CTATIONS 2019 has been Mabel’s year. With the phenomenal success of single ‘Don’t Call Me Up’, which spent 8 weeks in the top 10, and is already the 7th biggest-selling single of 2019 and top 10 on Spotify’s global charts (where Mabel is the highest-charting British female) we caught up with her ahead of the launch of her first album, High Expectations, and the start of a season of festival performances and upcoming tour with Khalid.
I
t’s the Friday before a Bank Holiday and Mabel has a busy weekend of gigging ahead of her.
“I’ve got to go to the doctors. I’ve been really unwell and I have two shows tomorrow. It’s a bit of nightmare because the antibiotics they put me on has given me a rash all over my body. It’ll get sorted but yeah, not a good start to the weekend. So how did the Mabel story begin? I mean the musical Mabel story! Well I’ve been making music since I was a kid so that has always been around. I think I was just doing it for myself for a long time and then when I was about 18, I was like I’m going to put a song out on Soundcloud, then about a month later I signed my first record deal for Universal. Your parents are music industry big hitters - Neneh Cherry and Cameron McVey - so was it a bit of a foregone conclusion that you were going to go into music? It was quite a musical childhood, I mean there was no pressure, it was always around and it was encouraging and inspiring but it kind of just happened.
Were you always at festivals and backstage at concerts when you were growing up? For sure and I always enjoyed it but when you’re a kid you don’t see your environment as strange in anyway; you’re just doing whatever you’re told to do. Like now I get my own time in the studios and tour buses and everything, that’s all cool but also when I was a kid that was just my life. It was normal. I didn’t reflect on it too much. Now I think about it and it’s so nice to be around so many creative people. You’re very creative yourself – am I right in that you write all of your own material? Yeah, I write all the time. When I’m by myself I start little ideas and I’m writing down everything, always looking at things that are going on in my life and what’s happening around me. I then go to the studio with people that I enjoy making music with and we turn them into songs. I love writing by myself but I’m also a fan of the co-write. I enjoy where you can take things if there’s more than one creative in the room, you think differently. I know one of the songs on the album is called OK (Anxiety Anthem). Is anxiety something that you’ve suffered with? Yeah, for sure. I’ve been quite open about www.69-degrees.co.ukk
19
20 it because I guess there is a lot of stigma around talking about it and making people feel like being emotional is weak and I don’t think that is true. I’ve taken it in my stride and made it into some cool things like songs. If you can look at anxiety as not being something that you run from, you know it’s there and you’re still gonna do what you need to do. It’s me realising that actually you probably will be anxious, you’re always going to have good and bad days, so just be OK with the bad ones.
the expectations I’ve had of myself which have been positive for me in many ways because it means ambition and drive and it’s definitely got me to where I am but then I look at the flipside of that; you know the anxiety and the pressure I put on myself.
People have always said about suffering with anxiety but actually it’s about living with anxiety. You’ve got a really busy Summer of live performances and the big tour with Khalid. Is that a really brave thing for someone with anxiety to do? To say yes I’m doing this, I know I’m going to be anxious but I’m just going to get on with it. It’s the best way to be. I used to have a lot of anxiety about performing, the way I’ve gotten over that is just being OK with my nerves and just doing it all the time. Saying yes to every gig.
That’s kind of what the whole journey was and I wanted to flip that as many times as I could and look at it from every possible angle. For somebody that lacked a lot of confidence growing up that has been one of the biggest confidence building experiences ever.
Do you have any pre-stage rituals that you do? No nothing weird, just have a good time with my dancers. Your new album is coming out in July, High Expectations. Is that High Expectations of yourself or of other people… It’s every way you can look at that name. That’s what the whole album is about. It’s
www.69-degrees.co.uk
I looked at high expectations that I put on relationships; I always set the bar too high and now with what I’m doing I guess the expectations that people have of me as well.
That’s what I want people to take from the record - if there is one message I could send it’ll be that. You know I want people to feel really good about themselves because I feel better about myself since I wrote it. What can the listeners expect from the rest of the album; we’ve had a mixtape come out from you and we’ve had numerous singles. Are we going along the same sort of lines? I feel like it’s uptempo, upbeat, like I said I want people to feel good so even the songs that are deep, I think you can still move to them which is cool. I think what you’ve heard in the last year gives you a pretty
good idea of where the album’s going. There is some different stuff as well like the way that Don’t Call Me Up was a sort of evolution of music. There’s some exciting stuff to come that I think is a little bit unexpected. Don’t Call Me Up has become such a defining song for 2019, do you still get goose bumps or excited when you’re in a shop and your music comes on or if you’re in a club or a bar? Yeah, always, it’s so cool, still. I don’t know when or if I’m going to get over that. Before things had been released, I enjoyed listening to them with my friends and stuff. When I’ve released them, I feel like they’re other people’s in a nice way but I kind of stop listening to them when they’re out. Are you more comfortable in the studio than you are on the stage or do you take different things from both parts of the job? It’s different experiences, it depends where you are at. Sometimes I’m like God I have lots of feelings and emotions that I don’t really want to be around people and I want to be inside writing. Then you spend a long time in the studio, like I have for the last couple of years, I’m just ready to not talk about my feelings for a few months and just be out and about singing the songs and having fun. The tour at the end of this year with Khalid is very exciting. Are there any collaborations that you’ve
21
“
I’m ready to not talk about my feelings for a few months and just be out and about singing the songs and having fun.
”
www.69-degrees.co.ukk
22 done on the album or any more collaborations coming up? There’s a Kamille feature on my album, she’s an incredible artist and an incredible songwriter. To be honest with you, I’ve done lots of features on tracks and I really wanted this album to be mine. The exception was the song with Kamille because we wrote the song together and when I heard her singing it, I was like Oh I need to be on this it’s just a fun song. We could have reached out to some rapper that I don’t know and be like hey come jump on this tune and send it me from America or whatever and yeah sure, maybe at one point I’ll wanna do that, but for this album I wanted to make it with, and collaborate with people that I knew on a personal level and really love. Is there anyone out there that is a dream collaborator? Pharrell would be like my dream. You’re song writing is so strong, do you write for other people as well? Sometimes I’ll just write songs that I know aren’t necessarily for me that maybe something will happen with them but the album has really been taking up literally 100% of my time for pretty much the last two and a half years. I haven’t gone in to sessions thinking oh we’re writing for this person but I’d love to at some point. Releasing the album right in the middle of summer means it’s gonna forever be associated with
www.69-degrees.co.uk
amazing summer holiday memories for a lot of listeners. Is there a song that immediately snaps you back to an amazing time in your life? I think that first Kehlani mixtape called You Should Be Here was very defining for me. I
can’t remember what year it came out, maybe 2015 but I’d just moved to London and I remember hearing and being like Yes, R&B is coming back! High Expectations is out on the 12th July.

