The first dedicated hot yoga studio in Nottingham is set to open ahead of the festive season following a deal overseen by commercial property consultancy Innes England. Hotpod yoga, an intense but accessible form of yoga, will take over what is currently a commercial car park in Caste Gate in the city centre. The city studio will be the second for
Sarah Harrison who initially brought the brand to Nottinghamshire two years ago as a ‘pop-up’, but classes were so popular that she opened a permanent studio in West Bridgford. Sarah said: “Hotpod Yoga is ultra-accessible and is genuinely for everyone – you can try it without ever having stepped on a yoga mat before, which is why it is so popular. WINE TASTING
AN ITALIAN CHRISTMAS
Anyone who has travelled in Italy will be more than aware of the amazing range of wines the country has to offer, thanks, in part, to its rich tapestry of indigenous grape varieties. With that in mind, I have chosen two great wines that will add an Italian touch to your Christmas feasting. Firstly, from the Broglia family of Piemonte, is Gavi "La Meirana" 2015, £17.50. Made from 100% Cortese, this is a dry white with lovely acidity and is laden with lemon and apple fruit making it the ideal accompaniment to the roast turkey and trimmings. Heading south to the sunny island of Sicily and a brand new wine to me, Cos, Cerasuolo di Vittoria 2013, £24. Created by three university friends using a blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato, this distinct bottle is packed with instant aromas of black cherry, plum and raspberries alongside notes of tobacco. It shows great freshness and pairs well with white meats or, for the vegetarian diners, it works perfectly with Aubergine Parmingiana. Salute! BASTille Their Wild World
BASTILLE CLAIMED SUCCESS WITH THEIR DEBUT ALBUM BAD BLOOD SELLING FOUR MILLION COPIES AND SPAWNING MONSTER HITS SUCH AS FLAWS AND OF COURSE, POMPEII. AFTER TOURING ACROSS THE UK, AMERICA, AUSTRALIA AND PRETTY MUCH THE REST OF THE WORLD, BASTILLE ARE BACK WITH THEIR BRAND NEW ALBUM WILD WORLD WITH HIT SONGS INCLUDING GOOD GRIEF AND SEND THEM OFF PROVING THEY’RE NO FLASH IN THE MUSICAL PAN. NOW PREPARING FOR THEIR FIRST HEADLINE TOUR AROUND THE UK AND EUROPE, BASTILLE ARE BACK WITH THAT SAME DISTINCT VOCAL BUT A NEWLY DEVELOPED SOUND. SIXTYNINE DEGREE’S BEN WALKER, CAUGHT UP WITH WOODY FROM THE BAND AHEAD OF THEIR TOUR TO DISCUSS THEIR SUCCESS SO FAR, HOW THEY HAVE DEVELOPED SINCE BAD BLOOD AND ALREADY BEGINNING WORK ON THEIR THIRD STUDIO ALBUM... www.69-degrees.co.uk
22 So how did Bastille got started? I met Dan Smith around eight years ago where he was doing his own solo thing in his bedroom, creating songs, whereas myself and fellow band mate, Will were doing more left wing, weirder stuff. We then met Kyle in 2010 and we started to put together more accessible songs. We went away that summer, worked on a whole bunch of new songs and came back as Bastille. We borrowed one of our friend’s vans and started playing at various dive clubs around the UK, which built gradually from there. So then came your debut album, Bad Blood which was a huge success. Were you expecting it to hit as hard as it did? We didn’t expect it to happen. A few people at our label would say otherwise, but no one really saw it happening. We’ve been away for three years doing different kind of things, catching up with it around the world travelling around America, Australia and South East- Asia all over the world really. As we were travelling so much and touring it, unfortunately pushed back the arrival of Wild World a little bit. Are you at the point now that if you hear Pompeii on the radio do you groan? It was so big for so long. Not at all. People have asked me if I get bored of playing it but genuinely I don’t, I love it. That song pretty much changed our lives. The reaction it gets at festivals or gigs of our own you’ll never tire of that. Hearing your song on the radio though is a little bit weird; you don’t really know what to do. Do you turn it off, sing along?
bands work is that they divide up touring and recording, whereas we brought Mark our producer through on tour on and off from 2014. He and Dan were setting up writing rooms backstage of the touring buses working on new material, so we never really stopped. We put downloads together over the past couple of years and when it came to Dan getting it down together it was more, putting together all the ideas, rather than doing it from scratch. We put our mix tape out back in 2014, which scratched a bit
“IF BAD BLOOD WAS ABOUT GROWING UP IN THE WORLD, WILD WORLD IS ABOUT HOW YOU DEAL WITH THE WORLD AROUND YOU” of an itch for me as well. Did you all feel a big amount of pressure when it came to starting on your second album, after the huge success of Bad Blood?
Was it a relief to start creating again?
