HER INDOORS made a really encouraging start in this sphere in a Listed contest at Aintree earlier this month and will surely improve. Siroco Jo and Heross du Seuil are talented recruits from France for top 2 yards and typically make plenty of appeal. Honneur d’Ajonc showed plenty first time up at Exeter and will be interesting if taking his chance (also entered at Chepstow).

Global Citizen had some strong form to his name over hurdles in 2019, winning a Grade 2 at Haydock before competing in the Champion Hurdle. However, he had failed to get involved on his chase debut in October which saw him sent off as one of the outsiders for the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase. The seven-year-old showed muchimproved form though on his second start over fences, jumping boldy under aggressive tactics as he made all to gain another Grade 2 success by a length and a half.
So many winners of this famous race have gone on to top level glory: Cyrname, Altior, Dodging Bullets, Simonsig, Sprinter Sacre and Riverside Theatre to name but a few have all gone on to win Grade 1 races either as a novice or in subsequent seasons.

GUMBALL A Listed winner over hurdles last season, Gumball comfortably got off the mark over fences at the second-time of asking. He was running a big race in a Cheltenham Grade 2 in November before falling at the second-last.

Cases can be made for all 10 of these, but EMMPRESSIVE LADY is the one who stands out on account of potential. A 5lb rise for her Sandown handicap debut success looks very fair indeed and this step up in trip may help unlock further improvement. DESERT ORCHID THE LIFE STORY
With four King George VI Chase wins to his name at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, Desert Orchid was an integral part of the festive programme at the racecourse and as much a part of Christmas as tinsel, holly and mistletoe. It was, and still is, a career worth paying tribute to. In addition to his four King George wins, he was also successful in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Irish Grand National, the Whitbread Gold Cup, the Victor Chandler Chase and the Tingle Creek, which amazingly came in the same season as his Cheltenham Gold Cup victory. In truth, Desert Orchid was unique - on the day the inaugural Desert Orchid Steeple Chase was held, David Elsworth and Richard Burridge, his trainer and principal owner, were present as part of a memorial service to unveil a plaque next to the life-size statue of Dessie that stands near the parade ring. In total, the ‘people’s champion’ won 34 of his 71 starts, finished runner-up a further seven times and was third on three occasions. He collected £654,066 in prize-money in his 10 seasons on the racetrack before retiring, after which he fulfilled frequent public appearances thanks to his ‘celebrity’ status. Desert Orchid seemed to save his best for Kempton Park with seven victories from 13 starts. Four of the seven wins came in the King George and, as much a showman off the track as he was on it, even in retirement still made the annual Boxing Day trip to Kempton to parade to the packed stands. The Kempton Park story of Dessie, who was trained by Elsworth throughout his career, began with a fall in a novices’ hurdle and ended with a fall when attempting to win the King George for a fifth time. In between, it was all about success. Ironically, his first win here came on Boxing Day in a novices’ hurdle in 1983 – 11 months after his debut fall – before finishing third on his seasonal debut in October 1984 and then runner-up to Browne’s Gazette in the Christmas Hurdle on another festive visit to the course. His only visit of the 1985-86 season saw him fall in a hurdle race on the first start of his campaign, but jockey Simon Sherwood led Dessie to his biggest success here when landing the first of four King George’s in 1986. A chase victory in November 1987 was then followed by second place in the Boxing Day feature behind Nupsala. The second King George arrived in 1988 with Sherwood again on board, before Richard Dunwoody took over the following season, which brought a third King George as well as the Racing Post Chase here in February 1990. By the end of that year, an amazing fourth King George was in the bag. When the 12-year-old fell attempting to win a fifth King George in 1991, connections decided it was time to bring the curtain down on a legend’s career. The horse, clever as ever, had made the decision for his owners – it was time for a life as a celebrity.

An open-looking renewal of the Desert Orchid Chase saw Capeland sent off as favourite as he was stepped-up in class following a comfortable win in a major Ascot handicap. However, he was taking on regular Graded performer Sceau Royal and the 2019 Arkle winner Duc des Genievres, while Bun Doran arrived on the back of a good effort in a competitive handicap at Newbury last time out. It was Bun Doran who came out on top with a career-best performance to land the Grade 2 contest, quickening nicely after the secondlast and then he was not for catching.
Altior will be bidding to become the third dual-winner of the Desert Orchid Chase after Voy Por Ustedes (2006 & 2007) and Special Tiara (2014 & 2016)

Fifth Race
It could be worth chancing MELLOW BEN, who looked back to his best when third of 16 to Cap du Nord at Newbury and is 7lb better off with that rival now. Royale Pagaille looked a different proposition when making a winning return on his third start for this yard at Haydock and is another to consider.

PLAY SMARTER
There’s definitely a bigger performance in HANG IN THERE, who travelled with purpose until his stamina was stretched at Newbury a month ago. Eased a further 2lb and back over 2m, he could well be the answer to this tricky puzzle, with the Dan Skelton-trained pair Cadzand and Crooks Peak just a couple of potential threats.
