CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the final day’s racing at Ascot in 2020. Sadly, we are unable to stage this fixture as a pre-Christmas celebration and we will miss our traditional carol singing post racing. Our thanks go to Betfair, sponsors of the £100,000 Betfair Exchange Trophy, a hugely competitive two-mile handicap hurdle which is always a competitive betting heat. Buzz has been the long-time ante post favourite for the most successful trainer in the race, Nicky Henderson, after an impressive victory over course and distance in November, while last year’s winner Not So Sleepy bids to become the first ever dual winner of the race. Top quality will be on display in the £80,000 Grade 1 Porsche Long Walk Hurdle as the first and second from the recent Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury reoppose in the shape of Thyme Hill and Paisley Park. They are two of the very best horses in the staying hurdle division and, as the only Grade 1 staying-hurdle race in Britain before the Festival, this is a key early season event. The roll of honour includes Big Buck’s, Baracouda, My Way De Solzen and Reve De Sivola, while the remarkable 12-year-old Thistlecrack landed the race in 2015 and is back again today to try and join the list of multiple winners. Porsche is the Official Car of Ascot, providing vehicles for officials, vets, doctors and VIP guests on racedays, and we are most grateful for their support today and through the year. Also, thanks must go to Foundation Developments, sponsors of our opening race today, who have been with us for 15 years. This afternoon, we recognise the excellent work of the Injured Jockeys Fund through the Injured Jockeys Fund Graduation Chase. They are represented here today selling Christmas cards and gifts from their stall situated next to the Parade Ring. We are proud to work with them on several initiatives and there are more details on page 19. Our first ITV race today is the “For The Love Of Racing” Handicap Steeple Chase. The “For The Love Of” campaign was launched across sport last week, and aims to reinforce the positive part sport plays in our lives, never more so in these challenging times. Racing is delighted to be involved in such an important campaign. Our penultimate race is named in support of Hollie Doyle, who was one of the real stories of not just the racing year but the year in sport. Following her debut Royal Ascot winner with a first Group 1 and a double on QIPCO British Champions Day, amongst many other achievements, Hollie is a finalist in tomorrow night’s BBC Sports Personality Of The Year. I am sure you will join me in wishing her all the very best of luck. Like so many industries and sports, 2020 has been challenging for the sport of racing. We have missed our racegoers hugely and look forward to welcoming many more people back to Ascot in 2021. On behalf of everyone at Ascot, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

5th Race 3.00pm The Good Luck Hollie In SPOTY Silver Cup Handicap Chase (Listed Race) (GBB Race)
This handicap hurdle for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120 is run over two miles and about seven and a half furlongs. Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences, allowing them to compete against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race under the respective code prior to the official start of the season, which is towards the end of April.
A graduation steeple chase is simply a race for horses that have yet to win more than twice over fences. This particular contest for horses aged four and upwards is to be run over two miles and about five furlongs. Initially the weights are set according to age and sex, before penalties, ranging from 4lb to 7lb depending on the class of race won, are then awarded to previous winners. PAGES 26-28
3rd Race 1.50pm The “For The Love of Racing” Handicap Steeple Chase
This handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150 is run over two miles and about three furlongs. In a handicap, the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating, which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher-rated horses to carry more weight than a lower-rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale, whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

CONTENTS
The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards to be run over three miles and about half a furlong. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premier League in football quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb, although fillies and mares do receive a 7lb allowance.
This is a three mile Listed handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band, but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher-rated horses must still concede weight to their lower-rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAGES 46-49
6th Race 3.35pm The Betfair Exchange Trophy (A Handicap Hurdle) Grade 3) (GBB Race) This Grade 3 handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards is run over two miles. To qualify for a handicap rating, horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the Handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms, a horse rated 150 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 145.

21. Weight (stones/pounds) 22. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 23. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
H O W T O R E A D T H E R A C I N G PA G E S 5
A SHORT HISTORY ASCOT’S BEGINNINGS Few sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution; with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter, and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost fifty years.
It was Queen Anne in 1711 who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.
In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.
THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters, rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bears little resemblance to modern day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first Plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with The Queen Anne Stakes.

