THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

We are delighted to be able to welcome you to day two of the Randox Grand National Festival. Ladies’ Day is always a very special occasion at Aintree and we are looking forward to another exciting day’s racing. Following the success of 2020, the #AGrandDayIn Virtual Style Awards are back and the competition closes later today. We are inviting everyone to embrace the theme of the day and get dressed up to enjoy a day at the races from the comfort of your own home. To find out more information about how to enter, please head over to the racecourse website. Good luck! Alongside the action on the course, Ladies’ Day sees us host our Grand Women’s Summit which continues to go from strength to strength and this year’s panel is full of sporting stars. Hosted by ITV Racing’s Alice Plunkett, the panel, which includes Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Pippa Funnell and Judy Murray, will discuss the challenges professional sport presents to mental health with this year’s event taking the title: ‘Sport and mental health: A Powerful Relationship’. We are also delighted to welcome Evie Paterson, daughter of our late Chairman, Rose Paterson, to make the opening address at the Summit. This year the event is being held virtually and you will all be able to watch it on Aintree’s website from 12:30pm today. Our thanks as ever go to the sponsors of this meeting. Firstly, to our event partner Randox, who have supported the Grand National Festival since 2017. We are delighted to confirm our partnership with them for the next five years and look forward to continue working with Dr Peter FitzGerald, his wife Nuailin and the Randox team. Our thanks also go to our official betting partner Betway, Pertemps, Marsh, Molson Coors and Pinsent Masons. We’re delighted to be able to welcome a restricted number of owners back on course over the three days. We hope you all enjoy your time with us, and wish you all the best of luck today. Thank you for your patience and support over the past 12 months. We hope you and the rest of the world will enjoy all the magic from home with Racing TV and ITV Racing, as well as on our Raceday Live hub on the website, together with the live after racing show on our social media channels. We very much look forward to welcoming all of our racegoers back to Aintree to celebrate with us again at the 2022 Randox Grand National Festival.

BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.

A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

Aintree Tote Placepot tips 1:45pm - The Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) JACAMAR scored over course and distance here in October and looks poised for a big run here. He took his hurdles form to a new level at Wincanton last time and should take all the beating. It’s a big ask for WILDE ABOUT OSCAR under top-weight, but he could well be the graded horse in a handicap here. Our Placepot Perm:

1) Jacamar

2) Wilde About Oscar

2.20pm - The Betway Top Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) AJERO has improved and improved all season and Kim Bailey’s 6yo could well run into a place here. THIRD TIME LUCKI probably hit the front a little too soon in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and can reverse form with Belfast Banter, who got a peach of a ride off bottom-weight. Our Placepot Perm:

1) Ajero

2) Third Time Lucki

2.50pm - The Betway Mildmay Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 1) CHANTRY HOUSE was fantastic in the Marsh Novices’ Chase and it would be a huge surprise to see him finish outside the places.

Our Placepot Perm:

1) Chantry House

3.25pm - The Marsh Steeple Chase (Registered as the Melling) (Grade 1) DASHEL DRASHER heads here after winning the Ascot Chase and can run into a place under another bold ride. NUTS WELL win over course and distance in the Old Roan reads well and he’s been laid out for this.

Our Placepot Perm:

1) Dashel Drasher

2) Nuts Well

4.05pm - The Randox Health Topham Steeple Chase (Grade 3) Top-weight IBLEO ran a belter at Cheltenham, finishing third in the Grand Annual. The step up in trip will suit and he’s never finished out of the places over fences. SENIOR CITIZEN has a handy 10-6 on his back and we might not have seen the best of him yet. Our Placepot Perm:

1) Ibleo

2) Senior Citizen

4:40pm - The Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) STREETS OF DOYEN stays this trip very well and will benefit from what’s likely to be a strong pace here. SIZABLE SAM was a little disappointing last time but is likely to improve for that experience and could be a bit underrepresented in the pool. Our Placepot Perm:

1) Streets Of Doyen

2) Sizable Sam

THE THOROUGHBRED FOR RECRUITMENT THROUGHOUT THE UK

FACTS & STATS THE PERTEMPS NETWORK HANDICAP HURDLE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

This two and a half mile handicap hurdle is always a competitive contest and is one of the only intermediate trip Grade 3 handicap hurdles where runners are almost guaranteed to get good ground. Many trainers target this due to the favourable conditions, with novices holding a particularly strong record thanks to the lateness it is staged in the season. With a big field, horses with good tactical speed are able to excel over this two and a half mile trip.

