9 NATRULIQUE AT THE ORGANIC EXPERIENCE

Are you aware that most conventional personal care products, especially shampoos and skin care lotions, contain harmful synthetic chemicals like sodium lauryl and laureth sulfates, propylene glycol, and paraben preservative systems? These chemicals can build up over time and clog pores, leading to the loss of oxygen, ultimately causing skin irritations and allergies.

Here is where NATULIQUE products come in. NATULIQUE products are created from a simple premise: No dangerous ingredients! The formulations used by The Organic Experience in St Martin’s Square, Leicester are the safest available in the professional beauty industry today. They believe in ingredient integrity and mission consistency, beginning with organic ingredients, whenever possible, to keep dangerous chemical preservative systems and lathering agents out of the end product. At NATULIQUE they maintain the highest standards of quality throughout formulation and production. Most of the ingredients in each and every product of the NATULIQUE Hair Care product range are USDA and ECOCERT certified organic. We are also proud to announce that NATULIQUE Certified Organic products are on the approval list presented by third party authority. All of the NATULIQUE Permanent Colours are 95% natural and includes certified organic ingredients. Naturlique products can be found at The Organic Experience. Find out more at natulique.com or call in to The Organic Experience, St Martin’s Square, Leicester. 0116 251 4066 theorganicexperience.co.uk

Our Spring issue featured an amazing competition to win a Shopping Spree at Intu Shopping Centres Derby and Nottingham and we had thousands of people enter. Two lucky individuals won a £500 gift card each and we went along to help them spend it! Claire Tidswell from Deeping Gate couldn’t quite believe that she was chosen and was excited to spend part of the gift card in one of her favourite stores, House of Fraser at Victoria Centre in Nottingham. With the help of MUA and stylist Trixie from Libertii Beau, Claire picked out an outfit for her upcoming holiday in France. Claire was also treated to a mini makeover by Trixie as part of the competition. The second winner, Alyn Carrahar from Derby was unsure where to start but finding out that Alyn was into heavy rock music, Trixie headed straight to Asylum for inspiration. Trixie picked out a selection of rocker t-shirts as well as vintage shirts, hoodies and a punk denim jacket for Alyn to try. Seeing how the items could be layered and matched together, Alyn chose an outfit and combined them with a pair of low top dark red Vans.

At our regular Wine Wednesday tasting sessions, these two little charmers have already worked their magic with our customers. First up is a real stunner from the Alto Adige region of Italy – Erste & Neur Pinot Grigio 2015 (£14). Graced with a lovely purity, a wonderful warmth that radiates through the wine even though this is a fresh mineral-driven style of Pinot Grigio. It’s great as an aperitif but it comes into its own when served with fish dishes, especially mussels or oysters. The second wine that wowed is Quint Milu 2014 from Ribera de Duero in Spain (£12.75), created by German Blanco, a young maker who is championing a fresher style of Tinto del Pais, the local name for Tempranillo. Working with old vines planted at more than 900 meters above sea level gives this delicious red just a hint of rusticity and great freshness. This worked a treat with our cheese plate on the night. Siofra O’Brien is the Wine Specialist at Harvey Nichols Birmingham. Join her in store every Wednesday to enjoy complimentary taster sessions from 7pm-8pm. WE WEREN’T EXPECTING THAT

14

Well we were really. British singersongwriter Jamie Lawson, the first to sign to Ed Sheeran’s own label, Gingerbread Man Records, is embarking on a UK tour this October, stopping off at Birmingham’s O2 Academy and Leicester’s De Montfort Hall. Jamie, who first gained recognition with his hit single, Wasn’t Expecting That, last year has jumped from a few hundred capacity venues to supporting Ed on his mammoth UK stadium tour, playing two nights with him at Dublin’s Croke Park and now he has a tour of his own.

Supporting Jamie on tour will be special guest, Calum Scott, who you may recognise from Britain’s Got Talent and his cover of Robyn’s Dancing on my Own, which went viral in over 34 countries. Now signed to Capitol Records, Scott is currently working on his debut album. Looking for an emotion filled gig? Make sure you get your tickets at academymusicgroup. com or demontforthall.co.uk

ORANGE TREE NOW IN DERBY

Derby’s newest bar, the Orange Tree, will offer something a little different to both locals and students alike. It’ll be a place to relax with friends, enjoy good drinks and music in a really exciting environment. Opening on George Street, the building dates back to 1911 and was originally offices for the local gas works. Its new owners have worked hard to bring back some of that post-Victorian character. Split over two floors, The Orange Tree will open during the evenings with a heavy focus on cocktails using only premium spirits, craft beers and an extensive gin selection. The Orange Tree in Derby will be opening at 5 George Street, DE1 1EH on Friday 23rd September. For further information visit their twitter page: @orangetreederby

MAKING WAVES IN BIRMINGHAM Showcasing over two hours of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s surface, the Ocean Film Festival World Tour returns to Birmingham’s Crescent Theatre on the 5th October. This year’s festival features an exceptional and diverse programme of films capturing the raw power and beauty of the Ocean, whilst celebrating the surfers, kayakers and oceanographers, who live for the sea’s salt spray; who chase the crests of waves; and who marvel at the mysteries of the big blue. WICK PUB AND KITCHEN DERBY One of Derby’s oldest pub’s has been given a new lease of life by local entrepreneur Damian Pendleton. The Wick Pub and Kitchen on Derby’s Wardwick not only serves handmade pizzas and burgers and pub tapas (the black pudding lollipops with chilli chutney are to die for!) but over the weekend The Wick plays host to some pretty special club nights, live music performances and northern soul nights. The Wick have even created their own home flavoured spirits giving the big boys a run for their money.