BOTTLE BLOND STUDIOS Coventry University graduate Chloe Hollingsworth had a dream one night that she made a jacket, entirely out of tinsel, she knew from there she had to turn her dream into a reality and immediately started drawing out the design to make it. Chloe started Bottle Blond Studios in her bedroom in 2016 and as more and more people became aware of the brand and her unique and fun designs, she knew she couldn’t do it alone, so enlisted the help of fashion student interns at Coventry University. Fast forward 3 years and the brand now has its own studio in the city, they’ve had to move several times to bigger studios to keep up the constant flow of orders from across the globe and celebrity clients including Jessie J and most recently Lady Gaga. Chloe said “Getting asked by Gaga’s team to create a jacket just for her was such a big deal for myself and the brand, especially considering how much of a fan girl I am! ”
THE FIVE HUNDRED
Formed back in 2014, Nottingham’s The Five Hundred have been gaining momentum and a huge following filling the floors of any music venue they perform in. Since their debut on the local music scene they have performed extensively as far as Moscow, Germany and London as well as at big festivals such as Tech Fest, Euro Fest and MacMillan Fest. Made up of John, Paul, Mark, Andy and Kelsey, The Five Hundred is a Midland’s answer to Alice in Chains; a whirlwind of blood, sweat and energy and definitely get the crowd’s adrenaline levels going through the roof. Wherever these guys go intense guitar riffs, deep powerful vocals with screamo energy and full-on manic performances follow. With two albums already under their belts; The Veil and their new album Bleed Red, this year they supported SHVPES on their UK tour and are appearing at the Camden and Rabid Fest’s later this year. For further listening pleasure check out Oblivion, Smoke & Mirrors and Bleed Red. Keep you eyes on this lot, they are on the road to bigger things. Written by Adam Humphreys.
Chloe’s designs are now sold on multiple platforms, including We Koko, Silk Fred and Asos Marketplace and started her business with zero finance in place so sought help from The Prince’s Trust and still works with the charity today showing what can be achieved with a dream, some tinsel, and a lot of hard work. www.bottleblondestudio.com www.69-degrees.co.ukk
26 and did some bar work, but I knew I needed to get into the film industry, so I kept trying until I managed to get a job on a set working as a PA.
MEGAN O’CONNELL
“I was able to see what life would be like from inside the industry and it just made me want to make films even more. I asked around, trying to work out how I could learn this craft and someone recommended going to a specialist film school. I know MetFilm School has a great reputation, but I chose the school because of the experience that I had on the Open Day. I was made to feel so welcome, I was reassured and everyone was really friendly. I felt comfortable straight away and no-one had any expectation that I should know what I was doing. Megan has now created her first short film. Based on a true story and set in Derby 1959, Megan’s film ‘A Mother’s Ruin’ tells the story of Beatrice, a 21 year old off-license owner, who discovers she's pregnant out of wedlock and who does what she must in order to get her boyfriend Arnie, a 30 year-old football coach for Derby County, to propose - even if it means emotionally blackmailing him.
Younger sister of Jack O’Connell, 23 year old Megan O’Connell from Derby is following her brother to Hollywood but staying strictly behind the cameras. A first-year student at London’s MetFilm School studying the BA in Practical Filmmaking, Megan first got the filming bug when being taken along to watch her brother shoot episodes of Skins. “I think it was then I decided www.69-degrees.co.uk
that’s what I wanted to do. I remember looking around and thinking how do you learn to do these things? Where do these people go to school to learn all this?” Megan, who is from Derby dropped out of Sixth Form during her first year. “It just couldn’t offer what I wanted, I knew I was wasting everyone’s time. I had a few jobs, I worked in Top Shop
Megan explains: “I only learnt of the story recently, and I want to do it justice – it hit me quite hard. I hadn’t really appreciated how harshly women were judged and the total lack of support a woman could expect if she ‘got caught’. I really want the film to be historically accurate – I love history almost as much as I love film and the first scene starts with an old Roberts radio broadcasting the 3-nil defeat of Derby County in a football match with Middlesbrough.”

