MADE FOR WALKING; MADE IN ENGLAND Since 1960, the classic silhouette and yellow welt stitching of the Dr. Martens 1460 boot has been synonymous with free-spirited and independent style statements. Laura Hadland visited the original Cobbs Lane factory in Northamptonshire to discover the many faces of Dr. Martens. Originally conceived as a tough work-boot, the distinctive Airwair creations shot to unexpected global fame by appealing to successive generations of youth counter-culture. Since then, the brand has experimented with numerous off-the-wall collaborations – most recently with super hip Parisian fashion collective Vetements and 90s pop-kitsch icons Beavis and Butthead. Over 50 years later, the archetypal shoes and boots are still being made by hand by a dedicated team of highly skilled cobblers in the picturesque village of Wollaston. The team rotates around the four sections of the factory, all able to turn their hand to clicking, closing, lasting and shoe rooming. The factory is a hive of activity. Leather is carefully judged and selected for each boot. The precisely cut and stitched upper is moulded into shape on a last before the celebrated Dr. Martens Airwair air cushioned sole is heat sealed and stitched in place. For aficionados of the brand, the factory shop is a little slice of heaven, stacked floor to ceiling with an incredible variety of boots in all shapes and sizes. It’s full of real gems, including samples that never made it to full production so you can bag yourself a totally unique pair of kicks at a bargain price. Those with a love for the rebellious individuality of Dr. Martens will adore the Originals range, where classic vintage silhouettes have been reintroduced in Black and Cherry Red Smooth leather; including the infamous 2976 Chelsea Boot and ‘longwing’ style 2989 Brogue. Summer drinks in the city There’s nowhere better than a lively city centre pub to truly feel the cosmopolitan vibe of a city in the summer. Whether it’s a traditional pub garden, a high-street pub or modern pub restaurant, Leicester has it all. The growing food and drinks scene is breathing new life into the city and it’s easy to be spoilt for choice! We’ve picked three of our favourite pubs to soak up the sun in the city! King Richard III- Highcross Street What a transformation for this city centre pub! Located in the heart of the city next to the Highcross shopping centre, this is a great place to unwind after a hard day’s shopping. Chris, Andy and Andrea have created a welcoming, modern and comfortable pub, which already has a great reputation for its amazing yet simple food and atmosphere. This comes as no surprise as they also own the hugely successful St Martins Coffee and Crafty Burger in St Martins Square. This beautifully restored Victorian building now serves locally sourced high quality food and drink. Combined with the addition of a lovely little courtyard, it’s perfect for summer days in the city.

The Old Horse - London Road Not short on personality, this award-winning pub is a must for anyone looking for a great selection of beer and cider on the bar. Looking out over Victoria Park and only a short walk into the city centre, this pub is a key destination for many when planning a night out. Just walking in, you are met with the fun and playful eccentricity of Kev and Dee who run the pub, making sure all are welcome including dogs and children who are always kept entertained. There is a huge, hidden gem of a beer garden out back while inside the cider room - essential for a Cider Pub of the Year winner - is a delight to any cider drinker with a rotation of craft cider on draught every month! Grab yourself a drink and soak up the friendly atmosphere of this pub.

The Knight & Garter - Hotel Street It’s clear that Sam Hagger has a passion for great pubs, great food and great service. Not content with running two award winning pubs, Sam has just finished renovating a third. The Knight & Garter is the latest addition to The Beautiful Pubs Collective and is handily placed next to the city's brand new multimillion pound continental inspired piazza area near Leicester Market. The Knight & Garter is more than just a pub, offering a restaurant, cellar bar and art gallery and is sure to raise the standard in the city. Serving unpasteurised beer from an imported beer kettle as well as local wines & spirits, the quality of drinks on offer is among the best around. Make sure you grab a seat on the stunning alfresco terrace overlooking the piazza, the perfect place to soak up the culture of the city in style!

Great pubs need great people

Pubs don’t survive without great people running them. From the owner to the bar staff, everyone involved makes your experience what it is. What makes a great pub owner is simple - passion. Passion for people, passion for food and drink and a passion to be successful. With that said there are still some vacant pubs around the city and county that are calling out for people with that passion to take them on and establish them as their own. Maybe you can be the next Leicester CAMRA Pub of the Year winner? Sound interesting? Let’s have a chat 0800 056 4111.

16 EVERYMAN PRODUCTS TO STOP THE HOLIDAY CHOP As summer approaches many men will wonder what to do with their hair. A combination of warmer weather and lighter nights can often mean that time is in short supply as busy social lives takeover. The solution may be shorter hair, but that’s not all: using quality products could also be key to saving time, effort — and looking your best. Everyman Barbers, who have stores in Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Leicester and Nottingham —agree that mens’ product choices can be a vital part of the puzzle, and they’re taking it upon themselves to lead the way. At all five stores you can find a huge selection of top quality products, and a team of highly-trained barbers to guide you in your selection. “For many years now we’ve put massive emphasis on offering the best products available on the market,” says Julie Gilronan, Retail Director at Everyman Barbers. “Hair or beard products are not something men should skimp on if they want to look their best, and if you think about it it’s a relatively low-cost, high-return investment,” he adds, pointing out that the large product areas in each store can account for as much as twenty percent of its turnover. Their belief in good products can be found in their product returns policy: if a customer decides that he doesn’t like — or get on with — a product, he can bring it back and get a full refund or swap it for a different one at any time after purchase. “Once a customer finds a product that he likes, it can

