O rc h e st r a l Manoeuvres IN Garage With the orchestral phenomenon sweeping the UK and bringing sold-out arenas for collaborations with the Hacienda, Lush, Miss Moneypenny’s, Colours and Pete Tong, next up for the classical treatment and taking advantage of the recent resurgence in interest with tracks from the likes of Jorja Smith and Preditah - is the UK garage scene. The tour, calling in at Birmingham’s Institute 2 on the 23rd November, will see the special House and Garage Orchestra perform with a string of guest vocalists including iconic old school artists behind the songs. We caught up with MC Neat, Kele Le Roc and Leanne Brown to find out more...

Leanne is thrilled to be part of the tour and to see the music she loves reaching a new audience. She said: “I am so privileged to be alive and still active in the music scene for the arrival of the House and Garage crossover to orchestral, from being electronic based. “This new phenomenon will keep the scene alive for people who still love those tunes from back in the day. It’s amazing how many people are so excited about it; It has brought back a strong community of ravers and artists to enjoy the scene again. This time however, we are joined by a team of superb musicians. I’m looking forward to making new memories. “I love underground music, my personal preference for tunes when

I’m listening in the club or in the car is underground and raw, however my musical career began with me playing classical music as part of a Steel Orchestra for years, so merging the two together in order to create something credible is like a dream come true for me. I feel so utterly excited about performing backed by the orchestra, as my mind is always whirring with song arrangements, so it will itch a big scratch for me. Shy Cookie and Ish have worked insanely hard to get this thing on the road; that level of graft has to pay off. This is a great concept with and great team. I think that the guys here have helped to set in motion a new and exciting era of live club music.”

www.69-degrees.co.ukk

21

22

MC Neat is also confident the Orchestra will be a huge success so was happy to take time out from writing, recording and performing in his own right to be part of it. “The clash between the styles is exactly what music is about: experimenting. It was simply a matter of time. We were a part of a scene that went huge, at the time you kinda don’t even notice, it’s when you look back years later you realise. “It’s an honour performing Little Bit Of Luck with

the orchestra, the audience are always up for a good old sing along!”

back to the old school. Before we had technology we played music live and organically.

Kele Le Roc is sure to go down a storm at the shows with that powerhouse voice and, like MC Neat, feels the garage and orchestral crossover was always going to happen because there’s a hidden affinity.

Kele started out as a teenager and is still performing, writing and so much more. “I think when you are so focused on what you want to achieve and I knew from a young age that I wanted to sing and perform. I just had tunnel vision. As my success grew, for me it was all destiny. Like ‘yes this is how my life is meant to be, this is what I envisaged’. So I really just took it all in my stride.

“To be honest it was only a matter of time as a lot of garage does lend itself musically to classical riffs. Not to mention it’s taking it

holiday they had in Napa or Ibiza. “That said, I feel nothing but gratitude for the track and everyone who made it. It feels like family. I’ve heard it A LOT though lol.” Leanne is still working hard within the industry and in fact within the scene, so it’s clear it hasn’t gone away as many thought - it’s simply returned to its underground roots waiting for its next moment in the spotlight. Which is now, thanks to the Orchestra. Leanne revealed: “I can honestly say I have never been so busy doing shows and performances as I am now - and have been for the past four years. “I can imagine the same is the case for a lot of the other Old Skool artists. This is predominantly at UKG based events - the scene has had a resurgence amongst the young generation especially - they seem to love it just as much as we all did 20 plus years ago.

“I’m working most weekends sometimes three or four gigs a weekend. With any scene that comes to the forefront it resides back to the underground but we’re still all here bubbling. I’m just wrapping up a new album, so that’s been time consuming, it’s a full live album ironically but more soul. One of the biggest moments of the show comes when Leanne blows the roof off with her band’s megahit Flowers. While many artists come to resent their biggest hits, she will forever

be thankful for what the song did for her - but she does admit she wishes people would be more open to her new songs too. “I will forever have a huge amount of love for the song Flowers and everyone involved in making it - it has brought about opportunities that would not have occurred otherwise. I have loads of other material that has legs however but Flowers seems to be very dominant still whenever I pitch new material, as it reminds people of that wicked