GHOST BAR

Ghost bar was birthed from the ashes of the former sun lounge residence. Focusing on a stadium atmosphere by collaborating with the best local and national talent available, the venue has gone from strength to strength. Ghost bar is Derby’s premier outdoor bar, combining mesmerising LED Tunnels with strong drink offers.

BUNKER The Bunker is at the top of the midlands underground house scene. With an emphasis on assessable, yet dirty beats the bunker boys know how to throw a party. Which is why ghost bar play host to the Forbidden Forest after party with Bunker boys warming up for the talented Joe Quinn and GW Harrison.

CLASS Damian has operated numerous successful independent stores across the East Midlands and this is his first step into the hospitality scene. To aid in this venture he appointed operations manager Adam Firth, a former general manager of Annie's Burger Shack and West End bars.

The Garage scene is back, and it appears to evolved to a new crowd of followers. This safe rave scene is going from strength to strength combining new talented DJs along with legends such as DJ EJ headlining previous events

IF YOU ARE UNAWARE OF RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE - ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING REALITY SHOWS - THEN JUST PLAIN SHAME ON YOU! AND THAT’S THE T! WINNER OF THE 2014 SERIES OF THE RUNAWAY NETFLIX SUCCESS, BAD GIRL BIANCA, AKA ROY HAYLOCK, SHOWED SHE HAD ENOUGH CHARISMA, UNIQUENESS, NERVE AND TALENT TO DECIMATE THE COMPETITION AND BECOME AMERICA’S NEXT DRAG SUPERSTAR. INFAMOUS FOR HER SKILLED AND SHADY COMEDY, BIANCA DEL RIO IS THE QUEEN OF THE ONE LINER AND SINCE BEING CROWNED AMERICA’S NEXT DRAG SUPERSTAR IN 2014, BIANCA HAS GONE ONTO TOURING THE WORLD WITH OTHER DRAG RACE QUEENS, TOURED WITH HER SHOW ROLODEX OF HATE AND NOW SHE IS BACK IN THE UK AND COMING TO BIRMINGHAM WITH HER ‘NOT TODAY SATAN’ TOUR. WE WERE GAGGING TO HEAR THAT BIANCA HAD RECENTLY UNDERGONE THROAT SURGERY AND WAS RECUPERATING WHILST ON VACATION SO WE TOOK TO KEYBOARD AND HAD A WEBCHAT WITH THE NEWEST QUEEN OF MEAN TO TALK ALL THINGS DRAG, TRUMP AND OF COURSE WHAT FANS CAN EXPECT FROM HER NEW SHOW...

www.69-degrees.co.uk

28 Hi Bianca, it’s amazing to E-Meet you – what are we interrupting you doing?

in the drag world though. Television is a powerful thing and I’m grateful for the exposure.

I’m answering these questions from my welldeserved vacation!! I’m currently in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico taking a week to sleep before the madness begins.

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve been recognised and how did you deal with it?

How do you explain the phenomenon that is RuPaul’s Drag Race? It is unreal. It’s impossible to explain, but I must say as a 20 year drag veteran that I am beyond grateful for it. It’s a platform that gives Drag global exposure unlike anything else before. It’s a truly fascinating phenomenon. So spill the T, what’s it really like on the show? Is there a lot that we don’t get to see? Despite what any individual who loses on the show might say, there really is no “T”. It’s a very welloiled machine. None of it is scripted. The editors don’t “create” footage. What you see is what happens naturally when you put competitive drag queens together for a few weeks and take away their communication with the outside world. Bitches lose their minds! Things happen very quickly and it’s sink or swim. Most of them drown. What are RuPaul and Michelle Visage really like? Michelle is a hoot! We only get to see her on the runway during the show, but since then we’ve become great friends. RuPaul is the real deal! It’s been a few years since you were crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar, what’s life been like since you were on the show? It’s been over 3 years since we began filming our season! It’s been a truly amazing journey. It’s been a lot of hard work though...which I enjoy. Most queens think once you win, you’re all set. That’s not the case at all!! That’s when the real work begins. I work harder now than ever before. Do you get more mainstream recognition now? Mainstream? I don’t think that’s the case. Definitely www.69-degrees.co.uk