The only pressure we got was to stay true to the fan base we picked up from the first album. Obviously we had to move forward and do something new and progress it for ourselves really, which I think we’ve done. We are quite selfcritical of our own work so the only pressure is the one that we put on ourselves.
Well it’s a weird one as how some
The architecture behind the Bastille
www.69-degrees.co.uk
sound has developed since Bad Blood for example guitars are used throughout the album. How did you decide to take your sound in this direction? On the first album we got around half way through and realized that we hadn’t put in any guitar at all. It became a challenge for us, like how can we make an upbeat big indie album without a guitar? And it paid off. Will, our bass player is also a pretty sick guitarist too, so we started playing around with using guitar sounds from the end of 2013. Guitars are pretty standard for most bands and we took it as a bit of a challenge to leave it out first time round. Guitar doesn’t really play much a part of Wild World either. There’s more electronic and reggae sounds, ridiculous bombastic horn lines and hip hop as well. I guess where the first album only highlighted instruments a little bit, now we’re being a lot braver with our sound. There are so many complex elements to the Bastille sound, that it’s hard to put it into any set genre. How would you describe the sound as a collective? We intentionally stay genre-less if we can. I think especially these days with Spotify and Youtube, everyone’s trying to produce music, and people aren’t really restricted by genres as such. We’ve also enjoyed trying to confuse everyone but I think as far as our sound goes, as long as its Dan’s voice and lyrics on it it’ll sound Bastille. How would you sum up the album as a whole? We kind of describe it as if Bad Blood was about growing up in the world, now Wild World is how you deal with the world around you. Within that there is a lot of genre jumping as well, some songs that are simple, some deep and ones that tell imagined stories and also
23
real ones. It’s about reflecting how crazy and mad the world is at times and finding solace in other people, friendships and relationships. We never explain what our songs are about. We like hearing what people think the songs about. We’ll leave it to everyone’s imagination. You are heading out on your biggest headline tour yet. How’s the preparation going for that? It’s on going. We’ve got a week ‘til the tour starts and we’ve got production rehearsals in the lead up to that, but it’s all going well. We’re trying to make it more of a show and this Wild World communication theme running through the campaign is like our own little made up thing about Evil Corporations which helps push the album and engage fans. We’ve incorporated that into the live show. Without giving too much away, it’s going to be more of a show rather than your average gig set. Who have you got lined up as a support act?
We have a guy who’s called Rational who is a friend of ours, he’s got the most insane voice you’ve ever heard, really talented singer, writer and producer. We’ve also got another couple of friends of ours, a girl band called Jagara, another band called Childcare and a Chinese artist called Leah Dou; it’s going to be pretty varied. Over the summer you performed at a huge number of festivals- how do they compare to your own concerts? Which do you enjoy more? Playing at festivals is quite a nice respite from touring as by the time we’ve finished our own tour I really fancy that festival life, and you go out with other bands and meet new people. There’s also a chance to win over new fans that perhaps weren’t really into us before. It’s a great chance to almost convince them. I really can’t wait to play our own headline tour again though, as you can play certain songs that you couldn’t really get away with playing at a festival. We’re also more involved with the production
and that sort of thing. I haven’t got a preference as such though. Where can you see Bastille developing to? If I’m being completely honest I would love to keep doing this for another three or four albums, that’s as far as our ambitions really go. I’d love to eventually do Wembley, headline Glastonbury and play other big venues and festivals. Our actual kind of goal is to keep moving for as long as we can. I absolutely adore doing what I do. So will fans have to wait another three years for a third album? I really hope not. Dan’s already put a few ideas down for album three; he often vanishes for a bit, kind of hides in a corner or behind a bin in the street, singing into his phone. That’s all kind of started again, but I kind of think the plan is definitely not to wait three years this time. Bastille’s second album, Wild World is out now. @bastilledan