Derbyshire locals were asked to submit a photo of themselves holding a piece of paper describing their own style challenges and sending out a fashion SOS for the intu Derby team to solve. SOS’s ranged from a new mum ‘s first night out with the girls minus the baby to guys who were feeling more David Brent than David Beckham! The ten winning finalists were selected based on their fashion SOS by a panel of judges including ourselves at SIXTY9°, intu Derby’s management team and intu Derby’s M&S store. The final ten received a full style makeover by a top local stylist that answered their style dilemma and will now feature as the official faces of intu Derby for the Spring Summer season. The final ten included: Dan Stokes, 20, a personal trainer from Ilkeston, was in search of a smarter date night

outfit. His style makeover of a spring grey blazer, paired with jeans, a shirt and navy blue brogues, all from Jack Jones was guaranteed to impress on his next date night. Alisha King, 20, from Matlock, was on the hunt for holiday wear, as she planned her first trip abroad to Corfu. The stylists found Alisha an Ann Summers bikini, a lace cover up dress from Accessorize, and a selection of beachwear accessories from New Look and M&S. English student and journalist Anisha Kaur Johal from Littleover asked intu Derby to help her as she embarked on the first steps of her career, asking “what do I wear when attending VIP events and interviewing celebrities?” The stylists responded with a glamourous, bardot style jumpsuit from Quiz, paired with nude heels from Office.

Daisy Howstan, 21, a trainee optical consultant from Matlock, was already thinking about an outfit for YNOT festival, and was not disappointed with a fuchsia pink biker jacket which the stylist paired with a mesh dress, both from New Look, over the festival essentials of a slogan t-shirt from Miss Selfridge and Hunter Wellies, from Office. Student Jordan Obie, 20, Derby, was thrilled with jacket and Stussy t-shirt, from Superdry and red Adidas Originals Gazelles from Infinites to fit his retro, urban style. Hope Smith, a 30 year old toddler group leader from Alvaston, came to intu looking for alternative ideas to her everyday uniform of casual jeans and boots, which saw the stylists picking out a dress in this summer’s essential pattern, gingham, with an embroidered shoulder bag and heeled sandals, all from Topshop. Find these items and more in the great stores at intu Derby or visit intu.co.uk/derby. www.69-degrees.co.uk

MULTIPLE BRIT AWARD WINNING, INDIE-ROCK BAND, KAISER CHIEFS ARE HITTING THE MIDLANDS FESTIVAL SCENE HARD THIS SUMMER HEADLINING THIS YEAR’S AWARD-WINNING SPLENDOUR FESTIVAL, SATURDAY 22 JULY AND PERFORMING AT AN OPEN AIR CONCERT AT MARKET RASEN RACECOURSE ON THE 19TH AUGUST. The success of their debut album ‘Employment’, released in 2005 with hits including Everyday I Love You Less and Less and I Predict a Riot, sold over three million copies and won the band three Brit Awards including the award for Best British Group, Best British Rock Act and Best British Live Act. It also won an NME Award for Best Album and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Since then, Kaiser Chiefs have gone on to release five more original studio albums; Yours Truly, Angry Mob (2007), Off with Their Heads (2008), The Future Is Medieval (2011), Education, Education, Education & War (2014) and their latest album Stay Together (2016), which charted in the UK top five. We caught up with the Yorkshire quintet’s bassist Simon Rix about set lists, sleepy fans and the Chiefs very own summer of love.

leave out of the set? ‘Dare not’ is an interesting question really. One of the things about our band and I think it’s kind of unique in a way is that we are a band really where we like to play a gig and we want everyone to have a good time. I think y’know, not playing big songs is sort of a bit selfish really for the people who have got tickets to come see us. So I don’t think we’d ever do it. I don’t think it’s a matter of not daring to, I think we feel like we’ve written some songs, some great songs that everyone likes and we love the reaction to y’know, still when we play ‘I Predict A Riot’, ‘Ruby’ and other songs the reaction is still amazing, do you know what I mean? Even for those ones that are quite old now y’know. We love that reaction, so why would we not play them?

“OUR FIRST GIG OUTSIDE OF LEEDS WE TURNED UP, THERE WERE TWO PEOPLE AND ONE FELL ASLEEP”

With so many huge songs to choose from and obviously your new material from the new album. How do you go about choosing your set list? I don’t know really, it’s got a little bit harder. I sort of, generally write the set list and I think it sort of writes itself, really. There’s songs that everybody wants to hear and then we’ll play some new songs from the new record and then we’ll try and dig out a couple of things that maybe are a bit unusual which I think keeps us interested and some of the people who come see us a lot obviously will be there as well so we play a little bit of that but y’know, just try and… As you say, we’ve got quite a lot of songs that everyone knows so it makes it quite easy. Is there one or two songs that you just dare not

And what song do you think does get the best reaction? Over all the years with all the songs that you’ve played, is there one particular one that just stands out that you can just see the crowd going nuts for? I think there’s a few obvious ones really. I think different places, different things. So when we go into Europe, ‘Ruby’ was a much bigger song than anything else really in sort of like Germany or places like that. That’s our number 1 biggest hit. I think in the UK ‘I Predict A Riot’ is our sort of like our trademark and then also ‘Oh My God’ ‘cause we finish with that so that’s one with a great reaction. I think in the UK, the song we play and we absolutely know that it’s gonna be fine is ‘I Predict A Riot’. You guys are now a proper permanent fixture on the British music scene whilst so many of your contemporaries have kind of long since called it a day, why do you think you as a group

