Welcome to Randox Grand National Day. We are delighted to stage the people’s race once more and hope to bring a smile to the nation as the world will again watch 40 runners and riders take part in the world’s greatest steeplechase. Rose, who passed away in June 2020 at the age of 63, was first involved with Aintree as Racecourse Committee Director in 2005 and became Chairman in 2014 which she described as a “dream come true”. The Rose Paterson Trust, which will support organisations and individuals working to reduce the annual toll of suicides, is being launched today. Rose was an integral part of this racecourse, and an incredibly special person to work with. The thoughts of everyone at Aintree are with Rose’s family, who will be with us today. We’re delighted to be able to welcome a restricted number of owners back on course over the three days. We hope you all enjoy your time with us, and wish you all the best of luck today. We are delighted to have Lydia as part of our line-up and wish her a wonderful day. A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.

RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle deﬁnition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

Aintree Tote Placepot tips 1:45pm - The EFT Systems Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) WHIRLING DERVISH is very interesting here. He obviously has a touch of class, having previously been rated 100 on the Flat and ﬁnished 7th in a big handicap on Future Champions Day at Newmarket. He’s unexposed over these staying trips. 4.15pm - The Betway Handicap Steeple Chase (Listed) HAPPYGOLUCKY ran a great race at Cheltenham only to be beaten by Vintage Clouds. He’ll be popular here, but for good reason. TOP NOTCH wound back the clock to run a blinder in the Plate. If running up to that form, he’s good value for a place off the same mark. Our Placepot Perm:

4:40pm - The Randox Grand National Steeple Chase (Grade 3) A horse that stands out as being made for the Grand National is Tom Lacey’s Kimberlite Candy. He stays well, he’s a sound jumper, and perhaps crucially, he’s got a good record over the Grand National fences. Farclas could be one to watch. The seven-year-old grey has been admirably consistent over fences this term, running mighty races in big ﬁeld handicaps. ANIBALE FLY, who’s placed in this before, completes the shortlist. FACTS & STATS THE EFT SYSTEMS HANDICAP HURDLE (GRADE 3) RACE DESCRIPTION

Handed Grade 3 status in 2010, the race was switched to the last day of the meeting in 2016. Run over a trip just longer than three miles, novices and lightly-raced hurdlers have a good record in this race. Despite the long trip, proven stamina isn’t always a neccessity when ﬁnding the winner in this race and, in fact, those stepping up in trip for the ﬁrst time often go well. This is one for slick jumpers who travel well and may have a bit in hand at the weights.

Aux Ptits Soins carried more weight than almost all his rivals but it wasn’t enough to stop a brillaint preformance. The grey was easy to pick out coming round the home bend and once he jumped the third last Harry Skelton kicked for home. Stablemate Tommy Rapper chased him all the way up the long run in but it wasn’t enough, and even though Aux Ptits Soins blundered his way through the last hurdle he was still on top at the ﬁnish.

Everyone loves a grey, they always seem to be so flamboyant, brave and, naturally, are more noticeable. Only three horses bearing the hallmark have won the Aintree Grand National in its 172 runnings – The Lamb who won in 1868 and 1871, the 2012 winner Neptune Collognes and, 60 years ago, Nicolaus Silver in 1961. Nicolaus Silver was bred in Tipperary in Ireland. He was not highly regarded in his native land, even when his subsequent Grand National-winning rider Bobby Beasley saw him race at Naas in 1960 he reportedly was not impressed. Nicolaus Silver’s trainer Dan Kirwan died suddenly that year and the horse had to be sold. Nicolaus Silver He was offered in November at the Dublin-based Ballsbridge Bloodstock Sale – the company is now known as Tattersalls Ireland. Before his death Kirwan had qualified Nicolaus Silver for the 1961 Grand National; it meant that horse was of keen interest to owners wishing to become involved in the big-race action. Two parties went head-to-head for the eight-year-old – journalist and racehorse trainer Ivor Herbert and his owner the film producer Frank Lauder versus the current champion trainer Fred Rimell with his owner Charles Vaughan. His reason for involvement was personal – he wanted to beat the horse owned by his father, Major D Vaughan. Rimell and Vaughan ended up the successful buyers with a bid of £2,600. After purchase Rimell was told by an Irish trainer: “You have given too much money for a bad horse!” Initially the horse did not set the gallops alight at Rimell’s yard in Kinnersley, Worcestershire, but Rimell was a magically talented trainer and knew the horse would prefer the faster spring ground. In March, the horse was sent up the road to run at the Cheltenham Festival and duly won the Kim Muir Handicap Chase. He is still one of only a handful of horses to win at The Festival and then go on to Grand National success in the same year. As the spring moved forward and the ground quickened again, the yard’s confidence began to grow. Apparently Rimell sent a telegram to Vaughan, then in Spain, saying that his horse had a “very, very good chance “ of winning the Grand National.

