This looked to be a competitve running of the Kauto Star, with Grade 1winning hurdler Black Op edging favouritism for Tom George having finished runner-up in a Grade 2 novice chase at Newbury last time. Also prominent in the betting were the lightly-raced Master Tommytucker, who had been successful at Kempton Park on his seasonal reappearance for Paul Nicholls, while the Colin Tizzardtrained Slate House had won two from three to start off his campaign. Slate House had the most experience over fences of the trio and put that to good use, travelling powerfully into contention before doing enough to hold off the challenge of Black Op.
Colin Tizzard and Robbie Power team up with The Big Breakaway as they look to make it back-to-back wins in the Grade 1. The last pair to do so were David Pipe and Tom Scudamore (Grand Crus and Dynaste) in 2011/12

KEY CONTENDERS IF THE CAP FITS A Grade 1 winner over hurdles last year, he has taken well to fences in two attempts so far. He made a winning debut over the bigger obstacles at Ffos Las in October and followed that up with a runner-up effort at Listed level at Sandown last month.
THE BIG BREAKAWAY Held in high regard by Colin Tizzard, he had no problem making a successful chasing debut with a ten-length victory at Cheltenham in November. He was second back in trip last time but remains one to follow over fences.
SHAN BLUE Shan Blue has looked a natural in his two starts over fences to date, winning both races this season at Wetherby in style by over ten lengths. He is a smart chasing prospect for the Skelton team.

Epatante confirmed herself as being a leading Champion Hurdle contender with a stylish five-length success, quickening impressively to go clear of the Evan Williams-trained Silver Streak.
In 2019/20 Epatante became the fifth horse to have won the Christmas Hurdle before going on to land the Champion Hurdle (Lanzarote, Dawn Run, Kribensis and Faugheen)

SILVER STREAK Enjoys himself here at Kempton where he is dual winner at Listed level. The better the ground the better his chances are, but he finished five lengths behing Epatante in last year's Christmas Hurdle so has work to do to reverse the form this time around.
EPATANTE The mare arrived here last year on the back of a Listed win at Newbury, but she gained a breakthrough Grade 1 success in the Christmas Hurdle and has not looked back since, winning twice more at the highest level including the Champion Hurdle. KING GEORGE VI CHASE BIG RACE TRENDS AGE With horses aged seven or eight having landed six of the last ten renewals, these seem the group to focus on. In this year’s field they have seven of the nine representatives. Only the great pair of Kauto Star and Cue Card have defied this trend when older, so it does look best to side with that age group - a negative for Waiting Patiently and Black Op.
KEY RACES The Betfair Chase, run at Haydock at the end of November has been the stand-out trial for this race in recent years. Six of the last ten winners of the race had run in Haydock’s three-mile Grade 1 contest and the race is well-represented again in 2020. The 2019 King George winner Clan des Obeaux made a promising seasonal reappearance to finish runner-up in the Betfair, while Lostintranslation was sent off as favourite for the race but ran below-par when trying to defend his Haydock crown. Interestingly, no other runner in this year’s King George took part in the Betfair Chase.
TRAINER TRENDS Paul Nicholls has a strong record in the King George VI Chase in recent years, winning five of the last ten renewals, including the magnificent Kauto Star and superb Silviniaco Conti. See More Business also won the race in 1997 and 1999, before Clan des Obeaux became another dual winner last year - giving the trainer a record total of eleven wins overall. He has Clan des Obeaux and Cyrname in the line-up on Boxing Day in a bid to make it an amazing twelfth victory in the race. There have only been three winning trainers of the King George in the last ten years as Nicky Henderson has won the race three times and Colin Tizzard has two successes to his name in the past decade. The pair saddle the second and third from the 2020 Gold Cup this weekend as Henderson added Santini to the race earlier in the week, while Tizzard is represented by Lostintranslation.
FORM & CLASS When trying to narrow down the shortlist in Grade 1 events, it often pays to side with proven quality and this race is no different with all but two of the last ten winners having previously been successful at Grade 1 level over fences. Santini, Real Steel and Saint Calvados have all won Grade 2 chases, but will be bidding for that breakthrough success at the highest level in the King George. Recent form is also an important factor to consider because whilst only five of the last ten winners won on their most recent start, only one had finished outside of the first three which was Clan des Obeaux ahead of his first success here in 2018. This shows that it can be difficult to bounce back from a below-par effort to win the King George, which is a negative against the chances of Frodon and Black Op. Proven stamina over 3m or further is something that most of the last 15 winners have had on their resumé. Whilst our chase course may have a reputation as a speed course, horses still need to have the required stamina so beware of any doubtful stayers in this year’s field - perhaps Saint Calvados and Real Steel have the most question marks against their names in this regard.
TRENDS SUMMARY POSITIVES • • • •
NEGATIVES

