Matte moise lle by FE NTY Since its launch last September Fenty Beauty, the makeup brand launched by Rihanna to offer “something for a dark-skinned girl, something for a pale-skinned girl and everything in-between” has proved a massive hit. The latest offering in the range is a range of matte lipsticks that offer mega rich colour without the weight. “Lipstick is all about having fun and expressing your mood at any given moment” says Rihanna. “This collection makes it easier than ever because there’s a colour for everyone.” High-octane pigment meets 14 unexpectedly universal shades to complement all moods, all skin tones, all day, so whether you’re looking for the perfect red, everyday nude, or moody blue, it’s easier than ever to rock the entire rainbow. Rihanna loves changing up her lipstick depending on her current mood or look, so she hand-picked the range of 14 shades that anyone can pull off, with names that embody the personality of each colour. The ultra slim lipstick has a longwearing, petal-soft matte finish, with a light-as-air texture that glides on creamy and stays put—no bleeding or feathering after application. Just swipe on and go! Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick is available exclusively in stores at Harvey Nichols and online through HarveyNichols.com and fentybeauty.com. www.69-degrees.co.uk

Achieve your best real you without the help of Instagram and Snapchat filters with YUGEN, which has just launched in Birmingham. Sure, it’s a clinic that offers the standard fillers and injectables, but it’s so much more – and you need to know about it, as it’s taking the Midlands’ cosmetic surgery industry and shaking it up by bringing a more holistic, but highly qualified GP-led approach to non-surgical cosmetics, skin corrections and wellness. With their help, you can be your best you with #nofilternecessary…
#NOFILTERNECESSARY Who is Dr Jane Holloran? Well firstly I’m a highly qualified GP, with over 20 years’ experience. What made you get into Aesthetics? I decided to utilise my skills in the Aesthetic field, as I realised that I was very passionate about this arena and I was talented in improving the appearance of facial defects and scarring using simple, non-surgical techniques. I still work as a GP, but have also launched YUGEN, a dedicated clinic that incorporates my skills with some of the most innovative treatments, products and machines within the Aesthetic and medical industry such as Coolsculpting®, Laser and nonsurgical aesthetic treatments. Tell us about YUGEN, how would you describe the clinic/ services? YUGEN is an important concept of Japanese aesthetics. The exact translation of the word www.69-degrees.co.uk
depends on the context, but in this case, it means an ‘awareness of the universe that triggers emotional responses too deep and mysterious for words’. Our aim is to make you feel beautiful from the inside out and feel comfortable in your own skin. Our approach is not about beauty, but about confidence in your own skin. Confidence is the key to beauty and we actively encourage patients to make the best of their own features rather than slavishly follow any celebrity trends. It’s about dealing with those areas that make you feel insecure and helping you become the best you. The Edgbaston clinic is situated in a very convenient location within the Medical district of Birmingham and just minutes from the city centre. We appreciate that everyone has busy schedules, so we are really flexible offering late evenings, weekend and out of hour appointments by special arrangement.
What advice would you give someone considering cosmetic work? Well, at YUGEN, we are different because we try to understand the patient before embarking on a treatment plan. The first thing to do is get in touch for a consultation. I may be a doctor, but I’m human too and have my own insecurities about my body, face, skin and the ageing process. I know what it’s like to have a ‘fat’ or ‘bad hair’ day, so I know how important it is not to make drastic decisions on a day when the world appears to be falling apart. Together, we can go through your requirements and what can and cannot be achieved, so that we build a complete treatment plan for you. The journey to being the best you starts here. YUGEN, Highfield House, 2 Highfield Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham. B15 3ED. Tel 0121 455 6974 or visit them online at yugen-clinic.co.uk

