Pavers Shoes prides itself on its family values. Founded by Catherine Paver in 1971, Cathy and her late husband Michael Paver were familiar faces around the racecourses of Yorkshire in the 1990’s, sharing a keen passion for racing and owning their own racehorses. They passed their enthusiasm on to their children and grandchildren, a number of whom are in attendance today. The family established the Pavers Foundation to honour Cathy’s compassionate spirit, and Pavers and the Charitable Foundation are particularly proud to be supporting today’s feature race The Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint. The company shares its 50th anniversary year in 2021 with Macmillan’s 50th year of the feature race which makes today particularly poignant. What’s more, by sponsoring this year’s race, the Foundation has achieved a major milestone by giving £1million to good causes. Macmillan holds a special place in all the family’s hearts, and they wish everyone the best of luck on this special day here at York Racecourse.
Welcome to the Macmillan Charity Raceday I’m so pleased that you are able to join us for what will be our 50th Macmillan Charity Raceday. Whether you are a regular supporter or joining us for the first time, I hope you have a marvellous day. Although many of our plans for this anniversary have been affected, I’m so proud of the enormous impact that this event has made to support those in need over the years. Since our first event in 1971, we have raised over £9 million: of which 90% has gone to Macmillan Cancer Support to improve the lives of people living with cancer. The remaining 10% goes to a number of other charities such as York Against Cancer, St Leonard’s Hospice, Racing Welfare and the Injured Jockeys Fund. This tremendous impact wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of York Racecourse, other sponsors, box holders, racing professionals such as Jim McGrath, auction donors and the countless racegoers, who over the years have been such a wonderful help to Macmillan. During the past year, fundraising has been extremely difficult and right now there are an estimated 179,000 people in Yorkshire living with cancer who face continued uncertainty around their health. I would like to thank each and every one of you who support Macmillan through this event. Every penny that you give this year is vital to ensure that this fantastic cause can continue to support those who need our help.
The Countess of Halifax President of Macmillan Cancer Support

CHARITY AuTIoN DN’T MISS IT
Closes Saturday 12 June 5pm
Right now, there are 179,000 people currently living with cancer in Yorkshire alone. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic they might have had potentially life-saving treatment cancelled or postponed. We want to be there for every person diagnosed with cancer that needs our support, but we can only do that with your help. To help raise money to fund our services, Macmillan are holding an auction with some great prizes available. From UK getaways to fashion and sports, there is something for everyone! Head over to www.macmillanauction.com or scan the QR code to place your bids.

Welcome A very warm welcome to York for Macmillan Charity Raceday for a great day of sporting action in support of a wonderful charity. I hope you have an enjoyable and successful day on Britain’s oldest and biggest charity raceday which has raised £8.8m over the last 50 years. Our thanks for the tremendous support of racegoers, sponsors, supporters and the hard work and generosity of so many people past and present. We thank you all and everyone can take a huge pride in helping people whose lives are affected by cancer. We send our utmost appreciation and thanks to all at Macmillan Cancer Support who dedicate themselves to helping patients and their families cope with this terrible disease. The Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint, is run in memory of the inspirational shoe retailer, Cathy Paver, who died in 2017, the Foundation being her practical legacy. One of Britain’s richest sprint handicaps for three-year-olds, the roll of honour includes top sprinters such as Cadeaux Genereux, Sheikh Albadou or Twilight Son. It may be that some of today’s field return for our flagship sprint contest, the Group One Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe on Friday 20 August. The black type contest of the afternoon is the Listed Sky Bet Race to the Ebor Grand Cup; which has drawn a quality, if select field. The winner earns a guaranteed berth in the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 21 August, see p31 to find out how. The Queen Mother’s Cup is one of the UK’s richest contest for Lady Amateur Riders. The field includes previous winning riders Emily Easterby and Serena Brotherton. The jockeys themselves do not take any monetary reward so instead they receive their weight in fabulous Ayala Rosé champagne; do watch out for this special weighing - in ceremony in the winner’s enclosure. Our thanks to Cathy Swift and Ayala Champagne for their support of this unique prize. The late Reg Griffin was the driving force behind this charity day for the some thirty eight years and it is a privilege and honour for York to stage the Reg Griffin Appreciation EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes in his honour. There is the chance to bid for one of the fantastic lots in the Macmillan auction (see www.macmillanauction.com or the opposite page). For our regulars, fret not, The Ernest Cooper Macmillan Ride of their Lives, is to be staged on Friday 24 September to allow time for the riders to both get fit and raise funds. York Racecourse is proud to support @RacingWithPride month and to affirm that Racing is everyone’s sport. I hope you that you are able to come racing at York again soon. We are all awaiting the Prime Ministers’ announcement, expected next week, to see how the summer might unfold. We very much hope that we can welcome you back in July and August for our summer showpiece race meetings. William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course: York Racecourse