AFTER DARK Channel your inner Gothic beauty and bring a dark air of mystery to the festive party season. A catwalk favourite for the new season, blacks and greys struck a dramatic note at Dior, Elie Saab, Dsquared2 and Maxmara. We asked HELEN GOUGH, Beauty Manager at Harvey Nichols Birmingham, how to achieve this most striking of party trends.
2
3
From smoky eyes to jet black lips, Goth-inspired makeup was seen in force on the AW16 catwalks. Marc Jacobs opted for raven lipstick teamed with intense eye liner on the top and bottom lash lines, while Rodarte softened the look with deepest berry lips courtesy of NARS Audacious Lipstick in “Liv”. However, the runway highlight for me was at Elie Saab, where chic-rock smoky eyes were paired beautifully with muted lips. 4

Perfect for creating a sense of drama at this time of year, achieve this most dramatic of trends by keeping your foundation pale and your cheeks natural. Build the colour across your eyes by using light grey or white tones as a base then darker shades to add definition. Go for statement lashes and shimmering silver for glamorous impact. Pucker up with barely-there lip shades. Achieve a fuller pout with a deep berry shade or for the brave amongst us, plump for black lips that will certainly leave their mark under the mistletoe.

Transylvania’s unofficial capital is full of charm, culture and art. Cluj is one of Romania’s most visited cities and with its cool urban atmosphere it’s not hard to see why. From steampunk themed cafés to haunted forests there are so many reasons to add Cluj to your travel itinerary. Discover this animated city during the Transylvania international Film Festival or Transylvania Jazz Festival to soak up the bohemian atmosphere.

Absorb its history: Stop by the city’s historic centre, Piaţa Unirii, a large square overlooked by a tall church tower. From there, wander to the well-curated Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, where you can see the region’s past laid out in artefacts. The museum also has a good gift shop for souvenirs. The Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park features beautifully preserved buildings such as artisan houses and is a welcome retreat from the busy city. www.69-degrees.co.uk
Splash the Cash: Hosting two of the largest malls, Cluj is one of the best cities in Romania for shopping. Engage in some retail therapy by visiting lulius Mall where fun and dining are combined with premium shopping. For smaller shops, and sometimes a cheaper alternative, take a trip to Marasti Square. Appreciate the art: Cluj has a vibrant art scene. Start with the National Art Museum, housed in a baroque palace and filled with 19th and 20th century Romanian art. Then venture to Fabrica de Pensule, a paintbrush factory turned contemporary art hub. Attend an event or book a free tour of the gallery-cum-studio. Try Hungarian cuisine: With its long history as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Cluj’s population is roughly twenty per cent Hungarian. Get a taste of Hungary at popular spots like Café Bulgakov or Tamas Bistro, where you can try classic dishes like stuffed cabbage rolls and sip on pálinka, a strong fruit brandy, if you dare!

Rock out at a music festival: EDM fans shouldn’t miss Cluj’s three electronic music festivals held each year – oldstandby Delahoya, with a focus on local DJs; the established Electric Castle, where big names perform in a magnificent castle; and massive newbie Untold, with musical giants like David Guetta, Tiësto and Avicii. Escape the city pace: It’s an odd place for one of the city’s most scenic spots, but Hajongard Cemetery is a peaceful green space with several outdoor sculptures. Fortress Hill is another romantic spot, known for its panoramic views of the city. Relax with stunning views: The Central Park is a great choice if you want to escape the bustle of the city and have some amazing views, rent a rowboat and explore the small lake located in the middle of the park. Take a trip to the Botanical Gardens where you can admire many tropical plants, including huge Amazonian water lilies. Go to the theatre: Housed in a faded but elegant 19th century building, Cluj’s National Theatre presents classical and contemporary theatre and opera. If you’ve got children in tow, visit Puck Puppet Theatre for inventive, highly visual shows.

Cinephiles can check out feature length films at Transilvania International Film Festival and short films at ClujShorts. Chill in a café: With its large student population, Cluj is full of affordable, bohemian cafés. Try L’Atelier Café, where all the furniture is made of cardboard, the moody Casa Jazz or the hidden Yolka Bar, which serves the best coffee in town.

