HARVEY NICHOLS REDEFINE RETAIL Luxury retailer Harvey Nichols has opened the first of its new design concept stores at Birmingham’s Mailbox, the blueprint for all future Harvey Nichols stores. The new store is double the size of its predecessor and has been designed as a stage to display the very best fashion and lifestyle accessories in an environment that is beautiful, experimental, and creative and where style and technology work together seamlessly. Visitors walk through an immersive 12 metre long “tunnel” of L.E.D lights before being greeted by the Harvey Nichols Concierge team who are on hand to offer traditional services like coat check and valet parking. The Concierge area also offers one of our favourite parts of the new store: a ‘state of the art’ digital 360 mirror with time delay so you can record your own twirl and give yourself a full 360° view - you can even share the view on twitter with friends in case you need a second opinion on your new outfit. The store is set across 45,000 square feet, organised as an ‘all in one floor’ retail layout combining women’s and men’s fashion, beauty and hospitality on the ground level and a mezzanine for the beauty treatment rooms. The central space is dedicated to Beauty with Womenswear, Menswear as well as the Accessories and Shoes departments located around the stores perimeter whilst the stylish new restaurant, with menu overseen by Michelin starred Chef Glynn Purnell and glamorous cocktail bar are a welcome addition to destination dining in the city. Harvey Nichols is at The Mailbox, Birmingham, B1 1RE Tel. 0121 616 6000 www.69-degrees.co.uk

JUKEBOX

SPECIAL FEATURE

Leicester might not be short of music venues but it’s not exactly brimming with them either, so anytime something new pops up, it’s always warmly welcomed. Jukebox bar is the latest addition to the family; a new music venue that has quite literally boogied its way onto Leicester’s nightlife scene. Taking the place of the former Rockafellas bar, the venue in St Nicholas Place is under new ownership and having undergone a complete transformation, is now home to the sounds of soul, funk and RnB music. In what seemed the only appropriate thing to do, Jukebox opened its doors for the first time on American Independence Day – what better day to celebrate a place that brings together the best of jazz and soul, both of which originated in America? The July 4th opening saw RnB star and MOBO award winner, Lemar, join the night’s celebrations as a special guest and entertained the crowds with his own DJ set. However, despite the opening night success and the bar’s staggering reception from nightlife goers in Leicester, owner Shane Whitfield instead credits the immense popularity of the venue to the unique atmosphere the club and music creates – there’s simply nothing quite like it in the city. Even as Leicester’s music scene continues to grow, Jukebox is and remains one of a kind. With a capacity of 350, luxury VIP booths fully available to be booked by guests and a menu of delicious cocktails and champagne, Jukebox infuses great sounds in an ambient setting every weekend for citygoers. Better yet, as the bar has a night license in

www.69-degrees.co.uk

place, it’s open until 3am so you’ve got plenty of time to stay out socialising and enjoying the good vibes with your friends! With live music every Friday night and DJs playing mixes of the biggest hits on Saturday nights, weekends in Leicester have been fully revamped. ‘Everyone loves the ‘70s and ‘80s, even if you weren’t there the first time around!’ says Shane. He’s not wrong either, ‘the music from these decades is renowned for its feel good factor and timeless quality,’ he continues. Shane’s vision was to bring those nostalgic 70s vibes right up to date, with the helping hand of a modern venue and some of the best acts in the business. He hasn’t done a bad job with making that vision a reality either! In addition to Lemar, Jukebox has since hosted The Real Thing, Heatwave and a Bruno Mars tribute as live acts. The good vibes don’t stop there either. Shane explains there are still plenty more big names about to grace the venue, with ‘Trevor Nelson and Alexander O’Neal confirmed over the coming months,’ alongside the likes of Colin Francis, Gwen Dickey, Violet Cities and Detroit Soul. For more details about the upcoming events at the club, visit www.jukeboxleicester.co.uk and keep up to date with the latest announcements and offers by following Jukebox on social media (Facebook: jukeboxleics and Twitter: @ jukeboxleics)

CELEBRITY MEDISPA HEA RESORTS WORLD THIS

Leading celebrity hangout EF MEDISPA has announced a new location, confirming that it will launch a state-of-the-art spa, SANTAI BY EFMEDISPA, at Resorts World Birmingham. The award-winning chain of aesthetic clinics, created by world renowned expert, Esther Fieldgrass, is a favourite with the world’s elite and will now offer its services beyond London, where it currently operates in Chelsea, Kensington and St John’s Wood. SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA is the culmination of almost four decades of industry experience by Esther, and launched in 2006 as one of the UK’s first medi-spas: a one-stop location providing intelligent skincare, face and body treatments – all undertaken by highly qualified practitioners. It is, in Esther’s words; “Inner wellbeing and outer beauty. A unique one stop medispa, combining aesthetic treatments with the latest medical advances and traditional complementary therapies. It's Personal. It's Smart. It's Intelligent Skincare with Holistic Health”. The EF MEDISPA concept has been – and continues to be – recognised as one of the leading clinics in the UK, winning numerous professional and consumer awards including the prestigious Aesthetic Industry Best Clinic Chain and Professional Beauty’s Best www.69-degrees.co.uk

Medi-spa/Aesthetic Clinic for the second year running. That it is coming to the West Midlands is very big news indeed… SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA will be located within the £150m Resorts World Birmingham, offering a luxurious haven for visitors to Resorts World Birmingham and those staying at the Genting Hotel, or people who just want to visit us for the day to experience the very best and most effective treatments. They will offer a host of spa experiences and beauty treatments for both men and women; including facials, massages, cellulite treatment, body wraps, manicures, pedicures, hair removal, and eye lash tinting and shaping. In addition, SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA will also offer a ‘results driven’ high-end medical treatment menu, which includes acne scarring, rosacea, pigmentation, skin peels, anti-wrinkle injections, and more. Esther Fieldgrass, Founder of EF MEDISPA, commented: “I’m thrilled to be working with Genting UK to develop SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA at Resorts World Birmingham. We are providing a turnkey package that integrates our unique medi-spa concept into a traditional spa environment. We have seen an evolving trend as regular visitors to spas are now seeking more results-driven therapies. I believe we have designed the ideal blend of treatments to suit the diverse range of visitors to this amazing venue.”

