DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

The contents of this report outline some of the topics discussed during the development workshop on the 13 December 2011. The document covers a range of the discussions we had and explores further potential for SUS to continue progressing in 2012. At this stage, the document is only for those who attended the workshop, where necessary, content can be amended and realigned should anything need to be made public.

Scotland, Place Station etc. We would also encourage you to write a post for the blog, and for now, we can upload and update this until we get a chance to walkthough how the Wordpress functions. The blueprint in this report will be an ongoing document which we will look to make available over a more accessible platform. Development of this will be iterative, and in line with progress made on the project.

At the end of the document Snook have added some preliminary actions that will be taken into the New Year. As something to ponder over the holidays, it would be good to come back to the project with ideas of highlighted opportunities to work in partnership with groups such as Creative 6

The awareness stage identifies what actions Start Up Street (SUS) users could have with the service to engage them prior to the join stage. Actions could include tangibles such as seeing posters, adverts etc but also include signing up for services, and linking with wider organisations across Stirling. This part of the SUS service is about network and bringing people together to support one another on an informal basis, supported by the structure of SUS.

At the join stage, the users are further engaged with the service offering. By becoming part of this offering, the users are able to access additional benefits in return. Benefits could include downloading advice, contact with mentors, having a personal PO Box. The join stage also includes becoming a more active user of SUS including volunteering to help run ventures, offering ideas or putting yourself forward to run a venture.

During the use of the service, there are an infinite amount of actions that the user could undertake. Below are examples of three ongoing applications of the SUS service. These need to be developed through prototyping the SUS scheme. We need to consider here both the needs of people running ventures and potential customers of SUS ventures.

SUS has the potential to grow. Outlined below are examples of how SUS could provide schemes to encourage customers to establish an ongoing relationship with venture owners. Focus on this stage will ensure the model can expand to other parts of the city and keep customers engaged.

A passive user is one who has either lost touch with the SUS service, or lost interest. It is vital that we retain these users capacity for development within SUS therefore advocacy and feedback loops as well as newsletters, emails etc are good ways of keeping in touch with our wider audience.

1. IDENTIFYING NEEDS

A section of the website that is designed to help the SUS user identify the various types of support available to them. This could come in the form of business support, IT, social media and marketing etc. Furthermore, as the enterprise grows and networks increase the offering available to SUS users would increase in size and efficiency. Another important step in 2012 for SUS will be to get a solid ground team established. This should include a board (or a similar structure)

of individuals who are willing to offer their advice and support to those who are engaging in starting an enterprise or venture.

2. BECOME A MENTOR

Outside of the role of the ground team it was also discussed that there should be an opportunity to ‘become a mentor’. It was undecided if this role would take the shape of a formal or informal relationship or both. The role of a mentor could be established between the parties involved themselves, or potentially SUS could set out a list of fields for which prospective mentors would complete, allowing the ground team to then make provisional matches with those who have identified themselves as needing help with

particular issues relating to their venture. In some cases the role of the mentor could be taken on informally as a “here and now” relationship, less structured around the practicalities by which SUS would set out in the website.

My venture is at a sticking point just now. I have buy in from local farmers, and the general public who have formally agreed that they would rent a stall during the event. My challenge lies with pulling together the necessary documents to take this idea to the final stage and in actually organising the event. I know the public would like to see this, but need help at the last stage. Ideally looking for someone to help in preparation for April, when I would like to hold the first market event. I can help!

Although I have buy in from the public, some shop owners in Stirling are opposed to the idea . They are worried it will loose them business. I need to get them on board.

3. SUS IDEAS

The idea portal would be a collection of concepts, ideas, and ventures proposed by members of the public who are looking for buy in from others. The cumulation of the various ideas would be categorised into the themes outlined in the initial SUS report. These could then be reviewed and expanded upon where necessary. The portal would provide a visual representation of local ideas that users have added to the SUS service to get feedback from

the general public and other figures. Alongside this, ideas would also have to be established as having true potential within the city of Stirling and be a viable and positive contribution to the already existing services. Similar to Kickstarter, the main aim of this particular platform is to secure funding and buy in from the public.

3.1 IDENTIFIED SUPPORT

Another feature discussed for ongoing development of the web platform was around the area of “identified support”. This section on the platform would provide prospective funders with a detailed insight into the challenges those who are engaging in ventures have came up against and will also outline what stage their venture is at. For example, whether they need extra support in terms of number of attendees to an upcoming event.

