Welcome A very warm welcome to the Knavesmire, where our seven-race card is headed by “black type” action courtesy of the Listed Sky Bet Ganton Stakes, a contest won recently by popular Yorkshire trained thoroughbreds such as Top Notch Tonto and Sovereign Debt, perhaps Azano or Space Traveller will continue the trend for either of the David O’Meara or Richard Fahey camps. The excitement continues in the Winner’s Enclosure after our third race, as the successful horse in a unique race in York’s calendar - the SKF Rous Seller – comes under the hammer of Tim Kent, the Goffs UK auctioneer. Enjoy the spectacle but be mindful that a poorly timed scratch of the nose could see you returning home with a new four-legged friend! Today’s prize fund of over £130,000 can only be achieved through your support and that of our sponsors. Many thanks for your attendance and to Sky Bet, SKF, Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Churchill Tyres, Eventmasters, European Breeders Fund and Safe And Sound Homes (SASH) a local charity. York Racecourse is proud to be working with the European Breeders’ Fund in staging the 3.30pm race, a valuable contest for fillies over six furlong, as part of being a committed advocate of Racing with Pride. York Racecourse is determined to ensure racing on the Knavesmire is welcoming and inclusive for all. Our senior management team have developed, and committed to, our York Racecourse Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and have all undertaken Diversity training modules and have sought to ensure all departments and areas are as diverse, inclusive and welcoming as possible. Among our existing team, we have members of the LGBTQ+ community who we are proud to have as colleagues. We are actively working within racing, alongside the Diversity in Racing Steering Group to ensure our diverse workforce can be confident, comfortable and be part of a fully inclusive community. It is important to us that all our participants and fans feel included and valued. I hope you that you are able to come racing at York again soon. We are all awaiting the Prime Ministers’ announcement, expected next week, to see how the summer might unfold. We very much hope that we can welcome you back in July and August for our summer showpiece race meetings. Tomorrow we are proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Macmillan Charity Raceday – the oldest and biggest charity event in British racing which has raised over £8.8m for Macmillan Cancer Support. You can join in the online auction www.macmillanauction.com or by following the link from our website with bids closing by 5pm Saturday, more details on page 32. For now, I wish you an enjoyable and successful day. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

CARING FOR THE HORSES Looking after the horses is a priority at York so every raceday there is a team of equine vets on call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over. Given the warm forecast, extra checks will be in place for the horses, including the special "water misting fans" to cool the runners after a race. If there is an incident, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. If a horse loses a shoe then there is a farrier at every start and in the pre parade ring, to put it right.
RETAIL THERAPY Feel in need of some retail therapy? Why not visit one of our retail partners. Blue Rider Gallery - equestrian art specialists. (opposite the Princess Mary bar) Conversation Pieces - equestrian prints. (by entrance to Gimcrack Stand)
DISABLED RACEGOERS Facilities such as disabled toilets and viewing platforms for racing and concert viewing are clearly signed. Our raceday stewards will be pleased to offer directions and assistance. The Racecourse Office Team will also be happy to help and can provide an access guide and map. Rachel Crabtree is a senior member of the team with special responsibility in this area.
FREE WIFI 1) Search and select yorkracecourse 2) Enter your own email address and home postcode to register 3) You’ll be directed to our home page featuring our partners for today, then just surf away. Given the nature of any WiFi network there will be peaks of demand by both time and location - some websites will not be available.
SHUTTLE BUS A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.
TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shop on the Melrose Stand Lawn offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 11

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.

RACE DESCRIPTION Underway with a race limited to two-year-old horses so in their first season, meaning level weights for runners of the same sex. Notice that Circoloco and Lincoln Dream carry 5lbs less, this is the allowance given to fillies due to their relative strength at this stage in their development. All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. The Tipsters Board at the end of the Melrose Stand might offer some clues.
2019’S RACE Winner: HURSTWOOD Trainer: Tim Easterby Jockey: David Allan Age/Weight: 2-9-5 Runners: 8 SP: 7/2 Breaking well and making all, the Tim Easterby-trained colt broke his maiden tag in good style, holding off Asmund inside the final furlong.