I like to keep my shows as fresh possible so my hubby Andy and I work together to create re-works and merge them with original material whenever possible. I’ve also been making some Trap music with some producers from that scene. I have become cool to my kids now lol.” With a new generation of DJs, promoters and producers building on the sound their parents raved to, this isn’t all about nostalgia, it’s about celebrating a genre that’s gone from guilty pleasure to feel good funk and bassline behomoth with a fast growing following that’s about to blow it mainstream. This is where moisturising and protecting products come in to their own, and there are plenty of good ones in the Umberto Giannini range for all hair types. The new Grow Long Hair Mask has it all, intense moisturising creams with UG’s unique Coffee-Gro Complex.

HEALTHY HAIR Winter is on us and it can be almost as damaging for your hair as the summer months. Protection is key! Damp British cold weather can take its toll on your tresses and there are a few essential things that can be done to combat this tough season. Your hair and skin can get as dehydrated in the winter as the summer so it’s essential to drink plenty of water and use products that will add moisture to both scalp and hair to replace what the extremes of our climate can throw at us. Scalp care is one of the most overlooked things in your top to toe beauty regime, however it’s where your hair comes from so it really does pay to look after it. The correct balance of nutrients and PH Levels are so important for healthy hair growth and is so easy to achieve, just build it into your routine before bed and within months you will see the transformation to thicker, fuller, more enriched hair. Think about visiting the salon more regularly to trim the ends of your hair, making sure that split ends are dusted off before given a chance to creep up the hair lengths and put your dreams of long luscious hair further out of reach. Long hair is still a key trend and hair as healthy looking at the ends as the roots is the goal.

As ever protection from heat and humidity is essential and always try to avoid unnecessary heat styling. Think about styling your hair differently the day after a wash rather than wash and style again. Ask your hairdresser to show you some second day styles that you can master and you instantly halve the damage caused by styling. Using slightly cooler water should be enough to smooth the cuticle out. When you do style, make sure you always include styling products with a heat protective barrier in your regime. If keeping hair smooth and frizz free is a big issue, a semi-permanent blow dry could be the revelation you have been looking for. Book in for this hour long treatment that seals the hair cuticle with keratin (naturally found in hair which when depleted results in a dry, damaged appearance) and allows you to wash and go with minimal heat styling for up to 3 months. It’s the beauty secret of every perfectly presented power woman! So how should you be wearing your hair this party season? Shorter haircuts are still few and far between. Loose tousled hair without the hairspray and with plenty of texture will be everywhere this winter season. Curls are big, with relaxed shapes and a light use of products for a soft touchable texture. If you have waves but want curls, try this simple old fashioned styling tip - smooth Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly through clean damp hair and twist each lock until it curls back on itself and secure with a hair grip. Do this all over and in the morning tease out the curls with your fingers. We look forward to welcoming you at the salon and remember consultations are free as we love to talk hair so if you are considering a style or colour upgrade then book a consultation today. Umberto Giannini products are available at all Umberto Giannini salons, www.umbertogiannini.com, www.boots.com and Boots stores nationwide. www.69-degrees.co.uk

From sharp tailored overcoats to the classic parka, guys we’ve got you covered. A new winter coat will probably be your biggest investment piece this season so choosing the right one is crucial. Whether you want to focus on the functional or the stylish, the menswear team at HARVEY NICHOLS BIRMINGHAM reveal their winter musthaves.

THE GREAT COVER-UP 1

2

3

THE PARKA When it comes to the best winter coats for men, some might say that the parka is the quintessential jacket of the season – and can also be one of the warmest winter options. The key characteristics of the parka – including long-line length, fish tail and relaxed fit – are why it reign supreme as one of the most popular styles. With a wear-anywhere appeal that goes beyond trend or season, it’s an off-duty staple, either with denim and a waffle-knit jumper or on top of a sports-luxe hooded sweatshirt. 5

THE OVERCOAT: The all-occasion overcoat will smarten up pretty much any outfit; either single or double-breasted, they’re usually made from wool, and traditionally have a single vent at the back and a wider collar that lends itself to being popped up against the cold and styled with a chunky knit scarf. Wear it through the week with your city suit or team with a jumper, jeans and suede boots for weekend chic. 7