RORY LONGDON
Nottingham Trent Fashion Knitwear graduate Rory Longdon was awarded the Gold Award at Graduate Fashion Week in 2011, and has since gone on to pioneer his own fashion brand, MRC Knitwear in Italy. “Winning the Gold Award was an incredible experience” and something he never expected to win, especially with a knitwear collection. He said, “I received mentoring sessions as part of the prize, these helped me begin to think about my future in the industry and what paths to take. My mentors helped me make some decisions as to where to take my career at that moment.” As a recent graduate, Rory relocated to Italy to work with MaxMara group, before moving to New York to produce and design knitwear for Belstaff. Rory has used each opportunity
presented to him, as well as the lessons and skills he picked up at university as a platform to pioneer his own brand, MRC Knitwear. A year later, he returned to Italy and began working for himself and consulting for different clients. “After working inside companies, I soon realised the creative part of knitwear was quite limited. I really enjoy being hands-on when I work, so finding myself in a grey corporate office on Fifth Avenue in New York without even a single cone of yarn… I knew I had to return back to having a knitting machine and being creative.” Rory said.
they work on their own collection and various projects for different clients. Rory said: “My collections are definitely very textile led. I love developing new stitches and interesting techniques with my technician. We are always trying new developments, so they naturally become the starting point to the collections.” Ahead of this year’s GFW, Rory says: “This opportunity only comes once, so work really hard! Be very creative but also commercial!”
Shortly after his return to Italy, Rory met his business partner and collaborator and they started the studio MRC Knitwear where www.69-degrees.co.ukk

