CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of our November Racing Weekend featuring the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle over two miles and three and a half furlongs This race has been won for the last two years by If The Cap Fits and has numerous star names on its roll of honour including Hardy Eustace, Annie Power, Faugheen and Rock On Ruby, all Champion Hurdle winners. Our most grateful thanks go to Coral for their sponsorship of five races today and indeed five yesterday. 2020 marks the 15th year of the Coral Hurdle. Who can forget last year’s renewal of the Grade 2 Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase, where Cyrname defeated Altior in one of the most hotly-anticipated jumps races ever staged at Ascot. It was wonderful to see Cyrname bounce back to that kind of form in the recent Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby and no doubt this year’s renewal will again provide clues to Grade 1 races in the coming months. Our thanks go to Chanelle Pharma, first time sponsors at Ascot and Veolia, sponsors of the Veolia Mares’ Handicap Hurdle. Last year, this meeting was run as our inaugural Discover Racehorse Ownership Weekend in conjunction with the Racehorse Owners’ Association and Racehorse Syndicates Association. We welcomed representatives of some 25 syndicates and worked closely with the National Trainers’ Federation and Great British Racing to promote the initiative. Sadly, the second renewal has been delayed due to the ongoing pandemic. Rest assured, however, that we plan to build on the initiative and relaunch Discover Racehorse Ownership Weekend in 2021, when encouraging interest and investment in our great sport will never have been more acutely in focus. Yesterday, we staged the Ascot Racecourse Supports Safer Gambling Week Novices’ Chase. This week, the industry is working with its betting partners to promote the message ‘Let’s talk about safer gambling.’ More information can be found on page 26 of this racecard. 1st Race 12.20pm The Coral “Fail To Finish” Free Bet Novices’ Hurdle Race

Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April. This particular contest is a novices’ hurdle for horses aged four and upwards, run over two miles and about ﬁve and a half furlongs. PAGES 14-16

2nd Race 12.55pm The Play The Coral “Racing Super Series” Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase (GBB Race) This handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 135 is run over three miles. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAGES 20-22

3rd Race 1.30pm The Veolia Mares’ Handicap Hurdle Race This hurdle race for ﬁllies and mares aged four and above, which have been rated from 0 to 130, is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125. PAGES 28-29

4th Race 2.05pm The Chanelle Pharma 1965 Steeple Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Grade 2 races are high-class contests and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top notch horses lining up. Initially, the weights in this two-mile-ﬁvefurlong steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards are allocated on the basis of age and sex,

before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here. These range from 4lb for a Listed or Grade 3 victory to 6lb for a Grade 1 or Grade 2 success. PAGES 34-35

5th Race 2.40pm The Coral Hurdle Race (Registered as The Ascot Hurdle) (Grade 2)

Like the previous contest, this is another Grade 2 event although this is a hurdle race to be run over two miles and about three and a half furlongs. The penalty structure remains the same, but there would be no allowances for any four-year-olds taking part. PAGES 38-40

6th Race 3.17pm The Coral Hurst Park Handicap Steeple Chase (GBB Race)

This is a handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards, run over two miles and about one furlong. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a speciﬁc ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 44-46

7th Race 3.50pm The Coral Supporting Prostate Cancer UK Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race)

As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race - or ‘bumper’, as they are more commonly referred to - is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time, only debutants or horses that have run in this type of race (or an Irish or French equivalent) are qualiﬁed to run. If they have previously run on the Flat, over hurdles or in steeple chases (except for pointto-points), they are barred from entry. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four, ﬁve and six, and will be run over two miles.

Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were conﬁrmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are preﬁxed by the letter h. 23. A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The ﬁrst permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost ﬁfty years.

It was Queen Anne in 1711 who ﬁrst saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The ﬁrst race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that ﬁrst Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with The Queen Anne Stakes.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the ﬁrst four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of The Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magniﬁcent achievement, and one that Stradivarius could emulate next year.

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents The Gold Cup and The Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.

In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won The Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with The Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 11 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. MASTER MINDED RECORDING HIS FIRST SUCCESS IN THE 1965 CHASE IN 2010

The Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase is the first of two Grade 2 contests on today’s card. Formally run as a limited handicap over 2m4f, the race has been run in several guises over the years. Most notably, it was renamed the 1965 Chase in 2006 in recognition of the year National Hunt racing was first staged at Ascot, becoming a conditions race three years later with its distance extended from 2m3f to today’s 2m5f in 2015. Generously sponsored this year by Chanelle Pharma, the 1965 Chase invariably proves to be a high-class affair and has a hugely impressive roll of honour. Like the Betfair Chase, today’s feature race up at Haydock, it frequently acts as an early-season target for a number of top staying chasers being primed for the King George VI Chase, its intermediate trip often proving the ideal platform before a step up to three miles. Indeed, Wayward Lad, who won the Boxing Day showpiece on three occasions, was victorious in the inaugural running of the Ascot contest in 1981 and although no other winners of the 1965 Chase have gone on to land the King George, several have been placed at Kempton the following month including Captain Chris (2012), Al Ferof (2013 and 2014), Vautour (2015) and Cyrname (2019). The 1998 victor Red Marauder was unique in going on to courageously win a memorable Grand National in 2001 but the race has thrown up numerous Cheltenham Festival winners. The 1992 winner Deep Sensation followed up in that season’s Grade 1 Queen Mother Champion Chase, while the 2020 Champion Chaser Politologue had landed the spoils at Ascot in 2018. Albertas Run took the 2008 renewal before consecutive wins in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase in 2010 and 2011, with Willie Mullins’ supremely talented 2015 winner Vautour running away with the same Cheltenham prize - his third Festival victory - the following March. 24 THE 1965 CHASE