Horror fans should visit Sighişoara, birthplace of vicious Vlad the Impaler who inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. With a rich trade history, fairy tale cobblestone streets and a UNESCOprotected medieval citadel, it’s worth the two-and-ahalf-hour drive. Locals and tourists alike love the Apuseni Mountains, southwest of Cluj. Their unique geological formation means lots of caves and forested trails to explore. Expect to see foxes, wild goats and the occasional bear.

Visit a haunted forest: Nicknamed Romania’s ‘Bermuda Triangle’ because of reported paranormal activity, Hoia Forest is not somewhere you’d want to get lost overnight. If you’re brave enough to enter, you can do paintballing and archery.
Enigma Café is a kinetic steampunk-themed café in Cluj’s centre. The food doesn’t have a great reputation, but having a drink here is like being inside a mechanical machine – turning cogs, moving cranks and rotating wheels line the walls and ceiling. There’s even a robot riding a bicycle. Molotov Pub is situated in a medieval house with Bohemian decoration and specialises in the famous, personal, recipe of the ‘Molotov Cocktail’. Fly directly to Cluj from Birmingham with Blue Air operating thrice weekly services from 16th December.

Montigo Resort, Bali
PARADISE ISLAND: Lying just south of the equator and flanked by the Java Sea and Indian Ocean, Bali is without doubt one of the most famous islands of Indonesia. Often referred to as The Paradise Island due to its incredible natural beauty and tropical climate, SIXTYNINE Degrees Jonathan Fraser flew with Singapore Airlines to explore this Indonesian Idyll. One of the first things to hit you upon your arrival in Bali, despite the glorious humid heat, is the huge number of statues and temples around the island all of which are surrounded by small offerings and draped in cloths of varying colours. Despite only occupying an area of around 6000km, Bali is home to over 12000 temples. It therefore came as no surprise to discover that the name Bali actually comes from the Sanskrit word for offering.
Offering is inherent to the culture of Bali. Even today there will always be an offering made with even office workers bringing a flower to place on their computer to ensure a successful day’s work. Predominantly Hindu in religion, the Bali people make daily offerings of fruits, flour and incense for the good gods and cigarettes for the bad; it’s all about striking the right balance between good and evil and this is reflected in the cloths wrapped around the statues with black and white checks for balance and harmony, yellow for wealth and white for purity. Despite these traditions Bali is a bustling island of industry with markets on every corner selling fresh fruit and produce alongside craft shops and some pretty high end designer boutiques. The island’s roads are crammed full of interweaving scooters, many of them carrying entire families as well as their luggage. This choreographed chaos of last minute lane changes, u-turns and uncertainty as to rules of the road makes every road trip an adventure. It’s one we’d recommend not to take yourself though as unless you not only have eyes in the back of your head and cat like reflexes you’ll find it much safer and much more relaxing organising a driver through your hotel or ordering a taxi rather than a hire car.