Great Expectations SIX OF THE MIDLAND’S HOTTEST TALENTS www.69-degrees.co.uk
19 KATE BRINKWORTH I have always been fascinated by stories & have a deep love of film which combines the two elements I thrive on the most: imagery and narrative” says artist Kate a graduate in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University. “I started to look in depth at the construction of a film: how do images go together to form a cohesive plot and originally used film scenes to look into this but soon wanted to set up my own stills & I began to collect objects that would enable me to do this, dice, insects, cameras, letters, papers, anything I could find that had a sense of intrigue about it. I then played around with setting up small still lifes, lighting them differently, changing the focal point to emphasize a certain item and then working these into paintings. I became more involved in the process of this, enjoying the translation of light into paint, the properties of pigments and the challenge of photorealism. katebrinkworth.com
OHMME Seeing all the offerings of yoga wear available to women, Louis d’Origny and Jonty Hikmet wondered why guys didn’t have the same range of choice So they set about creating OHMME; a socially friendly, environmentally friendly and conscious company that is disrupting the male sportswear industry. Having regularly practiced yoga but been unable to find clothing they wanted to wear, OHMME was born under the brief of style, movement and comfort. ‘Our fabrics are made with your body, and the planet, in mind. I took a lot of time really investigating

THE WANDERING HEARTS Folk-Americana group The Wandering Hearts are kicking off 2018 with their debut album Wild Silence, out on Decca Records. The band– AJ, Chess, Tara and Tim – recently played Kings Heath’ The Hare & Hounds as a hometown gig for Brummies Tara and Tim. Tara and her family moved to Edgbaston when she was a baby, later living in Moseley. She went to Edgbaston High and Sutton Coldfield Girls School and sang with the Birmingham Opera Company when she

was a child, then the City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Chorus. Tim grew up in Droitwich Spa, attending Droitwich High School and the University of Wolverhampton. Tara and Tim met at a charity gig and hit it off over their love of folk, Americana and vocal harmonies. Mutual friends introduced them to AJ and Chess and The Wandering Hearts were born. Hearing how naturally their four voices blend together, it’s incredible they met almost by chance. A #DMUglobal trip to Silicon Valley inspired final year Computer Science student Kate Lowe to set up Tech Us Together, a group designed to inform and educate graduates into what roles are actually available to them in the tech industry. Kate Lowe explained “I went to university at 28 thinking I would become a “developer”, because that’s the only job title in tech I knew about. After going on an industry year placement and then to Silicon Valley, I realised there are so many different opportunities across technology that I had never

heard of and I wanted to let others know about them too!” TUT is designed to bring together people that want to know more about technology by holding Q&As with speakers that work across all areas of tech and not just the ones you expect. They go into schools, sharing industry experiences with students and inspire them to find out more about careers in technology. Find out more at www.techustogether.co.uk
21 Tim Fowler Contemporary Fine Art graduate Tim Fowler’s paintings are recognisable images distorted with strong colour and abstract elements. “I try to capture something deeper, as opposed to literal representation.” You may have seen Tim and his work at Leicester’s LCB Depot where he displayed himself and the creation of his artwork as an art installation in a work called Observe where he lived ‘observed’ in the building’s gallery space.

Tim uses combinations of acrylic, enamel, gloss, spray paint, ink, graffiti paints, oil sticks and marker pens to create his work alongside techniques including using masking tape, stencilling, broken lines, flat colour, palette knife painting, mark making and the hardest technique making mistakes. Says Tim “I find making mistakes helps me to discover a new sense of direction with a painting, especially if I feel like I've hit a dead end with a particular piece.” www.timjfowler.co.uk

