MAKE YOUR OWN KIND OF MUSIC GET A HEAD START IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY I’m currently knitting a bobble hat. I’ve gone wrong three times and it’ll probably be misshapen, but I’ll wear it with pride because it’ll be my creation. It’ll be unique. Perfect for keeping snug as I crunch through jewelled leaves or for protecting my music-loving ears (and earphones) from snow. An oversized beanie should also dampen the sound of the “Now That’s What I Call Festive Fodder” album that’s been booming from every store since October. Bring on the new generation of musicians to brighten up winter with some refreshing tunes! If you’re an aspiring performer, producer or music business professional but life is like a stuck record, it’s time to plan how you’re going to achieve your music career dreams. Why not dodge the frantic elbow-barging shoppers, seek sanctuary with a soul-warming hot chocolate and start goalsetting for 2018? Sometimes it’s in these quiet, reflective moments of darker days when we look to glimmers of light for the future. If music is your passion, there’s a specialist music school in Leicester ready to help turn your ambition into a career reality. Sixty9° popped in to find out how the new term’s going… At Echo Factory, we find the latest promising degree students in full swing; determined to www.69-degrees.co.uk
absorb and apply the expert knowledge and skills imparted by their industry professional tutors. Performance students are already getting paid work on stages across the city and music business students are developing entrepreneurial skills through managing projects within the creative industries. Director of Studies, Piers Nicholls, told us: “An Echo Factory degree is proof of engagement with the key challenges of working in music. Technical know-how, up-todate techniques and tools, as well as creative and ‘open to challenges’ attitudes, are features of those who succeed.” Just like a handcrafted hat, leaves and snowflakes; no two Echo Factory students are the same. Each possesses unique
skills, talents and dreams that are nurtured and encouraged on a 1:1 basis. From initial enquiry through to graduation and beyond, Echo Factory respects every student’s individual journey to musical triumph. Nicholls added: “New students reflect remarkable diversity and range. Although from differing backgrounds and places, the commitment and collaborative zeal points to the same ends – savvy success.” Ready to get ahead in performance, production or music business? Becoming a parent is just about the biggest event in anyone’s lives, bringing with it a raft of challenges and unforeseen scenarios that potentially pose the sternest of tests. For Paloma Faith, the experience of being a new mum may have left her wondering where her next night’s sleep might ever be coming from, yet it’s brought a renewed sense of purpose and focus to her music writes Neill Barston. “I’m trying to juggle being a mother and a singer. I have no idea how I am managing, but I am somehow,” she laughs, recounting her whirlwind existence recording her fourth studio album. The 36-year old Londoner has already amassed an enviable career over the past decade that has seen her become the only female artist beyond Adele to have three double platinum recordings to her name. While it’s been a road requiring plenty of hard graft, her artfully soulful sound and quirky style have undoubtedly played their part in propelling the Hackney-born star to success. The singer’s latest offering, The Architect, follows boldly in its predecessors’ footsteps, showcasing her distinctive powerful vocals that have earned comparisons with everyone from 60’s icons such as Etta James and Billie Holiday, through to the late Amy Winehouse. As she admits, she’s hoping her latest work, partly recorded in America, might yet crack the elusive holy grail of top slot in the album charts. If the slick, yet lyrically reflective lead single Crybaby is anything to go by, then the signs are indeed looking promising. It seems the singer is enjoying a comparatively settled phase of her life living with French boyfriend Leyman Lahcine, and it’s apparent that starting a family has directly influenced her music. “I do feel my approach to music has changed since I’ve become a parent - which does have an impact. With difficult things that are happening in the world, you feel protective and want to make things comfortable for your family. “I think things are changing in our history and maybe not for the better, which is something I’m concerned about. I feel there’s a sense of duty to talk about events.” www.69-degrees.co.uk