VISIT RE YOU U S E K MA
Ubud Monkey Forest: Make sure you put plenty of time aside to visit the Ubud Monkey Forest. Home to dozens upon dozens of grey long tailed Macaque monkeys you can wander around the beautiful landscapes whilst monkeys swing from trees, walk by or sit beside. The monkeys are wild but are more than used to visitors and are friendly and welcoming – especially if you buy some bananas for them on the way in. On our visit there were lots of infant monkeys to see but don’t get too close to little ones as mum will be not far away watching. Call into restaurant Laka Leke for lunch after your visit, it’s just next door. Markets: Shopping in Bali is great value with approximately 17,000 Balinese Rupeya to the pound as we write this. There are markets everywhere in Bali and it’s the fruit and vegetable stalls offering a wealth of unexplored flavours to sample. From Dragon fruit to the snake like skinned Salak Bali fruit - a cross between an apple and a pineapple taste wise and quite dry- it’s always recommended only to sample the fruit you see peeled in front of you as that way you know it’s fresh. There are multiple handicraft districts across Bali with craftspeople specialising in delicate silverwork and gold jewellery as well as intricate carving. The Ubud Art Market offers a wide range of crafts and all incredibly well priced. This is definitely a place to haggle – ask the price and then offer half. You should find your price somewhere in between!
Potato Head Beach Club: If all of that exploring has left you wanting some down time, then the Potato Head Beach Club is the place to relax in style. The beach club is home to three restaurants, two bars, an infinity pool and a 500sq m sunbathing lawn that all look over the Indian Ocean. Instantly recognisable, the Beach Club sits like a shabby chic coliseum as its walls are made up mismatched and multicoloured 18th century shutters all salvaged from across the Indonesian archipelago. It’s also got one of the best sunset views in Bali and is host to a programme of parties, exhibitions and installations featuring both local and international DJ’s musicians and artists; we just missed Grace Jones performing there – gutted!
O STAY WHERE T Montigo Resorts, Seminyak: In a remarkable destination known for its verdant rice terraces, pulse-pounding surf and enchanting dances, lies a new haven — Montigo Resorts, Seminyak. Perfectly combining the tropical idyll with modern comforts in the heat of Bali’s cosmopolitan district, it offers 108 stylish and expansive guest rooms and suites. We were lucky enough to stay in one of their luxurious
and spacious Executive Suites with private garden and terrace, huge superking bed which was incredibly comfortable. The suite’s spacious bathroom features twin vanity with a generous sized tub as well as power shower to unwind under after a day of sightseeing. Make sure you sample the range of treatments at the Montigo Resorts’ in house spa during your visit. We enjoyed a wonderful hour long Balinese massage before relaxing in the garden pool and dining at Tyggo, the resorts’ stylish bar and restaurant which offers a wide range of Indonesian and western menu options. We’d thoroughly recommend sampling their Balinese Banquet. www. montigoresorts.com

47 FROM THE SMALL SCREEN TO THE BIG STAGE, CONSOLE TO CLUB, IF IT’S WORTH SEEING,HEARING OR DOING, THEN IT’S HERE... GREASE IS THE WORD! Curve’s hyyyyydromatic new production of Grease The Musical hits the stage from the 26th November. We headed over to Rydell High headquarters at Curve to chat to Sandy, Jessica Paul and Danny, Dex Lee to find out why they’re hopelessly devoted to the show. So tell us about the leading characters, Danny and Sandy. Dex: Danny is on the outside, Mr Cool, top of the class and finds everything very easy but inside he’s just as vulnerable as the rest of us. He is head strong and needs to be the alpha male and that’s his downfall as it almost makes him lose Sandy, the first girl he’s actually ever loved. Jess: Sandy is a middle class all American girl that’s recently moved to a new place and met a boy, Danny. For me Sandy can be very misjudged as being weak but I think she’s really strong; she doesn’t transform herself for anyone else but for her, she does it on her terms. Are there any similarities between yourself and the characters in Grease you are playing? Dex: There are many moments that I have read it and thought oh I’m in a way like him. For example he can be quite a jerk. Maybe that’s why I got cast, clearly Nikolai saw elements of that in me too! (laughs). Jess: I think I relate to her in a lot of ways as well because I can be quite nervous and self-conscious, but I also have that strength in me. It’s lovely to play a part I can really connect to. What is it do you think about Grease that makes it so appealing to audiences? Dex: I think that because it is such a timeless story and that it explores all the emotions that we can all relate to in our lives. It’s very reminiscent of a simpler time where your biggest worries were about whether someone likes you or getting your homework in on time. At the time it is set in there was massive cultural shift from the very prim and proper 50’s to the rock and roll of the 6o’s. Jess: All my family are coming to see it and I know my little sister is going to love it – I’m really excited for them to see it. What’s your favourite part of the show? Dex: Nikolai our Director has taken songs and parts of the original production from the 1970s and incorporated it into this piece. So I was like this is awesome as well as singing the classic Sandy, I’ve got some songs that people may not have heard before. It’s almost like Grease XL! Jess: I love the song, Hopelessly Devoted and to be able to sing that on the stage is going to be fantastic. Grease opens from 26th November and runs until 21st January. For tickets and further information visit www.curveonline.co.uk or call 0116 242 3595. www.69-degrees.co.uk