musical The journey to
success…
Over the last year, we’ve been covering the progress of Echo Factory, the specialist music school, based in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter. With even first year music degree students landing regular work, the results are promising. We caught up with students Sim Dorset and Pete Cornell, to discuss their recent experiences… Sim: I’ve just come back from a tour of Germany, singing for Adal, an artist who’s developing a good following there. This was the first time I’ve done the indie/80’s synth vibe, so it was good to be pushed out of my comfort zone. Pete: I recently toured with singer songwriter Yakabo. I got a last-minute call and had to learn the material whilst on holiday! The first gig was on the day I was flying back; I landed at 12pm, had to be at the venue for 2pm and the gig was at 7pm. That night was the first time I played with the band. Fortunately, it went well! What challenges did you face on tour? Sim: Being with a small group of people all day, every day. You’ve got to avoid conflict and keep the peace! Sometimes we’d all start singing to cope with the stress or just sleep! What hits you, is that you have a lot of time to yourself. www.69-degrees.co.uk
Pete: You have to force yourself to be sociable, even when you don’t feel like it. You won’t get repeat work if you can’t get on with people. How did you secure the work? Sim: I’d been working at HQ Recording Studios in Leicester, and the owner put me forward. I had to audition over Skype. So, networking is key? Pete: Absolutely! I’d played with the guitarist before and he put me forward. Often, it’s a case of establishing a personality match, doing a good job and then people spread the word. How has studying at Echo Factory helped? Pete: They’ve really developed my musicianship, I’ve gone from being a drummer to a complete musician. It’s essential for the modern industry. Sim: The tutors really know their stuff, my vocals have really improved and I understand the business a lot more. What advice would you give to those seeking a career in music? Pete: Don’t be arrogant, thinking, `I just want to play guitar`, open yourself to the fact that you’ve got to learn other things. Sim: Gain good business knowledge and always be professional on and off stage. Ready to get ahead in performance, production or business? RAPER’S RECORD With a wry laugh, former Mansun frontman Paul Draper reveals it was a mere quirk of fate that saved his long-awaited solo album from complete oblivion writes Neil Barston.
According to the Liverpool-born singer, the demos earmarked for Spooky Action had frustratingly gathered dust within the depths of his West London studios, seemingly destined for classic ‘lost album’ status. But after finally summoning the courage to revisit these half-realised songs following a successful spell as a producer, it emerged his sound engineer Ben had accidentally taken the album’s fledgling recordings home thinking they were blank DVDs ripe for recording over. “It’s just lucky we had those demos on DVD-R’s that were not a rewritable format, otherwise they would have ended up as Ben’s recording of Arsenal on Match of the Day. If anyone wants to ask him any more about that, he’s now in my band as our guitarist,” says Paul on the curious course of events. While such an ocean of time elapsed since his former output could easily have put paid to the prospects of a return, it seems there was a strong sense of unfinished business surrounding Spooky Action’s emergence. Though it may have been a long and winding road, persistence has paid off with the album gaining critical acclaim and cracking the top 20 charts. Its performance prompting record label Kscope to embark on a major re-issue of Mansun’s back-catalogue over the next 18 months. Significantly, the band’s vocalist has no interest in being viewed as a nostalgia act, though admits the decision to perform and write again was in part inspired by fans’ devotion. This included several high profile conventions over recent years that ensured the music remained in the public’s consciousness. “I suppose I was a studio person as that’s where I’d been for the past 15 years, but I’ve so enjoyed being out doing the live shows again, It’s been quite an adventure,” remarks