24 Much like any other artist in the limelight, her rise has come with the perhaps inevitable burden of being followed around by the ever-hungry paparazzi. Everyone from Hello magazine through to the national red-top national papers has been waiting to secure pictures of her new youngster, whom she is keen to shield from un-necessary public attention. “I value my privacy more so than ever now, as it’s a real responsibility being a parent, and I want my child to know itself first rather than everyone else feeling that they know all about them.” Such determination to do things on her own terms has proved a consistent theme throughout her career, and something that has helped her stand out from the crowd. As she recalls of her childhood in East London, the half-Spanish artist says that she always had something of a creative streak. However, it was far from obvious that she was destined to become a singer, with her initial studies being at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. “Growing up in Hackney, I was surrounded by lots of different types of music - from my mum, I remember listening to plenty of revolutionary music from the 60’s such as Bob Dylan, while my dad was really into jazz, which is where my interest in all that comes from. “Later, when I was studying, I got into Rn’ B dancehall as well, and originally I wanted to be a dancer. Then I did my musical theatre, and I think that music just chose
www.69-degrees.co.uk
me,” she explains of her formative years. From her early CV that spanned everything from being a life model, cabaret dancer and bartender, to a gig as a magician’s assistant, her rich experiences have offered plenty of tales and adventures to fuel her inventive songwriting. As if to underline her determination, she famously walked out on a deal for a record contract when the agent watching her refused to stop texting on his phone. Needless to say, it was very much his loss, and the wider music industry’s gain, for Paloma then secured a major deal that set in motion her strikingly memorable debut album. To her credit, Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? blazed a trail into the top 10, and proceeded to lodge in the album charts for the next 100 weeks. But how does she look back on it now? “Well, that was nearly 10 years ago, and it was what it was. But I think it is great that I’ve managed to sustain a career as unfortunately not many people get to make more than one or two albums these days,” reflects the singer on what she feels is now an over-saturated market. By her own admission, trying to sustain a fanbase and avoiding the trap of merely recreating a formula for previous hits has offered plenty of challenges. While her towering vocal abilities have continued to garner contrasts with the late Amy Winehouse, it’s something Paloma is entirely at ease with. “I’m flattered by comparisons
to Amy. It’s not something I am offended by, though I am quite different. “When she met me once, she asked if I played an instrument, but I said no, and she said that was a shame as she would really have liked someone like me in her group. “I was a massive fan of hers, and after watching the documentary about her life, I actually wrote a song for her, Price of Fame, which is on the new album. Her death was such a tragedy,” adds the vocalist with a note of sadness. Her down-to-earth manner is a breath of fresh air in an industry
25
“Originally I wanted to be A dancer, Then I did my musical theatre, and I think that music just chose me,” awash with egos, and her willingness to give something back was seen with her time on The Voice series. Beyond being a vocal mentor, she was determined to help those under her wing with additional songwriting classes.
acknowledgement. I come from a long line of people that haven’t really been acknowledged for what they did. I think there are a lot of people out there doing important work, like doctors and nurses who don’t get that recognition they should.”
As for her own career, having been nominated several times for a Brit Award, persistence paid off two years ago as she claimed a long-awaited win in the best female solo artist category. Being in an industry that is often quick to cast judgment, she felt there was a real sense of vindication in claiming the coveted accolade.
With a major award to her name, there has been plenty of hype surrounding her latest release, bolstered by notable additions including an appearance from Samuel L Jackson and a duet with singer songwriter John Legend in the mix.
“It was amazing to win the Brit Award and to finally gain some
Besides the album, fans will have to wait a little longer for her next UK tour, which kicks off next March. It’s destined to feature
some of Paloma’s trademark selfdesigned sets to spark the tone for a hit-packed series of shows. “The only reason I do what I’m doing is because I love touring – as when I’m out there I am excited and feel that I’m in the right place,” adds the engaging singer, who may well have a little more to think about with a young child in tow, yet it won’t stop her from enjoying every single moment. Paloma will embark on a UK arena tour including the Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham on March 3rd and Genting Arena, Birmingham March 21st. BEARDED WONDER
SHORT OR LONG, BLACK, WHITE, RED, BROW N OR BLONDE, BEARDS ARE STILL THE GENTLEMAN’S ‘IT’ ACCESSORY FOR WINTER 2017 WRITES CLARE MAGUIRE.