1: 78 Stitches 3.15 army green cotton parka, £750. 2: Alpha Industries fishtail parka, £315. 3: Canada Goose PBI Expedition fur-trimmed parka, £1025. 4: Acne Studios wool and cashmere-blend coat, £850. 5: J Lindeberg camel wool-blend coat, £500. 6: NN07 Lamont camel wool-blend coat, £449. 7: 9: Kenzo faux shearling and shell jacket, £455. 8: Alpha Industries Injector III appliquéd shell bomber jacket, £240. 9: Belstaff Arne shearling-trimmed leather jacket, £1295. www.69-degrees.co.uk

THE SHEARLING JACKET: Made famous by the bomber styles worn by US pilots in the 1940s, and then 50s screen idols Marlon Brando and James Dean, the shearling jacket has long been a firm fashion favourite. Perfect to keep you very warm on the coldest winter days, it’s a shape that still dominates the menswear catwalks. Look out for classic bomber shapes, removable trims, or even fully exposed lining ... it seems designers are constantly reinventing and upgrading the style.

Murder for Two

26th – 28th November @ Theatre Royal Nottingham

Through debate, protest and radical endeavours, women fought for their right to voice their opinions in a public realm that systematically silenced women. Women Power Protest includes bold contemporary artworks from over 55 artists and looks at the experiences of becoming and progressing as a woman amongst varying degrees of opportunity and oppression in relation to race, class, geography and sexuality. Including notable names such as Lucy Gunning, Margaret Harrison, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Sonia Boyce, Susan Hiller, Lubaina Himid, Marion Coutts, Mona Hatoum and Mary Kelly, the exhibition will draw attention to the progress made since the first women were given the right to vote 100 years ago, and the immense challenges women still face today. Iconic work included within the show include the Post-Partum Document series by Mary Kelly (1978/79) where 18 slate tablets, resembling miniature Rosetta stones, are the part of a six-year exploration of motherhood and Kelly’s relationship with her son as well as 2017 Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid – Cotton.com (2002) which uses pattern to explore the conversations that may have taken place at the time of the Cotton Famine between workers in Lancashire’s cotton mills who defended the lives of African slaves in America. and so is Jimmy so I’m sure they’ll look after me. The reputation of the Hippodrome pantomime is second to none, can we expect some big song and dance numbers. Oh yes, huge! Dancing with that mermaid’s tail will be interesting! We’ll see how it works out with the tail, I’m sure they’ve thought of something clever, I don’t what it is, but I’m sure they have.

MAGICAL MEERA West Midlands-born comedian, writer and actress Meera Syal needs little introduction. Comedian, actress and an award-winning author we caught up with Meera as she prepares to return to the West Midlands to make her pantomime debut as the Magical Mermaid in the Birmingham Hippodrome’s production of Peter Pan. So, back to the West Midlands for Christmas then? Yeah, a Brummy Christmas! I’m really looking forward to it! So, you’re playing the part of the Magical Mermaid. What can you tell us about her?Well, she’s basically the Good Fairy but because of course as this is Peter Pan, she’s a mermaid which I’m www.69-degrees.co.uk

thrilled about because I’ve always had a thing for mermaids and I get to wear a rather lovely, shiny tail, not great for dancing, very bad for going to the toilet but I’m sure we’ll work that out. She basically helps Peter out of a few fixes with his arch enemy Captain Hook. She’s a good egg, although she has got a terrible memory because she’s half fish! She is generally there to sprinkle a bit of magic and help Peter defeat the villain. Is this the first pantomime you’ve done? This is my absolute first and I’ve been asked before, but it was never the right time so yeah, I’m a panto virgin! Matt Slack is obviously, you know, brilliant and incredibly well loved for his work at the Hippodrome