Well, first of all, it’s a huge compliment for anyone to notice me. People are beyond kind. The weirdest place...at a urinal in NYC...and now we’re dating. Do people try and read you? Do you destroy them? Oh God, no! It’s not that serious. I love a good verbal battle though. Funny is funny. Who’s the most evil? Bianca Del Rio or Roy Haylock? I think it’s pretty equal. They both work well together, but Bianca can usually get away with a lot more. There’s something about the wig, makeup, and dress that lets her get away with murder. What happens when the hair and the makeup goes on? Does Roy disappear? I don’t wear makeup!! Actually Roy is always there. I’m reminded of it every time I go to the bathroom. Does Bianca let you do things that Roy never could? Bianca has opened many doors for me, but I never hide behind her. Many people have said that your humour goes too far - do you believe you do or are people over sensitive? It’s very simple...if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Where does all that shade come from? You mentioned on the show your Rolodex of Hate, also the name of your last touring show, but where does all the sass and shade stem from? Everything is not sass & shade. To me, it’s just honesty. I say what most people are thinking. It’s all a joke. Starting with myself. My childhood definitely had an impact on my comedy though. I explain it in my “Rolodex Of Hate” show...available at vimeo.com/rolodex

So your new touring show is aptly named ‘Not Today Satan’- one of your infamous catch phrases and one we have totally stolen in the office. How is it different to your previous show Rolodex of Hate?

LIFE’S A DRAG

Ha! That’s great to hear! Well, the new show deals with different topics...drag, reality television, and traveling. So much has happened during and since the last tour which gave me lots of material for this show. What can fans expect from the show? Expect the unexpected. Have a drink, sit back, forget about the world outside, and let’s all have a good laugh. One of our favourite clips of you is in bed with Joan Rivers. The chemistry was fabulous. Who else would you love to perform with? What a treat that was!! I was so honoured to have had that opportunity with Joan. Who else would I love to perform with? Ugh...I’m a gay man... there’s so many! Cher, Judge Judy, Betty White, Madonna...you know...the usual line up. The U.S. election is coming up. What would you do if Trump became president? I would do what every other intelligent U.S. Citizen would do...move to Canada!! They say impersonation is the finest form of flattery, but what would you do if Melanie Trump, stole your act/look? Well, if anyone could steal it and do it great, it would be Melanie! God bless that bitch! What’s next for Bianca del Rio? Albums? Movies? Therapy? Album - never! Therapy - why bother?! No therapist should have to go through that kind of torture. Movie - yes! “Hurricane Bianca” is finally being released!! Go to hurricanebianca.com for details. Bianca Del Rio will be touring with her ‘Not Today Satan’ show in the UK early next year and will be at The Symphony Hall in Birmingham on Monday 6th February 2017. Visit nottodaysatan.seetickets.com for tickets.

Now if you cannot wait till Bianca’s tour to get your dose of drag, you’re in luck as this December some of your favourite queens are touring with a Christmas themed show. The Christmas Extravaganza show will be hosted by the Drag Mother every Queen needs, Michelle Visage, who is a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Joining her for an evening of song, dance, performance, stiletto shoes, KiKi’ and rhinestones will be US Drag Queens and Drag Race contenders; Alaska, Manila Luzon, Detox, Katya and Phi Phi O’Hara. Xmas Queens live tour, starts in Glasgow on Saturday the 3rd of December and will come to the O2 institute in Birmingham. For tickets visit seetickets.com/tour/ christmas-queens www.69-degrees.co.uk

NO 50 PINFOLD STREET

Founded by brothers Jamie and Jordan Quinn, No 50 offers a bespoke shopping destination for gents, ladies and children that offers well-made, functional clothing that is geared for outdoor life without sacrificing personality or practicality. The concept draws on their rich experience in both design and retail; Jamie studied Art and Design and was a key designer in many high profile brand campaigns. Jordan went on to work in independent fashion stores – establishing himself in many roles in the industry including brand manager, visual merchandiser and menswear buyer. “During our respective early careers we both developed a first-hand understanding of what sets apart really good independent stores from corporate department giants: personal service and building a rapport with customers. This helped us not just style the customer but we also learnt more about what the customer wanted and more importantly what was missing in store.” Brands stocked include Calvin Klein, Gant, Happy Socks, Henri Lloyd, Hunter, J Shoes, Kappa , Komono Sunglasses, Komono Watches, Le Coq Sportif, Pearly King, Peregrine, Timberland, Victorinox, Volcom, Weekend Offender. 50 Pinfold Street, B2 4AY Birmingham. t r av e l l e r LATIN FEVER

The music, the food, the language – Spanish culture has fascinated people for hundreds of years. Spain’s cities, like Madrid, are amazing holiday destinations, but if you want your Spanish a bit closer to the equator, you need to get to Latin America. Luckily, it’s closer than you think. Iberia has regular flights from Birmingham to many Latin American cities via Madrid. With only one stop and great connection times, you can reach your Latin paradise in no time.

