harvey Nichols Birmingham. DON’T FOLLOW THE HERD Loud, extrovert and unashamedly funky, Leicester’s Boneyard describes itself as the “multicultural meat society”. Since opening, their unique blend of herbs and spices and great cuts of meat have proved a hit in the city. SIXTY9°’s food lover Lilith Hunt-Sheppard went along to try their ‘Spike’ for herself.

I have, in fact, been a fan of Boneyard since its opening at the tail end of 2016 but when I heard that there were some new additions to the menu to sample I was straight down to Granby Street to try them. The sun was blazing down and Boneyard’s front windows were pulled right back to let in the summer air- perfect for a spot of people watching. On arrival, we were greeted by Ed who lead us to our table and immediately guided us through the extensive cocktail menu, recommending drinks to suits our individual tastes. As Ed mixed our cocktails we relaxed and took the time to look at the menu and take in the funky and fierce interior. One of the great things about Boneyard is the amount of choice. The menu features a range of dishes that are available as small or large portions- perfect for a tapas style sharing feast. We decided to try a mix of smaller dishes and ordered Dirty Humm; traditional hummus with harissa, pickles and flat bread; longbone Lamb chops, marinated in yoghurt and spices, and cooked in a clay oven for extra flavour; huge three-joint chicken wings, brined in spices and then twice cooked for extra crispy skin; Crunchy Fish; fresh cod pieces n an airy spicy batter and lightly fried; slow-cooked Ribs in garlic, paprika and Spike sauce; Lamb Chilli Fries with Cheese and freshly prepared Pork scratchings gently warmed in Slaughter sauce and garnished with coriander and chilli. As we tucked in, the flavours hit you instantly. Everything is made fresh on the premises and, if like me, you love spice, then definitely add some of their freshly blended Slaughter Sauce to your order. Being a fan of traditional tandoor food, the chops were packed with authentic flavour with a cheeky after bite of heat. Unlike some spicy food the heat never overpowered the flavour. The ribs were another particular favourite, falling easily off the bone and packed with herbs and spices, the tender meat literally melted in the mouth. The surprise hits for me were the Crunchy Fish bites and Scratchings. Coated in a beautiful batter, the fish was soft, flaky and seasoned to perfection. The Scratchings were beautifully crunchy and moreish - I would personally recommend ordering them on arrival to enjoy as a snack as your meals are being prepared.

Almost defeated with full bellies we weren’t sure there would be room for desserts; until we saw the menu of course! The Dirty Blonde definitely caught my eye; a baked cheesecake with raspberries that proved a great palette cleanser whilst the other half opted for the Salted Caramel Cheesecake – perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. Boneyard has everything a carnivore could ask for; a meatilicious menu, huge portions, great freshly made cocktails all served in a funky venue in a great location. Food that’s packed with punch and flavour with the perfect amount of cheek. They have definitely put their spike in the city!

Disco-pop duo Ekkah returned to Birmingham to headline the first ibis Lates on Tour of the year, a series of gigs providing a stage to showcase young, up and coming music talent and to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The lobby of New Street Station’s Ibis Hotel was transformed into an exclusive live music venue for the night. BIERKELLER BAVARIAN BEER GARDEN Nottingham’s Bavarian-style bar has added an outside element to the three storey bar and restaurant on Friar Lane. Despite being in the heart of the city, the new outdoor space has a lush, tropical feel with a proper lawn and green living walls, like vertical gardens, on both sides. SHED GOOD At only 25 Elisabeth Barker-Carley is fast becoming one of the most influential people on the Midland’s Live Music scene. The driving force behind the re-opening of The Shed, Elisabeth tells us in her own words about how she got into running live music venues...

“

I finished studying at Ratcliffe College and I guess that university was the next natural step but, in the end, I decided against going - which my dad wasn’t too pleased about. My plan was to go to New York and intern at a recording studio; but it was soon bought to light that I could never afford that on my £5 an hour waitressing job! So, my dad struck up a deal with me. If I agreed to go to university, he would help fund my summer which consisted of three festivals and travelling around Spain. And then if I graduated and got a 1st, he would pay off my loan. Owning The Shed is something I still can’t quite get my head around.