THREE MUSKETEERS Three Musketeers settled in well to life at Cullentra and made his first start for the yard a winning one. Returned to hurdles and down in trip on his stable debut, he travelled powerfully under Jack Kennedy to exploit his low hurdles mark of 132, having been rated as high as 155 over fences. Delivered late by Kennedy, the winner plugged on well to see off Tim Vaughan’s Point Of Principle back in second and Canardier in third.

PLAY SMARTER

Several possibilities in this very competitive opener. Nicky Henderson has tasted success in this 3 times since 2013 so the suggestion is MONTE CRISTO, who was still in with a shout of aplace when hampered at the last in the Coral Cup. Edwardstone has some very solid 2m handicap form to his name and is bred to stay this trip so he’s next on the list ahead of Mister Coffey and Solwara One.

FACTS & STATS THE BETWAY TOP NOVICES’ HURDLE (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION The Top became a Grade 1 in 2016 and has been dominated by Nicky Henderson in recent years, with the likes Buveur D’Air, Josses Hill and My Tent Or Yours all those to have won from Seven Barrows. This race acts as a natural progression from the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and the last horse to complete the Supreme-Top double was Browne’s Gazette in 1984. 2019

GRADE 1

WINNER

RUN OVER TWO MILES, 103 YARDS

FELIX DESJY Fifth in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Felix Desjy came to Aintree full of confidence after that promising run and put his exuberant running style to use by making all in this race in 2019. Jack Kennedy was keen to be positive from the saddle and rode his mount into every hurdle, keen to keep momentum. A slight wobble up the run-in was soon corrected, and he stayed on well to see off the fast finishing Aramon in second.

FACTS & STATS THE MARSH STEEPLE CHASE (REGISTERED AS THE MELLING CHASE) (GRADE 1) RACE DESCRIPTION

Another Grade 1 with a rich history, the Marsh Melling Chase was added to the racing calendar in 1991, with Grade 1 status handed for it’s inaugural running. Named after the nearby village of Melling, situated on the famous Melling Road which crosses the racecourse, this is for many the feature race of the meeting. Another event over the intermediate trip of two miles and four furlongs, the likes of Don Cossack, Finian’s Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre feature on the roll of honour.

RUN OVER TWO MILES, THREE FURLONGS & 200 YARDS

MIN

Min was at his imperious best when winning this in 2019, making all the running and putting in an exhibition round of jumping under Ruby Walsh. His victory was the most in command that many have seen for a long while in such a high-profile Grade 1, and he won unchallenged in mighty style. He bounced back from a below-par run at Cheltenham and put his rivals to the sword winning easily by 20 lengths.

A TRIBUTE TO ROSE PATERSON 1956-2020 Aintree lost a dear friend in 2020 with the passing of Racecourse Chairman, The Hon Rose Paterson. Rose, who passed away in June last year at the age of 63, was first involved with Aintree as Racecourse Committee Director in 2005 and became Chairman in 2014. She was also appointed to The Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards in 2019. Her passion for racing was lifelong and she described the day she became Aintree’s Chairman as “a dream come true”. Everyone she met will readily recall her kind, caring and compassionate personality and Aintree is proud to dedicate this year’s Foxhunters’ Chase to her memory as the Rose Paterson Randox Foxhunters’ Chase. One of Rose’s most treasured achievements during her time at Aintree was the inauguration of the Grand Women’s Summit, which now takes place on the Friday of the Randox Grand National Festival every year. This year her daughter Evie will launch the Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award, an annual award which will support someone in the community around Aintree each year. There have been many tributes paid to Rose, but there is no doubt that one of the most poignant was by racehorse owner Trevor Hemmings, who is seeking a record fourth Randox Grand National victory in 2021. He said: “Rose Paterson was such a lovely person and it is hard to believe that she is no longer part of Aintree in today’s world. “She will always be part of Aintree as far as I am concerned and many other people will feel the same. She was so nice, so level headed and never missed anybody out - whether they be old or young, rich or poor. She was a super lady and one we will miss very much. I am so sorry for the Paterson family.” Rose was succeeded as Chairman by Nicholas Wrigley, who has paid his own tribute. He said: “Rose’s role was amazing and all encompassing. I think it was remarkable for those that could see it, but many could not see the totality of it. She was excellent with the staff, whether they be full-time, part-time or just there on the big day. She was also excellent with the owners, trainers, and stable staff – she had a wonderful manner and was loved by everybody. “Her enthusiasm and interests went much wider than that however. Horse welfare was very important to her and she was a key part of the team maintaining horse welfare and improving it all the time. “Her work with our charitable partners was tireless. Whether that be Park Palace Ponies, whose ponies she looked after during the first COVID lockdown, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Everton in the Community or local schools - it was all part of her work and she worked tirelessly. “The other thing we all saw was the love that she had for Owen and her children. That was very important to her and she had great pride in their achievements, which makes it all so sad. From the perspective of everyone on the committee, we shall miss Rose and racing at Aintree will never be the same without her.” Dr Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director of sponsor Randox, added: “Rose was central to everything and our key contact point at Aintree. “She was an extraordinary person who always believed in doing good and always wanted to help people. Her love of horses was very much a factor in Aintree’s safety and welfare philosophy, which is superb. To us, she was central to the whole ethos of Aintree. “Rose was dedicated to Aintree and to the people of Liverpool. We will sadly miss her, both in the Randox family and in my own family.” At the 2021 Randox Grand National Festival, Rose will be named as an Aintree Legend – a ceremony will take place on Grand National Day. The Rose Paterson Trust, which will support organisations and individuals working to reduce the annual toll of suicides, is being launched at this year’s meeting. To support the Trust, please visit www.justgiving.com/rosepatersontrust - any donations would be greatly appreciated. The thoughts of everyone at Aintree are with Rose’s husband Owen and their three children, Felix, Ned, and Evie.