NTINA ES, ARGETES) R I A S O N U BUE , 30 MIN (15 HOURS

SANTIAGO, CHILE (18 HOURS, 30 MINUTES)

Nicknamed the “Paris of South America”, Buenos Aires exudes charm and sophistication. Grand tree-lined avenues, glamorous nightlife, a world-class opera house, and packed football stadiums all contribute to this eclectic and elegant city. Beef it up: Steak-lovers – rejoice. Argentina produces some of the world’s best beef, and Buenos Aires is the place to try it. Head to a parrilla or steakhouse to indulge your inner carnivore with every cut imaginable. Visit old standbys like Don Julio’s or La Brigada, or try a newcomer like the popular La Carniceria. Bring on the night: Porteños know how to party. Nights out start with dinner no earlier than 10pm; clubs close as the sun rises. Popular spots include Frank’s, where you’ll need a password to get in, and Florería Atlántico, hidden under a flower shop. Learn to tango: Buenos Aires is the birthplace of tango. Its popularity has dwindled with younger generations, but older locals still frequent milongas or tango clubs. La Milonga de los Consagrados is a great place to watch them dance. For professional shows, classic venues like El Viejo Almacén and La Ventana won’t disappoint. If you want to join in, you can take classes at La Catedral. www.69-degrees.co.uk

Home to more than a third of Chile’s population, Santiago is a bustling metropolis. With a steady economy and two decades of political stability, the city has blossomed into one of Latin America’s best places to live. Drink a bottle or two: Chile’s unique geography and mild climate make it a vinicultural paradise. Just south of Santiago is the Maipo Valley, Chile’s oldest wine region. Here, you can find large wineries like Concha y Toro, as well as smaller producers like the acclaimed Antiyal vineyard. This region is most famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere wines. Get crafty: Artisanal crafts from throughout Chile can be found in Santiago’s markets. The Santa Lucía craft market is great for cheap, mass-produced souvenirs. For top quality crafts, visit Los Dominicos in the wealthy Las Condes district or the Patio Bellavista in the artsy Bellavista neighbourhood. Seek out alpaca wool garments and deep blue lapis lazuli jewellery. Discover history: The darkest period of Chile’s recent history was the almost 20-year military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Santiago’s Museum of Memory and Human Rights honours the stories and legacies of those tortured. For a lighter side to Chilean history, visit Pablo Neruda’s house in Santiago to learn more about the country’s most famous poet.

HAVANA (13 HOU, CUBA RS, 15 MINUTE S)

Colourful, musical and historical, Havana is a capital city caught between the old guard and the modern world. Havana now is already vastly different than Havana two years ago, before the U.S. eased restrictions on its citizens travelling and spending money there. Go now to experience it before it changes completely. Feel the beat: From son to salsa, from rumba to reggaeton, from timba to jazz to EDM – Havana pulses with music. Spanish, Caribbean and African influences merge to create a distinctly Cuban sound. The beachfront Jardines del 1830 is the place for live salsa, and you can catch top jazz acts at the intimate La Zorra y el Cuervo club. Appreciate the architecture: Havana Vieja, or Old Havana, is the best place to see the city’s architectural riches. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, this neighbourhood has hundreds of historic buildings, many of which have been carefully restored. Baroque, Neoclassical, Art Deco – they’re all here. Capitolio Nacional, Edificio Bacardí, and Palacio Cueto are all highlights. See change underway: Havana is changing fast. Its faded beauty remains – car buffs will marvel at the old models still in use, mass development has yet to begin – but perhaps not for long. As Cuba opens up, it’s the perfect place to see entrepreneurship at work. Dine at a paladar or private restaurant, stay at a casa particular or bed and breakfast, visit one of the latest shops or galleries; their owners are charting new territory.

MIAMI, FLORIDA (13 HOURS)

Geographically, Miami might not be Latin American, but it is culturally. Hispanic immigration has shaped this energetic city, from waves of Cubans in the 1960s to more recent immigration from countries like Colombia, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic. Hit the beach: No trip to Miami would be complete without a day or two at the beach. Miami’s easily accessible beaches are great for swimming, sunbathing, kite surfing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, people watching and more. South Beach is famous, Bal Harbour is glitzy, and residential spots like Surfside offer a family vibe. Slightly further afield are the beautiful beaches of Key Biscayne. Fun for the whole family: Children will love Miami. They can play on the beach all day, roller blade down the boardwalk, go biking and canoeing in Oleta River State Park, and catch starfish at Biscayne Nature Center. At night, mum and dad can go out on the town. Check out live music at the legendary club Hoy Como Ayer, or have a cocktail at a bar in one of South Beach’s iconic Art Deco buildings. Eat, eat, eat: Dining in Miami is like a culinary tour of Latin America. You can sample Peruvian ceviche, visit a Brazillian churrascaria for all-you-can-eat meat, or taste test both Colombian and Venezuelan arepas. For Cuban classics, head to Little Havana – breakfast at the historic Versailles bakery, a Cuban sandwich for lunch, and seafood at El Cristo for dinner.