MR FUNNY: JASON MANNFORD With the Leicester Comedy Festival just around the corner, we chatted to the legend that is Jason Mannford as he prepares to returns to the city with a new panel show. How did you first get into comedy? I worked at a comedy club in Manchester at 16, one night a few acts failed to materialise and the desperate promoter asked if anyone fancied doing a bit! So I did! Who would you say are your comedic icons? Well Peter Kay was the first act I saw live who just blew me away. I thought he was fantastic. But growing up I loved Billy Connolly, Les Dawson and Tommy Cooper. I loved how my family would have tears in their eyes watching them. How do you come up with fresh content? I’ll let ya know when I do! Ha! No, I just listen to people, I read a lot, I have a radio show every Sunday on Absolute which forces me to come up with stuff. But listening is the best way. I’m never the centre of attention at parties, I’m always listening though! (That sounds creepier than I meant it to!) How would you describe the process of putting together a comedic show? I’d say for me it’s mainly 70% scripted, it has to be. But it’s very rarely in the same order. Then I like to mess about and chat and use new thoughts and see how it goes.

You’re returning to Leicester in February as part of Leicester Comedy Festival. How do you feel about performing at the festival? I’m really looking forward to it; I won the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Competition in 2000 so it’s always been a special place for me. I’m doing a panel show with some very funny comedians so it’ll be something both familiar and unfamiliar for the audience. Can you tell our readers what to expect from your show? It’s a show called Panel Beaters, and it’s a gag filled panel show that we hope will one day be on a screen near you! Panelbeaters with Jason Mannford will be at Just the Tonic at Hansom Hall on Sunday 12th February from 4.30pm and 8:30pm. Tickets are £15 and available from www.comedy-festival.co.uk

Upbeat, catchy and in tune with your feelgood side comes The Hivemind. Derby FolkPunk band absolutely grab your attention and get your feet tapping with no intention, it just happens and there’s no stopping it. Think Mumford & Sons and Frank Turner gone Lindisfarne, sunny seaside music, just unfortunately without the actual seaside. The fourpiece have a ton of potential under their belts, live and studio you can only hear the best and cheeriest of sounds creeping out of the cracks. The band is definitely unique to their own genre and has been able to capture the perfect essence of it, showcasing immense talent and excitement. They portray what we all really want, a band that we can sing and dance to, expect that and much more when these guys blow up a storm. THE HIVEMIND

Reggae with subtle, tasteful hints of Pop is Birmingham band KIOKO. The multicultural septuplet makes sweet and soulful music, the sort that gets your body grooving to the rhythm without even needing to try. They are a very classy sounding group, all with their own individual talents and blending them all nicely together. KIOKO have a very old school vibe about them, and in a live show that really does shine through. They’re fun to watch and get any venue moving, but they do it all whilst acting like absolute gentlemen, together they are smoother than Joey from Friends and fresher than the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. They are definitely a must watch, especially as they recently performed at Glastonbury on the Introducing stage, they’re going to make it big, be there to say you have seen them before you struggle to get tickets in the future! Elizabeth leicester Cornish is ELIZABETH CORNISH without a doubt at the front of ermeging midlands talent. This acoustic folk artist blends a fiery fusion of delicate, vulnerability wihilst capturing a passion that is hard to ignore. See Cornish live and you can expect to be captivated, your attention held as her fragile vocals create an idyllic landscape of the moment for your mind to get lost amidst.

Psychedelic Rock outfit Crosa Rosa bring the ‘60s back to 2016 with their hypnotic and trance-like music. Whilst they’re NoTTINGHAM not exactly like it CROSA ROSA was back in the day, they capture the vibe as well as they possibly could, taking you on a trip like no other. The band add in a little more Grunge and Indie to their sound as opposed to keeping it straight up Psychedelic , giving the genre a really nice feel to it. The Nottingham band is extremely talented and whilst they might be more niche than a lot of other artists today, they are worth checking out as they really do just chill you out. They’re electric and strange, but that is what makes them a worthwhile listen and a definite band to go and see live!