26 ‘Oh My God’ ‘cause we finish with that so that’s one with a great reaction. I think in the UK, the song we play and we absolutely know that it’s gonna be fine is ‘I Predict A Riot’. You guys are now a proper permanent fixture on the British music scene whilst so many of your contemporaries have kind of long since called it a day, why do you think you as a group of friends from Leeds have succeeded whilst so many have not? Is this something that you think about? We don’t really think about it too much. I mean like, the album’s called ‘Stay Together’ and I think one of those things is we have stayed together and we are all still all very keen to be in a band. Y’know even when Rickys been off doing tele y’know, people go and do other things, we always sort of, get back together and it feels like the thing we’re meant to do. I think that helps really and we’ve always said y’know, I think we’ve had a few ups

www.69-degrees.co.uk

and downs but on the whole try and write some great songs that we like, the people like, that connect to the audience and play great gigs. I mean, I think one of our strengths, even probably more than the albums is just the fact that I think people come and see us live and they know they’re gonna have a good night y’know. And I think, we’ve played a lot of festivals before and get booked for festivals that y’know, maybe people don’t buy the ticket perhaps to come see the Kaiser Chiefs specifically at I don’t know, Glastonbury or Leeds and Reading or whatever festival we’re playing at, but they know if they can come along and they know they’re gonna have a good time and they’re gonna know the songs and they’re gonna sing and run around and Ricky’s gonna be entertaining, so I just think it could… Sorry, I’m gonna answer the question now! I think being

a good live band and being a good group of friends and I think still wanting it and still doing it after all these years. I think that’s the reason that we have managed to stay around. You’re going to be headlining at Splendour in Nottingham this year Yeah, we’re really looking forward to performing at Splendour. We know the crowd and the setting will make for an unforgettable atmosphere. And then you’re back in the midlands for the Jockey Club I can imagine it’s probably been quite a while since you guys have been in Lincoln to play a show. You know what, we came to Lincoln recently because we played a radio thing in the sort of University venue, a sort of private gig. But that’s not a good story. The story about Lincoln I think, is our first ever gig with this band, we weren’t called Kaiser Chiefs, we were called something else but it was the same people as Kaiser Chiefs. The first ever

27 gig we did outside of Leeds was in Lincoln at the Bivouac and two people were there and one fell asleep. Fantastic, was that as Parva? As Parva, yeah. Our first ever gig as a band, we got a van, I think we had someone there to drive us and help load the gear in. It was all excitement as our first gig outside of Leeds and then we turned up and as I say, there were 2 people and 1 fell asleep so I’d hope if we play there’ll be more than that many people there! Do you approach the racecourse shows any differently to your normal kind of tours? It’s more like a tour than it is a festival I think because obviously when you play at a festival there’s loads and loads and loads of bands and loads of things going on and this is only us basically, supported by some horseracing! So we just sort of try and put on a good show for everybody really. At the end of the day everyone’s had a good time, hopefully they’ve won some money and they’ve got drunk so then we just try and put on a good show to sort of end it all off really. Play some hits, get everyone there bouncing and loosening their ties and kicking off their high heels. Are summer holidays a thing of the past for you now you just play festivals in the UK and Europe throughout the summer? The people in our band who have children, which is not me, definitely definitely hate the fact that fundamentally, summer holidays they do not get to be at home or go on

lovely vacations with their children. I just said to another guy who was fairly disbelieving of this fact. Apart from I think it was like 2010 when we had a year off, we have played festivals every single summer since 2004. The first one was a little on the light side, but after that, we play about I dunno, 20 or 30 between summer festivals y’know.

SIXTY9° Style Commentator Sarah Potter talks the hottest festival trends of 2017

Ah festival season! Time to chill out or rave away to some awesome tunes and forget about the real world. For those of you who refuse to stay in the same jeans and t-shirt for four days straight, there is an abundance of fashionable festival inspired clothing. Smatters of bright prints, lashings of shimmering glitter and a tassel or two make up collections of clothing that are fun, vibrant and will certainly get you noticed. Here’s some of my favourite looks- follow me @sarahhhhrah Instagram: @sarah_ jayne_potter www.sarahjaynepotter.com to see more.x

tropical

vibe

Bold, bright tropical inspired prints and patterns are a great trend to channel this Summer, even if the UK weather doesn’t quite live up to a Caribbean getaway. This trend is for the stylish girls who want to make an impression without going all out. Palm prints, pineapples, flamingos, tie dyes and big paint brush strokes are great options.

THE POTIONS THAT PROVE

BEAUTY COMES FROM WITHIN With a background working with luxury brands, Solihull-born Alexa Mullane was certainly well placed to launch her own exclusive supplements range. She talks to LISA PIDDINGTON about her new range. Working with some of the biggest names in beauty meant Alexa Mullane knew more than most about the industry. Ten years in marketing with the likes of Harvey Nichols, Crème de la Mer and Chanel eyewear not only gave her a rare insight into luxury markets but also the passion to eventually launch her own brand. And less than a year after creating Potion London, the former Solihull Sixth Form College student is celebrating seeing her wellbeing beauty products filling the shelves at Harvey Nichols stores throughout the UK. “I had some amazing experiences working in marketing,” explains Alexa, aged 34. “But I wanted to launch my own company, and because I had a personal interest in both beauty and nutrition it made sense to combine my interests.” Potion London offers a range of scientifically formulated supplements that promote beauty from the inside out. “The saying ‘you are what you eat’ always made sense to me so I wanted to create a complete wellness brand that helped address a whole range of concerns, rather than just have a focus on beauty,” she says.