CARING FOR THE HORSES Looking after the horses is a priority at York so every raceday there is a team of equine vets on call. Much of their work is done before racing actually starts, being on hand to check horses over. Given the warm forecast, extra checks will be in place for the horses, including the special "water misting fans" to cool the runners after a race. If there is an incident, prompt attention to horse and rider is provided by the modern ambulances. Like most courses York will often use green screens during an incident, these offer privacy to those involved and their presence does not necessarily signify bad news. If a horse loses a shoe then there is a farrier at every start and in the pre parade ring, to put it right.
RETAIL THERAPY Feel in need of some retail therapy? Why not visit one of our retail partners. Blue Rider Gallery - equestrian art specialists. (opposite the Princess Mary bar) Conversation Pieces - equestrian prints. (by entrance to Gimcrack Stand)
DISABLED RACEGOERS Facilities such as disabled toilets and viewing platforms for racing and concert viewing are clearly signed. Our raceday stewards will be pleased to offer directions and assistance. The Racecourse Office Team will also be happy to help and can provide an access guide and map. Rachel Crabtree is a senior member of the team with special responsibility in this area.
LIVE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS FOOTBALL The giant screen above the Roberto Lawn will show uninterrupted coverage of Wales v Switzerland (K.O. 2pm)
FREE WIFI 1) Search and select yorkracecourse 2) Enter your own email address and home postcode to register 3) You’ll be directed to our home page featuring our partners for today, then just surf away. Given the nature of any WiFi network there will be peaks of demand by both time and location - some websites will not be available.
SHUTTLE BUS A limited shuttle bus service to York station will collect from Knavesmire Road, at the northern end of the racecourse. The service is provided by a commercial operator. A return service operates on raceday mornings.
TAXI/PRIVATE HIRE PICK-UP POINT There is a taxi pick up point at the Northern end of the racecourse adjacent to Campleshon Road. Private Hire vehicles will meet pre-booked customers, also at the Northern End.
WHERE CAN I PLACE A BET
The tote will be pleased to take your bet at their many windows or look out for a passing courier. Remember to try the small stake-big payout bets such as the Jackpot, Placepot or Trifecta. The William Hill Betting Shop on the Melrose Stand Lawn offers a full SP service, so bets on racing and the wider sporting world. The colour of the main betting ring returns, set in front of the Knavesmire Stand, take on the challenge. Contactless payment is available for all the above options. Good luck.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES York Racecourse always strives to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However, an incident may occur which is beyond our control. We have employed professionally-trained and experienced stewards. In the event of a situation which requires a partial or full evacuation of the stands, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will usher you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and quietly. If we are unable to re-occupy the stands, you may be invited to return to your car or coach. Departure from car and coach parks will be under the direction of the Police. The foregoing is a precautionary tale. 13

Official BHA Ratings The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. Racing Post Standard Times is an independent assessment based on how long it should take a 90 rated horse to win on Good To Firm ground at York. Race tactics, rail movements, and wind direction are amongst the many factors to also affect the time for each specific race. Non-runner Ground - The Trainer states the ground is not suitable for this horse, the official going has changed since the time of declaration. Vet - The Trainer states the horse is subject to a Veterinary Certificate. Self Certificate - The trainer has advised the authorities that the horse is not able to race today.
You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

One Mile About Four Furlongs (2,400 metres) See page 60 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION The first race is a competitive handicap for lady amateur riders. Such races are designed for close competition so the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights. The best will be the highest rated horse. Flymetothestars here and so will carry more weight. This is a prestigious race for these amateur riders so the winner will receive her weight in Ayala champagne. Perhaps follow one of the former winners such as Emily Easterby.
2019’S RACE Winner: ARCTIC FOX Trainer: Richard Fahey Jockey: Mrs Carol Bartley Age/Weight: 3-9-4 Runners: 13 SP: 5/1 After riding Nanton to victory in the race in 2013, Carol Bartley partnered her second winner of the Queen Mother’s Cup in the shape of Arctic Fox who hit the front three furlongs out and was never caught.