Spirited and light-hearted is The Hardy Band, putting a close-knit twist on Acoustic and Country music. The sextet each plays to one another’s strengths, with an admiring connection between each member. Studio-wise they’re wonderfully upbeat, sitting in your garden drinking a cider on a sunny day music, live on the other hand they become a group that stops the relaxation and brings on the party. It’s music to sing to and it’s music to dance to. In some cases, you’ll hear subtle hints of 1950’s Rock ‘N’ Roll, and in others you’ll hear perfect blends of the Blues. They’re a group for everyone, and whilst they’re incredibly talented, it’s their fun bubbly side that really makes them worthwhile. In a world so serious, be jolly, be one with The Hardy Band.
Creating perfect harmonies are Nottingham duo These Your Children. The two-piece work together to make sweet music, and as a pair they are electric. They bounce off of each other, playing to each other’s strengths leading to no questions asked about their rising success. After their open mic nights, they have proceeded to play Splendour Festival and sell out venues such as Bodega. Their acoustic driven music holds a lot of soul and passion behind them, showcasing the lovely connection between the duo. If you’re after a powerful and fiery pair of musicians who really push the limits on what they do on a relaxing day or in the tub, then without a doubt These Your Children are the two for you.

Gritty, distorted and everything sleazy makes Juice. The fantastic four-piece will fall on pleased ears to anyone who catches wind of them, either live or studio. Their contagious lyrics will latch into your mind, making it impossible to get out, not that you would want to have it out. They have defined their sound and made it theirs; they’ve made everything for themselves and in the process, for everyone else as well. When you get to see these guys perform live as well, you’ll want to put on your best dancing shoes and go wild, there’s nothing stopping you from falling in love with them, so just go ahead and let your feelings take over, there’s no denying you would want them to be on your most played playlists after hearing them. There’s been more and more talk of this band in the Birmingham music scene as of late, so catch them while you can and make sure you don’t end up regretting not giving them a chance.

PHATTFOX Drum and Bass, Reggae and Dubstep mash-up group PhattFoxx are climbing to ladder in being one of the best new upcoming acts from the Midlands. Fuelled by the bass drop and energetic performances, this Derby lot are ready to break the rules and drag you all in with them. They’re definitely upbeat, making anybody who listens dance and lose themselves, but they hold a level of attitude and slight aggression, they don’t let you have the best listening and live experience, they make you. PhattFoxx aren’t like any other Drum and Bass group, their blend of genres asserts that. They have the talent and they definitely have the persona to really craft who they are, and currently they are on the right road. E S S E N T I A L D O W N LO A D S Winter is the traditional time to drop nu albums just in time for Christmas gifting… This Winter there are nu releases from, Little Mix, DNCE, Bruno Mars and many more. SIXTYNINE DEGREES’ Jessica Howkins looks at what you should be popping in your stocking...
being one of the most innovative bands of our generation and if Night People is anything to go by, they will certainly be making their mark as one of the most important bands of the teens era. BEANS ON TOAST: A SPANNER IN THE WORKS Beans on Toast has always been a breath of fresh air in the music industry with his stunning DIY approach to his music. His new album A Spanner in the Works however sees him carry on in that direction but he has opened up to the use of technology all on a laptop at his mate’s house. He’s blunt and to the point, especially in the single 2016, but it’s what will really grab your attention and make you sit and think. DNCE: DNCE All set and ready to go with their self-titled debut album, DNCE are fresh from winning Best New Artist at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards and are on a mission to become your favourite new band. They have already made a splash with songs, Toothbrush and Cake by the Ocean over the summer and with main singer Joe Jonas on board their album is set to be a smash. THE WEEKND: STARBOY Broadening the R&B scene is The Weeknd. After his hit single Can’t Feel My Face from his second album, Beauty Behind the Madness, The Weeknd is here to offer more of his intriguing and brilliant sounds on Starboy. The album beholds a master-piece in the form of its title-track with a magnificent feature from Daft Punk, only showing the heights that the Canadian star is hitting.