People have long predicted the demise of the facial fashion but like any other trend, adaptations of the facial hair style keep growing. The popularity of beards has led to a huge growth in beard care products - I mean what self-respecting guy doesn’t have at least three different types of beard oil in his bathroom cabinet? And that’s just the home treatments, with over 100 Barbers now in Birmingham alone; many of them offering everything from beard massages to trimming, styling and sculpting, it’s safe to say that being bushy is bug business. Is the end nigh? Are we all bearded out? Well the experts seem to think so – beard trend expert and medical historian Alun Whitley, who studied the trend for three years, stated beards were on their way out thanks to a rise of ‘young, urban creatives’, who prefer a smoother face yet it’s exactly these guys that are sticking with their scruff. So what is about a bit of facial fur that is so appealing to all you guys? Flick on the TV and it’s beard central. From uber macho Game of Thrones medieval style manliness to celebs and sporting heroes everyone has a beard and, to be fair, look a hell of a lot hotter for it – well on the whole anyway – Simon Cowell and Graham Norton you ‘re pushing your luck a little. Even Royalty are sporting the scruff – a ginger beard used to be the opposite of style but wowsers now it’s sexy as!
Beards are so much of the norm now how do you keep it cool and stand out from the crowd? With Christmas round the corner you can always opt for a beard bauble or two or how about glamming up your groom with a spot of glitter? For those less experimental, it’s more about the grooming of the beard itself. Moisturise and trim – if it’s getting too long you’ll look more trampy than trendy so make sure you maintain- no matter what the length. Struggling to get more than wisp on that chinny chin chin? Although growing a beard is a biological process, for some men growing a beard can be problematic. Fear not though as a little bit of sculpted stubble goes a long way and it’s a good middle ground between beardy babe and hairless hero.

The REP’s New Season Reflects turbulent Times The REP's Artistic Director, Roxana Silbert, has announced her programme for spring and summer 2018. The exciting new season mirrors and examines the stormy age in which we live, across The REP's three stages. Roxana said: “This season we are reflecting the increasingly turbulent times we live in with stories that explore this extraordinary era – James Graham's This House is a searing look at British politics, Truth by Helen Chadwick and Steven Hoggett, looks at the once simple notion of truth in a messy modern age, The Kite Runner highlights a friendship on the verge of war, and Terrence Rattigan's masterpiece, The Winslow Boy offers a compelling investigation of the fallout on one family of a very different war in a very different time. “New times call for new ways of presenting stories and I am pleased to welcome back one of Europe's most exciting directors, Calixto Bieito, with an ambitious new work, The String Quartet's Guide To Sex and Anxiety, featuring live music from The Heath Quartet. “For this season I'm particularly thrilled to welcome back two playwrights who have been important figures in The REP's history: Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti's latest play, Elephant premières in February and playwright, David Edgar, marks his debut as a performer, with the auto-biographical, Trying It On.” Some of the highlights Season include:

N U : M U S I C OUR TEN ESSENTIAL ALBUMS OF 2017 SAMPHA – PROCESS The Mercury Award winning album is perhaps the standout longplayer of 2017. Following a hiatus full of collaborations with the likes of Jessie Ware, Drake and Solange, Sampha’s debut full length album is an emotion filled collection of electronic epics whilst No One Knows Me Like the Piano may very well take the prize for 2017’s most beautiful song. DRAKE – MORE LIFE Drake has dominated 2017 and for good reason; long player More Life delivered a mix tape style soundtrack of killer cuts including sound track of the summer Passionfruit and essential collaborations from Kanye West, Young Thug and the UK’s own Giggs and Jorja Smith. THE XX, I SEE YOU The ultimate make out album for millennials, The XX’s sparse soundscape has found its feet on their third long player with its mix of dancehall and nineties house inspired beats and guitar based alt pop rock. For us it’s the anthemic memoir of A Violent Noise that takes us back to that early morning, sweaty first kiss in a club- dreamlike, euphoric and utterly enchanting.
www.69-degrees.co.uk
GEORGE MICHAEL – LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE / MTV UNPLUGGED. We’d argue that Michael was one of the greatest singer songwriters of the last twenty years and the proof of that is contained in this remastered reissue. A sales smash and playlist for some of the greatest soulful songs that take on a deeper, more emotional meaning following his shock death on Christmas day 2016. Fast Love will never be the same again.