As soon as the sun made an appearance I hit the streets and I was greeted with summer finery at its best! Prints were a major story with everything from animal print to beautiful delicate botanicals. Colours were bright with neon taking center stage. Pink was everywhere, from pastel all the way through to the boldest cerise. Chic and simple utility looks have made it from the catwalks of fashion week on to the streets too. Here’s a few of the stand out looks I spotted, let the summer reign supreme!

LIFE AFTER LOVE ISLAND KAZ CROSSLEY is a great fit for me because I love all things beauty. Not only do they have an amazing range of nails with lots of designs that are super easy but I also love their lashes. They make me feel so glam and put together.
With everybody’s favourite guilty pleasure dating show Love Island about to return, we caught up with former finalist and make-up artist, Kaz Crossley about the show and her role as KISS Product’s newest brand ambassador. How did the opportunity for Love Island come about? They contacted me through my Instagram. I had a lot of bikini pics up from travelling which they probably loved haha! Did you have any expectations going in to show? Not really. I thought I would last a couple of days so I was really overwhelmed to go as far as I did! How has that experienced changed your life? It has given me so many opportunities with my career! It’s hard being in the public eye but I guess it is completely worth it for me as I have done so many amazing things since leaving the show which I'm so grateful for. Do you keep in touch with www.69-degrees.co.uk
anyone from the show? My closest pals are Ellie and Laura. Is there a lot of pressure to constantly look flawless during the show? Yes I guess there is as the cameras are literally on you 24/7! But you start to not care the longer you stay there for. Have you watched it all back? No I haven't watched a single episode... I guess I want to keep my own memories. There is obviously a lot of talk about the after care from reality tv, what was your experience like? I was very supported. It’s hard to prepare for how much it will change your life as you are the only person who will be able to experience it. What would your advice be for someone looking to take part in a reality tv programme? Have fun and enjoy it. You recently became an ambassador for KISS Nails and Lashes, what do you love most about the brand? I’m so excited to be the NEW brand ambassador for KISS Products! I feel like KISS
Which is your favourite product of theirs for the summer season? As a make-up artist, I’ve used a lot of false lashes and it’s really difficult to find light weight lashes that deliver a dramatic, fluttery look! KISS Lashes are perfect with such a big range, there’s something to match every make-up look. From the nail ranges I love the NEW Masterpiece Nails, they look so beautiful and on-trend. They’re really bold so add a bit more drama to any look. You’re a make-up artist, is that something you’ve always wanted to do? Literally since I was about 15, I got addicted to watching YouTube and it all began from there. Do you have a top make-up tip/ trick you can share with us? I always say skin preparation is key! Make sure your skin is nice and cleansed, the more moisturiser the better, it’ll help your make up will last longer! What are your top 5 summer beauty essentials? Lip balm with SPF, coconut oil, imPRESS Nails, highlighter and bronzer. Are there other opportunities and avenues you’d like to explore in your career? I would love to do more work relating to travel, I absolutely love exploring new countries so that would be a dream.