Master Minded was already a dual Champion Chaser when winning a brace of 1965 Chases in 2010 and 2011, the brilliant two-miler embracing a step up in trip towards the end of his celebrated career. Other notable winners of the 1965 Chase include Sound Man (1995), who would win consecutive runnings of the Grade 1 Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown as well as what is now the Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase in 1996; the subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Strong Promise (1996), who later that season defeated the great One Man in the Ascot February highlight; and Captain Chris (2012), a former Arkle winner who went on to win the Ascot Chase in 2014. Also to have enjoyed additional success at Ascot was the 2001 winner Wahiba Sands, who in the process became the first horse to defeat the three-time Gold Cup hero Best Mate over fences and who won at Ascot on three other occasions. Nordance Prince (1999) won what would later become the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase two months later, as did the aforementioned Master Minded, who landed the 2011 Clarence House following the first of his two 1965 Chase victories. In one of the most hotly-anticipated clashes of recent times, the 2019 renewal saw Cyrname - Britain’s highest-rated chaser - end the 19-race unbeaten run of Nicky Henderson’s magnificent dual Champion Chaser Altior with a textbook front-running performance and an exemplary round of jumping. It was Cyrname’s third win at Ascot, the horse having taken apart a proven Grade 1 field with a devastating 17-length victory in the Betfair Ascot Chase earlier that year. Cyrname’s handler, Paul Nicholls, is by far the most successful trainer in the history of the 1965 Chase, having saddled a further six winners; Cerium (2006), dual victors Master Minded (2010 and 2011) and Al Ferof (2013 and 2014), and Politologue (2018).

HARDY EUSTACE (RIGHT) BATTLES TO WIN HIS SECOND CORAL ASCOT HURDLE IN 2007

The Grade 2 Coral Hurdle (registered as The Ascot Hurdle) is one of Ascot’s most notable Jumps prizes. First run in 1978, the race is frequently used as an early-season target for some of the most highly-regarded hurdlers in training. It has been won by no fewer than seven Champion Hurdlers over the years. Two of these won Cheltenham’s blue riband hurdle twice, including Hardy Eustace; a tremendously tough and popular performer who, prior to landing the Ascot Grade 2 in 2006 and 2007, had won the Champion Hurdle in both 2004 and 2005. The great mare Dawn Run (1983) remains the only horse to have completed the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup double. The son of her trainer, the late Paddy Mullins, would later enjoy success in the Coral Hurdle himself, Annie Power and the evergreen Faugheen - still in training approaching the age of thirteen - making it back-to-back wins for Willie Mullins in 2013 and 2014 before following up at Cheltenham in 2016 and 2015 respectively. Being run over an intermediate trip, the extended 2m3f contest can also lead to elite success over further. The high-class and versatile Yanworth (2016), for instance, went on to not only land Kempton’s two-mile Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle a month later but also the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle over 3m1/2f at Aintree’s Grand National Festival the following spring. Other distinguished names to have won the Coral Hurdle include the dual King George VI Chase winner Silviniaco Conti (2010) and the popular grey Monet’s Garden (2004), who won the first of two consecutive renewals of the race run at Windsor during the redevelopment of Ascot Racecourse and who would later win two editions of the Grade 1 Betfair Ascot Chase. 32 T H E CO R A L A SCOT H U R D L E

Barry Geraghty is the race’s most successful rider, the recently-retired jockey having ridden four winners including the two-time Aintree Hurdle victor Oscar Whisky (2012), Rock On Ruby (2015) and the aforementioned Yanworth (2016). Its winning-most trainer is Martin Pipe. The legendary Somerset handler saddled five Coral Hurdle winners during his extraordinary career, including dual scorer Sabin Du Loir (1987 and 1988), one of the most consistent and durable performers of the late eighties and early nineties, and another Ascot specialist, Wahiba Sands (1999), who two years later got up by half a length to beat the triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate in what is now the Grade 2 1965 Chase on this card. After having sent out Paul Nicholls’ former Champion Hurdler Rock On Ruby to win the race in 2015, Harry Fry has trained If The Cap Fits to win the last two renewals of the Coral Hurdle, the horse defending his crown last November off the back of a big staying prize in the Grade 1 Liverpool Hurdle that April. In addition to If The Cap Fits, Sabin Du Loir and Hardy Eustace, there have been four other dual winners of the Coral Hurdle; Triumph Hurdle winner Connaught Ranger (1979 and 1980), Champion Hurdlers Gaye Brief (1984 and 1985) and Morley Street (1990 and 1991), and François Doumen’s two-time Stayers’ Hurdle winner Baracouda (2001 and 2002), who won a record four renewals of the Long Walk Hurdle at his beloved Ascot between 2000 and 2003 and at Windsor in 2004.