METALLICA: HARDWIRED… Heavy metal titans Metallica are back and louder than ever! With their tenth studio album, Hardwired… To Self-Destruct out this winter you can expect some of the finest heavy music. Whilst the sounds of Metallica have changed throughout the years and perceptions on their music constantly differing, Hardwired is set to show just why the legendary four-piece are part of the Big Four. If you was a fan of Death Magnetic, guaranteed Hardwired is ultimately the album for you! YOU ME AT SIX: NIGHT PEOPLE Breaking boundaries for the fifth time this winter are British rockers You Me At Six with their brand spanking new album, Night People. The five-piece have always made a statement in
LITTLE MIX: GLORY DAYS Girlgroup Little Mix get risqué with their latest album, Glory Days! The four-piece found their fame on ITV’s X-Factor and rightly so. Glory Days will see Little Mix get down and dirty, showing the ultimate amount of girl power and that there is nothing wrong with a bit of sensuality. Little Mix have already released two tracks from their album, with their single Shout Out To My Ex debuting at number one in the charts back in October. BRUNO MARS: 24K MAGIC Claiming that 24K Magic is the best album he’s ever done is Bruno Mars himself when talking about his third studio album. It’s hard to believe that this is only the mega superstar’s third album but if the predecessors are anything to go by, you’ll be hitting funky town in no time!

WILL CLARKE & DJ FUNK: BOOTY PERCOLATIN Claude Vonstroke’s Dirtybird imprint has a habit of releasing some serious bass weapons, and Booty Percolatin is no different. Will Clarke and DJ Funk collab on what has fast become one of my go-to tracks – expect plenty of funk and bass, and if you’re not moving then it’s not loud enough. MICHAEL MANDAL & FORBES: REALLY LOVE Ilyus & Barrentos can do no wrong in my books – they’re killing it at the moment. The Glasegian duo have combined the hypnotic and iconic vocal sample with horn stabs to bring their remix of Really Love together as a main room monster in the way that only they can. Huge.

GARRETH MAHER - RIDE ON TIME Dubliner Garreth Maher has pulled out all the stops with his new heavyweight release on 3Beat – if you’ve not yet heard Ride On Time then where have you been hiding?! You’ll know the vocal already and you’ll feel like that piano was meant to roll alongside from the very start; all the big names are supporting this one and I’ve got a feeling that 3Beat are going to have another huge radio hit on their hands. I guarantee this isn’t the last you’ll hear from Garreth Maher, that’s for sure ;)
DAVE FOGG, BUMPY FOOL: GIVE YOURSELF You’ve probably already caught yourself singing along to Give Yourself on the dance floor, right? That vocal does it for me, then throw in a stripped back, weighty bassline and you’ve got a track which is guaranteed to go off. It’s one I’ve been throwing in all my sets recently and does the trick every time. MARC VEDO : ARABIAN EMPIRE I love tracks that have something a bit different about them and Marc Vedo’s new one on Armada Deep is exactly that. Arabian vibes, hoover effects and a big bouncing bassline make this a real stand out track. Marc Vedo has long been a master of the house

genre and this new one only cements that fact. Armada Deep are on point right now, even if I do say so myself! APEXAPE: JOY & PAIN A big pianoled, vocal track with a serious wobble in the sub bass department that was smashing terraces all summer, and will no doubt be doing likewise in the clubs over winter. Subsoul know a catchy release when they hear one – make sure this is on your playlist to get you through the dark mornings.

Celebrating almost a decade at the forefront of fashion in the Midlands, this year’s Midland Fashion Awards saw a record number of entrants competing for the crown of Young Designer of the Year, sponsored by Sixtynine Degrees magazine. Following a spectacular catwalk which showcased an impressive array of work from young designers, all of them from the midlands, the judges chose Leamington Spa’s Sophie Gordan as the winner of the prestigious Young Designer of the Year award. A recent graduate, Sophie Gordon wowed the judges with her simple designs, proving the time honoured design rule of less is more. The collection showcased at the awards was made up of designs from Sophie’s final year show for her three year BA course in Fashion Apparel Design at Coventry University which focused on reinventing wardrobe classics into timeless pieces.
and dark grey neoprene. In the future I would like to go on to create my own label, designing and making womenswear as this has always been my lifelong passion, in the meantime I hope to continue on furthering my design and manufacturing skills and to become a confident, skilful designer.” The awards were judged by industrial professionals including Jenny Eason, Founder of Midlands Fashion Awards. On the awards Jenny said, “The pool of fashion design talent here in the Midlands is exceptional. When we announced the 2016 awards earlier this year, we were inundated with hundreds of applications from designers, seeking to use MFA as a platform to become recognised.”
“My aim for the collection was to create considered simple designs that were functional and modern but which reflected reinvented wardrobe classics that are made to last beyond the season” said Sophie.