Invest in your hair’s condition! Shinier is better as the days get lighter and with increased sun damage from trips abroad a mustinvest-in product is UV protection. The effect of the sun can be very damaging to the moisture balance of both coloured and natural hair. Umberto Giannini Beach and Indulge products offer great protection and moisture balancing for this reason. Try twice a week using a mask on dry hair 30 minutes before you shower and feel the difference.
ENDS R T R I A H R E M M SU From Ryan Drew, Technical Director at Umberto Giannini, Newall Street, Birmingham As the nights get lighter so does our hair, at this time of year we all look to using lighter shades in our makeup, clothes and hair. Now is the perfect time to push some brightness in your tresses. Balayage was a trend that's now become the norm, natural blended looks are easy way to take you lighter without changing your natural colour, always try and use the base of your natural colour to offer your look an enhancement not change. Adding these lighter and blended hues to your natural colour gives you the lighter more youthful feel to your hair and face. Blending the lightness higher or lower can give you subtle or more daring versions of the same look. Think Cara Delevingne’s soft cool
tones, to Jessica Alba’s rich brunette hues; balayage does not have to mean blonde. Keeping the natural look can still be different. Why not add tone to your natural base? Pink blushes and pearl tones can be added to blonde looks whilst rich ambers and rose blush tones to brunettes. Lighter does not mean bleaching: subtle tones can be added to your summer look by using tints giving up 3 shades lighter, this is a much softer look and less damaging to your hair giving you a more sun kissed look.
The natural pH of our hair is acidic. Over time this can change with lightening and hair colour add a gloss which can add shine and tone, this will neutralise the Ph balance giving you back beautiful hair that was once dull and coarse. This also works great when your hair has been lightened by the sun and this gives you an opportunity to enhance or soften the results with the brightness and tone. Beautiful honest colour looks are king this summer and styling is no different. Lose the blow dry finishing and embrace the natural feel of your hair. Give your locks back some movement and try to disrupt the norms with some salt sprays, light mouse and an air dried feel as seen at London Fashion Week shows for SS19 from Lorenzo Serafini and Etra. For big nights our guide is be bold or go home. Try some gel to move hair away from the face and give a polished glass like sheen to the top or your hair. Social media trends are easy to copy but don’t necessarily suit everyone. Copying is not the point this season however making the best version of you should always look and feel right.

GET IN With more than 25% of adults having at least one tattoo, it’s one of the biggest growing parts of the UK beauty industry so why are so many of us still so scared about making that first trip to the tattooist?
“I think the traditional tattoo experience is intimidating” says Neil Anderson, owner of the off grid, bespoke tattoo art studio Inkling, based at Leicester’s Phoenix Arts in the heart of the Cultural Quarter. “You have this mental image of biker gangs, of thrash metal blasting out and dark, smoky shops, lined with sticky folders full of old school designs with the sound of a needle buzzing away behind a closed door. And, to be fair, that is what a lot of it was like but things are very different now.” He’s not wrong. Sat talking to Neil in the light, airy Inkling studio and you could be in an art gallery. A double height picture window let’s light stream into the open plan workroom. Original art covers the walls and Spotify plays a random, rotating playlist of 90s indie, 80’s disco, jazz, funk and a little bit of rock for good measure. A professional tattooist for over twenty years, he shares the space with two other artists, Katie and Michelle, both specialists in their own arenas. The atmosphere is relaxed, lighthearted, conversational and creative. Neil has combined his training in design and fine art with the traditional tattoo skills learnt during his apprenticeship with next generation seaside tattooist, Shamanic Body Art and has gained a reputation, not only for the quality of his work, but for his ability to freehand draw designs direct onto skin and create works that are truly unique and original. “We do have traditional paper books here” he laughs, “Most people just use their phones nowadays and come in with pretty specific designs that they’ve seen and want to recreate or to use as inspiration. We will help pull together something for them based exactly on what they want.” “We have a balanced mix of female and male clients, though it tends to fall more to the female side partially because we have two female artists here, Katie and Michelle, but also because we have quite a caring attitude towards our clients, their needs and desires. We’re all very laid back, lots of cups of tea, plenty of biscuits and laughs, whatever helps you through” What advice would Neil give to anyone looking to get their first tattoo, start a big piece or undertake a coverup? “First thing is don’t be intimidated or led by anyone but yourself, a modern studio will undertake a consultation process for a big or bespoke