ADING TO AUTUMN

FIVE FAVOURITES YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA offers a wide range of treatments for both men and women. Here are five of our favourites that you need to know about: GOT A PROBLEM WITH STRETCH MARKS? Stretch marks occur when your skin is stretched, causing the breakdown of collagen. Carboxy Therapy uses C02, which is present in our bodies at all times, to increase blood flow to the affected areas, resulting in a rush of oxygen and nutrients. FEELING FAT?

Open to everyone, the spa will include five medi-spa treatment rooms and four traditional treatment rooms. It will also feature a gym, swimming pool, mani/pedi area, and juice bar.

Vaser 4D Liposuction is a technique that can create body contour and definition such as a defined six pack. Vaser 4D can define and sculpt those particular areas of the body that men often seek to perfect. It can redefine your whole upper torso, adding muscle definition and giving you a natural, athletic and toned appearance. Profound effects on the sixpack, abdominals, chest, arms, back and any other area you wish to improve

FEEL BETTER FROM THE INSIDE OUT: The world of vitamin supplements can be incredibly confusing! You know you should be doing something to improve your skin, hair, and nails and boost your energy levels! At SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA’s Drip and Chill™ bar, you will receive a vitamin prescription tailormade to your body’s individual needs, but rather than taking orally, this is infused straight into your blood. It will leave you feeling amazing. NO SWEAT:

If you feel you suffer from excessive sweating, their Hyperhidrosis treatment could see you solve your problem, which many of us suffer from, but never admit. It’s an incredibly simple, 30 minute procedure that involves a few small injections into your underarm skin, and you can go back to your daily routine immediately. You should start to see results after just a few weeks, as the injectable treatment settles into your skin, and you’ll only need a treatment once or twice a year to stop the problem returning.

NEED TO DETOX? The Detox Diet is the effective weight loss programme for those who feel they have perhaps ‘over done it a bit’ or feeling low on energy. If you suffer from stubborn cellulite, water retention, acne or excess weight, The Detox Diet and skin health programme was created to work from the inside out!

To find out more ahead of the SANTAI BY EF MEDISPA opening, visit www.resortsworldbirmingham.co.uk and to find out more about some of the treatments on offer, visit www.santaiefmedispa.com. www.69-degrees.co.uk

MINI GETS MAXI Everybody loves a Mini. Probably the most credibly classless car you can buy, the Mini was, by definition, Mini but not anymore. The new MINI Clubman has grown to VW Golf like proportions and offers four side doors alongside its characteristic barn style rear doors. Available in Cooper, Cooper D and Cooper S derivatives the new Clubman is still packed with MINI character and priced from £19,995 OTR-

www.69-degrees.co.uk

not cheap but each Clubman does come as standard with the MINI Excitement Package which projects the brand logo on to the ground beneath the driver’s side door mirror when the car is opened and closed – cool! Find out more at www.mini.co.uk

The Live + Loud festival will be a never-before-seen event, which will be held both in-store and at an exclusive Digbeth venue between Thursday, 1st October and Sunday, 4th October. Visitors to the iconic store and to the special ICA curated exhibition staged in the restored industrial space in Floodgate Street in Digbeth, will be treated to an array of fashion, art, music food and beauty activities. Every key festival activity will duly reference and celebrate Birmingham’s diverse culture

and talent. The inaugural project, which is being run in conjunction with London’s ICA, has been created to celebrate the city of Birmingham not just as a centre of creativity, but also as a source of inspiration across the country. The whole event will feature commissioned works of art, photography and live music, which will draw upon Birmingham’s rich heritage. There will also be beauty and fashion pop-ups and specialist talks in store, which will resonate strongly with the city’s underground music and fashion scenes which will all be celebrated. For more details, or to book free tickets visit www.selfridges.com.

RICH

Hot on the heels of their move into Derby’s INTU centre, SIXTYNINE degrees caught up with Cara, UK retail Operations Manager of Filthy Rich, the store that specialises in celebrity inspired jewellery and accessories. Who are you and what do you know? I’m Cara, I’ve been working in retail since I left school and helped launch Filthy Rich in the UK. We opened and marketed the brand’s first UK flagship store in City of Derby in March 2014 and have just expanded into our fab new home in INTU.

The new Hershesons Blow Dry Bar is located in the Beauty Hall at Harvey Nichols in the Mailbox, and a wash and style cost £28. Walk-in appointments are available or you can book online at www. hershesons.com or email Style Concierge at stylistbirmingham@harveynichols.com.