What is it about Peter that has made it last so long because it’s quite a sinister tale isn’t it really? Creeping into bedrooms and taking away young children to fantasy lands? You’re right actually! Do you know what, I think if you analyse fairy tales too much, it all looks a bit sinister doesn’t it. The best fairy tales are quite dark, there’s danger in them and kids like that and if they know there’s resolution and justice at the end, you can get away with it. Peter Pan is one of the great childhood stories; that whole idea of not wanting to grow up, I think we’ve all been there, then realising you must, sadly. Do you feel like a grown up? Most of the time no, I think I’m still somewhere stuck around fourteen in my head, I get a shock when I look in a mirror. It’s like “who’s the old bird? oh it’s me!” I think that’s sort of what Peter Pan’s about; we all have to grow old but if you can hang on to your inner child that’s actually a good thing. Just let it out at the panto; you can go back to that joy of being a kid again. I think that’s the point of panto- it’s joy, that’s what we’re there to do. Pure joy. Peter Pan runs from Wed 19 Dec 2018 - Sun 27 Jan 2019 For tickets, call 0844 338 5000 or visit www. birminghamhippodrome.com

7th December @ Motorpoint Arena Nottingham Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds – Alive on Stage returns to UK arenas to celebrate its 40th ANNIVERSARY

As The REP concludes its autumn 2018 season with a bold new version of the enduring classic, The Wizard Of Oz (24 November – 13 January) they announce a spectacular spring season of theatre. The REP’s Artistic Director ,Roxana Silbert said:“Revolution is something Birmingham was founded upon and, over the years, it has become more diverse, adaptable and robust as a result. The city is currently experiencing a significant and exciting renaissance and has a gritty determination to improve the living and working environment for future generations. I wanted this season to reflect that determined spirit; bold, varied and new but with a sense of continuity.

Across its three stages, The REP presents stories from far-flung cultures such as The Half God Of Rainfall, a contemporary saga that weaves poetry with storytelling and From Shore To Shore which takes place at Chung Ying Cantonese and Birmingham’s Chinese Community Centre and tells the stories of migrant Chinese communities living in the UK. Stories borne out of the hopelessness of war, such as the UK première of Khaled Hosseini’s international best-selling novel A Thousand Splendid Suns and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, an unforgettable love story, set against the backdrop of World War II. Plus bold theatrical responses to injustice with Good Dog, Nanjing, inspired by the Massacre of 1937 and Concubine which returns to The REP after a sell-out run at the theatre. We also explore our instinct to fight passionately for what we believe in with UK Premiere Edmond De Bergerac, winner of five Molière Awards and featuring actor, Freddie Fox in this incredible story behind Cyrano de Bergerac and the Olivier Awardwinning Rotterdam, bittersweet comedy about gender and sexuality. Roxana continues ‘ There is such an abundance of quality and variety in the programme -so, I’d really like people to challenge themselves to try something new!’ Book Online: birmingham-rep.co.uk Box Office: 0121 236 4455

PLAY: NINTENDO SWITCH - LET’S GO PIKACHU!

SS

At the age of nine, Romesh Ranganathan delivered his first ever stand-up set at a Pontin’s holiday camp talent competition, smashing the other competitor, a young girl playing the kazoo. The gig went so well that Romesh retired his comic genius for twenty-two years, hiding behind the guise of a maths teacher, before finally revealing himself again (no, not like that) at the tender age of 31. Now, for the first time, he tells the full story of how he got here. From the delights of Sri Lankan hospitality to his struggles as a child, teacher and now parent, to his adolescent flirtation with a rap career and his attempts to make it in comedy.

Our heart will always belong to Pikachu so the release of Nintendo’s Switch Let's Go Pikachu Limited Edition Console with Joycon, Pre-Installed Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu + Pokeball Plus Controller is top of our Christmas list. LISTEN: Mumford & Sons, Delta Perhaps the ultimate festival band, Mumford & Sons’ fourth album is full of the folk rock inspired big hitters that we’ve all come to expect. First single, Guiding Light, builds until it explodes to anthemic heights although lead singer Marcus Mumford told Annie Mac to expect a more tender listen, [that is] introspective and reflective” whilst still marrying with “ecstatic stadium-sized dynamics.” Well soon get to see how that translates as there’s a 60 date world tour starting too!