“I believe it is important to get all of your nutrients from food, but in reality with our busy lifestyles and love of processed meals it can be hard to achieve this, so food supplements can help fill in the gaps and by supplementing a healthy diet we ensure we get what we need on a daily basis. “The body needs nutrients in specific combinations and ratios in order to be absorbed and used properly in the body. For example, if you take calcium, your body also needs magnesium, vitamin D and vitamin K to help you absorb and use the calcium. A lot of food supplements don’t address this and it can be a headache to work out exactly what you need. I wanted to offer products that can be taken alone with confidence that it’s exactly what the body needs. “There are also some things that are very difficult to get from food alone. OK, so you can get collagen from bone broth but you would have to eat a lot of it every day to get enough to make a difference to your skin. Research shows that collagen can help reduce wrinkles, increase elasticity and increase skin hydration, so for people who want to see these benefits it can be useful for them to take it in the form of a food supplement.” The Potion London supplements range is available at Beyond Beauty in Harvey Nichols Birmingham, and prices start from £25.

ALEXA’S TOP THREE POTION LONDON MUST-HAVES: “The products are so different and serve different needs: the Bone Formula, for example, is great for people with a dairy intolerance who might not get enough calcium from their diet; while the Hyaluronic Complex is good for people with dry skin conditions, joint problems and dry eyes. But if I could only pick three to take

www.69-degrees.co.uk

to a desert island it would be the Collagen Boost, as it gives my skin a noticeable glow and makes it super smooth; the Probiotic which is fantastic for gut health, having a positive knock-on effect on skin health, mental health and allergies; and Eat Your Greens, which is a whole-food formula providing seven vegetables

including spirulina, kale and beetroot to give me a muchneeded boost of nutrients.”

STYLIST'S CHOICE: SWIMWEAR The biggest decision you’ll make this summer is what to wear on the beach. The smallest of outfits, summer swimmer actually has to do the most work; transforming from activewear to flattering flirt outfit seamlessly. Add in the need to keep your Instagram followers up whilst dodging any mickey taking from the lads back home and you begin to see what we’re on about. It’s really important to choose a style in which you feel confident and comfortable in – if you’re the shy and retiring type then that lime mankini is probably not gonna be a good move… Swimwear needs to be versatile but you need to be clear on what your key beach objective is as that will most likely dictate the style for you– are you swimming, lounging, partying, flirting or all four.

BumpaTrunk £38.16 BCNUclothing

Styled on a classic sports short, a trunk tends trunks to have a fitted lining inside to avoid any embarrassing leg gape and are generally made from nylon or polyester so that they dry faster,This also means they don’t crease and if you got a plain matt finish they’re great to pop in your hand luggage for a day to night short. The most forgiving style for muffin top man, most high street styles tend to be too baggy though which will make you look like a twelve year old with skinny legs; the key here is to go for a tailored cut. Make sure the length lands no lower than mid-thigh.The perfect all-rounder.

SPORTS TRUNK

SWIM BRIEF Speedos or budgie smugglers, we’re sure that whoever said it pays to advertise would have had a pair or two of these. Cut high on the leg and designed to frame every man’s assets front and back, the swim brief is definitely the one if flirting comes first. Keep pattern and design features to a minimum to avoid overcooking - plain navy, khaki or grey elevates the look and if you’re going white make you check to see how sheer your tighty whiteys go in the water.

JAMMERS So if you’re a serious swimmer, or you want to look like one then the jammer is for you. Skin tight to create less drag, these knee length trunks have replaced the board sort as the go to Ath Leisure beach basic- aside from the wetsuit of course! The choice for the serious swimmer. www.69-degrees.co.uk

Dsquared2 Union Jack Swim Briefs £150 Selfridges

Speedo Jammer £26 John Lewis

A straight cut style, the sports trunk is generally made of lycra to ensure a figure hugging fit which means that you need to feel body confident to pull off this look. Less revealing and look at me than the swimbrief, the sports trunk is the go to style for those that want to get noticed without feeling overly exposed. Perfect for partying.

GAME FACE

The right pair of sunglasses can turn you from zero to hero in seconds and add some seaside swagger to your game this summer. dark. Metal framework will soften an angular shaped shade.

ROUND FACE:

Definition is key so slim your cheeks with a frame slightly wider than the broadest part of your face. Angular styles will pull your temple higher, lengthening your face and break up the roundness. Solid 6 acetate framework in dark colours and prints create a defined outline and keep things masculine.

SQUARE JAW:

Aviators are a great shape for a square face. If you have 1 strong features, the bigger the better, whilst delicate features are better suited to the small to medium sized option. Oval and round frames look great edged with a solid acetate rim. For a more masculine approach, metal framework with dark lenses also look great on square faces, accentuating your chiselled features. Rectangular shaped frames with soft edges are a classic, unisex option so be warned; your partner will steal 2 them.