Outside the first-two in the betting Without a Grade 1 success Aged nine or above Finished outside the first-three last time
BETTING It usually pays to stick with the fancied runners in the King George VI Chase with seven of the last ten winners having come from the first two in the betting. Four of those were sent off as favourite, which is good news for supporters of the Paul Nicholl’s pair of Clan des Obeaux and Cyrname who have been vying for favouritism for the race. They are followed in the betting by Santini and Lostintranslation, who will be hoping to return to the form that they showed in the Gold Cup.
CONCLUSION With all things considered, CLAN DES OBEAUX looks to hold huge claims of making it a third consecutive win in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase. He was a wide-margin twenty-one length winner of the Grade 1 last year and as an eight-year-old this time around he still has plenty more to offer. He made a very promising start to the current season when runner-up in the Betfair Chase at Haydock on ground that would not have been ideal for him, travelling in his customary strong style before only losing out to course specialist Bristol de Mai. Paul Nicholls will have CLAN DES OBEAUX primed for another big run on Boxing Day and he could take some stopping back here at Kempton. His main danger could be his stablemate Cyrname, who was actually sent off as favourite for last year’s King George but could not quite manage to live up to expectations. His defeat of Altior at Ascot last November had saw him cement his status as the highest-rated horse in Britain and, although things did not go to plan in his following two races, he showed signs that he was coming back to his best with a smooth victory in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby in October. It looks to be another fascinating clash between Paul Nicholls’ pair in the 2020 renewal of the King George.

Clan des Obeaux arrived at Kempton Park bidding to become another dual winner of the prestigious race for Paul Nicholls, but it was his stablemate Cyrname who was considered as the main danger having defeated Altior at Ascot when last seen in November. It was an eagerly-anticipated contest with Betfair Chase winner Lostintranslation chasing the Triple Crown and Irish challenger Footpad representing Willie Mullins. However, it was Clan des Obeaux who had too much for his rivals, travelling strongly and jumping boldy throughout before powering away after the second-last for a widemargin success.
Clan des Obeaux will be aiming to enhance Paul Nicholls’ fantastic record in the King George and become the first three-time winner of the race since the magnificent Kauto Star

KEY CONTENDERS LOSTINTRANSLATION Lostintranslation won last year’s Betfair Chase but then failed to show his true running in the King George. However, if returning to the form of his third in the Gold Cup then he would be a major player here for Colin Tizzard.
CYRNAME Sent off as favourite for last year’s King George, he finished second here albeit no match for his stablemate Clan des Obeaux. He was an impressive winner of the Charlie Hall on his seasonal return though, so holds high hopes of going one better this time around.
CLAN DES OBEAUX An emphatic winner of the King George last year as he made it back-to-back victories in the Grade 1. He looks set for another bold bid in 2020 as Paul Nicholls has strong claims of making it an incredible 12 wins in the race.

PLAY SMARTER
CYRNAME proved himself over 3m when strolling home in the Charlie Hall and is taken to the turn the tables on last year’s winner Clan des Obeaux in what could be yet another Paul Nicholls domination of this contest. There are doubts surrounding a few so there’s possibly some each-way value in Waiting Patiently, who is top-class on his day and has a good record when fresh.

A highly competitive finale. RIGGS had plenty in hand when making his second handicap start a winning one at Uttoxeter last month so could perhaps prove the answer. A market move for the returning Nicky Henderson mare Barbados Blue would make her a probable threat. The Paul Nicholls pair Ecco and Switch Hitter are also on the shortlist along with Coeur de Lion.