KNAVESMIRE TIP In an open race the marginal preference is for NICHOLAS T, who was not beaten far when finishing third over this trip at Hamilton two starts ago. His most recent effort can easily be forgiven, as he met with plenty of trouble in running, and the nine-year-old should not be underestimated. Carlos Felix is a player based on his second-placed finish at Chester a couple of starts ago, while Byron Flyer should also be noted. Flymetothestars is arguably the most interesting runner in this field, given that he is 7lb lower than when finishing second in the 2017 Ebor, but the 1371-day layoff is an obvious concern.

See page 60 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION Still, a handicap, so seeking equal competition amongst horses aged three and above. While the last race was for good horses rated up to 95, this race is for those a rated up to 105, and like for cricketers a score of over 100 denotes a top performer. Those closer to the top will carry more weight; Ostilio, carrying the heaviest burden today. So pit your wits against the handicapper – if you need some help look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, look how Broken Spear is one that carries both.

KNAVESMIRE TIP While of few of these candidates have questions to answer over this trip, DAZZLING DAN has been going from strength to strength since being upped to this distance and should be able to build on an encouraging third at Newmarket last month. The Pam Sly-trained five-year-old gets the vote off an unchanged mark, although, the unexposed Gifted Ruler has only been seen five times in his career and demands serious interest returning from a lengthy break. Queen’s Sargent has been competing on a testing surface and the return to drier conditions means he merits consideration now 3lb higher than his last winning mark.

A message from Mr Malih L Al Basti As the founding owner of Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2021 season at the magnificent York Racecourse on the Knavesmire. The past year has thrown many challenges at the racing world globally and I salute those behind the scenes who have worked tirelessly to keep our sport alive throughout those dark days. It is great to be back approaching some form of normality here at York. And so it is with great pride that Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, can continue to support The Chairman, Committee and every member of the York racecourse team by putting our name to three Group 2 races in 2021: the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton Stakes, the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Dante Stakes and the Gr2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes. We wish all owners, trainers, jockeys and stable staff the very best of luck today and throughout this new season on The Knavesmire. Malih L Al Basti Owner and Founder Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai.

WHAT’S NEW IN THE WORLD OF EBOR? This season sees the latest staging of the famous race as part of a five-year partnership with Leeds-based Sky Bet. York Racecourse and its longstanding partner are committed to both cherishing and yet developing the track’s most famous race. Today sees the final instalment of the 2020/21 series entitled the “Race To The Ebor” which features four high-class staying contests, including a brand new Irish race which debuted in the series this year. The four races nominated for the “Race To The Ebor” are: Sky Bet Melrose Sky Bet Jorvik Sky Bet Stakes Sky Bet Grand Cup Handicap (3YO only) Handicap (4YO+) (Handicap, 4YO+) (Listed, 4YO+) York - 1m 6f Saturday 22 August 2020
York - 1m 4f Wednesday 12 May 2021
The Curragh - 1m 6f Thursday 3 June 2021
York - 1m 6f Saturday 12 June 2021
The winners of the four races above will be guaranteed a start position in the Sky Bet Ebor of 2021 provided they are entered and confirmed in the normal way. In a further boost to connections, if these horses run in the Sky Bet Ebor 2021 and fail to finish in the top eight places, they will have their entry fee to the race (worth £5,000) refunded, the top eight receive £5,000 or more in prize money. By virtue of winning last season’s Sky Bet Melrose, the Andrew Baldingtrained Coltrane grabbed the first ‘golden ticket’, while the Sky Bet Jorvik went the way of the impressive Ilaraab for the William Haggas team. In the inaugural running of the Irish ‘qualifier’, Shamroe justified the favourite’s price when winning at The Curragh earlier this month, Karl Thornton’s charge could be a fancy for the big one in August. In the event that any of the “Race To The Ebor” winners were set to carry the lowest weight in the Sky Bet Ebor, that horse’s weight would be raised to the equivalent of the lowest-weighted horse that was set to run through the established entry process. To complement this initiative York Racecourse invested in Britain’s largest set of starting stalls, able to accommodate 22 runners, an increase of two participants on the 2018 configuration and used for the very first time in 2019 as Mustajeer scooped the pot in the Sky Bet Ebor.

Remember the winner gets a berth in the Sky Bet Ebor on Saturday 22 August, so take notes. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the statistics at the beginning of this race.

