As well as the quality action out on the course, today will be about celebrating the NHS and thanking those who have helped us to navigate the past 12 months. The cancellation of the 2020 Randox Grand National Festival was a huge sadness for sports fans around the world, and so it is very exciting that this year the racing is back on and looking as good as ever. It will not be the same without the tens of thousands of spectators who ordinarily throng the course, but with coverage from ITV Racing, Racing TV and Aintree’s Raceday Live Hub on our website, together with the live after racing show on our social media channels, we hope all fans will be able to feel a fraction of the excitement from a safe social distance. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle deﬁnition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

FACTS & STATS THE SSS SUPER ALLOYS MANIFESTO NOVICES’ CHASE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Named after Manifesto, a horse who ran in eight Grand National’s between 1895 and 1904, this race was ﬁrst staged in 2009. A Grade 1, this race often features horses who ran previously in the Arkle and the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Like Manifesto, who won two Grand National’s, horses need to be tough at the ﬁnish to win this race, which has now been the opening race at the meeting for six years, and was handed Grade 1 status after just three runnings.

KALASHNIKOV Sent off at 4/1, the Amy Murphy-trained Kalashnikov put a good ﬁeld to the sword in powerful style. Given a superb ride from familiar jockey Jack Quinlan, the seven-yearold tracked the leaders before making a mistake two fences out, but quickly recovered to go three lengths clear approaching the last. Despite being all out on the run-in, he stayed on well to fend off favourite on the day La Bague Au Roi, who ﬁnished a gallant second, with Mengli Khan back in third.

FACTS & STATS THE DOOM BAR ANNIVERSARY 4-Y-O JUVENILE HURDLE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION Only the third Grade 1 in the English calendar for juvenile hurdlers, the Anniversary was handed it’s top level staus in 2005. Prior to this, any Triumph winner trying to complete the Cheltenham-Aintree double would have to carry a penalty, and since then, the Triumph has really been the obvious starting place when assesing this race. FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY BOWL STEEPLE CHASE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION First ran in 1984, the Bowl - or Martell Cup as it was previously known as - is the feature Grade 1 on the opening day of the meeting. This race has £150,000 worth of prize money on offer, making it one of the most lucrative Grade 1 steeplechases ran in the United Kingdom. Switched from Grand National Day to the ﬁrst day of the meeting in 2013, the Aintree Hurdle is usually a clash between two milers and three-milers. This race is unique as it is the only open Grade 1 hurdle over 2m4f at any of the three spring festivals. The intermediate trip gives an opportunity for those classy hurdlers to shine over their optimum trip, with the likes of Jezki and Oscar Whisky recent examples of hurdlers who have excelled in this race.

A TRIBUTE TO ROSE PATERSON 1956-2020 Aintree lost a dear friend in 2020 with the passing of Racecourse Chairman, The Hon Rose Paterson. Rose, who passed away in June last year at the age of 63, was first involved with Aintree as Racecourse Committee Director in 2005 and became Chairman in 2014. She was also appointed to The Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards in 2019. Her passion for racing was lifelong and she described the day she became Aintree’s Chairman as “a dream come true”. Everyone she met will readily recall her kind, caring and compassionate personality and Aintree is proud to dedicate this year’s Foxhunters’ Chase to her memory as the Rose Paterson Randox Foxhunters’ Chase. One of Rose’s most treasured achievements during her time at Aintree was the inauguration of the Grand Women’s Summit, which now takes place on the Friday of the Randox Grand National Festival every year. This year her daughter Evie will launch the Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award, an annual award which will support someone in the community around Aintree each year. There have been many tributes paid to Rose, but there is no doubt that one of the most poignant was by racehorse owner Trevor Hemmings, who is seeking a record fourth Randox Grand National victory in 2021. He said: “Rose Paterson was such a lovely person and it is hard to believe that she is no longer part of Aintree in today’s world. “She will always be part of Aintree as far as I am concerned and many other people will feel the same. She was so nice, so level headed and never missed anybody out - whether they be old or young, rich or poor. She was a super lady and one we will miss very much. I am so sorry for the Paterson family.” Rose was succeeded as Chairman by Nicholas Wrigley, who has paid his own tribute. He said: “Rose’s role was amazing and all encompassing. I think it was remarkable for those that could see it, but many could not see the totality of it. She was excellent with the staff, whether they be full-time, part-time or just there on the big day. She was also excellent with the owners, trainers, and stable staff – she had a wonderful manner and was loved by everybody. “Her enthusiasm and interests went much wider than that however. Horse welfare was very important to her and she was a key part of the team maintaining horse welfare and improving it all the time. “Her work with our charitable partners was tireless. Whether that be Park Palace Ponies, whose ponies she looked after during the first COVID lockdown, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Everton in the Community or local schools - it was all part of her work and she worked tirelessly. “The other thing we all saw was the love that she had for Owen and her children. That was very important to her and she had great pride in their achievements, which makes it all so sad. From the perspective of everyone on the committee, we shall miss Rose and racing at Aintree will never be the same without her.” Dr Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director of sponsor Randox, added: “Rose was central to everything and our key contact point at Aintree. “She was an extraordinary person who always believed in doing good and always wanted to help people. Her love of horses was very much a factor in Aintree’s safety and welfare philosophy, which is superb. To us, she was central to the whole ethos of Aintree. “Rose was dedicated to Aintree and to the people of Liverpool. We will sadly miss her, both in the Randox family and in my own family.” At the 2021 Randox Grand National Festival, Rose will be named as an Aintree Legend – a ceremony will take place on Grand National Day. The Rose Paterson Trust, which will support organisations and individuals working to reduce the annual toll of suicides, is being launched at this year’s meeting.