A S H O RT H I STO RY
ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of The Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius could emulate next year.
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the Sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today, as Ascot Authority (Holdings) Limited, Ascot has a formal board chaired by Sir Francis Brooke Bt., who also serves as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot. As an owner and breeder of racehorses, Her Majesty The Queen takes a keen interest in the races, and has had great success with her own horses over the years. The jockeys riding Her Majesty’s horses can be identified by The Queen’s racing colours: purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves, and black velvet cap with gold fringe – the same as those of King Edward VII and George IV as Prince Regent. During Royal Ascot, The Queen traditionally presents The Gold Cup and The Diamond Jubilee Stakes. New versions of these trophies are made each year and presented to the winners to keep. Ascot Racecourse closed for a £200 million redevelopment in 2004, and was reopened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth on 20th June 2006. HIGHLIGHTS AT ASCOT SINCE 2006 There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006 and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013.
In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat racing season. The great Frankel won The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won The Champion Stakes a year later. Sir Henry Cecil’s pride and joy won five of his remarkable unbeaten run of 14 races at Ascot in all. 2012 also saw Ascot at the heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with The Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed The Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare, Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it is the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled 11 winners at the Royal Meeting. It is not just international horses which Ascot is known for, of course. Jockeys also come from all over the world to ride here – perhaps most notably at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, a unique fixture in the global racing calendar which each year sees many of world’s top jockeys compete for points to lift racing’s ultimate team prize, with four teams battling it out across a thrilling six-race contest. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and - most recently - the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. INJURED JOCKEYS FUND ASCOT AMBASSADORS PROGRAMME
Today we would like to recognise the work of the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) whose mission is to provide appropriate support in a prompt and sympathetic manner to those jockeys past and present who are injured, unable to ride or generally in need. Since 1964, the Fund has helped over 1,000 jockeys and their families and has paid out more than £18m in charitable assistance. Typically, our IJF Ambassador’s Programme would be in operation on a raceday, providing Fine Dining guests with a fun, educational talk and tour from an IJF jockey. The combination of a £1 donation per cover from the racecourse coupled with on-the-day donations from guests has been hugely successful and whilst the remaining 2020 programme was postponed, a total of £2,500 was still raised during our January and February racedays. This total will be added to the £80,000 now raised via the programme since 2017 and we are very much looking forward to its recommencement in 2021. In honour of the charity, our 1.15pm race has been named “The Injured Jockeys Fund Graduation Steeple Chase”. THE LONG WALK HURDLE
BIG BUCK’S ON HIS WAY TO WINNING A THIRD LONG WALK HURDLE IN 2011
As one of Britain’s most prestigious long-distance hurdle races, the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle has been won by many of the greatest staying hurdlers of all time. Generously sponsored this year by Porsche, the race - which was first run in 1965, initially as a handicap, obtaining Grade 1 status in 1990 - takes its name from the famous tree-lined avenue in Windsor Great Park and is run over a trip of three miles and about half a furlong. Its most prolific winner was undoubtedly the mighty Baracouda. François Doumen’s dual champion stayer won a record four renewals between 2000 and 2004, the French raider’s final victory in the race - and indeed, the 18th and final victory of his remarkable career - coming at Windsor rather than his beloved Ascot when the Long Walk was rerouted there during the royal racecourse’s redevelopment. Big Buck’s, who was saddled by Paul Nicholls to win not only three renewals of this prize (2009-2011) but also an unprecedented four editions of the Grade 1 Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, is another particularly distinguished name on the race’s roll of honour. His first victory in the Long Walk came at Newbury, when heavy snow forced Ascot’s popular Christmas raceday to be abandoned in 2009. For all their dominance in the Ascot highlight, those two iconic staying hurdlers are by no means the only Long Walk winners to have also landed the Cheltenham championship contest. Indeed, today’s feature race has long been a recognised stage for high-class stayers looking to further their claims for Cheltenham Festival glory three months later and, since the Long Walk Hurdle was first run as a conditions race in 1971, a total of six of its winners have subsequently gone on to win that season’s Stayers’ Hurdle – Derring Rose (1980/81), Baracouda (2001/02), My Way de Solzen (2005/06), Big Buck’s (2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12), Thistlecrack (2015/16) and Paisley Park (2018/19). Furthermore, Highland Abbe won the Long Walk in 1972 before claiming the Cheltenham stayers’ prize in 1974, while both 3 0 T H E L O N G WA L K H U R D L E
Princeful (1998) and Anzum (1999) were the reigning champion staying hurdler when following up at Ascot that December. The 1983 winner Crimson Embers would, like Baracouda and Big Buck’s, become a multiple winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle himself, regaining his 1982 championship crown at Cheltenham in 1986. Another notable winner was the Fred Winter-trained Lanzarote, who had won the previous year’s Champion Hurdle before carrying a record 12st 5lb to a comfortable eight-length victory under John Francome when stepping up in trip in the 1975 Long Walk Hurdle. (Francome and Winter, one of the most successful and longstanding partnerships in National Hunt history, would five years later strike again with the aforementioned Derring Rose.) John Cherry, a former Cesarewitch winner on the Flat, was the first horse to win the race more than once (1977 and 1979) and remained uniquely so until Baracouda embarked upon his dominance of the staying hurdle division at the start of the next century. In the two decades since, both Big Buck’s and Reve De Sivola have triumphed on three occasions apiece to enhance the race’s reputation as being something of a specialist’s event. The Long Walk Hurdle’s esteemed list of winners also includes a Grand National hero, Royal Athlete having landed the spoils in 1989 before going on to win the world’s most famous steeplechase for trainer Jenny Pitman as a twelve-year-old in 1995. However, one of the most memorable characters to have won the Long Walk was the Martin Pipe-trained Deano’s Beeno, who had filled the runners-up spot on no fewer than three consecutive occasions before finally prevailing in 2002. The immensely likeable yet often recalcitrant gelding, sent off a largely unconsidered 14-1 chance, repelled a formidable challenge laid down by Baracouda at the final flight to win by a length under a galvanising ride by Tony McCoy – a thrilling performance which raised the roof at an Ascot enshrouded by thick fog. Ascot’s Christmas showpiece continues to attract the very best staying hurdlers in training, this afternoon’s edition being no exception. Returning to the Berkshire track after having missed the race on account of testing conditions last year is the 2018 victor and subsequent Stayers’ Hurdle champion Paisley Park. Owner Andrew Gemmell’s pride and joy was last seen finishing second in the Grade 2 Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury when conceding 3lb to the winner Thyme Hill. The pair reoppose today, with Paisley Park bidding to become the race’s fifth multiple winner. Also amongst a high-class field is Main Fact, seeking a remarkable tenth consecutive win; the highly-regarded marethe highly-regarded mare Roksana, herself a former Cheltenham Festival winner who landed the Grade 2 West Yorkshire Hurdle last time out; last year’s Long Walk winner The Worlds End; and the enduringly popular twelve-year-old Thistlecrack, another former winner of both this race and the Cheltenham stayers’ championship (2015/16) as well as the King George VI Chase (2016), who makes his seasonal debut after more than a year’s absence enforced by injury. We hope you enjoy what is set to be an enthralling renewal of Ascot’s first Grade 1 of the season; an early Christmas cracker if you will. T H E L O N G WA L K H U R D L E 3 1