KNAVESMIRE TIP Ranch Hand won a pair of decent staying races on the all-weather earlier in the year and was far from disgraced in a Sandown Group 3 last time, but he has to give 7lb to MAKAWEE, who is rated just 3lb lower. David O’Meara’s mare was staying on when third over 1m6f in a Group 3 here last time and could take advantage of her fillies’ allowance in this. Red Verdon hasn’t been at his best this year, while Roberto Escobarr is untried over this trip but might just be better for it after a fair fifth on his reappearance at Ascot.

FACES BEHIND THE RACES • What is your current role at York Racecourse? Racing Manager and Raceday Clerk of the Course
• How many years have you worked at York Racecourse? This will be my 11th season.
• What is your raceday role?
My role entails ensuring the smooth running of all areas in relation to the horses and jockeys, including the ground and layout of the track, stables, integrity areas, etc and co-ordinating the doctors, ambulances and vets.
I walk the course with William and Adrian at 6am, and then mornings are busy, checking all areas and dealing with questions from trainers/ racing staff etc especially during a multi-day meeting. 2 hours before the first race, I liaise with the BHA Stewards and Field Force, and ensure that we comply with the BHA Rules and General Instructions before racing starts.
• Outside the racedays at York, what do you do the rest of the year?
During the summer, we are all busy preparing for the next race meeting, as the meetings come thick and fast from May to October. The winter months are spent on development projects, and maintenance and refurbishment of areas such as the stable yard, the Weighing Room and Pre Parade Ring etc.
It is also spent on organising the following season’s Macmillan Charity Race Riders, ensuring full and qualified staff provision for the next season in terms of medical and veterinary cover, organising training and refresher days for our ground staff and horseman’s team, etc. There are also annual Groundsman and Clerk’s seminars to attend, which help to keep everyone up to date with current good practice and any new innovations.
• At the end of the raceday, tell us what makes it a good one?
Quality racing with no incidents, good finishes and that great Knavesmire atmosphere!
• How did you become involved in racing at York?
I first worked at York more than 30 years ago on the Information Team (we didn’t wear pink back then) on racedays. I was also lucky enough to ride on the course in the Queen Mothers Cup a few times.
• What local tip would you give a visitor to the city of York
Arrive by train and allow yourself sufficient time to stroll to the course and get a feel for the city, so allowing the atmosphere to build up. A glass of champagne on the lawn overlooking the Parade Ring before racing starts, will set up your day perfectly!
Stableside 36
ANTHEA LEIGH • Give us a hidden Gem of the Knavesmire
The Stable Yard over behind the back straight. There are four beautiful brick built yards, and on even the busiest raceday on racecourse side, the stable yard is a haven for horses and racing staff. Guests at Stableside, on non racedays, may get a look into one of the yards and see for themselves.
• Thinking of racing personalities, past and present, what question would you most like to ask them? I would ask Sir Henry Cecil about his training of fillies. He was a master with them. I would also ask if he always knew that Frankel would turn out to be arguably, the best of all time.
• Which York Raceday would you attend if you were not working?
Today, so Thursday of the Dante Festival, featuring the Al Basti Equiworld Dante Stakes itself. Widely acknowledged to be the best Derby Trial, it is fantastic to then watch the winner progress through the season.
• What has been your favourite winning performance at York? Frankel, of course! But another less obvious would be Diminuendo winning the Darley Yorkshire Oaks in 1988 for the iconic pair Steve Cauthen and Sir Henry Cecil.
Diminuendo
Frankel
• Who is your favourite racehorse, past or present?
My favourite flat horse would again have to be Frankel, closely followed by Enable. It is a privilege of my job that I get to see these wonderful world class horses at close quarters.
• If you could share a table in the Voltigeur with 5 people from racing over the years who would they be?
How difficult is this! I will keep it to Flat Racing and Yorkshire (we’ll grant Paul residence status) Tim Richards, Nigel Tinkler, the much-missed Tom O’Ryan, William Haggas and Paul Hanagan. What a lot of amazing stories there would be, and what a lot to learn! It would be good fun too, if you weren’t the barman!
• What is the funniest, printable thing that you have seen/heard on the racecourse?
Russ Garritty urging son Jack Garritty to hurry up so they could beat the traffic, when Jack was still on a stretcher in the Jockeys Medical Room with a broken collar bone!

