Royal Ascot 2020 – Taking place safely behind closed doors Following government approval, British racing resumed along with several other professional sports on 1st June, under strict guidelines and protocols established by the British Racing Authority (BHA) with Public Health England. Those attending will be required to travel directly to and from the fixtures, with the vast majority able to do this via car and without using public transport. Attendance at Royal Ascot is extremely limited only to those who are absolutely required to operate the meeting. This includes essential BHA and racecourse staff, medical personnel, vets, one trainer per yard, one racing groom per horse, jockeys, horsebox drivers and a limited number of media. All attendees at Royal Ascot will have to pass a mandatory three-stage health screening. This includes: 1 - An online education module to ensure attendees have a baseline understanding of COVID-19. 2 - An online health questionnaire – completed at least seven days prior to planned attendance. 3 - Screening/temperature checks on arrival at the racecourse. Everybody will also be required to have adequate photo ID to prove identity. If anybody fails the screening, they will not be allowed entry to the racecourse. As a non-contact sport taking place outdoors, the risk of virus transmissions are recognised to be lower. The vast majority of the race meeting can be run whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines and dedicated social distancing officers will be on site to ensure these guidelines are maintained at all times. There are a small number of situations where social distancing will not be able to be maintained, albeit very briefly, such as legging up or loading horses into the stalls. PPE and/or face coverings will be worn within the racecourse by personnel who are unable to maintain social distancing. This will include jockeys, stalls handlers, stable staff, trainers and veterinary teams. Field sizes have been limited to 24 at Royal Ascot to help ensure social distancing throughout the site. For more information on how racing at Royal Ascot and other racecourses is taking place safely, please visit the British Horseracing Authority website: https://www.britishhorseracing.com/regulation/covid-19-coronavirus-industry-guidance-and-updates/

Royal Ascot - Race Histories 1.15pm
The Buckingham Palace Handicap
One of a total of six races added to Royal Ascot for 2020, the seven-furlong Buckingham Palace Handicap, lost from the card when The Commonwealth Cup was introduced in 2015, will open the Royal Meeting rather than its traditional curtain raiser, The Queen Anne Stakes. First established in 2002 when a fifth day was added to the meeting to mark the Golden Jubilee, the only trainer to send out multiple winners was Kevin Ryan with Uhoomagoo in 2006 and Lightning Cloud in 2013.
1.50pm
The Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
First run as ‘The Trial Stakes’ in 1840 and renamed in 1930 to commemorate Ascot’s founding monarch, The Queen Anne Stakes consistently attracts the best milers from Europe and beyond. Since its elevation to Group 1 status in 2003, no winner has turned in a more sensational performance than the incomparable Frankel, who won by an astonishing 11 lengths in 2012. Tepin was the race’s first US-trained winner in 2016, while Ribchester set a new course record time the following year. In 2018, Accidental Agent landed a memorable first Royal Ascot and Group 1 - victory for trainer Eve Johnson Houghton, only to refuse to start the following year, when the race was won by Lord Glitters, runner-up to Accidental Agent 12 months previously.
2.25pm
The Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2)
The Ribblesdale Stakes is named after the 4th Baron Ribblesdale, Master of the Buckhounds between 1892 and 1895. It was first run in 1919, but without the present conditions of three-year-old fillies until 1950. Notable winners include Cantelo (1959), Windmill Girl (1964), Park Top (1967) and Phantom Gold, who won for Her Majesty The Queen in 1995. There were emotional scenes in 2013 when Riposte gave Lady Cecil, widow of the great Sir Henry who had passed away just nine days previously, her first Royal Ascot training success. Last year’s winner, the John Gosden-trained Star Catcher, was the subsequent winner of three Group 1s later that season, including the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes here in October. A key Oaks trial in 2020 owing to the Epsom fillies’ Classic having been pushed back a month to July 4th, The Ribblesdale Stakes is being run earlier than its usual slot of Thursday in order to provide Oaks contenders with the maximum amount of time before Epsom.
3.00pm
The King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2)
This race’s roll of honour includes many three-year-olds who went on to make an impact at Group 1 level, notably the 2012 Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso (2010) and subsequent King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes and Coral-Eclipse winner Nathaniel (2011). St Leger winners Aurelius (1961), Light Cavalry (1980) and Mutafaweq (1999) all captured the Royal Ascot contest before landing the final British Classic of the season. Formerly known, and still sometimes colloquially referred to as the Ascot Derby, the race was inaugurated in 1834 and regularly features horses that have competed in the Epsom Classic. Conversely, it is this year a key trial for the Derby, owing to the middle-distance Classic having been delayed a month by the suspension of British racing, and has therefore been moved from the Friday to the opening day of the Royal Meeting in order to maximise the time between the two.
3.35pm
The King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
The King’s Stand Stakes has been won by such legendary sprinters as Abernant (1949), Be Friendly (1967), Dayjur (1990) and Lochsong (1994). The five-furlong contest has been boosted by international participation since 2003 when Australian star Choisir landed the prize on the opening day of Royal Ascot before returning on the Saturday to capture what is now The Diamond Jubilee Stakes, a feat which Godolphin’s sensational Blue Point so memorably also achieved last year. The King’s Stand Stakes has since been won by three more Australian-trained horses - Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007) and Scenic Blast (2009) - with further international success coming from Hong Kong’s Little Bridge (2012) and America’s Lady Aurelia (2017). In 2008, the sprint was promoted to a Group 1.
4.10pm
The Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2)
Renamed in 2013 in honour of The Queen’s grandson, this race joined Royal Ascot as The Windsor Forest Stakes in 2004, when it was introduced as part of an industry-wide initiative to encourage connections of the leading Classic generation fillies from the previous year to keep their stars in training. Winners of the Straight Mile contest for four-year-old and above fillies and mares have included the James Fanshawe-trained Soviet Song, who won as a six-year-old in 2006.
4.40pm
The Ascot Stakes (Handicap)
Run over two-and-a-half miles, this is one of Royal Ascot’s best-loved staying handicaps and was first run in 1839. Like The Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes, it provides a thorough test of stamina and is one of just four races at the Royal Meeting in which the field passes the winning post twice. Horses who have won both this and the final contest of the week - the even-longer Queen Alexandra Stakes - in the same year include Trelawny (1962 and 1963) and more recently Baddam (2006) and Simenon (2012). In 2010, the David Pipe-trained Junior joined a select number of horses who have won at both Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham Festival, while Irish champion Jumps trainer Willie Mullins saddled his fourth winner of the race when Lagostovegas landed the prize in 2018.