Getting there: Iberia Express operates flights from Birmingham Airport to Madrid thrice weekly during the winter season. From here, you can connect onwards to destinations across Latin America with great transfer times. www.69-degrees.co.uk

czech mate:

THE CAPITAL OF BOHEMIA PRAGUE Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, has gone from the back packers’ Best Kept Secret to the stag and hen capital of the old eastern block. Or so we were lead to believe. With Czech Airlines now flying direct from Birmingham Airport, SIXTYNINE Degrees Jonathan Fraser decided to see if there was truth in the rumour that the stags had finally rutted off from the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia… People think I can be a little weird. Take Christmas a few years back for example. I was presented with a dream gift: a vintage and (admittedly) sinister ventriloquist’s dummy (since called Uncle David, don’t ask). He now sits in the corner of the living room, unnerving the more sensitive visitors to my home. It’s fair to say my tastes are left of centre, shall we say. So, killing time on the (actually very quick: 1hr 40mins!) flight from Birmingham to Prague I was thrilled to discover, when leafing through the guide book, a coach trip to a church www.69-degrees.co.uk

made entirely from skulls and bones. Just my bag and from that point forward, I knew that Prague and I were going to get on. Like most major European cities,

Prague is built either side of a large river, the Vltava, and the name of Prague actually originates from the Czech word for ford or river crossing. Settlements here date back to the 9th Century AD with

many of the city’s most spectacular architecture still standing from the 14th Century and reign of Charles IV. It’s this monarch that the main bridge connecting the two halves of the city is named after. The Charles Bridge deserves more than a passing comment: not only is it probably the most important and easiest-to-find tourist landmark in the city and with its myriad of craft stalls, beatnik musicians and gothic statues, it’s a must-see. Stroll across the Bridge to the North side and up the hill to the beautiful Prague Castle and gothic Saint Vitus Cathedral, which look menacingly over into the main old town on the opposite bank. Beware: it’s a steep walk, although well worth doing if you can, as the view is quite breathtaking (in both senses of the word). If all that sounds like too much legwork, stay on the South side and follow the bustling crowds through winding streets filled with tiny theatres, marionette shops

51 (they’re obsessed), restaurants and quirky coffee houses and bars which invariably lead you towards the main Old Town square and the medieval Astronomical clock whose moving sculptures perform the ‘Walk of The Apostles’ with each hour chime performed by a statue of the grim reaper himself, pulling on the bell pull. Touristy but fabulous!

Another way to see the city is by boat. The evening river cruise by Prague Boats offers spectacular views but we’d recommend the shorter two hour trip rather than the dining experience- get back earlier and enjoy a long dinner in the city!

Wherever you go in Prague, skeletons, devils and witches abound - everything is slightly gothic and ‘dark’, but when mentioning this to our guide from Eating Prague, who organise amazing food and drink trips around the city, any sinister interpretations of this nightmare figures were dispelled; “No, no, the witches are all for good luck. We have them in our kitchens to keep the bad spirits out.” Ok. Why bad spirits would lurk in a kitchen I’m not sure perhaps from the traditional Christmas Day Carp, kept in the bathtub during advent,

killed on Christmas Eve and eaten on the big day itself. Speaking of food (and we always are as my other half is food-obsessed), Cuisine and the Czech Republic go surprisingly hand in hand with a vast selection of restaurants for all budgets and tastes. We heartily recommend the Eating Prague tour – mentioned above- as a great way to sample menus, try traditional dishes and discover some great restaurants to visit later in your trip. Back on the streets and with daylight dimming, the gothic architecture of the city comes into its own: with cobbled streets lit by dim gas lamps and brooding statues. It’s all very the Brothers Grimm but not in the least foreboding. Add to this the pools of light spilling from the doorways and windows of the (many) small and quirky bars and you’ll be under its spell yet further. We were enchanted, that’s for sure. The Czech Republichas a fine reputation for the quality of its beers and you’ll find plenty to choose from in the city’s bars, some of which have their own micro breweries within. Beer is incredibly cheap to buy – the average per capita beer consumption is about 160 litres per year, meaning that Czechs drink more beer than anyone on the planet. If beer’s not your thing then why not try a little of ‘la fee verte’ or Absinthe, which is still made in the Czech Republic - perfect before a moonlit stroll amongst the streets, although it might make the statues come to life if you have too much!

FACT BOX: You can fly from Birmingham Airport to Prague with Czech Airlines up to 5 times weekly. Operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays on an Airbus A319 with a total of 144 seats – 12 business and 126 economy. @Nottingham Playhouse 16th September nottinghamplayhouse. co.uk This is a show about girls and guns. It’s a show that asks two people to take to the stage and play out a film script in front of you. Who’s ready for some audience participation? This play wondered what the difference might be in watching something on the big screen, and experiencing something live on stage. With girls and guns as plot devices, and the audiences that watch them, it’s time to challenge what Jean-Luc Godard said about films with girls and guns. “All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun.” Expect gun-twirlin’, play-actin’ and NancySinatra- dancin’.