OVAL FACE:

A large frame is best for the oval 3 face as this will accentuate and chisel cheekbones. Details on the arms will pull your temples out, adding definition to your face shape but make sure that the arms don’t sit too low on your face. Visor styles work great- make sure the lenses are www.69-degrees.co.uk

HEART / DIAMOND FACE:

Go for a more quirky, retro shaped pair of sunglasses. Coloured frames and arms with strong detail will soften the lower portion of your face shape by accentuating the eye area. Wrap-around frames work well in balancing out a diamond face shape whilst rectangular frames can balance out a pointed chin.

BIG SCREEN

Hold on to your seats, cinema-goers, as the Summer Blockbuster is back. With big releases like Alien: Covenant, Pirates of the Caribbean and Baywatch on the horizon Richard Doherty looks at what might tickle your film fancy this summer.

SPIDER- MAN : HOMECOMING / WONDER WOMAN

It’s Marvel vs DC again this summer as we get our fix of comic book fantasy in the form of a more youthful Spidey and a darker, less flowery Wonder Woman. After Tobey Maguire and then Andrew Garfield, we now have Tom Holland in the clingy suit, slinging webs to save NYC against the evil Vulture (Michael Keaton). Will this younger imagining of the popular hero have us swinging from the rafters or will it get stuck in its own web? With Wonder Woman we have something a bit different, a FEMALE super hero. At last! Something fresh (and don’t think I’ve forgotten about Supergirl even if you have or all of the female characters in X-Men…they haven’t had their own films, yet). Diana, Princess of the Amazons, (Gal Gadot) learns of a battle in the outside world thanks to the news spread by a crashed pilot (Chris Pine). Off she hops to save the world! But will there be gold hot-pants and an invisible plane?? We can but hope.

DUNKIRK

Well, the title says it all, really. A Brit-laden war movie from the pen of Christopher Nolan (who also Directed) with more home-grown talent than you could shake a rifle at. Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Harry Styles (yes, him out of One Direction), Cillian Murphy…it goes on. Action aplenty and no doubt tears will be shed for, as we know, not everyone made it home from that beach in France. www.69-degrees.co.uk

THE DARK TOWER

Based upon the series of books by Stephen King, this science fiction/fantasy/western/horror film combines many genres and plenty of brooding and dark foreboding in the form of Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Anyone familiar with the books may be interested, or aghast, to learn that this will apparently be a different take on the stories, rather than a simple adaptation. As you can guess from the mixture of genres it covers, it could be an interesting ride and a first step in to a new franchise.

ATOMIC BLONDE

Starring Charlize Theron as an undercover MI6 agent in Cold War Germany…well that’s enough right? I mean, c’mon…it’s Charlize Theron! With James MacAvoy as her help in the field, this film certainly adds to the powerful female lead character stable. This woman holds no punches as a bit of a female bad-ass Bond/Jason Bourne. Guns, fight scenes, comedy…and Charlize.

DVD: GET OUT / HIDDEN FIGURES / VICEROY’S HOUSE

Far too many good releases to choose from this issue so here’s my top threeall great films for various reasons. You have the mind-play and plot twists of the freaky Get Out; you have the feel good factor and easy watchability of the excellent Hidden Figures; you have the sumptuous Viceroy’s House with its powerful, political message and a wonderful score by A.R.Rahman. Watch them all, you won’t be disappointed.

MUSIC MIXOLOGISTS BE A MOVER AND SHAKER IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Imagine sitting in a bar and ordering a mojito. The waiter only gives you a glass of ice. When you complain, he points to the bar and says, “Sorry, that bartender is only trained in serving ice.” You send it back. The waiter returns with just ice and mint. “Our other bartender only does garnish,” he explains. A bar employing onetrick ponies won’t last long. Today’s competitive music industry is the same. It’s not enough to be a ‘singer,’ ‘producer’ or ‘manager.’ Music professionals need a cocktail of skills. They require all the ingredients for a successful career. In Leicester, there’s a music school with a difference where industry experts train their students for the evolving future. Echo Factory graduates are not bystanders. They are makers, performers and creatives, well-prepared for the real music industry. Echo Factory delivers bespoke degrees covering music performance, business and production validated by the University of Wolverhampton. Sixty-Nine Degrees dropped in to Echo Factory’s end-of-year Collaborative Music performance to find out more… As it was assessment day for the first-year performance students, we expected a tense scene straight from the X Factor holding pen. Instead, we

entered Echo’s industrial chic chill-out zone to find calm, prepared students excitedly chatting with their tutors. Piers Nicholls, Director of Studies, said: “We nurture each student on a 1:1 basis and support their individual journeys. Our students are unique beings with potential and they unite with Echo Factory to achieve their goals. Even our entry auditions and interviews are encouraging and welcoming. At Echo Factory, we prefer an enabling model, not a harsh approach.” Inside Echo Factory’s impressive live venue, we were amazed by the polished, professional performances given by the student band on stage. The musicians were versatile, dynamic and exuded confidence. Nicholls said: “What is most exceptional is how our students have moved forwards in terms of competence, knowledge and temperament. They have achieved a sense of belonging with the music. Our students are doers, not just learners. Graduates must be robust and ready for the challenges of the music industry. We give them the skills, knowledge and expertise to deal with that.” Ready to create a stir in the music industry? Echo Factory are still accepting applications for their September 2017 courses. NU:MUSIC

The Midlands is alive with a wealth of new musical talent. Sixty9° Molly Copoc explores the sound of our cities and the freshest new talent. force to be reckoned with after the release of their EP Control. With entrancing vocals and hearty bass you can’t help but move your feet. The band recently played their first headline gig in Birmingham and we predict there are many more shows where that came from.