FACTS & STATS THE RANDOX TOPHAM HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION The second of three races run over the famous Grand National fences, the Topham is staged over almost half the distance of the Randox Grand National. Always Waining landed his race for three successive years from 2010 to 2013, with Ultragold winning back to back renewals in 2017 and 2018. This race is always a tough ask, so it’s not a surprise to see that horses with plenty of previous experience over the fences fare the best in this Grade 3 handicap. 2019

Nicky Henderson has won this on 5 occasions and his strong team is headed by CARIBEAN BOY, who caught the eye in the Paddy Power Plate at the Cheltenham Festival. That could prove the key piece of form as Huntsman Son also shaped well in that race. Livelovelaugh took extremely well to these fences in the 2019 Grand National and should make much more of an impact at the business end over this shorter trip.

First ran in 1988, the race rose through the Graded ranks to achieve Grade 1 status in 1995, with Morgan’s Harbour becoming the first winner of the race as a Grade 1. Since then, racing royalty have won this, with Sir Anthony McCoy, Richard Johnson and Paul Carberry all riding winners.

WINNER

RUN OVER THREE MILES, 149 YARDS

CHAMP

Fresh from his second at the Cheltenham Festival behind City Island, Champ was all class when winning this in 2019. Settled into midfield by Mark Walsh, Champ made smooth headway in the closing stages to take up the running two hurdles from the finish and clear away from the smart Emitom in second. The second Grade 1 of his career, Champ was at his enigmatic best and marked himself out as a horse to follow.

PLAY SMARTER

BRAVEMANSGAME couldn’t live with the turn of foot displayed by the top-class winner of the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle last month, but he meets nothing of Bob Olinger’s ilk here, and with this step up in trip promising to suit, he can regain the winning thread. Cape Gentleman and Gallyhill are arguably open to the most progress and head the opposition.

FACTS & STATS THE PINSENT MASONS HANDICAP HURDLE (CLASS 2) (CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ AND AMATEUR RIDERS’ RACE) RACE DESCRIPTION

A two mile handicap hurdle, this race has switched positions in the schedule to the final race on day two of the meeting, whereas previously it rounded out the meeting as the final race on Saturday. A chance for the Amateur and Conditional riders to shine, the likes of Jamie Codd, David Mullins and David Bass have all won this previously, the latter two before turning professional. Always ran at a fast pace, hold up horses fare well in these kinds of races.

CHIEF JUSTICE

The colours of Cheveley Park Stud are best known to flat racing fans, but their rise to power in the National Hunt sphere was continued with the success of Chief Justice in this back in 2019. Held up under top amateur rider Jamie Codd, the winner was delivered to perfection at the last to take up the lead and, despite a slight mistake, was driven out on the run-in to see off the fast finishing Thistimenextyear by a head.

PLAY SMARTER

A case can be made for plenty of these but the most persuasive one is for Olly Murphy’s lightly-raced COPPERLESS who is on an upward curve and had plenty in the tank when making a recent winning handicap debut at Taunton. Fransham has enjoyed a fruitful season and another bold showing is on the cards with conditions to suit, while Leoncavallo and Native Fighter are two others worth considering.