Six Furlongs (1,200 metres) See page 60 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION The richest race today is a sprint handicap. The best on past performance will be the highest rated horse and so will carry more weight than the lowest rated opponent; the Richard Fahey-trained Internationaldream and the Tim Easterby-trained Showalong rank two points apart so the former carries 2lbs more weight than the latter. This race is only open to horses aged three. If you are looking for a tip then perhaps follow the racecourse tipster, Baron Ferdinand, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP The only top weight to win this in the last 10 years went on to Group 2 glory, so that shows the magnitude of the task for Irish raider Aikido, who returned to action with a second win on the all-weather at Dundalk in April. Showalong won a novice stakes here last year and travelled beautifully to score at Chester last time, but he may prefer more give in the ground so JADWAL gets the vote. Charles Hills’ gelding had First Folio (fifth), Bickerstaffe (ninth), Seven Brothers (11th) and Barney’s Bay (13th) behind when second at Newmarket last time and could be good enough to defy a 7lb higher mark. Novice stakes winners Skyrunner and Dark Shift also warrant attention.

Reg Griffin (1929-2008) Founder and organiser of Charity Day 1971-2008 Born in Liverpool on Valentine’s Day in 1929, the son of a railway guard, Reg left school seemingly destined for a career as a surveyor. However, having been captivated by walking the Grand National course aged just five, racing was always his first love and, after National Service, he began to convert dreams into reality. Griffin joined Phil Bull at Timeform in 1957, following spells as secretary/assistant to Jack Fawcus at Middleham and Arthur Budgett at Whatcombe. Ten years later, he became managing director and, thirty-two years on from that, chairman, a position he retained until formally retiring in November, 2007. In 1970, Noel Nettleship, then Doncaster racecourse manager, forwarded a letter to Phil Bull from a Mrs Irene Hunt, regional organiser for the National Society for Cancer Relief. Mrs Hunt, based in Sheffield, was aware that a charity race meeting had been organised at Ascot and was hoping someone might do the same in the North. Bull passed the letter to Reg- and, as the old saying goes, what followed became history. Reg agreed to help, provided no one interfered. Having persuaded the Jockey Club to grant a fixture to a commercial firm for the first time (at Doncaster in ‘71), he then secured sponsorship totalling £60,000 for a sevenrace card. At the time, this was the richest one-day meeting ever staged in Britain and the first at which every event was broadcast live on national radio. It also received extensive television coverage on ITV, so today the wheel comes full circle. Come the day, the Queen, making her first appearance at Town Moor for fifteen years, watched her colt Charlton, named in honour of the World Cup winning football brothers, Bobby and Jack, land the featured William Hill Gold Trophy. The following year, the Jockey Club refused to help, telling Reg that he must find an existing programme. Thanks to the late Charles Halifax (father of the current Earl, Ernie), the meeting was moved to a Saturday at York in mid-June, where it has remained ever since. Due to a whole host of loyal supporters, many of whom are present today, the race day, which has so far raised over £7.5million, million, continues. Today's 58th £9 race, run since 2011 in Reg's honour, was actually won in 2010 by a horse named after him - the name, Sir Reginald, what else!

KNAVESMIRE TIP BOND POWER was running on well late in the day when second to the well-regarded El Caballo on debut and could be the answer now stepping up in trip. Claim The Stars and Bosh both represent powerful stables and made encouraging starts recently, with Bin Hayyan also catching the eye at Haydock, despite refusing to settle for a lot of that contest. Richard Fahey has won this three times since 2012 and that brings his newcomer Grifter into calculations, while 140,000gns buy Gis A Sub appears the pick of Kevin Ryan’s two debutants.

KNAVESMIRE TIP In a wide-open contest the vote goes to LA TRINIDAD, who was far from disgraced when finishing sixth in the Hambleton Handicap over a mile here last month. The four-year-old should go very well now eased in grade and off a 2lb lower mark. The progressive Lion Tower has won both of his starts this year and he should not be underestimated in his bid for a hat-trick, while Little Jo is another recent winner to consider. Those looking for an each-way alternative should consider Delgrey Boy and Defence Treaty.

KNAVESMIRE TIP In an open affair marginal preference is for SOUL SEEKER, who has not been beaten far on his last three outings in testing conditions. The return to drier ground and the step up in trip earns the David O’Meara-trained four-year-old the vote off a workable mark. Devil’s Angel has been progressing on the Tapeta of Newcastle and demands respect if transferring that form to the turf. Prince Of Bel Lir hit the ground running on his reappearance when winning at Nottingham last month and he completes the shortlist with Tom Marquand taking the ride.