KATY PERRY WITNESS Ok so bear with us with this one. Witness may not be Perry’s finest despite the addictively delicious Chained to the Rhythm and Swish Swish, but it is the astounding shade fest surrounding this and Taylor Swift’s upcoming album has made us choose sides and we’re totally team Katy!
51 PERFUME GENIUS – NO SHAPE Art popster Mike Hadreas most accomplished album to date, No Shape explodes with emotion and beauty. Heavily layered soundscapes of echoing strings alongside his own vocal vibrato add an air of the gothic and an influence of Kate Bush to tracks such as Slip Away (If you haven’t watched the video yet it’s a complete treat).
LORDE - MELODRAMA It has to be said that we weren’t waiting with baited breath for Lorde’s sophomore album release despite the charm of Royals yet upon its release Melodrama shook us with its maturity. Lorde transcends her age with a lyrical sophistication and observational ability of someone way beyond their 20s. Elements of EDM, hip hop, pop and artists such as Bowie and Bush add substance and charm. Sober 2 is a case in point. HARRY STYLES - HARRY STYLES We’re not ones to buy into the hype yet the long awaited long player with this ex One Directioner really surprised us as he shook of his boyband shackles with a tribute album to the history of Britpop and rock. The influence of Bowie, The Stones, Blur, Oasis and Elton abound in a collection that makes us excited for what is to come.
DUA LIPA – DUA LIPA Perhaps one of 2017’s best breakthrough artists, Dua Lipa has added sass and synths to an album of pure pop perfection that’s cut with a huge chunk of credibility. Killer lines such as ‘If you’re still under him you ain’t getting over him’ prove that this is one song writer who’s gonna stick around.
LAURA MARLING – SEMPER FEMINA Less folky but distinctly feminine, Marling’s sixth album is an intimate journey into the melodic. From dystopian beats to classical strings, Semper Femina is an intelligent, writhing, sensual and beautifully produced album that is as absorbing as it is adventurous. www.69-degrees.co.uk

Nu Artists
o AshEr x and Charlie Georgi HQ Familia in Leicester are fast becoming one of the biggest driving forces behind new and upcoming talent in the city. Asher X and Charlie Georgio are the labels first two signed artists and both feature on the debut EP, HQF001. We caught up with them to find out what life is like since being signed to the label. So, tell us a little bit more about yourselves, how did you get into music and what inspired you to take it seriously? Charlie – I went to college to train as an actor for musical theatre, around the same time, my cousin Harri Georgio, started working as a producer here at HQ. We made a track together and it worked really well so from there, it’s been a natural progression to get to this point. Asher – I have always written a lot of poetry and I put a couple of my poems up on Facebook. A friend of mine saw it and put me in touch with Yasin here at HQ. We experimented by putting some of my poems to beats and we all really liked how it turned out. Who would you say are your biggest musical influences? Charlie - I started listening to stuff such as Tyler the Creator, Future, all that weird cool alternative rap. Asher - I like all different kinds of music, one of my favourite artists is Bjork. I love everything about her. I also love The Streets. You feature on the HQF001 EP, how do you feel about being a part of Leicester’s hottest new label? Charlie - Really good, to be honest, I never thought my music would be taken that seriously. Yasin really liked my first track and featured it on the EP, which was great. Asher - It’s brilliant. It’s just so nice to see your name www.69-degrees.co.uk
on a CD, especially along with the other brilliant artists that are on that EP. What have you both learned from the guys here at HQ Familia and how have they helped you? Charlie - They’ve helped a lot, they have helped me believe in myself more. Asher – Confidence wise, I have improved loads. They saw something in me and now I’m starting to see it in myself! Who would be your dream collaboration? Charlie – My dream collab would be with Chance the Rapper. Asher - Mike Skinner would be my obvious choice. I’ve even been described as a female version of him, which is a huge compliment. HQ Familia is based in Leicester, what do you like most about the city? Charlie – I think Leicester is buzzing and really cool. I’m from Brum and whenever I’m here I always get a good vibe. Asher - Leicester is on the rise and it feels like there is a really good energy in the city in comparison to how it used to be when I was younger. What has 2018 got in store for you? Toronto “The most multiculturally diverse city on the planet”, claims Lonely Planet.