AND

FABULOUS

What is Filthy Rich? Filthy Rich specialises in celebrity inspired jewellery. We research what celebrities are seen wearing and we find something that replicates the item for a much lower price to what the real deal would cost giving you more bling for your buck! We offer a mixture of sterling silver pieces and costume pieces of jewellery with many pieces adorned with Swarovski crystal. Sounds amazing, tell us more! Well we carry three core ranges, the Contemporary, Hollywood and Jacqueline Kennedy collection- my own favourite! The pieces are all exact replicas of the jewellery Jackie owned during her lifetime both as first lady of the USA and as Jackie Onassis. Every single piece is authoirised by the Kennedy library foundation so you know you are truly wearing a piece of history. The Jackie Kennedy collection is a unique brand to Filthy Rich; you cannot buy anywhere else in the UK and it’s no longer manufactured so once it’s gone it’s gone. So what’s next for Filthy Rich? Our relocation to INTU has seen a huge increase, both in footfall and brand interest, so the future is looking even brighter. The next step is to enhance our online offering, making it even easier to get a piece of Filthy Rich. www.filthyrichofderby.co.uk www.69-degrees.co.uk

I’ve found such amazing gems. I also always try my best to visit the McArthurGlen East Midlands Designer Outlet when I’m home, as I love the Jaeger and M&S stores there – full of great fashion bargains to snap up!”

Alice: “It’s all the colours that I love berry, mustard, deep forest green and navy. My AW dressing is more polished and put together than the rest of the year. I’m so ready for merino wool, cashmere, suede and glossy leather.”

Laura: “Invest in a great statement coat. It’s the first thing people see and a good coat always stands the test of time.”

What defines AW style to you?

Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art & Design student Ella Nisbett scooped two awards at Graduate Fashion Week: the Stuart Peters Visionary Knitwear Award and the Menswear Award. Her designs, which are the outcome of her dissertation on men’s fashion and subcultures, were inspired by the 1940s Zoot Suiters and the Sapeurs in the Congo, both male sub cultural groups which show attitude and aspiration through clothing. Judges decided to award two students from De Montfort University, Catriona Pringle and Nadia Kelly, a prestigious place in the final of the event and a chance to earn a GFW Gold Award. Catriona’s work was influenced by her granny who had a fabric shop in the 70s whilst Nadia’s creations were influenced by Liverpool under a Thatcher government, added: “My phone is already ringing and I have had magazines get in touch with me and others taking my details. 29 GROUNDBREAKING AUSTRALIAN PRODUCER AND VODKA AFICIONADO ALISON WONDERLAND HAS BEEN PRAISED BY EVERYONE FROM ANNIE MAC TO DIPLO AND WITH THE RELEASE OF HER DEBUT ALBUM IN THE UK, RUN, SHE’S SURE TO BECOME AS BIG HERE AS DOWNUNDER. SIXTYNINE DEGREES LILITH HUNT SHEPPARD SKYPED ALISON JUST BEFORE HER HEADLINE PERFORMANCE AT PHILADELPHIA’S MAD DECENT BLOCK PARTY TO TALK ABOUT MAKING THE CHANGE FROM CELLO TO DJ’ING IN STRIP CLUBS, HER NEW ALBUM AND HER OBSESSION WITH PUPPY DOGS. My dog has just arrived in LA and I’m not there to pick her up and it’s killing me! Oh no! I heard you mention your dog in a couple of interviews actually, what sort of dog do you have?

Cello I was always highly distracted by other types of music. So I’m really happy about where I’ve fallen into. It’s quite a weird leap in a way to go from that to drop some incredible dirty beats now with the music you produce.

She’s half Shihtzu and half toy poodle and her It was never the plan, it’s never where I thought names Mollie. She is so tiny and fluffy but really cool. I would be. I was honestly doing it number 1, for She sits in all my studio sessions with me and I’m just cheap therapy, number 2, because I so happy she’s now in LA. She actually loved it. So I guess the funny thing is, went on a special dog aeroplane which I think I also mentioned in that interview; “I DON’T THINK if I have to say anything to anyone out MOST OF MY there, I think the reason why I am able I actually talk about my dog a lot! I beats speak to me a lot and melodies speak to me. don’t think most of my music sounds like The Knife I mean the reason I started producing is because I but I mean they’re the reason I picked up a laptop heard a record called Silent Shout by a Swedish duo and started making electronic music. 30 Annie Mac, legend that she is and pretty much the UK’s doyenne of musical taste right now has described you as playing the best party set she’s ever heard! I know that’s crazy! I was playing in this like dingy little bar in Sydney at about 1am, pretty drunk, and I saw some woman and I said ‘oh she looks like Annie Mac’ and she came up to me and spoke to me about my track. And the next day I had people telling me to check my twitter and then she kindly said some nice things, so that was really cool. At the time I was probably playing to about 15 people, I’d had way too much whiskey and I don’t even fucking remember my set to be honest! Haha I love it! You sound like a girl after my own heart; booze, music and what’s this about strip clubs? I used to go after my shows with my crew to strip clubs. Not for any other reason than I’d just go with my friend and they’d play good rap music and the drinks were cheap. I always wanted to DJ at the strip clubs and eventually in Australia I got recognised by the strippers one night and I asked if I could DJ and they let me DJ. Then at 3am I spoke to my booking agent and I said ‘Hey what if one day I did a tour DJing in strip clubs?’ and that’s where it all kind of started. When I did my record I wanted to throw parties for people who had pre ordered it and buy the album, and I wanted them to have a fun time and do something stupid because I don’t take myself too seriously. So I actually put up a poster saying I was going to throw these parties and that if you bought the record you can come in for free, and that I was going to play and I played for about 3 hours at each of the shows. I actually didn’t write that they were strip clubs I just wrote the address, so unless they researched them you’d have no idea! I’m sure for a lot of people it was a double bonus! It was so cool though because all the strippers worked for free and they were really amazing. Honestly, so empowered: people don’t realise how empowered strippers are. There’s a bunch of men sitting there looking. They were the coolest girls and I got to play whatever I wanted, so yeah it was just a fun party. Actually the best part was the line of 500 kids lined up around the street and it was first come first serve, because the capacity was about 250. And the best part was the crowd was so respectful and no one did anything out of line and everyone just had a good time. It was really cool!