Nottingham: Keto

Funky, fresh and ready to storm the music scene is four piece Nottingham band, Keto. Their lo-fi folk style places their music in a hypnotic field, with lead singer, Leah Sinead producing a spellbinding performance with her band. An essence of Laura Marling and Stevie Nicks flow through her vocals, leaving the audience falling at their feet throughout their shows which are sure to captivate you. The band are already on the road to success as it’s not just the UK this band plan to prevail having recently played shows in France.

Nottingham/Derby: Babe Punch

Grunge rock chicks Babe Punch span across the homelands of Nottingham and Derby. Their sound has attracted praise from NME and fellow rock band – Drenge. Driven by a mission to show the strength in women, these girls have shown they are a www.69-degrees.co.uk

Dream pop, with pshycadelic undertones creeping through. The band has well and truly broke out onto their hometown scene and gathered an impressive number of plays on their SoundCloud account. We predict big things for Royal Arcade’s future. Watch this space.

Leicester: Sepia Sun

This rocktronica trio have been on the music scene since 2014 performing around their hometown of Leicester but what is rocktronica I hear you cry? Why it’s the impeccable mix of rock and electronic and trust us when we say it’s a blessing to our ear drums and iPod’s. Over the years the use of electronic music technology in rock music has come into its own, giving the rock scene something it truly needs. A unique, fresh sound and this is exactly what Sepia Sun brings to the table.

Leicester: Royal Arcade

Fresh onto the music scene are five piece band Royal Arcade. Their alluring live shows are a scene awash with mosh pits, the odd crowd surfer and hordes of passionate chanting. Their music places them in a whimsical subgenre of alternative rock –

Derby: Alex Blood & The Diggers

2017 is the year of Alex Blood & the Diggers. Having supported the likes of Maverick Sabre and claiming themselves a number of main stage slots at festivals they bring something new and exciting to the music scene with their sound that is….well…..it’s so good they can’t even pin point it themselves. Fresh out of Derby, this quartet grace the stage with their mash up of genres: Punk, rock, rap and reggae! Oh you do spoil us boys. With a debut album in the making, we suspect 2017 is the year the band will launch into the mainstream music industry and we cannot wait.

vocals twinned with brash guitar riffs to establish themselves in the noise-rock genre accompanied by connotations of lo-fi inspired shoe gaze with a hint of grunge.

Four piece alternative/shoegaze band are fresh out of Derby and when we say fresh we mean they are so new to the scene they played their first gig back in January! Expect more music to emerge from this hopeful band this year with big guitars and mesmerizing shoe gaze vocals. Spread the word and tell your friends!

ESSENTIAL DOWNLOADS

SIXTY9°’s JON FRASER AND RUBINA BALA ON THE BIGGEST SOUNDS THIS SUMMER RELAXER

Alt J

Mercury Prize winners Alt J return with a distinctly cinematic sound for their latest Long Player, Relaxer. Teasing the release with an online game at altjband.com Lead single 3WW brings with it an obsession with binary that continues on second single In Cold Blood that features a new addition to the Leeds based electro indie pioneers sound – an impressively punchy horn section that’s as far more Hollywood than Headingley.

London Grammar

TRUTH IS A BEAUTIFUL THING We hold London Grammar close to our heart here at SIXTY9° towers what with them meeting and forming whilst studying in Nottingham and with their first album being just so blooming brilliant. So when our review copy of Truth Is a Beautiful Thing arrived, the office was hushed as streaming began… but not for too long. Beautiful as this sophomore release from the band it shows little progression in sound compared to the XX or the ridiculously underrated Arthur Beatrice for example – another of our favourite late night listens. Hannah Reid’s voice is simply stunning but in this release it’s not enough to make us play repeat.

Lady Antebellum HEART BREAK

Dua Lipa DUA LIPA

With a fresh take on pop blending hip hop and soul with beautiful vocals, Dua Lipa has definitely been one to watch in 2017. Following on from the success of the huge hits Be The One, Hotter Than Hell, Blow Your Mind and Lost in Your Light, the 21 year old, who has been trying for most of her teenage years to make it in the music industry, has finally released her self-named debut album bursting full of pop gorgeousness and exploring the ever relatable themes of love, relationships and break ups.

Halsey

A slightly misleading title as the song from which the award winning Lady Antebellum’s seventh studio album, Heart Break, takes its name is not about a heart breaking, but a heart taking a break. The break may also relate to the band’s own recent hiatus which saw Kelley release his own solo album and tour and Scott announce her own gospel album made with her family. The new album release will be centre stage of an all new ‘world tour’ although, at the time of writing, the only dates announced are state side... www.69-degrees.co.uk

HOPELESS FOUNTAIN KINGDOM Two years after her debut album and after collaborating with Chainsmoker on their no 1 track Closer, Halsey is set to follow up 2015’s Badlands this summer. Dropping hints like a twitter treasure hunt, Halsey finally gave fans an April Easter egg with first release from the album Now or Never – which moves away from the Alt Pop of her first album and exploits a languid RnB bassline to full effect.

