THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

We are delighted to welcome you to the opening day of the Randox Grand National Festival, Liverpool’s NHS Day. As well as the quality action out on the course, today will be about celebrating the NHS and thanking those who have helped us to navigate the past 12 months. The cancellation of the 2020 Randox Grand National Festival was a huge sadness for sports fans around the world, and so it is very exciting that this year the racing is back on and looking as good as ever. It will not be the same without the tens of thousands of spectators who ordinarily throng the course, but with coverage from ITV Racing, Racing TV and Aintree’s Raceday Live Hub on our website, together with the live after racing show on our social media channels, we hope all fans will be able to feel a fraction of the excitement from a safe social distance. Our thanks as ever go to the sponsors of this meeting. Firstly, to our event partner Randox, who have supported the Grand National Festival since 2017. We are delighted to confirm our partnership with them for the next five years and look forward to continue working with Dr Peter FitzGerald, his wife Nuailin and the Randox team. Our thanks also go to our official betting partner Betway, SSS Super Alloys, Molson Coors, Close Brothers and Goffs UK. Randox have generously renamed the Foxhunters’ Chase in memory of our late Chairman, Rose Paterson. We thank our sponsors for making this extremely kind gesture in celebrating Rose’s time at Aintree. We are also delighted to be able to welcome a restricted number of owners back on course over the three days. We hope you all enjoy your time with us, and wish you all the best of luck today. Thank you for your patience and support over the past 12 months. We very much look forward to welcoming all of our racegoers back to Aintree to celebrate with us again at the 2022 Randox Grand National Festival. NICHOLAS WRIGLEY

BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

FACTS & STATS THE SSS SUPER ALLOYS MANIFESTO NOVICES’ CHASE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Named after Manifesto, a horse who ran in eight Grand National’s between 1895 and 1904, this race was first staged in 2009. A Grade 1, this race often features horses who ran previously in the Arkle and the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Like Manifesto, who won two Grand National’s, horses need to be tough at the finish to win this race, which has now been the opening race at the meeting for six years, and was handed Grade 1 status after just three runnings.

KALASHNIKOV Sent off at 4/1, the Amy Murphy-trained Kalashnikov put a good field to the sword in powerful style. Given a superb ride from familiar jockey Jack Quinlan, the seven-yearold tracked the leaders before making a mistake two fences out, but quickly recovered to go three lengths clear approaching the last. Despite being all out on the run-in, he stayed on well to fend off favourite on the day La Bague Au Roi, who finished a gallant second, with Mengli Khan back in third.

A mouth-watering opener in which HITMAN is taken to gain a first win at the top level having made a highly-promising start to life over fences. FACTS & STATS THE DOOM BAR ANNIVERSARY 4-Y-O JUVENILE HURDLE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION Only the third Grade 1 in the English calendar for juvenile hurdlers, the Anniversary was handed it’s top level staus in 2005. Prior to this, any Triumph winner trying to complete the Cheltenham-Aintree double would have to carry a penalty, and since then, the Triumph has really been the obvious starting place when assesing this race. High profile winners of this race include subsequent Champion Hurdle winner Binocular, and recently Apple’s Jade and Defi du Seuil have landed the spoils. 2019

FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY AINTREE HURDLE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Switched from Grand National Day to the first day of the meeting in 2013, the Aintree Hurdle is usually a clash between two milers and three-milers. This race is unique as it is the only open Grade 1 hurdle over 2m4f at any of the three spring festivals. The intermediate trip gives an opportunity for those classy hurdlers to shine over their optimum trip, with the likes of Jezki and Oscar Whisky recent examples of hurdlers who have excelled in this race.

SUPASUNDAE After odds-on favourite Buveur D’Air was disappointing on the day, Supasundae took full advantage of a strong field, going off a relative outsider at 15/2. The now 11-year-old got a superb ride on the day from Robbie Power, gaining the lead 3 out and staying on gamely all the way to the line to gain his sixth win over hurdles. His win capped a golden spell for horses in the silks of Ann and Alan Potts.