www.69-degrees.co.uk

No matter how big or small the venue, you really do seem to get people buzzing. You give me decks and I’m in my bedroom and I’m moving exactly the same. I mean my tour manager is sitting right next to me and he’s seen me practice in my room, and I’ll just still dance. So what’s next for you then? I’d love to play Glastonbury because I haven’t actually explored the UK and Europe so I’m really excited to see what happens. I have played Lollapalooza and Coachella with crazy crowds at each of these shows, I think I wouldn’t believe it. When I was a little kid I remember watching the Hulabalooza episode of The Simpsons and I always wanted to go to Lollapalooza and then I actually got to play it. And then you have the album out this September? Yeah that’s correct! I have no idea now what date I just know that it’s September and I’m shitting myself! I don’t know how that sound is over in the UK, so I’m interested to see what happens. I hope it works, I really want to go like explore the UK and Europe. IT'S IN THE DETAIL

Artistic embellishments add interest to the new season. The catwalks were filled with fabulous floral appliqués, statement jewels, sequins, embroidery and decals. The standout collection came from designer de jour Erdem, who showed beautiful embroidery cross stitching and doily-like cut-outs; while Matthew Williamson chose metallic brocade on skirts and blouses. Mary Katrantzou and Simone Rocha both played around with clever embossing techniques to create raised detailing and pattern. 40 EXCLUSIVE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW!

TEN MINUTES WITH… MR WRIGHT On Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September, 2015, Birmingham Museum andArt Gallery’s stunning Gas Hall will be transformed into a spectacular festival of fashion, with the arrival of the much-anticipated Style Birmingham Live. Featuring six catwalk shows across the weekend – all hosted by TV presenter and Heart FM DJ, Mark Wright – Style Birmingham Live will be an unmissable weekend of fashion, shopping and beauty showcasing the latest autumn/winter looks. In his only magazine interview, we were lucky enough to catch up with the fabulous Mark Wright himself to chat all things fashion and style… Hi Mark! So, first things first, have you visited Birmingham before? If so, what do you like about the city and its people? Yep, I’ve been there before and I’ve always found the people to be very energetic, always up for a party and very friendly. It’s a great place for a night out. Where are your favourite places to visit in Birmingham? I really like to visit the bars and restaurants in the Arcadian and I also love to go and watch football as the fans in Birmingham are incredible. What do you make of Birmingham’s fashion scene? Well, what I like is that any city, any town now has the ability to make its own style. There’s more freedom for people to create their own trends and it’s OK to try new things and be bolder and more confident. People in Birmingham have that. Who is your fashion inspiration? I just buy the clothes I like that I know will look good on me but if I was to say there was one person who I think gets it right every time, it would be David Beckham. Whether he’s smart or casual, he always looks good. What’s the one item of clothing/accessory that you couldn’t live without? A good suit. It doesn’t matter if it’s off the rail from a high street shop or made to measure, every man should have a suit. It’s the one outfit that can instantly make you feel like you can take on the world. Have you ever had a fashion disaster? Probably when I was younger, but who hasn’t? We all learn as we grow up but you need that sort of stuff to learn from and look back on and laugh! You’ve done some modelling in the past – what tips would you give to people who are interested in a career www.69-degrees.co.uk

in modelling? Just beware of the sharks – the ones that will charge you to create your portfolio of photos. If you truly have what it takes to be a model, a good scout will see that before looking at the photos. I’m not a model as such so none of it comes easy but I like to go to the gym and I’m careful about what I eat so if that means I’m asked to model from time to time, then that’s cool. A radio show, your own range of men’s and women’s fragrances, TV shows and live events such as Style Birmingham Live – you’re a very busy guy! Do you have any other exciting things lined up for the future that you can tell us about? I’m very lucky – I get to do the stuff I enjoy and every week for me is different. I love my Heart FM show and hearing from people about the music I’ve selected. Thankfully the TV stuff is going from strength to strength and we’re having some pretty exciting conversations about that right now but you’ll just have to stay tuned. I think I’m done in the reality TV world but I don’t think you can completely shut yourself off from any one aspect in TV because you never know what’s going to come along. Someone might come up with an amazing idea that I just have to be part of. But until then, it’s all about my own entertainment shows; The Gossip, Surprise Surprise, The Dengineers and the other one we’re currently developing.