This should also lead to a clear dialogue on the website of ventures that are picking up momentum and may just need a cash injection to push the concept to the next stage. By outlining the progress of each venture in the pipeline in a clear and consistent manner, SUS and the business venturers put themselves in the best position for potential future investment in 2012 and going forward.

In collaboration with Creative Scotland & Stirling Council, we have two desks currently available from February until April 2012. The environment is a bustling, co-productive hub, therefore candidates should be willing share their expertise and collaborate with other in the environment.

4. VACANT SPACES

Feedback from workshops, email and Twitter has left SUS in the positive position where we know that transparency with what is and is not available in terms of the service offering will be imperative to maintaining the success of SUS. One of the most common questions across the board was about space availability and its potential uses. Having already outlined existing spaces and costings, we need to establish a resourceful way to continue this and ensure that if space

becomes available for use, this is documented and published. In conjunction with this, a forum where people could offer existing spaces for small term lets/ projects should also be explored. Are there shops within the arcade who are willing to have a week long “pop-up” venture inside and negotiate fees etc?

4.1 WHAT IS AVAILABLE

If a user with a venture idea, of existing product/service range is looking for space, and additional opportunity would be to work in a co-productive hub environment alongside others. We had mentioned that there are discussions taking place around the idea of having ‘hot-desking’ facilities available across a range of Stirling venues including the Old Town Jail.

5. UPCOMING EVENTS

The upcoming events section would be the main customer facing aspect of the SUS service as it goes forward. It would outline activities and events happening across the year, and will initially align with the six month forecasting document. Through time, the section should also begin to include themes (which will be worked on within the steering group) providing users with visual guidelines as to when an event is happening that they are interested in. Using

the medieval festival as an example, this would be branded or represent in a way that would allow users to quickly identify when the various preliminary events running up to this are taking place. (Workshops etc)

As SUS develops, and events or ventures develop, the website could also being to link in outside partners.

This could potentially provide SUS with additional revenue models to provide support. If we can get buy in from local businesses who are willing to offer any kind of support, financially or otherwise, “packages� could be created in return for investment.

By considering other revenue models that SUS could exploit, the enterprise puts itself in a position to build a larger ground team or steering group, and run additional events/ activities.

For example, a company willing to sponsor or mentor an individual could be promoted on the

POTENTIAL PARTNERS

For the purpose and development of SUS going forward into 2012, and to ensure its ongoing successes, securing partnerships with local businesses will provide the enterprise with the upmost chance of growing throughout the year. During the development workshop, it was discussed that for the proposed market event, we could collaborate with a range of Stirling groups across various sectors who could provide food, and entertainment throughout the day. Highlighted during the workshop were Norbord Stirling, who could potentially provide the raw resources needed to construct pop-up spaces for the event. In line with this, we also have a potential contact, Karen MacPherson who graduated from Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art. Her current exhibition at the Scottish Parliament “Design and Democracy” event highlights the use of standard size flat pack wood such as the type that could be provided by Norbord, and involving someone like Karen in the project will also sit well with the Year of Creative Scotland 2012. “We are in a unique and unprecedented position. The proximity, profile, vision and energy of London 2012 and Glasgow 2014, reinforced within a Year of Creative Scotland, enables us to profile and celebrate the key contribution that a strong, vibrant cultural offer brings to our lives and how we are perceived nationally and

internationally. We are encouraging the cultural sector to respond with ambition and exploit the opportunities available in the next three years. “ Year of Creative Scotland in 2012 will celebrate and promote Scotland’s cultural and creative vibrancy, shine a spotlight on our creative assets, provide a test-bed for new initiatives and a launch platform for activity to support Year of Homecoming in 2014. It will provide a chance to work together to promote Scotland’s festivals, our great cities, to get Scotland dancing and to shine a spotlight on the contribution that people and places play in making us a leading creative nation.” Karen could provide initial practical advice on setting up an individual space. With regards to food and drink, it was mentioned that we could engage in conversations with Sistema Scotland to provide a various forms of entertainment throughout the course of the event. Other groups such as Eden Court should also be approached. Catering is also going to be imperative to the success of the event, and linking up with groups such as Raploch could provide an avenue from which to engage others in helping, sharing or learning during the event.