RETURN OF THE MAC In a fit of festive escapism, Curve theatre is turning up the nostalgia dials to over-load this Christmas, reuniting old acquaintances and welcoming some new ones in from the cold with its production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Top of the tree is ex Hollyoaks heart throb and Strictly Come Dancing dish Danny Mac. We caught up with him to find out if he’s really Dreaming of a White Christmas. You’re becoming a bit of a local now; this is your third production with Curve isn’t it? I know it’s been years. It’s mad because there were a few options on the table and I’m in such a fortunate position that things do crop up, but this show was one of those things hovering about, and the thing is with Curve is that it’s such a fantastic theatre and I’ve never had anything but an excellent time there. And I don’t just mean in terms of fun and stuff, it’s just the quality of work that they produce and the nature of that building, everyone is just lovely including the audiences that come. If it had been a recast of White Christmas from last year then I probably would’ve said no straight away but after the work, I’d done on Sunset Boulevard with Nikolai Foster (Artistic Director at Curve) the opportunity to work with him again on an all new production of a classic show was unmissable. So, tell me about White Christmas. You’re playing Bob Wallace in the show and that means you’ve got the really big, Bing Crosby number. Yeah pressure! The good thing is I get that pretty much out the way right at the beginning and then it kind of comes back in as a big number right at the end so there’s not like any huge build up to it. They come, and they get what they want straight away. Have you started practising with your cardigan and your pipe? Lol not yet. I daren’t ever try and make too many bold decisions before I meet Nikolai because, he may want to do something completely different but I’m just starting to really dig into the script now and do some ground work. The script is beautiful, but I’ve never seen a production of it and I’m really trying to avoid the movie until I speak to Nikolai, he may want us to have a feel of it so that we have a feel of what people are expecting but at the same time I will have to make my own decisions first and then I’ll watch it afterwards. You’re going to be in Leicester for all of the festive period, are you planning on racing home Christmas Eve straight after the matinee? I will be. I will be racing straight back down to the South Coast. I’ve got three siblings and all of us and our partners are spending it together this year- this is the year when we all come together as a family. So a White Christmas is the last thing you want really! Yes, of course, Oh I never even gave that a thought! I’ll find a way I’m sure. Can’t miss Christmas! For mains we loved the Overnight Pork Belly, Crackling, Roasted Cauliflower and Piquant Sauce and the Pint Shop Dirty Burger with Bacon Jam, Burger Sauce and Smoked Cheese, was as dirty as it sounds. Moving on to the CoalBaked Flatbreads we absolutely loved the Tandoori masala Chicken with Toasted Almonds, just the right hint of spice and the almonds add great texture and taste. NGS Caddyshackers BRI er crazy TO Leicest

Leicester’s first crazy golf bar, Caddyshackers, has opened it’s doors as a brilliant alternative to a night down the pub, quirky work night out or just somewhere to kick start your weekend. Loacted on Calais Hill, just up the side of the Barley Mow pub on Granby Street, there’s an 18 hole crazy golf course themed around everything from an abandoned office, a bathroom, a brewery; there’s even a hole that goes through an abandoned Beetle car! Of course, being in Leicester, there’s also a tribute to the city’s beloved football club, as well as a few other foxes to try and avoid as you work your way around the course.

The venue is 18+ and is open daily from 3pm – midnight during the weekend and midday – midnight at weekends. If you fancy a bite after your round of golf, Frank’s Fine Pizza is based inside the venue with a fantastic selection of wood-fired pizzas, hot dogs, nachos and cheesecake. The bar is open to everyone whether you’re playing golf or not, so head down to sample their range of cocktails or craft beers. Priced at just a tenner for 18 holes with mid week offers available for students, book your game at www.caddyshackers.co.uk.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS Inspired by 80’s pop culture, Nocturnal Animals have opened their doors on Birmingham’s Bennetts Hill with the aim to provide a culinary journey with ingenious drinks, bold flavours and an afternoon tea unlike anything ever seen before. Downstairs there’s a 42-cover fine dining restaurant, with charcoal grill and influences from both modern Japanese and Chinese cooking. There’s also an ambitious and accessible taster menu for both lunch and dinner – as well as an à la carte bar menu across all floors. Upstairs, the décor is bold and adventurous, whilst two-time world class finalist James Bowker has developed a revolutionary cocktail menu inspired by colour and flavour. A theatrical and thoroughly modern Afternoon Tea overseen by MasterChef: The professional’s finalist Brett Connor will be served with a selection of sweet and savoury dishes in a tasting menu format, with additional options for champagne and cocktails. Nocturnal Animals is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 12pm to 11pm.