I’LL BE BAKU BAKU, HOME TO THIS YEAR’S EUROPEAN GAMES. KEVIN URQUHART VISITED AZERBAIJAN’S CAPITAL AS IT WAS PREPARING FOR THE GAMES AND CELEBRATING ITS NOVRUZ FESTIVAL; A FESTIVAL OF LIGHT WHERE THE PAST IS LITERALLY PUT BEHIND THEM… One of Europe’s newest member states - and at the furthest reach of (Middle) Eastern Europe, Azerbaijan - Baku has long enjoyed recognition in commercial circles the world over for its rich reserves of oil and natural gas: it is the originating point of the Siberian Pipeline, yet it’s a city not known for its tourism, much less its culture. All that looked set to change when the city showcased the athletic prowess of over 6000 athletes across 18 purposebuilt arenas. The games were a massive marketing opportunity for the city (and country) yet with limited news coverage and some distinctly old school Soviet style www.69-degrees.co.uk

PR disasters along the way, it’s uncertain whether the marketing plan actually worked. That said, one thing that is certain is that Baku is rapidly transforming. Baku is a UNESCO World Heritage site (thanks to the 12th Century Palace of Shirvanshah in the walled fortress of the Old City being added to the heritage list in 2000 due to its

rich, often bloody history) and the level of investment enjoyed in the limestone city is breathtaking and quite unlike anything witnessed before. Under former Soviet dictatorship rule, the city became an independent state just 23 years ago and is striving to create its own new path – hence the colossal investment - although its Soviet roots still flourish in some aspects - the benign billboard grin of the President is never far from your gaze. LeadingtherebirthoftheAbershon peninsular is architecture: Baku boasts some of the most striking skylines of any city the world

51 over. The iconic and spectacular Flame Towers being one such example – you may have seen it on some of the BBC’s coverage of the Games. The award-winning British-built (and stunning) Aliyev Centre is built in the shape of the President’s signature when viewed from above and incorporates library, exhibition centre - the floor incorporating Mini Azerbaijan shows in scale the investment in the city’s architecture - and conference centre is off the scale and relegates building such as Selfridges Birmingham to the sidelines. Their architectural intention is to break records and be the biggest at everything. A ’World City’, in their words. But it’s not just bricks and mortar; the Government is building a new series of islands called Khazar, just off the Baku coast, which will feature the World’s tallest building - beating the Burj and Kingdom Tower at 3,645ft. They are building for the future rather than making monuments to the past and they are (re)constructing at an astonishing pace. These developments have been quickly consumed by international hoteliers such as JW Marriott, Hilton, the Four Seasons and Hyatt who have all spotted the potential. The smart money has also been invested wisely in infrastructure to entertain the expected masses: Baku promenade is like a catwalk of the most famous names in high-end fashion with Tom Ford starting the procession at the foot of the Maiden Tower, closely followed by Givenchy, Chloe, Alexander McQueen, Tiffany, Bvlgari, Dior and Jimmy Choo - in fact, almost every luxury brand In the world. Quite where Debenhams fits in is less apparent, but it’s another sign that British brands have invaded. This investment also comes at a price. The divide between rich and poor is abundantly evident:

they are making the White City of Baku - both in attractions and residential - beyond the reach of the typical Azerbaijanian; evidence of this distinction between the new and old town (bartul) and the new and old money (or lack of) can be witnessed most magnificently from the rotating 360 bar at the Hilton, which, by the way, is unmissable for sunset cocktails. Sorry to be shallow, but you are on holiday. It is further apparent on the oil fields and their supporting towns - for it is oil that fuels Baku’s growth. Despite being less than thirty minutes from Baku - life in these towns couldn’t be more different. The Oil fields of Zabrat Township offer, on one hand, bleak living and devastated, infertile lands in the eyeline of the multimillion-manat Heydar Aliyev International airport, yet it is vibrant and bustling. Flashes of colour and ornamentation are peddled on street intersections, lambs are skinned by the roadside and Eastern European Ladas dominate the roads. Yet the majority of tourists will never experience this true beating heart of Baku. It is when you do that you see the city in context (and contrast). Baku is a city on the verge of exceptional things. It is a place in progress whose deep, oil-filled pockets will undoubtedly see it ultimately achieve its ambitions of World City status, but our best advice to seasoned travellers is to visit sooner than later if you want to peer behind the exciting facade and see the best bits of Baku before they’re erased from history. So, is The City of Fire the next Dubai? They’re banking on it...

THE FACTS WHAT TO DO IN BAKU: Museum of modern art Maiden tower in Old City Visit Concert Hall Sunset Cocktails at 360 Bar at Hilton Lunch at Flame Towers Burning mountain Petroglyphics at Gobostan National Park Ski at the nearby Caucasus Mountains WHERE WE STAYED IN BAKU: Hyatt Regency WHERE WE ATE: Pasifico Mangal CURRENCY: Manat (1 manat is roughly equal to a dollar) BEST ADVICE: Don’t let out of date guidebooks colour your impression. Baku is a colourful, energetic city that is the right side of bonkers. Its desire to be five star is not yet met by the Dubai-standard levels of service, though, as many of the big brands are franchised operations.

E S S E N T I A L D O W N LO A D S LANA DEL REY - HONEYMOON Lana’s style has remained consistent since she blew onto the music scene over four years ago and her third studio album continues to echo that sentiment. With her rich voice and plenty of sultry vibes, her first single ‘High by the Beach,’ – which she describes as a hip-hop record (with trap influences, of course) - is exactly what we’d expect. It’s been reported that Mark Ronson has produced the album and with a Nina Simone cover on the tracklist, we’re sure it won’t disappoint – even if she is still singing the same old tune. SWIM DEEP - MOTHERS Now a fivepiece, the Birmingham b a n d ’ s latest piece of work h a s been described by the boys as a ‘marked departure’ from their 2013 debut. Having already released a multitude of exceptionally vibey tracks, their new album is supposedly a nod to the true creators of the universe. With bandmate William explaining that they’ve been inspired by the likes of Kanye West and Fleetwood Mac (both combined with acid house), you can be sure to expect a pretty new and exciting sound. DISCLOSURE - CARACAL Following on from the huge success of their debut ‘Settle’, the two brothers have been keeping busy with a hectic schedule of touring and producing. Their latest track ‘Willing & Able’ featuring soul artist Kwabs isn’t www.69-degrees.co.uk