A five-time champion trainer Rimell became known as “Mr Grand National” after producing four winners of the race, and he is still the joint winning-most trainer. He subsequently

reported that, of all his winners, he had been most confident beforehand about Nicolaus Silver’s chances. Despite that confidence, the horse did not get to the race without some intrigue and gossip. Rumours of a plot to dope Nicolaus Silver reached Rimell and apparently an unusual “fragrant French lady” visited the stables. If she was there for misdeeds she was frustrated in her attempts – the pre-warned Rimell had switched stables for his Grand National entry and Nicolaus Silver’s usual box housed another grey named High Spot. It was never proven that High Spot was “got at” by mistake, but he never raced again. The pre-race problems for Nicolaus Silver were not over – when he was being shod with his racing plates the farrier pricked his foot giving the trainer and his staff an anxious night poulticing to draw any abscess. But the race with its 35-runners, including two international runners from Russia (who were both allotted a welter burden of 12st7lb!) went without mishap for Nicolaus Silver. Beasley settled the horse mid-field, jumped up toward the front as they headed out on the second circuit, and then sat him third or fourth behind the previous year’s winner Merryman. The grey jumped round the big track with ease and went clear on the run-in to win by a cosy five lengths with his ears pricked. Nicolaus Silver’s victory ensured a good pay out for his owner – reportedly Vaughan had backed the horse down from 40-1 to 28-1! Big purchases continue Such is the enduring romance of the Grand National, owners have continued to buy horses specifically for the race. Perhaps the most famous winning horse is Party Politics, who was bought in a private purchase by Patricia Thompson of Cheveley Park Stud just three days before he won in 1992. This year’s entry Balko Des Flos was bought by the RacehorseClub.com in March. His purchase reveals how bloodstock sales have changed – and especially in the last Party Politics year. Due to the pandemic, many recent bloodstock auctions have been staged online only as virtual events, with no horses or people at the sale ground, horses viewed by video and photos on the sale companies’ websites. Balko Des Flos was sold by the British-based Goffs UK sale company at its Online March Sale. Bought by bloodstock agent Peter Molony, who bid via the sales company’s timed online auction hub, the ten-year-old cost £110,000, some 44 times more than Nicolaus Silver’s 1960 auction price! The Henry de Bromhead-trained gelding was purchased on behalf of the RacehorseClub.com, which is setting up a new way for people to become involved in racehorse ownership through affordable “microshares”. Horseracing, racehorse purchasing and racehorse ownership has come a long way in the last 60 years.