HHH Two easy wins (2m3f, soft/heavy) switched to fences last year before pulled-up at the Cheltenham Festival; had wind surgery before reappearing with a win here (2m5f, soft) four weeks ago, in battling style which suggested he would stay further; 6lb rise Official BHA Rating 150 demands more but he’s just a 6yo, very lightly raced and progressive; also 2-2 here.

HHHH Well suited by 3m here where he’s registered seven of his top nine RPRs, including wins in this race in 2016 and 2019 (heavy); another was his reappearance win in October following a second wind operation; no shock if he bounces straight back from his Newbury Ladbrokes Trophy run, when good ground was probably against him, but this 12yo may well need a career best. THE ASCOT ENQUIRY Choc Thornton Robert ‘Choc’ Thornton was always a well-regarded member of the weighing room, the multiple Grade 1-winning jockey notching up 1,129 winners including 16 Cheltenham Festival victories during a highly successful career in the saddle. His longstanding partnership with leading dual-licence trainer Alan King saw the pair enjoy many visits to Ascot’s winners’ enclosure. The record books state that the 2005 winner of Ascot’s annual Christmas highlight, the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle, was Choc’s regular mount and crowd favourite My Way De Solzen. However, in a year that saw all of Ascot’s fixtures re-routed owing to the redevelopment of the course, the race was actually rearranged on two occasions; firstly to Windsor before waterlogging at that course led to it eventually being run at Chepstow. Here we catch up with Choc as the former jockey shares his most memorable Ascot moments, his favourite Ascot ride and, given the chance, who he would like to be riding in this afternoon’s feature race, the Grade 1 Porsche Long Walk Hurdle. Your favourite Ascot memory from your time as a jockey? Invictus winning the Grade 2 Sodexo Prestige Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase - he beat Bobs Worth (the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner) well and it was one of my better rides. Which was your favourite horse to ride at Ascot and why? Voy Por Ustedes, he won the Grade 1 round there in February (the 2009 Betfair Ascot Chase) and was a steering job. Any horse over Ascot’s fences as they are a joy to ride over, well-presented and it’s a track where you have to use your head and ride a race. Tell us a little known fact about yourself ? I like chocolate Which National Hunt horse currently in training would you like to ride in this year’s Long Walk Hurdle and why? Main Fact. He looks like an improving horse who may not be fully exposed. Steps up in class but deserves it and has been backed in recent days. The best piece of advice you were ever given as a jockey? “Ride for as long as you can as when you give up you have to work.” A. Webb What do you miss most about your time in the saddle? Big days’ racing, festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree. You jump the last hurdle in the Long Walk riding My Way De Solzen upsides Baracouda, under Thierry Doumen, and Big Buck’s, ridden by Ruby Walsh. Who wins? In my heart I do of course; in my head Big Buck’s 1st, Baracouda 2nd and My Way a good 3rd. You are throwing a fantasy dinner party, which four racing guests would you invite? Jimmy Derham, Alan King, my present boss Paul Dunkley and Gordon Clarkson. Can I have five? If so, Richard Phillips. Hurdles or chase fences? Fences All I want for Christmas is… The end of this pandemic. 5 4 T H E A SCOT E N Q U I RY