Why A Successful Royal Ascot Matters To QIPCO Our private, family run investment firm is now in its seventh year as an Official Partner of Royal Ascot; its expanding association with one of the world’s premier sporting and social events has been an immense source of pride to my brothers and I.
in Britain which acts as a stunning finale to the British Flat racing season at Ascot. Whilst losing World Champion three-year-old and Cartier Horse of the Year, Roaring Lion, to colic in New Zealand was a cruel blow to our young operation, we appreciate how fortunate we are to have his one and only crop safely on the ground. We will watch them grow and race with great anticipation, as we also watch the first European crop of our young Australian super stallion, Zoustar. Our operation is all about the future and I am assured by David Redvers that we have the most exciting group of foals this year and that Royal Ascot 2022 and 2023 will be our best yet! For it is Royal Ascot that is the beating heart of horseracing and here that we dream of breeding and leading in a winner.
QIPCO Holding, based in Doha, was established in 1999 and is considered one of the leading investment companies in Qatar. QIPCO has a diverse range of interests, including real estate, construction, oil and gas, trading and services, finance and health. In more recent years QIPCO has made a significant investment in horseracing, not only as sponsors but also as owners and breeders through our global racing and bloodstock company, Qatar Racing, a subsidiary of QIPCO.
It is in QIPCO’s interests that British racing is healthy and prosperous. Our ambition is to see the horses that race for Qatar Racing go on to become valuable assets, whether they be stallions or mares. The value of the horses we race and the stallions we stand is enhanced if they are competitive in what are internationally acknowledged as the best races in the world, and it is to all our advantage that through our support, the quality of racing at Royal Ascot retains that heady status.
My brothers and I share a passion for horseracing and British racing in particular. In our minds, no other country can match the quality and heritage of racing as is found in Britain. This is why we choose to base our racing and breeding operations here and, through QIPCO, support the sport as an official partner of Royal Ascot. This year, we also proudly celebrate our tenth anniversary as title sponsors of British Champions Series which commenced at Newmarket and staged the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, which was won by our very own Kameko. The series culminates with QIPCO British Champions Day; the richest day’s racing

CATEGORIES EXPLAINED... QIPCO British Champions Series showcases 35 of the UK’s finest Flat races, and last year included three of the world’s top five contests. The Series races are contested across five different categories – sprint; middle distance; long distance; fillies & mares and kicks off with the mile division and the first Classic of the season, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
SPRINT For horseracing’s speed merchants, the Sprint category comprises two races over the minimum distance of 5 furlongs and five races over 6 furlongs, including the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
MILE The Mile category kicks off with the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and is followed up by the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes. The category culminates in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day. With prize money of £1.1 million, it is Europe’s richest mile race.
MIDDLE DISTANCE The Middle Distance division consists of a number of hugely valuable and iconic races run between 10 and 12 furlongs. Highlights from the seven-race series include the world-famous Investec Derby run at Epsom and Britain’s richest ten-furlong race, the £1.3m QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day.
LONG DISTANCE In the QIPCO British Champions Series Long Distance category come the stamina-sapping races for horses that can stay the trip - the “stayers”. The category features seven races in total across the calendar including the 2 1/4 mile Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup on QIPCO British Champions Day.
FILLIES & MARES The very best fillies and mares battle it out to become queens of this division throughout the year, with seven Group 1 races run between 8 furlongs and 12 furlongs. This kicks off with the QIPCO 1000 Guineas in May and culminates in the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes in October.

The Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) - continued Race Summary: Plenty will want to side with proven Group 1 performer Circus Maximus, who landed the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last year and followed up in another Group 1, the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp. However, there may be better value in some less exposed four-year-olds and TURJOMAAN is taken to reverse Goodwood form from last July with Duke Of Hazzard. The selection looked green and inexperienced that day on only his fourth start. That was his first attempt at a mile, he has lots of scope to progress and will relish fast ground and this more conventional track.

The John Gosden-trained Frankly Darling went into every notebook when winning impressively at Newcastle on the season’s opening day but faces stiffer opposition here, headed by TREFOIL, who looked as though she would benefit hugely from the step up to today’s 1m4f when third in the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket on her return. Another smart Gosden-trained filly, Miss Yoda, won in fine style on her return and may claim second, while it would be a surprise of one of the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair didn’t improve on what they’ve done before, with Passion perhaps the one who will appreciate the step up in trip most.

A History Of Ascot Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses. It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality. The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other. It all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses. On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’. That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal ‘Royal’ Ascot meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768. In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born. 1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters. In 1939, the first racing fixture staged separately from the Royal meeting took place at Ascot. 1951 saw the launch of The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is staged every July and is one of the most prestigious middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the star-studded championship finale to the flat season. The Queen’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees have all been celebrated at Royal Ascot. In 2006, Her Majesty opened a new Grandstand, heralding a new era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world. From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Yeats to Brigadier Gerard, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been some story so far, and we can’t wait to find what the next chapters hold.

The Impact Of Coronavirus As a result of the unprecedented impact of the global coronavirus pandemic across the world in 2020, we are unable to welcome racegoers to join us for this year’s Royal Ascot. Following ongoing discussions with the UK government, racing will take place behind closed doors - with the safety of the public, staff and participating connections taking priority over everything else. We look forward to welcoming our racegoers to Royal Ascot 2021 but are pleased to be able to provide racing fans with the opportunity to watch the five-day meeting on television. Royal Ascot 2020 will go ahead across the five days originally planned, from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June inclusive. All of the historic events remain on a revised timetable, with the addition of an extra six races resulting in a total of 36 contests across the five days: seven on the first four days and eight on the final day. With racing only resuming in Great Britain on 1st June, the decision has been taken to make some changes from the traditional schedule. The St James’s Palace Stakes and The Coronation Stakes have been moved to the final day to maximise the amount of time between those races and The 2000 and 1000 Guineas, which took place on 6th and 7th June. Four of the six two-year-old races will take place on the Friday and the Saturday, providing this year’s juveniles with as much time as possible before contesting key races at Royal Ascot. All 36 races will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Racing and 30 will be shown live on ITV1. As well as being able to watch the action live, you can join us in celebrating Royal Ascot 2020 via our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels and the official Ascot app.

The form guides and star ratings are compiled by the Racing Post. Horse Welfare At every race meeting at Ascot there are four specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses racing on these days. During each race, vets follow the horses by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is now standard practice for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse. This race will be restricted to 24 runners plus three reserves. The three reserves will be nominated as R25, R26 and R27. The procedure for the allocation and operation of the reserves protocol will be as detailed in the notice headed ‘Reserves’ which appears in the important notices following the Standard Conditions on the Racing Bulletin area of the BHA Racing Administration Internet site www2.racingadmin.co.uk. Trainers are reminded of the provisions of paragraph 41 of the Race Entry Code which require that they must notify the Racing Calendar Office immediately when the decision has been made not to run. This will maximise the list of runners and determine whether the weights will need to be raised. The British Horseracing Authority has modified the Declaration of Jockey section of the Race Entries Code and the Division of Races section of the Race Administration Code of the Rules of Racing for the purposes of this race. 31 entries at £175. - Closed June 10th, 2020 Second Race 1.50 - THE QUEEN ANNE STAKES (CLASS 1) (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (see page 18) Distributed in accordance with the Stakes and Prize Money Code; £148000 to the winning horse The second to receive £55975, the third £27975 and the fourth £13975; for four yrs old and upwards; ONE MILE (1,600 metres) Royal Hunt Cup Course (8f ); Enter by noon, June 10th and pay £3125 stake, Declare by 10.00 a.m. June 13th.