LUSTING OVER LONG-HAUL Toronto is a dynamic and buzzing city, full of unexpected sights and fascinating experiences. The skyline is populated by skyscrapers and the neighbourhoods by people from all over the world, undoubtedly adding to the character of this very special city. Famous for the CN Tower and its 360° views, but home to so much more than the typical tourist traps. Trinity Bellwoods Park is in the west end of Toronto and is the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic, especially in the latter spring months when the cherry blossoms are in bloom - the perfect backdrop for an Instagram selfie. ‘Nadege’, a patisserie just along from the park, is not to be missed. Set up by a French pastry chef and selling what are known as the best macaroons in the city, make sure it is at the top of your ‘to-do’ list. Not far north of the park lays Toronto’s Annex district, a bohemian neighbourhood full of independent businesses and www.69-degrees.co.uk
entertainment venues. Spend your evenings here, either at Lee’s Palace, the area’s concert venue; or Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, a century old movie house specialising in quirky documentaries. Ossington Avenue is an area that has been transformed in recent years and is now a must visit for any foodies taking a trip to Toronto. We recommend grabbing a sandwich from ‘Schmaltz Appetizing’, a Jewish deli in the neighbourhood. The ‘Chubchub’ is the deli’s signature, a bagel piled high with fishy goodness: it’s a handful of pure deliciousness. To discover more than just the city, jump on a ferry to Toronto Island and explore the eclectic markets. Kensington Market has all the cuisine options you could imagine; including a vegan and gluten-free bakery, a mouthwatering burger joint, and a big fat burrito bar; all squeezed into mural-covered streets alongside an array of vintage shops. It really
is hipster paradise. If you’re visiting in the summer months, ‘Pedestrian Sundays’ are designed to celebrate and showcase the neighbourhood. Think street food vendors, samba music, giant board games and a whole lot of fun. Just 80 miles from Toronto is Niagara Falls. If you’re going to travel all the way to Canada, it’s worth dedicating at least a day to discovering the Niagara region. If you’re not confident driving, there are pre-organised tours available from Toronto in which you see the sights of Niagara Falls as well as the beautiful town of Niagaraon-the-Lake. You might even like to throw in a ‘Hornblower’ boat ride or a visit to the observation deck of the Skylon Tower, offering views from 775 feet above the falls.
55 Boston “The epitome of cool”, exclaimed by many, many people.
Boston is a city rife with
history, architecture and red brick buildings. Often referred to as America’s oldest city, Boston has a unique charm not appreciated until you’ve actually visited. As well as sampling the obligatory lobster rolls and chowder, there are so many secret parts of the city you must discover when you visit. The Freedom Trail is arguably the most iconic way to spend a day in Boston. Encompassing sixteen of the city’s most historically significant sites, if there’s one thing you do whilst you’re in Boston, make sure it is this. Get yourself on a guided walking tour or download the app and follow the two and a half mile path through the city. Learn more about the American Revolution and Boston in the eighteenth century; and visit sites including Massachusetts State House and Faneuil Hall. It shouldn’t take you longer than half a day to complete. The first stop on the Freedom Trail is Boston Common, the oldest
public park in America and an ideal location for a spot of people watching. If you’re visiting in the summer, there’s an outdoor theatre, a carousel, tennis courts and a splash pool. If you’re visiting in the winter there’s an ice skating rink on Frog Pond, gentle slopes for sledging and special New Year’s Eve celebrations involving fireworks and ice sculptures. Whilst you’re in the neighbourhood, you’d be foolish not to check out Beacon Hill. Boston’s most prestigious postcode, the area is just how you’d imagined Boston to be, with cobbled narrow streets and red brick houses. A great place for food and shopping, we recommend ‘Figs’, a snug pizza joint perfect for either a lunchtime bite or an evening meal. The best late evening jaunt is ‘The Beacon Hill Pub’, located at the end of Charles Street and one of Beacon Hill’s worst kept secrets. A dive bar with a loud jukebox and friendly staff, what more could you want?