The Haunting of Exham Priory @Guildhall Theatre (Derby) 19th October derbylive.co.uk

DRAMATIC NIGHTS AND THEATRICAL FRIGHTS ONLY AT THE REP THIS AUTUMN As summer fades the autumn blossoms for those who love theatre! Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s autumn season is crackling with a variety of new plays and iconic classics. One play that encompasses both qualities is the live stage version of the cult masterpiece The Exorcist, which makes its UK debut just in time for Halloween. This stage adaptation from the original novel by William Peter Blatty, that led to the legendary film which shocked a whole generation, is written by John Pielmeier and unleashed for the very first time in a uniquely theatrical experience from 21 October - 5 November 2016, at The REP.

Rumpus Theatre Company presents H P Lovecraft’s based on the classic gothic thriller, The Rats in The Walls, The Haunting of Exham Priory brings its spine tingling new play to Derby. Mr Delapore retires to England to restore his ancestral home, Exham Priory, which has lain ruined for over 300 years. But what tragedy overtook the ancient de la Poer family in a single night and why do the locals hate and fear the Priory so much… and what is there in the walls that so unsettles the Delapore cats? As Delapore and his young friend Captain Norrys uncover more and more of its past, Exham Priory reveals a truth more horrific than either man could possibly have imagined! www.69-degrees.co.uk

The REP certainly seems to be daring its audiences to try something scary over Halloween as running simultaneously with The Exorcist is the unnerving immersive experience, Séance. From 18-29 October, a small number of brave souls enter a pitch black shipping container outside The REP, and over the course of 15 terrifying minutes attempt to contact the spirit world. Using innovative 3D stereo sound and movement to evoke a true sense of terror, Séance transports participants to a dark realm where nothing is as it seems. Rest assured that Séance, the third production by Glen Neath and David Rosenberg, is purely for entertainment purposes and is strictly recommended for adults only. “Séance is Rosenberg and Neath’s best collaboration to date, a creepy and manipulative miniature which unsettles and makes you question not just your senses but what you actually believe” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian “Completely absorbing, spine-tingling” The Stage The Exorcist and Séance are recommended for ages 18 plus! NU:MUSIC

Mixing a number of genres together, such as Jazz, Scat, R’n’B, Rock and Soul, Call Me Unique brings a fresh new sound like no other. Layering each genre on top of each other as the tracks progress, the Birmingham artist adds a quirky twist to her music. Not only is her studio sound brilliant, her live performances are something incredible to say the least as well. When performing, she constantly includes her audience into her songs, even getting them to make up the lyrics to an improved song at the end of her sets. Consistently delivering her very best, the artist definitely lives up to her stage name as unique. An upcoming artist with no boundaries set in achieving her goals. It’s practically illegal to talk about live music in Leicester and not talk about By The Rivers. They leicester mix a blend of BY THE RIVER different genres together such as Soul, Afro Beat and Reggae to create a sound that is everything you’re looking for when you’re out on the scout for some feel-good music. These guys seem to have been at the tipping point of main stream success for so long now, will 2017 be their year? www.69-degrees.co.uk

CALL ME UNIQUE

THE MIDLANDS IS ALIVE WITH A WEALTH OF NEW MUSCIAL TALENT. SIXTYNINE DEGREE’S JESSICA HOWKINS EXPLORES THE SOUND OF OUR CITIES.

BIRMINGHAM

62

Whilst their sound is modern, Eva Plays Dead ooze with the essence of 70’s Rock ‘N’ Roll, giving them a unique edge in giving them the chance to keep rising to the top. The Derby band have ultimately gone from strength to strength and are a shining example to true attitude driven Rock music. With hard-hitting riffs and bellowing vocals, they are a band to be watched as they develop their style more with each track they release. Vocalist Tiggy Dee belts out mind-blowing vocals in sync with the melodies that the rest of the band produces for an exciting and fresh sound.

NoTTINGHAM GALLERY 47

Acoustic singer/songwriter screams out modern day Bob Dylan and Nick Cave, with superb guitar playing skills and endearing vocals. As his music has progressed, he has shown that he is not a one trick pony, crafting his sound even more and though his music might have a close connection to an older generation of artists, he’s made it sound new, exciting and bold.

NOTTINGHAM

Loud, hard and ready to rock is Leicester Alternative Rock band The World Can Wait. Mixing gut-punching riffs, pounding drums and strong vocals, they are a sweet blend of the line between Metal and Rock without overcomplicating anything. It plays nicely in their hands to get them fans from all over the shop; they are a band for everyone. Not even in adult-hood, they are beyond their years with talent and with their live persona. Onstage they are dynamic, and intriguing to say the least, they entice every person in the venue to watch them, by the end you’re pretty much their biggest fan. It takes some artists years to master their sound, more years than they are old but they have hit the nail on the head with the music that they want to put out, they’ve gone out and done it and now we’re left with something spectacular coming.