A TRIBUTE TO ROSE PATERSON 1956-2020 Aintree lost a dear friend in 2020 with the passing of Racecourse Chairman, The Hon Rose Paterson. Rose, who passed away in June last year at the age of 63, was first involved with Aintree as Racecourse Committee Director in 2005 and became Chairman in 2014. She was also appointed to The Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards in 2019. Her passion for racing was lifelong and she described the day she became Aintree’s Chairman as “a dream come true”. Everyone she met will readily recall her kind, caring and compassionate personality and Aintree is proud to dedicate this year’s Foxhunters’ Chase to her memory as the Rose Paterson Randox Foxhunters’ Chase. One of Rose’s most treasured achievements during her time at Aintree was the inauguration of the Grand Women’s Summit, which now takes place on the Friday of the Randox Grand National Festival every year. This year her daughter Evie will launch the Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award, an annual award which will support someone in the community around Aintree each year. There have been many tributes paid to Rose, but there is no doubt that one of the most poignant was by racehorse owner Trevor Hemmings, who is seeking a record fourth Randox Grand National victory in 2021. He said: “Rose Paterson was such a lovely person and it is hard to believe that she is no longer part of Aintree in today’s world. “She will always be part of Aintree as far as I am concerned and many other people will feel the same. She was so nice, so level headed and never missed anybody out - whether they be old or young, rich or poor. She was a super lady and one we will miss very much. I am so sorry for the Paterson family.” Rose was succeeded as Chairman by Nicholas Wrigley, who has paid his own tribute. He said: “Rose’s role was amazing and all encompassing. I think it was remarkable for those that could see it, but many could not see the totality of it. She was excellent with the staff, whether they be full-time, part-time or just there on the big day. She was also excellent with the owners, trainers, and stable staff – she had a wonderful manner and was loved by everybody. “Her enthusiasm and interests went much wider than that however. Horse welfare was very important to her and she was a key part of the team maintaining horse welfare and improving it all the time. “Her work with our charitable partners was tireless. Whether that be Park Palace Ponies, whose ponies she looked after during the first COVID lockdown, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Everton in the Community or local schools - it was all part of her work and she worked tirelessly. “The other thing we all saw was the love that she had for Owen and her children. That was very important to her and she had great pride in their achievements, which makes it all so sad. From the perspective of everyone on the committee, we shall miss Rose and racing at Aintree will never be the same without her.” Dr Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director of sponsor Randox, added: “Rose was central to everything and our key contact point at Aintree. “She was an extraordinary person who always believed in doing good and always wanted to help people. Her love of horses was very much a factor in Aintree’s safety and welfare philosophy, which is superb. To us, she was central to the whole ethos of Aintree. “Rose was dedicated to Aintree and to the people of Liverpool. RANDOX GRAND NATIONAL P by Paul Ferguson 11 years on from winning the race with Don’t Push It, trainer Jonjo O’Neill is set to saddle the favourite for this year’s Randox Grand National, Cloth Cap. Third in the Scottish Grand National as a novice two years ago, the nine-year-old has shown marked improvement during this campaign, and following victory in both the Ladbrokes Trophy and Kelso’s Premier Chase, he will arrive at Aintree at the peak of his powers. In part, his improved form could simply be down to maturity and experience, but cheek-pieces were applied for the first time at Newbury in late-November, whilst he has also adopted new front-running tactics of late. Having won the Ladbrokes Trophy off a mark of 136, he is now rated 162, but with his Kelso victory coming after the publication of the weights, he races here off 148, so is effectively a stone ahead of the assessor. As a consequence, purely from a handicapping perspective, he would appear to hold very strong claims, although his price (at the time of writing) rather reflects that. At his very best on good ground, he is likely to find it more difficult to dominate this field from the front, so it will be interesting to see if he again attempts to make all. Cloth Cap will bid to provide leading owner Trevor Hemmings with a fourth win in the race since 2005, following on from Hedgehunter, Ballabriggs and Many Clouds. Ruby Walsh partnered Hedgehunter 16 years ago, having first won the race in 2000 aboard Papillon for his father, Ted. Walsh senior runs Any Second Now this year, and the nine-year-old arrives at Aintree on the back of winning a Grade 2 over the minimum trip. An unusual preparation you might think, but Papillon had been running largely over shorter distances, and Seabass won over two-miles prior to finishing third for Walsh in the 2012 Grand National. Incidentally, Jonjo O’Neill went very close to winning his second National that year, with Sunnyhillboy beaten a nose into second. The winner of the Kim Muir at Cheltenham in 2019 (3m2f), Any Second Now’s stamina isn’t assured, with his other four career wins were recorded over the minimum trip. However, his season has been geared around this race and he looks to be one of several with strong claims for leading owner JP McManus, successful in 2010 with the aforementioned Don’t Push It. McManus’s famous green and gold hooped silks are also to be carried by both Minella Times and Kimberlite Candy. The former skipped last week’s Irish equivalent and is another with a slight question mark hanging over him in terms of the trip. Yet to win beyond 2m6f, he has most recently run two solid races in very competitive Leopardstown handicaps, finishing second at both the Christmas meeting and the Dublin Racing Festival. Only eight and still lightly-raced as a chaser, he looks capable of landing a valuable handicap at some stage, and he is set to be partnered by none other