WE PROMISE THE EARTH WILL SHAKE

A TRIBUTE TO ROSE PATERSON 1956-2020 Aintree lost a dear friend in 2020 with the passing of Racecourse Chairman, The Hon Rose Paterson. Rose, who passed away in June last year at the age of 63, was first involved with Aintree as Racecourse Committee Director in 2005 and became Chairman in 2014. She was also appointed to The Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards in 2019. Her passion for racing was lifelong and she described the day she became Aintree’s Chairman as “a dream come true”. Everyone she met will readily recall her kind, caring and compassionate personality and Aintree is proud to dedicate this year’s Foxhunters’ Chase to her memory as the Rose Paterson Randox Foxhunters’ Chase. One of Rose’s most treasured achievements during her time at Aintree was the inauguration of the Grand Women’s Summit, which now takes place on the Friday of the Randox Grand National Festival every year. This year her daughter Evie will launch the Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award, an annual award which will support someone in the community around Aintree each year. There have been many tributes paid to Rose, but there is no doubt that one of the most poignant was by racehorse owner Trevor Hemmings, who is seeking a record fourth Randox Grand National victory in 2021. He said: “Rose Paterson was such a lovely person and it is hard to believe that she is no longer part of Aintree in today’s world. “She will always be part of Aintree as far as I am concerned and many other people will feel the same. She was so nice, so level headed and never missed anybody out - whether they be old or young, rich or poor. She was a super lady and one we will miss very much. I am so sorry for the Paterson family.” Rose was succeeded as Chairman by Nicholas Wrigley, who has paid his own tribute. He said: “Rose’s role was amazing and all encompassing. I think it was remarkable for those that could see it, but many could not see the totality of it. She was excellent with the staff, whether they be full-time, part-time or just there on the big day. She was also excellent with the owners, trainers, and stable staff – she had a wonderful manner and was loved by everybody. “Her enthusiasm and interests went much wider than that however. Horse welfare was very important to her and she was a key part of the team maintaining horse welfare and improving it all the time. “Her work with our charitable partners was tireless. Whether that be Park Palace Ponies, whose ponies she looked after during the first COVID lockdown, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Everton in the Community or local schools - it was all part of her work and she worked tirelessly. “The other thing we all saw was the love that she had for Owen and her children. That was very important to her and she had great pride in their achievements, which makes it all so sad. From the perspective of everyone on the committee, we shall miss Rose and racing at Aintree will never be the same without her.” Dr Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director of sponsor Randox, added: “Rose was central to everything and our key contact point at Aintree. “She was an extraordinary person who always believed in doing good and always wanted to help people. Her love of horses was very much a factor in Aintree’s safety and welfare philosophy, which is superb. To us, she was central to the whole ethos of Aintree. “Rose was dedicated to Aintree and to the people of Liverpool. We will sadly miss her, both in the Randox family and in my own family.” At the 2021 Randox Grand National Festival, Rose will be named as an Aintree Legend – a ceremony will take place on Grand National Day. The Rose Paterson Trust, which will support organisations and individuals working to reduce the annual toll of suicides, is being launched at this year’s meeting. To support the Trust, please visit www.justgiving.com/rosepatersontrust - any donations would be greatly appreciated. The thoughts of everyone at Aintree are with Rose’s husband Owen and their three children, Felix, Ned, and Evie.

FACTS & STATS THE ROSE PATERSON RANDOX FOXHUNTERS’ OPEN HUNTERS’ CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION

The first of only three races at the meeting on the Grand National course, the Foxhunters offers amateur jockeys the chance of glory over the most famous fences. While the landscape of Hunter Chases is a little different this year, plenty of horses, riders and trainers love a tilt at the Foxhunters’, which is the Grand National equivalent for the Point-to-Point racing sphere.

FACTS & STATS THE CLOSE BROTHERS RED RUM HANDICAP CHASE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION Over the minimum trip, this is a race not for the halfhearted. Named after Red Rum, this race is run at a furious gallop and looks sure to suit those who like coming from off the pace. This race has risen through the Graded ranks since it’s inception as a standard handicap in 2001. First a Listed Handicap, then a Grade 3, this race is one for horses who didn’t fare well in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham. 2019

GRADE 3 HANDICAP

MOON OVER GERMANY

RUN OVER TWO MILES

The Henry De Bromhead-trained Moon Over Germany won this competitive handicap with ease in 2019, sent off at 11/2. Despite racing keenly throughout, Henry De Bromhead’s in-mate drew clear two out out and put the British horses to shame, to come home a readily winner by 10 length, under a welltimed ride from a certain Rachael Blackmore. 5/1 favourite on the day Lady Buttons was booked for second, followed by Jonjo O’Neill’s Champagne At Tara who finished in third.

GETAWAY TRUMP has been called a few names in his time but it’s hard to knock his record over 2m on good ground and he’s taken to build on his comfortable Doncaster win last time. Last month’s Sandown 1-2 Grey Diamond and Dostal Phil are possible threats, while Destrier, who was third in a Grade 1 novice chase at this meeting in 2019, is dangerously well treated if staging a revival.

FACTS & STATS THE GOFFS UK NICKEL COIN MARES’ STANDARD OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (GRADE 2) RACE DESCRIPTION

The last race of the opening day of the festival is a Grade 2 National Hunt flat race (known to many as a bumper) for four, five and sixyear-old fillies and mares who are looking to gain some valuable black type. Also now a GBB race, the GBB scheme provides financial incentives and bonuses for qualified fillies and mares who progress through the racing ranks.

WINNER

RUN OVER TWO MILES, 209 YARDS

THE GLANCING QUEEN The Irish domination was thwarted by the Alan King-trained The Glancing Queen, who gave Wayne Hutchinson a fine day in the sun shortly before his retirement from the saddle a few weeks later. Always in touch, the winner travelled smoothly throughout to see off favourite Minella Melody, trained by Henry De Bromhead and ridden by Patrick Mullins, with Daylight Katie back in third under David Dunsdon.

PLAY SMARTER

Lots of these are open to improvement, but EILEENDOVER has looked a very smart filly in going 3-3 in bumpers and Pam Sly’s star is fancied to take this step up in class in her stride. C&D scorer Elle Est Belle is feared most on the back of her excellent third in the Champion Bumper with Miss Lamb, Mind Sunday and Finest View appealing as the pick of the remainder.