Eyre Llew is an emerging atmospheric threepiece band from Nottingham. While it is difficult to pin-point their sound into a set genre, they perfectly execute what they deliver. Imagine an acoustic XX crossed with Denmark’s Choir of Young Believers and infused with a little piece of Damien Rice and you’re about there. Ish. Eyre Llew definitely let their sound do the talking as opposed to focusing on their lyrical content; simple yet sophisticated it’s easy to become transfixed on what they are giving you, be it performance or studio sound. The Nottingham boys are definitely individual with their music, and there is a real sense of an artist approach about them.

BIRMINGHAM

Putting a modern twist on 60’s Pop and 50’s Rock and Roll is Max Stockin and Ryan Skidmore, The Fidgets. In just over two years, the jolly duo have crafted their sound and performances to near perfection. They have gone from busking to soon releasing their second EP, and with how catchy they are, they are meant to be on the ladder they are. The way they even perform resembles to artists such as Buddy Holly and Hank Marvin, they have such a nice persona about them, studio and live – it really comes through in their music, they are the good guys in Rock and Roll, but assured they won’t finish last! Even after one listen, you hit replay, you suddenly know the words and that uncontrollable urge to sing along comes in the mix. The Fidgets are the real Rock and Roll.

Some of the finer things in life are the hidden gems, Indie band The Vellas are just that. With a likeness to bands such as The Strokes and The Cribs, they are fun, wild and free. They throw out constant catchy riffs, with upbeat melodies and as Nigel Thornberry would say, absolutely smashing drums. Since recording their EP Run, they have been played on BBC Introducing East Midlands and have played some of the most iconic venues in the UK. The world needs to hear these happy chappies. Expect a jolly live atmosphere with lots of dancing… that’s if you haven’t started at home already, and one of the best performances you will see in the Indie music scene as of late. Get your groove on and have a wild ride with this emerging talent.

E S S E N T I A L D O W N LO A D S A nu season brings nu music and this autumn there’s a huge number of new releases from the likes of Bastille, Two Door Cinema Club, Shawn Mendes and a lot more. SIXTYNINE DEGREES’ Ben Walker and Jessica Howkins looks at what you should be downloading this autumn.

SHAWN MENDES, ILLUMINATE Following his debut album last year and hit singles, Stitches and Treat You Better, comes his second album Illuminate. According to Shawn the album will feature electric guitar on his tracks as well as all the right vibes. Mendes has been in the studio with experienced pop writer Scott Harris who has written songs for The Chain-Smokers and Jessie J, so we know it’s going to be good.

KAISER CHIEFS, STAY TOGETHER With any good album, you know what you’re going to get from listening to the first song. On Stay Together, Kaiser Chiefs’ new album, the first album-titled track represents buckets of hope and enthusiasm. In the worlds of vocalist Ricky, “As the record progresses, more and more mops will be rung most into the bucket.” The album combines the flush of new love with reflective and dreamlike lyrics from Ricky, making for a true pop album. Where most songs on the album differ from the true Kaiser Chiefs sound, tracks High Society and Why Do It To Me are musically closer to classic Kaiser Chiefs. ALUNA GEORGE, I REMEMBER Electronic duo Aluna George are back this autumn with their second studio album, I Remember. The duo www.69-degrees.co.uk

is made up of Aluna Francis who provides stunning vocals and George Reid who does the production and instrumentation. They’re shaking things up with their new album by pushing the boundaries of pop music and incorporating a much loved electro feel. BASTILLE, WILD WORLD With a focus on exploring the darker side to R&B and heavier guitar sounds comes Bastille’s highly anticipated album, Wild World. Prior to the release, the band teased fans with new music at festivals they played over summer. One song on the album, The Currents is based upon the madness and rise of Donald Trump and Nigel Farage; which coincides with the boys wanting to tackle issues that are apparent in the here and now lyrically throughout the album.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB, GAMESHOW Fans have been waiting four years for a new from by TDCC, and they won’t be disappointed by its release. The group are setting to change up the current music scene with an album that isn’t like other pop albums out there at the moment. On the album, lead singer Alex Trimble has said that the album is not ‘embracing the pop that’s going on now in a melodic or structural sense’. It’s very much an album that will be set away from the genre, offering pop lovers an alternative to what’s already out there. PASSENGER, YOUNG AS MORNING OLD AS THE SEA Mike Rosenberg, better known as Passenger is known to be intimate with his music folk with an indie-pop feel to it. For the eighth album however, he has brought in an incredible band to back him for a totally different recording process. It’s great to see that seven albums in already, there is still more to come!