PREVIEW than Rachael Blackmore, who dominated the column inches following her outstanding performance(s) in the saddle at last month’s Cheltenham Festival. Kimberlite Candy is the only horse towards the head of the betting with experience of the famous fences. Runner-up in each of the past two renewals of the Becher Chase, Tom Lacey’s nine-year-old shaped better than the bare form this season (beaten 24 lengths), only tiring on the run to two out. He was conceding plenty of weight to both the winner and those who finished immediately behind him, and although he hasn’t been seen since, he remains a leading contender, with the added bonus of knowing that he appears to relish jumping the big fences. Winner of the Irish Grand National as a six-year-old in 2019, Burrows Saint has long given the impression that he could be the ideal type for Aintree, and despite not getting his head in front in three starts this season, Willie Mullins’ son of Saints des Saints has to be taken very seriously. Two runs over hurdles in ground far softer than ideal was followed by an encouraging second in the Bobbyjo Chase (a race Hedgehunter won before providing Mullins with his only Grand National to date), where he travelled notably well throughout. Rather like Cloth Cap, Burrows Saint enjoys a sounder surface, so news of the recent spell of pleasant weather in Liverpool will have gone down well in County Carlow. He will need to settle in the early part of the race, but the eight-year-old looks to have plenty of class about him, and it isn’t difficult to envisage him travelling powerfully for a very long way. On a line through him, stable-mate Acapella Bourgeois – who beat Burrows Saint in the Bobbyjo when conceding 6lbs – has to be considered at longer odds. He has won the past two renewals of the Bobbyjo and he also ran well when runner-up to dual Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo on New Year’s Day at Tramore. He wasn’t beaten far when third behind Burrows Saint in the 2019 Irish National, so would certainly be one of the more interesting outsiders. The same can be said of Paul Nolan’s Discorama, although he has been steadily supported in the build-up to the meeting. Runner-up in the National Hunt Chase two years ago (when it was still run over an extended 3m7½f), he went on to split Delta Work and A Plus Tard in a Grade 1 at Punchestown the following month, and his best effort since was his third behind the ill-fated The Conditional at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. That was strong form, and although he disappointed when last sighted in mid-November, he has a good record when fresh and shapes like a marathon trip will suit. Finally, 2019 runner-up Magic Of Light will bid to go one place better from a 5lbs higher mark, whilst top-weight Bristol de Mai is the class angle, having already been successful in no fewer than five Grade 1s. Three of those came in Haydock’s Betfair Chase, so the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained grey clearly likes the North West air, although he would probably appreciate a drop or two of rain. Personally, I nailed my colours to the mast of Burrows Saint early on in the season, but whatever the outcome, we look set for another memorable renewal of the world’s most famous race. And, once the fun of the big race is all over, we still have the Grade 2 Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race to look forward to, where we could well see some jumping stars of the future. The Henry De Bromhead-trained Ornua has been a front running tearaway all his career and this was no different. Davy Russell got a ﬁne tune out of Ornua out in front and his jumping was exemplary, as one by one his rivals began to make mistakes. Despite Destrier’s best efforts, he couldn’t bridge the gap as Us And Them stayed on well into second.