57 After featuring in Rae Sremurd’s Black Beatles DROP TOP WIZOP and a post-prison album on the top of the R&B and Hip Hop charts, Gucci Mane returns with a new album and teaser freestyle Drop Top Wizop, still very much in his own wellknown style. With an autobiography in the making you’re sure to hear much more of him in 2017.

Gucci Mane

Nickleback

FEED THE MACHINES Nickleback will be returning on stage this summer with a new tour and their new album Feed The Machine; released on the 9th of June. It’s a long awaited return to form for Nickleback who took a break from music after their vocalist Chad Kroeger’s health issues led them to cancel their 2014-2015 tour. Feed the Machine is the band’s 9th album and if the title single is anything to go by, Nickleback are finally coming back with cascading drums, heavy guitar riffs and killer choruses in the proper old school rock way we love them for.

Fall out boy

MANIA

Fall Out Boy’s seventh studio album won’t drop until the 15th of September this year, but the band have already started teasing fans through ambiguous clips and social media updates, from sharing a note hand written by Pete Wentz to suggestions of a possible collaboration with Panic! At the Disco, following a cameo appearance from Brendon Urie. Wentz proclaims in his note that the album is exactly as the title says ‘Mania’. Their only released single so far ‘Young and Menace’ brings with it harsh, electro rock tones and dark themes that we love.

Ha im

SOMETHING TO TELL YOU Four years after their 2013 Grammy nominated debut album Days Are Gone, the Haim sisters return with their long awaited second album release due 7th of July. Growing up in the Haim house must have been a blast as their parents obviously had great taste in music. With a sound that owes a huge amount to early eighties bands such as The Pretenders, Starship, Fleetwood Mac , the three sisters are back with a lead single that wouldn’t seem out of place rolling over the credits of any Molly Ringwald movie and we love ‘em all the more for it.

Lorde

MELODRAMA

SZA

CTRL (TBA)

With the new single Love Galore released early May following Drew Barrymore, SZA’s new album release seems to be getting closer, but how close? One of the most anticipated Hip Hop albums of summer 2017, CTRL still does not have a release date as we go to press but they have just released the 14 song tracklist featuring Kendrick Lamaar and Isaiah Rashad. We’re waiting…

The Grammy Award winning singer saw incredible success with her first single Royals at just 17, followed by a hugely successful debut album Pure Heroine but further single success in the UK has eluded her which leaves you to ask the question “was the cleverness of Royals just a fluke?” Despite a disproportionate amount of Radio 1 airplay, the first single from the album Melodrama just leaves us feeling grumpy. That sparse, nineties piano backing just makes us long for the good old days of house and a proper old school hands in the hair dancefloor banger instead of this damp sparkler as a result of uninspired production and a lyric that lacks intelligence or substance. www.69-degrees.co.uk

SUMMER DINING AT HARVEY NICHOLS Image

Head Chef at Harvey Nichols Birmingham MARK WALSH shares one his favourite summer recipes – Duck With Carrot Puree, Coriander And Mango.

y Raven

by Rile

INGREDIENTS – SERVES FOUR: Four duck breasts. Three teaspoons coriander seeds. Five carrots. Salt and pepper. 2cm cube butter. 90g coriander leaves. 250ml vegetable oil. Three ripe mangoes. One large pak choi.

METHOD:

1: Prepare the coriander oil the night before: Put around 50ml of oil in the blender and whizz on high speed, slowly adding the coriander leaves. Once blended add the rest of the oil. Lay a porous cloth in a colander and sieve the oil into a bowl. Cover and leave in the fridge over night. 2: To cook the duck: Trim any excess fat and score the skin in a criss-cross pattern with a very sharp knife in 1cm intervals. Toast 2tsps of coriander seeds and crush to season the duck. Place the meat skin-side down in a cold, non-stick pan on a medium heat without oil for six-eight minutes or until golden brown. Pour off the fat regularly and seal the other side for 30 seconds. Place the duck skin-side up on a rack in a roasting tin in the middle of the oven and cook for six-ten minutes. Once the duck is cooked, rest in a warm place for a further ten minutes

3: Carrot purée: Peel the carrots and cut into 1cm pieces. In a saucepan dry-fry 1tsps of coriander seeds until they start to smell citrusy then add the carrots, cover with water and season with the salt and pepper. Simmer until the carrots are completely cooked through then strain off the water and keep to one side. Put the carrots and the seeds in a food processor and whizz up on a low speed, slowly add some of the water and the butter, and blitz until velvety smooth. 4: Mango discs: Peel the mangoes and slice them into 5mm slices. Cut three small 10-15mm discs using a round cutter. Take the remaining fruit and blend until a smooth purée; put in a plastic piping bag and refrigerate until chilled. 5: Pak choi: Cut the root off, separate each leaf and wash, wilt in a pan and then lay on the plate. Plate up the rest of the ingredients as shown in the photograph. This dish is available from the new Summer menu at Harvey Nichols Birmingham. The restaurant at the luxury Mailbox store is open Sundays from 11am-10pm; Mondays from 10am-7pm; and Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10am-10.30pm. Afternoon Tea is served daily from 3.30pm-5.30pm.