records following the group’s demise. Consequently, by Paul’s own admission, “It’s more likely the Beatles would get back together in their original line-up than Mansun,’ though he explains he has had contact with former drummer Andie Rathbone.
He says he owes a debt of gratitude to those who have carried forth the legacy of the band, which at its late 90’s peak stood on the brink of near stadium-sized fame with the success of their first two albums.
Despite the band’s untimely implosion, there were some notable highs, including the chance to meet Paul’s musical hero Prince while touring in the US. As he recalls, it was an all too fleeting encounter in a VIP club lounge, with the Purple Rain songwriter being surrounded by a typically large entourage. He described his shock death as ‘a massive loss to music,’ as was the passing of his other great inspiration, David Bowie.
In recounting those years, he concedes a sense of frustration over their demise surrounding the recording of their fourth album, Kleptomania. Following pressure from fans, it gained a belated release by Parlophone www.69-degrees.co.uk
27 “I’ve always been a Bowie fan, and it was great to be able to support him on his tour of Italy back in 97. One night, he just came backstage to our dressing room, chainsmoking a cigarette and he just said how much he liked our music. He insisted we just call him Dave - he was very disarming, and the consummate performer. It didn’t get much cooler than being able to hang out with him,” adds the Mansun singer of one of his favourite touring memories.
terms is something that he is valuing hugely, as he speaks with real hope for future shows and recording. “What’s been happening the past few months has taken me into a whole new world – the response to the new album has been much bigger than I’d thought.
“It’s been a long while since I’ve played the songs As for his latest band from our debut line-up, he enthuses it’s far more complex than it was first time around, Mansun album, and with keyboards adding to depth of their sound. I think certain They’ve even raided the records last the EMI archives for effects that were used on his test of time, former early recordings that will be placed centrestage for the upcoming which this one tour dates. has done. “It’s been a long while since I’ve played the songs from our debut Mansun album, and I think certain records last the test of time, which this one has done. “For the new tour, this will be the first time that we’ll be playing Attack of the Grey Lantern in its entirety, which we didn’t even manage back in the day. “I’m just pleased that fans have seen the new material as a continuation of what we achieved with Mansun,” explains Paul, who had been refreshingly modest about the prospects of his latest material before its release. While he admits that being on an independent label has meant that the sustained promotion afforded to the likes of solo artists such as Ed Sheeran would never be possible, it’s a situation he is entirely happy with. Being able to pursue his music on his own
“We’re putting out a live album based on London show last year at the Scala, which is taking up all my time right now,” admits Paul, who recalls he managed a few drinks with friends over Christmas before swiftly returning to the studio that has almost become his second home.
The New Year has clearly brought key challenges in preparing to head out across the country. But buoyed by a fresh sense of momentum, Paul enthuses that he’s already penned several tracks towards the follow-up to Spooky Action, and feels in a rich creative vein. For someone who has already achieved so much in their career, you can’t help wonder if there’s anything that he would add to a personal wish list of ambitions? “I think to be honest, I would be fine just being a jobbing version of me, I’m happy just doing what I’m doing right now,” adds the singer who is clearly thriving in a rich vein of songwriting and relishing the prospect of hitting the road once more. WERK WEAR WITH CLARE MAGUIRE
There is something quite pleasurable about turning you mind to a new workwear wardrobe ready for the sunshine. Workwear, like any fashion, offers the possibility of reinvention. Maybe it’s because we’ve all lost a few pounds, maybe it’s because we didn’t (I tried..!). Or perhaps it’s the thought of getting our sun kissed glow back, but our Image courtesy can of Outfit. workwear have an air of next season reinvention. Spring / summer workwear can be a daunting prospect. We ditch our darker, polished clothes and hide our tights away. It’s time to get the razor out. Our heavier, polished
winter outfits can make us feel professional and empowered but it’s time to make way for lighter, brighter business attire. Just like anything in your wardrobe, your workwear should be an extension of your personality. “Workwear is essential to get right and feel fabulous in as it’s usually the part of the wardrobe worn the most”, says Suzy Fawke, who has over 20 years’ experience working in high end ladies wear. “Start with a capsule wardrobe; a basic suit including a dress, jacket, skirt and trousers but add some colour and print.
Coats and jackets might be something you don’t think matter for spring or summer, but April showers might make you change your mind. Don’t underestimate the impact of a good jacket. It’s the first thing people notice and the last thing your colleagues will see when you leave work. Finally, if you’re not brave enough to be so bold, try accessorising to bring the spring into your wardrobe. There are many items that will inject a bit of fun, but are subtle enough to enter the boardroom with. At only £35, this Marks and Spencer classic tassel tote bag is the perfect start to revamping your work wardrobe this season and won’t break the bank. Just like this bag will, let everyone know you’re ready for spring. £39.50