CHARLIE'S ANGELS by KISS FM’s CHARLIE HEDGES

MAX CHAPMAN – GET FREAKY [ELROW] HERE IT ON SOUNDLCOUD

Ok so this month’s Charlie’s Angel is a bit of a double up. Firstly, we’ve got Max Chapman who is smashing it on the production front right now – seriously, where does he find the time to make all these tunes?! He’s got a knack for getting the right vocal locked down and threaded into a big, bassy track – when his promos come through, you know they’ll be big on the dancefloor and Get Freaky is no different. Secondly – shout out to Elrow! These guys have been smashing it on both the label and promotion side of things – their parties are like no other and their releases encapsulate the kind of vibe you can expect at any of their parties. If they’re in your town, make sure you check them. DJ ZINC – MAGIC One of dance music’s true innovators, Zinc has been on the scene for years (Super Sharp Shooter is 20 years old this year!) and never fails to deliver. Out now on SubSoul, Magic is definitely a far cry from the DnB days, or his ‘Crack House’ stuff, but just proves he can succeed in every genre. PATRICK TOPPING HOWK Since 2014’s ‘Forget’ cemented Patrick Topping as one of the country’s most in-demand producers, he has become a staple on festival line ups all over the world. His latest offering on Hot Creations is a definite late night club weapon: big bass, plenty of energy and a hint of vocal – I can see this being a closing party favourite in Ibiza.

TUFF LONDON – SENDING LOVE I I’m expecting Tuff London to blow up massively by the end of 2016. Their debut on Toolroom, ‘Sending Love’ hit the spot throughout Ibiza this summer and if you didn’t catch it then, you can now! Big pianos, basslines and more than just a dab of ‘catchy-as-you-like’ – it’s no wonder that Carl Cox, Danny Howard and plenty more were smashing this one. Keep an eye out for the guys, you heard it here first ;) MARK KNIGHT – COUGH N DROP

and time again, and all round top bloke. Cough n Drop is a step towards the classic melody-driven style of house that I love and best of all – this one is available as a free download. If you haven’t already, go grab yourself a copy! HANNAH WANTS – JUST (ILLYUS & BARRIENTOS REMIX) Illyus & Barrientos have been slowly building up a serious arsenal of big productions and are getting noticed by all the right people at the moment. Here, the Scottish duo take Hannah Wants’ ‘Just’ down a deeper, funkier route and pull it off perfectly. I’ve been playing this one all summer, expect to hear more of it through the rest of 2016 too!

Mark Knight is a bit of a legend really – label boss at Toolroom who crank out some of the biggest tunes time

LUKE LAUNCH Luke launched their brand new Birmingham store in the Bull Ring with a party on Friday night. Friends and family of the brand, along with celebrities, partied the night away, firstly at the new store, sited on Link Street. Coinciding with the brand’s logo, Lion Beer was flowing, as well as beverages from Thornbridge Brewery. After drinking the store dry, the party moved to The Vault, Newhall Place, where Arabella Drummond and her fire breathing girls put on a performance and Grandmaster Ash continued to entertain the crowd.

74 THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ISLA

the story. The amazing thing about Wilde’s words is that they are still relevant today.

Costume and Set Designer Isla Shaw returns to the Curve for their new production of The Importance of Being Earnest. SIXTYNINE degrees’ Ben Walker caught up with her to find out how she became involved in design and how visually, she is bringing the play to a modern audience. So, how did you first get into Costume and Set Design? I was actually looking at doing nursing believe it or not, but I decided to follow the artistic route and undergo a two-year costume construction course in Melbourne. I loved it, but I knew I really wanted to do design so I came over to England and studied at Wimbledon School of Art. I then went on to win the Linbury Prize and here I am 20 years later. When you first begin working on a new production, what is your www.69-degrees.co.uk

How does that reflect in the design and costumes? We’re mixing a very period space with very contemporary furniture and the shapes of the costumes have got an Edwardian shape to them. But at the same time they are very hedonistic Chelsea so you can relate to how the play was relevant then and is still relevant now. We have also incorporated mirrors in the production, which reflects the play itself looking at society.

approach to turning the words on the page into visual assets? I tend to read the play around six times, pulling out all the different aspects that we need to focus on. With The Importance of Being Earnest we wanted to create an Art Nouveau look with oriental elements, so I did some research and then put together the first model. Nikolai, the director, and I then would go back and forth, going through about ten different versions of the model before actually getting to the final thing. How is the play being brought to a modern audience? I think what is really exciting is that we’re not taking it out of the period, we’re not changing the text, we’re not specifically making it about the now, but we’re using what Wilde says through the text to us, to tell

So from which perspective will the audience see through; the reflections of the mirrors or the actual actors? I think that the audience will be very much a part of it, which is something that we were really interested in; it’s obviously going to be different wherever you’re sitting. What’s interesting is within that world it’s quite important to use colours in the costumes and be quite bold about the furniture and the aesthetics within that space. So what can audiences expect from this new production of Oscar Wilde’s play? I think people will get it in different ways, some will come and see the play for what it is and some people will hopefully be drawn in because of how relevant it is to today’s society. I hope that some people will come away and see the undertones of what we’ve talked about but I think in a way that it doesn’t really matter, some people will still get both things and some people will just enjoy it hopefully. The Importance of Being Earnest is at the Birmingham Rep until the 24th September and at Curve in Leicester. 6th to the 29th October For tickets visit birmingham-rep.co.uk or curveonline.co.uk