NKLINGED piece of work to help you understand what is possible and what is involved in the process. They should make you feel comfortable with what you are getting and who is doing it. Feel free to look at their work, ask questions, don’t feel as though you have to make your mind up there and then. Some of the process grows as you go, as you learn how different artist like to work; it’s not like any other shopping experience. Check out the vibe of the studio and be openminded; you carry the memories of your experience as much as you carry the images we introduce to your skin so it’s got to be right for you. Generally, when you find a tattooist you trust, you tend to stick with them, it’s a bit like starting a relationship, so choose wisely.

Cross the bridge into Penang Island and you can immediately see why this stunning state of Malaysia is a UNESCO world heritage site writes Jonathan Fraser. We were staying in George Town, named after George III, which features street after street of stunning Victorian and Edwardian buildings, many in disrepair but all, we are told, highly valued. Penang was shaped by British colonialism, beginning with the acquisition of Penang Island from the Sultanate of Kedah by the British East India Company in 1786. Penang ripples with history from the canon lined waterfront, the wooden stilt houses of the Clan Jetties and the many ornate ex government buildings with perfectly manicured cricket www.69-degrees.co.uk
pitches that sit before them. You can fill days just wandering round George Town’s historic streets, bustling with rickshaws and Teh Tarik (a delicious sweet tea made with condensed milk) stands on every corner. We were lucky enough to stay within one of these historic buildings; The Hotel Areca has been created from a row of shops with each of the ground floor rooms still featuring the heavy oak shop door and beautiful, coloured, pressed glass windows. High ceilings, ornate tiled floors, ceiling fans, dark wood furniture and long plumed palms adorn this beautifully calm hotel that’s perfectly positioned for those who want to explore the old town around them.
Penang has an incredibly strong vintage vibe, shops, cafes, restaurants and bars all look back to their colonial roots and the huge amount of street art, many of which integrate 3D props like vintage bicycles for a retro ride; perfect for a selfie stop or two. You can continue the vintage feel by travelling up Penang Hill by traditional funicular, although the old wooden trolleys of the past have now been replaced by modern, ultra-fast carriages. Penang Hill was home to the British Army due to it being cooler in the clouds than in the town and many grand old residents still exist. Nowadays Penang Hill is a spectacular place to view the city from and home to every form of entertainment you could possibly imagine. From afternoon teas to snake

Bar Seventy Seven- with live guitar accompanied open mic sessions – or karaoke when we got up to take part; and we’d also recommend dinner at Mews Café, a small informal eatery with excellent cocktails and deliciously spicy satay.
handling lessons and earthquake simulators, Penang Hill has it and is sure to keep family visitors amused. We visited The Habitat, a jungle reserve area and eco visitor centre home to a vast array of exotic wildlife including giant black squirrels (sweet!) and tarantulas (less sweet). The centre point of the Habitat is a giant walkway above the treetops which offer amazing views across the city. If Penang Hill has given you a head for heights make sure you head back into George Town and visit The Top at the KomTar tower. An entertainment resort with an amazing glass floored walkway that overhangs the 86th floor for you to terrify yourself with. For those feeling even braver the GravityZ experience lets you walk and zip wire round
the outside of the 86th floor of the building – weather permitting! Less Daredevil entertainment is available in the rest of The Top including some amazing ride on dinosauars that we all had our eye on but were sadly too old to play on! Best bring the kids to this one. The trend for Hidden bars continues in Penang with the George Town area offering a huge array of places to discover and enjoy. We particularly enjoyed 63 Magazine, a sumptuous space with live music, hidden away behind what appears to be an abandoned shop front; press the wooden panel on the left and a door will open… Other night time highlights include the incredibly friendly
Penang, and George Town itself, was the perfect place for us to end our Malaysian adventure. As a tourist destination it ticks every box and is suitable for backpackers, intrepid explorers, laid back couples and family adventurers thanks to the huge range of activities and experiences on offer. We’ve fallen for it, hard, and we think you will too. Get the cocktails in, we’ll see you at 63 Magazine…