KNAVESMIRE TIP The newcomers are very hard to gauge so it may be best to stick with experience, and if JADHLAAN takes to this quicker surface, then he should prove too good for the rest. Third on debut and second last time out, beaten less than a length each time, he is a very worthy favourite. Lincoln Dream will do better if she settles but with more runners here than on her debut she should get the chance to find some cover, while Brazen Best looked speedy at Beverley before fading late on and could surprise a few.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti As the founding owner of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 season at the magnificent York Racecourse on the Knavesmire. The past year has thrown many challenges at the racing world globally and I salute those behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to keep our sport alive throughout those dark days. It is great to be back approaching some form of normality here at York. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York racecourse team by putting our name to three Group 2 races in 2021: the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout this new season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

RACE DESCRIPTION A handicap, such races are designed for close competition so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated horse, in this case Howzer Black has that gift today and so will carry the most weight. So pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Regal Mirage has been running consistently well and is likely to be in the shake-up again, while Civil Law must enter calculations following his facile victory on the Tapeta at Newcastle. However, a chance is taken on handicap debutant DESERT EMPEROR, who represents a stable in red-hot form at present. The Camelot gelding wasn’t beaten far on his first couple of starts over this trip and just looked a little outpaced over an extended 1m at Wolverhampton last time. Back up in distance, off a fair opening mark of 77, he could run a big race.

RACE DESCRIPTION This selling stakes aims to showcase horses which are for sale; imagine a car dealer having a race of all the motors available on the forecourt. Immediately after the race the winner is offered for sale by an auction. Bidding is conducted by Tim Kent of Goffs and is to start at the minimum price of £6,000 and any other horse in the race can be claimed for £15,000. If the horse has won particularly well then you may see the original owner trying to buy it back, hopefully for less than the prize money it has just collected! Blame the racecard tipster for your betting by seeking advice from red bi plane against their selections.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A competitive renewal of this contest but the vote goes to TAREEKH, who has improved with every start to date and he got off the mark in maiden over 6f at Thirsk eight days ago. If he can find further improvement then the son of Dandy Man will be hard to beat. Black Hill Storm is a proven winner at this level and he is an obvious threat to the selection. Others to consider are All In Aladdin, Charlie De Rio and Stardust Gambler.

FACES BEHIND THE RACES • What is your current role at York Racecourse? General Manager of Stableside
• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse? 15 years, starting as summer help in the Bookings Team
• Outside the racedays at York, what do you do the rest of the year?
At Stableside we welcome hotel guests when we are not looking after stable staff, we can’t wait till next Monday, being 17th May, so there is a never a quiet day for us! From school children exploring the wonders of the city, to leisure guests looking for that proper Yorkshire welcome. You will usually find me up and down our corridors ensuring everything is just right for our next visitor!
• At the end of the raceday at York Racecourse, tell us what makes it a good one?
Probably under 30,000 steps and where everyone leaves happy, having sampled what I think are the best racing staff facilities in the country, eager for their next visit and at least seven having a winner in the back of their horse box!
• How did you become involved in racing at York?
My family have always been involved, from my Grandfather being an on-course bookmaker and my Dad following in his footsteps. Racing was always going to be my path, I started at the Racecourse as work experience and never left!
• What local tip would you give a visitor to the city of York
Come and stay with us at Stableside! We have some beautifully renovated rooms courtesy of our very talented facilities team, complete with a floor laid by the Chairman and walls painted by the Clerk. We believe we offer the best value stay in York.

FAY WAUDBY-GREEN • Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire
The Gimcrack Restaurant offers a really fantastic 3 course meal or later in the day afternoon tea in a beautiful traditional setting that screams “proper” York Racecourse to me whilst not ignoring my Yorkshire roots I think it offers “proper” good value as well!
• Thinking of racing personalities, past and present, what question would you most like to ask them? How do you pick a future winner?
• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working?
Juddmonte International Day (18th August this year) which you can’t beat for the absolutely high-class racing, nothing gives me a bigger thrill then seeing some of my favourite horses throughout the year battling it out in the Group One feature, which regularly appears in the top 10 races in the world.
Mecca’s Angel
• What has been your favourite winning performance at York?
This is really difficult; I think Mecca’s Angel winning her first Coolmore Nunthorpe, so giving Paul Mulrennan his first taste of Group 1 glory really sticks in my memory. She reeled in Wesley Ward’s American Raider, Acapulco, and was a real star that day.
• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?
Absolutely this has to be Sea the Stars, I used to have a picture of him in my bedroom! For me he was the complete racehorse, he won over different distances, in different countries and took on all comers and I don’t think they ever truly got to the bottom of him, he always pulled out more. Some people say horses have a look when they know they’re the best and when I saw Sea the Stars in the Parade Ring before his Juddmonte victory he had that look.
• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?
These questions are getting harder! I’m going to go for a “girl power” table here, Katie Walsh, Clare Balding, Henrietta Knight, Denise Coates and York Racecourse’s very own Jane Richardson, what she’s forgotten about York Racecourse is more than I’ll ever know, so we need to make the most of her before her retirement!
• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?
When Marcus caught Brian the Snail, who had managed to get loose in the Stable Yard. Brian didn’t live up to his name, he was extremely fast! 41