Moved to the Grand National meeting in 2004, the Ryanair Stayers Hurdle was formely held at Ascot. It has now since been upgraded to a Grade 1 from a Grade 2 and was won in four consecutive seasons by Big Buck’s. THE RANDOX GRAND NATIONAL – A RACE LIKE NO OTHER…. This year will be the 173rd running of the world’s greatest steeplechase – the Randox Grand National. Unusually, we have had to wait two years since the 172nd renewal, which saw Tiger Roll win for the second year in succession, as the COVD-19 pandemic saw the cancellation of the race in 2020. This was the first time that there had been no Grand National since 1945, when World War II was entering its final stages. The Randox Grand National, however, is not just any other horse race and has overcome countless challenges to come back stronger than ever. As well as surviving two World Wars, the 1970s and early 1980s saw the future of Aintree Racecourse very much in doubt with several renewals rumoured to be “the last Grand National”. Ever since the future of Aintree Racecourse was secured by The Jockey Club in 1984, the Randox Grand National Festival has developed into three days of fabulous Jump racing unlike any other fixture in the world. Aintree Racecourse is extremely thankful for the unfailing support offered by Randox, which has renewed its sponsorship of the event for at least another five years. On the subject of overcoming challenges, 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of perhaps the greatest Grand National fairytale of them of all. In 1981 Bob Champion, having defeated cancer, partnered Aldaniti to record a memorable victory. This year is also the 20th anniversary of Red Marauder’s 2001 victory, memorable in that he led home four finishers in challenging conditions under a masterful ride from Richard Guest. Every Grand National seems to have an uncanny ability to produce a fascinating back story and is often accurately referred to as the “People’s Race”. For many racing fans watching the race with family at home has been the beginning of a love affair with the sport, while for others it remains an annual ritual and perhaps their one ‘flutter’ of the year. It was no surprise that a survey of Britons undertaken by equine welfare charity The Brooke in 2006 saw the greatest Grand National hero of all, three-time winner Red Rum, named as the best-known horse of any kind. This recognition came despite his passing 11 years earlier at the age of 30, in 1995, and 29 years after his third victory in 1977. He was a comfortable 12 per cent clear of the second best-known horse – Black Beauty! With every Grand National brings unrivalled possibilities and expectancy. Could it be a record fourth victory for the race’s great supporter, owner Trevor Hemmings, or could there be a groundbreaking first success for a female jockey? Aintree takes its name from the Anglo Saxon “One Tree” and what was once a small village now forms part of the city of Liverpool – a great metropolis like no other and no venue more appropriate for such a unique contest. William Lynn, proprietor of Liverpool’s Waterloo Hotel, was the man who founded Aintree Racecourse and first thought of staging the Grand National. Sadly he endured ill health up to his death in 1870 but he can be truly proud of his creation – a unique and iconic British sporting institution.

There were those who questioned his satmina, but horse and jockey put those doubts to bed and he powered away jumping the last. Daryl Jacob gave the winner a brilliant ride that left Mister Malarky, Oldgrangewood and Gold Opera battling out the minor places, but there were no questions over the winner.

Rathvinden and Magic Of Light were prominent throughout the race and coming to the last three fences had pulled a little way clear with Tiger Roll stalking them in behind. Magic Of Light almost unshipped her rider at the last and Tiger Roll pounced to take up the running approaching the Elbow. The best up-and-coming National Hunt horses come here to try and take Aintree glory and it promises to be another competitive race. A great target for bumper horses to round off their season in, the trip requires a horse with speed, so will naturally favour those bred to have a turn of foot as opposed to those who will want a bit further in the long run.

MCFABULOUS Paul Nicholls’ inmate was sent off favourite in a strong race last year. There were a number of Irish raiders, Santa Rossa and Dewcup the most notable, but it was an all English ﬁnish between McFabulous and Thebannerkingrebel. Both came to the front travelling strongly and Mcfabulous was the ﬁrst to commit, starting a head to head battle and as they approached the winning post. McFabulous was delivered on the stand side rail and just clinched victory by a length under Harry Cobden.

The British Horseracing Authority may exercise its powers under Rules to refuse to allow a horse duly entered to run when they have reason to be concerned about the horse’s suitability for the race. Any horse whose entry is confirmed will not be permitted to run if it subsequently runs in any other race, including Point-to-Point races. All runners must be presented to the BHA Veterinary Officers for a pre-race veterinary inspection and must pass the inspection.