exactly ‘club banger’ material but as one half of the team Guy Lawrence explains, the second album is ‘still very club-influenced but every song is a fully structured pop song.’ And with big names like Lorde and The Weeknd on the tracklist, plus another team up with Sam Smith (resulting in the brilliant single ‘Omen’), we’re sure that the duo’s new release will continue to prove their talent. CHRVCHES EVERY OPEN EYE They were included on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list as one of the most promising new music talents and have since become winners of the British Breakthrough Act award at this year’s Brits. The Scottish band’s latest single ‘Leave a Trace’ is reminiscent of their usual sound – synth and pop, infused with subtly barbed

yet sentimental lyrics – only this time round, it’s more thematic. Staying true to their original roots, the threesome wanted their new music to sound just as spontaneous as their first release and two years later, their sophomore album feels like a natural progression. LITTLE MIX GET WEIRD With their first album going platinum and breaking chart records, the Little Mix girls just keep going from strength to strength. Having already secured a multitude of top ten singles under their belt, their latest ‘Black Magic’ has spent three weeks at number one becoming the first by a girl group since 2007! Now onto their third studio album, the girls describe it as having a completely new sound and more personality-driven – be sure to except fun, bold and colourful vibes. #guiltypleasure

61 AUDIOPHILE by KISS FM’s CHARLIE HEDGES

CHARLIE'S ANGELS TOUGH LOVE’s Alex and Stef have been gaining support from DJs and producers across the industry for their remixing abilities. With their energetic, bassy house sets and remixes for the likes of Le Youth, Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne, these boys are well and truly cemented in the house scene. They’re are also part of the KISS FM family, where I have a Friday and Saturday night house show, as they have their own show on Kiss Fresh (Kiss FM’s sister station). We can expect more great things on their second single too, a remake of a classic hit with R&B legend Ginuwine. A throwback to the 1996 classic, it feels even bigger than the original, sitting nicely amongst the house scene and crossing over into the commercial world. I can’t wait to see what the boys have under their belts the next few months.

ADAM RICKFORS - MIGHTY (DUB MIX) As part of the sampler album for Cr2’s Ibiza 2015 compilation, Adam Rickfors ‘Mighty’ does what it says on the tin. His progressive sound from Stockholm is acknowledged in this track where you can hear influences from The Prodigy, Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers, all whom have inspired him over the years. With many of his tracks sitting comfortably in the Beatport Top 10 in the past, I have no doubt ‘Mighty’ will do exactly the same. LOST FREQUENCIES – ARE YOU WITH ME (CROPPER REMIX) If it hasn’t earned a place in your music library by now then it

certainly should do with Cropper on the remix. Signed to Armada, Lost Frequencies, real name Felix De Laey is a Belgian DJ and producer who made a name for himself with this remix of ‘Are You With Me’ originally by country artist Easton Corbin. The track has been remixed quite a few times since being released but this remix really stands out and is my favourite by a mile. GREGORI KLOSMAN – TELL YOU Already in good stead for a great 2016, Guru Records label owner Gregori releases ‘Tell You’. A masterpiece with its melodic sections and euphoric breakdowns, it explores the current

positioning of house music across many house genres and is definitely one to influence the dancefloors over the next few months. This track is straight up house, locking us into a deep house sound from the offset then moving into a melodic breakdown MICHAEL BRUN & DIRTY TWIST – WOO This is Michael Brun’s latest collaboration with newbies Dirty Twist released on his very own label Kid Coconut Records. Dirty Twist add their fresh new sound to the track bringing their new fresh ears to the scene. This will be their very first label release as duo Dirty Twist. ‘Woo’ is a progressive beast taking the floors by storm, tailor made for main stages all over the world with its lead synths and drums.

T e n st o ry

63 No stranger to SIXTYNINE degrees, Disgraceland, also known as Leicester based producer and DJ John Stanhope was one of the original creators of the STUDIO 69 club night sound that filled the dancefloors of Bam Bu Da, Weavers, Media Nottingham, Bambu and Bed @ Gatecrasher in Birmingham back in the day. Clubland may well have changed since then but Disgraceland is still heavily involved in the creation of some epic sounds remixing the likes of Armand Van Helden and Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius. We caught up with him ahead of the release of his second EP, Scarlett Rain, released on US label Sol*Selectas, an exciting fusion of heavy beats and ambient soundscapes.

the sky had this ominous, red tinge to it. I pulled over and recorded the lyrics and the beat into my iPhone, then drove home, hit the studio and wrote. My wife, Jo, and I recorded the vocals the next day and as my daughter, Scarlett was with me in the studio for much of the time I thought that I’d give her a name check too.

You’ve been heavily inspired by Moombahton in the past, how has the genre influenced your sound and outlook?

About 2004. I was taking a break from DJing and was feeling frustrated about being out of the scene. I’d spend every available hour sat at home with a laptop and a copy of Reason, just working it all out. Then, at a perfect time, really, the whole Moombahton thing came along - there was a scene that was small enough that when you made an edit, you got feedback from people who were out there playing the tracks..