KNAVESMIRE TIP Gale Force Maya failed to land a blow in Listed company last weekend, but her form before that marks her out as one to consider here. Paul Midgely saddles the very consistent Mid Winster and Ballintoy Harbour, who was a place behind the in-form Noorban (second), when third at Redcar recently. That trio all make some appeal, but preference is for MEJTHAAM, who opened her account with a game success in novice company at Wolverhampton and could be tough to stop following up now joining the handicap ranks.

KNAVESMIRE TIP There shouldn’t be a lot between Duke Of Hazard and SPACE TRAVELLER and they ought to fight out the finish. The first named as 1lb in hand according to the official ratings but is proving hard to win with while the selection has had his issues with just the one start last season when sixth in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. He failed to sparkle on his return at Doncaster but cheekpieces are added today, and his overall form gives him the edge. Afaak is the only course and distance winner in the field and could be the one for third spot.

6th Race 4.35 The Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Stakes About Seven Furlongs (1,400 metres)
Distance: Race Type: Rating: Prize Money: Age: Stalls:
7f Handicap 71-90 £12,500 4+ Farside
See page 60 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION A return to handicap conditions and to freshen the available pool, it is open to those who are aged four-years-old and over, down the seven furlong distance. “Offer a chance for everyone” is a good maxim for those planning races and in this contest the upper rating of 90 means that though these ones are still quality performers, they won’t have their spotlight stolen by a real superstar. If a horse is ridden by an apprentice then it is given an allowance in weight which varies depending on the record of the particular rider, notice how Kaeso shoulders 3lb less weight as his partner is apprentice Faye McManoman.
2019’S RACE Winner: SHAWAAMEKH Trainer: Declan Carroll Jockey: David Nolan Age/Weight: 5-9-1 Runners: 19 SP: 5/1F A double on the day for trainer Declan Carroll was brought up by Shawaamekh, who drifted right towards the stands-side rail, but did enough to take the victory by just under a length.

KNAVESMIRE TIP A huge field where luck in running may come in to play but there is a lot to like about the chances of LOLA SHOWGIRL who won a shade cosily over course ad distance last month on her first start in over eight months. If she handles the quicker ground she has every chance of doubling up here, though expect a bold effort from Gabrial The Wire who is coming down the handicap to a mark he can win from and he may yet prove to be her biggest danger. Northernpowerhouse could also get involved and looked ready to win again after a solid third at Doncaster on his seasonal return and may also run in to a place.

7th Race 5.05 The SASH Charity Stakes Apprentice Handicap
1m 4f Handicap 61-80 £11,200 4+ Centre
One Mile About Four Furlongs (2,400 metres) See page 60 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Another testing handicap, open only to horses aged four-years-old and over and intended for those whose mark is between 61-80. This time the real difference is between the jockeys as it is a race for apprentices. Connections can claim a reduction in the weight allocated to their mount depending on their rider’s past success. So, choose whether to back a runner like Sudona and so benefit from the relative experience of Sean Kirrane or take the weight allowed for an upcoming rider such as William Pyle who partners Dubai Instinct. Pick the winner and bask in the glory until it all starts again in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support at 2pm tomorrow.

KNAVESMIRE TIP GREENGAGE has been in cracking form all year, winning four times and placing on the two other occasions, and showed no signs of slowing down when scoring comfortably over 1m5f at Ayr latest. Despite having to shoulder a 5lb penalty for that success, she very much looks the one to beat in this contest. Sudona should love this ground and is unlikely to be far away, while Ghadbbaan also merits consideration off his light weight.