Naples
Despite its slightly shabby exterior, the city has a thriving art scene, energetic street life, and tasty cuisine.
Make sure to leave plenty of room in your suitcase as retail therapy is as distinctive as the city itself. In Via Toledo, there is one of the longest shopping streets in Naples. With an abundance of boutiques, a department store, and big chains, you can reach Via Toledo on the metro line - get off at the Toledo stop, one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world.
It’s not too late to book that summer break Summer is creeping up, but you still haven’t finalised that summer holiday. Check out these amazing destinations that you can easily reach from Birmingham Airport. Morocco, Naples, Split, and Budapest are all fascinating places worth exploring so get ready to immerse yourself in something completely new.
Morocco
The gateway to Africa, Morocco provides epic mountain ranges, ancient cities, sweeping deserts, and the warmest welcome. Kick off your trip with a visit to The Sahara Desert. Probably the most well-known and the biggest hot desert www.69-degrees.co.uk
which can be explored from numerous places in Morocco. The huge dunes of Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, are sights not to be missed. Camel trekking, camping, and photography are among the area’s top activities. Although Morocco isn’t necessarily known for its drinking scene, that doesn’t mean your visit has to be totally dry. Marrakech offers themed bars and rooftop getaways meaning this diverse desert wonderland is more than able to quench that thirst. Enjoy a cocktail or two accompanied by traditional Moroccan dishes at Le Tanjia. Based in the heart of the city and set over 3 floors with a courtyard, eat, drink and be entertained by glamorous belly dancers.
You can’t visit Naples, the birthplace of pizza, without eating at least one. Head to Sorbillo, perhaps the best pizza in the city. Sorbillo is renowned for making vast pizzas from organic Campanian produce. Our advice is to get there early. The queue to get into Sorbillo can take up to 1½ hours but is worth the wait!

restaurants nearby, you’ll be spoilt for choice where to dine for lunch. For some authentic Mediterranean cuisine with a lazy atmosphere enjoy Konoba Matoni.
Split
Rivalling Italy for pristine beaches and summer climate is Croatia. Don’t waste a minute of your break, drop your bags at your accommodation and head out to explore. Bright, clean and welcoming, the ancient Dalmatian city of Split is a beautiful place to take a stroll around, observing the historic buildings, as well as the Roman ruins of Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St. Dominus. Make an early start to navigate through Diocletian’s Palace when it’s least crowded. Considered to be one of the most impressive Roman ruins, Diocletian’s Palace is undoubtedly the main attraction of Split. Just a short walk from Split old town is Bacvice Beach whihc is perfect for sunbathing or swimming in calm, warm waters. With plenty of bars and
Budapest
Hungary’s capital city is as hip as it is historic. Whether you’re into culture, love the outdoors or are a night owl, Budapest has a host of things to see and do. In Buda you can visit Castle Hill and the Fisherman’s Bastion offering a great view of the city. Not to mention, the architecture of the terrace itself, which is remarkable to see. From the Bastion’s terrace and its seven towers, you’ll be treated to an unobstructed view of the Hungarian Parliament Building, the Danube, the city of Pest, and Gellért Hill. Known as the ‘City of Baths’, Budapest is blessed with plenty of hot springs. After your morning coffee and tasty pastry from a local café, check out Széchenyi Baths, located in City Park. By day, the perfect place to chill out and
get to know locals; by night, the baths host club nights, every Saturday. If you’re into trip-hop and funk music and enjoy a pool party, then this is your chance to try something unique. Pay a visit to the Great Market Hall, the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest. Leisurely browse around the food stalls and chow down on small dishes. Rest your feet in the Rabbit Hole Bar & Café- a small bar with a big personality and most importantly… great cocktails!
Getting there Fly direct from Birmingham Airport to these destinations with a variety of airlines. These destinations are perfect for a last minute, mini getaway with flight durations from as short as 2 hours and 30 minutes from Birmingham. For Naples, fly into Pisa Airport and take a short transfer to the city.