Moombahton was an incubator that allowed me to develop ‘my’ sound without feeling that I had to conform to anything. The fact that I could deviate so far from the norm within the genre, do my own thing, and have that appreciated by my peers was a total revelation and it allowed me to explore my creativity in a way that other genres wouldn’t have. The new EP has less Moombahton influences and more deep house/techno, was this a conscious decision? Absolutely, yes. In many ways it’s all about going back to my roots whilst not forgetting the Moombahton vibe that I owe a lot to. I wanted it to be an EP that would cross a number of genres whilst keeping a single theme; when I played the EP to an old friend of mine who I spent a lot of time with back in the 90’s the first thing he said to me was, “This sounds like everything we listened to, and loved” which validated much of what I had wanted to do. How did the EP come about? The EP name and title track came about as I was driving out of Leicester on the backroads during a big storm. It was summer, and the smell of the rain was thick, I looked across the fields and

Warehaus Soul was based on a track that I had written a year or two before and never got around to doing anything with but The Dust in My Groove was a beast to write. 80 or 90 revisions over two years with countless tweaks to every element. It’s probably the most accomplished thing I have written. How did you get into producing music? Is there a defining moment where it all started for you?

You have a remix by Curses on your EP – is there anyone else you’re working with or who you aspire to work with? Right now I’m collaborating with my label partner and good friend, Rob Morris AKA Яomor and I’m also working on an EP with Sabo (Sol*Selectas’ Label Boss). Even though he has years of experience on me, he’s so supportive of what I’m doing that it’s a great incentive to push boundaries further. Over the past few years, house music seems to have made a comeback – how do you feel about artists such as Disclosure bringing the genre back into the mainstream? I’m not sure. I guess that it’s healthy in some ways but what I don’t see is the club vibe that was there 10 years ago and before. People are less willing to go and listen to music where the DJ takes risks and that’s what it’s all about for me. Scarlett Rain is released on Sol Selectas and available to download at pro.beatport.com/release/ scarlett-rain/1586075

It was a delicious opening to the night, with accompanying wines flowing as beautifully as the conversation. Main dishes included long horn sirloin steak in teriyaki sauce, seabass with sweet chill sauce and Cantonese crispy chicken, all with a side of fried rice and Singapore noodles. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun, with the entire restaurant at capacity, allowing bloggers to immerse themselves in a true reflection of the Henry Wong experience, with satisfied customers and a live singer covering the classics in a soft and breathy voice. Finally, the pièce de resistance of the night was a stunning ice sculpture surrounded by tropical fresh fruit, mixed fruit fritters and vanilla ice cream. Bloggers left full and happy, with an Oriental inspired goodie bag in hand, filled with traditional Chinese beer and food. We’d highly recommend a visit to this exquisite restaurant, whether you book yourself in for a meal, or attend one of their fantastic inhouse events. In November, they’ll be hosting a Bollywood themed night on 26th November. To book your spot, just give them a call on 0121 427 9799 or pop in to see them at 283 High Street, Birmingham, West Midlands B17 9QH. Images by Jas Sansi

REVIEW: BRUNCH @ GAS STREET SOCIAL Gas Street Social is a quirky-cool restaurant on the main stretch at the back of the Mailbox. As the name would suggest, they’re all about socialising, with large sharing tables, intimate booth areas and a cosy ‘snug’ area, providing the perfect venue for quick bites and lazy lunches. They’ve also recently just launched a fantastic new brunch menu, and we here at SIXTYNINE decided to pop in to see what they have to offer! The menu is vast, from sweet fluffy pancakes, to virtuous granola, full English breakfasts to delights like eggs benedict and sausage sarnies. They believe in making the most of the abundance of what the land provides and their chefs work closely with suppliers to source local fresh fruit & vegetables, free range eggs & pork! This is most definitely reflective in the taste, particularly in the ‘Gas Street Works’ which is a very hearty and delicious take on the full English. It tasted fresh and didn’t leave that greasy coating on your tongue, and the eggs benedict we ordered were a dream. The combination between the runny egg, the sweetness of the honey roasted ham and the creaminess of the hollandaise sauce was brunch perfection. Being slightly worse for wear after the night before, and out of pure journalistic curiosity,

we opted for a few brunch bellinis with our meals- you can actually get bottomless bellinis throughout the brunch period for just fifteen pounds per person- and they definitely perked us up a little bit! Their free rehydration station is also a god send when you’re feeling ever so slightly delicate. Situated on their central sharing table as you walk in, there is a selection of carafes of iced water infused with fresh fruit and herbs like pink grapefruit & raspberry, cucumber & mint, lemon & rosemary and more. They also have mini bottles of fresh milk with straws in for the kids which are also complimentary. And if that lot doesn’t sort you out, you can also order a half a pint of berocca with your brunch – a stroke of genius! In short, if you’re hungover, GSS is perfect for you! The atmosphere is chilled and relaxed; perfect for when you’ve had a heavy night, and they employ a live acoustic duo to play calming yet upbeat jazz throughout the brunch period. Everything about Gas Street Social’s brunch experience is cleverly thought out and very well executed. We’ll definitely be going back, and next time, we’re ordering the berocca! The Gas Street Social brunch menu runs every Saturday & Sunday and is served from 9 a m u n t i l 1 p m . THE BANDERAS OF COOKING COMES TO BIRMINGHAM