to the attraction’s website, on a clear day you can see for up to 100 miles and sights including the Hancock Tower, the Esplanade and Harvard University. Get a ticket which allows you to visit during the day and then return at night after dark to get the best value for money. If anyone in your party is in to sport, Fenway Park is a must. Home to the Boston Red Sox since 1912, this baseball park is located in the city of Boston. If you’re not lucky enough to catch a game, there are one hour walking tours available in which you can see inside the press box and the view from behind the Green Monster.
Getting there With Primera Air launching direct flights to New York, Boston and Toronto from Birmingham Airport in May next year, book your seat now to avoid disappointment. One way fares start from just £149 per person, including taxes.
Arguably the best view of Boston is from the Skywalk Observatory, which offers a bird’s eye perspective of the city. According www.69-degrees.co.uk

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
TO US
This autumn, yours truly finally came of age as we hit our 18th birthday and celebrated in style at Leicester’s newest go to champagne and wine bar; 45 St Martin’s . Invited guests from all stages of the magazine’s history gathered to celebrate over fizz, cocktails and canapes before SIXTY9 founder Kevin and Jonathan Fraser Urquhart cut what must have been the world’s most amazing chocolate cake. What started off as a drunken conversation in a questionable bar in Leicester quickly became a publising reality, albeit rough round the edges. We like to think it had charm and personality from the off. It also suited a purpose: connecting readers to the very best of the Midlands in terms of fashion, clubbing, socialising, arts and all things in between. What srated off as a bit of a fanzine is now three magazines, a PR and Event company and an online marketing machine that reaches over 850,000 readers a month. As part of the celebrations, we launched a series of competitons over the magazine’s massive online and social media presence offering readers the chance to win 18 days of prizes from 18 of the Midlands’ hottest brands, worth over £2000. Were you a lucky winnner? Find out online at 69-degrees.co.uk or Facebook: Sixty9Magazine, Twitter: @69mag and Insta: @Sixty9Magazine images by Steve Smith
If not, maybe you should consider it. It’s fast becoming one of the favourite destination spots in Leicester’s city centre. Since new ownership took over early in 2017, the venue itself has gone from strength to strength with several sell out shows taking place. And a stunning cocktail menu is also a firm new favourite of the local drinking scene. Nestled in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter, the main thing that most of those that go into the venue notice is the atmosphere and character that now exudes from every inch of the venues’ two bars, no matter what time of day it is or what day of the week it is. According to the new locals, there’s more on offer here than in a few other place in the centre - like gaming on a 15ft LED screen, hammocks, extra comfortable chairs, home made candles and of course the wide range of live music on offer most nights of the week.” www.getintheshed.co.uk

FAN FAVOURITE GETS‘FURBED
Established in the mid 80’s The Fan Club in Leicester has been creating an electric atmosphere for clubbers ever since. Recently, the night club has had a bit of a revamp and now has a room dedicated to Indie fans; The Roses Room. The revamp doesn’t end there, they have also fitted new club lighting throughout. For those who want to sit back and enjoy the vibes, the newly refurbished leather booths are perfect to make things a little more intimate. As well as opening up the dance floor in the main room, it now has a more industrial feel with the use of metal and wood and have improved all three bars so we can all get our drinks a little quicker.