Already on air in the states, expect Season 2 to land on to iPlayer round about ... now.

The Fear Bubble: Harness Fear and Live without Limits - Ant Middleton
GO SEE :THE COLOUR PURPLE Running at Curve, Leicester from 28 June – 13 July and Birmingham Hippodrome from 16 – 20 July, the Tony AwardWinning Musical tells the unforgettable story of courageous heroine Celie, as she journeys through joy, despair, anguish and hope in her own personal awakening to discover her unique voice in the world. With a score drawing inspiration from jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, this moving family chronicle set in racially divided southern America, celebrates life, love and the strength to stand up for who you are and what you believe in.
Ant Middleton may be a stranger to a razor but he’s no stranger to fear: as a point man in the Special Forces, he confronted fear on a daily basis. In prison, he was thrust into the unknown, isolated with thoughts of failure and dread for his future and at the top of Everest he was forced to face up to his greatest fear, of leaving his children and wife without a father and husband. Here he writes about how to harness the power of fear and understand the positive force that it can become and allow us all to break through our limits.

RADIO-ACTIVE Listening to music while you work is not a new thing, going back to the 1940s there was a dedicated BBC radio show for factory workers, called Music While You Work. Even then music was recognised for helping you through your working day.

These days, although many people are listening to music via their own devices such as smartphones, the latest Rajar figures show that 22% of people are still listening to the radio at work! In fact, approximately 2 million more people in the UK listen to the radio now than they did 10 years ago, with the average listener tuning in for over 20 hours per week. 1
And don’t just take our word for it, Pablo Ettinger, co-founder of Caffe Nero says of playing music to help motivate staff: ‘Later in the evening we play much more upbeat music when staff are clearing because it makes them feel good. In the morning before the customers get there we try and play something that’s more upbeat as well when staff are getting going in the morning.’
It is probably no surprise that music can make workers more motivated. A survey of more than 4,500 people found that 79% were more productive at work when listening to music.5 It is also believed that music
Workplaces which play the radio (or any music) will usually need TheMusicLicence. If you are listening at work without
a licence, don’t panic! You can arrange a licence easily through PPL PRS. After PPL PRS’s operating costs, the money you pay for your licence goes back to the artists you listen to every day. And not just the global superstars. It also goes to the session musicians, the up and coming bands who play in your local pub, the unknown song writers who work in the background on tracks you love. TheMusicLicence is the only licence that allows you to legally listen to over 3 million tracks, via your devices, CDs, the radio and the TV. Without TheMusicLicence you would literally have to contact the rights owners of each song to get permission to play it. So, what are you waiting for? Apply for TheMusicLicence today and put the beat back into your business. https://www.rajar.co.uk/docs/news/RAJAR_ DataRelease_InfographicQ42018.pdf Survey carried out by YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2004 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 19th - 20th December 2018. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+). 3 PPL’s most played artists charts are compiled from music usage and airplay data from radio stations and television channels as well as public performance locations such as pubs, clubs, bars, jukeboxes and shops all across the UK. https://www.ppluk.com/ about-us/reports-and-statements/ 4 http://ukairplaychart.com/uk/year_to_ date/ 5 Dr Anneli Haake, ‘The sound of productivity report’, 2010 1