Spanish-born chef and larger-than-life personality, Omar Allibhoy is bringing the Tapas Revolution to Grand Central Birmingham this September. Dubbed the ‘Antonio Banderas of cooking’ by Gordon Ramsey, he’s a man on a mission to bring the joy of authentic tapas food to the UK. We caught up with the successful Chef ahead of his Tapas Revolution launch... Why did you decide to come to Birmingham and why Grand Central? "Birmingham has a great food scene and is increasingly becoming a destination city – for tourists and for businesses – and it’s gaining a really positive reputation. I wanted to get involved in the buzz happening here and bring a real taste of Spain to the city centre. Grand Central is a perfect location – right in the bustle of Birmingham where commuters and shoppers can drop into our tapas bar for a drink and some good food with friends, and then move on with whatever they’re doing." What can we expect and what makes your tapas better/different to other tapas restaurants? "We’ve got lots of great vegetarian, meat and fish dishes for people to share – and I deal directly with artisans and producers back in Spain so we use authentic, high quality ingredients that make all the difference. The menu is inspired by family recipes and the culinary culture of my hometown, Madrid. It includes classics like Calamares fritos (deep

fried squid with aioli) and Croquetas de jamón (deepfried Iberico ham and béchamel croquettes) that everyone will want to try. There are also some dishes that I’ve put my own touch on, for example my take on the traditional ‘bocadillo’ (Spanish version of the Great British sandwich). I replace the crusty bread with a soft brioche bun to create the ‘buncadillo’ – the Spanish burger. There are different fillings to choose from including ‘Chorizo’ – grilled chorizo sausage, rocket and honey sauce and ‘Morcilla’ – black pudding, roasted peppers and fried egg. Open all day, the menu guides you through Spain from morning to dinner. A full breakfast menu offers a wide selection of cooked dishes as well as delicious churros - Spanish doughnuts tossed in cinnamon and sugar served with hot thick dipping chocolate. Grab a Spanish style coffee and delicious Valencian orange freshly squeezed juice. “Tapas is more than food”, he continues, “It’s part of everyday culture: food and life are always best shared”. We couldn’t agree more and look forward to joining the Tapas Revolution later this month. The new Tapas Revolution in Grand Central, Birmingham opens in late September 2015. Opening hours will be Mon – Fri: 7am – 11pm, Sat: 8am – 10pm, Sun: 10am – 10pm

LASTWORD You may recognize Tony Maudsley as the super tanned, super camp hairdresser Kenneth Du Beke in the hit TV series Benidorm, and you’ll soon see much more of his high camp antics as he takes on the infamous role of Edna Turnblad in the Curve Theatre’s production of Hairspray coming to Leicester’s Curve and Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre this Winter,. SIXTYNINE degrees’ Sarah Potter caught up with him to talk about moving from hairdresser to Hairspray as well as his impressive career starring in films with the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Johnny Depp and the Harry Potter cast. I

suppose first thing’s first, let’s start from the beginning. How did you get into acting?

Well I’m originally f r o m Liverpool, and I actually got into acting by default really. I got into trouble at school and the alternative to detention was attending drama lessons. Naturally I chose the lessons and as it turns out the teacher was really great. They also ran an after school children’s drama school which I decided to attend and from that I just got the acting bug and carried on. You’ve been in some pretty huge blockbuster films. Including Harry Potter where you played Hagrid’s halfbrother Grawp. How did that come about? It came about quite specifically. I was in a film called Vanity Fair with Reese Witherspoon. I played her suitor Joseph “Jos” Sedley. He was quite a soulful character, very warm and likeable, a little misunderstood and a little strange looking I suppose. The Director of Harry Potter had expressed that this was exactly the essence and soul of what he wanted for Grawp. I worked with him for a few weeks on getting into character and he offered me the role. Speaking of characters, who’s been your favourite character that you’ve played so far. Overall? I think I’ve got to say Kenneth in Benidorm. It’s still ongoing and I’m still loving it. It really is a gift of a part and I get the best lines! I get to say everything as Kenneth that I wouldn’t be able to say in real life So how did the role of Kenneth come about? Benidorm was actually just a normal run of the mill audition. I had originally auditioned for Steve Pemberton’s role, the Dad Mick, but wasn’t successful. Three years later they asked me if I’d like to audition for the new gay hairdresser they were introducing and I jumped at the chance. Funnily enough when I went to the audition, the people who were www.69-degrees.co.uk

there to play Kenneth were all very small and skinny, he was going to be very wiry I think. So, the Hairspray tour is about to start- are you stage ready? Well I’ve been going to the gym a fair bit to lose a few pounds. The choreographer, who’s fantastic, really pushes people to get the most out of it, so I want to make sure I’m ready physically. There’s obviously a lot of movement and dancing, so I think the gym will help. Hairspray is the irresistible feel-good show that is guaranteed to have you dancing the night away. Welcome to the 60s where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams. You Can’t Stop The Beat as she sets out to dance her way onto national TV with The Nicest Kids In Town. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way! You’re stepping into some big shoes with Edna. I’m going to bring my own Edna. It’s Edna 2015. We’re changing the mould with new choreography, new costumes, makeup, everything. So I think for the fans it will be nice to see an updated version of the characters too. It’s a really exciting time for Hairspray. Fantastic! And have you managed to step out in any Edna style outfits to prepare youself? How about the makeup? I’ve done a couple of photoshoots with a face full of makeup but it’s really the heels I’ve got to get used to wearing! Well we’re really looking forward to seeing you in it, it sounds all very exciting, and you’ve got a great cast. We definitely have! We’ve got Peter Duncan as Edna’s husband Wilbur, Freya Sutton as Edna’s daughter Tracy, Claire Sweeney as Velma Von Tussle and Brenda Edwards as Motormouth Maybelle.

Hairspray premieres at Leicester’s Curve from the 9th to the 19th September and at the New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham from the 14th Dec to the 2nd Jan. To book tickets visit www.curveonline.co.uk for Leicester or www.atgtickets for Birmingham.