NEW YEAR, NEW ROUTES Start the new year with a break to one of the new destinations on offer, direct from Birmingham Airport. Take 2018 as an opportunity to explore places you’ve never visited and indulge in new experiences.
Further afield Make a short hop over to the other side of the pond with Primera Air and discover the fascinating city of Toronto. Or head East with Air India and discover the Indian cities of Amritsar and Delhi. Accessible fares make these destinations perfect for either a long weekend break or an extended holiday.
INDIA is deliciously
chaotic and worlds away from anything you may have previously experienced, Delhi will arrest your senses and create lasting memories. Immerse yourself in culture and incredible food in this city. To learn about the history of India, a great place to start is at The Red Fort. Following this, jump in a rickshaw and tour the bazaars of Delhi in search of handicrafts, jewellery, clothing and saris. Once you’re ready to escape the hustle and bustle of the street, take a seat and watch the world go by in The Lodi Gardens. Extend your trip by stopping off in Amritsar and let it seduce you with its heritage and beauty. The most spectacular sight is The Golden Temple, one of India’s most serene and spectacular sights. It is Sikhism’s most holy shrine, crafted from marble and gold. www.69-degrees.co.uk
Toronto is a dynamic
and buzzing city with a skyline populated by skyscrapers. Famous for the CN Tower and its stunning 360° views, but home to so much more than the typical tourist traps. With so much to see and do, it is hard to narrow it down to just a few recommendations, but our must-do list includes an afternoon picnic beneath the cherry blossom trees in Trinity Bellwoods Park with a macaroon from Nadege, the best French patisserie in the city. Follow this with a day spent in Toronto’s Annex district, a bohemian neighbourhood full of independent businesses and entertainment venues including the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema and Lee’s Palace, the area’s concert venue. Then either check-out Ossington Avenue and grab a signature bagel from Schmaltz Appetizing or Kensington Market, with its gluten free bakery, burrito bar and vintage shops.
Closer to home
45 Stockholm
If you’d rather stay a little closer to home there are some exciting new destinations in Europe easily accessible from your local airport this summer. Stockholm, Venice, Bodrum and Dubrovnik are all fascinating cities worth exploring if you’ve not had the chance to visit before.
Stockholm, spread across 14
individual islands, has recently found itself regarded as one of the coolest Scandinavian cities to holiday in. Built on the water, Stockholm has an air of calm about it, whilst still being a dynamic and modern city to explore. Brimming with museums and interesting buildings, most notably Skansen, the world’s first open-air museum, you’ll leave the city feeling enriched and inspired.
Venice with its Grand Canal,
Venetian buildings and Basilica di San Marco is on the top of most people’s bucket lists. To do the city justice, you’ll need to spend longer than just a few touristy hours there. Stay for at least a couple of nights in the city itself so you’ve got a chance to venture off the beaten track and discover its quieter, narrow backstreets. You’ll stumble across neighbourhood churches, cafes offering cicheti (Italian tapas) and bistros with a plentiful supply of the infamous Venetian prosecco. The best way to take in the city is from the water. Bypass the expensive gondola trips and have a go at being a gondolier yourself in a lesson with Row Venice, or jump inside a kayak and paddle yourself through the city’s canals.
Dubrovnik, in the still fairly
undiscovered southern part of Croatia, is known for its incredible stone-walled Old Town and picture perfect views across the Adriatic Sea. To get the best bird’s eye view of Dubrovnik climb the city walls either first thing in the

morning or before they close in the evening – the cruise ships will have left the port so the city will be quieter and even more magical. If you are looking to escape the tourists in the peak of the day, Cavtat, just across the bay, is worth a visit. A slightly calmer version of Dubrovnik, with an old Riviera style, the town has a range of harbour front restaurants and bars, and is a perfect boat day trip ride from Croatia’s capital.
Bodrum has managed to retain
its elegance and culture even through its progression to a popular beach holiday destination. Jutting out into the Aegean and home to an impressive castle, lots of mosques and multiple marinas, the city has an exotic feel and is a fascinating place to discover. To enjoy the best of the coast, head about 20 minutes south of Bodrum to Barbaros Bay with its breath-taking panorama views. A more remote spot with white washed buildings and deep azure haze, this is the perfect place to really relax and unwind.
Venice
Bodrum
Getting there From June there will be direct flights from Birmingham to Toronto with Primera Air and you can fly to Amritsar and Delhi direct with Air India. Jet2.com has launched flights to Venice, Bodrum and Dubrovnik for summer 2018 and SAS has recently announced a new direct route to Stockholm from Birmingham starting in April.