DON’T FOLLOW THE HERD Loud, extrovert and unashamedly funky, Leicester’s Boneyard describes itself as the “multicultural meat society”. Since opening, their unique blend of herbs and spices and great cuts of meat have proved a hit in the city. SIXTY9°’s food lover Lilith Hunt-Sheppard went along to try their ‘Spike’ for herself.

I have, in fact, been a fan of Boneyard since its opening at the tail end of 2016 but when I heard that there were some new additions to the menu to sample I was straight down to Granby Street to try them. The sun was blazing down and Boneyard’s front windows were pulled right back to let in the summer air- perfect for a spot of people watching. On arrival, we were greeted by Ed who lead us to our table and immediately guided us through the extensive cocktail menu, recommending drinks to suits our individual tastes. As Ed mixed our cocktails we relaxed and took the time to look at the menu and take in the funky and fierce interior. One of the great things about Boneyard is the amount of choice. The menu features a range of dishes that are available as small or large portions- perfect for a tapas style sharing feast. We decided to try a mix of smaller dishes and ordered Dirty Humm; traditional hummus with harissa, pickles and flat bread; longbone Lamb chops, marinated in yoghurt and spices, and cooked in a clay oven for extra flavour; huge three-joint chicken wings, brined in spices and then twice cooked for extra crispy skin; Crunchy Fish; fresh cod pieces n an airy spicy batter and lightly fried; slow-cooked Ribs in garlic, paprika and Spike sauce; Lamb Chilli Fries with Cheese and freshly prepared Pork scratchings gently warmed in Slaughter sauce and garnished with coriander and chilli. As we tucked in, the flavours hit you instantly. Everything is made fresh on the premises and, if like me, you love spice, then definitely add some of their freshly blended Slaughter Sauce to your order. Being a fan of traditional tandoor food, the chops were packed with authentic flavour with a cheeky after bite of heat. Unlike some spicy food the heat never overpowered the flavour. The ribs were another particular favourite, falling easily off the bone and packed with herbs and spices, the tender meat literally melted in the mouth. The surprise hits for me were the Crunchy Fish bites and Scratchings. Coated in a beautiful batter, the fish was soft, flaky and seasoned to perfection. The Scratchings were beautifully crunchy and moreish - I would personally recommend ordering them on arrival to enjoy as a snack as your meals are being prepared.

Almost defeated with full bellies we weren’t sure there would be room for desserts; until we saw the menu of course! The Dirty Blonde definitely caught my eye; a baked cheesecake with raspberries that proved a great palette cleanser whilst the other half opted for the Salted Caramel Cheesecake – perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. Boneyard has everything a carnivore could ask for; a meatilicious menu, huge portions, great freshly made cocktails all served in a funky venue in a great location. Food that’s packed with punch and flavour with the perfect amount of cheek. They have definitely put their spike in the city!

BIERKELLER BAVARIAN BEER GARDEN Nottingham’s Bavarian-style bar has added an outside element to the three storey bar and restaurant on Friar Lane. Despite being in the heart of the city, the new outdoor space has a lush, tropical feel with a proper lawn and green living walls, like vertical gardens, on both sides. There’s plenty of seating for summer drinkers and some serious outdoor heaters if the night times get a bit fresh. thebierkeller.com

SHED GOOD At only 25 Elisabeth Barker-Carley is fast becoming one of the most influential people on the Midland’s Live Music scene. The driving force behind the re-opening of The Shed, Elisabeth tells us in her own words about how she got into running live music venues...

I finished studying at Ratcliffe College and I guess that university was the next natural step but, in the end, I decided against going - which my dad wasn’t too pleased about. My plan was to go to New York and intern at a recording studio; but it was soon bought to light that I could never afford that on my £5 an hour waitressing job! So, my dad struck up a deal with me. If I agreed to go to university, he would help fund my summer which consisted of three festivals and travelling around Spain. And then if I graduated and got a 1st, he would pay off my loan. I ended up at University College Birmingham studying Marketing with Events Management. Whilst I was studying I got involved with Oxjam and joined the Oxjam Birmingham Takeover team starting out as a bucket shaker and quickly worked my way up the rankings to fundraising manager. When I left university I joined the Oxjam Leicester Takeover team and took over the reins of the www.69-degrees.co.uk

festival, and it’s through this that I gained a lot of the experience and contacts I have now. I couldn’t get a job, so I made my own. I built strong relationships with a few bands and venues, and started to host shows locally as well as manage tours. I was on

gravitate towards owning our own venue. An opportunity arose to take over The Shed, a venue which is very close to my heart. The previous owner is like family to me, and taught me a lot of what I know now. Owning the venue is something I still can’t quite get my around. I often get asked if it is hard being a woman in business and my instant gut reaction is why that should even be a question nowadays.

tour with a French band when I got a phone call from my beloved father. He asked if I still wanted to run a recording studio (following on from a wine fueled conversation a few months prior), and that he knew someone who knew someone who had a space.

One of the main obstacles on a personal level though was a struggle with my mental health, and I think it’s important to be honest about this. When I first started the company, everything I did was with blind hope. And there are a lot of rejections in this industry, and at the beginning that was hard to handle.

That space is now DICP HQ, and now has, as part of the organisation, Gaslight Recording Studios, The Cadence Agency and Apollo Audio and Lighting Hire. It was a natural step for us to then

There were so many times I wanted to quit, to give it all up and have a ‘normal’ life. Now, I have an incredible team who work with me and who pick me up when I stumble over.