TURBULENT TIMES P’S REFLECTED IN THE RE SPRING SEASON
The REP’s new season starts the year with a variety of dramatic highs that will live on in the minds of audiences long after the applause has settled down.
“New times call for new ways of presenting stories and I am pleased to welcome back one of Europe’s most exciting directors, Calixto Bieito, with an ambitious new work, The String Quartet’s Guide To Sex and Anxiety, featuring live music from The Heath Quartet. “For this season I’m particularly thrilled to welcome back two playwrights who have been important figures in The REP’s history: Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s latest play, Elephant premièred in February and playwright, David Edgar, marks his debut as a performer, with the auto-biographical, Trying It On.”
The Theatre’s Artistic Director, Roxana Silbert, tells us how stories told across The REP’s three stages mirror and examine the stormy age in which we live.
The REP also offers a special ticket price for people aged 14-30. Preview Club encourages young people to attend more theatre, more regularly. It’s FREE membership offering £5.00 tickets on selected preview performances.
Roxana said: “This season we are reflecting the increasingly turbulent times we live in with stories that

Brigsby Bear Saturday Night Live’s Kyle Mooney wrote and stars in this charming story about the show “Brigsby Bear Adventures” a slightly sinister eighties children’s television program produced for an audience of one: James. When the series abruptly ends, James’ life changes forever as he sets out to finish the storyline himself. To do that, he must learn how to cope with the realities of a new world that he knows nothing about. We cried. Lots.

66 other. “At one point, I started giving my dad some interior design advice about having the desk at a particular angle by the window and he said ‘why don’t you get your own house?’ There’s a little bit of tension around. Still, there are some changes afoot in Tom’s life and the good news is that he’s passed his driving test at the third attempt. “I had a lovely two to three years of learning; it was like another degree and I feel very happy that I can drive. What I want to talk about in the show is that sense of moving forward. I think a lot of people experience those around them running ahead and sometimes if you’re not in the same boat as them (if you’re not getting married or not owning your own home) you can feel a bit left out. For me, I wonder, well, is what they’re doing necessarily better? So, I’ll talk about weddings and some hen parties that I’ve been invited to. I don’t quite know when that started, when gay men began to be invited to hen dos. I don’t think lesbian hen dos invite a straight bloke along so they can sit in front of Sky Sports.”
ABSOLUTELY TOM ALLEN If you’ve availed yourself of any TV panel show lately you are sure to have seen Tom Allen pop up- simply one of the most erudite acts in British comedy, this man’s profile, and no doubt his dander, is up! Never happier than when he’s tossing out quotes from the poet William Henry Davies or lyrics from the movie Grease, Tom is positively purring about his upcoming tour of the land for new show, Absolutely, coming to Curve 15 April and Warwick Arts Centre on 26 April. And early preparations have been proceeding most agreeably. “I like to do a preview around the house, maybe for some teddy bears: they’re a gay social grouping that I know. You want it to feel fresh and invent around it and add things and you want to be relaxed about it. Last year I talked a lot about things in my past and this time I wanted to do something about my present which admittedly remains dogged by my past because I’m still living with my parents.” Living at home with his parents will inevitably lead to some friction, no matter how much they love each
www.69-degrees.co.uk
You’d have assumed that having passed his driving test, a sense of liberation, freedom and extra bon vivant would have washed over Tom as he took to the open roads of the United Kingdom. Not a bit of it. “Because I couldn’t afford my own insurance on a car, I got insured on mum and dad’s Ford Fiesta Zetek. The boot doesn’t open, which is not a euphemism. The car is maroon which is great because it goes with nothing, and so clashes no matter what I wear. There’s moss on the back windows and the wing mirrors are being held on by gaffer tape. To quote from the song Greased Lightning, it’s a real pussy wagon.” Motoring issues aside, as someone who clearly has a deep love of language, you can imagine Tom joyfully revelling in the discovery of new words. “I do like words. I learned the word esoteric just the other day: ‘that which is created or delivered for a specific audience or an audience with a specific reference point’. I don’t know if I’m esoteric; I think I’d like to think I was, but in reality I’m actually very ordinary. But isn’t that the thing, it’s the game we all play, the secret we all hide is that we’re actually the same as everybody else. I do say the word ‘absolutely’ quite a lot and last year I called my show Indeed. They’re just words for saying yes, and it is important to say yes to things and to live life to the full as much as one can.” Get tickets at tomindeed.com
